CA Offshore Race Week
2025 socal 300, there is absolutely no other program like this. anywhere..
Next event running late May 2025 (exact dates TBD).
Join our J/World team for the 2024 SoCal 300! The ultimate part of the California Offshore Race Week, this event starts off the sunny city of Santa Barbara, runs out thru multiple scoring gates while weaving thru the Channel Islands, then finishes in beautiful San Diego.
J/World offers sailors the opportunity to join our coaches aboard a grand-prix offshore racer. Our boats are fantastic to sail and fully equipped for competitive and safe offshore passagemaking. This program includes three days of orientation and training in Santa Barbara before the event, and is overseen by three of our world-class coaching staff.
Under the coaching of our J/World team and an impressive 2:1 student to instructor ratio, participants get to be involved with all aspects of racing the boat, from navigating and trimming, to doing bow and of course driving. If you want to learn the intricacies of offshore racing or are looking for the adventure of a lifetime, these programs are the ideal – if not the only – way to really learn what it is all about.
Space is limited, so contact us for details.
“I wanted to thank you for a wonderful trip and the experience of a lifetime. I was and remain extremely impressed with all the preparation and hard work that you put in to make this trip a success for the students. I took from this experience not only a great deal of knowledge on ocean sailing, but also increased confidence in my ability as a sailor.” – MC, after the 2008 Pacific Cup
J World Offshore Racing – 2012 San Deigo to Puerto Vallarta Race
About J World Offshore Programs
There are no other programs in the world like this. period..
The offshore programs put together and managed by J/World are absolutely unique in the world of yachting. You are a truly active and integral member of an actual racing team. We don’t load the boat with clients to the point where no one gets to do anything. We won’t just park you over a grinding pedestal We aren’t just taking you for a ride like so many big boat programs. You are sailing the boat. You get to drive, trim, navigate… whatever your interests are, we’ll be sure that you get to exercise that muscle.
For most programs, we limit enrollment to six clients. With three coaches aboard, that’s a 2:1 ratio which means everyone aboard gets a ton of personal attention from our extremely experienced staff.
These programs are fully turn-key, and managed by a team of sailors who are hand selected for both their extensive sailing background, and their ability to coach well and share their knowledge, expertise, and enthusiasm with others. The afloat staff is supported by our expert shore team, insuring that you have the time of your life.
The boat is owned by J/World. This is crucial… it is not some charterboat that we tap into for occasional use. It is our boat, campaigned regularly by our team. To you, this means that the equipment is on absolutely top condition, the boat is maintained to the highest competitive standards, and the safety equipment onboard is second to none.
The J World Offshore Programs are singular in the world of yachting. If you have heard of other pay to play programs or you have joined the ‘cattle boat’ programs that dominate the market, it’s time to rethink your experience. There is no other program in the world like J World Offshore. Don’t take our word for it. Just read below for a couple of the many, many unsolicited emails of appreciation we get…
2017 Transpac Crew - Derek D. (aka Easy-D)
I know that I had the chance to thank each of you personally while I was in Hawaii, but I wanted formally thank you as group for the amazing experience aboard Hula Girl on this year’s Transpac.
Although I definitely had the least offshore experience among the group on board, all three of you put me at ease before, during, and after the race. Other than the vertigo issue that I had on a couple of the cloudy/moonless nights when I was steering (thank you Patrick for bailing me out!), I felt relatively comfortable at the wheel (for fear of a wipe-out of epic proportions). I must say that Patrick’s demeanor as my Watch Captain helped me build that confidence over the duration of the 2225 nm.
Watching all three of you going about your business onboard was a treat and demonstrated that all three of you are real pros! Whether it was Patrick at the bow, Wayne at the wheel or nav station, or Paul at the wheel, all three of you made it look so easy! Knowing that the boat was well-prepared in advance of the start also showed a level of professionalism that I haven’t seen. I greatly enjoyed the consistent communication of expectations prior to the experience occurring which helped keep surprises to a minimum. In short, this was not your first rodeo (unlike me) which helped allay any fears.
Although the Team Philosophy wasn’t a “win at all costs” one, the fact that you were able to coalesce a disparate group with varying levels of sailing and offshore experience was truly remarkable. To me, one of the more satisfying things was that we earned a podium finish in an extremely competitive division of SC50s and SC52s. However, I’m still contemplating all the ways we could have done better to make up the 5 minutes of corrected time on Deception, or the several hours that Horizon finished ahead of us. Regardless, I know that my goals prior to the race were to sail safely, fast, and fun! Mission accomplished!
Again, I thank you for providing me with this tremendous opportunity of sailing in this year’s edition of Transpac! Don’t be surprised if I decide to do something else with J World again whether it’s around the buoys or another offshore opportunity. I’m still smiling about the overall experience that I had and it’s certainly among my top sailing highlights, let alone one of the overall highlights in my 52 years.
Take care for now! Please keep in touch.
2016 Pacific Cup Crew - Andreas K.
I just wanted to spend the time to thank you again for all the training I got from you guys during the Transpac. Wayne, you are one of the best skippers I ever sailed with, and Patrick you are probably the best coach I have met so far.
You kept encouraging me to take over the helm, over and over again, and really helped me overcome one of the biggest shortcomings I saw in my skill set. Everyone on the boat had his chance. You guys were there for everyone who wanted to rise to the next level… and once we hit the Molokai Channel ,I was able to handle the breeze and the swell, which surprised me as much as some of the other guys!
I just wanted to let you guys know how much I appreciate what I took with me from this trip. You guys rock…

