As a newcomer to boating I have to admit my first impression of boat brokers was pretty poor (compared to other industries I deal with) - descriptions were definitely on the optimistic side, boats were untidy, dirty and generally poorly presented. No excuses, just very poor sales and I would be careful who to list my boat with in the future. Then I came across Ancasta (Leo Walters) who shone bright like a beacon. The description of the boat was accurate, minor faults highlighted and extra pictures provided on request. Communications with Ancasta have been excellent, the boat was very well presented for inspection and after sales Ancasta remained interested to ensure my experience was positive.  Breaking crime updates and news from the courts We have more newsletters Fourteen boat owners have been fined £18,763 after a crackdown on the River Thames . Enforcement officers discovered an unexpectedly high number of unregistered boats after a series of spot checks at Penton Hook Marina in Chertsey last December. Around a quarter of all the boats (125) in the marina that day had not been registered with the Environment Agency. This week owners who had still failed to register their boats, despite being given "ample warning", had their cases heard in court . Staines Magistrates' Court heard on Tuesday, October 22, that 14 owners had skipped paying the annual registration fee, which is determined by the length and width of the boat. Some were even found to have skipped their annual registration payments twice. Just like us, they’re fed up with seeing this unlawful behaviour take place on the river every year. We’re pleased with this outcome, and it sends a clear warning to all unregistered boat owners – it’s just not worth the risk." The highest fine issued by magistrates was to Drystan Brod, 50, of Birley Street, Battersea, he was convicted in his absence, and was ordered to pay £2,300 including costs (£275), fines (£60 no separate penalty), compensation (£1,724) and a victim surcharge (£88). Two of the 14 boat owners, Duncan Hayward, 40, and Tony Davies, 70, were found guilty of having two boats which were unregistered with the Environment Agency. Both were ordered to pay hefty fees. Hayward, of Hill Rise, Richmond, was convicted in his absence of two offences and ordered to pay compensation of £1,065.15, plus an additional £23.20, he must also pay £275 in costs, £24 victim surcharge and £60 no separate penalty fine. Tony Davies, of St Anne's Road, Chertsey, admitted the charges in court and was ordered to pay compensation totalling £1,810.77 and £250 costs.  The Environment Agency has changed its approach to non-registration on the Thames . This new method of enforcement gives boat owners ample opportunity to register their boat, however, if they fail to do so, a summons will be issued, and this will not stop court proceedings, even if the boat owner subsequently pays their registration fee. Mr Chiverton added: "At the end of next month, we have another day in court with a further 14 owners facing the music. So, if you have an unregistered boat on the Thames, you should know that our enforcement teams are still out in October, patrolling the river and checking for valid registrations." Man dies after migrant boat deflates in English Channel A man has died after a boat carrying migrants deflated in the English Channel on Sunday morning, French authorities said. The man, who was Indian and aged about 40, was in a boat which left from the town of Tardinghen in northern France at 5.30am, the prefecture of Pas-de-Calais said. The boat quickly deflated and the people on board swam back to the beach, the authorities added. Emergency services tried to help the man, but he died at the scene. The authorities said several attempts were stopped by police and gendarmes on Sunday morning, including in Equihen-Plage, Calais and Sangatte.  It comes as it was revealed more people have arrived in the UK this year after crossing the English Channel in small boats than over the whole of 2023, according to Government figures. Some 29,578 migrants have made the journey since January, up on last year’s annual total of 29,437. This is 12% higher than the 26,501 recorded this time last year but 22% lower than the 38,129 people making the journey at this stage in 2022. Some 424 people in seven boats arrived on Friday, according to provisional Home Office data. The French coastguard said 35 people were rescued from a boat in the Channel and taken to Calais on Friday after screams were heard on the vessel, following the rescue of another 76 migrants on Thursday when they got into difficulty while attempting the journey. On Wednesday, three people died and dozens of others were rescued when a boat sank while trying to reach the UK, and a baby died in another similar incident last week.
