Malta Yacht Charter, Malta

The small archipelago of Malta is a wonderful addition to any Mediterranean luxury yacht charter and the destination is famous for its extensive variety of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including megalithic temples that are some of the world's oldest free-standing structures. Here, the past is mixed with the present in a passionate display of life.

Wherever you go on the island of Malta, you'll find stunning architecture and scenery. Many people don't realize that Malta is more than just a historical gem; it's also an outstanding sailing yacht charter destination in the Mediterranean with warm sunshine and clear blue skies from April through to October. The Maltese Island of Malta, Gozo and Comino provide a charming cruising ground for your Malta luxury yacht charter vacation.

Countless spas, boutiques and luxury boutiques line the streets of the towns in the world's fifth most densely populated country, ensuring that when you are not cruising by motor yacht or sailing yacht, you won't have far to travel to reach the next amazing exhibition. As well as the modern amusements and ancient relics, Malta has a great selection of beautiful beaches and secretive coves for hours of water sports in peace and privacy.

Malta, Comino and Gozo make up the Maltese archipelago and the islands lie between North Africa and Sicily where the Western Mediterranean and Eastern Mediterranean meet.

From the main island of Malta, travel to Comino, where there are some amazing wreck and cave dives that are home to seahorses as well as octopi, stingrays and parrotfish. Have the island all to yourself for a romantic dinner on the beach, or hike along the tracks and discover such sights as the Santa Maria Caves, St. Mary's Tower and other buildings erected in defence of the island during WWII.

The final island of Gozo will take you away from the noise and bright lights of modern civilisation for a natural world completely in harmony with itself. The stone buildings add to the already strong character of this region that feels from another time, and holistic lifestylers, fitness fanatics and those just looking to switch off will find what they were searching for here.

Malta is a truly unique and wonderful yacht charter area with impressive buildings and landscapes, superb coastlines and seascapes, and warm and friendly locals: To organise your Malta luxury yacht charter or to speak to a professional broker about your options, please contact CharterWorld.

More about this part of the Mediterranean Sea

Malta is placed in the Middle of the Mediterranean Sea on the cusp of the Western Mediterranean and Eastern Mediterranean luxury yacht charter grounds. Nearby, Sicily and the Aeolian Islands have copious volcanic sites that have created unique landscapes and fertile soils that have been put to use as vineyards.

Also close by is the Amalfi Coast, with such sites as Naples and the charming clifftop town of Ravello.

Scattered in the Mediterranean Sea are the islands of Linosa, Lampedusa and Pantelleria for even more beautiful beaches and pristine natural parks. Tunisia could also be included in an itinerary to Malta, adding a destination that has familiar aspects to be found in other magnificent Mediterranean destinations while still remaining wonderfully unique.

Malta Yacht Charter Experiences

A Malta luxury yacht charter is the perfect way to efficiently take in all sites across the islands, and sailing yachts and motor yachts, mono-hulls and catamarans of all sizes are suited to the excellent anchorages and well-designed modern ports.

From the moment you arrive in Valletta Harbour your group will immerse themselves in charming and grandiose buildings that loudly announce the magnificent history of this small island, and this popular tourist destination is awash in alluring cafes and restaurants as well as boutiques, international brand stores, galleries and museums.

Valletta on its own has plenty to fill your days: Begin your exploration of its history in the unmissable National War Museum in Fort St. Elmo - while Malta has several war museums, this is the most comprehensive and well maintained. Next door, the Knights Hospitallers is worth a look and is an atmospheric venue for events, while out in the fresh air the highly maintained Lower Barrakka Gardens give magnificent views out over the harbour. Visitors venturing into the town centre have the opportunity to enter The Grandmaster Palace Courtyard to learn more about the city's storied past. As the sun sets, discover the vibrant bar and club scene along the waterfront.

As you leave behind the crowds and spend your time in transit dining alfresco or sunbathing on the sundeck, and find a serene cove to anchor and sleep in peace surrounded by the sounds of nature.

Inland, Mdina is known for its bars and pedestrianised shopping streets, and in particular for the Silent City where there are historical treasures and a collection of Caravaggio paintings. St. Paul's Catacombs is also an incredible and worthwhile tour before your head down the southern roads to the 3200 BC ruins of Ħaġar Qim and the Blue Grotto, one of the most stunning natural sites in Malta.

The sleepy island of Gozo is a part of the Malta archipelago and is thought to be the legendary "Calypso’s Isle" of Homer’s Odyssey. It’s a peaceful, mystical backwater, with rugged landscape and spectacular coastline. Pull into rocky inlets or red sand beaches and spend hours entertaining yourself snorkelling, fishing and Scuba diving amongst some of the Mediterranean's best dive sites.

This destination is popular with older travellers who enjoy the peace and quiet, lack of modern development and retention of the old traditions. Many of the buildings are still made from natural stone instead of concrete so Gozo has an atmosphere all of its own.

Comino is a small inhabited island with only four people living there. Although there is a hotel, many visitors just come for the day to dive in the famous Blue Lagoon, leaving the rest of the island bays and beaches to your group. By kayak, paddleboard or tender, take your time amongst the Santa Maria and Julia caves to the west, where the white cliffs and topaz blue sea are perfect for adventurers and for artists and photographers to capture.

The Blue Lagoon is fairly busy from 10 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon, after which luxury yacht charter parties will have the place to themselves. Travel south to the natural amphitheatre of the Crystal Lagoon with its steep cliffs and glassy green water, which provides excellent seclusion for an overnight anchorage.

Things to Consider:

Yachting seasons & climate:.

Malta has an inviting year-round climate, where the winter season temperature drops to a warm average of 13°C/55°F and summer soars to a comfortable 27°C/81°F, with a high of 32°C/90°F.

From July to September the sea temperature sits around 26°C/79°F and are wonderfully warm for snorkelling, watersports and for beginner Scuba divers heading down to depths around 10m/33ft.

July is the driest month with little to no rainfall, and November through to January is the wettest season and visitors should plan their wardrobe accordingly.

Clothing to Pack For Your Charter:

Although there are some excellent beaches across the three main islands of Malta, visitors are most likely to spend their time exploring the streets of Valetta and the ruins to be found from the coast through to the interior. As such, a sturdy pair of hiking boots and a lightweight jacket is recommended, and visitors might want to include a long pair of trousers for walking along overgrown trails.

In town, smart-casual dress is typically seen for the cafes, bars and clubs as well as visiting the numerous museums, galleries and religious sites.

Main Ports and Marinas:

Valletta Port, Marsamxett Port, Bugibba Port, Cirkewwa Port, Marsaxlokk Port, Mgarr Port

Famous Restaurants & Clubs:

Inspirtions! Cafe (Valletta), The Whisky Bar (Valletta), Charles Grech Cafe & Cocktail Bar (Valletta), Twenty Two night club (Portomaso), Southport Restaurant, Cafe & Bar (Marsaxlokk), Havana Club (Paceville)

A Must See Attraction:

Grandmaster Palace Courtyard, Lower Barrakka Gardens, National War Museum - Fort St Elmo, The Knights Hospitallers, Blue Grotto

Best beaches to visit in your yacht:

Golden Sands Beach, Armier Bay Beach, Gnejna Bay, St. Peter's Pool

Local Yacht Events:

Sport Malta Regatta, Rolex Middle Sea Race

Best time to go:

Like most of the Mediterranean, the Malta yacht chartering season generally runs from April to the end of October. The summer season in July and August tends to have the best weather, as these are the hottest months with lighter winds. This is also the high season as far as yacht charter goes.

Other good times to charter your yacht is generally on either of the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October), each side of the main summer season, as the temperatures are still comfortable, and the onshore tourists have yet to arrive in their largest numbers.

Autumn can be a great time to visit when the sea temperatures are still warm and there is a significant amount of sunshine, however visitors should expect short sharp thunderstorms during the evenings of this season.

Sailing In Malta

Sailing In Malta

Taking a yacht charter in the Mediterranean is always a wise  choice offering a rich assortment of exquisite sailing destinations and  exciting itineraries to be explored. With 12Knots you are provided with  the top-class yacht charter services in a number of breath-taking  locations boasting the best sailing facilities. Malta may become one of  such sailing destinations you probably highly appreciate, both skippered  and bareboat, depending on your wish and budget.

