Are Swath platforms the ideal superyacht design?

The design of a SWATH is as extraordinary as its initials imply and may not mean much to you even when spelt out: Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull. But it could be the next design phenomenon to be taken up by clients who seek ever-increasing comfort and volume for their homes on the sea – a new style of expedition vessel, if you like.

The evidence comes from discussions with Till von Krause of Abeking & Rasmussen (A&R), which builds SWATHs for commercial applications, and Andrew Langton of Reymond Langton Design. Together they have been working on developing a 62m SWATH with interior volumes equivalent to that of an 80m monohull, for clients whose demands include travel in extreme comfort, staying at anchor on a stable platform in almost any weather conditions, use of an on-board helipad for guests and limousine tenders for ship-to-shore transfers.

To give you some idea of what a private SWATH looks like we take you back to an article on the 41m Silver Cloud (Boat International, April 2009) the first to be built at A&R for her American owners Alex and Renate Dreyfoos. They say it causes quite a stir wherever she goes. In just two years they have covered thousands of sea miles on board, encountering some nasty weather systems along the way that would normally have kept them in port – but such is the construction of these vessels that weather patterns are no longer a problem.

Extraordinarily, before the couple took delivery of Silver Cloud they were in danger of having to hang up their logbook and abort adventurous plans because of the oldest on-board affliction: seasickness. Even zero speed stabilisers on their previous yachts did not give enough stability in a swell and it soon became apparent that a monohull, however well-built, was not going to work. Alex Dreyfoos used his engineering skills alongside the expertise of A&R, and the result is a perfect cruising vessel for all weathers – and such is its stability that seasickness is no longer an issue.

What is a SWATH?

SWATH is an innovative hull concept for smooth service in rough seas. The idea was taken from the principle of semi-submersible offshore rigs, designed to provide a working platform with minimised motion in open sea.

The origins of a SWATH concept date back to the early 20th century but it was 1946 before a Canadian, Frederick Creed, was able to take out a British patent on his version. The US Navy became interested and carried out extensive design and test work in Hawaii, from which Dr Tom Lang obtained a patent for a Swath with additional stabilising fins. Just as importantly, the navy put a massive effort into design software, which later became available to purchase.

‘Without computer-aided design, a practical SWATH would hardly be possible,’ explains A&R’s technical director, Dr Klaas Spethmann.

The buoyancy of a SWATH ship is provided by its submerged torpedo-like bodies, connected by single or twin struts to the upper platform. The cross-section at sea surface level is minimised so very little of the vessel is exposed to the lifting forces of the waves. Abeking & Rasmussen has developed SWATH technology over the past 15 years, on the back of its long-standing experience in hydrodynamics, lightweight construction, special materials and leading-edge ship design.

With the know-how gained from full-scale service data of reference ships and special software tools A&R is now in a position to design and deliver SWATH ships under the brand name Swath@A&R.

The new generation

With the demands from potential clients for designers to provide ever-increasing volumes for guests, technical spaces and crew aboard superyachts it made sense to look at how these vessels can be adapted even further to deliver unsurpassed luxury living to include the integration of such items as a helicopter, submarine and toys carried on board, instead of using a mothership.

Some sceptics will disagree, of course: the design of the commercial SWATH is less than pretty, with a cumbersome Lego-like structure atop a flat base, mounted on what looks like a submarine-type structure to each side of a very prominent girth. It spans almost the same width as the length, with struts to hold the ship above the waves.

So why go for a SWATH? The keys are volume and stability, and for those that get seasick, it’s a revelation. We went aboard a 50m SWATH vessel at Cuxhaven in Germany that is used as a floating hotel for pilots working out at sea; she stays offshore 365 days a year. The technical spaces are incredible, cavernous even. The torpedo-style bulbs attached to the platform can swallow up to four engines (diesel electric propulsion gives the choice of operating at a greater range of speeds), generators, complete crew areas, storage spaces with incredible headroom, and because they are separate from the living quarters, vibration can be significantly reduced compared to a monohull.

The motionless ride is due to the fact that the vessel has almost no waterplane area that can be lifted by a wave. It gives the vessel horizontal stability in some of the worst weather, keeping it riding the seas with near zero roll and a very slow pitching motion over large waves.

Andrew Langton has been fascinated by alternative watercraft such as hydrofoils, cats, trimarans, and SWATHs since his university days, so when von Krause asked him to develop a SWATH superyacht, he jumped at the chance.

‘The SWATH concept is a huge platform that enables us to create just about any form of superstructure we like; the only limits are the overall weight of the vessel and the distribution of that weight,’ he says. ‘A&R gave us freedom to come up with a new concept. The buoyancy of the SWATH is set out in such a way that we need to have the superstructure much further forward than on a monohull. Our concept for the SWATH was to create the volume of an 80m-plus yacht inside a 62m vessel; the layout of the interior spaces had to be considered at the same time we were creating the exterior look.

‘As this vessel is radically different from a monohull superyacht, a different look was more appropriate than to make it look like a conventional yacht. The front of the superstructure is almost vertical and almost entirely glass, giving the accommodation panoramic, unobstructed views of the ocean, with floor to ceiling windows and access to private terraces for the owner and guests. From this very strong design aesthetic the superstructure tapers dramatically aft, which eliminates the boxy look of the commercial vessels and helps limit the weight distribution.

‘As the SWATH has effectively four hulls – a pair of submerged torpedo tubes and the struts penetrating the water surface – this gives you the feeling of flying above the water.

‘We integrated the huge platform into the superstructure to make the vessel look like one form, whereas the commercial Swath looks like a platform with a house on top.’

The volume Langton has created is so much more than on a large yacht, so had to be approached differently. Considering the rooms in a large monohull, Langton arranged them over four decks, keeping the stairways and lifts in the centre. One important area is the private owner’s deck with panoramic views and terraces all around.

The guest accommodation is designed looking forward with views to the sea, with the living spaces toward the aft decks. The huge windowless void underneath a commercial SWATH has been turned into a cinema, gym and spa area with sections of glass flooring .

‘The design connotations are endless,’ continues Langton, ‘with the only limit being weight. You can think out of the box with a SWATH and get creative.

‘We were already thinking about an observation room in the front of the torpedo hull, glass floor sections between the hulls, a helicopter pad , and we have planned a beach platform that drops from the main deck aft to the sea with a connecting staircase. It is even possible to integrate a paddle tennis court on main deck…

‘The most challenging part of the design is that the platform of the SWATH is a huge ungainly rectangle and we had to work around this to create a form that would pass as a superyacht and not look like a box.

‘The incredible beam also means that a fully certified helipad is easily achieved. Landing a helicopter is safer as the SWATH will not be rolling around like a monohull can do.

