The Fastest & Biggest Catamaran Ferries

FerryGoGo

Catamaran Ferries are faster than traditional ‘monohull' ferries. These ferries can achieve much higher speeds. In Europe, you have several of these fast catamaran connections that you can take.

Take for instance the ferry on the connection between Hirtshals and Kristiansand:

Fjord FSTR Bron: https://www.fjordline.com/

The Fastest Ferry

The Franciso ferry remains the fastest ferry, built by Incat:

HSC Francisco is a High-Speed Catamaran built by Incat in Hobart, Tasmania. Powered by liquefied natural gas, she is currently the fastest passenger ship in service, reaching a speed of 58 knots (107 km/h; 67 mph). The propulsion is by two GE LM2500 water jets. Connecting Buenos Aires with Montevideo .

catamaran ferry service

A ferry connection is considered fast if more than 40 knots can be achieved. Only ferry catamarans make this. Boats that are often high and therefore have less friction with the water.

All fast Catamaran connections in Europe

Catamaran connections in Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea

  • Aarhus – Odden
  • Rønne – Ystad (2 pieces)
  • Gothenburg (Sweden) – Frederikshavn (Denmark)
  • Gran Canaria – Fuerteventura ( Leonora Christina )
  • Hirtshals (Denmark) and Kristiansand (Norway)
  • Viking FSTR – Helsinki to Tallinn (Very fast!)

Bajamar Express

You also have these ferries in the British Isles, including from Stranraer to Belfast and ferries from England to the Channel Islands. Since these often change locations, it is difficult to pin them to one location or connection.

You also recently have more of these High-Speed ferries available around Greece.

The Largest Catamaran Ferry

HSC-Express

The largest diesel-powered catamaran ferry is the  HSC Express 1 and 2  between Aarhus and Odden (as well as Rønne and Ystad) in Denmark. More information about this catamaran can be found  here on Wikipedia  . The newer variants of this Ferry. For example, the HSC Express 3 is slightly smaller, so it may well be the case that these will remain the fastest and largest catamarans in the world for a very long time.

UPDATE: By the way, the  Express 5  will eventually become the largest.

Sometimes you hear that the Hodor pleasure yacht (  Astilleros Armon  ) is the largest catamaran with 60 meters, but this is incorrect. It is much smaller than the HSC Express at  112.6 meters .

The Bajamar Express is a beauty, love to see more of these catamaran ferries in Europe!

The White Blue ferry is the Iris 6.1 Catamaran Passenger Ferry. I think the project failed:

” The philosophy underpinning the design concept was the need to achieve three important targets. Most importantly, it had to be able to transport passengers in comfort. In order to impose a mimimal environmental impact on ports, estuaries and banks, it had to generate a low wake at all operational speeds. Lastly, it had to meet these standards without negatively influencing the hull form, which was designed to maximise speed and economy.”

The ferry is still active somewhere in Croatia. When you spot it let us know 🙂

The ferry between Bar Harbor, Maine and Canada is back in service after 13 years

The 3.5 hour trip gets you to Nova Scotia in no time with lots of onboard fun.

Erika Mailman

If you’ve stood on the Maine shoreline for the last 13 years awaiting your ride to Nova Scotia , your lips buttery with lobster residue, you’re in luck. Now you can finally take the Bar Harbor ferry which has resumed service after more than a decade, as reported by Travel + Leisure .

Launching from the adorable Bar Harbor (‘Bah Hah-bah’ in local vernacular), the 3.5-hour one-way trip to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia is a speedy, wave-cresting ride on the CAT High Speed Ferry for all sizes of vehicles. Even RVs and tour buses can fit on this sturdy vessel. But if you’re traveling lighter, you can also board on foot or on your bicycle, and you can bring your dog along, too. Since Bar Harbor is the front door to Acadia National Park with its incredible biking trails, you can organize a trip that lets you bike in Canada in the morning and in the US in the afternoon. The ferry leaves Yarmouth each day at 9:30am and departs from Bar Harbor at 3pm.

The Cat’s service between Bar Harbor and Nova Scotia was suspended in 2009, reports the Portland Press Herald , and the embarkation point was moved to Portland , Maine instead. The Portland route stopped in 2018 due to construction delays at the terminal — and then of course the pandemic reared its head. Many are thrilled to have The Cat return to Bar Harbor.

The ferry is more than just a place to park it and wait. Besides the gusty winds off the Atlantic and the ferry’s gorgeous sea views, there’s an onboard movie area where you can watch the film of the day, a cafe with homemade gelato, a cafeteria for more sturdy fare and a lounge for more liquid fare. There’s sometimes live music, or if you prefer to disappear into your headphones, the Bay Ferries Limited and Northumberland Ferries Limited have created a 3.5 hour playlist to listen to as you sail along. Bonus: depending on the time of year and your luck, you might spot a whale off the bow.

Check the website for discounts: right now, if you book two passengers and a vehicle, you can get three additional passengers on the ferry for free. Kids 6 and under ride for free all season long. And Nova Scotia residents get 50 percent off all passenger fares.