Conveniently located in the Mediterranean Sea, Malta is an island  country occupying a group of five islands, which form the Maltese  archipelago. Three of those islands are populated, they are: Malta,  Comino and Gozo. Also, they are the biggest islands of the archipelago.  The rest two islands are Cominotto and Filfla.

Generally, Malta is geographically positioned between Sicily and the  north of Africa. Due to the mentioned position, Malta, just like many of  the Mediterranean countries, was largely influenced by cultures of both  Europe and the Middle East. That also makes the image of Malta very  much attractive on the cultural side, representing a diverse mixture of  ancient traditions that used to dominate the country during many years.

Valletta is the capital of Malta, the city located on the Island of  Malta, and considered to be the main island of the archipelago. Total  length of the coastline is approximately 197 kilometres (122 miles),  excluding the 56 kilometres belonging to the Gozo island.

Yacht charter in Malta may be a great chance to take the most of the  country’s rich culture, stunning nature, and warm, always significantly  welcoming atmosphere, as well as the kind attitude of the local people.  Absolutely, with a number of cosy marinas and luxury bays, Malta is for  those, who love sailing. Its crystal waters call to set up sails and  start exploring the Maltese islands. Besides, the area has much to offer  for those who love snorkelling and diving. So one should not miss a  great opportunity to explore the magical underwater world with its  outstanding beauties to be definitely seen.

History and Culture Of Malta

Malta is the country of various landscapes with its picturesque  tranquil bays and magnificent views of the white cliffs, rocky coastal  areas, always accompanied by the sky-blue waters and pleasant sunshine.

Despite its relatively small area size (316 km²), Malta boasts  history dating back to the ancient times. Strategically located on the  crossroads of the European and African-Asian cultural and trade  connections, Malta’s harbours had been attracting an array of nations  for many years. As a result, a number of cultures, including the Greek,  Roman, Arab, French and the British, used to rule the country up to the  1960's.

The capital city, Valletta, was established in 1571 by the Order of  Knights of Malta, who used to control Malta since 1530. Valletta still  has the ancient stone walls, which were erected in the mid-1560’s when  the fleet of the Ottoman empire lead by Sultan Suleiman attempted to  conquer the Maltese. Those impressive walls survived the both World Wars  and still are the sites to see, if enjoying sailing vacations in Malta.

The major and the official religion of Malta is Catholicism, that is  stated by the country’s Constitution. The Maltese have diverse  traditions due to the same cultural variety caused by various cultural  influences. National and religious holidays are commonly celebrated all  over the country, some towns and villages also celebrate the memorial  dates of their patron saints. One of the symbols generally associated  with Malta is the Maltese Cross. Its four points with eight arms in  total represent the eight lands the knights of the Maltese Order  belonged to.

So set sails to the Grand Harbor of Malta and enjoy your yacht  charter in the perfect Mediterranean surrounding. Feel free to explore  the passionate Malta and its unique coasts offering all of the local  charm and hospitality. Take a cruising trip to the rich ancient history  of the Maltese islands and walk by the age-old buildings and the famous  protective walls of Valletta, that is absolutely worth it!

Maltese Cuisine

As a part of the Mediterranean culinary  scene, Malta also offers a wide range of the most delicious foods and  dishes one can even dream of on a sailing vacation. During your yacht  charter in Malta you definitely must try local cuisine that has strong  Mediterranean cooking traditions and includes many vegetables and  olives. However, a number of the Maltese recipes and meals have the  influence of different cultures that used to be predominant in the  region. French, British, Sicilian and African impacts in food are still  present: people on Malta like to drink tea with milk and enjoy French  bakery.

Generally, the local food can be presented by different soups and  pasta or risotto with a variety of toppings. It can be simply fish,  grilled or baked, and served with fresh tomatoes, capers and a slice of  lemon. Visit one of the waterfront restaurants and try the most fresh  fish served from the night’s catch. There can be a list of recommended  places you may wish to check out when sailing around the Maltese  coastline:

  • Located in Valletta, it offers a spectacular interior and cozy  atmosphere. This place is also interesting for being somewhat the museum  of history of the Valletta city.
  • Palazzo Preca. Also in Valletta, famous for its seafood servings.
  • Ta’ Frenc. Restaurant, situated on the Gozo island. Known mostly for  its locally-oriented cuisine, which uses mainly traditional Maltese  ingredients.

Conditions In Malta

The climate of Malta tends to be generally Mediterranean, but more  likely subtropical, warm and mild even at winter season. The  temperature is usually around 23ºC (74°F) during the months from May to  October, and the sun shines bright mostly during the whole summer. The  hottest months are July and September, while there can be cold breezes  from the sea in the night time. But generally, in Malta it is warm even  in winter, which are not long and not so wet as well. Rainfalls may  happen in the period from October to March. In winter the average  temperature is around 14ºC (57°F). The sailing season starts here in  April and lasts to October, while the best period to sail is probably  June-October, when the weather is blessed with steady winds and  agreeable temperatures.

Sailing Conditions and Places to Sail In Malta

Definitely, taking a yacht charter in Malta is one of the best  ways to explore the rich and diverse cultural heritage of this  Mediterranean land. For those, who consider sailing to be the main  reason to sail, Malta offers a great choice of natural lagoons to be  discovered: the Dwejer Lagoon, the Crystal Lagoon and the Blue Lagoon,  as well as a number of magnificent bays and beautiful beaches in the  areas around the islands of Gozo and Comino. Drop an anchor in Comino to  enjoy swimming in the day-time, or make a stop to stay for a night.  Basically, all the bays of Malta are considered to be safe, and the  coasts are picturesque and worth to be explored. Navigate your itinerary  around the Maltese islands, quite easy at the point of sailing, which  at the same time does not make it worse. The northern part of Malta is  famous for its luxury beach resorts:

  • Mellieha Bay
  • Ghajn Tuffieha

One of the highlights of our whole vacation! We had the best time sailing around the gorgeous Comino island area. The boat was beautiful and clean. The crew was very attentive and made sure we had the best experience. Everything was extremely well thought-out - they provided us with a paddle board, towels and a ton of other things. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Malta

Malta Boat Trips & Tours: The 12 Best Options

Looking for the best Malta boat trips and tours for your holiday?

In this guide, you’ll find an up-to-date, tried-and-tested list of different boat tours and trips to explore Malta, Gozo, and Comino Island (and its famous Blue Lagoon).

I’m a tourist-turned-local and have taken dozens of excursions and boat tours, including the ones on this list. My goal is to help you have a memorable stay in Malta, and I only make recommendations with that goal in mind.

Taking a boat trip in Malta makes for a great day out.

Blue Lagoon Boat Tours

The stunning Blue Lagoon is located on the small Comino Island and is Malta’s most popular tourist attraction by a mile and a top destination for tours and excursions . It’s a real gem in the Mediterranean Sea.

Famous for its azure-coloured, crystal-clear waters, it’s an absolutely stunning bay that’s visited by thousands of locals and tourists on various boat tours every year.

It’s a must-visit on most people’s travel plans to explore Malta, and while you *can* get there by ferry, it’s a LOT more comfortable taking a boat trip there. The bay itself only has a very small sandy beach that’s usually packed with people who are there on day trips. In fact, although more expensive, a private boat is the way to go (and I’ve included a great recommendation further below from personal experience).

Blue Lagoon boat tour

The standard Blue Lagoon catamaran boat trip.

  • From €25 p.p.
  • Couples, families with kids, small groups

This Blue Lagoon full-day tour departs from Buġibba (although you can book transport from other locations in Malta). They take you straight to Comino’s Blue Lagoon, passing by St. Paul’s islands on the way. You’ll also stop at the lesser-known Crystal Lagoon Malta and some of Comino’s sea caves on the way back.

COUPON: Get a discount with the coupon code MALTA5 .