‘The main tenders are located on a lower section of the main deck aft. They are launched overboard to the stern by an overhead ‘A’ frame davit/crane integrated into the styling of the superstructure. The tenders can be launched and retrieved very quickly and safely even on the move – even with guests on board if they are feeling brave!’

The superstructure is radically different from Silver Cloud’s clean and simple lines. Langton felt he could more radical in his design of Abeking and Rasmussen’s private SWATH because there are no real limits. With his creativity, a blank canvas and ideas of what prospective clients want, he concludes, ‘You have to recognise this vessel as a superyacht, whilst appearing refreshingly different to conventional yachts.’

The one burning question is how much it costs to build a SWATH compared to a monohull superyacht. Till von Krause has an answer: ‘If you look at the comparable volume, it is about 10 per cent more than a monohull, but the interior is very similar.’

Abeking & Rasmussen SILVER CLOUD For Sale

Silver Cloud is a 134’6″ SWATH Yacht built by Abeking & Rasmussen in Germany. SWATH stands for Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull. The outstanding feature is smooth sailing in rough seas. A&R has perfected this design by building numerous SWATH ships for pilot service in the North Sea, an area known for very rough conditions. The 80′ SWATH pilot boats can safely put pilots on and off ships in seas to 20 feet.

The first SWATH yacht was designed and built for a trailblazing, experienced yachtsman so he could take his family and friends around the world in complete comfort and without the effect of seasickness. Silver Cloud has been around the world twice with owners and guests aboard for all open water crossings including transpacific and transatlantic. Silver Cloud was awarded the Technology Award at the prestigious World Superyacht Awards in 2009

The stability of this vessel is truly exceptional and you can view a video of a SWATH ship along side a much larger vessel in rough seas by visiting the web site www.yachtsilvercloud.com. Also, this web site will give you details and photographs of Silver Cloud from conception to completing her world cruises.

Silver Cloud has recently completed her DNV/GL inspection including the rebuild of her main engines and is ready for many more years of outstanding adventures to interesting places most yachts do not venture.

Silver Cloud is currently in a Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ).

Abeking & Rasmussen’s 63 metre SWATH yacht

By Adrian Prisca

Updated on August 31, 2017

swath yacht

Here’s a 63.4 meter long fabulous Swath (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) superyacht design penned down, developed and built by Abeking & Rasmussen (A&R) alongside Reymond Langton Design. At the base of the Swath concept lies a pair of torpedo-shaped submarine hulls which both lie under the water surface, permanently. The two are tied to the yacht via two narrow struts.

An interesting fact about this superyacht is that the cross-section region at the surface of the sea is around a sixth of a comparable size superyacht, therefore only a small part of the ship is actually exposed to the lifting forces exerted by the waves, while 5 sixths of the flotation is bore by the submarine hulls.

This allows even those suffering from seasickness to get onboard the superyacht, as, due to the reduced contact area between the ocean and the hull, Swath superyachts are dramatically less affected by the motion of the sea – physicists call this lower vertical acceleration.

The beam of the yacht further increases its stability, which results in being almost double the one of a traditional yacht of this massive size. The beam alone measures 24.5 meters in length, allowing for almost palatial interiors. A disadvantage of the yacht is that its twin hulls come with no interior guest space, but this is compensated by the huge space on the decks above.

swath yacht

The main deck houses four double cabins, lined up in the bow of the yacht and ending with a fore facing private balcony. A fifth double cabin can be found behind the fore cabins, which, even though it doesn’t boast with such exceptional luxury, still features breathtaking views through expansive windows. In addition, the main deck also provides a lavish gym and an entrance lobby, also usable as a secondary saloon, in case the standard levels of accommodation get surpassed.

The area which on regular yachts serves as the main deck, here consists of a central galley and accommodation for the crew, fully separated from the guest areas. The dining area and the main saloon will be located on the bridge deck, both opening up towards a massive aft guest deck, tied to the superyacht’s private helipad.

Furthermore, the owner will be gifted with his own private deck above the bridge, including a fore-facing cabin, private saloon aft alongside his and hers bathrooms. The highest deck of the boat, the sundeck, boasts with a lounge area, sunpads and a magnificent Jacuzzi.

The new 63m SWATH Explorer Yacht by Abeking & Rasmussen features a neatly horizontal deck at all times! Thanks to the small waterplane area exposed to the surface waves, a SWATH-ship is not ‘thrown to the side’ or ‘falling into the hole between the waves’ crests’ like a monohull or a conventional catamaran. The rolling and pitching angles are dramatically smaller.

This vessel, such as the new Explorer yacht SWATH 63m, can be compared to a filter, which reacts only with smooth heaving motions (low acceleration level) to the various surface wave patterns. The SWATH provides a sensationally stable platform for her guests’ transport and dinner cruises (… without bolted tables and sliding glasses!).

In addition to her great stability and spectacular looks, the new SWATH explorer yacht boasts 63,40 metres (208 feet), has a beam of 24,5 metres (80 feet) and a draft of 6 metres (19,50 feet).

SWATH stands for ‘Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull’, an innovative concept for smooth service in rough seas. The buoyancy of a SWATH ship is provided by two submarine hulls connected to the upper platform by twin narrow struts from each of the submarine hulls, as shown in the image below. The cross-sectional area at the sea surface is approximately 1/6 that of a comparable size yacht and thus only a minimum part of the ship is exposed to the lifting forces of the waves while 5/6 of the buoyancy is on the submarine hulls. Additional stability is provided by the SWATH’s broad beam which is twice that of a comparable yacht and by four large stabilizers controlled by a sophisticated computer system. The idea of SWATH was taken from the principle of semi-submersible offshore rigs, which are designed to provide a working platform with minimized motions in open seas.  As scuba divers and submariners will attest, one needs to be only slightly under the surface of the sea to be in a calm environment regardless of conditions on the sea surface.

2024 STABILITY 66 ULTRA LIGHT SOLAR SWATH CATAMARAN

Introducing 2024 stability 66 swath yacht.

SWATH YACHTS introduces Stability 66 Ultra light three hulls in one design HYDROFOIL / WAVE PIERCING / SWATH Mode, with an unparalleled level of fuel efficiency, comfort and stability. Our three hulls in one design is a combination of advanced ultra silent solar powered, military technology and luxury. You now have a yacht design that opens up the potential for yacht ownership to 90% of the population who get seasick, according to CDC estimates.

Stability 66

This is more than just another fancy power catamaran. It is a hybrid Solar electric, turbo Diesel vessel that transforms from Hydrofoil to Wave piercing catamaran to SWATH in a matter of minutes. The lower twin hulls submerge about a 18 inch from the original water level making the vessel heavier and very seaworthy as a much as a larger vessel. At this point since the lower twin hulls are now under water, waves can easily pass through the hull limiting side to side jarring (roll) and dangerous upward motion (pitch).

