Sydney is full of beautiful hotels, many with stunning harbour views, luxurious amenities and excellent service, perfect for a romantic night away. But for the ultimate stay with your loved one, there is another option – an overnight yacht stay on Sydney Harbour. You’ll be closer to the water than any of the hotels, have complete privacy (no other guests bothering you next door) and enjoy a romantic dinner and breakfast aboard a luxury yacht.
Sydney by Sail offers the unique experience to sleep on a yacht in Sydney Harbour. We were lucky enough to experience this and indulge in a little luxury sailing. There are three different packages to spend a night on the harbour, which vary in duration, inclusions and the yacht you stay on. Whichever you choose, you will be treated to a private sail on the harbour, dinner, overnight stay and breakfast. Details on each can be found at the end of this article .
Departing from Darling Harbour, you’ll be given a tour of your home for the night. Our was the impressive Elan Impression 45.1 yacht. Featuring a beautiful deck with a table and seating area, kitchen/lounge area, 3 bedrooms (although there would only be two of us sleeping aboard) and two bathrooms.
Then it’s off for a sail around Sydney Harbour. As you head off from Darling Harbour, you’ll see some of the city’s unique buildings including the W Hotel and Crown Sydney as you pass Barangaroo before sailing towards the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House. Despite having lived in Australia for more than 6 years, it never gets old seeing these two structures – especially from the water.
You then have some time to sail around the harbour. As it’s just you and your skipper, you can choose where to go, whether you want to stop in a bay for a swim or even have a go at steering the yacht.
You are likely to sail past Taronga Zoo, Point Piper – where you can admire some of Sydney’s most expensive properties, Shark Island, Watsons Bay and towards Manly and the Sydney Heads leading out to the Pacific Ocean.
Then it’s time to head back under the bridge and drop anchor for the night. This may depend on weather and wind direction, our spot was Balls Head Bay, with views of Berry Island Reserve and across to Balmain.
At this point, you get a final run-through of the yacht and how it operates (not in terms of sailing – just how to turn lights on and off and make sure you don’t run out of battery or water). Then the skipper departs and you’re left alone for the night. It’s pretty exciting being left in charge of a luxurious yacht for the evening – it definitely gave us a glimpse of the life of the rich and famous. You can take another swim, relax on the deck with a drink of your choice, or whatever takes your fancy on your romantic overnight yacht stay.
When booking your Sydney overnight sailing experience, you’ll be asked to choose what you would like to eat for dinner and breakfast. This is all then provided for you in the fridge onboard the yacht. Dinner options include seafood platters, antipasto or cheeseboards, and various salads.
We couldn’t have asked for better weather for our overnight boat stay on Sydney Harbour and we enjoyed our dinner on the deck as the sun set. But even if it rains you can cosy up in the lounge below deck.
Our room was at the front of the boat, with windows above and to the side. It’s an incredible feeling falling asleep (and waking up) to the sound of the water just outside. Balls Head Bay is very secluded, with minimal passing traffic, so the wasn’t much movement on the boat and it was very easy to fall asleep aboard the yacht.
We woke as the sun rose to a glorious sunny morning and tranquil still harbour.
As the yachts are equipped with kitchens you have the option of cooking your breakfast onboard, but we opted for a very Aussie breakfast of smashed avo, tomato and mint on sourdough, accompanied by fruit, yoghurt and a muffin. A cafetière and ground coffee is also provided along with fresh orange juice, which we of course chose to enjoy on the deck.
You have time for a quick swim, or whatever else you fancy before the skipper returns to take you back to shore.
While you definitely don’t need a reason to book this experience, an overnight boat stay is great for celebrating a special occasion. Our skipper told us that many proposals have taken place on board the yachts and I can absolutely see why – it’s the perfect place to propose. For us, it was the first proper opportunity for a night away after the birth of our son – so even more special falling asleep knowing I would not be woken to the sound of a crying baby – mine or anyone else’s!
There are three options to choose from:
Includes a 2 hour harbour sail and overnight stay aboard yacht Hunter 36. Dinner and breakfast are included. $1295 AUD per couple
Includes a 3 hour harbour sail and overnight stay aboard yacht Dufour 382 or Elan Impression 45.1. Dinner and breakfast are included. $1500 AUD per couple
Includes a 6 hour harbour sail and overnight stay yacht Elan Impression 45.1. or Dufour 412. Lunch, Dinner and breakfast are included. $2400 AUD per couple.
