Guide to Nice

The cosmopolitan capital of the Côte d’Azur

Curved beautifully around the Bay of Angels, the cosmopolitan capital of the Côte d’Azur, Nice, is a city of contrasts. Gleaming with sophistication, it strikes an engaging balance between historic Provençal grace, port-town exotica and well-dressed urban decadence in a delicious concoction of high culture.

Famous for its enchanting Belle Époque heritage and its idyllic setting on the French Riviera  surrounded by the foothills of the Alpes Maritimes, makes Nice a prime luxury yacht charter destination. The multicultural population, Mediterranean lifestyle, artistic centres and charming eccentricities create a hedonistic yet earthy atmosphere.

Italian influences abound throughout this iconic metropolis, no more so than in the captivating old town of Vieux Nice. The unassuming façade of Eglise de Jésus or Palais Lascaris are gateways into forgotten worlds whilst the sudden surprise of the Cáthedrale de Saint Réparate, opening up among the tiny streets, is one of the most beautiful sights to behold in the South of France. Spend a morning searching the alluring pastel-hued, sun bleached arcades through the winding alleyways to uncover antique treasures, vintage wines and local delicacies.

The sun-drenched and eternally fashionable Promenade des Anglais is a hub of activity amongst turn-of-the-century mansions that lord over the unceasing procession of rollerbladers, fashionistas and beachgoers. As the pink and orange light of dusk sets over the Riviera, the long strip of polished pebbles that form the bay comes alive with chic bars and restaurants to the backdrop of the dark, glittering sea.

Take a helicopter up to the mountains to the stunning Alpine village of Sospel. Peaceful and quaint, the surrounding area offers exhilarating opportunities to hike, horse-ride, bike and fish amongst the French countryside. The high point of the year falls in mid-February, when the city hosts one of the most spectacular Carnival celebrations in France.

If you are interested in discovering this part of the French Riviera from the comfort of a superyacht, then begin by comparing all of the crewed yachts for charter in the South of France  to get any idea of those which can be used for private cruising.

Explore Nice, France, and French Riviera from your Yacht

Nice, France is a beguiling mix of culture, class, history, food, and luxury sailing.

Founded in 5BC by the Greeks, Nicea, or Nice (as it’s now known) has been a hotspot for tourism for generations. The Greeks, Italians, French, and English have all vacationed in the city at one point and have influenced everything from art to architecture and food. The year-round sunshine and the stunning Mediterranean waters are the biggest reasons people worldwide travel down to rent a boat Nice.

Dubbed by many as the unofficial capital of the French Rivera, Nice offers some of the best seaside resorts, foods, restaurants, architecture, and Marinas in France. The city has a little bit of everything for all sorts of travelers.

History and architecture buffs will delight in Castle hill, the various contemporary museums, and historical buildings. Casual vacationers will enjoy the warm rocky beaches of the Mediterranean sea, the foods, and the many tours that show the most exciting sports in the city. Sailors will fall in love with the many ports and Marinas where you’ll find a French Riviera yacht charter that’ll suit you perfectly.

Exploring the French Riviera from Nice

There’s no shortage of Ports and Marinas where you can rent a boat Nice France. Despite having no sandy beaches, the pleasure boating scene in Nice is in full swing.

Port of Nice is the biggest Port in the city and is home to Mega Yachts, Sailboats, and every vessel in between. It should be your first destination if you want to rent a yacht in Nice, France .

Port Saint Jean Cap Ferrat Marina is a great second choice. St-Jean Cap Ferrat is an exclusive commune belonging to some of the wealthiest men and women in Riviera. And their Marina provides the best amenities and services for sailors and vessel owners. You’ll struggle to find a better yacht charter in France.

Port de Beaulieu Marina, Beaulieu-Sur-Mer is some ways from Nice, but if you’re patient enough to make the trip or are in the area, you’ll find no better location to rent a boat Nice France. The town of Beaulieu-Sur-Mer boasts of two of the largest Marinas on the Riviera, and yacht hire Nice, and Sailboat charters in Nice, France, are plentiful.

Port la Darse Marina, Villefranche-Sur-Mer is off the beaten path, eastward of Nice. It’s a small-capacity Marinas that accept Yachts 34 m tall, Super Yachts, and even sailboats. It’s another stellar place to rent a boat Nice.

Marina Baie Des Anges, Port des Fourmis, and Port Saint Laurent du Var Marina are excellent alternatives located in Nice or the villages around it. You can rent a boat and sail up and down the Riviera.

City Attractions to Visit When Sailing Nice, France

Nice is the fifth-largest city in France, and there are no shortages of exciting activities to do. For sailors, most of the excitement you’ll find in the city will be by the private yacht clubs, French Riviera yacht charters, and guided tours.

