A son of tennis-playing parents, Santo grew up in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia, where he took court at an early age. “As soon as I was walking, I was swinging,” he said. Known for a long time as “Caesar’s son” — his father was a well-known and accomplished player — Santo soon made a name for himself in tennis circles. His father would drop him off at their club at 7:30 a.m. and not return until evening. During that time, he played with whoever needed a game or a fourth. “I never discriminated. I played with everybody.” And when he didn’t have a game, he hit against the wall.

As a teenager, he moved to Rio to join a tennis program led by the Davis Cup coach. For two and a half years, he competed in pro tournaments, such as Futures and Challengers, and the European circuit. At 16, he earned his first ATP point in doubles and at 17, his first singles point.

After his stint in Rio, Santo came to the U.S. and played No.1 for Wichita State University and in 2008 as captain, led the team to its best season since 1994. He was ranked in the top 100 in the NCAA and was awarded All Conference Player three times before graduating with a degree in marketing. Santo looks back at his pro and college years as great experiences.

Thrilled to be at AYC, Santo has already jump-started the men’s program by coordinating a new men’s league, the Shoreline Tennis League, with five other area clubs. The league involves both singles and doubles competition, home and away, on Saturdays. He also hopes to reach out to his friends on the pro circuit to bring an exciting exhibition match to the club prior to the U.S. Open.

American Yacht Club

The AYC is all about everyone sharing a common interest in boating

It should be obvious to any boater that it is all much more fun and interesting when you have friends to share your experiences, ask questions to, and share knowledge of boats, waters, techniques, safety, gear, electronics and so on.

Our idea of sharing transcends all of that, and we also get to share a fantastic clubhouse, floats, and mooring fields. The AYC has a great history and great future, all in part to how much love and care we put back into the club.

The AYC is not a marina, it is a group of hard-working, dedicated boaters, racers, and yachtsmen who are ready to pitch in and do the work necessary to maintain the club facilities. There are organized work weekends, as well as ad hoc chores, picked up by volunteers all spring and summer long.

In addition, and on the opposite end of the spectrum, the AYC also has a lot of different social events that the membership enjoys. We host races, parties, movies, music shows, breakfasts, potlucks, and themed dinners. There is a lot going on, and all because of our wonderful volunteers.

Please note that an AYC membership does not guarantee a mooring spot as we presently have a wait list for them. See our  moorings  page.

How to Become an AYC Member

A limited membership should not discourage your interest in joining.

We have a cap of 270 dues-paying members. This means we usually have a waiting list of candidates. Currently, however, it is taking only a year or two to reach the point of potentially becoming a member of the club.

In addition, the rules allow “preferred” treatment for husbands, wives, and children of current members to supersede others on the waitlist. Members who have left “in good standing” may also request to be reinstated prior to others on the list.

If you are interested in becoming an AYC member, please email our membership committee at [email protected] and request an application. A packet will be emailed to you containing the application, two sponsorship forms, steps to become a member along with the description of our club committees and events.

There will be an initiation fee and you will also need to pay your first year’s dues upon acceptance by the club. We do not publish our fees online, so please inquire with our club secretary. Initiation fees and dues are paid to our collector.

Vim & Vigor: Glen Lake brimming with energy, talent as new coach leads Lakers' boys tennis program

MAPLE CITY — A new face leads the Glen Lake Lakers as they enter the varsity boys tennis season.

That face is a young one — 22-year-old Johnny Voss, who comes in with a ton of excitement about the wealth of talent he gets to coach up and hopefully take to the next level.

The Lakers are coming off an impressive and tone-setting 2023 season that raised expectations for what is to come in 2024 and beyond.

Glen Lake finished fourth and collected 17 points in a stacked Division 4 state finals field that included runaway state champion Ann Arbor Greenhills (39 points), state runner-up Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett (22 points) and third-place Traverse City St. Francis (19 points).