Thanks to Sydney by Sail for hosting A Lovely Planet.

Highly recommended.
I would highly recommend this cruise to anyone who is looking for an enjoyable & relaxing couple of hours on the Harbour. A wonderful experience to be aboard a Tall Ship with such fascinating history. This is a must do cruise!!
The best way to see Sydney is from the Harbour. The boat and the sails were extra special; we even had the opportunity to climb up the Mast to get an extra special view of Sydney. The staff were professional, welcoming and encouraging. Spend the afternoon with the fun crew at Tall Ships and have a ball.
We chose the afternoon sailing cruise and were thrilled with every moment. Sydney looks its best from the deck of a real ship, with the breeze on your face and a cool drink in your hand. We had an absolutely splendid, entertaining and interesting sailing adventure, on a great ship with a great crew!
I would just like to thank you for such a wonderful, entertaining and educational Experience. Our family had the most fantastic time. The food was great, the crowd was happy and the guides were so professional and informative! It was really a day to remember!
We thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and have not stopped talking about the whole experience! From the time we boarded and were welcomed, nothing was too much trouble. Congratulations you are doing a great job of showing Sydney and part of our history to tourists and the locals!
Thanks for a most enjoyable and informative cruise of our harbour and Goat Island last Saturday. Our guide’s knowledge and presentation of the historical aspects behind our early history was first class. I would recommend it others and especially visitors to our city. WELL DONE Crew!
I thought this trip was excellent with all the activities available, when it is over you want more! An awesome day on the harbour.
I can’t say enough for this activity it was FANTASTIC! As well as laser clay shooting they ran mast climbing where two people could climb the mast of the sip and hang out in the wind. I cannot recommend this enough people, get out there and take a sail with the boys! Also get involved in the activities as well, really makes the trip.
Fulfilled my ambition of going on a tall sail ship, a great way to do it! This is a must if you like old sail ships and it’s a great way to experience the harbour. The activities on this cruise are awesome!
Dear Nice and all at Sydney Harbour Tall Ships, We want to thank you all for the most fantastic evening on board The Coral Trekker. Please pass on our thanks to the Captain ( Andrew ? ) and all his crew who made the evening so special . The food and the odd glass of Champagne were just right for the occasion. The main event and the reason for being on board The Coral Trekker — The Sydney Harbour New Years Eve Fireworks – Were way beyond our expectations and made all the more spectacular by the Captains ability to position his ship into the perfect viewing location. In our view the only way to see and enjoy the Sydney Harbour New Years Eve firework display is on board “ The Coral Trekker”. Well done everybody and wishing you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR and a Successful 2023.
A thoroughly enjoyable jaunt, and so quintessentially ‘Sydney’.Much more relaxed and easy going than expected, with great laughs and plenty of history with host Howard and Captain (?) Andy.A really great way to see all the sights of Sydney Harbour, including some very interesting buildings complete with informative commentary. We loved the friendly, nostalgic atmosphere on the ship. The mast climb was a highlight of our Sydney trip.
What a great afternoon/evening. Keegan (the M.C.) was great as were the rest of the crew. Really friendly & helpful AND the “deck girls” – fearless. (climbing up the rigging & setting the sails) Sydney harbour was as always – magnificent. Food was great as were the people we met on board. The mast climb is an ABSOLUTE MUST and the views of Sydney Harbour from the Crows Nest are out of this world. Hardest part is getting the world to hold still whilst you try to take pictures up the mast. !!! Summary…. MUST DO.
Coming from Sydney I was not sure I would enjoy. How wrong can you be! It was great, Sydney turned on a gorgeous day and I would highly recommend the mast climb, it was a little hard work for us over 50’s but I got there in the finish.
I have lived in Sydney all my life, but to see the city skyline at sunset & lit up at night from out in the harbour towards Watsons Bay was a new experience. It was fantastic, must-do experience!
Vintage sailing on Sydney Harbour is quite indescribable. Not to be missed (or forgotten)! A great ship, great crew and great food made for an absolutely splendid sailing adventure.
I have lived in Sydney for over 36 years have never seen the harbour quite like this before. This is a magical experience whilst taking a step back in time. The crew were so friendly, the food was great and the view spectacular. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend an afternoon!
What a fantastic day. Well organised, excellent food. Great helpful staff who really knew their stuff. I would recommend to anyone with a love of boats or anyone wanting a great way to see the Harbour.
