Yacht Sank in Sicily Due to ‘Endless Chain of Errors,' Ship Maker's Owner Speculates: ‘Everything Was Predictable’

"A series of activities should have been done to avoid finding oneself in that situation," argues Giovanni Costantino, who owns the firm that built the vessel in 2008

  • Giovanni Costantino — who is the CEO of The Italian Sea Group, the company that now owns Perini Navi, which built the  Bayesian  in 2008 — blames an "endless chain of errors" for the luxury yacht’s sinking on Monday, Aug. 19
  • "Everything was predictable. I have the weather charts in front of me here," Constantino told Italian newspaper  Corriere della Sera  of the storm the boat was caught in
  • "An unsinkable ship but from the crew an endless chain of errors," the CEO claimed to the outlet

The sinking of the luxury Bayesian  yacht off the coast of Sicily this week  resulted from an "endless chain of errors" by the crew, the ship maker's CEO is speculating.

"This episode sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," Giovanni Costantino — who leads The Italian Sea Group, the company that now owns Perini Navi, which built the  Bayesian  in 2008 — said,  according to CNN .

While speaking to  Italian newspaper  Corriere della Sera , Costantino said he believes those on board should not have been in their cabins, as he claims they were, when the Bayesian sank in the early hours of Monday, Aug. 19.

Many details of why the yacht went into the water so quickly remain unclear and it's not yet known what the passengers and crew were doing before tragedy struck.

The 183-foot British vessel sank around 5 a.m. local time on Monday after a "violent storm" while near Porticello, the Italian coast guard said in a statement that was previously obtained by PEOPLE.

"Everything that has been done reveals a very long sum of errors. The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor. And then why didn't the crew know about the incoming disturbance?" Costantino said in his interview, translated from Italian.

"The passengers reported an absurd thing, namely that the storm came unexpected, suddenly. It's not true. Everything was predictable. I have the weather charts in front of me here. Nothing came suddenly ... Ask yourself, why was no fisherman from Porticello out that night? A fisherman reads the weather conditions and a ship doesn't? The disturbance was fully readable in all the weather charts. One could not not know," he argued.

"An unsinkable ship but from the crew an endless chain of errors," the CEO asserted.

The coast guard has said 22 people were aboard the  Bayesian  when it sank — 12 passengers and 10 crew — and that 15 of those were subsequently rescued.

The body of the yacht's chef, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered nearby.

Costantino's comments came as it was reported that five bodies had been found in the search for the missing six people as of Wednesday, Aug. 21, a source close to the rescue operations confirmed to PEOPLE. Authorities have said that their work is ongoing.

An Italian government official, Massimo Mariani, reportedly named one of the dead as British tech tycoon Mike Lynch . The other bodies have not yet been publicly identified by authorities.

Lynch was celebrating with family and friends on the yacht following his acquittal in a fraud trial in June, PEOPLE previously reported.

Costantino offered his view of how the tragedy could have been avoided: "To begin with, in a weather alert situation it was inappropriate to have, as I read, a party. Not that evening. The hull and deck needed to be secured by closing all doors and hatches, after putting the guests at the ship's meeting point as per emergency procedure. Then start the engines and pull up the anchor or release it automatically, put the bow to the wind and lower the keel.

"The next morning they would have departed with zero damage."

When discussing whether the crew were at fault, Costantino reiterated to the Italian outlet that he believes "errors were made."

"A series of activities should have been done to avoid finding oneself in that situation," he said. "I as the ship's captain would have moved, but even if for some reason I had to stay there, I would have managed those weather conditions which then, let's face it, weren't so crazy."

Costantino contended that there would have been "a zero risk if the correct maneuvers had been made and if situations that compromised the ship's stability had not occurred," adding to the newspaper that reports that the boat went down in seconds is "nonsense." He believes the yacht would have "went down" after water "started to enter" within "six minutes."

The remaining missing  Bayesian  passengers are Lynch's daughter Hannah as well as Chairman of Morgan Stanley International  Jonathan Bloomer, his wife, Judy , and New York City-based lawyer  Christopher Morvillo and his wife, Neda , sources have said.

Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, was among those rescued, PEOPLE previously reported.

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.

Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.

The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".

News of the sinking left CEO of The Italian Sea Group Giovanni Costantino in ‘sadness on the one hand and disbelief on the other’.

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

It is understood Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are continuing to hold interviews with the survivors.

On Tuesday they questioned the captain for more than two hours to help reconstruct what happened and provide useful technical details.

Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have begun a preliminary assessment of events.

It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the incident, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Bayesian superyacht party was a celebration of Mike Lynch’s U.S. lawsuit victory against HP when waterspout storm struck

Mike Lynch, former chief executive officer of Autonomy Corp., arrives at federal court in San Francisco, California, US, on Monday, March 18, 2024. Lynch is charged with 14 counts of wire fraud, one count of securities fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Photographer: Loren Elliott/Bloomberg via Getty Images

Mike Lynch, the British tech tycoon  missing after his luxury yacht  sank off the coast of Sicily, had only recently fended off a US criminal fraud case over the sale of his software company to Hewlett Packard Co.

Lynch, 59, and his wife were aboard the yacht, named Bayesian after a British mathematician, with a small group of his financial and legal advisers when the violent storm hit. They were celebrating Lynch’s tumultuous acquittal just over two months earlier, when a San Francisco jury found him not guilty of charges that he duped HP into overpaying for his software firm, Autonomy Corp.

Hailed at times as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” Lynch has been seeking to restore his reputation as one of Europe’s most successful entrepreneurs. For years, he’d argued that he had been scapegoated over the acquisition. HP paid $11 billion for Autonomy in 2011, only to write down $8.8 billion of the purchase price a year later.

But even after his acquittal on criminal charges, Lynch was  still fighting  the Silicon Valley giant in a civil case in London, where a British judge held him responsible for creating the illusion of a company much larger and more successful than it really was.

Autonomy’s success — its software could extract useful information from unstructured sources including phone calls, emails and video — made Lynch one of the best-known British technology executives. He was named Entrepreneur of the Year by the Confederation of British Industry in 1999. In 2000, Time magazine named him one of the 25 most influential technology leaders in Europe.

Advised Prime Ministers

He was awarded an Order of the British Empire for services to enterprise in 2006. The same year, he was appointed as non-executive director to the board of the British Broadcasting Corp., the world’s biggest public broadcaster. He advised two British prime ministers, David Cameron and Theresa May.

Lynch made at least $500 million from the HP deal. He then set up venture capital firm Invoke Capital, founding a series of tech companies run by former employees. The most successful was Darktrace Plc, a cybersecurity business that uses AI to detect suspicious activity in a company’s IT network. Forbes magazine  estimated  his net worth to be $1 billion in 2015, the sole year he was named to its list of global billionaires.

HP, along with US prosecutors, alleged that Lynch and Autonomy’s former finance chief used accounting tricks to inflate the company’s revenue ahead of the 2011 sale.

The San Francisco trial placed huge pressures on the tech founder, who was forced to wear an ankle monitor and confined to 24-hour supervision by private security guards he had to pay for. On the stand, Lynch claimed ignorance of some of the wrongdoing attributed to him, saying he delegated key decisions to underlings.

Autonomy “wasn’t perfect,” Lynch testified at the trial. “The reality of life is that it’s nuanced and it’s messy and sometimes you do your best to get through it. And companies are just like that.” When the verdict came, following two days of deliberations, Lynch hugged his lawyer and wiped his eyes.

HP’s acquisition of the company was initially seen as a validation of UK technology and the Cambridge “Silicon Fen” tech cluster where Autonomy was based. But in 2012, HP  publicly accused  Autonomy and its executives of accounting failures. The lawsuit followed. Lynch chose to fight the civil trial with HP in London before facing a US jury in the hope that a ruling on home soil would help his case.

In 20 days of testimony in the UK civil case, he served up a litany of anecdotes aiming to illustrate that HP was riven with executive turmoil and infighting as the company replaced its chief executive officer and pivoted on strategy shortly after the disastrous Autonomy deal.

He largely succeeded. Documents showed HP executives turning on each other — with HP CEO Meg Whitman, the onetime candidate for governor of California and current US ambassador to Kenya, saying she’d be prepared to throw her predecessor Leo Apotheker “under the bus in a tit for tat.” Taking over just as HP closed the Autonomy deal, Whitman sought to focus the firm back on its core PC unit to better manage the sprawling business.

But after one of the longest and most expensive trials in British history, Judge Robert Hildyard ruled in 2022 that Lynch and Autonomy had fraudulently boosted the value of the company. “One of the tragedies of the case is clear: an innovative and ground-breaking product, its architect and the company will probably always be associated with fraud,” the judge said in the ruling.

Damages Pending

The judge was still to decide the damages Lynch would have to pay. HP was seeking $4 billion from him and his finance chief, but the judge had cautioned that it was likely to get substantially less than that.

