The Verve 42 is unashamedly bold, ambitious and non-conformist. Shunning the merest thought of compromise and challenging established preconceptions and rules, it has all you could ever want or even dare to dream of in an outboard.

2022 Azimut Verve 42
- By Capt. Chris Caswell
- July 8, 2022
In motorcycle parlance, a cafe racer is a bike tricked out to look like a competition version but only flits from the pub to the bistro.
While the new Azimut Verve 42 might look like a waterborne cafe racer for jaunts from Cannes to St. Tropez carrying champers and revelers, this boat is no poseur. We discovered this while smashing through and leaping off rough seas in the Gulf Stream, which tested its construction of vinylester resin (for blister protection), plus carbon fiber in the deck and hardtop (for strength). Built to Euro classification CE Category A (winds to 45 mph, seas to 13 feet), the Verve 42 gave off nary a creak.
Testing in angry seas also proved Michael Peters ’ stepped-V ventilated hull. It landed softly on its deep-V and tracked arrow-straight.
A smaller version of Azimut’s Verve 47, the 42 could take you from Miami to Bimini (or Newport to Nantucket) for lunch and back at 50 mph, thanks to triple 450 hp Mercury Racing outboards. But who would?
Interior and Accessories
This is no spartan day cruiser, but a full-fledged yacht with a private owner’s cabin (queen-size berth), a head with a full shower stall, and a forward berth. Fully air-conditioned courtesy of the 11 kW Onan genset, there is a galley hidden behind lacquered locker doors.
You can serve your meals either in the cabin on the table that converts into a double berth, or in the cockpit on the cool table that rises electrically from flush in the sole. For water fun, the port hullside unfolds to create a beach with a swim ladder. Because the engines are aft, there is immense stowage under the cockpit.
The skipper and two friends get high-back, electrically adjustable helm seats behind a sweeping dash with twin Raymarine 15-inch monitors. The Verve 42 surprises with a cockpit-level walkway forward to the bow seating.
Thinking of the Verve 42 as just an overnighter misses the point—this boat is for long weekends (or weeks) aboard without feeling like you are roughing it. The Italians have merged a center-console (with a limited cabin) and an express cruiser (without forward seating) to create a great choice for buyers.
High Points
- Wraparound bowrider seating is a delight, with a sun pad, a dining table, and easy access via a walkway to port.
- Full stand-up shower with glass doors and a seat helps make it a true cruiser.
- Privacy door for the owner’s cabin is special, plus there’s storage in the headboard and space to dress properly.
- Good service access to systems and batteries via the cockpit floor hatches.
- Given the speed potential, more handgrips (round rather than square) in the cockpit would be appreciated.
- Considering the long-weekender capabilities, a single-burner Kenyon induction cooktop seems stingy—no boeuf bourguignon for this crew.
- Overhead buttons for various systems (lighting, windlass, wipers, etc.) look cool and aircrafty, but are a stretch for seated skippers.
Toughest Competitor
Cruisers 42 Cantius ($880,480) has IPS drives and two full cabins, with two full heads en suite. However, the forward seating is small, without a cockpit-level walkway.

