Thinking of purchasing a Hobie Holder 14

Hey does anyone know about the hobie holder? I was going to pick up a Sunfish the other day, but now I am thinking about one of these. I found one a few hours away looks like it is a little rough. Anything I should look out for? Shouldn’t be too hard to paint over the filler used right? I believe the owner said it comes with original sails but they are in good condition

There isn't too much information about these boats around the web since their production years were limited. I am worried about finding parts for the boat in the future. I have also read of many owners complaining about water in the hull. Seller is 6-7 hours away and asking $800 and pretty firm on the price. It looks like the previous owner did a quick filler repair without any fiberglass repair underneath. I have never done any fiberglass repair myself other than on my surfboards, but I am thinking about repainting the entire boat myself as well. Perhaps I should just make the repairs and sail it.

I did notice, though, that the boat in the picture has a dagger board, rather than a fully enclosed swinging centreboard, which is present on my Holder. The water that we found in our hull was due to the seem between the top and bottom parts of the hull. As long as the bottom hull is sound, you shouldn’t have a lot of water in the boat (unless you turtle it, which is a rare event). What parts are you worried about? Most fittings on our boat is pretty standard, or at least can be replaced with standard fittings (not that we broke any...).

Holder Information “Nearly the same as the VAGABOND 14. Vagabond was purchased by Coast Catamaran in 1982 (builders of the Hobie Cat and owned by Coleman Company Inc.) and called the HOBIE ONE-14. Also sold as the O'DAY 14 and the MONARCH 14. Rig dimension (I,J,P,E) shown here are actually for HOLDER 14 MKII.” Try looking at these boats as well for parts, they seem very similar.

This is the Holders predecessor the Vagabond 14 so the design might vary a little. I am more worried about the damage to the hull than anything.

My first sailboat was a Vagabond 14. I had a lot of fun with it, especially for someone who didn't really know a lot about sailing at the time. I would haul it to the campsite with my college buddies and we'd have a blast. Easy to raise the mast. I could launch at the ramp or launch straight from the beach at the campsite. Lightweight, easy to right when you capsize. I paid $700 in 1996. Added running lights and a small trolling motor. Sold her a couple years later for $900.

  • Mar 12, 2018

I picked up the boat. So far I refinished the rudder and dagger board....and that was a good 3-4 day project in between sanding and layers of epoxy/varnish. I think I might wait until I get around sailing to boat a few times before I consider the glass work and paining. That seems like it would be a lonnng project. I have been looking at fiberglass repair on youtube, but they always make it look so much easier than it is. I thought refinishing the rudder and dagger board would be easy, but it was much more work than I anticipated. If I were to do the fiberglass repair...which fiberglass would you recommend? There are so many options as far as pattern/direction etc.

I was hoping to get out on the water, but maybe I can make those repairs over the weekend. I already have this epoxy left over from refinishing the rudder TotalBoat High Performance 2:1 Epoxy Kits The cloth you mentioned. Can I use Fiberglass Cloth - 10 Ounce and Fiberglass Mat | Chopped Strand Mat | CSM I also have Marine tex I can use for the outer layer/fairing ? Any other essential tools I will need? I have seen these used in a lot of the videos Bodi Econo Line Epoxy Rollers

You know the damage looks like it is pretty much just chipped under the filler. Anyway to determine if I can just use the marine Tex on some? Also with the holes being so small I don’t know if I can use both the mat and cloth? Do you usually use the cloth on the outside?

So I’m guessing there is a block of wood under the fiberglass to secure the mast step bracket? Hard to tell how deep the cracks run

I bought a 1975 Vagabond 14 this week to learn how to sail. The daggerboard and came with the but are in very bad shape. They are warped and rotting. I got a piece of flat grained wide enough for making the but have a few questions before starting construction of them. I have read on some where individuals suggested to cut the into 2-3 inch strips and re-glue them with alternating grain patterns so that any warping would be minimized. Other people say it's not necessary.

A friend of mine that has sailed for over 30 years also suggested that I make the front edge of the daggerboard angled so that if I do hit any rocks it will kick the daggerboard up instead of pushing it back into the slot and breaking the (having to the front of the slot where that occurred at some time in the past). The old daggerboard is almost square, so I didn't know how that modification would affect the performance.

We are looking at keeping this for several years while how to sail, then getting a cruising boat, so I'm not concerned with the boards lasting for another 45 years, but would like them to be in good shape when I sell it obviously. Thanks for any input you all have.

at my local lake that is often out in something similar.

I did a similar set of to an old Sandpiper 25 some years ago.

We took the dagger board or blade to an acquaintance who ran a funiture shop and he roughed it out of some elm (stringy , I would not use it again) in about 2 minutes by nailing the old one to the new board and chased the outline on a shaper with a pattern following bit. Back then I did not foil or so it was just rounded and varnished. Now I would make both rudder and dagger more foiled like an airplane wing or surfboard fin and cover it with glass cloth and resin.

Does your dagger board pivot like the picture or is it up and down only?
Vagabond 14 crosses to several other makes (Holder, O'Day, etc) according to sailboatdata.com

for this. It COULD warp, which would be an expensive shame. Chapelle suggests making up wide foils and hatches by using smaller pieces with rings alternating direction, to minimize warping risks. Gluing two of together, shaping them, and then fiberglassing the two foils might be less expensive, less weight and less risky than using a wood plank.

of half a century ago. In fact, it appears to be a knock-off.

I built a couple of Enterprises for my Uni. sailing club way back then and used them for basic of lubbers. They led a rough life living on trailers and being sailed off sandy beaches where grounding was not just inevitable but, in fact, part of the :-)!

The boards and the rudders were made from plain old 3/4" plywood S2S ("S2S" is Canadian for "sanded two sides", i.e. sanded both sides). "Marine" plywood has no particular merit over ordinary "exterior" plywood for this application since the same waterproof formaldehyde glue is used in both. "Marine" plywood is s'posed to be free of voids, but so what? For a use such as this, if, when using ordinary plywood you run into a void, it's easy enuff to fill with goop, and the strength of the board or blade is not reduced in the least.

The blanks, when shaped, were foiled with a belt sander, and the boards and rudders then primed and painted with plain old enamel. , effective, and durable.

Using your teak in the manner you describe is WAY overkill for this job. Particularly in terms of :-)!

All the best.