For sight-seers and food lovers, Nice is magical. Old Town is the heart of the city and has some of the cheapest accommodations, the best restaurants and pastries, flower markets, and plenty of the most fascinating monuments in the city.

Hike Castle Hill to get the best view in the city and walk the Promenade des Anglais for a lovely view of the Mediterranean every morning Art lovers will delight in the Chegal Museum, the contemporary art museum, and other private and public Museums located in the city.

If you’re Nice for the architecture and history, you should visit Palais Lascaris, Garden of the Cimiiez Monastery, and St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral. They cost next to nothing to visit and tell the true story of the city.

Weather in Nice, France

Like most cities in France, the weather in Nice changes a lot over the course of the year. During the winter months, temperatures can reach as slow as 43 degrees in December and January, and by the height of August, they can reach as high as 82 degrees Fahrenheit.

You’ll find similar weather among most cities along the Riviera, meaning finding yacht charters in Antibes or a Cannes yacht charter will just be as complicated as sailing Nice France. If you can, avoid the city entirely in August. Most of France vacations during that month, and the price of accommodation, food, and just about everything skyrockets as the french make a mass exodus to the Riviera.

However, Nice never sees snow or lots of rain, and that means, despite the huge temperature difference, you can visit the city year-round with very few issues.

Preparing for the Nice Sailing Trip

Despite being on the Riviera, Nice is actually more accessible by air. Ferry rides and train rides take forever and are almost as expensive as booking a local plane ride, and if you’re traveling down from North America, you’ll be coming by plane already.

Nice, France is a charming place, but like visiting any foreign country, it can be a nightmare if you don’t prepare ahead for it. Book your Airbnb, sailboat charters in Nice, France, or yacht charters Nice ahead of time to have the smoothest experience.

You can also look up specific locations you’d like to visit and plan out an Itinerary. Most people that visit Nice don’t stop at the city, but also visit the surrounding towns, villages, and the other cities on the Riviera for an authentic and more complete experience.

Nice—the crown jewel of the French Riviera—is a sun-kissed canvas of terracotta rooftops, complemented by the well-known crescent-shaped bay and sparkling waters. Take your time along the iconic Promenade des Anglais, a pedestrian path lined with palm trees, where rollerbladers glide by, and street performers captivate crowds. Drift into the not-to-be-missed Old Town, a maze of architectural marvels from centuries gone by. Revel in the Cours Saleya, a flower market bursting with colour and the fresh scent of produce. For art enthusiasts, world-renowned museums like the Musée Matisse showcase masterpieces, while history buffs can wander the ruins of the Roman city of Cemenelum. Cultural capital of the Côte d'Azur

The Queen of the Riviera

Nice is nicknamed the Queen of the Riviera. The biggest and best city in the South of France is bathed in sun. Bright light attracted artistic brilliance. Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall captured boulevards, boats and beautiful buildings. See them all by eBike, Segway or open-top car. The bottom line? Nice has more museums than any French city outside Paris. All of which are best seen by private guide.

Your Guide to Nice

The bon vivant capital of france.

Nice was built on inestimable wealth. Italian counts, German princes and American moguls built rococo palazzi, Moorish castles and Normandy chateaux. Tsar Nicholas II sailed into Nice yacht harbour to open the largest Russian Cathedral in Western Europe. A direct train to Moscow (via the Italian Riviera and Austrain Alps) still runs today. Queen Victoria enjoyed Nice’s joie de vivre. Her son, Prince Bertie, preferred the casinos of Monte Carlo - a 15-minute RIB ride away.

Art & Sunshine

Brits built the Promenade des Anglais. Imagine a dawn-to-dusk seaside spectacular: beach bars, watermelon vendors, jugglers, lovers, bathers and couples dancing tango in the night. The waterside boulevard is action central. Join the fun on rollerblades, longboards, tandem trikes and hoverboards. Or head up to the Tour de France cycling route via racing bike. Your own Pinarello bike can be arranged with one call to your Y.CO Charter Specialist.

Eat. Shop. Enjoy.

Nice stops for lunch. And carries on eating until dinner. The city that gave the world salade Niçoise is a Michelin-starred melting pot. Try Le Negresco, where Dali ate while The Beatles drank. Or join top cooks at Libération Market for black truffles, green olives and Bouzigues oysters. Your yacht chef will be among the throng.

Nice, france.

Set between the beautiful Baie des Anges and the Alps, the sunny capital of la Côte d’Azur has long been admired for its beauty and sophistication. One of France’s oldest cities, Nice blends its urban verve with plenty of seaside charm, a fantastic local food scene and a heritage that’s steeped in pretty Italianate influences. In the narrow streets of Vieille Ville you’ll find charming piazzettas, cozy cafés, traditional stores and a famous flower and grocery market. Take a stroll in the Place Massena, the city’s impressive 19th century main square, or head to the iconic Promenade des Anglais, which showcases Belle Epoque grandeur alongside its lively beach scene. NICE – Top Yacht charter Destination

Luxury yachts and Nice belong together like summer and sun. With a port that can accommodate yachts of up to 200 metres and a vibrant town centre just minutes from the quay, Nice has long been considered the French Riviera’s top yachting destination.

