Small sailboats give you the freedom to trailer your or car-top your boat and go anywhere, and they’re perfect for learning the nuances of sailing. Difference Between a Daysailer and a Pocket Cruiser

While there are many different types of sailboat on the market and there is no single definition of either a daysailer or a pocket cruiser, they are used in a particular way, as the names imply. The term daysailer covers a huge array of sailboats, smaller and sometimes larger, and is generally defined as any day boat used for local sailing, with a simple rig, and easy to get underway. A pocket cruiser typically offers a cabin and head, and adequate accommodations for an overnight stay and sometimes longer cruises. Having said that, there is a large overlap between the two in many instances, so the lines may become blurred. 

What Size is a Small Sailboat?

Small is a relative term of course, but in general—and for the purposes of this article—a small sailboat is one that could be sailed by a small crew, often with one or two people aboard. It will have a simple rig and be trailerable, and it might be either a daysailer or pocket-cruiser style vessel as above. Within those categories, there are many models and styles, but when it comes to length we consider a sailboat as small when it’s under 30 feet in overall length. 

The Best Sailboats Under 30 Feet

Pocket cruiser: Beneteau First 27.  The Beneteau First 27 is a modern example of a pocket cruiser, earning Cruising World ’s Boat of the Year award in the Pocket Cruiser category in 2022. With space for up to six people accommodated in a separated bow-cabin and open saloon, it offers families the chance to go farther, explore more, and cruise in comfort. There is a galley with freshwater and a head, adding to the interior home comforts. The sailboat itself is modern, fast, and stable, designed by Sam Manuard, and has been designed to be incredibly safe and almost unsinkable thanks to its three watertight chambers. The handling is also refreshingly intuitive, with a well-designed cockpit, simple deck controls, and double winches allowing it to be sailed solo, by two people, or a small crew.

Daysailer: Alerion 28.  You’ll certainly turn heads cruising along in an Alerion 28, a daysailer whose forerunner by the same name was designed by Nathanael Herreshoff in 1912 and then updated with a modern underbody for fiberglass production by Carl Schumacher in the late 1980s. This pretty daysailer manages to combine a traditional silhouette and classic feel, with very modern engineering creating an excellent package. Over 470 of these sailboats were built and sold in the past 30 years, making it one of the most popular modern daysailers on the water. With a small cabin and saloon, complete with miniature galley area, it offers respite from the sun or wind and the option for a night aboard. The cockpit offers a beautiful sailing experience, with plenty of space for the whole family.

The Best Sailboats Under 25 Feet

Pocket cruiser: Cornish Crabber 24.  British manufacturer Cornish Crabber has been producing beautiful, traditional style small sailboats for decades, ensuring they honor their heritage both in the construction style and appearance of their boats. The Cornish Crabber 24 is the most iconic of their range and dates back to the 1980s. It offers a simple yet surprisingly spacious interior layout with cabin, galley, and head, and a good sized cockpit, as well as seating for up to six people. It’s the perfect family sailboat, with clever use of storage as well as just under 5000 pounds of displacement providing stability and easy tacking. While we’ve classified it as a daysailer, it could easily cross into the pocket cruiser category, as it offers excellent sailing performance in almost all conditions as well as having a small cabin, galley, and head. Loved for its safety, stability, ease of handling and simple maintenance, it makes for a good first family boat for getting out onto the bay or lake.

Pocket cruiser: CapeCutter 19.  This is another model that combines the beauty of the traditional silhouettes with modern-day advancements. The design originates from the classic gaff cutter work boats, but today offers excellent performance—in fact it’s one of the fastest small gaffers in the world. The interior is cleverly spacious, with four berths, two of which convert into a saloon, as well as a simple galley area. The Best Small Sailboats for Beginners

When it comes to learning to sail, it’s important to have a boat that is easy to handle. There’s no quicker way to put yourself or your family off sailing than to start off with a boat that is either too big or too complicated. When choosing your first boat we recommend the following characteristics:

  • Small: The benefits of starting off with a small boat are many, as we’ve seen above. They’re easier to control as well as to moor, and they react more quickly to steering and sails. They can be trailered and launched easily, and the loads generated are much lower than on bigger, heavier boats.
  • Easy to sail: You want a boat that is stable and forgiving of mistakes, doesn’t capsize easily, and isn’t too overpowered in a stronger breeze. Keep things simple and learn as you go.
  • Simple sail configuration: Choosing a boat that can be rigged by one person in a few minutes, and easily sailed solo, makes it easier to take along inexperienced crews. With regards to the rig, all you need are a halyard to hoist the mainsail and a sheet to control the mainsail.
  • Tiller steering: We recommend boats with tiller steering over wheel steering when starting out. The tiller allows you to get a real feel for the boat and how the rudder works as it moves through the water.

Do You Know the Parts of a Boat

Learning to sail is not just about feeling the wind in your sails. You also become familiar with the vessel that will be part of your new lifelong adventure. A sailboat can seem daunting with all its moving parts, but it is quite simple.

I recently learned the term Keel Hauling, and I was a bit shocked at not knowing the reference.  When you sail, you take on an entirely new language of words, sayings, and jargon.  A few of us sailors even embrace the same Jimmy Buffet songs as part of our perennial sailing playlist.  (that is another story for a different time)

My wife, who has sailed for over 20 years, is competent under most conditions at sail and knows her way around our vessel, but I was surprised that she didn’t know some of the simple terms that we sailors use daily. There are some fundamental terms that all sailors learn as they begin their sailing career and the rest of the information follows along as you spend more time on the water.

