The Dufour 31 is a 30.83ft masthead sloop designed by Michel Dufour and built in fiberglass by Dufour Yachts (FRA) since 1973.

900 units have been built..

The Dufour 31 is a heavy sailboat which is slightly under powered. It is stable / stiff and has a good righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a coastal cruiser. The fuel capacity is originally very small. There is a very short water supply range.

Another highly successful model, selling more than 900 from 1973 onwards, the most striking feature of the Dufour 31 is her clipper bow. Like many Dufour yachts she was innovative for her time, with a spacious, six-berth interior (including a quarterberth and a dinette double) and 1.9m (6ft 3in) headroom. The galley and chart table are both a good size. The heads is amidships. She was a cruiser-racer in her day, but now rarely seen on the club circuit. However, the powerful masthead rig gives fast cruising performance.

Review of Dufour 31

Dufour 31

Basic specs.

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The interior is like many other boats made of mahogany. Mahogany belongs to the hardwood species, known for being water-repellent and resistant to decay. It has an attractive wood grain and holds wood polish and varnish well. The boat is equipped with 6 berths, a galley and toilet facility.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

Unknown keel type

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.74 - 1.84 meter (5.71 - 6.01 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Dufour 31 is typically equipped with an inboard Volvo Penta MD7A diesel engine

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Dufour 31 is 1.98, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.4 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Dufour 31 is about 148 kg/cm, alternatively 832 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 148 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 832 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is Relative Speed Performance?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 26m 2 (279 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

Boat: Dufour 34 - Electric propulsion
Safari, and currently own a 1975 Dufour 34. They are great solidly built to high standards (when we bought the 34 we were actually looking for a 31).

Only common problem I know of on Dufours that vintage is soft decks, which are very easy to fix injecting . I never liked the original engines...

a lot. There is also one at the next that may be the most sailed boat around. I would give it a chance if the sample is sound and the right.

Boat: Dufour 34 - Electric propulsion
are VERY, VERY expensive and increasingly hard to find, and there are very few good mechanics available for things like calibrating injectors or major overhauls. I replaced the Safari's MD6B with a 1 cylinder and the 34's with , and both were good decisions (both original engines were in bad shape).

Now, if the prospect boat has an with good , that starts easily in cold , and burns without smoke, most likely you'll have plenty of engine hours before needing an or replacement. They only require minimum care and if you are handy, the most common are simple. And they are reliable when properly maintained. The hand cranking was a nice feature to have if the were depleted.

If the engine has a hard time to cold-start in 50 degrees, have someone check its . This applies to Volvos and to any other brand, mostly considering that we are talking of 37 year old engines.

One more thing to consider is that when it is time to re-power, if you switch to a different brand you'll need a new , as Volvos turn the opposite way than the others.

Despite the , I consider the Dufour 31 a fantastic boat, and I always recommend them to friends in the market.

My 2 cents...
08-01-2012, 19:49
30's that we a lot. Anyone know the PHRF of these 31's?

The engine started ok it seemed and did not appear to run rough but I was concerned about the bit of smoke mixed with the as I have not been used to that with the Yanmars.

Some indicate that Volvos tend to smoke but I would rather be sure before spending some bucks.

Anyone have an idea what a 75 in fair to good condition would go for? I reviewed some from EU but their prices are rediculous high to me for a 31' boat of that age. This one is not too bad but of course has 37 years of wear and tear to deal with.

Thanks again for all input.

Dufour 31, your thoughts

Hey everyone, it’s me again asking what you think about boats I’m looking to buy. The Pearson 30 I was looking at had some repairs to do but not too bad but has a gaz engine, would prefer diesel. 8000$ The cherubini I went to look at is a MAJOR renovation project and is located 4 hours away. 6000$ the Dufour 3800, 31 feet, I’m looking at is more expensive but is in pristine condition, it is about two hours away but it’s in the states on lake Champlain, so I would need to get it transported back here, no biggie. 24 900$ but I don’t know much about Dufour, I know they are French made boats, my uncle had one since 1975, now his sons have it since my uncle passed, I’ve been told it’s a fast boat, but don’t know anything else

sail sfbay

Based on these options I would purchase the pristine Defour 3800 SailboatData.com - DUFOUR 3800 Sailboat based on your uncle and sons experience and avoid a gasser and major repairs. After a marine and diesel engine surveys then you will know if it is the right sailboat.

Dufour for sure. Just do it.

Just took a look at the SailboatData.com info. German Frers is a well known yacht designer. He designs fast boats that are fun to sail.

Sounds like a no-brainer if it will pass inspection. $24.9k is a LOT for an old boat, however. $ 10-15k might do it.

@fred1diver I looked at boats in the Lake Champlain area a few years ago when I was in the market. That was when Mr. Trump killed free trade so the duty added I think it was 9.5%. Since this is a French made boat, you won't be able to take advantage of free trade and you will need to factor in the duty. That's a big premium to pay and there are a lot of nice boats in that price range within Canada. Dufour's are nice boats but I'm not sure I'd pay the duty premium for that one. For instance, there is a nice looking Aloha 34 in Midland for around the same price 1979 Aloha 34 Sloop for sale - YachtWorld There are even a couple of Dofour 31s in Ontario for similar pricing (including duty) 1982 Dufour 31 Cruiser for sale - YachtWorld

Careful- though they're both 31 feet long, the Dufour 31 is not the same boat as the Dufour 3800 that the OP is considering.

