Cruising Boat Spotlight - Hunter Vision 32

Cruising Boat Spotlight: The Hunter Vision 32

By: Pat Reynolds Sailboat Rigs , Sailboats

One cool thing about sailing is the vast amount of boat designs we have to choose from. From wooden yawls to foiling catamarans, there is, no doubt, a boat out there to suit your fancy. But many tend to stick to the world of production boats, especially in the cruising world – they’re tried and tested, easy to get serviced and buy parts for, and they are generally reliable and well made. They are also normally designed relatively conservatively and broadly to attract a cross-section of buyers. So with that as our foundation we wanted to take a look at a production boat that was built in the late 80s and early 90s that bucked the trends and stepped outside the norm – the Hunter Vision 32 & 36.

The 32 and 36 are essentially the same boats with different lengths so we’ll just call both boats “the Vision.” There is really nothing particularly extraordinary about the Vision compared to most cruising boats of that time except that Hunter took a crack at making a boat with a free-standing mast – literally a giant aluminum pole set far-forward and keel-stepped.

Cruising Boat Spotlight - Hunter Vision 32

No Spreaders, No Shrouds, No Backstay!

On the Hunter Vision, there is what looks like a street lamp pole holding an enormous mainsail in a quasi cat rigged set up. Not surprisingly, the configuration gets a hearty dose of contradicting reviews. Some believe that the weight and width of the freestanding mast make for poor sailing qualities, particularly upwind. Although most critics will concede that the boat does pretty well on a reach and downwind (due to the huge main’s ability to be set farther out than most boats can achieve) they will cite other qualities that indicate the boat is something of a dog. Many don’t like that there is nothing to hold onto when going forward and others flinch at the manageability (or lack thereof) of such a large main.

Of course later in the thread another sailor (a Hunter Vision owner) debunked most of the criticisms – such is the world of sailing discussions on the internet.

One thing that can’t be disputed is that Visions need no wires or turnbuckles and there is no corrosion or rig tension to worry about. It’s also said that these types of rigs allow spill-off aloft, which works well in heavier weather. Certainly the mast set so far forward creates a roomy saloon, which if you’re familiar with Hunter designs, might well have been the motivation for the attempt.

Cruising Boat Spotlight - Hunter Vision 32

As it all turned out, the arguments over whether or not this alternative idea was worth doing got cut short, for Hunter discontinued the Vision after only about five years. Sales for the boat were not outstanding but it’s supposedly the cost of the masts that killed the production.

Visions still turn up regularly on the used market and are often priced quite affordably, probably due to the mixed reviews they receive and their somewhat misunderstood, non-traditional identity.

Introducing the 1991 Hunter Vision 32, a vessel designed with simplicity and comfort in mind, perfect for those stepping into the world of cruising. Crafted with attention to detail, this innovative design offers both comfort and ease of use.

Conventional standards with the Hunter Vision 32. Its short-ended, high freeboard, and large house present a striking silhouette, accentuated by pleasing house contours. The modern sugar scoop and freestanding mast add contemporary flair, while the sailplan, featuring a fully battened main and small, non-overlapping jib, ensures minimal complexity in sail handling. This is truly a lazy sailor’s dream.

A moderate-displacement hull with a D/L ratio of 259, the Vision 32 strikes a balance between interior volume and performance. The hull’s arc-like shape and firm bilges enhance stability, while the broad stern with a spacious swim step carved into the transom adds safety and style. The fin-bulb-wing keel configuration provides a draft of 4 feet, 3 inches, optimizing both interior space and sailing ease.

Step below decks to discover a spacious interior designed for relaxation and enjoyment. The layout features a transverse double berth and a well-appointed galley counter with an icebox. With ample headroom and clever storage solutions, every inch of space is maximized for your comfort and convenience.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

I am not new to sailboats but I am however new to my Hunter. I can't seem to find hardly any video or general information on the 89 Vision 32 at all. I have service manual and schematics, etc. But as far as any real reviews or general video info, fans, comments on this vessel? Noddaa. It's as if no one bought boats that year. Any information would be helpful or links, videos you may have. Another 1989 Hunter Vision 32 owner would be fantastic even. Cheers!

Rick D

I had a 1990 for nine years. PM me with any specifics. However, here is a resource under "the boats" tab: https://hunter.sailboatowners.com/resources/index.php?task=model&mid=27

douginpa

The biggest thing is learning to handle the huge mainsail. Once you do you'll find it to be really easy and yet loads of control and power. The worst thing I found right off was how easy it could be to have the boom come flying across if the wind changed or you lose point. An essential purchase to stop huge swings of the boom is a boom brake. Here's the most efficient and cost effective one I found. http://www.landfallnavigation.com/wichardgybeasy.html Feel free to contact me with questions. I've been sailing for years, but the Vision is different...in very good ways.

Just Launched – Hunter Vision 32

First published in SAIL Magazine, 1988

by Tom Dove

With the Vision 32, Hunter Marine has identified several major technological trends in the sailing marketplace and made them affordable in a production boat. Unstayed masts, wing keels, full-battened mainsails with lazyjacks, walkthrough transoms and large cabins for entertaining have appeared on various boats in the past few years. The Vision 32 puts all these features together in a package that should appeal to new sailors and others who want an easily-handled bay cruising vessel that will serve as a pleasant entertainment center dockside or in a raftup with friends.

The boat has “an interior design with the comforts of a summer cottage”, according to Hunter, and that’s a good description. The big U-shaped settee will seat eight people comfortably around a dropleaf table while the sloped winídshield and recessed lighting give an open, attractive appearance to the wide main cabin. That wraparound windshield gives the exterior a distinctive appearance, resembling a streamlined pilothouse.

The galley has a two-burner Origo alcohol stove with oven and a double sink. The icebox is built into a clever central freestanding island in the center of the cabin which gives additional counter surface, easy access to the cooler and a place to brace yourself while preparing food under way. Wide boats need just this sort of thing for safety and convenience.

A small navigation table and electrical panel are on the starboard side opposite the galley. A stereo with four speakers is standard.

Sleeping accomodations are in a private aft cabin with a transverse double berth and in a V-berth forward of the settee, reached by climbing over the seat back and through cutout openings closed off by curtains. Kids will love this little spot, but adults would have to be agile to use it. This layout will work well with a young family as it separates the grownups from one or two children by the maximum possible distance.

In our test, the Vision 32 moved efficiently with its Yanmar diesel and two-blade fixed prop. Under sail in light air in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, it reached and ran well but made substantial leeway sailing to windward. As we sailed beyond Fort McHenry and the breeze increased to about 15 knots, the wing keel seemed to “grab on” to the water and the boat went to weather much better and moved through waves with little fuss.

Weather helm built up rapidly with increasing heel, and a reef will be in order when whitecaps appear. The unstayed aluminum Isomat rig uses the popular continuous single line reefing system with two reef points, and all lines lead aft under cover to the cockpit. The boat can be sailed with or without its fractional 100% jib.

The Vision 32 is aimed at fulfilling realistic dreams: Mom, Dad and a child or two out on semi-protected waters for weekends or a week. It isn’t built like an ocean crosser and doesn’t carry an ocean crosser’s price. At $59,900 for a true sailaway vessel, equipped with required Coast Guard gear and much more, it should have wide appeal.

  8. Review of Hunter 32 Vision

The Hunter 32 Vision is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel. The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.30 - 1.40 meter (4.27 - 4.57 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.