When you embark on a sailing education in ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing, you learn about the anatomy of a boat. These are part of the fundamentals of sailing.  While these few terms are interchangeable among boats, they certainly are not the only terms you’ll learn, but they are the beginning of a new language when you become an ASA certified sailor.

Anatomy of a sailboat

This is a keelboat. It is different from a dinghy in that it is larger than 20 feet and has a keel. Keelboats start at around 20 feet with no upper limit in length. A 200-foot megayacht is considered a keelboat.

Sailboat Terminology

Dinghy – A small sailboat usually under 20 feet long and open for most of its length.

Keel – A fixed appendage on the bottom of the hull that provides sideways resistance needed to counter the force of the wind on the sails. The keel also carries ballast , usually iron or lead, the weight of which counteracts the force of the wind that causes a sailboat to heel , or lean over.

Hull – The watertight structural shell of a boat.

Bow – The forward part of a boat

Stern – The aft part of the boat. 

Transom – The more or less flat surface that closes the hull at the stern

Rudder – The sailboat is steered by a fin-shaped appendage attached beneath the boat toward the stern which can be rotated to change the angle at which the water strikes it. Water must flow past the rudder in order fo rit to work so it will not turn the boat while at rest.

The rudder is controlled by a wheel or a tiller at the helm of the boat. The person steering the boat is the helmsman .

Cockpit – The area of the boat, usually recessed into the deck , from which the boat is steered and sailed.

Deck – The generally horizontal surface that encloses the top of the hull.

Companionway – The entrance from the cockpit or deck to the cabin.

Stanchion – A metal post that supports lifelines .

Lifeline – A wire supported on stanchions around the perimeter of the deck to prevent crew from falling overboard.

Pulpit – A guardrail at the bow or stern of a boat to which (usually) the lifelines are connected.

Guide to Understanding Sail Rig Types (with Pictures)

There are a lot of different sail rig types and it can be difficult to remember what's what. So I've come up with a system. Let me explain it in this article.

What are the different types of sail rig? The sail rig is determined by the number of masts and the layout and shape of sails. Most modern ships are fore-and-aft rigged, while old ships are square-rigged. Rigs with one mast are sloops and cutters. Ketches, yawls, brigs, and schooners have two masts. Barques have three masts. Rigs can contain up to seven masts.

'Yeah, that's a gaff brig, and that a Bermuda cutter' - If you don't know what this means (neither did I) and want to know what to call a two-masted ship with a square-rigged mainsail, this article is definitely for you.

This article is part 2 of my series on sails and rig types. Part 1 is all about the different types of sails. If you want to know everything there is to know about sails once and for all, I really recommend you read it. It gives a good overview of sail types and is easy to understand.

The Ultimate Guide to Sail Types and Rigs (with Pictures)

First of all, what is a sail rig? A sail rig is the way in which the sails are attached to the mast(s). In other words, it's the setup or configuration of the sailboat. The rig consists of the sail and mast hardware. The sail rig and sail type are both part of the sail plan. We usually use the sail rig type to refer to the type of boat.

Let's start by taking a look at the most commonly used modern sail rigs. Don't worry if you don't exactly understand what's going on. At the end of this article, you'll understand everything about rig types.

The sail rig and sail plan are often used interchangeably. When we talk of the sail rig we usually mean the sail plan . Although they are not quite the same. A sail plan is the set of drawings by the naval architect that shows the different combinations of sails and how they are set up for different weather conditions. For example a light air sail plan, storm sail plan, and the working sail plan (which is used most of the time).

So let's take a look at the three things that make up the sail plan.

The 3 things that make up the sail plan

I want to do a quick recap of my previous article. A sail plan is made up of:

  • Mast configuration - refers to the number of masts and where they are placed
  • Sail type - refers to the sail shape and functionality
  • Rig type - refers to the way these sails are set up on your boat

I'll explore the most common rig types in detail later in this post. I've also added pictures to learn to recognize them more easily. ( Click here to skip to the section with pictures ).

How to recognize the sail plan?

So how do you know what kind of boat you're dealing with? If you want to determine what the rig type of a boat is, you need to look at these three things:

  • Check the number of masts, and how they are set up.
  • You look at the type of sails used (the shape of the sails, how many there are, and what functionality they have).
  • And you have to determine the rig type, which means the way the sails are set up.

Below I'll explain each of these factors in more detail.

The most common rig types on sailboats

To give you an idea of the most-used sail rigs, I'll quickly summarize some sail plans below and mention the three things that make up their sail plan.

  • Bermuda sloop - one mast, one mainsail, one headsail, fore-and-aft rigged
  • Gaff cutter - one mast, one mainsail, two staysails, fore-and-aft rigged
  • Gaff schooner - two-masted (foremast), two mainsails, staysails, fore-and-aft rigged
  • Gaff ketch - two-masted (mizzen), two mainsails, staysails, fore-and-aft rigged
  • Full-rigged ship or tall ship - three or more masts, mainsail on each mast, staysails, square-rigged

The first word is the shape and rigging of the mainsail. So this is the way the sail is attached to the mast. I'll go into this later on. The second word refers to the mast setup and amount of sails used.

Most sailboats are Bermuda sloops. Gaff-rigged sails are mostly found on older, classic boats. Square-rigged sails are generally not used anymore.

But first I want to discuss the three factors that make up the sail plan in more detail.

Ways to rig sails

There are basically two ways to rig sails:

  • From side to side, called Square-rigged sails - the classic pirate sails
  • From front to back, called Fore-and-aft rigged sails - the modern sail rig

Almost all boats are fore-and-aft rigged nowadays.

Square sails are good for running downwind, but they're pretty useless when you're on an upwind tack. These sails were used on Viking longships, for example. Their boats were quicker downwind than the boats with fore-and-aft rigged sails, but they didn't handle as well.