A spectacular and relaxing way to see Sydney from the harbour. Raise the sails, turn off the engine and float along whilst sipping a flute of bubbly, viewing Sydney in a truly unique way. Top marks to all!
What a wonderful combination of hospitality, food, bubbly, and a great experience on board! You can get involved in sailing the ship, or, like me, one can just kick back, be a champagne member of the crew and love spectacular Sydney Harbour from the deck of a beautiful Tall Ship.
A step back in time on the most spectacular harbour. Incredible Sydney Harbour views with a very friendly crew. What a great experience on a well-cared for and much loved tall ship. Watching the sails rise was a highlight and it was lovely to be able to simply explore the ship at leisure.
I admire these people for wanting to keep the tradition of these majestic sailing ships alive. The boat is beautiful, the food and wine superb and Sydney at sunset is striking.
The great thing about this cruise is the charming crew, full of life and love for their job. The cruise is a step back in time, the wine and canapés delicious, the entertainment lovely. I could have gazed at the waves, the wind and the sails forever. If you love sailing, or being on the water this is an incredible way to experience Sydney Harbour.
Drinks and canapés were served in abundance as we motored out to Sydney Heads and the beautiful scenery passed us by. I would definitely do this again; it was a relaxing, romantic all-inclusive night out.
Great host in Andrew and Captain Andy and friendly crew. Great experience, much more interesting than your normal pre-recorded tour boats with no character. Book early as may be full and therefore unavailable on your stay in Sydney! Highly recommended. Kids 7 (boy)and 9 (girl) and both loved it.
Sydney Tall Ships provided a great harbour experience for the Google crew… Our expectations were exceeded for sure. The mast climb was thrilling… And the ship is a beauty!
I just wanted to let you know how pleased I am with Tall Ships Cruises. Nothing was too small or too big for your staff and they managed all our tedious requests with a smile and real professionalism. I am glad to have come across your organization. Microsoft is grateful to have chosen Tall Ships in catering for our event. Thank you.
We absolutely loved our time aboard the Southern Swan. Not only did it perfectly fit our theme (pirates, of course), but the crew went out of their way to really make sure we had a great time. Having done a few harbour cruises as part of team building and corporate exercises, this is definitely one that sticks out the most in my mind. The Mast Climb was exhilarating and we’ll definitely keep it in mind for future events. Thanks again to everyone at Sydney Tall Ships and until we sail arrrrrrrgain me mateys!
From the moment we contacted the team at Tall Ships we found the service to be professional, courteous and nothing was ever a problem. All our needs were accommodated for and the afternoon was a big hit with our CEO, MD and members of our Senior management team. I would highly recommend Tall Ships to anyone thinking of this type of event.
Our staff had a lovely time out on the ship and quite a number of them climbed the mast as well. Despite slightly cold weather, it was really enjoyable time on the water. Many thanks to you and your team for making the last part of our conference so special.
We took a 2.5h sunset cruise on the Soren Larsen for a large group from work.Sydney harbour is a real natural wonder and seeing it from a beautiful period boat was spectacular. The ship itself was wonderful (solid oak, real sails and rigging etc.) and had actually made the voyage from Denmark to Sydney. Plus, you could climb up it :-)The staff were knowledgable, entertaining and couldn’t have done more to look after us. Personally I really enjoyed learning about the history of the boat and it’s voyage around the world to reach Sydney. We also enjoyed food and drinks on board which were pretty varied and very good.Highlights of the trip were mast climbing, cruising back from shark island using wind power only and watching the sun go down to be replaced by the Vivid lights.Overall this was a great team event for us and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.
What kind of cruise are you looking for.
If you are looking to do something special for your partner, a romantic Sydney Harbour Yacht stay is pretty hard to beat. As far as memorable experiences in Sydney go, this has to be at the top of the list!
We recently had our first real sailing experience when Sydney By Sail invited us to check out their Platinum Romance B&B package . The timing could not have been better as our 15th wedding anniversary was coming up, and I could not think of a more romantic way to spend it.
Sydney Harbour is universally considered one of the most beautiful locations of the world. Spending the night and enjoying a harbour sunset and sunrise is something we will remember forever!
Sydney By Sail is conveniently located at the Australian Maritime Museum Wharf, just a couple of minutes’ walk from the light rail and Darling Harbour parking garages.
