In the early days of Catamaran Guru, catamaran experts, Stephen & Estelle Cockcroft kept their cruising kitty going by teaching American Sailing Association courses and offered liveaboard orientation experiences aboard their monohull and later their catamarans. Pointing out the excellence and safety issues with cats. I had a 43-foot one for 8 years and miss it a lot.

I've chartered big cats twice but I didn't know the trick to get the bow to pass through the wind easily until I took this course. That alone was worth the price of the course. Very cool!

Good for understanding the basics!

Sailing a cat is definitely different from sailing a monohull. This course walks you through the differences and prepares you for your first experience with a cat. That being said, it is not a substitute for hands on and time on task. You have to get on a cat and practice to become proficient at handling a cat both under sail and power.

As an experienced monohull sailor, I found this to be right on point. The maneuvering session was extremely helpful and the simulations instructive. The information about sail loads and dangerous situations was new to me: I am very glad I got to go through this before my charter.

And if there weren't enough advantages to sailing a catamaran here is another.

The mainsail traveler on a catamaran is significantly longer than on a cruising monohull. Thus you can take real advantage of this. The mainsail can now be adjusted in 2 different ways: using the traveler line or by adjusting the mainsheet.

When sailing close hauled on a catamaran in heavier air, move the traveler upwind (on the opposite side of the sail) and let off on the main sheet. This will allow the boom to rise a little and "twist out" the top of the sail. Twisting the sail out "deflates" the top of the sail and should be done in the case of slightly stronger winds. In light air, make sure that the top of the mainsail is not “losing air” meaning, keep the traveler close to the center and tighten the mainsheet to make sure the main cannot open up at the top.

As soon as the breeze kicks up, bring your traveler up a bit more and ease the mainsheet so that the boom does not come past the center point.

Once out sailing you'll be able to dispel one of the biggest "myths" surrounding catamarans because modern cats actually do point pretty well!!

The flatter the water, the better they will point and it'll be possible to sail in the high 30s degrees off the wind if your cat has the genoa tracks up on the coach roof, you will have a nice tight sheeting angle allowing you to go upwind comfortably.

As soon as you bear away from the wind slightly, you will want to bring the mainsail traveler down to leeward and start easing the mainsail (similar to a monohull).

Go From Beginner to Cruiser — Learn Big Cruising Boat Skills and Techniques

Picture yourself at the helm of a yacht you can live on, cruising with family and friends in the Caribbean, Greek Islands, South Pacific, and Croatia. Imagine the thrill of confidently taking family and friends for a sail on your own spacious cruising catamaran or monohull. If you are not yet a sailor, we have a course that takes you from “couch to the Captain’s chair!” If you already have basic sailing skills you’re ready to gain the knowledge and techniques to get into cruising. All these exciting sailing adventures can be yours to enjoy, when you Learn to Cruise on Offshore Sailing School’s liveaboard sailboats.

Learn to Take Command of a 40-50′ Yacht

Offshore Sailing School learn to cruise courses – OSS 103, 104 and 114 – are taught on 40’ to 50’ monohulls and catamarans. This is the next step after completing Offshore Sailing School’s Basic Keelboat 101 sailing lessons on a 26′ Colgate 26 keelboat. On a cruising monohull or catamaran you spend 5 days gaining skills and knowledge to competently and confidently handle large monohulls and catamarans under sail and power – returning to the host resort each evening to sleep in an air-conditioned room and dine at local fun eateries, or living, cooking, and sleeping aboard during the 5-day period with one or two evenings at a restaurant as you cruise and learn. In those five days, you earn US Sailing Basic Cruising Certification and US Sailing Bareboat Cruising Certification, ready to skipper a yacht up to 50′.

OSS 101/103/104 and OSS 114 – Fast Track to Cruising® Courses

If you are not yet a sailor or have minimal experience,  Fast Track to Cruising® courses start with two days of sailing lessons on a Colgate 26 while staying ashore at night, then five or six days on a 44’ to 50’ monohull (OSS 101/103/104) or 40′ to 45′ catamaran (OSS 101/103/104/114)  – learning how to handle big sailing yachts.

