Norfolk Broads boating holiday: The perfect introduction for an inexperienced crew

  • Top stories

An end of season charter on the Norfolk Broads proves just the ticket for a relaxing family boating holiday with inexperienced crew…

Growing up around Plymouth, boating has inevitably played a significant part in my life, from sailing dinghies in the Sound to family days out sailing the Tamar on my father’s Hurley 22 yacht.

Thankfully, my wife likes to be near the sea too and as a youngster had enjoyed boating on the Broads. However, she’s not one for the bumpy stuff so, back in 2007, when we were looking for a family holiday, we booked our first Norfolk Broads boating holiday from a Wroxham-based yard and loved it so much we have returned several times since.

Our most recent booking was in September 2021 aboard Norfolk Yacht Agency’s Moneypenny , a Haines 42 offering six berths, with all the facilities we’d need, including three cabins (two doubles and a twin) and two separate heads compartments with showers.

There’s full standing headroom throughout, a swim platform at the stern and a large upper deck, complete with a bimini cover, fridge and sink, all of which became very useful as the weather warmed up.

The one drawback of this particular boat is that it is quite large, with an air draught of nearly nine feet that prevents it from accessing certain areas of the Broads due to low bridges. In addition, the tall topsides and shallow keel make it prone to being blown about by the sudden breezes which seem to whip up from nowhere over the open Norfolk landscape.

Historic norwich.

After a comprehensive handover from Terry at NYA’s Brundall base and a quick accompanied trip to ensure we were all happy with the way the boat handled, we headed off to our first night’s mooring at Norwich Yacht Station in the centre of the town.

Although it can get a little noisy here, as it’s near a busy road and close to the city’s clubland, it makes for a very easy and convenient first overnight location.

For the new boater, the two-hour trip up the Yare to Norwich is a great opportunity to acclimatise to your craft while enjoying a condensed summary of what a Norfolk Broads boating holiday is all about; stunning rural views with plenty of wildlife, lovely riverside pubs, and total peace and quiet, save for the engine burbling away beneath you.

norfolk-broads-charter-boating-MBY275.norfolk_charter.IMG_7920

With a 6-knot speed limit, cruising the Broads forces the pace of life to slow down

Before long all the stresses and strains of everyday life melt away and you find yourself adapting to the slower pace of boating – the speed limit is a relaxing 6 knots across most of the Norfolk Broads so there’s no point rushing.

As a result passages are almost invariably calm and tranquil with only the occasional wakes from other boats to disturb the still water, making a Norfolk Broads boating holiday ideal for crew members prone to seasickness or nervous about being on the water.

The approach into Norwich is full of interest, passing under several low bridges, the lowest of which carries a railway line. If you time your transit under this metal bridge just as a train is passing overhead, the noise is quite impressive, so much so that on a previous trip my ever-encouraging shipmates thought I had collided with the bridge!

MBY275._charter.IMG_2740

Andy with his son Adam

With nearly 12 tonnes of moving boat and a solid object only a few inches overhead, it’s vital that sensible safety measures are taken, with everyone kept out of harm’s way. Again, thorough preparation, including removing the flag from its holder, prevented any damage and, with the bridge successfully passed, we headed upstream to our berth.

Just beyond the Yacht Station is the historic Pull’s Ferry, where the river widens a little making it easier to turn a long boat in a constricted space. As always, it’s recommended to moor against the river’s current but our boat’s responsive engine, coupled with both bow and stern thrusters , made docking the boat a simple enough task even for a relative newcomer.

In high summer, the Yacht Station gets very busy but in September we had no trouble finding a space and, with the assistance of the rangers, were soon safely moored up. The Station also provides hot showers, black water pump out facilities and fresh water supplies.

wroxham-by-night

Wroxham by night

The boat’s batteries and engine will run most of the essential electrics on board but shore power outlets can be found on many quays too and usually require the use of a pre-paid card, purchased from the charter company.