As for the small print details, make sure to have your passport, passport card or, depending on your home state, an enhanced driver's license or identification to board the ferry. If you are not vaccinated against Covid, you must do an on-arrival test in Canada, a Day 8 test and a 14 day quarantine—and all arrivals must register with the ArriveCAN system. Anyone entering the US who is not a resident is required to be fully vaccinated against Covid. Check website for more details.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

Dubrovnik to split ferry.

  • Uncategorized

The ferry from Dubrovnik to Split used to be operated by a car ferry. Nowadays the route is operated by Jadrolinija, TP line and Krilo , which run up to 5 daily fast ferries (passenger-only catamaran) in the summer period. All routes run via some of the Dalmatian Island, like the following two examples.

One route from Krilo drives on the following route Dubrovnik – Sobra on Island Mljet , Korcula old town – Makarska – Bol on Island Brac – Split , sailing time is about 5 hours.

The route from Jadrolinija has a different route which is Dubrovnik – Korčula town – Hvar town – Bol on Brac – Split , driving time for this route is about 6 hours.

Dubrovnik to Split ferry FAQs

The sailing time from Dubrovnik to Split is about 5h.

The catamarans do not operate at that time of the year, they operate from around mid-April to mid-October, outside of this period, you only have the option to take a bus from Dubrovnik to Split . The trip with the bus takes about 4 hours.

For sure not, as there are no trains between the two cities.

On the departure with Krilo catamaran you can bring a bicycle but only if you purchased a ticket for you and the bike upfront, as the space is limited.

Jadrolinija and Krilo have individual rules for cancelling tickets purchased online, so you will have to check the cancellation policy of the company you have booked with.

You can see the rules for bringing a pet on the Krilo catamarans here , and for the Jadrolinija catamaran here .

Seating on board the fast ferry is free, but as Dubrovnik is the first port on the trip, you can get seats next to each other if you make sure to be early in line for the boarding in Dubrovnik.

Yes, there is a coffee bar, where you can buy drinks and snacks.

My personal tips for the ferry from Dubrovnik to Split

  • If you are not in a hurry, you should for sure take the ferry and not the bus on this route, the scenic views is worthwhile the longer travel time.
  • Bring drinks and smuggle some food onboard, 5 to 6 hours on a boat is a long time, so you will need some refreshment, you can buy some onboard, but it is way cheaper to bring it.
  • Get a seat at the window, you will have some amazing view on the Islands on the way.
  • Consider making a stop in Korcula, you can take early morning ferry to Korcula town, spend 3-4 hours there and then take another ferry from Korcula to Split .

Inner and Outer Banks ferry service working to address and overcome debut season challenges

catamaran ferry service

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — The Town of Hertford and surrounding harbor towns of the Inner Banks were buzzing in May when Harbor Towns Inc. launched a first-of-its-kind ferry service. However, the company ran into challenges just a few months into the summer and needed to change its operations.

“We thought we would be doing a trip out of two towns probably twice a week, so four trips total. That's kind of what we had hoped for, [but it] didn't work out that way," said Mel Martine, the director of events on the Albemarle Queen.

Watch previous coverage: New ferry connecting Inner & Outer Banks launches this summer

Across the Albemarle Sound sit five harbor towns: Columbia, Edenton, Elizabeth City, Hertford and Plymouth. Harbor Towns Inc., a private nonprofit, initially planned to use a passenger ferry for a handful of weekly trips and also bring Manteo into the equation to connect the Inner and Outer Banks.

“The hysu cats [the ferries] are a prototype. They're the only of their kind. We started off the season with high hopes, and then we started running into some mechanical issues," said Martine.

She says they're hoping to work out the kinks of the new business.

"We've kind of had to readjust after having engine issues, mechanical issues, navigational issues with the boats. They've been heavily certified by the Coast Guard, so they're extremely safe, but we've been having some mechanical issues that have made us kind of shift and redirect what we're doing," said Martine.

Watch related coverage: Pygmy sperm whale euthanized on Corolla beach had parasitic infection

Those mechanical issues led to the decision to use the hydrofoil catamarans for town events, in and out trips and private rentals.

“About two months ago, we were having to cancel too many trips and disappointing too many of our customers, and that relationship with our customers is our number one priority. So, we decided to stop the services as far as the back and forth from town to town," said Martine.

Town residents and leaders have been disappointed by the change, but understanding of a business in its first year.

“This is being tried as a new endeavor, so hiccups are to be expected. But we’re still excited for it and fingers crossed that things get back on track soon," said Ashley Hodges, Mayor for the Town of Hertford.

Another positive has been the addition of the Albemarle Queen, the first paddle wheeler on the Pasquotank River in a century, for areas like Elizabeth City and Plymouth.

“Here in Plymouth, we're on the banks of the Roanoke River and the Roanoke River Delta, with over 50 miles of shoreline within five miles of town. The most fun for us has been the paddle wheeler, the Albemarle Queen, and we've been doing paddle wheel dinner cruises once or more a month, and they've been a big hit," said Tom Harrison, travel and tourism director for Washington County.

Though it hasn’t gone the way everyone hoped, the company is taking this as a learning experience.

“The feedback that we get good and bad is constructive, and that's how we grow, and we look forward to reevaluating and coming back even stronger next year," said Martine.

The company's season still runs through the end of November and for more information on boat options, head to their website here .