On the other hand, if there are light seas and want to arrive to your destination faster you can raise the hulls from a SWATH position to an 18-inch draft with wave piercing capability, somewhat unheard of in any SWATH in production today. At the same time, it becomes Ultra lightweight needing smaller engines, making it truly fuel-efficient. Stability 66 can cruise at 8 mph getting 4.0 mpg or 20 mph getting 1.8 mpg. Want to go somewhere quicker? With our optional Hydrofoil system coupled with twin Yanmar  6LY440 turbo diesel engines and 100 Kilowatt electric motors the speed tops around 43 mph. The high efficiency and lightweight of this vessel coupled with Hydrofoil system, advanced Solar power electric motors, alone will allow you to cruise ultra silently at 16 mph as long as there is sunshine. Add-on option to the existing turbo diesel powered configuration.

What's the Use of Having a Luxury Interior if the Seas Around You Are Rough?

Stability 66 can please the demanding yachtsman and his seasick clients, friends and/or family. This 1000+ sq. ft. house boat like interior allows for one master Stateroom and it’s huge bathroom, three staterooms with two communicating interchangeable bathrooms, a captain quarters and accommodation for up to 2 crew members and their shared crew bathroom. The spacious salon with 2 sofa sleepers can accommodate 4 more guest and wall-to-wall glass windows for a beautiful panorama. An adjacent fully equipped home like galley that has an enormous pantry and storage area and two full size fridge/freezer combos. The state-of-the-art helm station has good docking visibility. A 450 sq. ft. upper sun deck and fly bridge offer a perfect setting and ideal place to have the best sky bar for a one of a kind exceptional party.

Two Level Elevator

As a diving platform, the elevator makes dealing with a scuba tank and weight belt easy. Instead of using your energy to climb a ladder with your weight belt and tank, the elevator submerges two feet below the water so you can float on and then be lifted to deck level or flybridge level.

The Stability 66 it has been designed to be unsinkable. The vessel has 8 water tight separate sealed compartments all equipped with pumps. Even with most of its compartments damaged, the vessel will still get you home. Even if all compartments are compromised, it will not sink.

Safety features not normally available on other vessels include system redundancy. The port and starboard engines are totally separate systems with their own fuel tanks, batteries and electrical loads. If a fault occurred that caused the port batteries to discharge, you can temporarily link the starboard to the port system and recharge the batteries. The normal diesel reliability is enhanced because they are totally isolated from each other. Therefore, the chance of losing both engines is quite remote.

The vessel runs level, not bow up. There are no stairs to negotiate because everything is on one level and of course the vessel is stable in the SWATH operating mode. This makes walking on the vessel relatively safe. There are no exposed propellers, so you are safe if you are in the water and someone starts the engines by mistake.

Fire is always a more frightening experience on the water, especially if you are trapped on the vessel. The structural material of the Stability 66 is non-flammable.

However, if you add burning fuel, the heat will decompose the material. An optional fire suppression system is available for the engine compartments. This system automatically shuts off the diesel fuel and extinguishes the fire.

"Lose The Rock & Role"

Leading manufacturer of SWATH boats for leisure and commercial use

About SWATH

What is a swath boat, why swath is the future of boat design.

A Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull, better known by the acronym SWATH, is a twin-hull ship design that minimizes hull cross section area at the sea's surface. Minimizing the boats volume near the surface area of the sea, where wave energy is located, maximizes a vessel's stability, even in high seas and at high speeds. The bulk of the displacement necessary to keep the ship afloat is located beneath the waves, where it is less affected by wave action. Wave excitation drops exponentially as depth increases, so wave action normally does not affect a submerged submarine at all. Placing the majority of a ship's displacement under the waves is similar in concept to creating a ship that rides atop twin submarines.

The twin-hull design provides a stable platform and large, broad decks. Compared with conventional catamarans, SWATH boats have less wave drag, they are less susceptible to wave motion. The design building of SWATH vessels is also considerably more complex due to the structural complexities inherent to the design. Making SWATH vessels the preserve of oceanographic  institutes and the worlds navy's. Our revolutionary modular design combined with advances in composite materials and hydraulic propulsion now mean SWATH is a viable alternative for leisure boats and coastal commercial vessels.

Water resources, landmarks and tourism, major mountains, mount narodnaya, mount zaschita, mount neroyka, the pyramid mountain, samarovskaya mountain, ski and sports facilities, protected sites, reserves, national and natural parks, rivers and lakes, major cities, khanty-mansiysk.

The Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area – Yugra (KhMAO) is located in the central part of the West Siberian Plain, stretching from west to east from the Ural Range to the Ob-Yenisei Watershed. The vast areas of this plain, as well as the Lower Priob region, are considered one of the most recently inhabited areas.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area

The Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area (KhMAO) was established in 1930. Its name comes from two main northern indigenous peoples – the Khanty and the Mansi. From 1944 it was legally part of the Tyumen Region , but in 1993 the Area received autonomy and became a full-fledged territorial entity of the Russian Federation. It is a part of the Urals Federal District. The administrative centre is the city of Khanty-Mansiysk , whereas the largest city is Surgut. The word Yugra was introduced to the name of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area in 2003 to pay tribute to the old name used by the locals to call the territories lying beyond the North Urals.

The KhMAO borders the Komi Republic in the north-west, the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District in the north, the Krasnoyarsk Area and the Tomsk Region in the east and south-east, the Tyumen Region in the south and the Sverdlovsk Region in the south-west.

The area of the territory is 534,801 sq.km, the length from north to south is 800 km, from west to east is 1400 km. The population of this huge territory is 1,674,676 people as of 2020, which is the same amount as people living in Barcelona or Munich.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area

The main part of the territory is a huge, poorly dissected plain where absolute elevation marks rarely exceed 200 meters above sea level. The western part of the KhMAO territory is characterized by low and middle mountainous terrains with some Alpine relief featured in the Subpolar Urals. Here are ridges and spurs of the mountain system of the North Urals and the Subpolar Urals. The maximum absolute elevations are on the border with the Komi Republic . Mount Narodnaya (1,895m) is the highest peak.