Stay Ashore or Live Aboard Schedule Options

While most students opt for the immersive Fast Track to Cruising® live-aboard experience, a stay-ashore version of the cruising course is available in certain locations. Some students prefer the stay-ashore version in late summer when the water and air can be very warm, and an air-conditioned room is the perfect end to each day of the course. If you are traveling with family or friends who just want to enjoy the resort and not participate in sailing lessons, the stay-ashore schedule works well for all in your party.  Call 888-454-7015 for stay-ashore date and location availability.

If  You Have Basic Sailing Experience Equivalent to OSS 101 Certification

You may be able to test-out of the first two days of the Fast Track to Cruising® course if you have basic skills and are comfortable steering and maneuvering sailboats (keelboats with jib and mainsail) at least 20’ in length. Ask your Sales Associate for details.

Family Fast Track® to Cruising Package

Our special family Fast Track® to Live Aboard Cruising Course is available for two adults and two family kids* between the ages of 12 and 25 learning together. This family sailing adventure is a perfect opportunity to reunite family members. learn the skills to bareboat charter together, and enjoy countless boating vacations in the future! OSS 103/104 Basic Cruising and Bareboat Charter Cruising Certification Courses

These two courses are offered together in one week, taking you from the basics of cruising through the skills needed to skipper a large cruising yacht. If you prefer to sleep ashore in a hotel room each night, consider one of the  Bareboat Cruising Certification Courses  at our catamaran sailing school or monohull sailing school.

Live Aboard Cruising Courses provide total immersion in the cruising lifestyle. You sleep on the boat for your live aboard sailing lessons, while sharing all the tasks with your classmates, and learn while sailing to different destinations each day.

Navigation Courses and Passage Making Courses

The next step after learning to cruise sailboats is learning to sail far from land.  OSS 105/106 Fast Track to Coastal Passage Making is an 8-day journey that starts with two days of Coastal Navigation instruction while staying ashore, then six days learning the nuances of sailing longer distances but not too far off shore. The final step in the Fast Track program is OSS 107/108 Fast Track to Offshore Passage Making  – a 10-day program that starts with four days of Celestial Navigation while staying ashore, then six days heading off shore and out of sight of land.

Sailing Classes for Newbies

Basic Keelboat is where it all begins, where you get the fundamentals of sailing worked out. And from there, WCM will get you on catamarans as quickly as possible, depending on where you want your sailing journey to take you.

If you’ve been sailing a while, and have a catamaran charter coming up ( with WCM , perhaps?), you’re required by most charter companies to have ASA 114 or equivalent, plus suitable experience. We can help get you there, whether it’s a quick two-day course, or as part of a longer Learn-to-Sail Vacation.

San Juan School of Sailing

The San Juan Sailing School is in Bellingham, Washington and offers a range of courses and teaching vessels from 30 to 49 feet. Notably they have an advanced coastal course in Desolation Sound priced around $1400 per stateroom or $700 per person for a couple.

Despite being a smaller institution they prioritize quality with low teacher-student ratios. This is perfect if you are new to sailing and want more personal instruction from experienced sailors.

Once you have your goals and budget figured out it is time to see where you would like to conduct these courses. Location matters especially if you are crunched for time.

Time Crunch

If you are pressed for time and need to learn a sailing course within a given period consider combination classes and destination courses. These provide sailors with a faster paced learning style and allow more certifications to be earned. But rushing anything in sailing is never a good thing.

It is recommended that you take your time and study then apply your skills with practice before jumping into something new. If you have more experience you can likely learn more things at one time.

Experienced Staff

A sailing school cannot survive or thrive without a good sailing instructor. The person responsible for teaching your class has a responsibility to convey sailing as a memorable time.

The instructor must be a positive person and a good leader. Having someone to look for in guidance during tough lessons can prove to be key in your success.

Additional Classes

When choosing a sailing school consider whether you want to continue with that school for additional courses as some offer multiple levels of instruction. Continuing with the same school can offer benefits such as familiarity with their boats instructors and the local area.

Alternatively you may prefer gaining experience in a different setting. If you have specific interests like docking or navigation check which courses the school offers. Inquire about options like private classes couples or classes flexible schedules on weekends and weekdays and the school's policy regarding classes during busy holiday weekends when waterways may be crowded.

Check the Curriculum

Enrolling in a sailing school with a structured curriculum provides reassurance through standardized skill development ensuring a methodical learning process. This structured approach unlike learning from a friend prevents skipping essential skills and facilitates skill assessment.

