The Booming Asia Pacific Superyacht Market

The Asia Pacific superyacht market broke record yacht sales in the last year, this unprecedented performance has stemmed from an overall increase in yacht ownership and yacht chartering across the region. In this article, we analyse the current market and highlight the key trends that are painting a new era for the Asia Pacific superyacht sector.

The Asia Pacific Market

The Asia Pacific region offers one of the best coastlines in the world, stretching over 135,000 kilometres. Regarded as a yachting paradise, Asia houses thousands of islands in the Pacific Ocean, which are known tourist spots that boast modern cities with authentic culture, luxury beach resorts with white sandy beaches and luscious tropical habitats to explore. The Pacific Ocean is ideal for sailing and its rich marine life offers exceptional diving and snorkeling along the coral reefs.

As the recognised yachting hub of Asia, Hong Kong has been the most active country in the superyacht sector many years, with its maritime infrastructure and competitive fiscal regime attracting many leading global yacht brokers to set up regional offices. However, more recently there has been a surge of growth in the yachting sector across the Asia Pacific, which has led to a development in shipyards, new builds, manufacturing partnerships and sales offices across the region.

Yacht brokers have begun targeting less developed countries in South East Asia, including Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. It seems this strategy is proving successful, as yacht brokers in Asia have reported record sales in the last year. An example is one of Asia’s largest yacht brokers, Boat Lagoon Yachting, which holds offices in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Maldives.

Another shift in the Asia Pacific superyacht market landscape that is showing promise is the developing yachting sector in China. Clouded with stringent regulation for many years, China deterred any attraction of foreign investment or supported development in its maritime infrastructure. Whilst its yachting sector is in its early life cycle, the country recently made many positive advancements, which has contributed to the yachting ‘boom’ in the Asia-Pacific.

In contrast to China, Hong Kong holds a rich maritime history and is excluded from heavy tax on luxury goods, which has been the main factor stunting China’s growth in the sector. Hong Kong proposes an attractive fiscal regime for yacht importation and VAT registration, which has strengthened its position in the sector.

In December 2016, the Hong Kong Marine Department relaxed the rules for visiting yachts and their crew, which boosted yachting in the country. Many leading global yacht brokers expanded to Hong Kong years ago to take advantage of the Asia Pacific market, including Simpson Marine in 1984, which has since expanded its presence across Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. Prestigious yacht brokers such as Azimut yachts, Camper and Nicholsons, Benetti and Burgess Yachts set up an office in Hong Kong, which have been very active in the market. It has been noted that there have been record sales across the board for yacht brokers in Hong Kong, which includes Azimut and Simpson Marine.

After the U.S, China has the second highest concentration of billionaires globally, as the markets target audience; this poses huge potential and a promising outlook for the regions superyacht sector. Industry statistics state the Asia Pacific yacht market is witnessing strong growth and by 2026, Global Industry Analysts have predicted China’s yacht market to be worth $1.2 billion.

A post-pandemic trend demonstrated an increase in yachting in the region, due to more locals choosing the isolated, luxury travel option, which led them to discover more of the beautiful landscape on their doorstep. As a result, there has been a spike in Chinese yacht ownership and even over the last decade; the interest in the local yachting scene has been gradually rising with Chinese sailing clubs popping up across the region, local regatta races and international sporting events attracting global attention. Shaping this trend is the consistent improvement of living standards, which has resulted in consumers purchasing more luxury goods, such as yachts.

The rise in yacht ownership has slowly increased China’s global yacht market share; to put this in perspective, according to the China Transport Association’s Cruise Yacht Branch, the total number of yachts in China will increase from 38,100 to 163,510 between 2020 and 2025. This clearly demonstrates the changing landscape in recent years, and a key factor driving this is China supporting new development in the sector, with the aim to boost the country’s consumption and attract tourism.  

Examples include the construction of local shipyards producing new builds. There have also been amendments to the regulation in place including loosening the country’s yacht registration standards, the yacht ownership criteria, the entry/exit requirements and easing the requirements for traveling between provinces. They have also introduced non-resident yacht registration and reduced yacht importation tax by a further 5% to encourage new business to the sector.

In doing this, it has widened access to the superyacht market in China and encouraged yachting for both pleasure and commercial use. Yacht chartering has become more popular, which boosts tourism and allows consumers to explore the great destinations on offer. Industry research states that domestic chartering across countries in Asia is increasingly popular; Simpson Marine noted there has been unprecedented growth in this area, especially in Hong Kong and Thailand.

Many leading global yacht brands have invested into Asia by forming manufacturing partnerships, for example leading Asian superyacht broker, Simpson Marine and the prestigious Italian shipyard, Sanlorenzo. World-renowned catamaran manufactures, Lagoon and Aquila, have been very successful in the Asian market, with yacht sales spanning across China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar.