The Arabs first used fore-and-aft rigged sails, making them quicker in difficult wind conditions.

Quick recap from part 1: the reason most boats are fore-and-aft rigged today is the increased maneuverability of this configuration. A square-rigged ship is only good for downwind runs, but a fore-and-aft rigged ship can sail close to the wind, using the lift to move forward.

The way the sails are attached to the mast determines the shape of the sail. The square-rigged sails are always attached the same way to the mast. The fore-and-aft rig, however, has a lot of variations.

The three main sail rigs are:

  • Bermuda rig - most used - has a three-sided (triangular) mainsail
  • Gaff rig - has a four-sided mainsail, the head of the mainsail is guided by a gaff
  • Lateen rig - has a three-sided (triangular) mainsail on a long yard

The Bermuda is the most used, the gaff is a bit old-fashioned, and the lateen rig is outdated (about a thousand years). Lateen rigs were used by the Moors. The Bermuda rig is actually based on the Lateen rig (the Dutch got inspired by the Moors).

Other rig types that are not very common anymore are:

  • Junk rig - has horizontal battens to control the sail
  • Settee rig - Lateen with the front corner cut off
  • Crabclaw rig

Mast configuration

Okay, we know the shape of the mainsail. Now it's time to take a look at the mast configuration. The first thing is the number of masts:

  • one-masted boats
  • two-masted boats
  • three-masted boats
  • four masts or up
  • full or ship-rigged boats - also called 'ships' or 'tall ships'

I've briefly mentioned the one and two mast configurations in part 1 of this article. In this part, I'll also go over the three-masted configurations, and the tall ships as well.

A boat with one mast has a straightforward configuration because there's just one mast. You can choose to carry more sails or less, but that's about it.

A boat with two masts or more gets interesting. When you add a mast, it means you have to decide where to put the extra mast: in front, or in back of the mainmast. You can also choose whether or not the extra mast will carry an extra mainsail. The placement and size of the extra mast are important in determining what kind of boat we're dealing with. So you start by locating the largest mast, which is always the mainmast.

From front to back: the first mast is called the foremast. The middle mast is called the mainmast. And the rear mast is called the mizzenmast.

What is the mizzenmast? The mizzenmast is the aft-most (rear) mast on a sailboat with three or more masts or the mast behind the mainmast on a boat with two masts. The mizzenmast carries the mizzen sail. On a two-masted boat, the mizzenmast is always (slightly) smaller than the mainmast. What is the purpose of the mizzen sail? The mizzen sail provides more sail area and flexibility in sail plan. It can be used as a big wind rudder, helping the sailor to have more control over the stern of the ship. It pushes the stern away from the wind and forces the bow in the opposite way. This may help to bring the bow into the wind when at anchor.

I always look at the number of masts first, because this is the easiest to spot. So to make this stuff more easy to understand, I've divided up the rig types based on the number of masts below.

Why would you want more masts and sail anyways?

Good question. The biggest advantage of two masts compared to one (let's say a ketch compared to a sloop), is that it allows you to use multiple smaller sails to get the same sail area. It also allows for shorter masts.

This means you reduce the stress on the rigging and the masts, which makes the ketch rig safer and less prone to wear and tear. It also doesn't capsize as quickly. So there are a couple of real advantages of a ketch rig over a sloop rig.

In the case of one mast, we look at the number of sails it carries.

Boats with one mast can have either one sail, two sails, or three or more sails.

Most single-masted boats are sloops, which means one mast with two sails (mainsail + headsail). The extra sail increases maneuverability. The mainsail gives you control over the stern, while the headsail gives you control over the bow.

Sailor tip: you steer a boat using its sails, not using its rudder.

The one-masted rigs are:

  • Cat - one mast, one sail
  • Sloop - one mast, two sails
  • Cutter - one mast, three or more sails

The cat is the simplest sail plan and has one mast with one sail. It's easy to handle alone, so it's very popular as a fishing boat. Most (very) small sailboats are catboats, like the Sunfish, and many Laser varieties. But it has a limited sail area and doesn't give you the control and options you have with more sails.

The most common sail plan is the sloop. It has one mast and two sails: the main and headsail. Most sloops have a Bermuda mainsail. It's one of the best racing rigs because it's able to sail very close to the wind (also called 'weatherly'). It's one of the fastest rig types for upwind sailing.

It's a simple sail plan that allows for high performance, and you can sail it short-handed. That's why most sailboats you see today are (Bermuda) sloops.

This rig is also called the Marconi rig, and it was developed by a Dutch Bermudian (or a Bermudian Dutchman) - someone from Holland who lived on Bermuda.

A cutter has three or more sails. Usually, the sail plan looks a lot like the sloop, but it has three headsails instead of one. Naval cutters can carry up to 6 sails.

Cutters have larger sail area, so they are better in light air. The partition of the sail area into more smaller sails give you more control in heavier winds as well. Cutters are considered better for bluewater sailing than sloops (although sloops will do fine also). But the additional sails just give you a bit more to play with.

Two-masted boats can have an extra mast in front or behind the mainmast. If the extra mast is behind (aft of) the mainmast, it's called a mizzenmast . If it's in front of the mainmast, it's called a foremast .

If you look at a boat with two masts and it has a foremast, it's most likely either a schooner or a brig. It's easy to recognize a foremast: the foremast is smaller than the aft mast.

If the aft mast is smaller than the front mast, it is a sail plan with a mizzenmast. That means the extra mast has been placed at the back of the boat. In this case, the front mast isn't the foremast, but the mainmast. Boats with two masts that have a mizzenmast are most likely a yawl or ketch.

