Owner review: rolex yacht-master 40 126622.

Before we get to my Rolex Yacht-Master 40 126622 review, we need some background. In 1992 Rolex introduced a watch that shared the silhouette of their beloved Submariner but in solid 18k yellow gold, embossed YG bezel insert soldered to the bezel, funky white dial, and the unusual name “Yacht-Master” written where “Submariner” would normally live. People then and now still wonder.. “Why?”.

Rumor has it Rolex wanted to drastically update the Submariner but were scared that the changes were too extreme. The Submariner was essentially their poster child and arguably their most iconic watch. Fearing backlash, they created a whole new line. Rolex rarely creates completely new watches, the last time they made a new watch before the Rolex Yacht-Master was in 1964 when the Daytona was introduced. Luckily it paid off as the Yacht-Master was pretty well received!

Even though the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 at first glance looks very similar to the Submariner it’s a totally different wearing experience. The case shape is completely different from the Sub. Its case profile is composed of compound curves with the lugs swooping downwards very similar to a Daytona, the case is also fully polished. My particular Rolex Yacht-Master 40 126622 being Roleisum (Rolex’s term for the combination of Platinum and Steel which was first introduced in 1999 with the ref. 16622), in combination with the blue sunburst dial and red accents, gives it such a unique aesthetic it sets it apart in Rolex’s catalog. Rolex I think perfected their blue dials, it’s absolutely gorgeous! Pictures do not do it justice whatsoever. In person, it appears much darker, almost black however in direct light that’s when the striking blue hue pops. The date function is also very convenient!

What is it like to wear a Rolex Yacht-Master? I would describe it as the most comfortable and stressful watch I have ever worn and owned. What most people don’t realize is that it’s a thin watch and I mean THIN. At 11.5mm it’s just as thin or even thinner than a 34mm 114200 Air-King! Like what? The case hugs your wrist amazingly while the oyster bracelet seems to caress you. It makes you want to wear it every single day, I mean how could you not? Thin, sporty, beautiful, comfortable and low key a strap monster. Until you see a scratch or nick on the solid Platinum bezel insert, call up Rolex Service Center to see how much it would be to replace it and they slap you in the face with a $2500 (before taxes) quote for JUST the bezel/bezel insert assembly (they’re soldered together remember?). Then you think “Okay, okay which Seiko ’s do I sell to cover the cost of a freaking bezel”. Did I mention the case is fully polished?

Has this ever happened to me? No, because I’m extremely OCD, however I was curious and called RSC, I also used to own the 16622 and was trained to wear long sleeves only, only wear it sparingly, cover my wrist when walking through doorways, never let it touch denim (yes, denim will scratch it apparently), and for all I know never sneeze near it or even look at it too long because for all I know that could probably scratch it too. To top it all off, of COURSE the bracelet and clasp has Polished Center Links! While I am exaggerating the fragility of the Rolex Yacht-Master, the stress of potentially scuffing it is real.

The Rolex Yacht-Master 40 126622 is arguably one of my favorite watches ever made. I never thought I’d ever get to own one. It’s beautiful, ridiculously comfortable, relatively uncommon, however so stressful to wear. I have owned it for almost exactly one year and I personally try to enjoy every second I wear it; I even strap changed it with zero scuffs! I have and I do but my OCD and extreme caution lends itself to be a difficult one to fully appreciate without worry. I’ve debated if this watch was right for me all the time. However, I would recommend this watch to anyone minutely interested. I have no regrets having owned two of them like an insane person, but who in the watch collecting world isn’t insane?

Is the Yacht-Master the Ultimate Modern Rolex?

When most people think of Rolex, the Submariner is usually the first model that comes to mind. It’s an icon, after all —perhaps  the  icon. But there’s another Rolex sports watch that, while overlooked by some, offers a combination of features that could arguably make it the ultimate modern Rolex: the Yacht-Master.

Introduced in 1992, the Yacht-Master is one of the younger collections in the Rolex lineup. This gives it a unique position in the catalog—one that isn’t bound by the same historical constraints as the brand's mid-century icons. As a result, the Yacht-Master collection is diverse, with a range of sizes, materials, and configurations that set it apart from the rest of Rolex’s professional lineup.

A Broad Range of Sizes

One of the most compelling aspects of the Yacht-Master collection is the variety of sizes it offers. In the current lineup, you can choose between 37mm, 40mm, and 42mm cases. This is particularly noteworthy because no other Rolex professional watch comes close to offering this kind of range. The Submariner, for example, is only available in 41mm, and the Daytona is limited to 40mm. We now have some optionality in the Explorer lineup , but aside from the OP, that's about it.

Regardless of the size you choose, the Yacht-Master has curved lugs designed to comfortably hug your wrist: one of its major differences from the Submariner. This isn't just a small tweak —it completely shifts the wearing experience of the watch.

For those who prefer something even smaller, there are discontinued Yacht-Master models in 35mm and 29mm sizes. This level of size variety is something you’d typically find in Rolex’s dressier models like the Datejust, making the Yacht-Master an outlier in the professional category.