More than 800 species of higher plants grow in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area . Almost the entire territory is covered by taiga forests that occupy about 52% of the area. Spruce, fir, pine, cedar, larch, birch, alder grow here. In the northern parts of the area, the composition of the vegetation is greatly influenced by perennial permafrost. Light lichen grasslands which are used as deer pastures are widespread there. Tundra dominates in the mountainous and hilly areas. River floodplains and lowlands are characterized by meadow vegetation, the so-called water meadows. High floodplains of large rivers are mainly covered with woods that mainly feature willows, birches and aspens. Forests and swamps are rich in berries and various valuable plants, most of which are used in traditional indigenous medicine.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area

The animal world is typical for the Russian taiga zone. There are 369 species of vertebrates. Mammals are represented by 60 species (28 of them are commercial species). The most common and valuable of them are wild reindeer, elk, fox, sable, fox, squirrel, marten, ermine, Siberian weasel, polecat, mink, weasel, otter, hare and others. Wolverine and West Siberian river beaver are included in the Red Book of Russia.

There are 256 bird species in the region, including 206 sedentary and nesting species. Some rare bird species are listed in the Red Book. There are 42 species of fish in rivers and lakes. Of these, 19 species are commercial, among them are starlet sturgeon, lelema, muksun (whitefish), pelyad, chir, lake herring, wader, tugun, freshwater cod, pike, ide, roach, bream, fir, perch, ruff, golden and silver crucian carp, carp (carp is grown in the cooling ponds of the Surgutskaya and Nizhnevartovskaya hydroelectric plants). Sturgeon is listed in the Red Book. There is an abundance of mosquitoes and gnats in the area, the greatest activity of which is in the second half of summer.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Reindeer

Yugra can boast of over 2 thousand large and small rivers, the total length of which is 172,000 km. The main rivers are the Ob (3,650 km), the Irtysh (3,580 km). These are some of the largest rivers in Russia. Other significant rivers include the tributaries of the Ob (the Vakh, Agan, Tromyogan, Bolshoy Yugan, Lyamin, Pim, Bolshoy Salym, Nazym, Severnaya Sosva, Kazym rivers), the tributary of the Irtysh (the Konda River) and the Sogom River. Ten rivers are over 500 km long. All the Yugra rivers with the exception of the rivers in the Ural part of the region are characterized by rather slow currents, gentle slopes, some surge wave phenomena, spring and summer floods. The Ob River basin extends over a distance of 700-200 km from the mouths of its tributaries. Such abundance of water facilitates the appearance of floodplain swamps and seasonal lakes.

The region's swamps are predominantly of the upper and transitional type. Those water basins occupy about a third of the region. About 290,000 lakes with the area of more than 1 ha are surrounded by swamps and forests. The largest lakes are Tursuntsky Tuman, Levushinsky Tuman, Vandemtor and Trmemtor. The deepest lakes are Kintus (48 m) and Syrky Sor (42 m). However, most of the lakes (about 90%) are modest and quite small and have no surface runoff.

The area is rich in resources of fresh, mineral and thermal underground waters, which are still insignificantly used.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. River

The climate is moderately continental. Winters are harsh, snowy and long, and summers are short and relatively warm. The territory is protected from the west by the Ural Mountains but its openness from the north has a significant impact on the climate formation because cold air masses from the Arctic freely penetrate the area. The flat character of the terrain with a large number of rivers, lakes and swamps also has its impact. Most of the precipitation falls during the warm seasons. But even with a small amount of precipitation, their evaporation is very low, which as a result contributes to the formation of the zone of excessive moisture throughout the Yugra. The snow cover is stable from late October to early May, its height varies from 50 to 80 cm. The region is characterized by a rapid change of weather conditions, especially in transitional seasons (autumn and spring), as well as during the day. Late spring and early autumn frosts are rather frequent and can happen even until mid-June. Average January temperatures range from -18ºC to -24ºC (0 F to -11 F) and can reach -60ºC to -62ºC (-76 F to -80 F) when the northern cold air masses break through. The average temperature in July, the warmest month of the year, ranges from +15ºC to +20ºC (+59 F to +68 F) and on very rare days can reach a maximum temperature of +36ºC (+97 F). The prevailing wind direction is north in summer and south in winter.

The weather in the mountains is quite changeable and cool even in summer. The best time to visit the region's mountains is between July and mid-August.

The Yugra of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area has a huge natural resource potential. These are oil and gas deposits, forests, gold and iron ore deposits, as well as bauxites, copper, zinc, lead, niobium, tantalum, brown and hard coal deposits, rock crystal, quartz and piezo quartz, peat deposits, etc. The region has plenty of natural resources. In terms of natural gas reserves, the Yugra ranks second in the Russian Federation after the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District .

The industry is dominated by oil and gas production, power generation and processing industries, including woodworking except for pulp and paper production.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Pump-rocking

The Khanty-Mansi area has very developed tourism of all kinds. There is a modern infrastructure for cultural exploration as well as for active recreation.

Fans of sports and eco-friendly tourism will be able to conquer majestic mountains and raft down picturesque rivers, enjoy the beauty of nature in nature reserves and natural parks. The hills and mountains of this area open up endless opportunities for skiing and snowboarding.

The mountainous part of the Subpolar Urals located on the territory of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area is very beautiful. The highest peaks of the Ural Mountains are situated here.

Being the highest point of the whole Urals, Mount Narodnaya (1,895 m), also known as Naroda and Poenurr and translated as People's Mountain is territorially situated in the Subpolar Urals, on the border of the Yugra Area and the Komi Republic . It is the highest point in European Russia outside the Caucasus. This leads to its large topographic prominence of 1,772 metres (5,814 ft).

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Mount Narodnaya

The top of the mountain is half a kilometre from the border towards Yugra. As for the name of the mountain, scientists could not come to a common opinion for a long time, so there are two versions. According to one version, in the Soviet years, an expedition of pioneers gave the mountain a name in honour of the Soviet people - Narodnaya (the stress is on the second syllable). According to the other version, even before the arrival of the first Soviet tourists, the peak was named after the River Naroda (the stress is on the first syllable) flowing at the foot of the mountain. The Nenets peoples called the River Naroda Naro, which means a thicket or a dense forest, and the Mansi peoples called it Poengurr or Poen-urr, which translates as the top, or head. The maps used to refer to it as Mount Naroda or Mount Naroda-Iz. Nowadays, it appears everywhere as Narodnaya.

In the 1980s, someone set a bust of Lenin on the top of the mountain. Its remains can be found there to this day. There is one more symbolic relic there – some Orthodox believers erected a worship cross on top of Mount Narodnaya after a Procession of the Cross.

The slopes of the mountain are steeper in the north-east and south-west and there are many steep rocks on them. The south-eastern and northern parts of the mountain are more gentle but they are also covered with scree. Be vigilant and careful when climbing! On the slopes of the mountain, there are many not only boulders but also caverns filled with clear water as well as ice. There are glaciers and snowfields. From the north-eastern part of the mountain, you can observe Lake Blue near which tourists and travellers like to make bivouacs.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Mount Narodnaya

Mesmerizing with its beauty and inaccessibility, it attracts many tourists and fans of active recreation. This majestic mountain is quite remote from the settlements, so getting to it is not an easy task. The mountain is located in the Yugyd Va National Park , so it is necessary to register in advance and get a visit permit from the park administration. How to get to the park administration and get a permit, read the article on the Yugyd Va National Park .

