DS-16 is a 16 ′ 0 ″ / 4.9 m monohull sailboat designed by G. Diller & H. Schwill and built by DS Yachts (Schwill Yachts) starting in 1970.
Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
Available with a keel/cb or shallow draft fixed keel. Also called DILLER SCHWILL 16.

Anyone heard of a DS-16?

I just committed to buy one. Hull # 198. I'm told they were built in Odessa, Ontario, Canada. Here is what I found on sailboatdata.com http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=3318 The manufacture closed in 1986... I think... http://boat-manufacturers.findthebe...facturer-Schwill-Yachts-Inc-still-in-business I was kind of looking for a small day sailor for the family now that my 2 Mac 26Ds are going north for the summer. (See my profile for that adventure.) I really wanted another Mac but... I found this DS-16 advertised on Kijiji.... And since I "was kind of looking" (wanted) a little day sailor... I pick it up on Saturday. It's 2 hours away in Windsor Ont. so it will be a daddy daughter day trip. I'll tell Squeaky it is hers but daddy gets to use it when ever and how ever he wants. At least until she is old enough to tow it herself. I can't seem to find a dedicated forum for the DS-16. Or any info on this site. Has anyone a link or info they could pass on? Thanks in advance guys!

Just an update.. I can't pick the boat up until some snow melts. I'm told that the boat is in a storage yard behind a motor home that's behind a huge pile of snow. (Windsor Ont. is Ontario Canada's banana belt. I was surprised to see the amount of snow in the first picture...) So I'm guessing another month or so before I get to bring it home.
Alas! The guy sold it out from under me. He got allot more $ though. Oh well my search continues...

No Squeaky didn't know. Probably a good thing. That's the 2nd boat in 3 months that I've lost that way. Someone else comes in and offers allot more cash. I think next time I'll just hit the highway with cash in my pocket and the hitch on the car. No more higher offers can be taken if they don't have the boat. I should probably just spend a bit extra and get another Mac 26... Around here though people want what they paid for it new! My search continues. I'm open to suggestions too!
DS16 Owners Group I see you didn't get the DS16, but here's the link to the owner's group to answer the original question. https://ca.groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/DillerSchwill-DS16sailboats/info If you are still looking to buy one, I have one for sale please take a look at my Kijiji ad. http://www.kijiji.ca/v-sailboat/city-of-toronto/ds-16-sailboat-with-trailer-motor/598057910?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

The DS-16 is a small recreational keelboat , built predominantly of fiberglass , with wood trim. It has a fractional sloop rig, a transom-hung rudder and a fixed shallow draft keel or optionally a centreboard . It displaces 5000NaN0 and carries 1350NaN0 of ballast. [1] [2]
The centreboard version has a draft of 4feet with the centreboard extended and 0.58feet with it retracted, allowing beaching or ground transportation on a trailer . [1] [2]
The boat is normally fitted with a small outboard motor for docking and maneuvering. [1] [2]
The design has a hull speed of 5.07kn. [2]
Operational history
In a review Michael McGoldrick wrote, "The DS 16 is probably the smallest sailboat with lockable cuddy cabin that you'll find... The cabin has a little over 3 feet (1 metre) of sitting headroom and is supposed to have enough space for a double berth, although it's likely to be extremely cramped for two adults... With a total length of 16 feet (4.88 m) and weight of only 650 pounds (295 kg), it should be possible to trailer the DS 16 with almost any car." [4]

The DS-16 is equipped with a centreboard keel. A centreboard keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters. The boat can sail close to the beach as the draft is just 0.18 - 0.28 meter (0.59 - 0.89 ft) dependent of the load. See immersion rate below.
CalebD. 5238 posts · Joined 2008. #4 · Jul 8, 2016. Sailboatdata indicates that the DS 16 is: "Available with a keel/cb or shallow draft fixed keel." The one shown in the ad you posted DS-16 Sail Boat (NEW PRICE!) looks like it is the "shallow draft fixed keel" version, not the centerboard version.
The DS-16 can be sailed or motored in a good many semi protected areas, run up on the beach making the boat a very good way to camp along any body of water. If the weather gets raw, a warm small cabin for 2 would be far better than a tent and a tarp. Without friends none of this is possible. Plyboy. Senior Member.

A DS 16 was the first sailboat I owned in the late 70s. One of my first dates with my wife was on that boat. Got knocked down when a little storm popped up on Barnegat Bay. Down flooded the cockpit lockers when they popped open while the rail was under water.

If you decide that you want to get ride of those and maintain the general placement of foam; what about adding a 45 degree strip from the corner of the deck tread/cuddy vertical wall, then back into the hull. I've got a 1970 DS-16 sailboat and inside the cabin there on either side there's supposed to be fiberglass floatation foam holders.