Another is Ferretti Group, which set up 14 regional distributors and sold $70 million worth of yacht sales in Asia Pacific in 2020. They also demonstrated its commitment to developing the regions maritime infrastructure by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Sanya Central Business District.

As the recognised yachting hub of China, Sanya is part of the Hainan Province, which is set to become a trade free zone by 2025. The construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port will exclude import tariffs on yachts imported into the island for transportation and tourism, value added tax and consumption tax for foreign exporters. The number of registered yachts in Sanya has increased from 10 to 500 in the last decade, and in last year, apart from the surge in yacht registrations, the Hainan province accommodated 1.13 million tourists, which is only predicted to increase due to the potential the zone promises for the developing yachting sector.

It is obvious that the Asia Pacific superyacht sector is developing rapidly, whilst advancements in regulation in China provide new potential for the region, such as the Hainan FTZ, there are still barriers in the maritime infrastructure in place, including the less developed neighbouring countries. However, as the market trends suggest, yachting has become increasing popular in recent years , the shift in behaviour has created a new market for the Asian superyacht sector and this will only result in the sector maturing to capitalise on this growth. With more development in shipyards, suppliers and well-equipped marinas, plus the rising number of yacht sales across the region, the outlook only looks positive for the future Asia Pacific yacht sector, and the booming economic growth it will provide for the many countries it will bring with it.

Inaugural Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit 2024: Dates and Location Revealed

We are thrilled to announce the details for the first edition of the Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit 2024, marking a significant step towards the development of the Asian superyacht market and the aspiration to draw more yachts to the region.

Taking place on the 5th and 6th of June 2024, the inaugural summit will be hosted in the vibrant city of Hong Kong, showcasing its potential as a prime destination for superyachts. The Renaissance Harbour View Hotel Hong Kong has been chosen as the venue for this two-day event, where key decision-makers from diverse Asian regions and global professionals from the superyacht industry will engage in crucial discussions.

The primary focus of the Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit will be on fostering the growth of Asia as a prominent superyacht cruising destination and exploring strategies to attract Asian clients to engage in the construction, purchase, and charter of yachts.

Inaugural Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit 2024 Programme

On 5 and 6 June 2024, Superyacht Times will host the first edition of the Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit. This two-day event will be held in Hong Kong at the Renaissance Harbour View Hotel. The Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit will be an important meeting place for key decision-makers from the different Asian regions, as well as global superyacht industry professionals. The programme will focus on the development of Asia as a superyacht cruising destination and how to get more Asian clients interested in the construction, purchase, and charter of yachts. There will be a total of around 25 speakers, including yacht owners, captains, managers, builders, designers, and agents.

Day One will start with a presentation from Ralph Dazert, Head of Intelligence at Superyacht Times, on the state of the Asia-Pacific superyacht market. K.C Lam from InvestHK will then welcome participants to Hong Kong, and give an overview of investment opportunities available in this financial hub. 

A panel discussion on “Managing and Operating yachts in the Asia-Pacific’ will look at the superyacht sector from an operational perspective, and challenges faced by yachts cruising in the region. There will be an overview of the maintenance and refit of yachts already available in Asia, and a review of the infrastructure currently in situ, while also discussing topics such as insurance and training.

Confirmed speakers are: Yerin Hobson, CEO, Arrow Monaco ; Andy Shorten, The Lighthouse Consultancy ; Colin Dawson, Managing Director, The George Group and Technical Representative on behalf of Howden Insurance Brokers ; Nigel Tang, Captain of the 53.4-metre Nonni II and Gordon Fernandes of Asia Pacific Superyachts

This panel discussion will followed by a Q&A session with Omi Tanchanok Vajarodaya, owner of the 31.45m Astondoa motor yacht For Your Eyes Only .

The Asia-Pacific region has a huge amount to offer charter clients, with the islands of Thailand and Indonesia, the waters of the Maldives, Seychelles and beyond, yet it is not one of the most heavily frequented regions for superyachts. The next panel discussion covers the potential of the region, and will discuss ways to encourage more owners to bring their yachts to Asia. Confirmed Speakers include: David Good, CEO, Australian International Marine Export Group (AIMEX) ; Lies Sol of Northrop & Johnson ; Eric Noyel of Fraser Asia; and Julien Solari, Asia Chief Commercial Officer,  Camper & Nicholsons

After a networking lunch Issam Kazim from Dubai Economy and Tourism will talk about how Dubai became a hub for HNWIs and their superyachts. Followed by a panel discussion with local experts looking at ‘selling superyachts in Asia’, the current state of the market, how it has developed over the past decade, along with the potential of the region and its individual countries, the owners and what needs to change – among other topics. Confirmed speakers are: James Clayton, Sales Director, Simpson Superyachts ; Mark Woodmansey, Head of Brokerage (Asia) at Burgess ; Carmen Lau Stratton, Senior Advisor, Camper & Nicholsons

Day One of the Summit concludes with a Gala Networking Dinner to be held at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club.