Mountain Zaschita (1,808 m) is the second-highest peak in the Ural Mountains, after Mount Narodnaya . Mysteriously, the name of the mountain, which roughly translates as Defense or Protection Mount, does not correlate in any way with the Mansi names of the nearby mountains and rivers. The origin of the name is unknown. There are some speculations but we will consider just one of them. On the map of the Northern Urals which was made by the Hungarian researcher Reguli the closest peak to Mount Narodnaya was called gnetying olu. Its location coincides with that of the present-day Mount Zaschita . The name gnetying olu in the Mansi can be deciphered as a mountain on which there is some help from ice. The mountain is believed to protect deer grazing on glaciers from mosquitoes. So, early topographers called the mountain more briefly – Mount Defense. Indeed, the slopes of this mountain are covered with a lot of snow and glaciers (the Yugra, Naroda, Kosyu, Hobyu glaciers and others). And it is here that the Mansi shepherds bring their deer which can rest on glaciers and snow. Summarizing all the above, we can say that Zaschita Mount is to some extent protection for deer from mosquitoes. The very name Zaschita appeared on maps with the beginning of hiking tours in the Subpolar Urals.

Mount Neroyka (1,645 m) is 100 km from Neroyka village, the closest tourist base to this peak. In the 1950s, people who were engaged in quartz mining near the mountain worked and lived in this base. Later, a gravel road was built from the village of Saranpaul to the mountain for large-scale development of the quartz deposit. In recent years, the road has not been much used and is practically not cleaned from snow in winter. There has been a plant built 20 km down from the mountain for primary processing of quartz with the use of nanotechnologies. There is an annual big camping event near the mountain. It is organized by the Tourism Department of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area. You can have a 1-hour helicopter ride to the mountain from the village of Saranpaul. Should you wish to fly from the city of Khanty-Mansiysk , be prepared to fly over the taiga for 2.5-3 hours.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Mount Neroyka

Quite inquisitive tourists happened to discover, by a lucky chance, a Pyramid similar to that of Cheops but four times bigger. It is located on the territory of the Narodo-Ityinsky Ridge. The closest to the pyramid is the village of Saranpaul. The sizes of the found pyramid are as follows: the height is 774 m, in comparison to the Egyptian pyramid which is 147 m; the length of a lateral edge is 230 m whereas the Egyptian pyramid is 1 km. The pyramid is located precisely according to the cardinal directions, there is not a single degree deviation at that. The origin of the pyramid is unknown, scientists are still making assumptions. No traces of human activity were found near the pyramid. The only way to get here at this time is by helicopter.

Samarovskaya Mountain is another wonder that is baffling many people. It is dividing the city of Khanty-Mansiysk into northern and southern parts. Few now living residents know that in the old days the highest part of the modern city used to bear a plural name of the Samarovsky Mountains among which there were Mount Palenina, Komissarskaya, Miroslavskaya, Filinova, and Romanova. Originally, there was a village called Samarovo amidst these mountains. Until now, many issues bewilder both residents and scientists. How could a mountain form in the middle of the West Siberian Plain? What is inside it? Won't the weight of the buildings erected on the top of the mountain affect its height? The uniqueness of Samarovskaya Mountain is that it consists of numerous large stones, boulders, rocks that are absolutely foreign to this area. Scientists have not yet come to a consensus on the mountain’s origin.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area.

The Yugra is very famous for its ski resorts, the main of which are:

  • The Cedar Ravine ski resort (Surgut city, Naberezhny Ave. 39/1)
  • Three Mountains (Trekhgorie) ski resort (30 km from Nizhnevartovsk, Ermakovsky settlement)
  • Stone Cape (Kamenniy Mys) ski resort (near the city of Surgut)
  • Pine Urman ski resort ( Khanty-Mansiysk , Sportivnaya Str., 24)

The far-away lands of the Yugra are the blessed sanctuaries for many animals as the area is rather hostile to a human There are reserves, natural parks, wildlife sanctuaries here that aim to protect the national treasures of the lands. Having visited these regions once, you would crave for coming back again and again to feel that unique sense of unity with nature, to forget about the urban fuss and and hustles whatsoever. The harsh but beautiful nature of this extraordinary area leaves an indelible trace in the soul of every person.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Samarovsky outlier. Archeopark

On the territory of the district there are 25 specially protected natural areas, the most famous of them are:

  • The reserves are two: the Malaya Sosva Reserve and the Yugan Reserve, the latter was established in 1982 as the largest reserve of taiga landscapes. The purpose of the reserves was to study unobtrusively and carefully preserve the endemic flora and fauna without disturbing natural processes. Hunting and economic activities are prohibited here, which is important for the preservation of natural ecosystems.
  • The natural parks are the Samarovsky Chugas Nature Park, the Siberian Sloping Hills (Uvaly), the Numto (also called Lake Numto), and the Kondinskie Lakes.

These reserves and natural parks offer tourists their own excursion programs to make visiting their territory much more enjoyable and educational.

The Samarovsky Chugas Nature Park is located in the center of Khanty-Mansiysk , on a small hill between the Ob and Irtysh rivers.

The territory of the Siberian Sloping Hills (Uvaly) natural park is 350 km away from the city of Khanty-Mansiysk . You can get there by helicopter or by plane. The office of the park is located at 7a Pionerskaya Street, Nizhnevartovsk.

The Kondinskie Lakes Natural Park is located 380 km from Khanty-Mansiysk . Half of the park is covered with swamps, but there is also a recreational area. There you can rest, swim, do some amateur fishing, picking berries (cowberries, cranberries) and mushrooms is permitted. There is only one independent walking route here, it runs for 3 km in the deep forest. It is a cool place for kids since the park is equipped with sports grounds, a pool and a small zoo where the kids can interact with brown bear cubs. What else, try the TaiPark, it is a rope course running at the height of 2.5 meters, having 15 stages, the full length is 125 meters. There is an opportunity to order water walking tours in the town of Sovetsky, which can be reached by train from Khanty-Mansiysk .

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Kondinskie Lakes

The Numto Nature Park is located almost in the center of the West Siberian Plain, in the Beloyarsk district of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area, 300 km from the city of Surgut and 200 km from the town of Beloyarsk. It is located on the border of Yugra and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area. The administration of the park is located at 2, Beloyarsky micro-district, 4a. The territory of the natural park is a treasure trove of archaeological and ethnocultural monuments. As of today, there have been discovered 20 architectural monuments, including fortified and not fortified settlements, places of worship abandoned by the peoples who lived here from the Stone Age to almost the present day. Researchers have also found 65 monuments of ethnic value, the main of which are worship objects, sacred places and cemeteries.

