SRS Group is known for an extensive knowledge of providing unique rigging solutions to our customers in New Zealand and overseas.

Our riggers have over 25 years of rigging experience within the marine and architectural sectors. As a group, they’ve spent over half their lives engineering and running superyachts and other sailing systems across the globe. This experience has allowed us to build knowledge of the best, high-quality materials and systems on the market. All of these can be tailored to suit your job and budget.

SRS Group’s services have expanded to include work with large architectural and construction firms delivering architectural rigging services across New Zealand. This has led to successful relationships with companies such as Alaska Interiors, Kalmar Construction, Culhams Engineering, NZTA (New Zealand Transport Agency) and Ronstan.

Efficiency in rigging is paramount. When we are efficient it saves us and our customers, time and money.

This is why we offer a mobile rigging service that allows us to bring the workshop to your site and to the heart of any installation with the ability to create cables on the spot to exact measurement. Other benefits include:

  • Speeding up the project – no travelling between the site and the workshop
  • Limiting material wastage because we can make to size on site
  • Design changes can be made at the last minute

Our mobile rigging workshops are self-sufficient, and ‘on-the-go,’ which means that geographical distance is no barrier to any job. We have designed, fabricated and installed projects throughout New Zealand, with the capacity to go even further.

Cable manufacture, swaging and splicing

Cable manufacture :  Need a cable? We can make it! We can provide any length of wire cable to suit your needs.

Swaging: We are so passionate about rigging that we have imported an A400 Swager from Australia. This machine is one of a kind in New Zealand and allows us to offer up to 32mm swaging. Our riggers are highly trained and qualified for all jobs. They’re also trained in multiple site safety courses and height advanced courses.

Mobile swaging capacity 2.5mm – 32mm

Splicing: Splicing is the forming of a joint between two ropes, or two parts of the same rope. This is done by interweaving their strands to form a stopper, a loop, or a joining of two ropes together.

SRS Group has the capacity for rope splicing of any kind. Whether it’s traditional three-strand style rope, right through to modern manmade fibres, we can find the right solution for you. Yacht Rigging Services

Rig inspection, mast removal and restepping, stainless and aluminium welding, spar repairs / refinishing, replacement of standing and running rigging, rope sales and splicing, wire swaging, sales and service of furling equipment, rigging hardware and systems, winch servicing, mast electrics / wind instruments / radio antennas, lifelines and jackstays, undercover mast storage, marina / mooring lines, architectural rigging.

Listed are some of our services available. Contact us at Gulf Harbour Rigging to arrange a particular job, or to discuss your specific requirements.

Our dedicated rigging workshop is located in the Gulf Harbour Marine centre, but we can provide a mobile service Auckland wide, or to any other location by arrangement.

Yacht rigging has a finite life that varies according to many factors; correct sizing and fitting, materials used, accumulated fatigue depending upon usage, and environmental conditions.

A thorough inspection can identify defects and problems likely to lead to premature failure, and help in creating a plan to maximize the working life of rigging. This plan may include a rig tune and sea trial to ensure that any vessels particular requirements are met.

Gulf Harbour Rigging can work with you, or organise the entire job of removing your mast for any rig or hull work. Preparations such as disconnecting electrics and hydraulics, removal of sails and undoing rigging can be done by us in most cases, or for complicated systems, we have specialists available with the necessary expertise.

The lifting can be done with Gulf Harbour's boatstacker  fork hoist (up to forty footers), travelift mounted 2 ton capacity hiab crane, or for the largest masts, we can organise any size crane required.

We can undertake any repairs necessary to your mast and spars, and also provide solutions for refinishing that match expectations according to budget. Complete repainting available, or we can suggest how a basic stripping and polish can provide a cost effective alternative that is gaining popularity among owners looking to minimize maintenance time and cost.

Gulf Harbour Rigging can replace your wire or rod rigging, and also any end terminals and mast fittings required. We can supply swaged or swageless fittings for wire rigging to suit preference. Wire suppliers include Navtec from Kiwi Yachting , Kos and Hamma Strand from KZ Marine Ltd .  and Shaws Wire Ropes. Swage and swageless fitting supplied include top quality products from Swageturn NZ, SeaRig , Osman & Co., Navtec and StaLok .

We also supply and splice halyards, sheets, control lines and any other running rigging required. We advise on, and supply the right material cordage at a quality to suit the application, and at a price that is extremely competitive. Suppliers include Fineline Marine, Donaghys , and Nautilus Braids .

