Edgewater Yacht Club to launch adult sailing classes for nonmembers

Kids prepare to compete in dinghies during Cleveland Race Week 2019.
- Laura Johnston, cleveland.com
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Sailing can seem an elusive, exclusive, expensive sport. Itâs intimidating, when boats can cost thousands of dollars and sailors have been tacking and jibing since childhood.
âThatâs a really difficult barrier to break down,â said Dave Hein, head of Edgewater Yacht Clubâs sailing program. âBut itâs something I am working very hard to try to do.â
So Edgewater this summer will offer its first sailing lessons to adult non-members, in an effort to expand the sport.
âItâs been a hope of the club for a long time,â Hein said. âWe are finally going to do it and bring some of our expertise from the junior sailing world into adult sailing.â
Update: Edgewater will not offer adult sailing classes in 2020.
Classes will likely use a small keel boat the same dinghies that kids 8 and up use in Edgewaterâs junior sail camp. Lessons will be geared to the needs of the students -- are they brand new to the sport, or are they proficient sailors who want to learn racing tips?
The classes will give EYC members priority but be open to non-members as well, said Hein, a sailing coach who raced on the Jacksonville University sailing team and trained for the Olympics.
Each session is 3 weeks and will meet 1-4 p.m. Sundays 5-7 p.m. Wednesdays, weather permitting. The cost is $250 for members and $300 for non-members. Registration will open soon.
Hein, 23, started sailing at age 6 at Cleveland Yachting Club in Rocky River.
When he was a kid, junior sail teams were made up of kids whose parents also raced. Now, though, with summer camps and outreach programs like the Foundry , new families are trying out the sport.
âThere are definitely more people who want to be on the water," he said. âWe just have to figure out to give them better access and create programs that keep them engaged... If we can get more boats on the water, itâs more fun for everyone.â
The Foundry community rowing and sailing center has opened up sailing for kids, especially high school and college students, who sail out of Clevelandâs historic Coast Guard Station. Adults can sail on fall Sundays with the Foundryâs FROST series or the Tuesday night dinghy races.
But aside from classes through the Cleveland Metroparks, there hasnât been many opportunities for adults to sail in Cleveland.

Hein hopes graduates of the Edgewater sailing classes could sail their own dinghies or link up with EYC members who need crew on bigger boats. Eventually he would also like to see the club run corporate team building sailing sessions and rent out boats for certified sailors.

I would recommend EYC to everybody. It is a great place to enjoy a reasonably priced meal while taking in a beautiful view. We had a reservation for Father's Day. We all enjoyed the time spent at the restaurant. They have a very friendly staff, especially, the manager named Mike. Can't wait to go back!
I have reciprocity from another marina. We sat for 20 minutes before finally going to the bar to ask if we could order. We got boneless wings and Moscow mules. Both were delicious. But the service was horrible. The waiter finally came out 20 minutes after we ordered from the bar. The bar people acted like we were craft asking if we could order from the bar yet they were all standing around talking and ignoring us as customers. Finally they kind of started waiting on us but mostly we had to go to the bar. The chicken was awesome so the cooks are good but everyone else ignores the customers. The other customers on the deck felt the same.
City view from Restaurant.
In terms of Cleveland area yacht clubs, Edgewater is one of the best. Located right next to Edgewater Metropark, the location is top-notch. Not only can you adventure around that beautifully kept park, but also the direct proximity to EYC makes for a lovely adventure. The EYC has a well-maintained pool, a restaurant that serves legitimate cuisine and skilled bartenders who are interested in making sure you're having a good time. There is also dedicated parking for members and guests. This is one of my few true happy nautical places in CLE. I love when Cleveland Race Week rolls through the EYC. But really, the good stuff: they do Junior Sail Teams and Race Camps, which I totally love. The Cleveland Sailing Association also has regattas there, which are a treat to either by a part of or simply enjoy from the patios. In general, there's always races or programming happening to get involved. It might be some of the best programming in the area. Docking your boat at the EYC is easy despite their limited space, and the views of Downtown Cleveland are unparalleled. Also, if you're not a boater/sailor, they also do social memberships.
I wish I could give this place a negative review. Laura (Karen basically lol), 'the manager', was so rude and screamed at multiple tables. I've never been more embarrassed to be at an establishment. So ridiculous for a club! Wish I could leave multiple bad reviews!
If I could leave the restaurant zero stars, I would. Management is very unprofessional. A manager named Laura I believe (she had short red hair) was very rude and told the table next to us to "shut up". That is very unprofessional. Coming from a manager that was the worst possible way to approach an issue. Will be taking my business else where.
Dining room, bar, pool side and patio food service available. Reasonable menus prices. Bar pub style food on regular menus with nicer specials in weekends. Closed most Mondays during the day. Service can be slow if you sit in a remote area, but walk up service in the bar is always available, prompt and efficient. On slow days sticking close to the menu basics is a good idea. On popular days everything can be good. Homemade soups and clam chowder. Big well prepared burgers and sandwiches. Several interesting salads and vegetarian selections. Special preparation requests are normally accommodated. Restaurant closes earlier than some other regular places. 8-9:00 depending on evening and time of year. Bar is always open. Stiff low priced drinks. Friendly people at lunch and dinner most night in bar. Easy place to be at for a meal or dinner alone.
It's great to see a Club that cares for it's Members and Staff when it comes to health and safety during these Covid-19 times! Sanitizing and cleaning are top notch. The Pool is very organized with it's safe distancing and booking reservations in place. You can't beat the fresh, made to order menu varieties for lunch and dinner. The Waters Edge Grille weekend menu has been the best ever with their fun and delicious themed menus!
I'm not a member and I'm not a boater, so maybe I have no business writing a review, but I won't let that stop me. :-) A friend of mine is a member and every time I go, I'm struck by the friendliness and utter lack of pretension here. Drinks are stiff (albeit made with Paramount well). The food isn't great but the setting is. In the unlikely event that I ever had a boat, this is the kind of place I'd keep it.
We sailed over to Edgewater to grab some lunch the other day. There was only one other couple eating there, but we seated ourselves and waited for a server. It must have been 15 minutes before somebody acknowledged us...and that was after one of us went inside to ask if anybody was going to help us. Finally somebody came with some menus (the same woman serving the other table, who had walked past us several times). After perusing the menu, I decided on some sort of avocado chicken wrap and chose the sweet potato fries as my side. The food didn't take too long, and I was pleasantly surprised with the quality. My wrap was very good, as were the sweet potato fries. The 2 stars is for the restaurant only...I may give it another shot, but it won't be first on the list.
I love this place. My friend has a membership so we frequent the pool and restaurant. It has an amazing view of Cleveland and all the members are very friendly. The food is really good. They have a quite a variety of options from a club sandwich to seared tuna with seaweed salad. The pool is great. It is always kept clean and having a bar out there is great too. It's also a great location for families and kids.