The Malaya Sosva Reserve includes several subordinated territories and sanctuaries, including Lake Ranghe-Tour. The reserve offers a 4-km walking guided route that gets the visitors introduced to the typical features and characteristics of flora and fauna of the region. The route is called Bear Trail and you can spot bears there (don’t come close though, we’ve already written how to behave if you meet a bear in the wild). Also, you will see the River Malaya Sosva, some marshes, ancient cultural monuments and other nice sights. Permission to visit the reserve can be obtained from the administration of the reserve at Lenina Str. 46, town Sovetskiy.

As to the Yugan Nature Reserve , it is inaccessible to common hikers who are afraid of flying since there are no roads to it. The only way to get there is taking a helicopter ride. You also must obtain a permit in the administration of the reserve, go accompanied by employees of the reserve, and only on special transport of the reserve (motorboat, snowmobile). The central manor of the Reserve and the administration are located in the village of Ugut. To get to this village, you should first go to the town of Surgut, then go to the town of Pyt-Yakh, and from it there is a road to the village of Ugut. It is about 100 km from Ugut to the southern border of the reserve i, and another 25 km to the nearest cordon. The administration works from Monday to Friday. You can request a permit via mail at [email protected] , order a guided tour at [email protected]

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Yugan Nature Reserve

The Yugra lands are heaven for water sports aficionados. They can have some awesome fishing or go rafting along such rivers as: the river Naroda, the Deep Sabun, etc.

The Naroda River is 140 km long. It is the left tributary of the Manya River located in the Ob River basin. The river has its origin on the south-western slope of Mount Narodnaya . It is a mountain-taiga river with rapids, swifts, numerous rolls, which attracts interest among water tourists. However, it is usually not rafted very often.

The Deep Sabun River flows through the territory of the Siberian Sloping Hills Nature Park. The park has developed multi-day water routes. It is possible to raft along the river in summer and to go skiing along it in winter.

The Kondinskie Lakes are a system of lakes along the left bank of the Konda River. The largest lake is the Arantur, with pine forests on the northern side and sandy beaches well equipped for a nice relaxing me-time. The water heats up well in summer. The small river Okunevaya and the river Maly Akh flow into the lake. The Maly Akh comes in on the west side and connects lake Arantur with Lake Pon-Tour. This lake is the richest in fish, and there is also a parking lot for fishermen here. The streams connect Pon-Tour with small lakes Krugloe and Lopukhovoye. When you look at Lopukhovoe lake, you feel as if you have found yourself in a fabulous place: more than half of its surface is covered with white lilies, as well as yellow flowers of the water-beans. Then the river Big Akh, which flows into the river Konda, connects all the lakes into a single system. Along the river there are many archeological monuments such as forts and settlements which have paths to them. The southernmost lake of the park is Ranghe-Tour.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Rivers and Lakes

Yugra is not the easiest destination and not the most accessible, but the effort is well worth it. You should first get to the capital of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area – the city of Khanty-Mansiysk either by air or by train.

Khanty-Mansiysk is based on the premises of the former village Samarovo founded in 1582. It used to be the territory of the Khanty people and a pit stop for coachmen who rode their wagons across the country. The village was founded by Russian Count Samara, thus the name Samarovo. The modern city actually began to develop in 1930 because amidst the Siberian taiga there finally started to appear stone houses on the high bank of the Irtysh River. In 1940, the village was renamed into Khanty-Mansiysk by the name of the peoples living on this territory – the Khanty and the Mansi, and in 1950 it received the status of a town.

Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia

The city has several attractions. Mount Samarovskaya is probably the biggest natural and scientific wonder. It divides the city in two parts and causes many concerns for urban developers who always wonder whether this mountain can move making the buildings slide or even sink in.

Another beauty is the century-old cedar grove that is within the city limits. The grove is a part of the natural park Samarovsky Chugas. The word chugas in the language of the Khanty means a lonely hill in the low river floodplain.

Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia

The park is one of the main attractions of the city, it hosts an open-air ethnographic museum called the Torum Maa, a cultural and tourist complex called Archaeopark, a biathlon center. Kids and adults, nature lovers and fans of culture love this place dearly.

A memorial sign to Yugra's discoverers is installed on top of the Samarovsky Chugas. It is a tall stele pyramid divided into three portions. On the lower level, there is a restaurant, on the second level is a small museum, and on the third level there is an observation deck, 40 m above the ground, with a magnificent view of the Irtysh River and the river port. The pyramid is decorated by the bas-relief depicting the discoverers of the region, from the 16th-century Count Samara to the geologists of the 20th century.

Another trademark of Khanty-Mansiysk is the State Museum of Nature and Man. The museum hosts a gallery and a workshop of a famous artist G. Rayshev.

The city has a lot of small monuments generously spread around the city. There is the Khanty family resting on a camp, this monument is near the airport building. You can take a pic at the Golden Tambourine located at the intersection of Gagarin Street and Mira Street. Connoisseurs of culture should also visit the Sun – the Theatre of Ob-Ugrian Peoples, it is the world's first professional theatre of Khanty and Mansi peoples. And if you are travelling with kids, the Khanty-Mansiysk Puppet Theatre is a must-visit. In the period from May to October, you can take a boat ride to the confluence of two rivers – the Ob and the Irtysh. Yugra Service Co. operates such cruises, you can find more information locally at their address Tobolsk Trakt street 4, Khanty-Mansiysk .

Storms Threaten Mediterranean From Sicily to Ionian Sea Islands

swath yacht

Thunderstorms are forecast across the Mediterranean from Corfu to Sicily, where a luxury yacht sank off the coast on Monday after being struck by a waterspout, a form of tornado.

Orange storms alerts are in place for a swath of Italy, including Calabria and Puglia, but also further north along the Adriatic coast. Six people including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch are missing after the yacht named Bayesian sank near Porticello in Sicily.

Italy is struck by about 100 tornadoes a year, according to AtmosphericG2, a company that provides weather data to traders. On average, just over 70 are “marine spouts,” occurring off the coast, with another 30 onshore.

Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of heat waves, triggering extreme weather events from violent storms to wildfires. Countries around the Mediterranean Sea — which reached a record average temperature last week — are some of the most severely impacted as fossil fuel emissions warm the planet.

Record rain triggered a danger alert last week on the Spanish island of Menorca, while more than a dozen boats were driven on to the coast of Formentera as a heat wave gave way to violent storms.

