An overview of sailing regatta watches.

The Seiko company was founded in 1881, when Kintarō Hattori opened a watch and jewelry shop in Tokyo. Eleven years later, in 1892, he founded the company Seikosha Co, where initially wall clocks were produced. Soon they were followed by pocket watches and watches with an alarm function. In 1913 Seiko (which means ‘precision’ in Japanese) manufactured its first wristwatch, and today the brand is well known for its inventions over the years.

Already in 1958 Seiko started with the developement of quartz movements, which let to the first commercial quartz wristwatch of the world in 1969, the Seiko Quartz Astron. The brand’s tradition in sports timing started at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, where they served as Official Timekeeper. Ever since Seiko has been involved in many sports events, eg athletics, football and sailing.

Early 1980’s Seiko developed the caliber 7A28, the world’s first analog quartz chronograph. This fully adjustable quartz movement has no plastic parts in the gear train and can be sericed and adjusted like a mechanical watch. In the years to follow the caliber 7A28 was used in a great number of different models. The 7A28-7020, for example, was worn by Roger Moore in the 1985 James Bond movie  ‘A View To A Kill’.

The 7A28-7090 regatta variant debuted in 1982 as the first real Seiko Yacht Timer, and appeared in catalogs as of 1983. It immediately stood out for its design. With the two big pushers at 10 and 2 o’clock it looked similar to a bullhead chronograph. The 9 o’clock minutes sub register features a 30-minutes counter, devided in 6 x 5 minutes in alternately light and royal blue, and a distinct yellow hand. On the outer ring of the dial there’s the yachting countdown scale for the seconds, running backwards from 60 to zero. After 1985 the Seiko Yacht Timer Quartz 7A28-7090 disappeared from the catalogs and the production ceased.

Second half of the 1980’s Seiko developed a new four jewel quartz chronograph, the caliber 8M. Besides setting the time, it also uses the crown as a selection tool by which you can choose the mode of the watch, as shown in one of the registers. It has a countdown (timer) function, what makes it highly suitable for a yachting watch. In timer-mode the movement runs actualy counterclockwise! The countdown timer can be set by one-minute intervals between 1and 30 minutes, or you can choose between one of the preset timers for 5, 10 or 15 minutes.

From early 1990 Seiko produced two series of yacht timer watches, the 8M35 and the 8M37 models . Compared to the 8M35 models, the 8M37 models have the movement mounted ‘up-side-down’. That automatically means the crown and pushers are placed on opposite sides.

In time-mode, when the watch shows the actual time, the hour hand seems a bit odd. More like a seconds hand actually. But when you switch to timer mode, you understand why. This hand then becomes the second hand for an accurate countdown. And as I said before, the movement runs counterclockwise in timer mode. In a short period of years, from 1990 upto 1993, several yachttimer models were released by Seiko.

Cal. 8M35-6010, the more rare silver version, cal. 8M35-8000/8009 (ref. SEQ001P) and 8M35-800A (ref. SEQ003P) with a plastic blue or black turnable bezel.

Both cal. 8M37-6000, either with a silver case and dial (ref. SBBH005) or with a black case and dial (ref. SBBH007). Originally with a black rubber strap.

Finally the cal. 6M37-8000, ref. SBBH013, and the 6M37-8019, ref. SGX006. The last one was released for the 1992 USA Olympic games.

Variations:

Radiant Yacht Timer, in silver case ref. TUH996PM, or two-tone case ref. YUH999PM. Obviously both with a Seiko 8M37 movement.

In 1993 Seiko changed the design of their Yacht Timers radically. Again the brand developed a new quartz regatta movement, the caliber 6M37, this time inspired by the old mechanical movements that used the 5-dot countdown system (first used by Aquastar in the 1960’s ).

The first model that was released, is the cal. 6M37-6000.

1995 Seiko introduced the Yacht Timer Sports 200   models, as part of The Great Blue series. Inspired by the older mechanical movements, Seiko developed their quartz movement with the 5-dot countdown system, caliber 6M37-6010.

At Baselworld 2007, Seiko launched a new marine collection, the Velatura. The collection included two new calibers, one of them the Yachting Timer caliber 7T84. Obviously Seiko stepped away from the 5-dot countdown system again.

With the launch of the Velatura series in 2007, Seiko rose to the challenge to build watches that perform on the open ocean, with a collection characterized by robustness, high functionality and durability. Also in 2007, Seiko was selected as the Watch Partner of the International 49er Class Association.

