This boat has been a long time coming – the culmination of almost four years incubation by Tauranga-based Herley Boats. Herley’s built a solid reputation with its premium range of custom aluminium boats, all featuring the trademark plumb bow and massive internal volume. It also has a couple of powercats under its belt, with a smaller model launched last year to trial some of the electric technology, and a much larger 5900 model on the drawing board. But it’s their Roger Hill-designed 3400 model (34 foot or 10.4m) that’s hit the sweet spot of luxury, comfort and practicality.

Style The 10.4m vessel (4.7m beam) stands out, with its grey sedan-style hull, smoky grey glass windows and contrasting tan-coloured decking and upholstery in the cockpit. The catamaran configuration provides space for two double cabins in the forward area, each with a generous size double bed. A toilet on the port side and separate shower to starboard provide facilities for extended cruising. The saloon area is beautifully finished in matching tan leather-look vinyl trim, and the walnut cabinetry and pure-white headliner is very stylish.

Controls The propulsion system’s supplied by Electric Boats (electricboats.biz). This includes the motors,controllers, helm display and controls, batteries and battery management system. The control and management system is available to other boatbuilders and is scalable – so it can be put into larger boats and configured to operate in other modes such as electric only, as well as connect to other systems. Helm controls are also simple to use. The left and right screens are conventional Garmin MFDs, user-configurable to show the skipper’s sonar and chart preferences. The middle screen houses the ‘smarts’ of the management systems, and the controls for the two electric motors.

New Electric 3400 Herley Power Cat with 2,500 nm Range

Herley Boats, the New Zealand builder, just launched a new electric, aluminum Herley 3400 power cat with a range of 2,500 nm at 8 knots.

The new Herley is silent, and has minimal impact on the environment. It runs on solar/electric or diesel power. Its top performance comes from running on electric and diesel simultaneously.

Running on its battery alone, the boat travels at 6 knots for six hours. But it has a “range extender” that includes a 120kW permanent-magnet diesel generator that provides the 2,500 nm maximum range. The electric drive comes from twin 100kW motors that can propel the efficient catamaran hull to a top speed of just over 20 knots.

The 3400’s cabin roof is covered with 14 solar  panels, providing a self-charging capacity to power all the on-board accessories, including fridge, freezer, hot water, a large-screen TV, electronics and even the underwater LED lights. The 600kg battery bank is in the cat’s starboard hull; the diesel generator is on the port side.

The cat has a raked windshield for protection from the sun and glare. The hull is a grey color, the windows are a smoked grey, while the interior upholstery is a contrasting tan color. Herley is considered a premium builder, and the 3400 has a high-quality fit and finish.

The cat has a cabin in each hull with a double bed. The head is on the port side, and the shower is on the starboard side.

The helm station is just off center to starboard, with a two-person helm seat. The seat folds down to provide an easy walkway to the starboard side cabin and shower. The helm has three displays. Traditional Garmin MFDs are on the left and right side, while the center display houses the electric management systems and information for the two electric motors.

In the salon, the galley is to port, opposite a dining table and an L-shaped sofa. Aft, in the cockpit, an island console houses a bait board, live-bait well, sink, storage, and saltwater washdown.

Herley 5900 Powercat

The Herley 5900 Powercat is the product of a design coalition between Herley Boats and Roger Hill Yacht Design, the 5900 will be Herley Boats flagship model for the Hybrid Powered Catamaran Range.

  This 59-Foot displacement catamaran features two electric motors which run in parallel with two diesel motors. This allows you to power the boat in three different modes; silently using only the electric motors, traditional diesel only, or both systems can be run simultaneously for maximum power output.

The layout of the 5900 has been designed for maximum comfort and use of the extra space granted with a catamaran. The master cabin is in the starboard hull and there are two double cabins in the port side. The main deck of the Herley Powercat features a generous living and dining area with a full galley and the primary helm position.  The sliding doors off the living area open out to the aft entertaining deck, another exterior lounge is positioned on the foredeck. Below the main deck is the garage which has a lowering tender door that doubles as a swim platform. The top deck boasts another living space, bar, and an open helm station. The Interior details and finishes are all completely customizable making every 5900 finished to our client’s preferences.

Electric Catamarans

The use of space-grade materials and technologies, along with catamarans’ superior stability and speed, have made them increasingly popular over the last few decades. A maximum surface area for the solar panels, comfort onboard and remarkable autonomy make an electric catamaran an ideal boat for coastal cruises with friends and family as well as for commercial eco-tours and far offshore explorations.

More Space, Pleasure and Autonomy

The twin-hull design of a catamaran offers an unparalleled level of comfort for the owner and their guests. The increased living space and higher headroom inside create the feeling of being on a luxury cruise, while the bridge allows for a spacious helm and leisure area. An expanded deck surface allows for installing an oversized solar panel, providing a higher power-to-displacement ratio. Having a larger solar roof translates into an almost infinite range and higher cruising speed.

Cost-Effective and Low Maintenance

With no reliance on fossil fuels, electric catamarans sail at zero fuel cost per mile. Having almost infinite autonomy provided by oversized solar panels and high-capacity battery banks, solar-powered cats deliver a continuous infinite range. Using electric motors instead of fossil fuel engines reduces the cost of maintenance by more than 80%. The absence of fuel tanks, filters and pumps, exhaust, transmission, oil and ignition and hundreds of other components present in explosion-based engines makes electric catamarans so much cheaper to maintain and keep in good shape.

Silent, Stable and Sustainable

Cruising along the waves or staying at anchor in full silence, undisturbed by the sounds of an engine or a generator, makes electric catamarans so desirable to owners and their guests. The stability provided by the dual-hull design adds to the comfort and safety onboard, allowing for full immersion in the environment. No exhaust, CO2, oil spill or sounds make electric catamarans ideal for eco-tourism in pristine waters. With no distractions while onboard, the journey becomes the destination.
