The Grunion

Grunion sports, grunion sports | on the water: the legendary 125-mile downhill race from newport to ensenada.

seal beach yacht club results

Last weekend was the 75th running of the legendary 125-mile downhill race from Newport to Ensenada (N2E). The fleet of 121 boats started last Friday morning — and the weekend was almost balmy — and we all know sailors prefer sporty and breezy over still and calm.

Traditionally, the race starts with good wind, and just about the time that crews finish dinner, the wind turns off.

“But for the grace of God, a disgusted skipper and a strong motor we would still be slatting around a slate sea off La Jolla along with many others. Even so, we only made San Diego under power, and hitch-hiked the rest of the way to Ensenada,” V. Almon Lockabey, of The San Bernadino Sun-Telegram, wrote in his account in 1954.

While there were no reports of hitchhiking yachtsmen in San Diego, most of the fleet took more than 24 hours to reach the finish line. Some retired early, while others did a classic “turn and burn,” where they finished the race and immediately turned around to head towards home.

My husband and I made the trek to Ensenada and tracked the racers’ progress from the luxury and comfort of the Carnival Radiance.

I was thankful I didn’t need to serve a 3 a.m. watch on board a small sailboat. But, I wasn’t the only one clever enough to reach Ensenada without hoisting a sail. To my surprise, Mike Guccione and a group of Pacific Mariners YC members were also on Radiance — donning regatta t-shirts. (The Race watch cruise is even on their official calendar) They opted to trade their foulies for dinner jackets for the weekend.

The N2E race has great history – the 60-foot trimaran that starred in the movie “Waterworld” won best elapsed time honors in 2009 and 2010. Actors Humphrey Bogart and Buddy Ebsen, news anchor Walter Cronkite and comedienne Vicki Lawrence were just some of the celebrities who have raced in N2E.

In 1961, multiple news outlets noted that seizure of more than 200 bottle of liquor from seven yachts, many returning from the N2E race, as reported by the U.S. attorney’s office. Seal Beach YC’s Andy Horning, a second generation N2E sailor, shared a story about his father returning to Long Beach after a N2E race and throwing bottles overboard- to avoid smuggling charges.

In 1958, a boat was turned down for the race because it was unsafe. The owners, irate over the committee’s decision, decided to sail the craft up from San Diego to file a formal protest. The protest never materialized, however- en route to Newport, the boat sank according to a Los Angeles Times story from 1958.

Kudos to our Long Beach racers who trophied in the 75th annual Newport to Ensenada (N2E) race:

  • Alamitos Bay YC Taniwha- 1St Alice Pursell, President of NOSA. ORCA,-A, and Stein Cross trophies; The club also won the Spirit of Ensenada award for being the club with the most winners- 4 First place awards.
  • Long Beach YC- 3rd Trouble, City of Newport Trophy
  • Navy YC- Synergy 2nd Union Bank Trophy
  • Shoreline YC- Serenity 4th place Donovan & Seaman trophy
  • Seal Beach YC- Windrose 1st- Coral Hotel and 1St : Donovan & Seaman trophies: 1st Day Tripper II, Converse Wurdemann Trophy; Lulu 1st Sec. of Foreign Relations, 2nd Donovan & Seaman trophies

seal beach yacht club results

On the Horizon is a summarized Notice of Race for upcoming select regattas along the Southern California Coast. This column will briefly rephrase rules, regulations, qualifications, fees and awards.

About the SCYA Midwinter Regatta: The SCYA Annual Midwinter Regatta is a prestigious sailing event held annually by the Southern California Yachting Association (SCYA). It is one of the largest and most anticipated regattas on the U.S. West Coast. The Midwinter Regatta features various sailing classes, including dinghies, keelboats, multihulls, and offshore boats. Races are held in locations along the Southern California coast, with each participating yacht club hosting races in their respective areas. The regatta offers competitive racing in both one-design and handicap classes, providing opportunities for sailors of all skill levels to participate and test their abilities against top-notch competition.

Apart from the competitive racing, the Midwinter Regatta also fosters a sense of camaraderie and community among sailors. Participants have the chance to socialize and network with fellow sailors, exchange tips and techniques, and celebrate their passion for the sport of sailing.

The SCYA Annual Midwinter Regatta has a rich history dating back several decades and has grown to become a cornerstone event in the Southern California sailing calendar. SEAL BEACH YACHT CLUB

The Seal Beach Yacht Club (SlBYC) is a dynamic family-oriented club featuring an extensive cruising program, regattas and sailboat racing. The membership is a lively social group who enjoys parties and dances throughout the year. Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to own a boat to be a member ! All you need is interest in the water (and our world famous parties!).

The club bar is open Thursday through Sunday in the summer and weekends in the winter. Dinner is served Friday and Sunday evenings all year. The club is supported by an energetic women’s organization, the Sea Belles, which sponsors dinners and parties on several Saturday evenings. Many Saturdays have events such as Bingo, Trivia Night, and more. Many Sundays are "Explorer Sundays" where folks share their travel experiences with the club. Sunday night is Grill Your Own (GYO) where you bring your protein to grill, and the fixings to go along are avaliable.

SlBYC provides the opportunity to meet and make new friends within the club, on the docks, or on the water. If you are a new boat owner you may take advantage of the experienced yachtsmen within the membership. Club cruising and racing will help develop your skills on the water through interaction with involved members. The spirit of camaraderie is woven through these activities. Prospective boat owners gain valuable expertise from our members. Many non-boat owners are invited along on member boats for events as well.

Club Cruises are a fun way to get out on the water and explore another marina and/or yacht club. All most all of the cruises have accommodations nearby for non-boater overnights. Often the cruises are within a short drive, so you can join the fun on the docks.

Reciprocal privileges are available to SlBYC members at participating clubs throughout the world. The warmth of nationwide and even international recognition is evident when viewing the hundreds of yacht club burgees hanging in the club. Our blue and gold burgee hangs in clubs from Europe to Australia. SlBYC membership is a way to enjoy your boating activity to the fullest. Both sail and power boaters are welcome in SlBYC. While many of our members own boats from 20′ to over 50′ in length, boat ownership is not a prerequisite for membership.

Be sure to browse the events listed on our home page to get an idea of our activities. Why not come and visit for one? Just let us know in the below message box so we can get you set up. (Online registrations are for members and their guests only, so you'll need to contact us).

The Seal Beach Yacht Club is limited to a membership of 500. The club currently has openings and is accepting applications for membership. If the excitement of an active, on the water club membership interests you, please visit the club located at 255 N. Marina Drive on the Alamitos Bay.