Those looming penalties from the civil suit did not dent Lynch’s ambitions once he was released from house arrest in the US.

“I am looking forward to returning to the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” Lynch said in a statement after the California jury cleared him of criminal wrongdoing.

Sicily Yacht Company CEO Shares "Endless" Errors That May Have Led to Fatal Sinking Tragedy

After the sinking of a yacht off the coast of sicily that left six people—including tech tycoon mike lynch—dead, ceo giovanni costantino is shedding light on the errors that could have been avoided..

The CEO behind the sunken superyacht believes the tragedy in Sicily could have been prevented.

Just days after  superyacht the Bayesian sank off the coast of Palermo, Italy  during a freak storm early Aug. 19,  Giovanni Costantino , the founder and CEO of The Italian Sea Group which owns the company that built the ship in 2008, is shedding light on what he believes was an "endless chain of errors from the crew."

"Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors," he told Italian newspaper  Corriere della Sera  Aug. 21, in an interview translated from Italian. "The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor."

As Costantino explained, the crew should have known about the storm, calling the claim that it was sudden and unexpected untrue.

"It was all predictable. I have the weather charts here in front of me," he said. "Ask yourself: why were no fishermen from Porticello out that night? A fisherman reads the weather conditions and a ship doesn't? The storm was fully legible in all the weather charts. It couldn't have been ignored."

The CEO also asserted the Bayesian was "one of the safest boats in the world" and practically "unsinkable."

"I'm saying that, in fact, mistakes were made," he added. "There's a world between the arrival of a storm and the loading of water. A series of activities had to be done to avoid finding ourselves in that situation."

In order to have avoided the tragedy, he explains that the first step would have been to armor the hull and deck "by closing all the doors and hatches, after having placed the guests in the assembly point of the ship as per emergency procedure."

Twenty-two people were originally on the yacht when it sank, including 10 crew members and 12 guests. The group had come together to  celebrate the acquittal  of tech tycoon  Mike Lynch  on charges of fraud related to Hewlett Packard's $11 billion takeover of his company Autonomy Corp.

Unfortunately,  Lynch's body was recovered on Aug. 22  from the ship's hull. The bodies of Morgan Stanley International Chairman  Jonathan Bloomer  and his wife  Judy Bloomer  and Clifford Chance lawyer  Chris Morvillo  and his wife  Neda Morvillo   had been recovered on Aug. 21 .

Lynch's 18-year-old daughter  Hannah  is the sixth and final missing person, with rescuers still searching for her.

In all, 15 of the 22 passengers survived the wreckage—one of them Lynch's wife  Angela Bacares —while the body of the ship's cook  Renaldo   Thomas  was recovered following the sinking.

One survivor,  Charlotte Golunski ,  recounted the harrowing experience , sharing how she, her 1-year-old  Sophie  and partner  James Emsley  survived.

"For two seconds, I lost my daughter in the sea, then quickly hugged her amid the fury of the waves," she told Italian newspaper  La Repubblica  Aug. 20, per the  BBC . "It was all dark. In the water I couldn't keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others."

According to Golunski, a lifeboat was soon inflated that 11 of the survivors—including her family—climbed in.

Director of Sicily's Civil Protection Agency  Salvatore Cocina  had previously stated that it was likely a waterborne tornado—known as a waterspout—that struck the area and caused the tragedy.  He noted that the yacht was unfortunately  "in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Nearly two weeks after Ukrainian troops smashed through thin border defences and stormed into Russia’s Kursk region, Moscow has still not assembled the kind of overwhelming force needed to repel Kyiv’s incursion.

It has instead cobbled together units from around the country and from less active parts of the Ukrainian front, while deploying young conscripts performing their obligatory military service.

“People are horrified. We are overwhelmed with requests and can barely keep up,” said Ivan Chuvilayev, a representative of Go by the Forest, a Russian NGO helping citizens to avoid conscription.

In recent days, the organisation has been inundated with pleas for help from conscripts and their families as reports of young soldiers sent to Kursk emerged as Ukraine continued to advance. “It started in some regions, but now it is clear that conscripts are being mobilised from all over Russia,” said Chuvilayev.

“The initial force in the Kursk area was FSB Border Troops, Akhmat fighters from Chechnya, and local ground forces units taken from the Moscow or Leningrad military districts. Now, they have brought in additional forces subordinate from the Leningrad and Moscow military districts — some of them are conscripts,” said Dara Massicot, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Christopher Cavoli, Nato’s supreme allied commander for Europe, this week described Russia’s military response to the Kursk invasion as “slow and scattered”, attributing it in part to a complex command structure in the region, with the FSB security service notionally in charge.