The two-masted rigs are:

  • Lugger - two masts (mizzen), with lugsail (a cross between gaff rig and lateen rig) on both masts
  • Yawl - two masts (mizzen), fore-and-aft rigged on both masts. Main mast is much taller than mizzen. Mizzen without a mainsail.
  • Ketch - two masts (mizzen), fore-and-aft rigged on both masts. Main mast with only slightly smaller mizzen. Mizzen has mainsail.
  • Schooner - two masts (foremast), generally gaff rig on both masts. Main mast with only slightly smaller foremast. Sometimes build with three masts, up to seven in the age of sail.
  • Bilander - two masts (foremast). Has a lateen-rigged mainsail and square-rigged sails on the foremast and topsails.
  • Brig - two masts (foremast), partially square-rigged. The main mast carries small lateen-rigged sail.

The yawl has two masts that are fore-and-aft rigged and a mizzenmast. The mizzenmast is much shorter than the mainmast, and it doesn't carry a mainsail. The mizzenmast is located aft of the rudder and is mainly used to increase helm balance.

A ketch has two masts that are fore-and-aft rigged. The extra mast is a mizzenmast. It's nearly as tall as the mainmast and carries a mainsail. Usually, the mainsails of the ketch are gaff-rigged, but there are Bermuda-rigged ketches too. The mizzenmast is located in front of the rudder instead of aft, as on the yawl.

The function of the ketch's mizzen sail is different from that of the yawl. It's actually used to drive the boat forward, and the mizzen sail, together with the headsail, are sufficient to sail the ketch. The mizzen sail on a yawl can't really drive the boat forward.

Schooners have two masts that are fore-and-aft rigged. The extra mast is a foremast which is generally smaller than the mainmast, but it does carry a mainsail. Schooners are also built with a lot more masts, up to seven (not anymore). The schooner's mainsails are generally gaff-rigged.

The schooner is easy to sail but not very fast. It handles easier than a sloop, except for upwind, and it's only because of better technology that sloops are now more popular than the schooner.

The brig has two masts. The foremast is always square-rigged. The mainmast can be square-rigged or is partially square-rigged. Some brigs carry a lateen mainsail on the mainmast, with square-rigged topsails.

Some variations on the brig are:

Brigantine - two masts (foremast), partially square-rigged. Mainmast carries no square-rigged mainsail.

Hermaphrodite brig - also called half brig or schooner brig. Has two masts (foremast), partially square-rigged. Mainmast carries a gaff rig mainsail and topsail, making it half schooner.

Three-masted boats are mostly barques or schooners. Sometimes sail plans with two masts are used with more masts.

The three-masted rigs are:

  • Barque - three masts, fore, and mainmast are square-rigged, the mizzenmast is usually gaff-rigged. All masts carry mainsail.
  • Barquentine - three masts, foremast is square-rigged, the main and mizzenmast are fore-and-aft rigged. Also called the schooner barque.
  • Polacca - three masts, foremast is square-rigged, the main and mizzenmast are lateen-rigged.
  • Xebec - three masts, all masts are lateen-rigged.

A barque has three or four masts. The fore and mainmast are square-rigged, and the mizzen fore-and-aft, usually gaff-rigged. Carries a mainsail on each mast, but the mainsail shape differs per mast (square or gaff). Barques were built with up to five masts. Four-masted barques were quite common.

Barques were a good alternative to full-rigged ships because they require a lot fewer sailors. But they were also slower. Very popular rig for ocean crossings, so a great rig for merchants who travel long distances and don't want 30 - 50 sailors to run their ship.

Barquentine

The barquentine usually has three masts. The foremast is square-rigged and the main and mizzenmast fore-and-aft. The rear masts are usually gaff-rigged.

Faster than a barque or a schooner, but the performance is worse than both.

The polacca or polacre rig has three masts with a square-rigged foremast. The main and mizzenmast are lateen-rigged. Beautiful boat to see. Polacca literally means 'Polish' (it's Italian). It was a popular rig type in the Mediterranean in the 17th century. It looks like the xebec, which has three lateen-rigged masts.

Fun fact: polaccas were used by a Dutch sailor-turned-Turkish-pirate (called Murat Reis).

The xebec is a Mediterranean trading ship with three masts. All masts are lateen-rigged. I couldn't find any surviving xebecs, only models and paintings. So I guess this rig is outdated a long time.

A boat with three or more masts that all carry square-rigged sails is called a ship, a tall ship, or a full-rigged ship. So it's at this point that we start calling boats 'ships'. It has nothing to do with size but with the type of rigging.

More sails mean less stress on all of them. These ships use a lot of sails to distribute the forces, which reduces the stress on the rigging and the masts. Square sails mean double the sail area in comparison to triangular sails.

They are quite fast for their size, and they could outrun most sloops and schooners (schooners were relatively a lot heavier). The reason is that tall ships could be a lot longer than sloops, giving them a lot of extra hull speed. Sloops couldn't be as large because there weren't strong enough materials available. Try making a single triangular sail with a sail area of over 500 sq. ft. from linen.

So a lot of smaller sails made sense. You could have a large ship with a good maximum hull speed, without your sails ripping apart with every gust of wind.

But you need A LOT of sailors to sail a tall ship: about 30 sailors in total to ie. reef down sails and operate the ship. That's really a lot.

Tall ships are used nowadays for racing, with the popular tall ship races traveling the world. Every four years I go and check them out when they are at Harlingen (which is very close to where I live).

What is the difference between a schooner and a sloop? A schooner has two masts, whereas the sloop only has one. The schooner carries more sails, with a mainsail on both masts. Also, sloops are usually Bermuda-rigged, whereas schooners are usually gaff-rigged. Most schooners also carry one or two additional headsails, in contrast to the single jib of the sloop.