Headsail and mainsail furlers have made sailing a lot easier for todays sailor. However, when they stop working properly, safety can be jeopardized by the inability to get rid of sail when conditions deteriorate. Many furlers have simple geometry problems that can be rectified to make for safer operation, and Gulf Harbour Rigging has the experience with most major brands to be able to identify and provide service as necessary for repairs and routine maintenance.

We can also provide advice on the most suitable furler for replacement or an entirely new system. We sell most major brands and install, and consult with the sailmaker to ensure the system chosen functions correctly. Brands sold include Bamar , Facnor , Furlex , Harken , Reckmann , Reefrite , Profurl and Schaefer Marine . Mainsail boom furlers from Leisurefurl and Reefrite .

Winches are an essential item of equipment on every yacht, but commonly have their maintenance ignored until they show obvious signs of problems. By this time, there can be irreparable internal damage. It is generally recommended that winches be disassembled, cleaned and lubricated once a season, or in the case of aluminium models, once every three months to prevent corrosion. Gulf Harbour Rigging can take care of all servicing needs, or supply materials and advise to help owners create a plan to keep on top of this messy job themselves. New winches available from Andersen Winches , Lewmar and Harken .

Reliable navigation lights and wind instruments make night time sailing safe, along with the ability to communicate when necessary by VHF or SSB radio. Being up the mast means that they are only looked at when they give problems, and Gulf Harbour Rigging can find and fix those problems for you. We also install new equipment and even cables with the mast in place, or suggest all options possible. We supply the new wireless windgear systems from Nexus Marine , and antennas and cables from Pacific Aerials , so contact us to discuss your up mast electric needs.

Finding handling your mainsail a chore, but cant justify a boom or in mast furler? Maybe a lazy jack system will make your sail handling simpler. We can design, make up and fit a system to meet your needs.

Safety should be everybodys first priority, and lifelines are commonly neglected. Like other wire rigging, the lifelines have a limited working life, and many lifelines also suffer from unseen corrosion inside a plastic coating. End lashings are frequently left too many years in the UV light and weaken badly, and lifeline turnbuckles and pelican clips often are fatigued to the point of being unsafe. We can quote to replace these items along with jackstays of webbing or wire to make moving around the deck simple when wearing a safety harness.

Having boatbuilding or painting work done, and need your rig removed and stored? Gulf Harbour Rigging have inside storage for spars to 19 metres, and cost is no more than you will pay for storage outside. For rigs over 20 metres, or for owners wishing to perform their own rig maintenance, arrangements can be made with the Gulf Harbour Marina administration for outside space in a security monitored area.

Boats spend more time tied up than in use, so it is important that the lines selected are appropriately sized and fitted to ensure the safety of your boat while it is unattended. Gulf Harbour Rigging can supply rope and other materials for a do it yourself job, or plan and tailor make complete sets to any standard required.

Gulf Harbour Rigging not only do marine rigging, but can provide custom wire and rope work for industrial and household projects. Nautical looking handrail jobs, stainless wire support structures for coastal areas, overhead suspension projects; contact us to discuss your needs.

Yacht Rigging and Maintenance

Looking after the rig and all its associated gear is an important part of caring for your yacht. Many people see the rigging and mast as a part of the yacht that needs no maintenance. All things deteriorate with age, sometimes even when they are not used, and yacht masts and rigging are no exception.

Many cruising boat owners are not aware of when the rig was last out of their boat, let alone when the rigging was replaced. When boats are regularly raced these things are checked on a regular basis as a dismasting can be costly, let alone dangerous to the people aboard. Another interesting fact is that now insurance companies are asking when the rig was last checked and the age of the rigging. In the event of a dismasting and an insurance claim it is quite possible the insurer will decline at least part of the claim, if not all, if they consider the age of the rigging to have exceeded its expected life without being checked or replaced. A dismasting at sea is not pleasant to say the least and could end sinking the boat let alone costing someone their life.

We are often called upon to do maintenance work such as changing masthead lights and fitting new wind indicators as well as replacing halyards etc. We are also able to unstep the mast from your vessel, check and replace any gear as needed, as well as splice and replace any halyards etc, then restep the mast again. While the mast is being checked/overhauled we can repaint your mast & boom.

We can offer off-site mast storage at our Dundas Street workshop for your mast while we are working on your boat, whether it is being painted in our shed or we are working on the mast.

With a lifetime interest and experience in yachts and racing Mitch has a broad range of experience in yacht rigging, but if he has to undertake work that he feels is specialised and beyond his range of experience, he will bring in outside assistance and expertise.

