Welcome to the Axe Yacht Club

The Club was formed in 1936 as the Seaton Sailing & Motor Boat Club. Renamed Axe Yacht Club shortly after WWII , the Club now has over 900 members.

Axmouth Harbour

The Club’s objective is to promote & facilitate a range of water sports, whilst enjoying & preserving the beautiful Axmouth Harbour.

The large modern clubhouse is situated in a stunning location overlooking Lyme Bay. Activities on the water are supported by a full programme of social events.

Sailing at AYC

If you are interested in sailing, whether racing or just pottering, there is something for everyone at AYC .

Cruiser Sailing

Cruising is a very popular Club activity……..

……..with AYC yachts being regular visitors to other ports along the south coast, across the Channel, and further afield.

AYC rally to Dartmouth.

For those keen to race as well as cruise, there is a programme of bay races. Neighbouring clubs are invited to take part in the annual Axe Regatta.

Brown Sail Fleet

Cornish Shrimpers, Drascombe Luggers, Devon Yawls & Beer Luggers are amongst the ‘brown sail’ dayboats which sail in the bay.

Dinghy Sailing

Dinghy sailors launch from the beach in front of the clubhouse to sail in Lyme Bay and are also able to enjoy the more sheltered surroundings of the River Axe & Axmouth Harbour.

Dinghy Sailing in Lyme Bay

The Club provides the opportunity for members of all ages to try dinghy sailing with more experienced sailors. Dinghies suitable for adults & older teenagers were purchased thanks to a Sport England grant.

Dinghy Sailing on the River Axe

River races are held during the evening, to coincide with spring tides, from May to October and the series is open to all classes of dinghy.

There are also individual cup races on the river – the Round the Island Race, the Shower Flow Race…..

Dinghy Sailing in Axmouth Harbour

…and the Harbour Race.

Axe One Design Fleet

The Axe One Design ( AOD ) is a traditional 12 foot clinker built Bermudan rigged dinghy which was designed specifically for members of the AYC in 1951. There are currently 9 AODs in the fleet.

Motorboating

Motor boaters at AYC have a wide variety of craft and enjoy a range of activities including angling, power-boating, scuba diving & water ski-ing.

Some are moored on the pontoons during the season, whilst others use the slipway for launch and retrieval.

Cruising by Motorboat

Some of the larger motor boats venture along the south coast, across the channel and further afield, often meeting up with sailors from the Axe.

Lyme Bay offers a variety of fishing opportunities for the boat angler. The many wrecks offshore offer excellent fishing for bass, pollack and cod……

…….whilst plaice and mackerel can be caught within several hundred yards of the beach.

Black bream, cod, pollack, conger eels, dogfish and huss inhabit the reefs.

Pontoon moorings

The Club maintains around 100 pontoon moorings in Axmouth Harbour for members’ use from April to October. There is a waiting list.

Volunteering at AYC

Members are involved in all aspects of running the club. Facilities are maintained by the members for the members. We are definitely NOT a marina!

Families at AYC

Whether your interest is sailing or motorboating, we aim to encourage the whole family to get out on the water and have fun.

Family Membership

Family membership is available for one or two co-habiting adults & their children under the age of 18 years.

Cadet Membership

A child 7-17 years may apply to join as a cadet member in association with an adult member of their immediate family or as part of a family membership.

There are currently over 100 cadet members.

Young Person Membership

Young people aged 18-25 years enjoy a discounted membership.

A Cadet Activity Week, run by parents & other volunteers, is held during the summer holidays.

Cadet Week - Pirate Day

Rya training.

The Club is a recognised training centre for RYA shore based courses including Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster, Diesel Engine, First Aid and VHF Radio.

RYA powerboat courses (powerboat levels 1 & 2 and safety boat courses) have been run at AYC since 2015 and the Club has more recently been approved as a recognised training centre for dinghy sailing.

Jubilee Parade of Boats

The Parade of Boats for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 demonstrated the diverse range of boats that AYC members enjoy.

A luxury £113m “mega-yacht” which has its own theatre, spa and a fleet of speedboats is due to visit Plymouth tomorrow. The plush Le Dumont-d’Urville is currently in the North East Atlantic, between Ireland and England, and on its way to Britain’s Ocean City.

The cruise ship is due to arrive at 8am on Friday , for a short stay, and will berth at Millbay . The vessel is operated by Ponant Cruises and classed as an expedition mega-yacht.

It is ice strengthened and often cruises around Scandinavia and Iceland as well as other “offbeat itineraries” including to Caribbean, Baltic, Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, South America and Australia. Built in 2019 at a cost of about £113m, the Wallis and Futuna-flagged ship carries up to 264 passengers, in 92 cabins, and 112 crew.

The seven-deck vessel is named after famous French explorer Jules Dumont d’Urville, who charted the Pacific. It has a sundeck with swimming pool, a retractable marina platform for deploying water sports equipment, and its own fleet of Zodiacs, large speed boats used for passenger tendering and landings in remote locations.

Jon Walton, Plymouth Waterfront Partnership’s chief executive and waterfront manager, said: “We are delighted to welcome guests and crew of the Le Dumont-d’Urville to Britain's Ocean City on Friday.”

Cruise ship visits have given Plymouth a £1.5m boost so far this year. Vessels stopping at Britain’s Ocean City have brought 10,000 visitors, many of them spending cash in Plymouth and the surrounding areas.

Plymouth City Centre Company’s newly-released draft business plan for the next five years shows Plymouth had 10 cruise ship visits in 2023 and an increase this year. Le Dumont-d’Urville is the 10th arrival in 2024 with another, Artania, still to come next month. The ambition is to grow this to 30 visits a year.

Last weekend the £116m Amadea arrived in Plymouth , berthing at Millbay, with passengers visiting the waterfront during the highly successful Seafest celebrations . The Japanese-built vessel carried up to 624 passengers and 280 crew members. It has 11 decks, with 254 cabins and two royal suites.

Mr Walton said: “This has been a fantastic year for cruise ship visits to Plymouth and is testament to the collaborative work of the Plymouth Cruise Partnership. As always, the welcome we give is second to none, and I give my heartfelt thanks to the Cruise Ambassadors who volunteer their time. The feedback from guests and crew is amazing; I would also like to thank Doug and Annemarie Kerr who lead the volunteer team and who are so important to the partnership.”

Power boats are only permitted to launch and recover from the Axe Yacht Club slipway. There are no public slipways at Seaton Beach, Axmouth Harbour or along the Axe River.  Use of the slipway at the Axe Yacht Club can only be made prior arrangement with the Club. The speed limit throughout the Harbour is FIVE KNOTS. This limit continues 180 metres South beyond the Harbour Mouth.

There are several speed restrictions in place across Seaton Bay that Power Boats must adhere to. An eight knot speed limit is in place from Seaton Hole in the West to the Axe Yacht Club in the East marked by four yellow markers. A further restriction of five knots extends South from the Harbour Entrance for 180 metres. Power Boats must be vigilant at all times and maintain a constant look out for other water vessels and users.

In settled conditions it is possible to anchor due south of the Axe Yacht Club club house (white building with grey slate roof & white mast) in approximately five metres of water, with a sand bottom and reasonably good holding. A more sheltered anchorage can be found off the village of Beer, although remains open to the South and East. Due to poor holding and limited room, there is no anchorage within the Harbour.

If you find yourself in an emergency situation or spot someone else in trouble, you should call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.  How to call for Help at Sea