Azimut Verve 42 Reviewed
- By Chris Caswell
- August 17, 2022
Sea trials are often relatively calm affairs: Run the boat on reasonably smooth water, grab the performance numbers and get a sense of the boat. My run on the Azimut Yachts Verve 42 was a bit more lively.
First, as we headed out the Port Everglades inlet in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, I could see mountains moving in the Gulf Stream just offshore. Second, the skipper was Federico Ferrante, president of Azimut Benetti USA and clearly an aspiring Formula One driver. Before we cleared the inlet, he grabbed a fistful of throttles for the triple 450 hp Mercury Racing outboards, and we were off on Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. I’ve run the Miami-Nassau powerboat race from Florida to the Bahamas and taken less abuse than we tried to give the Verve that afternoon.
And the 42-footer took it in stride. Blasting off waves, the boat landed softly thanks to the 22.5-degree transom deadrise and Michael Peters hull form. Yes, there was spray, but most of it was thrown aside, courtesy of double strakes and a wide spray chine/rail. We were in flat water long enough to see a top speed of 45 knots, and then the Gulf Stream dictated our speeds while we occasionally pushed the envelope.
This is a yacht that can make it from Florida to Bimini in just over an hour (given less-strenuous conditions) and that has comfortable overnight accommodations upon arrival. There is a queen-size berth in a private stateroom, a head with a shower (that itself has 6-foot-6-inch headroom) and a convertible V-berth for kids or friends.
Getting aboard, whether from the water or a dock, is easy. First, there is a full-beam transom walkway a step down from the cockpit and forward of the engines. A portside deck unfolds to create a beach, and there is a stainless-steel ladder with wide rungs for swimmers.
Then, it’s relaxation time. In the cockpit, the L-shaped settee wraps around the starboard side, with a table that rises electrically from the sole when needed. Just forward and tucked abaft the helm seats are an Isotherm fridge and ice maker.
The deck layout might be termed “semi-center-console,” since the starboard side has a conventional raised deck (steps up from the cockpit), while the port side is a dedicated walkway at cockpit level around the house to make access to the bow seating easy and safe.
At the foredeck, there is a sun pad with backrests for two to three people atop the cabin house. A U-shaped settee in the bow around a table calls out for sundowners and munchies at anchor under the awning. The 42’s hidden anchor windlass has a remote control and a locker to hold 130 feet of chain. For security, the entire bow is surrounded by welded stainless-steel rails.
In the pilothouse are three electrically adjustable bolstered seats (think Ferrari-type side bolsters) and a raised foot brace. The vessel’s black dash has subtle blue lighting and space for twin 15-inch Raymarine multifunction displays abaft the windshield, which has a single pantograph wiper. To keep things cool, there are air-conditioning vents in the dash and an overhead hatch next to rows of aircraft-style push-button switches. The skipper has access to the Humphree automatic trim system to keep the 42 running flat and fast in all conditions.
Below is a cool, serene Italian condo designed by Francesco Struglia, all grays and blacks and nubby upholstery. To port is the galley, mostly hidden behind lacquered cabinetry, with a Kenyon induction range, Miele oven, fridge and sink.
Opposite is the head compartment with an electric toilet and sink, as well as a separate glass-door stall shower with a seat. Forward, seating wraps around a table that lowers electrically to form a couple-size V-berth, and a TV is mounted on the after bulkhead.
The owner’s stateroom is aft with a privacy door. Windows, including an opening portlight, are hidden in the exterior swoosh graphics. They make the area bright. Stowage is hidden in the headboard.
Electrical power is provided by an 11 kW Onan generator that’s tucked under the cockpit, with access through a deck hatch. This unit easily handles the triple-zone air conditioning and galley needs.
The Verve 42 also has a sizable undercockpit room, thanks to the powerplants hanging off the stern. Owner-operators will find a step-in service area for the outboard systems, as well as an aft “hold” in the transom that’s large enough to serve as a garage for water toys, fenders and lines.
The Azimut Verve 42 is well-mannered, even with the 1,350 horses, and is a stylish day cruiser with weekending capability. It never hurts that owners can put down the hammer to get to any destination in a hurry. As an alternative to center-consoles with limited liveaboard space or conventional express cruisers without forward seating, the Verve 42 offers the best of all worlds.
It’s a Hull Thing
Michael Peters designed the Verve 42’s hull using his patented Stepped-Vee Ventilated Tunnel hull. This deep-V design incorporates twin athwartships steps and a stern tunnel. The result is as soft riding as a conventional deep-V hull but with improved directional stability and solid tracking when turning at speed.
Driving Force
The Mercury Racing 450R outboard is purpose-built for high performance, with a V-8, 4.6-liter quad-cam powerhead. A Mercury Racing belt-driven supercharger ups the horsepower to 450. Engine mounts isolate vibration, and electrohydraulic steering is standard. Routine oil checks and top-offs can be done via the Mercury pop-off service door.
How It’s Made
The Verve 42’s hull is built from conventional fiberglass using vinylester resins for blister protection, while the deck and hardtop include carbon fiber for strength without added weight. The Verve 42 is built to CE Classification Type A, making it suitable for sea voyages where winds can exceed 45 mph and seas can grow to 13 feet.