They have several yachts, and today we are on the Elan Impression 45.1, their newest; it’s an impressive vessel with three double beds and two bathrooms! Plenty of room to bring your family or friends, but today it’s all for us!
This 3-hour harbour sail was to be our first sailing experience in a yacht, and when we awoke that morning to favourable weather, we were thrilled. It had been raining solidly for more than a week, and we expected that poor weather might see our romantic getaway postponed.
Skipper Mike welcomed us on board and gave us a quick safety briefing, and then a tour of the yacht. It’s surprising how much space there is below the deck.
We were amazed at how spacious the kitchen and dining space were. The door in the bow was the main bedroom and a separate toilet and shower. At the stern, another bathroom and two bedrooms (small double size).
Under sunny blue skies, we made our way out of Darling Harbour, past Barangaroo and under the Sydney Harbour Bridge. We have made this trip dozens of times on a ferry and several harbour cruises, but this is our first time on a vessel this small and it’s a completely unique feeling.
Approaching the Sydney Opera House, it was time to put the sail up and shut down the motor as we coasted past Farm Cove and made our way towards Shark Island.
We are sailing on a Wednesday, a popular day for recreational sailing on the harbour, and there is plenty of activity on the water. We enjoy watching the yacht race around their course just off Clark Island; Mike explained what looked like chaos to us – i.e. they are not really going to crash lol, it just looks like it!
We sailed past Bradley’s Head and Sydney Harbour National Park, making our way across the heads, stopping short of Manly Cove because the winds had picked up and we may not have made good time back to our evening stopover.
The million-dollar question we had before heading out today was, would either of us feel seasick? Thankfully, after some pretty horrible floods and rain in the week before, we had been gifted a very calm day with enough wind for the sails but not enough to make us queasy.
Sadly, the harbour was not its usual sparkling blue but a muddy tone because of the floods.
It took about 30 minutes to gain our sea legs and confidence to make our way to the bow, where we took the opportunity to laze about on the front of the deck to enjoy the view. You can however choose to relax in the seating at the stern with the drinks supply and chat with your skipper while he works.
By the time we were heading to our secluded bay to drop anchor, the sun was setting.
The Platinum Romance Package includes a 3-hour sail, snacks, dinner and delicious dessert treats. You can choose a continental breakfast or supplies to cook your own bacon and egg spread for the morning.
There is a range of platters, including an antipasto, cold cuts or seafood plate. A range of salads complements these; we went with a seared tuna and a falafel. For dessert, there were chocolate coated strawberries, brownies, macaroons and some Lindt chocolate.
They stock the fridge with juice and water. It’s BYO alcohol, so be sure to pack some Champagne for sunset and perhaps a nice red to drink before bed.
An impressive sound system allowed us to stream our favourite music from our devices; the only side effect was a flat battery just before dark, so don’t forget your charger.
If you tend to sleep late, set your alarm for sunrise and pop up on deck to enjoy it. If you are not ready to embrace the day, you can always pop back under the deck for another snooze!
You don’t need to pack much for your overnight stay, pretty much everything was thought of right down to some late-night chocolates in the bedroom! I recommend a shawl or jacket for after sunset.
I would suggest you bring:
For us, the only thing we would have changed was better on deck lighting at night. It was such a lovely evening, and we were keen to play cards after dinner, but the only lighting was at floor level.
We mentioned this to the crew on pick up the next day, and they had not realised, having only recently taken delivery of the boat, so I expect they will add some lanterns or address this soon.
You bet we do! While Sydney Harbour offers quite a few romantic getaway options, I think this has to be one of the more unique and one I would highly recommend to anyone looking to commemorate a special occasion, a marriage proposal, or just a wonderful escape.

A fortnight after advising Olympic gold medallist Matt Wearn, champion Australian Tom Slingsby resumes his quest to win the world’s most famous sailing race in Barcelona tonight. But this time he will be representing the Stars and Stripes of the United States.
The Sydneysider will be at the helm of American Magic’s Patriot in its bid to reclaim for the New York Yacht Club the Americas Cup it once had a stranglehold on until a famous Aussie upset in 1983 when the John Bertrand-skipper Australia II triumphed in Newport.

EXPLAINER: Format, rule changes explained as world’s oldest sporting battle resumes
Slingsby, who won a gold medal for Australia in the London Olympics and skippers the Australian team in the SailGP series, has a US passport courtesy of his mother.
But on signing with American Magic to spearhead their quest to win the 37th Americas Cup , he said he made it clear to his team that he was an “Aussie through and through”.