In his freshman campaign, Hawthorn Sutherland reached the semifinals in three-singles after wins against Goodrich (6-0, 6-1) and Pontiac Notre Dame (6-1, 6-0). He returns along with his elder brother, Colebrook, along with two-time Record-Eagle Boys Golfer of the Year Michael Houtteman to anchor the promising Lakers.

“I’m feeling pretty good,” Hawthorn said. “I played a lot this summer, so I’ll be ready.”

Hawthorn hopes to just build on what he did as a freshman and said his serve and ground serves have been feeling good so far, along with his strong forehand shots that put his opponents back on their heels.

Hawthorn also has a nifty little trick that he uses, switching from his dominant left hand to his right hand to get the racket on a shot that might otherwise be out of reach.

“If there’s a ball that’s hit in the corner, I can get a lot more reach if I switch,” he said, acknowledging that switching hands is not a common technique. “I just tried it once, and it kind of worked — so I kept doing it.”

Houtteman went 16-4 at No. 2 singles, including wins over Traverse City Central and Grand Rapids West Catholic, and advanced to the state quarterfinals. Colebrook Sutherland finished 2023 at 20-5 after a season that also included wins over TC Central and GR West Catholic along with Petoskey and Ludington to earn First-Team All-State honors. Hawthorn racked up a 24-2 record in his first high school season, winning a regional championship and getting victories over Ludington, TC Central and the aforementioned Gladiators of St. Francis.

Voss, who was born and spent his high school years playing tennis at St. Xavier in Cincinnati, Ohio, is taking over for Alex Reinbold as head coach this season.

In 2014, Voss’ father got a cottage in Leland, and the Voss family has been spending their summers in northern Michigan ever since. And for anyone who has ever spent even a few summer days in northern Michigan, it doesn’t take much to fall in love with the area. Voss was no different.

After graduating high school in 2020, Voss played tennis collegiately at Hope College in Holland — another beautiful part of western Michigan — until graduating just a few months ago in May.

Now, Voss is at the helm of the Lakers’ ship as head coach.

“I’m pumped,” said Voss, who spent five summers teaching sailing at the Leland Yacht Club as the head instructor and also the last two summers teaching tennis at the Leland Country Club. “I’m really excited to be able to connect with kids who are somewhat similar to me and I can understand their lingo these days. It’s kind of a cool position for me to be in.”

Before the Lakers’ first practice back on Aug. 12, Voss said he’d gotten to know some of his players beforehand, including the Sutherland brothers.

“He takes this really seriously and has a lot of experience. He knows what should be done so we can achieve our goals,” Colebrook said of Voss.

Sportsmanship and decorum are big parts of Voss’ coaching philosophy, two qualities engrained in him while playing at Hope.

“We had a lot of class when we played. There was no cursing or throwing rackets or anything like that,” he said. “We’d be playing kids from other colleges who were cursing and screaming and yelling, making themselves look like fools out there. ... I don’t want us to stoop down to that level.”

Voss also wants his players to heed the words of tennis legend Rafael Nadal, who spoke to a graduating class from his academy and told them that out of the countless matches that he has played that he’s only won 52 to 54 percent of the points on the court.

“That doesn’t seem like anything crazy or like you’re even winning, but that is what it takes to continue to pursue that victory,” Voss said. “You need to know that every point you’re playing at that moment is the most important point in the world. As soon as it’s over though, it’s done and you move on to the next point that now becomes the most important point in the world.”

The Lakers went from a roster with just eight players three years ago to one with 18 ready to vie for state gold this season.

Assistant coach Bob Sutherland said the jump in numbers is a “testament” to Colebrook Sutherland.

“He just recruited and recruited and played and played,” Bob Sutherland said.

Colebrook said he and Hawthorn worked with the Glen Lake middle school tennis players on improving their game, mentoring them and hoping to inspire a lifelong love of the game within the youngsters.

“We’ve had them grinding all summer long,” he said. “We’re working hard at recruiting and making sure they stay.”

Colebrook, who enters his final high school season, said a big part of the recruiting effort is to make sure Hawthorn has teammates moving forward and that the program continues to thrive at Glen Lake long after they’ve both graduated.

