Wiencke Island, Seven Sisters of Fief; Cape Renard, Southeast Tower

Antarctica, antarctic peninsula.

Beginning on November 21, Laurent Bibollet, Emmanuel Chance, Yann Delevaux, Paul Dudas, David Lacoste, and I, operating from the yacht Podorange , made the first traverse of the Seven Sisters of Fief, above Port Lockroy on Wiencke Island. The first day we climbed the most southwesterly sister, Janssen Peak (1,085m, a.k.a. the Seventh Sister, first climbed in 2000), from the south. This gave ca 500m of snow and ice at 50–55°, with a 3m step of vertical snow right before the first top. We followed a fine snow ridge to the second top of Janssen peak and then made 10 rappels down the south side, from Abalakovs and deadmen, to the bergschrund, where we camped for the night. We had been unable to continue directly to the second peak because of ice mushrooms.

On November 22 we walked around Janssen Peak on the southeast side and climbed ca 300m of steep snow and ice to regain the crest before the Sixth Sister. We followed the ridge to an overhanging snow mushroom at the base of the summit, then made a 30m rappel on the east flank. From that point, two pitches (80° ice; 60° snow) led to the top. We continued along the sharp ridge, making three rappels down the center of a huge mushroom to reach the col between the sixth and fifth sisters. The ridge to the Fifth Sister had sections of steep snow at 60–70°. The descent was very steep and required three rappels, after which a snow ridge with a section of 65° led to the top of the Fourth Sister. We reached a large saddle below Sister Three and gained its summit via 50° snow. The descent to the next gap was a trial of route-finding, as we were in complete white-out. Keeping to the crest throughout (generally 50°, with two sections of 70°), we reached the summit of the Second Sister. On the far side we went down snow slopes of 30–40°, then made two 60m rappels to gain a wide, flat glacier. The summit of First Sister (first climbed in 2001) was one hour away. We reached this final peak at 7 a.m. on the 23rd. At one point a cornice broke and I fell 20m.

We descended to the south, then moved northeast before making eight rappels from Abalakovs and pitons down a wide couloir on the Port Lockroy (north) side, and finally reached our yacht at 3 p.m, after being on the go for 30 hours. It had been an exposed and committing route, more than 11km in length and graded TD+. Wings on ice axes were essential.

A few days later, Laurent Bibollet, Karine Payot, and I made the first ski and snowboard descent of a 300m couloir (50–55°) below Janssen on its northwest flank, after which we traveled to Cape Renard and on December 1 made the first ascent of the Southeast Tower (700m).

Starting from the ocean, an exposed approach under a serac was followed by slopes of 40° to reach easy glaciated terrain leading to the base of the southwest face. Once across the bergschrund, Laurent, Emmanuel, Yann, Paul, David, and I climbed 100m of 60° snow to arrive at a dome. A second bergschrund guarded three pitches of 55° snow, above which 200m of mixed rock and ice, where we got good belays from pitons and cams, was followed by another 100m of snow slanting to the left. The crux came right below the summit: 15m of M5, followed by a thin ice gully (70°), leading to 80m of atrocious snow. We slanted right, bypassing the final snow mushroom, to the flat and uncorniced summit. We descended our route in 10 rappels from deadmen and pitons. We named the 500m route (TD/TD+) Podronard after our boat, and completed it in a 13-hour round trip.

Hovgaard Island, Antarctica

Photo Story: Antarctica

Portal Point and Enterprise Island

Having been in the region of Antarctica for some time, we had not yet actually touched the continent itself. Heading across a large bay, we left Bluff and Challenger Islands behind us and headed for our first stop on the mainland. Beyond that lay an intriguing mooring in the form of a wrecked whaling ship at Enterprise Island.

The charts for this area lack accuracy and detail, and anchorages as surveyed are intended for large ships, not small yachts. The annotations on the chart pictured to the right are typical – these notes given to us by an ice pilot, together with hand-drawn maps from other boaters, were all that we had to go on in order to locate, approach, and navigate into bays and areas commonly ringed by moraine and rock.

Portal Point, Enterprise Island, and Cuverville Island

The Reclus Peninsula protrudes north from the mainland, and at its northern most point a little spike of land called Portal Point forms a small protected area. This peninsula of a peninsula of the Peninsula would be the first time we had walked on the Antarctica continent.

Continent

It was snowing when we arrived, but calm. The anchorage was recorded by other boaters as another mooring arrangement, requiring shore-lines. The weather can change rapidly in this area, and the elected set-up must be adequate for any possible surprises. However we decided that the Rocna was adequately set, and would be secure on its own, with just enough swinging room.