“I was born and raised in Australia,” he said.
“I think of myself as an Australian but if I can compete for any other country, I’m glad it’s the US and I can make my mum proud.”
Slingsby’s co-helmsman Paul Goodison, an English sailor and fellow Olympic gold medallist, describes his partner in the assault on the world’s oldest sporting contest as an “arch rival” who he has shared an “abrasive” relationship with for well over a decade.
“We’ve competed against each other in the Olympic classes for the best part of 10 years (and) we were archrivals for a long time,” Goodison told The Independent .
“And we’ve been through cycles of being best mates, and then very abrasive, and then mates, and then abrasive. And it all comes from when you’re competing against somebody.
“You can’t really like them. You’ve got to crush them. You’ve got to beat them. And that was a big part of the Olympic cycle. But also with that, you gain a huge amount of respect. If you were to choose another guy to be beside you racing one of these, he’d be top of your list.”
Slingsby, 39, is at the top of the list with good reason.
A highly-decorated athlete who was acclaimed as the world’s top sailor last year, he is hugely respected in yachting and boating circles in Australia and around the world.
Inspired as a teenager by the brilliance of those competing in the 2000 Olympic Regatta on Sydney Harbour, Slingsby was drawn to the sport by its competitiveness and beauty.
Just 12 years later he won an Olympic gold medal in the laser (dinghy) class at the London Games to spark what has become an Australian dominance of the sport.
Tom Burton clinched gold in the class in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 while Wearn became the first Australian to defend his gold medal in the division with his feats in France earlier this month.
After effectively winning the Paris Olympic gold medal twice - his first race against Cypriot Pavlos Kontides was abandoned when Wearn was within sight of winning due to a lack of wind - the Western Australian said Slingsby had boosted his confidence with a phone call.
“He reached out, which was pretty cool. He told me to enjoy it, have fun and have a crack,” Wearn said.
While Wearn bobbed about in the Gulf of Lyon for a period in his dinghy during the Olympics, there will be no lull in terms of pace when Slingsby and Goodison share duties piloting Patriot off the Barcelona coastline.
The AC75 yachts featuring in the 37th Americas Cup have been described as akin to being on an F1 car on the water and regularly reach speeds beyond 50 knots (92kmh) in races.
American Magic is among the six entrants which will compete in Port Vell in a series of races to determine who will challenge defending champion Team New Zealand for the prestigious Cup in a competition running from August 22 through to mid-October.
Slingsby is keeping the Australian spirit alive in the Americas Cup and has enjoyed previous success in the race as a member of the Oracle Team which won in 2013.
It was his multi-class expertise that prompted the NYYC to poach him in 2022 to partner Goodison at the helm in the lead-up to the American Magic’s assault on the 2024 edition.
“As a previous winner of the America’s Cup, Tom knows what it takes to climb that mountain,” team skipper Terry Hutchison, who holds an on-shore role, said.
The six boats will compete in the third and final preliminary regatta in Barcelona from Thursday night (AEST).
The event does not count towards progression or elimination, but results can be used later for tiebreakers, while the regatta also gives the teams an opportunity to get a glimpse at the competition before the Louis Vuitton Cup — which begins next week.
THE Bayesian yacht search has been called off overnight after five bodies, including those believed to be Mike Lynch and his teen daughter, were found.
Divers have been scouring the wreckage off the coast of Sicily for days, with one trapped body not yet recovered and another person still missing.
The search operation in Porticello, called off on Wednesday evening, will resume on Thursday, the head of Sicily's civil protection agency said.
The eight divers from across Italy have so far found five bodies inside the vessel - with one found late on Wednesday yet to be recovered.
Two of those recovered are believed to be British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, 59, and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Sicily’s civil protection chief Salvo Cocina told the Daily Telegraph.
The body of Canadian-Antiguan chef, Recaldo Thomas, was found in the open water soon after the disaster on Monday and a seventh person remains missing.
The unaccounted for passengers include Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda.

The ultra-luxurious yacht plunged beneath waves in the early hours of Monday after being hammered by a rare "Black Swan" waterspout - a freak twister-like event.
Sleeping party guests and crew were suddenly awoken and forced to flee for their lives - with some 15 of the 22 onboard managing to escape.
Lynch's wife - Angela Bacares, 57 - was one of those who managed to escape in a tiny life raft as the vessel capsized and was dragged down in a storm.