“I want to make sure he’s got some real athletes to play with when he’s a senior,” Colebrook said of his brother.

“After we go, we want this team to keep going,” Hawthorn added.

Both said they are looking forward to having a bit of the spotlight on the Lakers this season after their fourth-place finish at state last year.

“This is the best team our school has ever had,” Colebrook said. “We have so much skill on this team, it would be a shame if we didn’t do as much as we possibly can to win a state championship.”

Making that a reality is going to take focus, Colebrook said.

“We need to have a lot of competition that will help us get better,” he said. “We’re playing legitimate D1 schools this year. I didn’t really face any competition until regionals, so to play better players will definitely help.”

On day one of practice, Voss felt the excitement immediately.

“I’m not too worried about whether or not they’re all ready coming into this,” Voss said. “I’m confident that a standard will be set right away and these kids will get after it. They’re a really competitive group who are so passionate about tennis.”

Voss hopes to lead that passion in the right direction.

“If they can continue to keep their minds on tennis and work hard, we’re going to see good things by the end of the year,” he said. “We’re supposed to have an especially strong team this year, and I’m excited to hear that given the position I have now.”

The Lakers are one of the smaller Division 4 schools with 201 students, and they will see competition from programs with enrollment nearing 1,500. But that excites Voss.

“I want to see what we can try to do against those teams,” he said.

The Lakers’ first tournament of the season will see them take on seven programs with average enrollments of 1,200.

“All these schools saw how well we were doing, and they called us,” Bob Sutherland said.

Now, the Lakers will have a chance to prove they belong. And it is a chance they all relish.

Morning Briefing: Europe Edition

Wednesday briefing.

The second night of the Democratic National Convention.

Natasha Frost

By Natasha Frost

🇺🇸 U.S. ELECTION 2024

The presidential election is less than 80 days away. This is what we’re watching.

Kamala Harris on a big video screen high in a dark, crowded arena. Under the screen is a logo reading “DNC 2024.”

Harris rallies Democrats on Day 2 of the convention

The lineup of speakers on the second night of the Democratic National Convention featured Barack Obama, and the nominee herself, Vice President Kamala Harris, made a video appearance. A jubilant crowd danced in the aisles and cheered as Republicans who’d disavowed Donald Trump announced their support for Harris. Here’s the latest .

Harris and Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, her running mate, were rallying supporters at the site of last month’s Republican convention in Milwaukee, in the swing state of Wisconsin. “This is a people-powered campaign,” she said, appearing on screens throughout the Chicago arena. “And together we will chart a new way forward.”

In a show of unity, the speakers last night included Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, eight years after hundreds of his supporters stormed out of the Democratic convention in Philadelphia to protest Hillary Clinton’s nomination after a bruising primary contest.

Republican counterprogramming : Trump spoke about crime and public safety in Howell, Mich., about an hour northwest of Detroit. His choice of location — a city whose past involves white supremacy and activity by the Ku Klux Klan — drew criticism from the Harris campaign.

More highlights:

President Biden was greeted on Monday with chants of “Thank you, Joe!” in honor of his lifetime of public service. But the crowd was also thanking him for not running again .

Harris supported Obama in 2008 when Hillary Clinton was dominating the Democratic primary race. It was a political risk that he never forgot .

Harris’s appearance onstage Monday was a surprise for two reasons. One was her suit. Our fashion critic explains .

Obstacles remain in Gaza cease-fire proposal

The latest U.S.-backed proposal for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, which Israel has accepted and Hamas so far has not, leaves major disagreements between them unresolved , officials said. Negotiations are expected to continue this week, a U.S. official said.

Hamas said yesterday that it was eager to reach a cease-fire but that the latest American proposal was “a reversal” from what it had agreed to in early July.

While many details of the plan remained unclear, at least parts of the American proposal appeared to conform to demands added by Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, in late July, officials said, such as Israeli troops continuing to patrol Gaza’s border with Egypt, albeit in reduced numbers.

Recovery efforts: Israeli forces said they had retrieved the bodies of six Israeli hostages from tunnels in southern Gaza.

