Lighted Boat Parade Saturday, December 7, 2024 Sponsored by the Santa Cruz Yacht Club and including a canned food drive benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank, the Lighted Boat Parade features 50 beautifully-decorated power and sailboats parading through the Santa Cruz Harbor. Charter boats available. This is a family event with hot drinks and snacks available at various locations through the south harbor. Scyc stays busy during covid-19, hosts laser norcal championships | sailing.

One week after hosting the Santa Cruz 27 National Championship, Santa Cruz Yacht Club is poised for another busy weekend on the water. The club is hosting the Laser NorCal Championship — one of the longest running regattas in the U.S. — as well as Day 1 of the two-day District 24 Championships on Saturday.

The regatta will feature three competing classes, which are based on the longest to shortest masts, respectively: Standard, radial and 4.7.

“This is a big deal,” Christina Shaw, principal race officer, said of the event. “It’s a regional event and is a coming together of clubs, standing by our sister clubs to make races happen. It’s never been so challenging.”

The District 24 Championships were originally slated to be hosted by Tahoe Yacht Club, but they didn’t have housing available to host the event. SCYC picked up Day 1 of the regatta and Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club will host Day 2 on Sunday.

In addition to the coronavirus pandemic, yacht clubs have been affected by numerous fires burning throughout NorCal. At last weekend’s SC27 National Championship, skipper Rachel Cherry said her victorious team was forced to use GPS the first two days of the three-day event due to visibility issues on the water.

Ali Fuat Yuvali, a UC Santa Cruz senior majoring in earth science and the defending standard laser class winner a year ago, said GPS isn’t an option aboard lasers, a single-person dinghy. The boats are too small.

“I may have to use a compass reading of the mark,” said the 21-year-old Turkish sailor, who has been sailing since he was 7. He also serves as an instructor at SCYC and took time off to compete this weekend.

As of Friday afternoon, 14 sailors entered in the standard laser regatta, including Fuat Yuvali and Dante Massaro of SCYC, and 11 in the radial class, including Aptos native Laird Henkel and SCYC members Michael Yang-Murray and Spencer Koontz.

Fuat Yuvali said feels like he has a leg up on the competition in the standard class.

“I’m going to use all the little bits of info I gained practicing here to my advantage,” he said. “I’d love for the trophy to stay with Santa Cruz Yacht Club, but at the end of the day, it’s all about escaping the crazy of 2020.”

Shaw said she has seen both Fuat Yuvali and defending radial champion Toshinari Takayanagi of San Jose on the water and is impressed with each former champion.

“They’re so graceful,” she said. “They’re both ballerinas in the boat.”

The Laser NorCal Championship was initially supposed to run last month.

At that time, the Coast Guard shot down Alameda Yacht Club from hosting the Laser Masters Pacific Coast Championships, so SCYC took over that regatta and pushed back its NorCal event until this weekend.

Racing will be around temporary inflatable buoys or fixed buoys within a 3-mile radius of Walton Lighthouse.

Shaw said goody bags have been put together for the sailors. They include hand cleanser, gloves, a mask and snacks.

Unlike a year ago, this year’s regatta will be one day instead of two. Officials are hoping three races will be held.

“There’s no room for mistakes,” Fuat Yuvali said of the shortened event.