Additionally it ensures clear communication of your progress to other sailing companies. When choosing a sailing school consider the balance between on-water and classroom instruction based on your preferences and expectations.

Read Reviews

Not every review you see online is going to dictate how good or bad the class can be but the reviews should aid in your decision to some degree. If a lot of people are raving about how good the class was there is a good chance you may like it too.

To make an informed decision about spending money on a class it is advisable to research reviews. The ASA recognizes outstanding sailing instructors based on positive reviews from students.

This gives you an opportunity for what to expect based on what other people have gone through. If there is any doubt consider giving the instructor a call to ask the many questions such as helm time and class sizes.

Consider Age and Size of Boats

Getting your feet wet for sailing might not matter a lot depending on how old the sailboat is but it must be in good shape. If you intend to use one or more charter boats in your life you might want to consider training on one before renting it. Some schools have many options to choose for their boats.

Keep in mind the type of boat and the condition it is in before making the leap to take the course. Some courses have newer boats more often than others and it could make an impact on your learning experience.

The size of the boat matters too as you typically want to have a smaller or mid-sized boat if you are new to sailing. Larger ones are fine too but you will be learning more information at the same time to navigate the boat.

Certifications Matter

The course you are taking might have different certifications in different locations around the world. For example ASA schools and USS Sailing standards are similar but have different focuses.

If you come across a good sailing school that has slightly different certifications ask about how that applies to you and your sailing goals. You do not want to miss a key element that you may need to know somewhere else in the world.

You need to be honest with yourself about how much money you can spend on a sailing course. It might make sense to wait several months or longer to save up for a sailing school.

Some schools might be more expensive up front but might be necessary to learn a specific course to get a proper sailing education. In addition some schools include the costs of other things bundled into the sailing lessons such as food gear and fees for certifications.

You might even find a good deal on a sailing school depending on the time of year as they have their busy and slow seasons too. They could offer discounts if you have a friend to bring along or a small group package but these vary based on school.

Refunds or Cancellations

Check with the school of choice to see about refunding your money if something were to come up. If you need to cancel for any reason this is important to know if you are getting your money back or not.

Make it a Vacation

If you live in Florida but do not want to train in local waters around you you could consider taking classes overseas. While the conditions will be different depending on where you go you can still learn what you need and apply it back home.

A handful of people will make it a vacation and travel to excotic places to learn sailing. Who would not want to learn how to sail in Croatia especially near the Dalmatian Islands?

Blue Water Sailing School is an American Sailing Association certified sailing school with lessons for sailors at every experience level. Our week-long, live-aboard cruising and sailing courses give dedicated students the experience and confidence to achieve their dreams of nautical adventure. We actually went somewhere (Key Largo), rather than returning to the dock each evening. The course was made to be an adventure, as well as simply instructional. The weather was “made to order” — sun and gentle breeze Saturday through Wednesday, then Force 8 for our ‘foul weather instruction’ on Thursday.

I thought it was an excellent, challenging course. It definitely wasn’t a “cruise.” The instructor expected a lot from the students. I like that.

I have nothing but the utmost praise for your entire operation and the quality of the instruction that I received. Al Hatch is a consummate instructor and brings to this activity a love and a passion that is genuine and expansive. I hope to be able to return to Blue Water to experience some of the higher-level courses of instruction, and I certainly would have no trouble at all recommending your company to anyone.

Catamarans and trimarans are not just another income stream for West Coast Multihulls, they are our passion. If your sailing goal is to become a proficient confident multihull sailor, we are the school for you. Our staff and Instructors have decades of multihull, training, sailing and live-aboard experience to draw from and share with you. We sail out of beautiful San Diego, CA with sailing classes offered year-round from the Sunroad Resort Marina. We are the only catamaran and trimaran specialists in California. West Coast Multihulls offers a variety of combination classes. Often, these courses have a destination as part of the plan. An example is our ASA 105 (Coastal Navigation), 106 (Advanced Coastal Cruising) and 114 (Cruising Catamaran) course. We also have the popular 7 Day Complete Sailing Course which encompasses ASA 101, 103, 104 and 114. This course sails to Catalina Island with stops along the way there and back. As dealers of Fountaine Pajot, Seawind, Catana, Gemini, and Corsair, we use some of the finest multihulls in the world for our classes.