Just picture this: your yacht glides into Port Limpia and moors at the marina, the pastel-coloured buildings glowing in the afternoon light. You are surrounded by crystalline water and the air is balmy, stirred by a gentle breeze. You step onto the quay and are soon strolling along Promenade des Anglais, one of the most picturesque streets in the world. And you count yourself lucky for having chosen a yachting vacation, which makes accessing these pockets of beauty so easy.

nice – Things to Do

Sophisticated Nice knows how to cater for those who enjoy life’s finer things. Chic women sashay in high heels, convertibles zip through the streets, boutiques sell one-off designs and restaurants serve sublime meals – all against a backdrop of sparkling sea and a marina packed with gleaming yachts.

Go for a round of golf at one of the city’s numerous golf clubs – the Golf Country Club de Nice is a good choice. If you fancy showing off your equestrian skills, try horseback riding at one of the many centres in and around the city, including the stylish Club Hippique de Nice.

You can’t visit Nice without indulging in a spot of shopping. Avenue Jean Medecin has dozens of boutiques selling designer clothes and accessories, while Galeries Lafayette will fulfil all your shopping desires.

NICE – The Gourmet Experience

Like other French destinations, Nice offers top haute cuisine experiences. The Michelin-starred Le Chantecler in Hotel Negresco features Provence-style gourmet dining prepared by big-name international chefs, served in a restaurant whose décor is as lavish and rich as the food.

Other excellent options are the Olive et Artichaut, with its fine meats and delicious desserts; the Michelin-starred Aphrodite, which specialises in molecular cuisine; La P’tite Cocotte, renowned for its foie gras with date fruit sauce; La Route du Miam, with its signature duck dish; and Le Sejour Café, a tiny, elegant treasure.

Nice Yacht Charter, French Riviera

Nice is a colourful cosmopolitan destination that has attracted artists and aristocrats throughout the centuries, and when you stand upon Castle Hill to see the breath-taking blue waters that gave the Cote d'Azur its name, you'll know why it's still such a favourite with the luxury yachting crowd.

Walk through the Medieval Quarter and connect with a past gone but not forgotten, then discover the legacy of previous generations of tourists in the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, where the golden icon wall was prayed to by Russian's aristocrats while holidaying in the sunshine. The British too left their mark, and the seafront walkway is named 'Promenade des Anglais', which leads to the castle and is lined with luxury shopping opportunities and first-class eateries.

Any lover of Impressionism should make time to visit Musée Matisse, which has a comprehensive exhibition spanning the lifetime of the artist.

On your French Riviera yacht charter you should visit the lovely old port of Nice, at the eastern end of the Promenade des Anglais. Nice is one of the more famous French cities, particularly for the arts, culture and tourism. The Nice airport is very close to the center of town and Nice’s port, and being the second largest airport in France, after Paris, it is the main airport for the French Riviera yacht charter area.

The port is surrounded by superb Genoese-style old pink and yellow ochre buildings. The centre of the quartier des Antiquaires (Antique Dealers district) is only a short walk from the famous flower and Provencal markets and the street cafés of The Cours Saleya and the beaches of the Baie des Anges. Nice is home to many culinary specialties such as Niçois, Provençal and international, which can be savored in the multitude of sea side restaurants within easy access of your charter yacht.

As with most of the Mediterranean , and all the French Riviera, the Nice yacht charter holiday season generally runs from April to the end of October. The summer season in July and August is the hottest and tends to have the lightest winds but also the largest crowds. This is also the high season as far as yacht charter goes. Other good times to charter your yacht is generally on either of the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October), each side of the main summer season, as the temperatures are still comfortable, and the onshore tourists have yet to arrive in their largest numbers.

As one of the most famous yacht charter grounds in the Mediterranean, Nice and the French Riviera have all types of yacht charter available including motor, sailing yacht charter, skippered, crewed yachts, catamaran, power boat, sailboat, luxury yachts and off-course the ever increasing super yacht charter. The emphasis in Nice is on larger luxury power and sailing yacht charters, although Nice, and the French Riviera, is also an excellent area for the smaller yacht to explore.

Nice Yacht Charters

Nice is a popular yacht charter destination in the French Riviera. Despite the fact that today, Nice is the second most popular destination in France – next to Paris, of course – it wasn’t until the late 18th-century that its beauty started attracting A-list appeal.