After an enjoyable stay in Norwich, we started making our way to Wroxham, the self-styled ‘capital of the Broads’. By road, Wroxham is just over eight miles away, but, by boat, we were first heading towards the sea at Great Yarmouth and then heading back inland up the River Bure, a total cruising distance of more than 50 miles and a journey time in excess of ten hours.

Far from the madding crowd

Being early September, the volume of river traffic was much lower than we had previously experienced in high summer so we soon slipped into a lazy routine of motoring for a few hours, stopping for lunch and then heading onwards to our planned overnight mooring without fear of not being able to find a berth at popular locations such as at Horning or Ranworth.

Ranworth-church-view

The bucolic idyll of the Broads as viewed from Ranworth church

Bear in mind that hired boats are not meant to be moving in darkness, so if you can’t find an overnight mooring alongside a quay, it might be a case of dropping your mud weight anchor in one of the bigger Broads.

Although this means foregoing the amenities of a shoreside berth, stopping in a quiet location can lead to a happy time gazing at the stars with only the sound of the night-time wildlife and water lapping against the hull for accompaniment.

Having a boat with a relatively high air draught meant that we needed to time our transit through Great Yarmouth very carefully due to another low bridge and a high tidal range.

norfolk-broads-charter-boating-MBY275.norfolk_charter.IMG_7899

Surveying the scene from Moneypenny ’s top deck

This part of the journey can catch out the careless. At any time other than slack water, the current races past Great Yarmouth’s Yacht Station and progress can be hard going against the tide or difficult to control if travelling with a rapidly falling tide.

As we passed the station, I called out to one of the rangers to check if we’d fit under the low Vauxhall Bridge and, suitably reassured, we headed on, only to find another boat racing directly towards us in the narrow channel.

Careful use of reverse to slow our progress and judicious use of the bow thruster avoided an incident and we were soon on the vast expanse of Breydon Water.

The heat is on

After an overnight on Oulton Broad, near Lowestoft, we continued to head towards Wroxham with a lunch stop at Somerleyton. By now the promised heatwave had fully arrived and we soaked up the sun with a gentle cooling breeze rustling through the reeds and grasses.

Having plenty of food onboard, complete with the essential liquid refreshments, gave us the flexibility to stop when we fancied but others may prefer to plan around the many well-known eating or shopping locations.

A key benefit of a Norfolk Broads boating holiday is the support infrastructure for boaters which has developed over the years so, if your travelling companions become restless, it’s easy to moor up and take a walk or visit one of the area’s sights, such as the ruins of the medieval St Benet’s Abbey.

norfolk-broads-charter-boating-MBY275.norfolk_charter.IMG_7914

Stretching their legs on a stroll to St Benet’s Abbey

Wroxham is a favourite location of ours with an attractive approach, first through thick woodland and then past some beautiful riverside homes, many with their own boat docks.

The lack of river traffic meant the water was clearer than on previous trips, so we could see the long fronds of the aquatic plants waving in the sunlight. Easy, free mooring, followed by a short walk through the warm evening air to an excellent Thai restaurant, meant we all ate and slept well, ready for the return leg back to Brundall.

Heading back down the Yare, we stopped for a picnic lunch close to the Berney Arms Inn, once Britain’s most remote hostelry only accessible by foot or boat. Crossing Breydon Water again, we broke up our journey with a stop at the Stracey Arms Mill, visiting the donkeys and making suitably touristy purchases from the store.

Moneypenny moored at Wroxham

After an overnight stop at Reedham, we were soon back in Brundall, where we reluctantly moored up after what had been another thoroughly enjoyable spell aboard Moneypenny .

Norfolk Broads boating holidays may not be as glamorous as the Med or as exciting as a high-speed RIB , but it is an excellent way to get a first taste of life aboard a motorboat and see if your whole family shares your enthusiasm for life afloat. In my case, the answer has been a resounding ‘yes’ and we all look forward to our next adventure on the water.