According to military analysts and reports on Russian pro-war social media channels, Moscow may have moved several battalions from locations in Ukraine — including the Kharkiv, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia regions — to Kursk. It has also redeployed troops from its Kaliningrad region, according to Lithuania’s defence minister. But it has largely left untouched its forces in Donetsk, where they are steadily taking territory from heavily outmanned Ukrainian forces.

Although the pace of Ukraine’s invasion slowed last week, it was still advancing a few kilometres a day deeper into Russian territory.

On Thursday, it claimed to have fully captured Sudzha, a town in the Kursk region close to the border with a population of 5,000, which contains infrastructure pumping Russian gas to Europe. Ukraine’s military command says it controls roughly 1,000 sq km of Russian territory, although analysts think the area may be somewhat smaller.

On Friday, Ukrainian forces destroyed a key bridge over the Seym river in Kursk, Roman Alekhin, a pro-war blogger and adviser to the Kursk regional governor, wrote on his Telegram channel.

The loss of the Glushkovo bridge — and Ukrainian attacks on other bridges in the area — could make it much harder for Russian forces to defend a swath of the Kursk region to the west of Ukraine’s main incursion.

Despite Ukraine’s advances, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin appears unwilling to divert more significant resources from the eastern front, leaving him with few options.

“Putin hopes to contain the Ukrainian advance with mostly conscript forces. But can they push back the Ukrainian troops? I doubt it,” said Yury Fedorov, Russian military analyst.

The different contingents that Russia had assembled in Kursk had no experience of fighting together and had no time to learn, Fedorov added. Even after last week’s reinforcements, Russian forces in the region remained significantly smaller than those of Ukraine, although Russia did have air support, he said. The Russian air force has stepped up its use of powerful glide bombs to try to thwart Ukraine’s advance.

“Plugging the gap in Kursk clearly isn’t easy for Russia,” said Pavel Luzin, a non-resident senior fellow at the Center for European Policy Analysis. “By the second half of 2023, they were already reassigning personnel from other branches of the military [to Ukraine]. They were sending people from the navy, from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome, and so on.”

Vladimir Putin chairs a meeting with members of the Security Council at a residence outside Moscow

Russian conscripts, estimated by Luzin to number 300,000, are almost the only significant reserve available to the Kremlin. Putin has repeatedly stated that conscripts are not deployed to combat zones. Under Russian law, only conscripts who have served at least four months and have special skills can be sent to a combat zone. But the law can be easily defied.

“Conscripts are being forced to sign contracts, and their documents are being falsified to make it appear as though they have been serving for a long time,” said Chuvilayev from Go by the Forest.

“We know for sure that 250 people were transferred from one military unit in the Leningrad region to Kursk. We’ve received requests regarding conscripts from at least 10 units — so it’s fair to say around 1,000 people have been moved,” Chuvilayev added.

State Duma deputy Andrei Gurulev also confirmed that conscripts are fighting in Kursk. According to him, they even “repelled an attack by an entire brigade without any losses.”

“I feel sorry for the boys — no doubt. But we used to fight with them before,” Gurulev said. “There were no contract soldiers in Afghanistan. Were there any contract soldiers in the Red Army?”

Several petitions have appeared on Change.org from the mothers of conscripts, addressing Putin and demanding their children be withdrawn from the combat zone.

“You promised that they [the conscripts] wouldn’t be involved in military actions!!!! We believe in you. We are patriots!!!” Oksana wrote. “Elite, heavily armed brigades against our children with rifles. Every day, more parents find their children in videos and photos among the captured,” another mother, Irina, posted.

Pavel Baev, a research professor at the Peace Research Institute Oslo, said the “obvious solution” was for Russia to withdraw troops from its bridgeheads in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine that it established in a surprise attack in May.

But this would be a further embarrassment for Colonel-General Alexander Lapin, the Russian commander of the entire region, who has already been criticised for the flimsy defences in Kursk.

“He worries that Putin may not appreciate the idea that his vision of a ‘ sanitary zone ’— the goal of the Kharkiv offensive, according to Putin — has come to an end,” said Baev.

CEO of company that made sunken yacht in ‘disbelief’ as he claims vessel was ‘unsinkable’

CEO of company that made sunken yacht in ‘disbelief’ as he claims vessel was ‘unsinkable’

The 543 tonne yacht was dubbed 'the safest in the most absolute sense'.