There are a few options to choose from:

  • Hopping on the larger catamaran for the day trip. This catamaran has slides and underwater windows, making it a great option for families with kids. This tour takes around 6-7 hours.
  • Hopping on the same catamaran but in the late afternoon for a sunset cruise . This tour takes around 4 hours and would be my personal recommendation . The Blue Lagoon gets VERY busy during the day in the high season, so it’s a great way to enjoy this magical spot at a much quieter time when most of the other tour operators would’ve sailed back to Malta for the day.
  • Taking the smaller catamaran, the Sea Odyssey , which also gives you a full-day trip with a morning departure time.

Both boats provide seating and sunbeds and an indoor, air-conditioned area with a small kiosk to buy food and drinks from. There are separate male and female toilets on board as well.

During your stay, you don’t have to stay on the boat. You can also wander around some of the coastal and country trails that the small island of Comino has to offer. It’s something I would only recommend in spring and autumn, however, since there’s very little opportunity to find shade on the island.

Catamaran boat tour

Beaches and Bays catamaran tour to the Blue Lagoon.

  • Sliema / Buġibba
  • From €65 p.p.
  • Couples, small groups

Catamaran 1 (Sliema): This Catamaran Cruise (full-day tour) offers a laidback cruise to Comino and, unlike the next option, is all-inclusive with an open bar (beer, wine, soft drinks, water) and a cold buffet lunch (cold cuts, cheeses, salads, and seasonal fruit).

You’ll be hopping on a large and spacious catamaran (with fewer people than the standard trips) that sails to Comino. While the Blue Lagoon is the main destination, you’ll cruise past other parts of the island on the way, including some of its hidden coves.

Catamaran 2 (Buġibba): If you’d like to combine a visit to the Blue Lagoon at Comino Island with swimming at some of Malta’s most beautiful bays, the Beaches and Bays tour is a great option.

Although a little more expensive, this Beaches and Bays boat tour by catamaran has two big benefits over the first option.

  • It’s a lot more spacious and comfortable, with spaced-out, comfortable sunbeds on the boat’s sun deck, chill music, and an (optional) BBQ lunch on board.
  • You get enough time at the Blue Lagoon but also get to swim at other beautiful bays on the main island’s northern coast, for example, (my personal favourite) Għajn Tuffieħa Bay and Golden Bay. ( Note: Actual bays visited can differ depending on the wind direction.). A stop at the Crystal Lagoon is also included.

Available from May through to September, I highly recommend going for this option if you’re travelling as a couple or with a group of couples. This is currently one of the best Malta boat tours you can book.

TIP: The lunch is worth the upgrade, and drinks on board are reasonably priced.

Two-Master Boat from Sliema

Two-master boat trip from Sliema to the Blue Lagoon.

  • From €75 p.p.

If you’re staying in Sliema and want a full-day boat tour of Comino’s famous Blue Lagoon, this two-master boat tour is a great option.

Enjoying a laid-back vibe on an impressive 38-metre-long wooden Turkish Gullet boat, it’s a popular choice for a day out at sea. The tour departs from the Sliema Ferries front, which is very convenient if you’re staying in Sliema, Gżira, or nearby St. Julian’s. That spot is easy to reach on foot or by bus. You can also get transfers to other localities when booking this option (which comes at an additional fee).

What’s included in this boat tour:

  • Free drinks during the entire cruise (water, soft drinks, wine and beer)
  • Hot and cold buffet lunch including steak, a selection of vegetables, cold meat cuts, different salad varieties and fresh fruit to suit different dietary requirements.

Aside from the obvious destination (the Blue Lagoon), you’ll also anchor at a few secluded bays near Gozo. And on the way, you get great views of the capital city Valletta, St. Julian’s, St Paul’s Bay (and St. Paul’s island), and Mellieħa Bay while sipping a drink.

The tour starts at 9:15 am and returns at Sliema by 5 pm, making it a 7-hour and 45-minute trip.

Private boat tours to the Blue Lagoon

Interested in a more quiet and private experience at your own pace?

Private boat tours can be a great option, where you can rent your private boat for a few hours, half a day or a full day. It’ll be just you and your company, plus the captain on board, and you can moor away from the most crowded parts of the bay to enjoy the crystal-clear waters at Comino.

The departure location can be chosen from various locations along the North coast of Malta as well as Gozo, so you have a lot of flexibility. For example, you can customise the itinerary to spend a little less time at the busy Blue Lagoon and head over to the stunning – and much quieter – Crystal Lagoon nearby.

Snorkelling equipment to explore the nearby marine life is provided, and there’s an ice cooler on board for your drinks. You can ask the captain to stop at different spots for food or bring your own food if you prefer.

This provider specialises in this type of boat tour to the Blue Lagoon, and they’re an easy recommendation to make from personal experience . With a highly customisable trip plan, friendly skippers and an overall hassle-free experience, this is just what you want on a well-deserved holiday.

This type of boat tour is in high demand and has limited availability. Book well in advance to avoid missing out!

Sunset private boat

Private sunset boat trip to the Blue Lagoon.

  • Ċirkewwa or Mġarr Harbour (Gozo)

This is a 3-hour private boat trip at the perfect time of day and long enough to enjoy a quieter visit on your own boat

Half-day private boat

Private boat trip to the Blue Lagoon.

Also a 3-hour private boat, but during the morning or afternoon (which you can choose).

Full-day private boat

Full-day private boat tour to the Blue Lagoon.

Rent a private boat for a full 6 hours, with a custom itinerary and everything you’d expect on your day out.

Gozo and Comino combo boat tours

If you’re planning on visiting Gozo (you absolutely should, even if it’s just for half a day!), these are a few full-day boat tours to consider

You can combine a visit to Comino and its Blue Lagoon with a land tour of Gozo in a single (easy-paced) day. It’s a great way to get a taste of both, with enough time to enjoy the experience and not feel like a rushed day out.

Blue Lagoon & Gozo Tuk Tuk Sunset Tour

Tuk Tuk boat tour to the Blue Lagoon and Gozo by sunset.

  • Anywhere in Malta
  • From €79 p.p.

This (all-inclusive!) Blue Lagoon and Gozo Tuk Tuk tour runs from mid-May to mid-October and is great for both couples and groups.

It’s a full day out (6-7 hours excluding transport) and is provided by a renowned Malta tour operator that consistently gets 5/5 reviews—a fun day out in safe hands.

This is also a great option if you don’t like early morning wake-ups on your holiday. The tour starts in the early afternoon!

You’ll start off with a visit and swim at the Blue Lagoon on a boat tour there that departs from Ċirkewwa, in the northernmost part of Malta. Don’t worry; transfers from your place of stay are included in the tour, so all you need is to prepare for your day and be at the pick-up point on time!

The brightly-coloured Tuk Tuks that will take you around in Gozo can seat up to six passengers and are driven by a local expert who will tell you all about the island on the way.

Included in the price:

  • Transport from your place of stay (anywhere in Malta or Gozo)
  • 2+ Hours at Comino’s Crystal and Blue Lagoons by boat
  • A light traditional Gozitan dinner
  • A sightseeing tour of Gozo on 6-seater Tuk-Tuks, chauffeured by a knowledgeable driver who will take you to some of the most beautiful sights on the island. This tour takes you to Sanap Cliffs (Munxar), Xlendi Bay, Cliffs and Caves, Dwejra Bay (including Fungus Rock, Inland Sea & Watch Tower), Ta’ Pinu Basilica and Shrine (Għarb), Wied il-Għasri, Xwejni Salt Pans, Qbajjar and Marsalforn Bay.

TIP: During the rest of the year, you can still get a regular Tuk Tuk tour of Gozo , combined with a boat tour past Comino and its main sights, but you won’t be able to enjoy a swim stop at the Blue Lagoon. (It’s a little too cold for that anyway outside the high season.)

Blue Lagoon & Gozo Quad Bike Sunset Tour

Quad bike boat tour to the Blue Lagoon and Gozo by sunset.

  • From €110 p.p.

Looking for a bit more adventure? Taking a Quad Bike tour of Gozo allows you to see some of the island’s stunning natural beauty, landmarks and secluded beaches, and makes for a fun day out.

You can get an all-inclusive Sunset Tour by Quad Bike of Gozo , which starts with a boat tour that includes a refreshing swim stop at the Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon. This tour runs between 15th May and 15th October.