What do you call a two-masted sailboat? A two-masted sailboat is most likely a yawl, ketch, schooner, or brig. To determine which one it is you have to locate the mainmast (the tallest). At the rear: schooner or brig. In front: yawl or ketch. Brigs have a square-rigged foremast, schooners don't. Ketches carry a mainsail on the rear mast; yawls don't.

What is a sloop rig? A sloop rig is a sailboat with one mast and two sails: a mainsail and headsail. It's a simple sail plan that handles well and offers good upwind performance. The sloop rig can be sailed shorthanded and is able to sail very close to the wind, making it very popular. Most recreational sailboats use a sloop rig.

What is the difference between a ketch and a yawl? The most important difference between a ketch and a yawl are the position and height of the mizzenmast. The mizzenmast on a yawl is located aft of the rudder, is shorter than the mainmast and doesn't carry a mainsail. On a ketch, it's nearly as long as the mainmast and carries a mainsail.

There are SO many errors on this site it really should be taken down.

First major mistake is to say you are no longer afraid of the sea.

One that truly gets up my nose is the term ‘fully’ rigged ship. It’s a FULL rigged ship!! Your mast names are the wrong way round and just because there may be 3 it doesn’t automatically mean the one in the middle is the main.

I could go on and totally destroy your over inflated but fragile ego but I won’t. All I will say is go learn a lot more before posting.

Shawn, I have a painting of a Spanish vessel, two masted, with. Lateen sails on both masts and a jib. The mainsail is ahead of the main mast (fore) and the other is aft of the mizzen mast. Would this be what you call lugger rig? I have not seen a similar picture. Thanks, Alec.

Your description of a cutter is lacking, and your illustrations of “cutters” are actually cutter-rigged sloops. On a true cutter, the mast is moved further aft (with more than 40% of the ship forward of the mast). A sloop uses tension in the backstay to tension the luff of the foresail. The cutter can’t do this.

Also, a bermuda-rigged ketch will have a line running from the top of the mainmast to the top of the mizzenmast.

I’m starting to repair a model sailboat used in the lake I have three masts that have long been broken off and the sails need replacement. So my question is there a special relationship between the three masts I do have reminents of where the masts should go. they all broke off the boat along with the sails I can figure out where they go because of the old glue marks but it makes no sense. or does it really matter on a model thank you mickey

Thank you. Cleared up quite a few things for me. For example, I was familiar with the names “Xebecs” and “Polaccas” from recent reading about the Barbary War. I had gathered that the two Barbary types were better suited to sailing in the Med, but perhaps they were less able to be adaptable to military uses,(but one might assume that would be ok if one plans to board and fight, as opposed to fight a running gun duel). Specifically, the strangely one sided August 1, 1801 battle between the USS Enterprise under Lt. John Sterett and the Polacca cruiser Tripoli under Admiral Rais Mahomet Rous. On paper both ships seemed nearly equal in size, guns and crew, but pictures of the battle are confusing. While the Enterprise is usually rendered as the familiar schooner, the polacca Tripoli has been pictured in radically different ways. Thus the Wikipedia picture by Hoff in 1878 used to illustrate the Battle shows a Brig design for Tripoli, indicating 77 years later, polaccas were no longer common.

Also appreciate the insight of the handling idiosyncrasies “hand” (staff) requirements to manage a vessel for one that has not been on the water much. I long to spend significant time afloat, but have concern about the ability to handle a vessel due to advancing age. Your discussion made no mention of the galleon, a vessel with either square-rigged Fore and Main masts and a shorter lateen-rigged Mizzen, or, on larger galleons, square-rigged Fore and Main masts, with a lateen-rigged Mizzen and a lateen-rigged Bonaventure mast, both shorter than either the Fore or Main masts. Also, it was not uncommon for a galleon to hoist a square-rigged bowsprit topsail in addition to the usual square-rigged spritsail.

Small Boat Shapes, an Overview of Types and Terms

When I was getting started in boatbuilding, I struggled to understand how different small-boat shapes might perform and their level of difficulty in construction. I remember feeling nearly overwhelmed by a sea of foreign words and unknown concepts. It would have been nice to have had an illustrated guide to basic small-boat shapes: hulls, bows, sterns, and some terminology that defines form. So, if you are new to boatbuilding, or if you feel unclear on some of these basic concepts, this guide is for you.

From the moment man discovered that he could traverse a river on a floating log, boat shapes have continued to evolve. Early boats took on a wide variety of forms, utilizing any available material that could be made to float. Among these craft were rafts made from inflated animal skins, bamboo, papyrus reeds, and even terra cotta pots. Later came dugout canoes, skin, wood, and bone kayaks first used by Eskimo hunters, and basket-shaped coracles (also skin boats) built in Ireland and Wales.

While boat and ship building became refined over the centuries, early designers and builders still took a Darwinian approach: If a new ship returned from her maiden voyage, she might be copied and built again. If she failed to return, well, then she might not be reproduced.

We still haven’t conquered the sea, and I doubt that we ever will. However, we do have more tools at our disposal to help us build boats that are safer to use and perform better. Hours spent on construction represent only a fraction of time in the life of a small wooden boat. It isn’t difficult to grasp the utility of basic small-boat shapes, and it will be helpful to know something about them when choosing a boatbuilding project.

Please remember that this is an article about small-boat shapes, not small-boat design. While some overlapping concepts are mentioned here, we will not cover even the rudiments of what it takes to create a lines drawing. The Origins of Hull Shapes

Hull shapes (in section) are made up of some combination of three basic forms. These are: flat-bottomed, V-bottomed, and round-bottomed.