The latest news:

Two Israeli strikes yesterday, one on a school building in Gaza City, killed at least 19 people , the Palestinian emergency services said.

An Iranian military official said that retaliation against Israel over the killing of a Hamas leader in Tehran may be long in coming and could take any number of forms, suggesting that an attack may have been placed on hold.

Zelensky called for an end to the West’s ‘red lines’

Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, is trying to use his military’s surprise incursion into Russia to convince allies to lift restrictions on its use of Western-supplied long-range weapons .

Ukraine’s assault showed that the West’s fears about the ramifications of attacks on Russian territory were unfounded and should be abandoned, he said. “The whole naïve, illusory concept of so-called red lines regarding Russia, which dominated the assessment of the war by some partners, has crumbled,” he said in a speech published on Monday.

Moscow’s faltering response to Kyiv’s offensive should signal to the world that Russia is not the fearsome superpower it once seemed to be, he said. “It is the time when the world is shedding its last and very naïve illusions about Russia,” he said.

Background: For more than two years, Washington has denied Ukraine permission to strike into Russia using the weapons it supplies, citing fears of an escalating conflict between Moscow and the West. This spring, after months of Ukrainian lobbying, the U.S. and other NATO countries adjusted their policies and allowed it to do so.

Women stepping up: In Ukraine, Russia’s war is reshaping the labor market , as jobs long dominated by men have been left vacant by soldiers sent off to war.

Other news: Ukraine’s Parliament passed a bill creating a legal path to ban a Russian-aligned branch of the Orthodox church.

The Russian Tennis Player Who Kept Winning While No One Was Watching

Andrey Rublev serving at the Australian Open

Quick: Which tennis player on the men’s tour won the most tournaments last year? Yes, Novak Djokovic won the Australian Open last February, and finished the COVID -disrupted year ranked No. 1 in the world, once again, with four title trophies. But Andrey Rublev, a Russian player who turned twenty-three in October, who two years ago was barely within shouting distance of the Top Hundred, struggling with injuries and anger-management issues, won five. It was Rublev’s curious fate to play remarkable tennis—winning forty-one matches, equalled only by Djokovic, and rising to No. 8 on the tour—during a global pandemic that begat cancelled tournaments, spectator-less stadiums, and a plunge in the TV viewership of events that were eerily quiet and frequently rescheduled. If you are crushing forehands on a tour upended by the coronavirus, and no one is around to hear them, do they make a sound?

Rublev continues to crush forehands. In his first-round match at the Australian Open, which began on Monday, he used that shot to quickly bludgeon the unseeded German journeyman Yannick Hanfmann, 6–3, 6–3, 6–4. It is true that almost all élite tennis players, women and men, hit their forehands hard. But there is hard and there is hard . Against Hanfmann, as against most of his opponents, Rublev, whether serving or receiving, attacked relentlessly, looking to get a forehand to smack even if it meant running way around his backhand. His aim, always, is to end each point in no more than three or four shots, by striking forehand blasts to the corners—blasts that, on Tuesday morning, according to the Tennis Channel commentators, who were as boggled as I was, consistently registered ninety-five miles per hour or more. Because Rublev takes the ball early, and because he hits his forehand not just hard but flat, with little or no loop-creating topspin, the ball gets on his opponent fast. He tries to angle his forehand shots severely off the court to either side, sending his opponent scrambling in pursuit. Often—very often in Hanfmann’s case—said opponent fails to reach it: forehand winner.