Portal Point

Portal Point is part of the continent, but the dramatic mountain ranges of the Peninsula run down the main coastline. On the other side of the bay, they give us a fantastic view whenever the cloud clears enough. Scale is difficult to comprehend, even when present in person. The coastline below is 12 nautical miles (20 km) distant.

Foster Plateau

The next stop was Enterprise Island, where the wreck of an old ship lies in the shallows and makes an ideal dock for visiting yachts. On arrival, there was another yacht already there. We would raft alongside.

Enterprise Island

The boat docked, we decide to do a little snow hiking. Walking on this terrain is a little dangerous, as the hills are mined with concealed crevices. In this event we followed the tracks of the crew of the other boat.

Enterprise Island

At the top of a high ice cliff above the boats, we found the crew and guests from Podorange , a French charter yacht on their first trip to Antarctica. They had rappelling equipment, and were abseiling down the ice cliff to the rocky beach below.

Enterprise visitors

Our two boats were moored to the wreck of the Governoren , a Norwegian whaling ship which suffered a fire some hundred years ago. The crew were unable to contain the fire, and deliberately ran her aground on the rocks here. All were rescued with no loss of life.

“Kiwi Roa” & “Podorange” against wreck of “Governoren”

The wreck provides historic interest, and is a symbol of the small impact man has made so far on Antarctica.

“Governoren”

On a nearby islet, there are the remains of two abandoned whaling boats. The contrast between the old tradition and the aluminium of our own “ship’s boat” was striking.

Boats

Podorange have their own answer. Zodiacs with decent outboards are ideal for cruising and gunkholing in this area. For safety, at least one crewmember needs to remain on the yacht and radio contact with handheld VHFs is important.

A day later, we were at Cuverville Island, and the weather had closed in a little again.

Cuverville Island

This leopard seal had his own boat – he went floating past us, headed out to sea. It seemed he was resting after lunch.

Leopard seal

Leopard seals are known to be fast and dangerous, and are a powerful animal not to be trifled with. Getting close is risky.

Watching you watching me

Power – and teeth – were on display. We left him alone, content with his free ticket to we can only imagine where.

Leopard seal

Nearby, blue-eyed shags were safer but more skittish.

Blue-eyed shags

They were wary but not too shy.

Another 2 A.M. photo shows why visitors can find their sleep patterns disrupted in Antarctica. Winter can cause depression, while summer can cause stress from trying to do too much in each day – the light fools us into believing we are capable of it.

See Mark Zuckerberg’s glossy new $300M, 287-foot superyacht ‘Launchpad’

All aboard S.S. Facebook.

Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly gifted himself a $300 million megayacht, dubbed “Launchpad,” ahead of his 40th birthday.

The staggering 387-foot-long vessel was seen floating at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after arriving at its berth earlier this week, The Sun reported Thursday.

The multi-layered luxury ship’s sleek exterior was designed by Espen Øino International and boasts a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure, according to SuperYacht Times.

Reportedly ranking as the 45th largest yacht in the world, the interiors are just as aesthetically pleasing and reportedly executed by Zuretti Interior Design company, a France-based company specializing in unique and custom yacht design.

The breathtakingly beautiful floater stands out with a navy blue theme matching an American flag perched proudly on its wood-paneled stern.

There are several outdoor areas where the social media maven will be able to relax with his family and the indoor levels feature glass paneling allowing for tons of natural light.

There also appears to be a helipad perfect for whenever the Facebook co-founder wants to travel to his vessel by air.

The Feadship-built yacht, built in 2022, can comfortably fit 24 guests aboard, requires a crew of 48, and is said to cost $30 million a year for upkeep and usage, according to Superyachtfan.com .

Boatworld insiders have been buzzing with speculation that Zuckerberg is the owner of the newly minted mega-cruise ever since it made its main voyage from the Netherlands last week.

The tech titan was spotted touring the Russian-commissioned megayacht in early March, though the impressive boat didn’t arrive stateside until this week due to sanctions, according to The Sun.

The website reported that Zuckerberg purchased the pricey yacht – along with its own $30 million partner boat — most likely as an early 40th birthday present to himself.

The boat reportedly traveled to Florida after being granted special permission to be imported just weeks ahead of Zuckerberg’s birthday on May 14.

Zuckerberg’s yacht is just 30 feet shorter than the length of fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos’ 417-foot megayacht Koru, which the Amazon boss snagged for a whopping $500 million.

Zuckerberg’s rep did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