Heat warnings are still in place across southern Spain, with temperatures climbing as high as 40C (104F). Red alerts for heat also cover parts of Romania.

On Tuesday, heavy rain and intense storms are forecast for northern Greece, including the city of Thessaloniki, as well as the Ionian Sea islands. A large waterspout was seen off the coast of Zakynthos on Monday.

Parts of the Balkans are also under warnings for severe thunderstorms on Tuesday.

At the same time, Athens and the surrounding Attica region face a high risk of wildfires, along with most of Peloponnese and the islands of Rhodes, Crete and Evia. There were 25 blazes in 24 hours to 6:30 p.m. on Monday.

Later on Tuesday, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will preside over a meeting in Penteli north of Athens to discuss measures for managing and restoring those areas east and north of the capital that were devastated by a huge fire last week.

Following initial inspections, 55 homes will need to be demolished, while 91 require rebuilding after being damaged by the blaze.

The wildfire risks aren’t confined to southern Europe. By Thursday, there will be an extreme wildfire danger across parts of the UK, including London, according to the Copernicus climate change service.

Nyc real estate giant who ghosted, lied to low income tenants exposed by undercover ‘testers’: suit.

A New York City real estate company was exposed by undercover “testers” for blocking low-income renters by lying to them — or even ghosting them, a new lawsuit claims.

The Parkoff Organization, owner of 4,000 apartments across the city, illegally tried to turn away testers posing as would-be renters who used housing vouchers — while offering apparently wealthy applicants unlisted units and even reduced rents, according to the suit.

“There is no valid or even rational reason for landlords and brokers to discriminate against people who use housing vouchers,” said Elizabeth Grossman, executive director and general counsel for the Fair Housing Justice Center, which brought the case against Parkoff.

swath yacht

Trained testers posed as would-be renters last year to uncover the alleged tactics — sometimes claiming high incomes and other times saying they would use be covering living costs using government-issued housing vouchers.

Parkoff — which previously faced two discrimination lawsuits and consent decrees in 1991 and 2016, taccording to the suit — allegedly responded very differently after learning the source of the would-be renters’ incomes, the lawsuit alleged.

One tester claiming a $2,300 voucher through the city’s CityFHEPs program was discouraged from applying for a 500-square-foot apartment listed for $1,860 — with a Parkoff broker saying the city might not approve the rental because of building violations, the suit said.

The broker ghosted the applicant, who asked if there were other units available in that range, according to the allegations. But the same broker showed a high-income tester the apartment the next day — and offered two other units in a Seaman Avenue building with even lower rents and no existing violations, according to the suit.

The broker “made clear through statements and his actions that he did not like working with voucher holders, even in connection with a building that did not have any known violations,” according to the lawsuit.

Hours after one voucher tester was allegedly told by another broker there were no units available in a Bronx building, a high-income tester was offered to view six units in buildings on Henry Hudson Parkway East and Netherland Avenue, all with rents below the tester’s voucher amount.

One broker even managed to show an Upper East Side studio on East 76th Street to a pair of testers at the same time. After the viewing, the voucher tester was ghosted but the high-income tester was quickly sent an application.

Blocks away, a broker told a voucher tester that two listed units on York Avenue had just received applications, but told a high-income tester the next day that the units were still available.

Attorney Heather Gregorio, who is helping to represent the Fair Housing Justice Center in their suit, praised the work of the testers.

“Individuals with vouchers are often turned away or put off by dozens and dozens of real estate agents and landlords,” Gregorio said. “Testing is at times the only way to uncover and prove that potential tenants would have been treated differently if they did not have vouchers.”

Voucher holders cover a wide swath of New Yorkers and include many families, said Gregorio.

Since many voucher holders are people of color, “source of income discrimination is thus closely tied to and often a proxy for racial and other forms of discrimination,” she said.

Parkoff did not respond to a message left with their office by time of publication.

Grossman said the whole point of vouchers is to provide landlords with “guaranteed rent payments.”

“We saw this during the early days of the pandemic, when so many tenants lost their jobs and could not pay their rent,” she said. “And landlords benefited significantly from reliable rent payments on behalf of voucher holders.”

History of Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug - Yugra

Yugra is the historical homeland of the Ob-Ugric peoples: Khanty, Mansi, Nenets, and Selkup. They were engaged in hunting, fishing, cattle breeding. After the Turkic peoples pushed them from south to north, these peoples had to apply their skills in more severe conditions. It is at this new location Ugrians began to domesticate deer.

In the first half of the second millennium AD, the main features of the material and spiritual culture of Khanty, Mansi and forest Nenets were formed. It is believed that since then they have not undergone major changes. Since the second half of the 13th century, a new factor in the development of the region was its entry into the Golden Horde.

At the end of the 14th century, the collapse of the Golden Horde led to the emergence of a separate Tyumen Khanate. In 1495, the Siberian Khanate appeared. At that time the basic principles of political, administrative and socio-economic organization of this territory were developed. The region was called Ugra or Yugra.

More historical facts…

The region became part of Russia in the end of the 16th century. From the middle of the 18th century, this region became a place of exile for criminals. December 10, 1930, Ostyako-Vogul national okrug was formed with the center in the settlement of Samarovo. Construction of a new center began 5 km away from it. In February 1932, the new center of the region was named Ostyako-Vogulsk.

In 1934, the first steps to find oil and natural gas in the region were taken. October 23, 1940, Ostyko-Vogul national okrug was renamed Khanty-Mansi national okrug and Ostyko-Vogulsk was renamed Khanty-Mansiysk. August 14, 1944, the region became part of Tyumen Oblast. On January 27, 1950, Khanty-Mansiysk became a city.

On September 21, 1953, in Berezovo, the first natural gas in Western Siberia was produced. On June 23, 1960, the first oil in Western Siberia was discovered near Shaim. This was followed by the discovery of many other oil and natural gas fields. Along with the industrial exploitation of oil and gas fields, the timber industry developed rapidly.

By the end of the 20th century, under the influence of demographic and socio-economic developments the Khanty-Mansi region in fact lost its national basis. On July 25, 2003, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug was renamed Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug - Yugra.

Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug - Yugra - Features

The name of the region is associated with the self-names of the two main groups of northern peoples - Khanty and Mansi. In the Middle Ages, the word “Yugra” was used to refer to peoples and lands beyond the Northern Urals.

This region, located in the middle of Russia, occupies the central part of the West Siberian Plain. Its territory stretches from west to east for almost 1,400 km, from north to south for 900 km. The area of the region is comparable to France or Ukraine.

The climate is temperate continental characterized by rapid change of weather especially in spring and autumn. Winters are long, snowy and cold with frosts below minus 30 degrees Celsius. Summers are short and warm. From the west this region is protected by the Ural mountains, from the north it is open to cold arctic air.