Italian rescue crews launched a desperate three-day search - with hopes there could be a miracle for those trapped on board if they were surviving in air pockets.
The first two bodies found yesterday were discovered trapped by mattresses inside a cabin, reports La Repubblica.
Ambulances were seen driving away from the harbour after the remains were pulled up by divers.
Sicily civil protection director-general Cocina told The Telegraph after the bodies were found that two of them were Mr Lynch and Hannah.
He said: “On behalf of myself and my colleagues, I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the families of the victims and express our condolences to them at this difficult time.”
Around 50 emergency workers are still helping with the search.
The UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch has now opened up its own investigation into the sinking of the Bayesian.
Out of 12 passengers and 10 crew, 15 were rescued from the water including a one-year-old British girl and her mum .
The Italian coastguard vowed not to give up until it finds all of those feared dead inside the sunken yacht.
Captain of the doomed yacht James Cutfield, 51, was grilled by cops for over two hours after divers discovered the boat's keel was raised - a structural backbone of the boat which could have affected its stability during the storm.
Police , who have been interviewing survivors from the tragedy, questioned the captain for several hours about the disaster, Giornale Di Sicilia reported.
The desperate search will enter its fourth day on Thursday with footage this week showing firefighters, helicopters, police and divers scouring the sea.
Rescuers deployed an underwater drone robot to assist in the search mission with pictures showing divers operating it from a boat on the surface.
It can remain underwater for up to seven hours at a depth of 300m, recording helpful images and video.
Divers finally reached the "master cabin" late on Wednesday morning - possibly where the captain stayed - according to Italian outlet Giornale Di Sicilia .
Later reports said they had made it to the area near the passenger cabins, where the coastguard believed the six tourists were trapped for several days.
Although the 184ft yacht is lying "practically intact" on its side at the bottom of the sea, rescuers have been struggling to get inside.
Some 164ft down, the rotating team of divers face a time crunch as they only have 10 minutes to search each time they go down.
Diver Marco Tilotta also said there was a "world of objects" including furniture and debris obstructing the narrow stairs in front of the cabins in the wreck.
Luca Cari, head of the local Fire Brigade, explained: "They can stay underwater for a maximum of 12 minutes, two of which are needed to go up and down.
"So the real time to be able to carry out the search is 10 minutes per dive."
FORMER billionaire entrepreneur Mike Lynch is believed found dead after a £14m luxury yacht capsized in a tornado off the coast of Sicily Monday morning.
The tech tycoon, dubbed "Britain's Bill Gates", was one of the 22 people sailing onboard the £166,000 a week vessel.
Lynch, 59, was a serial entrepreneur having founded and sold tech and software companies with one of his biggest being Autonomy Corporation.
He was also been involved in Invoke Capital and cybersecurity company Darktrace.
As well as being awarded an OBE for his services to enterprise in 2006.
Born in Ilford, Lynch had a firefighter father from County Cork and a nurse mother from County Tipperary.
Away from work, Mike was happily married to wife Angela Bacares and the pair had two children together.
Angela is among those who have been rescued on the superyacht.
In 2023, the Sunday Times rich list set the couple's value at £852m.
But Mike was extradited to the US on fraud charges back in 2023 with a judge setting his bail at £79m.
Just weeks ago, Lynch was acquitted of criminal charges by a jury in San Francisco after a 12-year legal battle over the $11bn sale of his firm, Autonomy, to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.
The doomed yacht, named Bayesian, is also said to be owned by the Lynch family.
The boat capsized at around 5am local time on Monday when the mast was hit by the waterspout off the coast of Sicily during extreme weather , witnesses have said.
Torrential rain and wind battered much of the Porticello port in Palermo overnight on Sunday - striking the superyacht with swirling columns of air that formed waterspouts.
Witnesses claimed a twister snapped the 246ft boat mast - the world's second tallest - clean in half.
Others told Italian outlet Ansa that the anchor was down when the storm hit on Monday morning, causing the boat to lose its balance.
It comes as maritime experts said the yacht may have been sunk by a freak "Black Swan" waterspout which would have appeared without warning.
Matthew Schanck, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told The Times : "Looking at the extreme weather, if it was a waterspout, which it appears to be, it's what I would class as like a black swan event.
"And if the waterspout ends up dumping a load of that water on board the vessel, that’s going to cause significant damage."
Extremely rare and unpredictable weather patterns that have severe impacts - like this waterspout - are known as "black swan events".