The Azimut Verve 42 is not merely an innovative outboard, but it is one of a kind. Combining the adrenalin-inducing performance of a true sports boat with an extraordinary level of comfort and liveability, it removes the word “compromise” from yachting vocabulary.
High performance double stepped hull by Michael Peters
The hull has a deep V and a central stern tunnel, based on the famous Stepped "V" Ventilated Tunnel (SVVT) developed and patented by Michael Peters. The classic deep V with two steps and a central stern tunnel improves the boat’s longitudinal stability when turning at high speed. Designed to reduce water resistance significantly and deliver excellent performance without affecting the size and proportions of the hull, the SVVT hull guarantees extraordinary directional stability even when turning.
Fold out side beach platform
A side folding bulwark creates a comfortable swimming platform with retractable ladder for easy access to the sea.
A window on your wake
The helm station has been enhanced with a hull side window reaching the bulwark that creates a remarkable sense of continuity with the outside world. Indeed, the driver enjoys a special bond with the water, particularly at high speed, when the wake that is clearly visible on either side of the boat seems to become part of the yacht’s structure.
Triple Mercury propulsion
With three Mercury outboard engines rated 400 hp or 450 hp, Verve 42 has a top speed of 45 knots and a cruising speed of 33 knots. The Mercury V8 450s are the ideal propulsion system to guarantee top performance for boats with a dynamic and sporty DNA like the Verve 42. Ideal for light, fast boats, they deliver a better weight/power ratio than more powerful options, quick and responsive handling, and an optimised cruising speed. The choice of these outboards has made it possible to achieve important design goals, including the lowest displacement possible and better manoeuvrability, guaranteeing a pleasurable, safe and sporty driving experience.

Luxury Rules at the Moscow Yacht Show
The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.
This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.
A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.
It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.
The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.
Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.
Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

Who was on superyacht that sank off Sicily?
Twenty-two people were on board the Bayesian superyacht including British technology tycoon Mike Lynch, his wife and 18-year-old daughter, and Morgan Stanley International boss Jonathan Bloomer.
Friday 23 August 2024 12:34, UK
Details have emerged of the 22 people who were on board the superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily.
The British-flagged vessel named Bayesian was carrying 12 passengers and 10 members of crew when it got into difficulty in the early hours of Monday.
Seven bodies have now been recovered. The other 15 people on board were rescued.
Here's what we know about those who were on the yacht.
Follow latest updates on the superyacht sinking
British technology tycoon Mike Lynch was among the original six people missing. On Thursday, divers confirmed his body had been recovered.
Raised in Ilford, east London by Irish parents, the 59-year-old made millions with the software company Autonomy he set up in 1996.
He had an estimated net worth of £852m, according to the 2023 Sunday Times Rich List, and is believed to have owned the yacht.
Off the back of Automomy's global success, Mr Lynch was given the roles of science adviser to former prime minister David Cameron and non-executive director of the BBC.
The Cambridge maths and sciences graduate sold the firm for £8.64bn to US giant Hewlett Packard (HP) in 2011.
Dubbed the "British Bill Gates", Mr Lynch has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case related to the sale of Autonomy to HP in 2011.
HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American technology firm. Mr Lynch denied any wrongdoing.
In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges .

Hannah Lynch
Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch was also on board. A body believed to be that of the teenager was recovered on Friday from the yacht wreckage.
She had been on holiday with her parents, having secured a place to study English at the University of Oxford, according to reports.
Her former school, Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, west London, said they were "incredibly shocked by the news that Hannah and her father are among those missing in this tragic accident" when the yacht first sank.
Angela Bacares
Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares was on board the yacht and was rescued.
The 57-year-old said she and Mr Lynch were awoken by the boat "tilting" at 4am - half an hour before it sank.
Jonathan Bloomer
Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley International, was confirmed dead on Thursday.
According to the Financial Times, Mr Bloomer appeared as a defence witness for Mr Lynch during his US criminal trial and the pair were good friends. He also chaired Autonomy's audit committee.
The 70-year-old was the chief executive of UK-Hong Kong insurer Prudential until he was ousted by the board in 2005.
He was also chairman of the insurance provider Hiscox.
Judy Bloomer
Mr Bloomer's wife Judy was on the yacht trip with her husband. Divers confirmed they found her body on Thursday.
Mrs Bloomer was a former board member at The Eve Appeal charity, which focuses on gynaecological cancers.
The charity described her as a "brilliant champion for women's health and medical research... an incredible supporter, committee member, and trustee of our charity for over 20 years".

Recaldo Thomas
The yacht's on-board chef Recaldo Thomas died in the sinking.
He was Canadian-Antiguan and part of the crew of the Bayesian.
His body was the first to be recovered from the wreckage.
Chris Morvillo
US lawyer Chris Morvillo was among those divers found dead on Thursday.
The father-of-two worked on Mr Lynch's US fraud trial and was a partner of law firm Clifford Chance's US branch.
Mr Morvillo was assistant attorney for the Southern District of New York between 1995 and 2005 and worked on the terrorist investigation into the 9/11 attacks.
In a recent LinkedIn post, he thanked the legal team that helped win Mr Lynch's trial.
Signing off the post, he said: "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo.
"None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…."
Neda Morvillo
Mr Morvillo's wife Neda died in the disaster alongside her husband.
The 57-year-old had a luxury jewellery brand, which she ran under her maiden name Neda Nassiri.