The CEO of The Italian Sea Group has spoken out following the devastating sinking of a superyacht carrying 22 people off the coast of Italy.

The Italian Sea Group own the firm Perini Navi, who built the Bayesian - the 543 tonne yacht that sank earlier this week - in 2008.

The 56-meter long vessel, which boasts the world's tallest aluminium mast, was refurbished in 2020.

On Monday (August 19), the Bayesian was out at sea in Sicily when a sudden and powerful storm struck, causing the yacht to capsize.

The storm was so violent that it caused waterspouts, or rotating columns of air and mist, to appear over the sea, BBC News reports .

15 passengers onboard went on to be saved by emergency services, but sadly six people have been confirmed to have died while one other remains missing.

One body that's been identified is that of 'British Bill Gates', Mike Lynch.

It was confirmed today (August 22) that the tech tycoon's body had been recovered , but his 18-year-old daughter Hannah still remains missing.

As the search for the remaining missing passengers continues, The Italian Sea Group CEO Giovanni Costantino has spoken out and labeled the superyacht as 'unsinkable'.

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he told Sky News.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

Costantino added that their structure and keel made them 'unsinkable bodies'.

Addressing Monday's tragedy, the millionaire went on: "This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact."

He added that the sinking 'put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other'.

CCTV footage of the the storm hitting the yacht has been released where the vessel is seen sinking beneath the waves in a matter of a seconds.

The video confirmed that 'nothing could be done' for the yacht and its passengers because it 'disappeared in a very short time'.

The captain of the ship (who survived the ordeal) has since admitted that he didn't see the storm coming before it hit the superyacht.

It's unclear if anything could have been done had he known the storm was approaching, however.

The yacht was moored about a half-mile offshore off Porticello near Palermo at the time the storm hit around 5am local time.

Exiled russian oligarch’s 257’ superyacht amaryllis seen towed through palm beach.

The Amaryllis being towed past the former mansion of Henry Flagler, built in 1902

By John Jannarone and Alan Hatfield

The 257’ superyacht Amaryllis apparently owned by exiled Russian oligarch Andrey Borodin was towed past Palm Beach, FL on Friday morning, according to a visual account by CorpGov .

The yacht, whose owner is frequently cited as Mr. Borodin by enthusiast publications, moved slowly through the Lake Worth lagoon where bridges were raised for its passage. A towboat with flashing lights about 150 feet ahead pulled the Amaryllis , built by German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen in 2011.

While CorpGov could not officially confirm Mr. Borodin as the owner of the vessel, his wife, socialite Tatiana Korsakova, has posted dozens of Instagram photos and videos aboard the Amaryllis. A yacht broker interviewed by CorpGov confirmed that Ms. Korsakova is indeed aboard the Amaryllis in the photos and videos.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tatiana Korsakova (@tati_vk)

The sighting comes as billions of dollars in Russian-owned yachts have been seized around the world as a result of international sanctions. CNN has published an extensive list of seized vessels, which were taken in harbor cities including Mallorca, Spain and London.

However, it is unclear if the Amaryllis was being seized or voluntarily towed. Very large yachts often choose to be towed because bridges are required to raise for them, according to the yacht broker.

The former Bank of Moscow chief was granted political asylum in the UK in February 2013 after fleeing what he alleged to be politically-motivated fraud and embezzlement charges. Mr. Borodin would go on to be tried and convicted in abstentia in Russian Court in 2018, but not before managing to enlist a number of prominent American lawmakers to lobby Washington for a U.S. visa. Despite Russian extradition requests to the UK government, Borodin’s controversial attempts to make large donations to the NHS, and the uncovering of an assassination plot against his life, the fugitive banker remains overseas, having been granted access to his Swiss bank accounts and having made several notable London real estate purchases during his time in exile.

Mr. Borodin is widely listed as a billionaire, but his total wealth remains difficult to confirm accurately, with the governments of Switzerland and the Bahamas having been asked to help the Russian government in its legal case. In 2012, Borodin purchased the UK’s then-most expensive home, an 80-hectare 18th-century estate in Oxfordshire, for upwards of $217 million. In 2017 he was granted access to personal Swiss accounts holding a reported $378 million. The Amaryllis was purchased for a reported $120 million.

Mr. Borodin did not immediately respond to an emailed query from CorpGov , while the FBI declined to comment. An emailed query to The Department of Homeland Security was not returned.