To mark the fourth year of their partnership, Seiko launced a new model in the Velatura collection, a standard chronograph housing with the caliber 7T62 Alarm movement. Not with a special countdown function, but with a coloured 5-10-15 minutes subdial.

The watch is available with either a stainless steel case with black hard coating and a polyurethane strap (ref. SNAE17) or a stainless steel case with blue hard coating and a stainless steel bracelet with three-fold slasp (ref. SNAE19).

Review of the Seiko Velatura SRH005

I’ve always been a big fan Seiko Kinetic watches. There’s something about generating power through physical movement that I somehow find more intriguing than a static and stationary solar cell. I like how you can hear the rotor turn, and even feel the friction that generates the power. And I like how the power reserve indicator let you know if you’ve been giving your Seiko Kinetic enough wrist time. It may sound strange, but there’s something a little more alive about a Kinetic watch than its solar or battery powered counterparts.

With the introduction of the new Kinetic Direct Drive movement which appears in four of Seiko’s new Velatura watches (two available in the US — the SRH001 and the SRH005), the Kinetic experience gets even more interesting. Kinetic Direct Drive movements allow the watch to be “hand wound”. Before the Direct Drive, there were three ways to charge your Seiko Kinetic:

• Wave it back and forth for a minute or two to spin the rotor. Anyone who has ever owned a Kinetic is probably familiar with this motion.
• Wear it. Daily use is more than enough to keep a Kinetic watch sufficiently charged. It’s only when you have a Kinetic that is part of an extensive watch rotation that you have to concern yourself with keeping it charged.
• Place it on a Kinetic charging unit. You can buy charging stands which conduct power directly into the capacitor through the case and dial of the watch to essentially “quick charge” it.

But now with the Kinetic Direct Drive, you can charge the capacitor directly simply by turning the driving wheel. The procedure is certainly much more natural and subtle than the martini shaking motion of the past.

The Seiko Kinetic Direct Drive takes what I love about Kinetic movements to the next level by making the charging process not just active, but actually interactive . Shortly after you start turning the drive wheel to charge the watch, the power reserve indicator jumps to life and turns into a real-time power generation indicator. It’s a bit like a Kinetic tachometer, you might say. Here’s how it works:

As you manually wind the watch, the power indicator shows you how much power you are currently generating using the grayish scale to the left and inside the total power scale. If you watch carefully, you will notice that the low point at which the hand starts will gradually begin to rise, indicating how much power you have generated thus far (every five seconds of winding generates one hour of power). There are six segments indicating up to six hours of newly generated power. When you stop winding, the power indicator drops down for four seconds to show you how much power you just generated, then it moves down to the zero position, then back up to show how much total power is in the reserve. At this point, the power indicator hand is using the total power scale (from zero to one month). It sounds complicated, but once you understand it and see it work, it’s pretty intuitive, and even a little addictive.

Seiko seems to be well aware of the effect Kinetic movements have on us as they refer to their new Direct Drive as “emotional technology”. The Kinetic Direct Drive is more like building your own fire as opposed to flipping a switch on a natural gas fireplace. It’s a bit more work, but something about it makes it a bit more satisfying, as well. Playing a direct role in keeping your watch happily running gives us watch aficionados a great excuse to spend more time playing with the things we love.

Features of the Seiko Velatura SRH005 include:

• Seiko’s new Direct Drive Kinetic movement. The watch can be charged manually by hand winding it, and it charges naturally as the movement of your arm rotates an internal rotor.
• Anti-reflective sapphire crystal.
• Date at the 6 o’clock position, and a retrograde day indicator.
• Stainless steel case and bracelet.
• Three-fold clasp with push-button release.
• Very bright LumiBrite paint on the hour hand, minute hand, and on the hour indices.
• Recessed reset button in case the integrated circuit ever needs a quick reboot.
• Automatic hand alignment which ensures that the power indicator hand is always accurate (calibration occurs every 24 hours).
• Water resistant to 10 bar, 100 meters, or 330 feet.

The Seiko Velatura line is designed to be a marine and yachting collection. While two Velaturas have yachting timers (the SPC005 and the SPC007), the affiliation of the SRH005 to the world of yachting is a bit more indirect. The movement can be wound without pulling out the crown which keeps the internals of the watch safe from moisture. Additionally, the bezel screws, crown guards, caseback, and the elegant design of the dial are all reminiscent of yachting instruments.

So far, I have found that people are either drawn to the unique bracelet design of the SRH005, or they don’t care for it. Personally, I love it. I love distinguishing and unique watches, and the black urethane that covers the center links of the bracelet really make it stand out. Maybe it’s the suggestion of a checkered pattern or a racing stripe, but it also somehow conveys the sense of speed to me.