It also takes you past a few of the sea caves around the beautiful Comino Island on the way to Mġarr Harbour.

There, you’ll be welcomed by your lead driver, who knows Gozo inside out and will tell you all about the stops on the way. They’ll take you through a safety briefing and provide everything you need to hop on your quad bike first.

These quad bikes are high-powered 570cc ATV vehicles that can seat a driver (min. 21 years of age) and a passenger. It’s a unique combo tour, perfect for couples and small groups.

Just like the Tuk-Tuk version of this tour, this is included in the price:

  • 2+ Hours at Comino’s Crystal Lagoon and Blue Lagoons by boat
  • A light traditional Gozitan lunch
  • A sightseeing tour of Gozo, on quad bikes, following a lead driver to some of the most stunning landmarks and into nature, off the beaten path. This tour takes you to: The Church of St. John The Baptist (Xewkija), Sanap Cliffs (Munxar), Xlendi Bay, Cliffs and Belvedere, Knights’ Wash houses (Fontana), Dwejra Bay and its watchtower, Fungus Rock and Inland Sea (San Lawrenz), Wied il-Mielah Window (Gharb), Wied il-Ghasri, Xwejni Salt Pans, Qbajjar (and the stunning salt pans), Marsalforn Bay, and Tal-Mixta cave (Nadur).

TIP: Just like the Tuk Tuk variety, you can get a regular Quad bike tour of Gozo outside of the summer season, which is also a lot of fun. You’ll also get a short boat trip that takes you past the Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon but won’t include a (swim) stop.

Blue Lagoon & Gozo combo

Getting to the Crystal Lagoon on a boat tour is the easiest way.

  • From €30 p.p.

If you prefer having a wander around Gozo yourself, you can take this low-cost boat tour that also combines a stop at the Blue Lagoon with 3 hours of free exploration in Gozo.

What you’re paying for is half a day in Comino and transport to spend the afternoon on Malta’s sister island. There are plenty of options for transport once you arrive at Mġarr Harbour in Gozo, from hop-on/hop-off buses to regular public transport, Ubers/taxis as well as bike rental.

You can also opt to book transport in advance, which will take you to either Victoria (the largest town and home to the Citadel of Gozo) or Xlendi (a picturesque bay in the South of the island).

This is an option to consider, but I would personally recommend either of the previous two options .

Round Malta & Gozo boat tours (full day)

Round malta cruise (full day).

Taking a round Malta day cruise on a Turkish gullet.

Being a small island nation, part of Malta’s charm and natural beauty is its surrounding sea.

Hopping on a boat tour is a great way to tour Malta along its impressive coastline while relaxing in the sun.

This Round Malta Cruise is a well-reviewed full-day tour (10 am – 4:45 pm on Tuesdays and Fridays ) that takes you all around the island. Heading clockwise around Malta, you’ll depart from Sliema to take in the sights of Valletta and its Grand Harbour entrance, Marsascala and St. Thomas Bay, St. Peter’s Pool (bay), Marsaxlokk and Delimara Point, the Blue Grotto (more on that spot below), Dingli Cliffs, Anchor Bay and Popeye Village (named after the 1980 movie with Robin Williams that was shot there).

You’ll then head to Comino and its Blue Lagoon, followed by Mellieħa Bay, St. Paul’s Bay and its island, St. Julian’s and returning to Sliema. Throughout the trip, you’ll be provided with commentary on the various spots you’ll be passing from.

Included in this tour:

  • A well-catered buffet lunch, including free drinks (water/soft drinks)
  • Free bottled water during the tour
  • Optional: Transport to/from your place of stay.

Round Gozo Cruise (full day)

Round Gozo full day cruise.

  • From €70 p.p.

Malta’s sister island is known for its natural beauty, and this trip is a great way to view some of Gozo’s magnificent bays on the sea.

This Round Gozo Cruise tour boat sails from Sliema, past Comino and onto several of Gozo’s bays, with a route depending on weather conditions. Stops often included are the stunning Dwejra Bay (southwestern coast) as well as Ramla Bay and other, more secluded beaches in the North of Gozo.

Valletta Harbour Cruise

The Valletta Harbour Cruise is a popular boat trip for visitors to Valletta.

If you’d like to explore Valletta’s harbours specifically, you can hop on one of the most popular Malta boat tours: The Harbour Cruise .

This Valletta harbour cruise tour takes you around the two natural harbours on either side of Valletta: Grand Harbour (on the side of The Three Cities and the Valletta Waterfront) and Marsamxett Harbour (on the side of Sliema). With a trip time of around 90 minutes, you can get guided commentary in English and German while taking in the views.

These cruises depart from Sliema Ferries (Valletta-facing seafront) three times a day: At 10.30 am, 11.40 am and 12 pm. There’s a stop along the way at Kalkara (near the Three Cities) where you can get off to explore the Esplora Interactive Science Center (great for kids) and hop back on at the next departure time. (Applicable only to the first two trips of the day).

(More info here: Valletta harbour cruise tours .)

Blue Grotto Boat Tour

Combine a Blue Grotto Malta boat trip with a visit to Marsaxlokk.

The Blue Grotto sea cave , with beautiful rock formations, is one of Malta’s most popular destinations because of its natural beauty. Because the sea floor inside is covered in light-coloured sand, the sunlight that shines into the cave reflects on its ceiling, creating a stunning effect.

Since it’s a little remote (in the South of Malta), it’s a destination best combined with another, and a great combiner is to stop at Marsaxlokk.

This half day Blue Grotto and Marsaxlokk tour makes this combination very easy to do and is held on Sundays. Apart from getting a boat tour into the Blue Grotto cave, you’ll head to the fishing village of Marsaxlokk to take in the views and visit the Sunday market.

Malta boat party

  • Solo travellers, couples

Interested in getting a unique experience in Malta’s nightlife scene in summer? Take a Boat Party for a really awesome night out.

You’ll depart from Sliema (Valletta-facing side) at around 18:30h, boarding a large wooden gullet (type of boat). As the sun sets, you’ll be enjoying some great music and dance, drink in hand and cooling down with the sea breeze. You’ll be back in Sliema at around midnight, but you can join the afterparty in the nearby Paceville area of St. Julian’s.

More info here: Malta boat parties .

  • Open bar with spirits, beers and soft drinks
  • DJ and great music
  • Jump and swim in the sea at one of the stops on the way
  • Games on board.

Boat Tours to Sicily

Mt. etna and taormina.

The beautiful town of Taormina: A great option to visit for day trips from Malta to Sicily.

With this Malta to Sicily day trip , you can take a large catamaran that sails from Valletta to the port of Pozzallo in Sicily. Once you arrive, you’ll board an air-conditioned coach that will be taking you around some of the best places on the island.

This trip is organised on Thursdays and Sundays from May to September, and on your trip you’ll visit sites including:

  • The beautiful seaside town of Taormina
  • Mount Etna – Europe’s largest and most active volcano.

Syracuse, Marzamemi and Noto

Noto is a beautiful village and great destination on tours from Malta to Sicily.

Alternatively, you can take this Malta to Sicily trip that takes you to the beautiful villages of Syracuse, Marzamemi and Noto. This is a quieter tour package option, with a lot less time on the road and with more rural views and small village visits to Sicily.

Organised on Wednesdays and Fridays (also from May to September), this option also takes you across to Sicily on a large catamaran.

Where do you get the boat to the Blue Lagoon in Malta?

You can get the boat to the Blue Lagoon in Malta from Marfa or Ċirkewwa (basic ferry, long drive), or you can get a boat trip from Sliema (easy to reach from St. Julian’s and Valletta) or Buġibba (within walking distance from St. Paul’s Bay and Qawra).

What are the best boat trips in Malta?

The best boat trips in Malta are cruises around the islands of Malta and Gozo, the Blue Grotto in the South of Malta, and the Blue and Crystal Lagoons on Comino Island.

Our business is a Family business offering Sailing Yacht Charters and Boat Rentals around the islands of Malta and beyond.