The highest points of the region are Mount Narodnaya (1,895 m) in the Polar Urals and Mount Pedy (1,010 m) in the Northern Urals. Two major rivers flow in Khanty-Mansi autonomous okrug: the Ob (3,650 km) and its tributary the Irtysh (3,580 km). About 30% of the territory is covered by swamps. This region is very rich in oil and natural gas. The largest oil and natural gas fields are Samotlorskoye, Fedorovskoye, Mamontovskoye, Priobskoye. There are also deposits of gold, coal, iron ore, copper, zinc, lead and other mineral resources.

The climate is not favorable for agriculture. Most of the agricultural products and foodstuffs is brought from other Russian regions. Waterways and railways are the main shipping ways. The total length of the pipeline network is 107,000 km.

About 60% of Russian oil is produced in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug - Yugra. In total, more than 10 billion tons of oil were produced here. The total number of oil and natural gas fields discovered is 475. In the coming decades, the Khanty-Mansi region will remain the main resource base of hydrocarbons in Russia.

The Public Investment Fund’s global pullback

Hilco Global aims to become a merchant bank

Bronfman gatecrashes Paramount-Skydance deal

Saudi wealth fund’s easy money era comes to an end

The pace of spending and dealmaking that accompanied Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ’s rise to power made Saudi Arabia a magnet for financiers and dealmakers.

But it was never going to be sustainable, and at some point the kingdom was going to have to take stock of how it was deploying its petrodollars.

The moment has arrived , bankers say, as Riyadh manages falling oil revenues due to production cuts and softer prices, while at the same time facing huge financial commitments to meet Prince Mohammed’s highly ambitious domestic goals.

Much of the spending over the past decade has been led by the Public Investment Fund , the $925bn sovereign wealth fund that Prince Mohammed, or MBS, tasked with developing a swath of megaprojects in the kingdom and building up its overseas exposure.

But this year, the pace of international deals has slowed. The focus has instead shifted inwards, with the message to fund managers being that if you want new money, you have to be prepared to reinvest in the kingdom.

It doesn’t mean the world’s top oil exporter is going to stop spending: MBS has big ambitions in AI, and the PIF has incubated a plethora of new companies, including airline Riyadh Air, that will need to splash the cash to meet their goals.

Riyadh also wants to expand its mining portfolio and develop manufacturing. And the kingdom has a series of international events to prepare for, including the Asian Winter Games in 2029 and the 2034 Fifa football World Cup — it was the sole bidder for the latter.

But it does mean, for now at least, the PIF, which has the daunting task of financing and developing the domestic projects, is likely to be more strategic on where and how it spends. Don’t expect another headline- grabbing deal similar to the $45bn the PIF pumped into SoftBank ’s Vision Fund eight years ago.

The reality is the state investment funds across the oil-rich Gulf are being more selective as they mature and focus on sectors they deem strategic.

But of course, the PIF’s strategy can always change on the whims of one man — its chair, MBS.

Hilco Global’s merchant bank ambitions

For nearly four decades Hilco Global has built a name for itself in the world of bankruptcies and distressed investing.

The Chicago-based firm is the one to call if a company needs help valuing assets or liquidating its stuff. Now, it’s looking beyond that work, to a future as a merchant bank.

Jeffrey Hecktman , the company’s 70-year-old founder, has built a billion-dollar fortune by trafficking in unwanted pillows at Bed Bath & Beyond , obsolete baking pans from Twinkies maker Hostess , and even a polluted Bethlehem Steel mill.

As Hilco pivots to this new era, Hecktman plans to capitalise on the mountains of data he’s amassed through America’s most infamous corporate train wrecks, DD’s Amelia Pollard and Sujeet Indap report.

While the company has already dabbled in underwriting and investing, it now wants to make those banking services the centrepiece of its business . To do that, Hecktman is trying to secure a new infusion of capital, potentially by selling a stake in the firm.

He’s spent the past few months travelling the world, including to New York and London, as he courts potential investors. (Executives like to think of the company as what Goldman Sachs was 60-odd years ago.)

He’s not alone in this endeavour.

The firm made two star hires in the past year, bringing on David Kurtz , formerly a luminary at Lazard , and Jamie Sprayregen , who helped build Kirkland & Ellis into a bankruptcy powerhouse, to help usher the company into its merchant bank era.

Hilco’s ambitions are timely. There’s been a surge in recent years of private credit and asset-backed finance, a multitrillion-dollar industry that requires valuation of underlying collateral.

Edgar Bronfman gatecrashes Paramount deal

What do a crypto bro, a Gulf sheikh who owns an investment firm and the grandson of a Kazakh autocrat all have in common? They’re teaming up to go after Paramount Global .

Last month, the media company behind classics like The Godfather and Titanic had agreed a merger with Skydance Media , the film studio founded by billionaire David Ellison .

The race to acquire Paramount over the past several months has felt like a never-ending saga. When the group finally agreed a deal with Ellison’s firm in July, exhausted advisers and bankers sighed with relief.

But at the eleventh hour, another bid emerged: that of the former Warner Music chief executive Edgar Bronfman Jr .

He has raised $5.5bn for a last-minute Paramount offer, gatecrashing the previous deal with Skydance, DD’s James-Fontanella Khan and Eric Platt, and the FT’s Anna Nicolaou report.

His initial bid of $4.3bn on Monday night came just before the 45-day “go shop” period ended — when Paramount could consider other offers.

It’s an eclectic group behind Bronfman. He has secured a commitment from Fortress , which is majority owned by Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala investment arm.

And there are other backers including BC Partners Credit , film producer Steven Paul , crypto entrepreneur Brock Pierce and Nurali Aliyev , the tech investor and grandson of the autocratic former ruler of Kazakhstan.

Bronfman’s initial bid values National Amusements — the family holding company that has controlled Paramount for three decades — at $2.4bn including debt.

The bid also matches Skydance’s planned $1.5bn injection into Paramount, and would pay Ellison’s company $400mn to terminate its existing deal.

While the initial offer lacks clarity on how it would benefit Paramount’s non-voting shareholders, Bronfman plans to improve the bid in the coming days — likely to sweeten the deal for them.

Which will Paramount choose?

Citadel has hired Atte Lahtiranta as head of core engineering, according to a spokesperson. He was most recently the chief technology officer at Goldman Sachs and will begin his new post early next year.

Latham & Watkins has hired Leen Zaza as a partner in Riyadh, where she will work with the firm’s M&A and private equity practice. She previously worked for Khoshaim & Associates .

Rothschild & Co has closed its Miami office after opening it last year with Eric Hirschfield , who led the base, retiring, Bloomberg reports.