Ayla Ronald
Ayla Ronald, a senior associate at Clifford Chance, survived the yacht disaster, the law firm confirmed.
The 36-year-old worked alongside Chris Morvillo in helping defend Mike Lynch in court.
Clifford Chance said in a statement: "Our utmost priority is providing support to the family as well as our colleague Ayla Ronald, who together with her partner, thankfully survived the incident."
She is originally from Christchurch, New Zealand, but lives in London, her father told local media there.
He said she was left "very shaken" but "she and her partner are alive".
Charlotte Golunski
Charlotte Golunski was on board the yacht and was rescued along with her one-year-old daughter, Sofia.
She spoke to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, confirming she survived the yacht sinking and told how she kept her daughter alive after she was rescued.
"I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning," she said.
"It was all dark. In the water I couldn't keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others."
The 35-year-old is a partner at one of Mr Lynch's firms - Invoke Capital - and has worked there since 2012, according to her LinkedIn profile.
She also worked at Hewlett Packard, which acquired Autonomy in 2011, for 11 months.
Before that, she studied history at the University of Oxford.

James Emsley
Ms Golunski's partner James Emsley was also rescued from the yacht, according to Sicily's civil protection agency.
The 36-year-old is the father of her one-year-old daughter.
James Cutfield
The 51-year-old captain of the yacht spoke to Italian newspaper La Repubblica after he was rescued.
Mr Cutfield, from New Zealand, was taken for treatment at the Termini Imerese emergency unit, where he told the newspaper: "We didn't see it coming."
Leah Randall
Leah Randall was part of the Bayesian crew and survived the sinking.
She was pictured going ashore in Porticello on Monday morning and is from South Africa.
Her mother Heidi told Sky News said she was "beyond relieved that my daughter's life was spared by the grace of God".
"It doesn't make it any easier living with the heartache of those who have lost their lives [or are] missing. My very deepest condolences to the chef's family as they formed a great friendship," she said.
Katja Chicken
Katja Chicken was another South African member of crew on board the Bayesian and was pictured being brought to safety in Porticello on Monday.
The Italian coastguard confirmed on Tuesday evening that Leo Eppel, a crew member, also survived the yacht sinking.

Azimut 62 Fly First Look: Seting New Standards for Outdoor Entertaining
- Top stories
Azimut unveiled the brand new Fly 62 at the Cannes boat show this month. Along with the world premiere of the Seadeck 7 and show premieres of the Seadeck 6 and a revamped S8, it caps an impressive flurry of new launch activity from one of Italy’s biggest yards.
The big news on the Azimut 62 Fly is an exciting new cockpit treatment. Called the Beach Cockpit, it features a clever new electrically powered aft sofa with a seat base that drops down into the deck while the backrest simultaneously folds out and back, converting it from a forward- facing dinette sofa to a low-level aft facing sunpad. The result is an unobstructed view of the sea from both the saloon and cockpit, all without recourse to the complex and costly fold-down terraces that some yards favour.
Other outdoor spaces on the Azimut 62 Fly look equally inviting. There’s a long and well-equipped flybridge with a cosy lounge area overlooking the stern and a larger dining and helm station forward under the shelter of a hardtop.
The Beach Cockpit’s low-level sunbed converts to a raised transom bench
And there’s a very sociable-looking foredeck lounge with lots of deeply upholstered face-to-face seating and a walkway through the middle. While the overall design comes from Alberto Mancini, the interior is by Fabio Fantolino, whose speciality is clean, fresh spaces with minimal clutter. The Azimut 62 Fly renderings show a bright, user-friendly saloon/galley with big windows, light oak veneers, neutral coloured fabrics and curved edges for easier movement around the main deck. The split-level saloon includes an aft galley to port with a cosy coffee/dining area opposite and a larger lounge amidships.

Soft curves and neutral colours make for a safe and calming interior
With an LOA of 63ft 8in and a maximum beam of 16ft 8in, the new Azimut 62 Fly is around 4ft longer and 1in wider than the current Azimut 60 but thanks to extensive use of weight saving carbon fibre, especially in the superstructure and flybridge, it’s actually marginally lighter at a claimed 35.3 tonnes. The other big change is the switch from shaftdrive engines to IPS pods, giving a slight increase in speed (up from 31 to 32 knots) and efficiency from the same 900hp Volvo Penta D13 engines.