We have been running our Malta Yacht Charter, Boat Rental and Sailing activity since 2010 and we are passionate about what we do. We strive to deliver an exceptional service to all our customers whilst our boats and sailing yachts are maintained to the highest standards. Customer testimonials as well as Trip Advisor Reviews are proof to the passion that we have about our boat and our business.

What our customers say

Hi David, Just wanted to pass on our thanks to your organisation for the private sailing boat charter we took yesterday skippered by Tino. The yacht was wonderful as too was the scenery but what really made the trip was Tino. He was exceptionally polite, knowledgeable and professional. His sailing skills are second to none. He took great pride in his job and the boat that he was in control of. He even caught a fish for us and was explaining to my young son in great detail all about Maltese fish – not to mention all sorts of details along the way. We certainly would have no hesitation in recommending your Malta Private Sailing Yacht Charters and Private boat rentals in the future.

Clint Waters - Melbourne, Australia

Dear David, We had a lovely time sailing around Malta with Tino. MoonSong is an awesome sailing yacht, you should be very proud of her. As for Tino, we can’t say enough good things about him. He was a great tour guide, telling us about the history of Malta as we sailed passed its battlements. He was a very able sailor, avoiding weather and making us feel comfortable and safe on the boat on a day with ever changing weather. The meal was tasty and the portions generous. Thank you for helping to make our Private yacht rental for Sailing in Malta the best day of our vacation! Kind regards,

Jane & Jeff Schmitz - San Diego, CA. USA

Thank you David for a fantastic sailing week yacht charter on the Moonsong! Both me and my family was very satisfied with your lovely boat and with the skipper Raymond.

Peter Iburg & Family - Sweden

David, Thanks again for the great time on the full day sailing boat charter to Comino Island. I own a sailboat and sail on the Chesapeake Bay in the U.S. Having an opportunity to sail in the Mediterranean Sea with an experienced captain in a very well maintained and equipped boat made for a wonderful day. Changing course of the boat when you heard of our interest in St. Paul to show us St. Paul’s Bay and his statute and all the other information/history you shared about Malta made the day very interesting for my wife, son, and I as well.

Ken Baker - United States

Good morning David, i wanted to let you know that we took a Sailing Yacht Charter this week with yourself and had the best day of our vacation. We booked our sailing yacht charter with Christina and our skipper for the day charter was Alex who i might add was fantastic. He made our trip magical his knowledge of the sailing boat and the sea was second to none. Every one on board the yacht has not stopped talking about our boat trip. This was my first trip to Malta but it won’t be my last on my next visit i will be using your service on one of your boats again without hesitation. Please send thanks to your good lady wife who i understand prepared our wonderful lunch.  Thank you once again David.

Dear David, Just a short note to say thank you. We had an amazing charter on-board one of your yachts. Charlie was an amazing host, his sailing skills were great and the food on board was great and truly appreciated – well prepared from very good ingredients. Having a day out at sea on a private sailing yacht charter was absolutely lovely.

Toni Immanen

Hi David, Just wanted to say how much we enjoyed today on board your sailing yacht during our day charter. Just enough wind to sail and with your skipper’s help – found a lovely place to anchor off St Paul’s islands. The Skipper was fun to be with and his stories made our sailing day charter one remember for a long time. Thanks again for sorting everything.

Adam, Adam & Louise – United Kingdom

Hi David. I just wanted to say what a lovely afternoon we had sailing on your beautiful boat. Staffan was so nice and explained a lot of the history of Malta he was so charming and we were all so relaxed. It’s really made our holiday so very special. We can’t wait to come back and book a Private yacht charter with you again in August. Thank you so much for the great sailing yacht charter experience and please pass on my thanks to Staffan.

Zoe Gregory - London, UK

We chartered the Beneteau Cyclades 43.3 sailing yacht. The boat is in immaculate condition and boasts of all the facilities you would need/expect to find on such a boat. The Captain was David who is the owner/operator. David is a very experienced captain and knows the waters around Malta, Gozo, and Comino inside out. From the minute you step foot on the sailing boat you immediately feel at ease knowing that you are in very good and capable hands. David’s pleasant personality, coupled with his polished professionalism as well as his thorough knowledge of the Maltese Islands made for a fantastic day charter out at Sea. A true 5 Star experience. Thank you David. I would certainly recommend Sailing Charters Malta to anyone wanting to charter a yacht in Malta and will definitely be using their services again very soon.

Martin Spiteri - Malta

We had a great time sailing on our day trip on 7th August on your boat. Tino was excellent, nothing was a problem. We were especially grateful for the attention he paid to the two children in our party, making sure they were always safe but enjoying themselves. Thank you for the cake too! Highly recommended yacht charter.

Hayley Grice - United Kingdom

Dear David, I would like to drop you a line highlighting our much enjoyable experience during our sailing boat charter last Tuesday. The day started with very light wind but then had favourable windy conditions late afternoon on our way back. So, being relatively a first ‘full’ sailing boat experience for us we had a great time on board. However, I (we) must admit that it was Tino who made the day for us. His unwavering interest and intensity with which he addresses all boating/seamanship issues are second to none. His ease of hands-on approach together with his personality made our day one to remember. Not to mention that the boat was spotless clean and in best shape. Hats off to Tino. I am positive that your company will keep thriving with people like Tino on board. He is an asset through and through. Keep up the good work. Finally, we look forward to sailing again on your yacht in the future.

Anthony Scicluna - Malta

We spent the day sailing on a lovely 43 foot sailing boat which we rented from Sailing Charters Malta Ltd for our Private Yacht Malta Charter event. The Skipper for the day was David who is also the owner. Everything went smoothly from beginning to end. The boat was in perfect condition; clean from top to bottom & everything was in perfect working order. David made our trip one to remember. His expertise and friendliness throughout the trip made it the perfect day out. We will surely be using Sailing Charters Malta again and would definitely recommend this company for a Malta Yacht Charter. Truly a 5 star yacht charter experience…..Keep it up!!

Liz Baker - Malta

Hi David, We wanted to thank you for our private sailing trip when in Malta. Everything was wonderful, we especially wanted to thank Tino for showing us around. We have worked with many skippers but he tops our list. Thanks again.

Aylin E. Cicek

Hi David, So sorry for the late reply but was having some difficulties with my phone whilst in Malta. We are home now and back at work. Thank you so much for the photo, we will all treasure it forever. Last Thursday’s boat trip was amazing. We all had such a fabulous day sailing. From the moment of arrival until we left, we were all made to feel so welcome and looked after and would not hesitate to charter from you again. Alex was a brilliant host and his sailing skills are simply amazing. So informative. We asked so many questions and he was able to answer every one of them. He looked after us so well. The food was phenomenal, please thank your wife for preparing it for us, we ate heartily and were so full after. I cannot praise your company enough and will be writing you a review on Tripadvisor. All 8 of us had the most wonderful sailing day charter on your yacht which we will never forget. Thank you so much again

Tina Sharp - United Kingdom

I am an American Citizen temporarily living in Malta and have chartered a sailing boat twice with Sailing Charters Malta (Jeanneau 32, Beneteau 43). Sailing Charters Malta is an excellent boat & yacht charter service that i would strongly recommend to anyone wishing to experience Malta, Gozo, or Comino in a private setting from the beautiful Mediterranean. The service is very punctual and responsive to initial inquiries and specific requirements of the client. For both of my Malta Charters, the Captain was the Owner / Operator of the boat and were very technically qualified with life knowledge and experience sailing the Maltese Islands. Having exposure to boat ownership and operation in the United States, I would describe both of the boats that i chartered to be in impeccable condition. I would like to close with a special Thank you to David for the excellent day and memories with my parents who are visiting Malta to celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

Tim Baker - United States

Dear David, I hope this e-mail finds you well. We arrived safe on Friday at home and we are happy to be back after our holiday in Malta and after having spent a day sailing on your yacht. Tomorrow the real life will start again and before we are completely absorbed by it, I wanted to say thank you again for the great day my family and I spent with you on your boat. Many thanks to your wife for the delicious food she prepared for us. I wish you and your family all the best and much success! Best regards.

Ricardo Bernasconi & Family - Sweden

What a relaxing day on a boat! I do recommend to anyone who is looking for a great Malta sailing yacht charter service and in particular, to spend a day to unwind and chill.