Luxury yachts to rent in sydney.
Your trip to Sydney is never complete without exploring the most beautiful harbour in the world. At Sydney Harbour Escapes, we take you around the Sydney waters as you sample out the glamorous beaches and iconic attractions. We offer you bespoke sightseeing, sea safaris, swimming expeditions, and onboard gourmet dining experiences.
Take your family and friends for a treat in Sydney waters where they have a chance to swim, snorkel, and enjoy themselves. We have yachts of different sizes that will suit your needs. Whether you are planning to have a birthday party or a corporate event, we will take care of your group.
When you want to host a birthday celebration, there are many places you can do it. You may choose to host it in one of the restaurants or you can stage it on a boat. Sydney boat hire presents one of the best ways of celebrating your birthday. You can hire a boat where you get your lunch on board and have your drinks as you cruise around the Sydney waters. On a boat, Sydney offers a great view of the surroundings including the beaches and attractions like the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House.
Sydney Harbour Bridge is amongst the great attractions in the city. It was the best-known landmark prior to the construction of the Opera House. The locals call it “Coathanger” and it's a massive bridge that is supported by gigantic double piers at the ends. Having been constructed in 1932, Sydney Harbour Bridge is considered the largest steel arch bridge in the world. It links the south and north shores in a curve that goes 134 meters above the waters. The bridge also houses two railway lines in addition to eight lanes for motor vehicle traffic. If you want to see the spectacular view of the bridge, you can have a boat hire that will take you around the harbour.
Corporate organisations planning to host a special event or even a meeting can do it on a luxury boat. If you want to host a prize-giving event to your employees, there is no better way you can stage it than in a luxury boat. Your employees are the driving force for your business, and they need appreciation when they perform well. Instead of having the event hosted in a typical restaurant in the city, why not stage it in a boat. You can have a restaurant-like environment in the boat where their food and drinks are served. You come up with your menu that the chef on board will prepare as you go along with your event. Depending on your itinerary, you can have different activities. If it’s a prize-giving event, you will have the gathering in the boat and have the prizes presented to the employees. You can even have a DJ who feeds you with the music you want.
Similarly, if you have a meeting with your business associates or executives of the company, you can host it in style on a luxury yacht. Your business associates whether customers or partners are special people that need to get a great treat when they visit you. Hosting your meeting on a boat gives them a memorable experience. You are likely to strike a deal if they get this kind of treatment where you indulge in discussions and talks as you tour the Sydney waters. Such a trip presents a great opportunity for enhancing the brand of your business. You can get shots of the events that you can share in social media to let other customers see the kind of experience you had. You can also have live streaming of the meeting or event on social media. This way, you are able to connect with more audiences who you could convert to loyal customers.
During your event, you will also be touring and seeing Sydney from the waters. You will be able to see the Sydney Opera House, a UNESCO World Heritage site that is considered a star attraction. Shaped like billowing sails or shells, the Opera House is an attraction you should see.
You can have photos with the Opera House at the backdrop feature. Opera House features different restaurants, studios, theatres, exhibition rooms, a cinema, and a concert hall. A boat hire allows you to see the magnificent structure from different directions – front, back, and sides. You can also stage a themed party with friends on a boat. Often, there are many activities taking place in Sydney including water sports activities. You can organise a themed party such as cooking competitions, dancing, and other events on a luxury boat. Besides, you can have company-sponsored contests like cooking competitions as well as wine tasting experiences. The idea is to create an environment that is unique by hosting the event on a luxury boat.
Regardless of the event you are planning to stage, there is so much you can get at Sydney Harbour Escapes. We work with you to bring out some of the best experiences in Sydney. Our yacht vessels are designed to offer first-class experiences on the waters.
You can also team building activities involving water-based activities like swimming. You can cruise around the ocean and anchor your boat in one of the beaches where you take part in different activities like snorkelling and swimming. It’s also possible to stage a luncheon on the beach or a cocktail party on the beach shores. The options are many, what you have to do is discuss with us what kind of experiences you want to get and we will offer it.
Whether it’s a group of 30 people or 800 people, we can cater to your needs. You will choose a boat that resonates with the size of your group. For larger boats, they are designed for large groups while smaller ones cater to small groups. Let Sydney Harbour Escapes help you enjoy and have fun in Sydney by boat. You will have a memorable experience you will keep to remember in your lifetime.