Norfolk Broads Boat Hire: Your Questions Answered

Explaining terms of boat hire on the Norfolk Broads

Here at Norfolk Broads Direct, we live and breathe boating and cottage holidays on the Broads . Indeed, for some time now we’ve been welcoming plenty of new and returning holidaymakers to the waterways.

We like to think all of this experience makes us experts on the local area. To share our collective wisdom, we thought we’d answer ten of the most popular questions that we come up against.

How Big Are the Norfolk Broads?

Much bigger than you might think! To be precise, the Norfolk Broads spans 117 square miles and has 120 miles of navigable waterways. Made up of 63 broads and seven rivers, there’s a whole world of nature and wildlife to discover when hiring a boat on the Broads.

Interestingly, the Broads are not a natural feature of the landscape, but were something of a happy accident after the ground was dug away for peat during the Medieval period. Used for fuel, the removal of peat from the ground left behind shallow lake beds that were flooded by the 14th century.

Spanning two counties- Suffolk and Norfolk- the Broads now attract around 7.6m visitors each year and have an estimated economic impact of £568m.

Becoming a national park in 1989, the Broads is home to 13 ancient monuments and 28 sites of Special Scientific Interest.

Not too bad for a national landmark that was created quite by chance.

Can You Take Fishing Holidays on the Norfolk Broads?

Absolutely!

Each of our cruisers can be fished from when moored up and the coarse fishing season runs from 16 th June to 14 th March, so there’s plenty of time to book a fishing holiday on the Broads .

There are many species of fish which call the Broads home. From tench to carp, rudd, bream and pike, there’s something for every fisherman to catch, no matter their ability.

Thanks to its National Park status, the lakes and rivers along the Broads are all preserved and protected to provide a remarkable fishing experience.

Do I Need a Fishing License on the Norfolk Broads?

Yes, you’ll need an Environment Agency rod licence to enjoy a fishing holiday on the Broads.  These can be easily acquired at any post office or online.

What is There to do on the Norfolk Broads?

We’re so glad you asked.

Besides cruising at a leisurely pace and taking in your surroundings (a pastime we highly encourage), no holiday on the Norfolk Broads would be complete without:

  • Exploring St Benet’s Abbey. This 11 th century landmark was once home to the most expensive Benedictine houses in England. Nowadays the ruins offer a nice insight into the rich history that surrounds the Broads. Just watch out for the ghost that’s rumoured to haunt the place!
  • Walking around the Ranworth Broad Nature Reserve. A floating wildlife centre, this is where you’ll be best positioned to get acquainted with the birds and wildlife which is native to the Norfolk Broads.
  • Riding the Bure Valley Railway. A journey that takes you back in time (as well as back to us in Wroxham), the Bure Valley Railway is an 18-mile trip that takes place on board authentic steam locomotives. Truly a unique thing to do when visiting the Broads.
  • Wondering around Wroxham. We might be a little biased, but we think the village we’re based in is a fantastic place to stroll around and grab a bite to eat.
  • Visiting Norwich. Rightly known as a fine city, Norwich is home to a wide range of independent bars and restaurants which make it the perfect place to spend a day or two during a Norfolk Broads holiday.
  • Heading to the coast. The Broads isn’t just pretty towns and villages (though it does have plenty of these), it’s also a gateway to the coast. Destinations like Winterton-on-Sea and the historic ports of Great Yarmouth are particularly popular amongst holidaymakers who have a taste for the sea.

Are There Locks on the Norfolk Broads?

You may be pleased to know that there are no locks on the Norfolk Broads. This means that you won’t have to wait around or manoeuvre your boat from one level to another and can simply enjoy uninterrupted cruising.

Where Can I go in the Broads?

It wouldn’t be a stretch to suggest that the Broads is very much its own little world. With so much to see and do, you could (and some do) return year after year to enjoy something new every time.