Boasting an ideal Mediterranean climate all year round, Nice first gained traction as a winter destination for English aristocrats; and once its beauty was confirmed, later became a muse for Western artists most talented painters: like Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, Arman, and Niki de Saint Phalle, to name a few.

The meeting point of old-world opulence, sunny shores, art enthusiasts, delicious fare, and seaside views, Nice is a haven for the romantics. To experience the true heart of the French Riviera, watch the sunset as you walk along the Promenade des Anglais, see the art hanging on the walls of Fondation Maeght or grab a drink at one of the coastal city’s celebrity-filled nightclubs. When the sun is shining – which, in Nice, it always is – wander through Cours Saleya, one of the globe’s most popular flower and food markets, for fresh produce brought in by the local harvest.

It’s worth a visit; after all, Nice is considered the “foodie capital” of the world. Nice is the perfect place to visit on your France yacht charter to expand your palate with quaint bistros and boulangeries to elegant brasseries and fromageries.

Promenade des Anglais

Named “La Prom” for short, the Promenade des Anglais, or ‘English Walk,’ runs along the pebbly shore of the Nicean coastline; making it the focal point of the city, and a metaphorical compass for the rest of Nice’s frequented attractions. Lined with palms and boasting enchanting sunset views, “La Prom” is the perfect spot for a relaxing bicycle ride, a slow skate or a romantic evening stroll. Along its path are a couple of other sites worth seeing: the majestic 1912-built Hôtel Negresco and the art deco Palais de la Méditerranée, which exists as a part of an impressive, four-star palace.

Colline du Château

French for “Castle Hill,” Colline du Château is a historic hill that holds the remains of Nice’s first Ancient Greek settlement; which, considering its existence thousands of years ago, was considered to be the area’s first true Medieval town. While most of the castle has since crumbled, today, the site houses a large park and botanical garden, waterfalls, the remains of a former 11th-century Cathedral, walkways made of vibrant, 20th-century mosaics, and sweeping panoramic views of Nice and the Baie des Anges below.

Cours Saleya

Situated in the heart of Vieille Ville, or “Old Town” – in a city that is already considered to be one of the world’s most desired culinary destinations – Cours Saleya is a famous fruit, flower and vegetable market, highly regarded for its colorful produce, seductive aromas, and on select days, precious antiques. Open Tuesday through Sunday, Cours Saleya welcomes travelers and locals alike to peruse its bountiful stalls; and when they’re done, traipse through its surrounding shops and enjoy dinner at one of the nearby, likely award-winning restaurants.

Located on the south east coast of on the , Nice is the second-largest French city on the Mediterranean coast after Marseille.

The city is called Nice la Belle, which means Nice the Beautiful, which is also the title of the unofficial anthem of Nice, written by Menica Rondelly in 1912. Nice is the capital of the Alpes Maritimes departement and the second biggest city of the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region after Marseille.

The area of today's Nice is believed to be among the oldest human settlements in Europe. One of the archaeological sites, Terra Amata, displays evidence of a very early use of fire. Around 350 BC, Greeks of Marseille founded a permanent settlement and called it Nikaia, after Nike, the goddess of victory.
Down the ages, the town changed hands many times. Its strategic location and port significantly contributed to its maritime strength. For years it was an Italian dominion, then became part of France in 1860. Culturally and architecturally enriched over time, today Nice has become a truly cosmopolitan tourist destination.

The spectacular natural beauty of the Nice area and its mild Mediterranean climate came to the attention of the English upper classes in the second half of the 18th century, when an increasing number of aristocratic families took to spending their winter there. The city's main seaside promenade, the Promenade des Anglais (the Walkway of the English) owes its name to the earliest visitors to the resort.

For decades now, the picturesque Nicean surroundings have attracted not only those in search of relaxation, but also those seeking inspiration. The clear air and soft light has been of particular appeal to some of Western culture's most outstanding painters, such as Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, Niki de Saint Phalle and Arman. Their work is commemorated in many of the city's museums, including Musee Marc Chagall, Musee Matisse and Musee des Beaux-Arts Jules Cheret.

The climate and landscape are still what attracts most visitors today. It has the second largest hotel capacity in the country and it's the second-most visited place in France after Paris, receiving 4 million tourists every year.

It also has the second busiest airport in France after Paris and two convention centres dedicated to business tourism. The city also has a university, several business districts and some major cultural facilities, such as museums, a national theatre, an opera house with a regional library and several concert halls and casinos. It is the historical capital city of the County of Nice (Comte de Nice).

Nice experiences a Mediterranean climate. The summer/holiday season lasts for 6 months, from May to October, although in April and November sometimes there are temperatures above 20 °C (68 °F). Winters are mild, with average temperatures of 13.4 °C (56.1 °F) during the day and 5.8 °C (42.4 °F) at night in the period from December to February.