When I first watched Rublev from a courtside seat, a year and a half ago, at the U.S. Open, in a match against Nick Kyrgios—Rublev won, 7–6, 7–6, 6–3—I set out to problem-solve: how does someone who is maybe a hundred and fifty pounds hit flat forehands with the thunderous pace of, say, the Argentinian giant Juan Martín del Potro , who is six feet six and weighs sixty pounds more? The simple answer is racquet-head speed. In the moment it takes for Rublev to begin bringing his racquet forward till he finishes with it across his torso and over his left tricep, his swing is a blinding blur. My technical speculation is that he’s able to achieve the racquet-head speed he does because he has a hyper-flexible right wrist. Striking a modern-day forehand begins with directing the knob at the bottom of the racquet toward the incoming ball. This requires the wrist to be, as the coaches say, laid back, at a ninety-degree angle to the arm. Rublev’s wrist bends beyond ninety degrees; his knuckles seem to face his forearm. With the wrist this far back, and the racquet loosely held, his forehand whips with a flick toward the ball—and, to deepen his opponent’s misery, the flick whips forward with no indication, or tell, as to whether Rublev is hitting the ball crosscourt or redirecting it inside out. If there is a more punishing shot hit by a tennis player under twenty-five, I haven’t seen it.

Of course, to master it took practice, and Rublev is known as a player who practices and practices and practices. That practicing began early, in Moscow, when he was just a toddler. His mother, Marina Marenko, was an élite coach; she helped develop Anna Kournikova, the fleeting Russian star of the late nineties, among others. Rublev more or less grew up at her office, the Spartak Tennis Club, Moscow’s premier training ground for promising players. “I used to be there all day,” he recalled in a recent documentary . He began skipping school, passing tests by cribbing answers from friends. He became a top international junior. As a teen-ager, he went where many of the best tennis youths venture when they want to train even harder, to participate in even more exhausting drills designed to improve their fitness and footwork: Spain. At Barcelona’s 4Slam Tennis Academy, he was tutored by the onetime pro Fernando Vicente, who remains his coach, and who was named the A.T.P. coach of the year in 2020 for his work guiding Rublev into the Top Ten. Vicente and Rublev believe they have more work to do. One of their goals is to improve Rublev’s defense—players with an attacking game tend not to work on defensive-minded tactics that can keep them in longer points. Rublev remains happy to practice, and practice some more. It is a tennis-story trope that the tennis court is a lonely place. Rublev, in the documentary, says he is lonely most everywhere except on a tennis court.

He is not the only Russian tennis player edging toward the uppermost reaches of the men’s game: Daniil Medvedev is now ranked No. 4; Karen Khachanov has spent time in the Top Ten. Both are twenty-four years old. Together with Rublev, they constitute a generation of male players like no other that Russia has produced. The week before the Australian Open began, Rublev and Medvedev won the new team-tennis A.T.P. Cup. Medvedev is Rublev’s opposite: a cool chess master, not a fiery attacker. If the early matches in Melbourne go as expected, the two will meet next week, in the quarterfinals. Carefully spaced spectators will occupy seats in Rod Laver Arena—Melbourne’s severe lockdown has resulted in an all-but- COVID -free city (though the arrival of the Open has complicated things somewhat). Those fans, barring an early upset, will be watching two players who could each someday reach No. 1. They may get a glimpse of what could become a terrific rivalry—though Medvedev has dominated Rublev so far in their careers. They will for sure see more than one blistering forehand worth cheering for.

He graduated with a BS degree in international economics and foreign language.    Following graduation from UK, Ariel officially began his teaching and coaching career with elite ATP and WTA players such as Xavier Malisse, Kei Nishikori, Sabine Lasicki, and  Maria Sharapova.   In 2015, Ariel joined the coaching staff at the University of South Florida where he spent 7 years developing college excellence.  He led the Lady Bulls to 3 Athletic Conference finals.  As a highlight, in 2017, he coached USF to a Conference Championship and earned a bid in the prestigious NCAA tournament.    Ariel Gaitan’s knowledge of the many aspects of tennis is a result of more than two decades of experience.  He has been a player, coach, clinic director, event organizer, fundraiser, public speaker, inventory coordinator, business manager, and speaks 4 languages fluently.     As an established South Tampa resident with his wife WTA Pro Kristina Brandi and two children, Ariel has made many connections with the community and is a longtime fan of Tampa Bay!    His outlook now zeros in on the desire to bring out the best in others and to make the game a means of promoting teamwork, friendships, and, in the case of TYCC, a club community that benefits each and every member and guest.