We can also service your sheet winches & replace ball-bearings in blocks as well as in mainsheet and genoa cars. With Mitch’s life long interest in yacht racing he can check and advise on any gear repairs or replacement. We are also able to source any winches, deck gear, sheets or other gear the boat owner may require, including supplying and fitting wind gear, as well as performance instruments such as boat speed, depth etc. We can supply any HARKEN products at a competetive price, a brand known in the yacht racing world to be the very best, and cutting-edge technology .

Many yachts are now fitted with a roller furler headsail set-up, ideal for cruising, which makes handling headsails short-handed much easier. We can supply and fit HARKEN furlers or any other brand if the customer prefers.

We can supply and splice any halyards, sheets or rope you require, using rope made by Fineline Marine, a high quality rope made in NZ. We can supply Fineline Advantage Dyneema halyards custom-made to any colour you require – the modern equivalent to an old school wire halyard with a rope tail.

We can rerig your mast using either traditional 1×19 stainless wire or the new dye form wire such as “Hama”. We can supply  SeaRig rigging components, including swageless fittings and KZ SeaRig rigging screws, a superior option to the traditional rigging screws with exposed threads.

We are able to supply and splice your marina dock lines, spliced on the job so you have a line of the correct length with a loop on both ends. We can supply and set up weighted retrevial lines for your dock lines. No more muddy lines in the water when you come back into your berth.

We can supply chain, anchor rope and anchor swivels as well as re-splice your rope/chain anchor rode.

For absentee owners we are also able to remove sails, have them repaired and replace them back on the boat ready for use or, if your sails are off the boat, we can rig the boat ready for you to arrive and put to sea.

As a yachting NZ safety inspector Mitch can advise on the requirements for Cat inspections, for both racing and for pleasure vessels departing for overseas.

With the advent of LED lighting, when the mast is removed, if a tri-light is fitted it can be replaced with a new LED unit. This new type of light source reduces the drain on the vessels’ batteries by requiring a lot less current to operate. In many yachts with only a limited battery capacity this is important. We use quality HELLA lights, sealed for life, requiring no maintenance and are waterproof. Sometimes the ordinary bulb is just replaced with an LED bulb, a cheap option at the time, but it’s not long before the internal connections in the light-base fitting corrode, and the light doesn’t work. This is not easy to deal with when it’s on top of the mast standing in the boat, and a new light has to be mounted and wired up in place.

For all yacht owners with a tri-light on the mast head showing port, starboard and stern with a steaming light half way down the mast for motoring.  Did you know it’s not legal when the vessel is under power?  In plain terms, if you have a collision at night, be it your fault or not, it could be an escape clause for insurance not to pay out. The collision regs state the vessel, if under 12 metres and under power, has to display port, starboard and either an all-round white light at least 1 metre above the port/starboard or a stern light and a steaming light at least 1 metre above the port/starboard.

That means 2 sets of lights if you have an engine and a masthead Tri-light .

For YNZ cat inspections  port and starboard lights in the hull will not be accepted.

Another point while discussing YNZ  cat inspections – in respect to headsails, I am sometimes asked, when doing a cat 3 inspection, if a half rolled up No 1 or 2 is acceptable as a heavy weather jib. I’m afraid the answer is no! The rules state that, if a furler or head foil is fitted, the heavy weather sail has to have an alternative method of sail attachment. This can be soft shackles that go around the foil or furler body. The reason is that it is not unknown for the headsail luff rope to pull out of the groove, rendering the unit useless. The heavy sails require the vessel to be able to beat off a lee shore so they need to fit the vessel and be efficient.

Cory McLennan Managing Director

Born and raised in Greymouth, Cory had to battle harder than most to achieve his dreams of becoming a solo offshore yachtsman. But his grit and determination at just 19 years of age saw him become the youngest person ever to compete in – and complete – the Solo Trans Tasman Yacht Race.

Immersed in yacht racing from an early age, Cory has racked up a huge breadth of sailing experience: from fully crewed TP52 harbour racing, to solo offshore racing on Mini 650s, and just about everything in between. He joined the Sailutions team in 2018 and shares Kjell’s passion for developing rigging solutions that do what’s expected of them.

Kjell Andersson

Originally from Sweden, where water is a way of life, sailing is in Kjell’s blood. He’s clocked up thousands of ocean miles, so he fully understands the extreme demands placed on the rigging and hardware of offshore cruising yachts.

After sailing to New Zealand with his wife in 1998, Kjell bought into Sailutions in 2000, when it was known as Nordic Marketing, and took full ownership in 2013. He changed the name to reflect his aim to provide practical and fit-for-purpose rigging solutions to sailors, using the highest quality Swedish rigging and hardware brands: Seldén, Rutgerson and Furlex.