The Seiko Velatura SRH005 is a big, elegant, and satisfying watch. If all you’re looking for is something to tell time, the Velatura is obviously overkill. But if you’re looking for something unique, fun, and even a little personal, give a Velatura a try. MSRP on the SRH005 is $1,195.

The belt is out of quaranty and should to be changed within two years. Near 80-100 USD. Be careful about the belt.

My watch has an MSRP of $1195 in 2007. I just purchased my watch from a Jewelry store in 2022 as new for $2100 is this a scam?

Not sure the model you purchased or where you purchased from, but 2007 pricing and 2022 pricing are very different. Did you buy a new Velatura model (like is there a new version of it) or did you buy a new old stock model?

SEIKO presents the new Yachting Timer SPC049P1 from its Velatura Collection.

In addition to renewing the agreement with the 49er Association, SEIKO has concluded a new agreement with the 29erXX Association whose new-design skiffs are fast becoming accepted as the most exciting new class for the world’s leading women sailors. This new agreement is celebrated in the launch of a new series of Velatura models for women.

The undoubted star of the 2009 Velatura collection is the new Yachting Timer. The new version is even more robust than its 2008 predecessor. The case is made from titanium, covered with a new hard coating.

The watch has a new screw-in crown system that ensures water resistance to 20 bar and it features a new combination strap in which leather and ballistic nylon are combined to offer a unique blend of elegance and strength. The dial with the pre-set start times highlighted in bright yellow and blue for even easier legibility.

Vintage Seiko World Time - Collectors / Owners

• Production ran from March 1964 through Nov 1964
• In December 1964 the case back was changed to a Dolphin, but production was just for this single month - a photo of the dolphin is in the appendix
• You will see 3 GMT hands used here. The tapered gold-toned version belongs on the dark gray dial. The tapered black version belongs on early silver dials, likely through part of August 1964. The thin black GMT hand belongs on silver dials from August 1964 through the end of the run.
• Silver dials with code JAPAN 6217-7000 TAD are not very common - I wonder if these dials were used for the North American Market?

• but the GMT is all new - always red, and with a lumed arrow
• It is possible that some early production examples of the 6117-601X retained the cities bezel from the 6217-7010.

• Early dials carried forward the placement of WORLD TIME at 6-oclock, but later this was moved to 12-oclock
• The cities bezel was updated 3 times, and there are “right and wrong” bezels on different dials
• The gold-toned version was only produced in 1972, and had only one dial and bezel configuration
• In 1974-1975 there is a short run of the main black and white dial variants without lume. Dial codes on those end in 4
• Aftermarket dials, bezels and hands abound for this model - additional caution and scrutiny is required when shopping these!

Thank you for the info! Worth noting is the GMT hand in the 6117-640x is bent towards the tip to clear the indices.  

Thanks for using my bracelet pics above. I hadn't noticed as I looked at your link first and not your actual posting. The adjustment links are quite interesting in the 6117-6010 bracelet in that they are held together by small spring bars. Seiko only use this type of bracelet on a few models from the 1960's including some of the hand wound Sportsman bracelets. After that, they moved to cotter pins and later pin collar configurations (and annoyingly screws for some King Seiko VANAC and Grand Seiko bracelets). -Brian  

@jlatassa - yes, the "Uncle" bracelets I linked will fit the 19mm 6217's - They are my favorite modern replacement. @hi_bri Thank you for the excellent photos and early help while I was just getting going with these!  

@DC Lavman - Thanks! @Saswatch - NOTE: there are after market hand sets done for the 6117-640x - including the bent GMT, with the bend in the wrong spot vs the originals. The hands are also pretty easy to spot once you know what to look for.

yes, as Trog7074 indicated. This reissue is from the classic 6117-8000. I have one of the original ones and it is really nice. Although, I don't travel for business anymore, so it doesn't get much wear.

I will be revising the first thread soon(ish) with (among other things) a the black dial version of the Asian Games. Also of interested to some - I believe all of the 1967 Olympic torch re-editions with red GMT use Radium lume on the hour and minute hands, which indicates to me that that version specifically was likely intended for the US market.  

I've updated the first thread with RADIUM LUME call outs. Namely the 6217-7000 with lumed hands and red GMT from 1967 and the 6117-6019 versions all appear to use Radium Lume. I have many more photos to add in the near(ish) future... I also barred out some 6117-6400/9 versions that I no longer think are original combinations, reducing that list down just a little.