Flat-bottomed Form

Strengths: The flat-bottomed boat’s principal asset is that it is easy to build. Therefore it is generally inexpensive for its size. It also has a lot of interior volume and can have good initial stability (and not feel tender, that is, tippy). The flat bottom shape is most often used for small rowboats, but many larger craft have also successfully used this most basic of forms. This skiff is based on a flat-bottomed form. The form is augmented by rocker, canted topsides, and a bit of flare in the forward section.

Weaknesses: The flat-bottomed boat has some serious drawbacks, too. Its large, flat panels are hard to support structurally; when heeled too much, it can easily fill and capsize; and the flat bottom pounds even at moderate speeds in waves. Because of these drawbacks, the flat-bottomed boat shape is generally not considered as sea-worthy as the other basic shapes.

V-bottomed Form

Strengths: V-bottomed boats, when properly shaped, can be inherently stronger than a boat with a flat-panel bottom and will slice through the water with much less pounding. Because of this, they are considered more seaworthy than equivalent-sized flat-bottomed boats. Boats and yachts of all sizes have been designed and built with V-bottoms. Virtually all high-speed power craft built today employ some type of V-bottomed shape.

Weaknesses: In smooth water, V-bottomed boats require more power for the higher speed ranges than flat-bottomed boats do. Also, the V-shape offers greater difficulty in construction. Because of this, V-bottomed boats tend to be more expensive than the flat-bottomed type. Also, the V-bottomed boat may be less roomy, and harder to clean and paint than a similarly sized flattie.

Round-bottomed Form

Strengths: The curved shape of a round bottom is intrinsically strong and allows the boat an easier motion than its V-bottomed and flat-bottomed cousins. This shape is generally used for higher-displacement boats (displacement boats do not plane) that are designed to go at moderate speeds through the water rather than over it like the higher-speed V-bottoms can.

Weaknesses: Round-bottomed boats are the hardest to construct and are, by far, the most expensive to build. Virtually all hulls borrow from these pure forms. Let’s look at some of the many elements of small-boat hull shapes and the characteristics that distinguish one from the other.

This simple-to-construct, flat-bottomed hull type tends to be a slow mover that will pound in waves, but it is very stable in calm waters on a breezeless day.

While both the flat-bottomed skiff (see illustration on previous page) and the dory (above) are somewhat more difficult to construct than the scow, their sweeping bottom shapes and canted sides enable them to ride the waves more easily than their slab-sided counterpart. A dory has some similarities to a skiff. However, it has a narrower bottom and transom, employs some different construction techniques, and is made for use in heavier seas. A dory’s flaring sides make it increasingly stable the more it is tipped, so while you might be alarmed at this boat’s initial nervousness, you may find yourself able to stand on its rail without water coming aboard.

Arc-bottomed Centerboard Sailboat

Of the flat-bottomed hull configurations presented here, the arc bottom is the most difficult to construct. It is also the most sea-friendly and comfortable of these flat-bottomed types.

V-bottomed Motorboat

The deadrise angle (see page 6) of the V-shaped bottom allows this hull shape to move forward through waves more easily than a flat-bottomed type, while still providing good stability. Many planing boats, such as runabouts, combine the deep V-bottom in the forward area of the boat, while unrolling the shape to a flatter deadrise angle toward the stern (as illustrated). This combination gives a boat the dual benefits of speed in waves and stability.

Multichined Kayak

Up to this point, we have not discussed chines. Chines are the intersections of the bottom and sides. All of the boats we have discussed so far are single-chined, meaning that they have only one hard turn, or corner, where the bottom meets the sides. The bottom of a multichined boat is made up of a number of narrower panels. Depending on the design, the multichined shape, as in the kayak shown above, can produce a hull whose performance approaches that of a round- bottomed boat.

Round-bottomed Canoe

Round hull shapes are more difficult to build than either flat-bottomed or V-shaped hulls. Often, flat-bottomed or V-shaped hulls can be built on their own permanent frames, or their frames are easily sawn and fitted. A much more complex mold system must be set up before a round-bottomed hull can be built. For a well-constructed round-bottomed boat, the builder must have a higher level of woodworking skill and a good understanding of wood characteristics. Yet round-bottomed boats are the usual preference of people who spend a lot of time on the water. Why? Partly because this shape responds to the undulations of the water more gracefully than any other type of small boat. Also, they tend to be more comfortable and many people prefer their looks.

Round-bottomed Keel Sailboat

Adding a keel with built-in ballast to a round-bottomed boat adds complexity to the construction process. Also, if you look at the turn of the bilge (see cover illustration), you’ll notice that some of the planking has been hollowed out (“backed out”) in order to follow the round shape of the hull. Still, it’s easy to see that this shape would make a comfortable and stable boat, even in rolling seas. Whoever came up with the phrase, “Go with the flow,” might have sailed a round-bottomed sailboat. Its curved shape allows water to easily roll along its surface while its ballast keel acts as a pendulum and (usually) prevents the boat from tipping over while under sail.

Reverse-curved Sailboat

This type of hull shape represents the toughest building challenge of all the boat shapes presented here. Notice the reverse (S) curves of the hull. The backbone and deadwood (keel area) and the planking, framing, and fitting out (adding interior elements) all require a higher degree of skill and workmanship. Add to that the fact that a sail, through its rigging, will be pulling on the structure over its lifespan. Yet, of all the shapes presented here, this one may be the most seakindly. The great weight of the ballast keel combined with the compound and complex curves of her hull shape allow the boat to take better advantage of breezes in both calm waters and heavier seas.