Mark Grech - Malta

Dear David, We are now back in England having had a lovely holiday in Malta celebrating our ruby wedding anniversary. I want to write to thank you for your contribution to making it such a successful event. Your no fuss yet organised approach leading up to the day sailing on your yachts on a private charter was very reassuring, your instructions clear and precise. Moonsong was a lovely boat and Tino a most able and knowledgeable skipper. Alex and I were so happy he had worked with Birdlife and that he could help us identify the birds we came across whilst sailing. We were also all impressed by his general knowledge that made the trip so much more interesting. He went beyond providing us with an amazing day charter on a boat.  Thank you also for being there to meet us in person in the morning and for the lovely food you provided. Congratulations to the cook. The whole family had a most enjoyable time during our private yacht hire and we would certainly look you up should we want to repeat the experience on your yacht.

Rose Krzyz - United Kingdom

Hi David, Just wanted to thank you for the sailing yacht charter yesterday. We had a great time on your boat and will hopefully be back next year for another day of sailing. I will also pass on your details to more of my friends from Australia who are keen to visit Malta and do a sailing yacht charter. Thanks for a great day.

Adam Zen - Australia

Dear David, We have just returned from our wonderful day sailing on your yacht and what an amazing day we had. I would like to let you know how really friendly and helpful we found Tino, nothing was too much trouble. He was full of great information and also was wonderful with the children, they will not forget today in a hurry. We even had a lovely freshly caught fish for supper on the way home. Again thank you for providing us with an excellent experience for our sailing boat charter rental from your company and please pass on our thanks to Tino.

Marina fees need to be paid at each marina you choose to dock overnight - the amount varies but you may be able to find this information in advance by contacting the marinas directly. Fuel costs depend on whether you’re sailing a motorboat or a sailboat. You can estimate fuel costs by double-checking your chosen boat’s engine, and the expected distance you aim to sail.

Sailing Guide Malta

Charter a yacht in Malta to sail over turquoise waters, discover stunning nature and experience a place full of history. Located between the island of Sicily and North Africa, it is a place shaped by different cultures, a tumultuous history and its strategically important position in the Mediterranean. The British might have only ruled Malta from 1800 until 1964, but the island has always been sought after by foreign invaders, including Napoleon Bonaparte. Visit the Ggantija Temples and the Grandmasters Palace to explore some remnants of the island's rich history and cultural heritage.

Things to do and see when sailing in Malta

Of course no trip to Malta is complete without sunbathing on the beach and tasting the incredible local cuisine, but the island has so much more to offer. Tour unique historical sites, hike some of Southern Europe’s most picturesque trails and take in the view of magical sunsets.

Activities in Malta

Rent a boat to discover the most beautiful hidden beaches in Malta

Valletta , the capital of Malta, is worth visiting for a whole day. Visit Saint John’s Co-Cathedral , which looks stunning from the outside, but even more so inside. Paintings by Caravaggio and golden ornaments from top to bottom ensure the envy of some of Italy's most magnificent Christian buildings. Another stunning site you shouldn’t miss is the Grandmaster’s Palace , former home of the Grand Masters of the Order of Malta. All this history wrapped in too much gold and art can make you a little dizzy. Why don’t you take a break? Go shopping in Republic Street and Merchant Street and grab a bite to eat.

Visit the island of Gozo . As it is the second largest island in Malta, it is more quiet and peaceful than the biggest island. Rent a boat to discover some of the most beautiful hidden beaches and coves in Malta.

Comino Island and the Blue Lagoon should definitely be on your bucket list when sailing in Malta. Famous for its turquoise water and unique rock formations, this beach will make you feel like waking up in a dream. As it is one of the most visited spots in Malta, don’t expect to have this place all to yourself. Going here off-season might be for you if you want to avoid large crowds.

Hiking in Malta is a must for all nature lovers. You can basically walk all of Gozo island and discover hidden spots of nature around every corner.

If you love scuba diving , you will love Malta. Regularly rated as one of the best diving destinations in Europe, Malta offers not only fascinating underwater wildlife but also shipwrecks that have been lying underwater for many decades. The Blue Grotto and the wreck of MV Rozi are just two of the spots you can discover on your sailing adventure in Malta.

Mellieha Air Raid Shelter : Visit the shelters that were protecting people from bombings during World War II. It is a vast network of tunnels that was mostly dug by hands.

Hike up the Dingli Cliffs for a stunning view of the Mediterranean. It is the highest point of the Maltese islands and not far from the cities of the historical capital Mdina.

Visit Marsaxlokk village , a tiny fishing village with the most beautiful fishing boats you have ever seen - one more colourful than the other!

San Anton Gardens : If you want to go for a quiet walk the San Anton Gardens are the perfect place for a stroll after a delicious lunch.

Beaches in Malta

When sailing in Malta, stopping by some of the most stunning beaches is a must! With more than 300 days of sunshine, you can be sure to catch a sunny day while vacationing here to enjoy visiting at least one of the best beaches.

Golden Bay Beach is probably one of the most popular beaches in Malta. With amenities such as public toilets, changing rooms, a place to rent your beach and lounge chairs for the day as well as plenty of restaurants located in the Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, it is the perfect place for families and people looking to relax with plenty of everyday facilities within walking distance.

Ir-Ramla il-Hamra on the island of Gozo is the complete opposite of Golden Bay Beach . No resorts, no public amenities, just pure and raw nature. Also known as the Red Sand beach and with the Calypso Cave , famous for appearing in the ‘Odyssey’, close by, you get to enjoy Maltese nature in peace and quiet.

St Peter’s Pool might not be a beach in the classical sense of the word, but as the name suggests, it is a stunning natural swimming pool. It is not super easy to find this beautiful place, but once you do, you need to jump into the crystal clear water!

Discover Malta’s marine wildlife

Whether you are looking at discovering Malta’s marine wildlife while scuba diving in one of the stunning bays or while visiting the National Aquarium, you are sure to have a fun day out. Especially if you are travelling with kids, visiting the National Aquarium, 41 tanks full of different species will surely not disappoint.

If you are part of a group of friends coming to Malta you might think about a boat hire in Malta to discover all the most beautiful places to go scuba diving.

Restaurants in Malta

From Indian to Italian cuisine, experimental dining and more luxurious dinner experiences, Malta has it all! With a close proximity to Italy, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that Italian food is particularly popular on the island.

Casual dining in Malta:

The Submarine : Looking for a quick, but delicious bite to eat before heading out on a boat? Grab one of The Submarines famous sandwiches, wraps or baguettes. Don’t worry if you’re coeliac. They offer plenty of gluten free options as well.

Claudio’s Pizzas : Pizza is your go-to comfort food? You’ll get to enjoy a cheap, mouthwatering pizza even while vacationing in sunny Malta.

Kebab Factory Qawra : The name is giving it away! Enjoy the juicy meat of a traditional kebab. Spicy flavors and a kebab made with love will make your tastebuds jump for joy. And the best part: Big portions at a low price!

Beach restaurants in Malta:

Blu Beach Club Malta is probably THE beach restaurant on the island to enjoy your dinner with a stunning view of the Mediterranean. The freshest ingredients paired with the chefs skills make this visit a culinary experience you wouldn’t want to miss.

Arzella : Located on Gozo island, this restaurant is right next to the beach. The sea is not just in sight, it is literally right next to you. Enjoy the calming sounds of waves as you enjoy a delicious dinner by the beach.

Fine dining in Malta:

LOA : A fusion of Peruvian and Japanese cuisines, this restaurant is a real treat for every gourmet. The food is undoubtedly incredible, but the experience wouldn’t be the same without the friendly staff and an elegant atmosphere.

Aki : A Japanese restaurant in Malta? This Michelin star restaurant brings modern Japanese inspired cuisine to the European South. Enjoy a variety of sushi as well as exquisite fish dishes.

Rebekah's Restaurant is another Michelin star restaurant located on the island. Elegantly presented dishes make your taste buds crave more from the first bite. A relaxing atmosphere paired with a top notch service, make this place a wonderful culinary experience you would regret missing.