To get you started, we’d certainly recommend the following places to visit in the Broads:

  • The Woodfordes’ brewery tap in Woodbastwick offers a fantastic selection of beers to accompany the meals available in their restaurant. This cozy establishment is particularly perfect place for couples and families.
  • The museum of the Broads at Stalham makes it their mission to ‘Bring the story of the Broads Alive’. Showcasing an impressive collection of boats, photographs, models, and paintings, this is an unmissable stop for history lovers.
  • Roys of Wroxham, otherwise known as the world’s largest village store, is a great place to visit for some supplies and glimpse into Norfolk’s uniquely fascinating history. Yes, we said it, our local shop is both historic and fascinating!

Can you Swim in the Norfolk Broads?

Whilst it might be tempting to plunge into the water on a hot day, there are a few too many risks associated with swimming in the Norfolk Broads for this to be encouraged.

The Broads Authority strongly advices against swimming in the Broads unless you’re taking part of an organised swim event under the appropriate supervision.

What’s the Best Way of Hiring a Boat on the Norfolk Broads?

That’s an easy one. You simply browse and book one of our cruisers online. Our team are more than happy to chat boats, of course, so you’re welcome to get in touch to find out which type of cruiser will suit you best.

What’s the Cost of Hiring a Boat on the Norfolk Broads?

The cost of boat hire on the Norfolk Broads varies depending on the type of cruiser. A large boat that sleeps up to 6 guests, for example, is typically more expensive than smaller boats which are designed to sleep between 2-4 guests.

Do you Need a License to Hire a Boat on the Norfolk Broads?

No, you don’t require a license to a hire a boat on the Norfolk Broads. You don’t need to have had any previous boating experience, either. Our team will provide you with all of the training you need to confidently navigate your cruiser. They’ll also be on hand to call at any point during your holiday should you need their assistance.

I think I'll carry on with Richos classic fleet we've got four weeks holiday for less than a week on that I know we haven't the same luxury but I don't want all that flash I still travel on and see the same broads

Like

It looks like the private Barracuda. It sold in the last few months at Lowestoft.

In the season, normally there hired boats are moored up behind SK.Making it fun for me to not to hit them.

jeffbroadslover

I am confused.

How can you charge over the odds for a 4 berth boat and then say it will not go under many of the bridges and by the way you can't go down one third of the rivers in the system?

SPEEDTRIPLE

It`s also a misleading photo. The photo is of the 42ft version, so looks much bigger than the real thing, which when ypou read the write up, is only 35ft.

Surely that is clearly fraud and misinterpretation of what is on offer.

boycee

If it is Barracuda it was Langford Gillings personal boat and it certainly looks like her. As most people know he was the origonal owner of Alphacraft which he passed onto his sons and we all know the result of that. Nice boat owned formely by a great Broadsman

Paul

so what are these so called "cruising restrictions" which mean it cannot travel the Ant or Chet?

Only looked at the price earlier but reading the restrictions on cruising it's very expensive. The question is why, similar boats at others yards don't have these restrictions and by todays standards of broads cruisers it's not classed as a large boat.

I know Cover Girl is too wide(Byelaws) to be allowed to navigate the Ant and Chet but I can't see why this new one can't? Unless it's just a mistake in the catalogue perhaps?

I would guess Hoseasons have used the same page template as for NYA other boats and have not noticed the restriction note. It is freshly listed so may well be ammended in the next few days - as well as add more internal images

Whilst they are about it they need to get a decent proof reader on the web page. There are only so many times we need telling it has bow and stern thrusters, flat screen tv's etc, or do they keep repeating everything to make the list look longer?

Especially when you don't need them I manage quite well without bow and stern thrusters and not bothered about a TV never mind one in every cabin

Baitrunner

I appreciate there seem to be irregularities on the listing but is that NYA or hoseasons fault?

and why oh why do we still have to all want to have the most basic boats?. Some of us like a bit of comfort  and  luxury and there are people who will pay for it.

live and let live  folks. Some of the boats you have or hire might be classed as poor mans floating caravans to some.