Small-Craft Stability

Naval architect C.W. Paine defined small-craft stability as “The propensity of the vessel to remain upright.” Two major types of stability apply to small boats: initial stability (how tender or not-tender a boat feels), and ultimate stability (the ability of a boat to return upright after being turned over). Because most small boats will remain inverted when turned over, initial stability is of primary interest to their users. On small boats, waterline beam (or the width of a boat at its LWL; see opening illustrations) is the principal factor in determining initial stability. A small increase in waterline beam can greatly increase initial stability. The shape of the sections also plays a part. For example, sections with good flare regain stability quickly when they are tipped, while slab or vertical sided boats do not.

Other Characteristics That Affect Boat Shape

Sheer is easily seen in the side view of a boat. The sheerline is the topmost line of the planking, where the planking meets the deck (or the rails if the boat has no deck). It is the dominant line (of many) that determines the look of a boat.

Freeboard is the distance or height of the sides of the boat from the waterline to the sheer or deck line. Too little freeboard leads to easy entrance of water when the boat is heeled. Too much freeboard causes excess windage (as a wall to the wind) and weight of construction. It detracts from a boat’s appearance, too.

Topsides, sometimes confused with freeboard, is the surface area of the hull from the water-line to the sheer, or rail (the part that you see). Freeboard is always a distance; topsides is an area.

Rocker is the amount of fore-and-aft curvature to a boat’s underbody. The amount of rocker will help to determine how easily a boat will make turns. Too little rocker will render a boat that never wants to turn without a fight. Too much, and it will yaw (twist back and forth) and resist running on a straight course.

Deadrise angle describes the upwardness of the bottom (in section) from horizontal. On a flat-bottomed scow, skiff, or dory, deadrise angle is zero. On a V-bottomed powerboat, the deadrise angle may be as much as 20–25°, and even more on an extreme hull shape.

Most pontoon boats are between 15 and 30 feet long. They have a flat profile with aluminum tubes spread around the boat for added support. 

The flat profile allows for plenty of passengers and equipment to be stored on board, however pontoons are not suited for long distances. This is a casual cruiser or fishing boat, not an intracoastal voyager.

There are two main types of inflatable boats, the RIB kind and the SIB kind. RIB stands for rigid inflatable boats. These types of boats have a rigid flooring or hull with an inflatable component. SIB stands for soft inflatable boat. These types of boats are soft all the way through.

Both the RIB and SIB have their advantages and disadvantages. The RIB offers added structural integrity, but due to its rigid hull, cannot be easily stored. The SIB lacks the structural integrity of the RIB, but its completely soft body allows it to be easily stored anywhere.

Inflatable boats typically range in size from 6 feet to 22 feet and have a variety of uses. They work great as lifeboats aboard a larger vessel, but can also be great for recreational use.

Jet Boats

Those looking for a simple but reliable boat for recreational use, cruising, or fishing, will find exactly what they’re looking for with a jon boat. This kind of boat is characterized by its flat bottom, affordable price, bench seats, and motor.

Jon boats are most commonly used as cruisers and fishing boats. Their relatively small and simple construction makes them easy to transport, making them perfect for a quick weekend trip. 

Additionally, the light and simple construction of the Jon boat makes it perfect for fishing in shallow waters, where other boats might have trouble. The simple construction also means that they require very little maintenance, meaning you can spend more time on the water.

Skiffs

Skiffs are one of the more ambiguous boat types in this list. Skiffs are characterized by their small, simple, and open design, but can be used to categorize many other kinds of boats. Skiffs are made up of a simple hull, an outboard engine, and some seats.

Skiffs are ideal for recreational use, fishing, and cruising short distances. The simplicity of a skiff is one of its main draws. With a skiff you won’t have to worry about maintenance or have to worry about mastering many moving parts.

Their compact size also makes them easy to transport and easy to maneuver in the water. However, their small size also means that less people can be aboard at a time. Additionally, they have no natural protection from the elements, so you will have to find a safe space for storage.

If you’re looking for a simple boat ideal for recreational use at a moderate price, then a skiff might be for you.

Small boats are the best option out there for beginners. Or for seasoned boaters who just don’t want to need a big boat. But understanding what a small boat even is may be harder than you think. Likewise, learning what you need on your small boat can be a challenge.

Under some definitions, a small boat is anything under 64 feet. That’s because anything bigger than that is subject to different marine rules. But 64 feet is certainly far too big for many people. Compare that to a canoe which may be 17 feet in length. Or a pontoon boat which could be 18 feet up to 35 feet.

With so many small boats out there, you need to know what each type of boat has to offer. This also depends on what boating activities you need it for. Will this be a fishing boat? Something for water sports. A pleasure vessel? Are deck boats or bow riders better?

Let’s take a look at some small boat types. Find out what your options are. Go over the boat buying process. And also cover what you need to have on your small boat regardless of what it’s for.

What Types of Small Boats Are There?

When you’re in the market for a small boat, you have a lot of options. Your needs and budget will dictate what type is best for you. Keep in mind, boating safety applies no matter what type of boat you have.

Canoes and Kayaks

Canoes and kayaks are some of the oldest boats in the world. These type of boat can literally be as simple as a hollowed-out log. Canoes may date back as far as 8,200 BC. The basic design and operation has changed little in all that time. As simple as they look, you need experience to use them well.

A kayak is not too dissimilar from a canoe. It’s designed for a single person to use, however. Both a canoe and kayak rely on oars to move through the water. Either can be used for leisure boating or even fishing. Canoes tend to make better fishing boats.

Ski boats are ideal for water sports. In fact, the name ski boat is because they were designed for water skiing. You can water ski with other kinds of boats. Ski boats are designed to make water skiing easier. They can accelerate quickly but minimize wake for the skier.