Bars and Clubs in Malta

Ibiza and Mykonos are THE most renown places to party in the Mediterranean, but Malta doesn’t have to hide when it comes to a fun nightlife. Exclusive clubs, luxurious bars and beach parties are just waiting for you to join.

The Thirsty Barber : Rustic charm combined with modern elegance make this place a must-visit on your holiday in Malta. After a day out sailing around the Maltese island, this is the perfect place to wind down and enjoy a refreshing drink.

The Elvis Tribute Lounge : If you want to chase a night full of drinks and entertainment, this place is for you. As the name suggests this bar is themed according to the late American legend. Pictures of Elvis and performances by various Elvis doppelgangers make it the perfect spot for a fun night out.

Plough and Anchor , a family run bar, showcase a variety of hard alcohol next to a rustic decor that will charm you from the moment you enter. Choose from a variety of local beers to enjoy a night out with your friends in Malta.

So City Club : Want to shake your booty? Head out to this fun club to dance the night away with an amazing crowd and tasty drinks. You might wake up with a hangover the next day, but you will get to experience a night out that’s worth remembering.

Explore historical Malta

With over 7.000 years of turbulent history, Malta is a fascinating place for history lovers from all around the world. Discovering the historical sites of Valletta is just one tiny part of the country’s rich history. Head out to the Ġgantija Temples which are part of the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The ruins of the temple complex have stood strong since the Neolithic era and are older than the pyramids of Egypt. Stop by the Upper Barrakka Gardens for a beautiful view of the Mediterranean, a lovely fountain and stunning gardens. Built in the 1560s they are a testament to Maltese architecture.

Discover mystical Malta

If you want to step foot into Greek mythology and the ‘Odyssey’ in particular, you should visit Calypso Cave . It is said to be the place where the nymph Calypso kept Odysseus a prisoner for seven long years after his ship sank during a violent storm. A famous tourist attraction in Malta, the cave had to be closed for now as there is a risk of it collapsing. It might not be as spectacular as seeing the cave from the inside, but for now you can still admire it from outside.

Sailing conditions in Malta

Sailing in Malta means perfect sailing conditions almost year-round. However, July and August are the most popular months of the year for tourists. It’s sunny, the weather is dry and the sea is usually quite calm. The average temperature during the summer months is 28-34 degrees with around 12 hours of sunshine per day in July. Although the yearly average only reaches 23 degrees, the water temperature regularly measures as the warmest in European waters.

You might enjoy visiting Malta in winter, but it is too cold to go for a swim. Usually, the winds and the rain pick up in the winter season as well. We would recommend sailing in Malta in this season only to experienced sailors as you will need to know how to maneuver a ship in unpredictable weather conditions and in strong winds.

How much does it cost to rent a boat in Malta?

Renting a boat in Malta doesn’t have to be expensive. On average a gulet costs only 25.00 EUR per person per night, meaning that you only need to spend around 168.75 EUR per person per week. Most hotel rooms would be pricier. If you’re looking at renting a motorboat or sailboat, you need to pay a little more. A sailboat costs 93 EUR per person per night on average, while a sailboat would cost you approximately 250.89 EUR per person per night. Depending on the amount of rooms, the size and age of the boat, as well as the month that you are booking your boat, the prices can vary.

What type of boat is best for sailing in Malta?

Depending on the type of vacation you are planning in Malta, you should choose your boat accordingly. If you’re looking at a relaxed vacation sunbathing on board a boat, hopping from island to island to discover the most romantic hidden spots, you would choose a different boat than the one you would pick when planning a week-long party with your friends or sailing along the winds of the Mediterranean to deepen your sailing skills.

Renting a catamaran in Malta

Pros of renting a catamaran in Malta

Chartering a catamaran in Malta is one of the best ways to discover the Maltese islands. With two hulls stabilizing the boat, it is a great boat for a relaxing sailing holiday. If you’re looking at hopping from island to island and from beach to beach, chasing sunsets and exploring unique rock formations in Malta, this is the perfect boat for you.

Cons of renting a catamaran in Malta

One of the downsides of renting a catamaran in Malta is the size. While two hulls might create more stability, it also means that it is much bigger than a sailboat and requires more space when anchoring at a port. This can make it a little bit more difficult to enter a port and can also come with higher costs than other types of water vehicles.

Charter a catamaran in Malta

Renting a sailboat in Malta

Pros of renting a sailboat in Malta

Renting a sailboat in Malta is cheaper than renting a motorboat. As you can use the wind as your engine, you don’t need to worry about filling up your tank with enough fuel every time you leave the marina. Located in the South of the Mediterranean and with access to the open water, Malta receives a good amount of wind that allows you to enjoy the sailing experience.

Cons of renting a sailboat in Malta

While Malta is generally blessed with winds that get your sailboat going, nature can be unpredictable at times and you might get stuck in the middle of a sailing adventure. If you’re only sailing for a week and want to discover as many places as possible, it might be a bummer to get stuck without being able to move.

Rent a sailboat in Malta

Renting a motorboat in Malta

Pros of renting a motorboat in Malta

Renting a motorboat might be the priciest option, but it also comes with a lot of comforts that you might not experience if you would rent another type of boat. As a luxury travel option, they are quite spacious with a lot of room inside and on deck. Another advantage is their shallow frame which allows you to anchor much closer to the shore than with another type of vessel.

Cons of renting a motorboat in Malta

The cost of renting a motorboat might be a turnoff for those travelling on a tight budget - especially with prices generally being relatively low in all of Malta compared to other tourist destinations. The high fuel costs are also a downside of renting a motorboat.

What kind of boat license do you need when renting a boat in Malta?

Renting a boat in Malta is easier than you think! The good news is that you don’t need a boat licence when renting a small boat. However, if you’re looking at renting a boat with more than 30hp, you do need a boat licence.

If you are a resident in Malta, irrespectively of whether you are Maltese or a foreigner, you are required to hold the Transport Malta Nautical Licence in order to operate a boat that is up to 24m in length and with 30hp or more.

An alternative is renting a boat with a skilled skipper . The beauty of this option is that you don’t need to worry about anything when it comes to operating the vehicle. Come on board and simply enjoy your vacation. Plus: A local skipper is able to show you all the most stunning spots that you might miss otherwise.

Sailing routes in Malta

Do you plan a seven day sailing trip in Malta? Start your adventure in Valletta before heading out to Camino Island and the Blue Lagoon . The perfect place to anchor for the night is behind Cominotto . You will be protected and have a safe night on board your boat. After a good night’s sleep and delicious breakfast on deck, you will enjoy sailing around the island of Gozo . Here you should stop on some of the most beautiful hidden beaches and take a quick dip in the water before heading to San Blas where you will spend the night. Now that you have already discovered Gozo by boat and know the waters, jump on land for a long walk to discover the stunning nature and picturesque towns like Victoria or Gharb . Discover the western part of Malta which is less crowded the next day. Stop by Golden Bay for a perfect beach day before sailing further South to Blue Grotto and Filfla Island for a magical sunset. This is also the perfect spot to anchor for the night and start the morning with stunning views. From here you can go to St. Peter’s Pool for a unique experience. Sail to Valletta to explore the historical city and to enjoy local dishes, which are a great mix between Greek and Italian cuisine.

If you are looking at exploring Malta at your own pace and in less crowded areas, you might want to consider sailing around Gozo island in May or June. Less tourists and milder temperatures mean that you could find a beach that you get all to yourself.

An alternative route might mean that you start your adventure in Rome, the capital of Italy, and make your way down to Malta on a ferry before hiring a private yacht to discover Malta on your own terms.

Malta is a small Mediterranean island known for its rich history, warm climate, traditional food, culture and locations featured in popular film and TV productions. However, one of the things Malta is sought for, especially during summertime, is its many beaches. Pretty Bay is a large, sandy beach situated in Birzebbuga, a town in the south of Malta.

The beach itself is ideal for swimming or just kicking back on the sand to relax.

It has a children’s playground and an area to play beach volleyball.

If you’re feeling hungry while enjoying your time at Pretty Bay, it’s the perfect spot because there are several bars and restaurants to grab a bite just a short walk away.

beaches in malta st peter's pool

St. Peter’s Pool is also called Kalanka by locals.