A Diverse Palette of Materials

When it comes to materials, the Yacht-Master collection is just as diverse. Current models are available in stainless steel, yellow gold, white gold, two-tone (Everose gold), titanium , and a combination of steel and Everose gold (known as Everose Rolesor). This wide array of options opens up the Yacht-Master collection to a broad spectrum of buyers, suiting a variety of tastes.

A standout material combination that has become synonymous with the Yacht-Master is Rolesium, which pairs a stainless steel case with a platinum bezel. This combination is exclusive to the Yacht-Master and makes it recognizable from across the room. Additionally, the collection includes gem-set versions , where precious stones are set into the bezel and/or dial, adding an extra layer of bling.

Innovative Bracelet and Strap Options

Historically, the Yacht-Master was paired with Rolex’s classic three-link Oyster bracelet. However, in 2015, Rolex introduced the Oysterflex bracelet on the Yacht-Master—a hybrid rubber strap with a metal blade inside, giving it the rigidity of a bracelet with the comfort of a strap. The introduction of the Oysterflex was a significant move for Rolex, showcasing their willingness to innovate within the Yacht-Master collection.

Today, gold Yacht-Master models (whether yellow, white, or Everose) come fitted with the Oysterflex bracelet, while Rolesium, Everose Rolesor, and titanium models are equipped with the traditional Oyster bracelet. This range of bracelet options further adds to the Yacht-Master’s versatility, catering to different preferences and use cases.

Most current models feature black dials, but there are also choices like blue, slate, and even diamond-paved dials, depending on the specific reference. The bezels, which are bidirectional and feature a 60-minute scale, come in platinum, Everose gold, or black ceramic. This range of options allows for a high degree of customization: not a common thing in Rolex's catalog.

Why the Yacht-Master Stands Out

The Yacht-Master’s relative youth compared to other Rolex models allows it to be a platform for innovation, akin to (but not quite on the level of) what we see from Tudor . Rolex has used the Yacht-Master to debut features like the Oysterflex bracelet, matte black ceramic bezel inserts, and RLX titanium cases. This willingness to experiment has made the Yacht-Master a dynamic part of the Rolex lineup.

Whether you prefer the luxurious look and feel of Everose gold, the light weight of titanium, or the versatility of a smaller case size, the Yacht-Master has something to offer.

Final Thoughts: The Ultimate Modern Rolex?

So, is the Yacht-Master the ultimate modern Rolex? In many ways, it is. It combines the brand’s iconic dive watch design with modern innovations, offering unparalleled versatility in terms of size, material, and configuration. While it may not have the storied histories of other (perhaps similar-looking) Rolex watches, the Yacht-Master more than makes up for it with its forward-thinking approach and wide-reaching appeal.

The Yacht-Master’s bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel is made entirely from precious metals or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-tech ceramic. The raised polished numerals and graduations stand out clearly against a matt, sand-blasted background.

This functional bezel – which allows the wearer to calculate, for example, the sailing time between two buoys – is also a key component in the model’s distinctive visual identity.

Like all Rolex Professional watches, the Yacht-Master 40 offers exceptional legibility in all circumstances, and especially in the dark, thanks to its Chromalight display.

The broad hands and hour markers in simple shapes – triangles, circles, rectangles – are filled with a luminescent material emitting a long-lasting glow.

Everose Rolesor

A true Rolex signature, Rolesor has featured on Rolex models since the early 1930s, and was trademarked as a name in 1933. It is one of the prominent pillars of the Oyster collection.

The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology, designed to be both robust and comfortable. It is equipped with an Oysterlock folding clasp, which prevents accidental opening and the Easylink comfort extension link, also exclusive to Rolex.

This ingenious system allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, providing additional comfort in any circumstance.

The world is slowly returning to normal following the Covid-19 pandemic, with many events slated for last year now making a highly anticipated return this summer. One such event that many are buzzing about this week is the 2020 UEFA European Championship, which was originally scheduled to take place June 12th – July 12th of last year and will instead make its triumphant return June 11th – July 11th of 2021. Our list kicks off with arguably one of the most impressive watch collections in soccer. Spanish soccer star and Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos is one of the top players in the world. While it has since been confirmed that he will be leaving the team on June 30th and will be left off Spain’s roster for Euro 2020 following an injury-plagued season, his luxury watch collection is still worth highlighting, with brands such as Patek Philippe, IWC, Bulgari, and Rolex taking up space in his impressive timepiece collection.

Ramos was recently spotted wearing a White Rolesor Datejust II ref. 116334 with a black dial. The watch has since been discontinued (along with all Datejust II models) but can still be found on the pre-owned market for around $10k. Sergio Ramos’ Rolex collection also includes the coveted Everose Yacht-Master 126655 on an Oysterflex bracelet that retails for $27,300 and a handsome yellow gold Submariner 116618LB with a blue dial and bezel, which is available on the secondary market for around $40k.