ScrumpyCheddar

Awesome another top quality Gin palace  what’s on hire on the southern side.... Good luck to NYA they have a couple of lovely boats already and another one to the fleet will do them justice... will look forward seeing it about

Broads01

The page says it will have a full refit so I'm sure it'll be lovely when it's finished. It's expensive yes at around £2300 per week in peak season but broadly in line with other luxury 4 berths I would say. I do agree it's an unfortunate choice of photo of a 44 foot boat.

2 hours ago, Baitrunner said: I appreciate there seem to be irregularities on the listing but is that NYA or hoseasons fault?

Knowing Hoseasons since the Wyndham take over, probably them.

VetChugger

The list of "features" seems to have been put together by someone less than clever! There are a number of repeats! Unless she has two sets of bow and stern thrusters maybe!!!!!

At that price, I would want a Captain included

marshman

Only the market will judge if it is expensive! I know for certain that out of the Ferry boats and I expect elsewhere the most expensive boats let the most, especially over the shorter periods. As someone says its what people want and to say you have been on a boat with a tele in every room, may feel like kudos to some!!

Not owned by Wyndham now by the way. It's been owned by a private equity firm called  Platinum Equity   since February last year.

Yep, I heard that. Don't they call themselves Awaze or something now? Sadly, from my experience the standards at Hoseasons dropped when Wyndham took over, and haven't improved from what I have seen since. I don't think Wyndham were ever really interested in Hoseasons, or one or two other brands they acquired around the same time. I don't have great opinions of Equity firms owning travel brands either, during my thirty odd years in the travel trade there were a number of bad experiences.

The body of a man has been found in the search for a missing person on the Norfolk Broads.

Norfolk Police said a search was launched after a man in his 20s was seen entering the water from a boat on Wroxham Broad at around 11.30pm on Friday and did not resurface.

The search involved police, the fire and rescue service and the coastguard – and the body was found at 2.15pm on Sunday, police added.

The family of the man seen entering the water has been informed and the death is currently being treated as unexplained but is not believed to be suspicious, the force said.

In Essedx, police had issued an appeal for information following a third-party report of a woman who had gone missing while swimming off a beach at Frinton-on-Sea on Sunday. The woman has since been reported safe as well, police later added.

Police said the coastguard along the Esplanade was approached on Sunday by members of the public who had spoken to a lady who said she had not seen a member of their family who had been swimming in the water.

When officers and the coastguard went to speak with the lady who reported this to the group, she could not be found, the force added.

Just before 8pm that evening, Essex Police said it had received information that the two women had found each other, were safe and well.

In a statement, the force thanked the public for the calls and support they received following the appeal for information.

A man in his 20s was found dead in the Norfolk Broads

A body has been found in the search for a man who went missing after he fell off a boat into a lake.

The man, aged in his 20s, vanished after he entered the water at Wroxham Broad in Norfolk late on Friday evening.

Extensive searches were launched by emergency services after he’d gone into the lake at around 11.30pm.

Police, firefighters and the coastguard scoured the area and recovered the man’s body from the water at 2.15pm today.

Earlier today, the Broads Authority had said that Wroxham Broad was ‘closed to all craft’ due to an ‘ongoing police incident’.

Pictures from the scene showed a large police cordon in place with a number of patrol cars parked up at the water’s edge.

A Norfolk Police spokesman said: ‘The family of the man who entered the water on Friday has been informed.

‘His death is currently being treated as unexplained but is not believed to be suspicious.’

Elsewhere this week, a two-year-old boy died after falling into a canal ‘while feeding the ducks’ .

At around 6pm on Sunday evening, the force said that a large police and coastguard presence remained in the area as they looked to locate those involved to confirm the safety of the woman in the water.

Police are urging any person who believes this could be them or anyone with information to call 999 quoting incident 817 of August 18.