This bathing place is one of the most well-known in Malta, situated in a village close to Birzebbuga called Marsaxlokk.

It is especially famous for its flat rocks, which form a pool, giving the place its name, and there are several of these pools you can dip into.

St. Peter’s Pool is usually crowded with locals and tourists during summer, especially at weekends.

If you feel hungry while here, you can buy a traditional homemade hobz biz-zejt made by a small family-owned business or a juicy burger from a local small business.

During winter, the water is quite cold you can still go there to eat by the beautiful water (although you might need a thick jacket to keep warm from the chilly weather).

malta best beaches

When travelling from St Peter’s Pool to the lighthouse in Marsaxlokk, you get to Delimara Bay.

It is a quiet, reasonably small beach which is perfect for swimming.

At the very end of this beach, there are a few salt marshes and fishing huts.

During high season, this is one of – if not the most – relaxing spots to swim in Malta thanks to its small size, which makes it peaceful to visit.

Stay at: The Shipwright’s Lodge

malta beaches beach lounges and umbrellas

Near Manikata and Mgarr, on the west coast, there are three sandy beaches: Ghajn Tuffieha Bay, Gnejna Bay and Golden Bay.

The largest of these, Golden Bay, has naturally formed dunes and red sand.

It’s the most popular beach with tourists because there is a hotel complex right next to it.

Here, many water activities occur, such as parasailing and kayaking.

The sunset from Golden Bay is unobstructed, which is what I like about this beach.

Stay at: Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Malta Golden Sands

malta beach Ghajn Tuffieha Bay

Ghajn Tuffieha is a bit further south than Golden Bay.

You can see the guard tower from the beach; the view next to this tower is breathtaking.

The rock formation across from the tower is a unique feature of this Malta beach.

If you have plans to stay on the beach for a while, you can also rent sunbeds.

This place is another perfect beach in Malta for those who enjoy watching sunsets with an unobstructed view.

Stay at: Three Bedroom Apartment Manikata

malta beaches

This beach is close to the Ramla Bay Resort, next to an area known as L-Ahrax.

It is split into two: Armier and a smaller one appropriately named Little Armier.

There are a few bars and beach clubs for a quick bite to eat.

Just a street up, there are a few campsites ideal for travelling campers to stay at or if you’re on a budget.

Go for a walk near the cliffs and pay a quick visit to the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception.

Stay at: Labranda Riviera Hotel & Spa

beaches malta paradise bay

Just a short drive from Armier, across from the Paradise Bay Resort, is a small sand beach called Paradise Bay.

The beach is a few minutes from the Gozo Ferry terminal in Cirkewwa.

This bay is quite popular in summer, and you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas here.

There’s a restaurant nearby that is also open at night during summer.

Sunset is the best time, and I highly recommend going to the sunset spot around 15 minutes away to catch a beautiful sunset.

Stay at: Paradise Bay Resort

Gnejna Bay beach in malta

Even though it is a short 20-minute walk from Ghajn Tuffieha Bay, the beach at Gnejna Bay is smaller and more charming.

This secluded beach is located deep within beautiful, natural limestone cliffs and is ideal for a post-hike dip with a beautiful view to compliment the hike.

Gnejna Bay is also great for families, people with mobility problems, sunsets and landscape photography.

Stay at: North Side Apartment 1

best malta beaches

This small creek in the south of Malta is a great swimming spot.

It’s also a lovely place to boat around its small cove.

As with most beaches around the island, there are several bars and restaurants where you can stop for a quick lunch between dips.

Stay at: Deep Blu Boutique Hotel

Another small cove in the south (and a short drive from Blue Grotto) is Ghar Lapsi.

This beach isn’t usually busy for swimming – as opposed to dining – so you can escape to this beach for peace and quiet by the sea.

Stay at: Pjazza Suites Boutique Hotel by CX Collection

best beaches malta sunset

Mista Bay is in St Paul’s Bay in the north of Malta.

This beach isn’t huge, and it’s not usually visited by tourists, which means it is an excellent spot to go to if you don’t like being around a lot of people and noise.

Its view and peace are what make this place so unique to visit.

You could also go for a nice boat trip around St Paul’s Bay from here.

Stay at: Blu Mar Sea View Apartments

Best Beaches in Gozo

best beaches gozo

Mgarr ix-Xini is a small cove close to the city of Mgarr in the south of Gozo, Malta’s sister island.

Despite being a bit of trouble to get there due to the narrow road only allowing one car to pass, the journey down to the beach is worth it once you get there.

This place is also ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving.

Stay at: 49 Sunrise Lodge

gozo island beaches

This beach in Gozo is divided into a small, sandy area near shallow water and another slightly rockier and deeper.

Near the sandy area are several seafood restaurants and cafeterias, while the rocky area has a few restaurants.

Also near the rocky area are the infamous Marsalforn sea marshes, attracting many visitors.

Stay at: Salini Suites

Ramla Bay beaches Gozo

Known by locals as Ramla l-Hamra, this sandy beach is the largest in Gozo and ideal for anyone travelling with children.

It is also easily accessible and super popular not only by locals but tourists as well.

You can also practise water sports during summer.

I also recommend exploring Mixta Cave, which is 10 minutes away on foot (it is easily visible from the bay itself).

Stay at: Ad Hoc B&B

Although this beach is not accessible by car, you can get there by renting a quad bike.

There’s a steep road leading down to San Blas, and for an adventure, the area is worth going down to on foot.

The clear, turquoise water, sand and rocks add to the charm, and the view from above is fantastic.

This beach is perfect for snorkellers, and a snack bar is always open during summer.

Stay at: Sulda Brill

This small pebbled beach is very popular with locals who live in the Qala area and the neighbouring city of Nadur.

It’s a few minutes away from the Mgarr ferry Terminal by car.

Hondoq Bay is the perfect place to refresh yourself after a day of sightseeing around Gozo.

You can rent sunbeds can during summer at an affordable price and buy snacks from the nearby cafeteria or the restaurant.

As with many beaches around the island, you can participate in some water activities.

I highly recommend taking a short hike from the beach to the panoramic viewpoint, where the view is incredible.

Stay at: Ferrieha B&B

best beaches on gozo

This bay became known in 2016 after the collapse of its most popular attraction, the Azure Window.

This is technically not a real beach, but you can still swim here.

From Dwejra, you can see the Fungus Rock, home to a parasitic lower plant that only grows on this rock.

The Inland Sea is a great bathing spot during the off-season because the water is warmer there than on any other beach.

An interesting fact about Dwejra Bay is that some scenes from the popular HBO series Game of Thrones were filmed there.

Stay at: Shanti Ghar Gozo

malta beaches gozo

This is another popular place in the town of Xlendi.

It is well-known for its water activities like boat rides, snorkelling and diving, which allows you to see the reef formation of this place, and its promenade, which is usually busy in the evenings.

Xlendi Bay is also popular for its restaurants serving traditional Maltese and seafood dishes and its cliffs.

Hike up the cliffs for a scenic view.

Stay at: San Antonio Guesthouse

Wied il Ghasri gozo beaches

Wied il-Ghasri is a small cove about a 10-minute drive away from Marsalforn Bay.

This place is not very well-known because it is well hidden, making it very peaceful for those who discover this hidden gem.

Snorkelers and divers love it for its many underwater caves, as do smugglers, who once used this hidden cove to stash their goods.

If you choose to visit in spring or winter, when the water is not warm enough, Wied il-Ghasri is perfect for walking or hiking.

Stay at: CSB Apartment

blue lagoon malta beaches sailing ship moored at the blue lagoon

I had to leave my favourite to last, the famous Blue Lagoon.

This has to be the most beautiful beach in Malta, the entire Maltese archipelago.

The beach is not in Malta nor Gozo but on the island of Comino, which you can visit by boat.

You can rent sunbeds, and there are places you can buy food and drinks.

This place is my favourite place to swim because it has several attractions you can visit on foot, such as Saint Mary’s Tower and Comino Chapel.

Stay at: Il-Bukkett B&B