Our second race of our virtual California Race Week was of course and had-to-be the iconic SoCal 300. This was already the 9th time we were honoured to be the online buddy of the event's organising clubs - the Encinal Yacht Club, St Francis Yacht Club, Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club, Santa Barbara Yacht Club and San Diego Yacht Club. Online, exactly 99 boats showed on the line for the start off Santa Barbara at the in-confusion mis-set time of 1300UTC, when alas the real-life racers as well as a few sleepy SOLers were still fast asleep. Sorry about that! Despite the untimely start, once through the Santa Cruz Channel and out at sea, conditions were very similar to what our Super Maxi tri's had encountered in the 500 a week earlier, as reflected on by the eventually 2nd and 3rd place finishers, Zorba777 the Greek and Satori the Canuck, in their excellent, well-illustrated reports under the brown bears above. This time, it was our well-known Polish virtual skipper WRmirekd who was able to find that 'perfect balance between V-max and D-sailed' by 'holding out at sea (the right bit) and deciding when to gybe (the right point) for the shore and the finish off San Diego' to take the gun by just under a minute from his two nearest pursuers. Another multinational podium, well done all!

California Offshore Race Week Showcases Premier Racing
Jared Wohlgemuth
San Diego Yacht Club
May 24, 2023
The upcoming California Offshore Race Week (CORW) will showcase some of the best offshore sailing on the West Coast. The series, hosted in partnership by Encinal Yacht Club, St. Francis Yacht Club , Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club, Santa Barbara Yacht Club, and San Diego Yacht Club , will take place May 27 – June 3, 2023, and will consist of four races: Spinnaker Cup, Coastal Cup, SoCal 300, and CA 500.
Competitors are encouraged to register for the entirety of the CORW series, but also have the option to opt into any of the individual legs. Register by April 30 to avoid the late fee.
Ivan Batanov, a SoCal 300 regular, is returning for the 2023 race and sailing his newest boat, a 2009 Reichel-Pugh 51, Zero Gravity 51 . The boat was built in Australia by Hart Marine as “Secret Mens Business 3.5” and won Sydney-Hobart overall in 2010.
Batanov said, “I raced most if not all SoCal 300 events since 2016 on different boats. It is my favorite West Coast coastal race – long enough for the crew to get into a routine but short enough to fit within a long weekend. It offers great scenic views of the islands, things you can’t see from land. The course requires precise navigation and can get tricky with the wind shadows of the islands. The organization is fantastic, from the hospitality to the awards ceremony. If I were to race one coastal event a year, it would be SoCal 300.”
Michael Moradzadeh, skippering his Santa Cruz 50 Oaxaca , sailed the original Coastal Cup in 1999 in his Passport 40, Cayenne . Moradzadeh is now taking on the full series.
Moradzadeh said, “The Santa Cruz 50 loves that coastal reach, and we saw our fastest ever speed of 29 knots under plain sails off the mid-California coast. With a stellar crew in 2019 and 2021, we collected first in division honors.
“I’m looking forward to the race being a great opportunity to spin up my mostly new to the boat crew, with expert navigation by the legendary John Jourdane. Our challenges, as on most boats, will be sleep management and picking the right lane to get optimum wind. That, and picking out Santa Barbara’s harbor entrance!”
Sailing Westerly , a Santa Cruz 70 from Canada, and sticking around for the Transpac Race this summer, is Stuart Dahlgren. Dahlgren and his crew are sailing the series for the first time. “It is always a challenge in this type of racing to keep the momentum going. Also other than Cory, our watch captain, no one is very familiar with the race. I think some of the finishes can be tricky with local conditions.”
The CORW takes place before the popular biennial classic, the Transpac Race to Hawaii, June 27 – July 15.
The CA 500 course from San Francisco to San Diego is for larger and faster yachts who meet minimum size and speed requirements. The race was last offered in 2019. This year it will feature a MOD 70 trimaran class who expect to finish the race in just over a day. Additionally, the MOD 70s are racing inshore races on San Francisco Bay on Thursday and in San Diego on Sunday.
Chris Ray will be photographing the starts in San Francisco Bay, and Sharon Green and Ultimate Sailing will be capturing starting and aerial photos of the SoCal 300 in Santa Barbara, out to the islands.
The California Offshore Race Week is sponsored by Quantum Sails, Helly Hansen, and SD Boatworks.
Spectators can track the race through the YB Tracker HERE >> .

California Yacht Club Destroyed in Fire
MARINA DEL REY— A huge fire destroyed the California Yacht Club, located in Marina del Rey, on Dec. 11.
Los Angeles County Fire Department received a call around 11:30 p.m. that night and arrived to find a massive two-story fire.
Videos from news outlets show bright red flames traveling over the roof of the club and producing large black clouds of smoke.
Two firefighters suffered moderate injuries and were hospitalized before the blaze was extinguished just before 1:30 a.m. Dec. 12. The cause of their injuries has not been released.
Among the most prominent California clubs, the California Yacht Club was established in 1922 and has a long history of promoting yachting and maritime activities. It has frequently hosted national and international regattas, with recent events including the J/70 World Championship, U.S. Junior Women’s Championship, Martin 242 North American Championship and CFJ National Championship.
The club was started in Los Angeles harbor by a group of loyal yachtsmen – most from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and the rest active in other early yacht clubs of that day. In 1941, America went to war, and the Coast Guard took over CYC’s facilities in Wilmington. Members continued to fly the Club Burgee, but after World War II, the facilities were so run down that CYC never could return to its birthplace.
Former owner Steve Hathaway noted that his father helped build the club in the 1960s. “It’s been a home for so many people,” said Hathaway in a statement. “We are so heartbroken right now… It tears me apart to see… It’s just terrible.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