Dinghies are typically some of the smallest boats on the water. It would be rare to see anything that qualifies as a dinghy over 10 feet. That said, you can still get a dinghy powered by a sail or a motor.

Aluminum fishing boats are a popular choice. They are lightweight and relatively inexpensive compared to some vessels. They offer lots of deck space and amenities to make your fishing trip easier. These can easily be used for a fun trip out on the water as well.

Older fishing boats may be very basic. Sometimes little more than a large canoe. Modern fishing boats have many amenities. There is room for storage, gear, GPS , and much more.

Jet boats are designed for speed. When they first appeared they were small and little more than novelty items. Something for people who wanted an adrenaline rush. These days there are more diverse jet boats . They are larger and can accommodate more people. 21-foot and 24-foot jet boat runabouts are very popular.

Jet boats have smaller profiles than similar stern drive models. They also weigh less. Combined with agility, these are just more fun for some boaters. Navigation along most waterways is fast and easy in a jet boat.

Cabin Cruiser

There may be accommodations for sleeping or cooking. Cabin cruisers can range from around 25 feet up to 45 feet.

A cabin cruiser is actually a style of vessel. A yacht is a classification. So technically a vessel can be a yacht and a cabin cruiser. But in layman’s terms, a cabin cruiser is small.

These boats are best suited for family outings. They have more space and more amenities.

Boating Safety on a Small Boat

The smaller the boat the more careful you need to be when moving around. A large yacht is much more well balanced than a skiff. If you’re trying to reel in a fish, you can unbalance the boat.

Small boats need to be more cautious on rough waters and in storms. While a larger boat may handle some chop, it could capsize a smaller vessel. If you know the weather is bad, you should avoid heading out in a small boat.

Gear storage can be a problem on smaller boats. And that’s not just because you have less gear with you. You will have less room to safely store things. Clutter on a boat can be dangerous. Anything on the deck of your small boat could be a tripping risk.

Some small boats make use of their bow space for storage, but not all. Always pack safely and appropriately.

Personal safety is a bigger concern on small boats. This is especially true in kayaks, canoes, dinghies and so on. If you are alone on your small boat, you are at greater risk. Without someone else to help you, emergencies are your responsibility. This means you need to have a life jacket at all times. And you need to minimize risk, just in case.

What You Need on Your Small Boat

If you have a big 79 foot yacht, you have a lot of room. You’ll be able to safely and easily pack all kinds of gear. If you’re in a 12 foot canoe, things are different. You need to know what is essential in terms of gear for your type of boat.

When you are in a small boat, especially alone, there are some items you need to ensure you have. Packing a kit for any outing on the water is a good idea. Have these essentials at the ready.

  • A personal flotation device. A life jacket is your best bet on a small vessel. Every person on board should always have a PFD. On a small craft you should make sure you are wearing it at all times. When you’re alone, you may not have time to react in a disaster.
  • A whistle. Larger boats use flags and lights as signals, as well as sounds. You don’t have the room for all that on a small boat. Have a maritime whistle handy. One that works in water. That way, in an emergency, you can alert any others in the water or on shore that you need aid.
  • A flashlight. This can be very helpful if the water turns bad. Or if you get stuck on the water later than you intended. An LED flashlight has a bright beam and uses little battery power. You can signal to other boaters or the shore. The SOS signal is easy to perform with a flashlight.
  • Oars. It’s good to have a pair of oars handy on a small vessel. This is true even if you have sails or an outboard. If there’s no wind for sails or power in the motor, oars always work. You should be able to secure them with oar locks.
  • A bailing bucket. If you start taking on water, you’ll need to bail as you try to make your way to shore. The smaller the boat the faster it will sink. A good bailing bucket can give you precious minutes. Some buckets are foldable to take up little room when not needed.
  • A blanket. This is always a good idea since temperatures can shift rapidly on the water. If your clothes get wet, a dry blanket can help retain body heat.
  • Scissors to cut bandages, tape, or clothing if need be
  • Elastic bandages for wounds
  • Triangle bandages for arm or shoulder injuries
  • Adhesive bandages for smaller cuts and wounds
  • Butterfly bandages for more serious cuts
  • Adhesive pads to cover wounds
  • Rolled gauze to wrap wounds and adhesive pads
  • Safety pins to secure bandages
  • Fabric tape to hold bandages
  • Saline solution to flush wounds
  • Gloves to prevent contact with open wounds
  • A splint to immobilize breaks
  • Foil blanket for keep injured passengers warm
  • Alcohol wipes for cleaning hands and wounds
  • Common medications like Tylenol or Ibuprofen as well as Dramamine.
  • Rope. It’s good to have at least two lengths of rope on your boat. This allows you to tie up your boat or offer help if someone goes overboard.
  • Something shiny. A small makeup mirror or other highly reflective surface. In bright sunlight, this is ideal for signaling.
  • Rain ponchos or, in a pinch, garbage bags. These can keep you dry and work as makeshift tents in a storm.
  • An emergency contact. Always make sure someone knows that you are out on a boat. They should know where you are going and where you left from. Also what time you are expected to return. This is all part of a basic float plan. In the event of an emergency, this information can be vital. Rescuers will track you down much faster if they know where to look.

Things to Remember

The rules of the road are something any boater in a small boat needs to remember. Always give larger boats a wide berth. Do your best to be seen and heard in an emergency. Make sure you’re being as safe as you can. Boats are meant to be relaxing and fun. If it’s too stressful, then something is wrong.

You can do almost as much in a small boat as you can in a larger boat. You just need to prepare yourself a little differently. Stay safe and have fun.