Day two of the Summit launches with ‘The Business of Marinas’ and how to build a successful marina in Asia, from leveraging regional market trends to embracing sustainable practices, while dissecting the blueprint for a prosperous marina venture. Confirmed speakers: Jonathan Sit of ONE°15 Marina and Ekrem Reyancioglu of Poralu Marine.

With shipyards fixing their sights on the Asian market, is it necessary for superyacht designs to be tailored specifically to buyers from this region? The topic will cover the design requests made by Asian or Asia-based clients, the rising popularity of certain models in the region, the cruising trends of clients within the region, and the differences between the various countries within the region from a design perspective. Confirmed speakers are: Giorgio Cassetta, Founder of Cassetta Yacht Designers ; Gabriele Stella, Head of Sales, Sanlorenzo ,; Federico Rossi of   Rossinavi ; and Burak Akgül of Turquoise Yachts

Yann Martinie de Maisonneuve, Co-Founder & Director of Pacific High Cruises, will talk about ‘Creating a Charter Market in Indonesia with Phinisi yachts’ and explore the potential of Indonesia's charter market and how to navigate regulatory challenges, tap into local demand, and create unforgettable experiences for travellers amidst Indonesia's stunning archipelago.

The following session looks at ‘The future of yacht construction in Asia’, with shipyards such as Cheoy Lee, Silver Yachts, Ocean Alexander and Horizon Group already producing superyachts in the region. The session will look at the wider state of the Asian yacht building market, and the panel will evaluate the challenges currently faced by builders within the region, looking into topics such as the labour market, supply chain and local demand.  Confirmed Speakers: Rod Davis, Chief Operating Officer, Silver Yachts , and Glenn Armstrong, Maritime Cook Islands.

Nick Davies, Managing Director at Cookson Adventures, participates in a Q & A session on ‘Travelling off the beaten track’ and this is followed by the keynote interview with Rose Damen, Managing Director of Damen Yachting , looking at the value of the Asia-Pacific region, the yard's strategy over the coming years, and the changing landscape of the superyacht construction sector. Closing comments by Superyacht Times will bring the Summit to its conclusion.

Some recommendations for day trips on the water are described below. Combining boating and land based sightseeing in any trip is what makes Hong Kong so special as a superyacht destination.

The different islands are all connected by local ferries which is a must do in itself. None of the distances are far and public transport and taxis are readily available and every island has helicopter access.

Anchor off in any of the multiple protected bays of the following islands which offer simple seafood restaurants:

• Lamma Island – opposite Aberdeen; two bays with restaurants connected by a pleasant hike
• Lantau Island – with high mountains, beautiful trails and long beaches where you can indulge in kite surfing, eating, visiting local villages and the big bronze buddha (and airport)
• Peng Chau Island – a horseshoe island steeped in local tradition
• Cheung Chau Island – with its many local fishing boats and shipyard, it is famous for its bun festival with friendly local fishing folk. Cheung Chau hosts an eclectic variety of inhabitants including San
• San Lai Island – the Olympic windsurf champion who has a school here.
• Po Toi Island – a hangout for the local sailors where the sea is very blue due to the start of the South China Sea
• Sai Kung Island – hidden up in the stunningly beautiful north east territories, now a bustling little city in itself, looks like Saint Tropez some 15 years ago with local pleasure junks coming and going. Along the pubic quayside you can choose your own live fish to be prepared for you.

Hong Kong is famous for its hiking trails and there are numerous monasteries, waterfalls and historical places of interest. For the geologists there are outstanding rock formations on the Nine Pin Islands.

During any given weekend, the three major yacht clubs organise various sail races for big and small boats in at least 2 distinct areas: Middle Island, Hebe Haven and most weekends in Victoria harbor as well.

Day Trip Suggestions

Day 1 Try the Central and Western district walk which will lead you through Hong Kong’s most famous art galleries near Hollywood Rd. and Man Mo Temple. Remember to catch a ride on the longest escalator in town, linking Central to Mid-levels. Round up the evening with a cruise through Victoria Harbour whilst enjoying ‘A Symphony of Lights’.

Day 2 – Lantau island Visit the biggest Buddha with Ngong Ping Cable Car, Cheung Chau Island (Lunch), Cocktails in one of the art galleries.

Day 4 – Trip to Macao Portugese History, Circle du Soleil or Dancing on Water Show, Venitian Casino and dinner can provide a wonderful trip.

Day 5 – Hong Kong Flagstaff Museum (Hong Kong Park) or Maritime Museum. The maritime museum is a little gem and is situated next to the Star Ferry.