The Canadian taxes have been paid already

I'd rather have the Atomic 4 than the Volvo diesel. Frers is a good designer. The numbers for the 3800 do not indicate a rocket ship. SA/D of 17.11 would be underpowered. Disp./length of 231.56 is a bit chunky. A 10.66 foot beam on a 25.26 water line is a little fat. On the view of the cabin layout I believe the ends are pinched in IOR style. That is a dated design. Combined with a masthead rig it may be a bit to handle. Note that in the picture of the boat sailing there are 2 people on the rail and the sails indicate a reach. Comfort ratio of 20.55. Draft 5.58 would be too much in my old sailing ground. For me, I wouldn't pay 24.9 k for a 40 year old dated design and I would take a pass. The Pearson numbers are remarkably similar. It is an even more dated design. But Bill Shaw boats were known for their easy going ride. Nothing extreme. Maybe a bit boring. But they would take care of you. As SBD.com says over a 1,000 were built and Bill Shaw owned one for 10 years. Comfort ratio of 24.25. But I would try to get the price down. 8K for a 50 year old boat seems a bit much. It would have to survey perfectly.

Go with the pristine boat, always. The Dufour looks like a good boat but I would measure it against the "standard" in that size range (imho), the Catalina 30. More than 6,000 were produced, bigger interior, great support available, sails well, easier to sell at the end. For 25k you should be able to find a C30 in excellent shape.

Dufour's are a boat that gives a pleasing ship line to the eye. Sleek deck, sharp bow, slender lines a boat that will bring a smile as you see her in the marina. There build from 1980 to 84. I found this one for sale in Maryland 1983 Dufour 3800 Racer/Cruiser for sale - YachtWorld A boat that is 40 years old is difficult to describe as pristine.

Hi, I own a 1979 Dufour 31 and am intending to install side cokpit seats on the corner of each side of pushpit railing. Does anyone have a photograph with these done. I would also like to move my electronic displays from starboard side (next to cabin entrance) to centre above cabin sliding cover and would prefer if anyone could provide clos up photographs. regards Petar

I have a 77 Dufour 31 and have recently joined a Dufour Owners Assoc in the UK (the only one I could locate) Their web is www.dufour.org.uk They have a wealth of info, US membership is $30 which includes newsletters and all contributions from years of owners input. Charles Marchant ([email protected]) owns a 81 Dufour 31 and said there was an article in DIY marine maintenance magazine regarding one of the associations owners installing pushpit railing seating. I have not followed up on this yet but if you are not familar with DIY, their web is www.diy-boat.com. There is also a picture of the seats on the inside cover of my Spring 2005 newsletter I would be happy to copy & send to you if you provide your address. My electronics are above the companionway. I will also forward this picture along with the pushpits. Denise

Denise, Thank you kindly on information provided. I am aware of Dufour Owners Association and have joined them in April this year. I have even received an article about these pushpit railing seats, however was looking for more info in order to make good decision. A close up photograph and some info about fitting electronics above companionway would realy be good. My e-mail address is: [email protected] or [email protected] Best regards Petar

  • Description

Seller's Description

Pristine, original French-made Dufour 31 designed and produced by the renowned yacht maker Michel Dufour, whose legacy still reigns over the European sailboat world with accolades most recently including Cruising World’s 2018 Yacht of the Year. Amazingly, the exceptional layout of the original Dufour cabin remains intact today in its $500,000 models.

Premier Amour has had just three owners. There is not another like her that youll ever come across. All of the original Dufour-logo upholstery remains unblemished, crisp blue and white. The wood is immaculate and makes up the entire cabin. Modern amenities added since 2017 include central AC and heating, converted icebox to a refrigerator and freezer, smart TV and blu-ray, all new lines, sheets, canvas and roller furler with new Sunbrella.

Clean black and white lines present the classic yacht appearance that no one else will have. She is a head-turner for all the right reasons enviable grace and strength. This yacht comes ready to sail. There is absolutely nothing to pick at on this beauty. The 900-hour Volvo Penta engine is simple to service and has a fresh injector rebuild and new fuel lines.

She sleeps six with two separate berths and hanging lockers and is appointed with a full galley including gas range and oven, microwave, as well as a full head with a stunning red lavatory, shower and brand new toilet all within a comfortable 6’ 4” tall cabin. Her bulb keel with a 5-1/2 draft makes for a stable yet swift sailing experience that beginner to advanced sailors will appreciate.

An exceptional aspect of this one-of-a-kind yacht, which was designed for off-shore sailing, is the Dufour-branded drinkware, flatware and tableware. Cabin appointments include a built-in bar, captains desk and oscillating fan.

Premier Amours previous owners were yacht club commodores who raced and often won with her. The boat comes with 10 sails to take you wherever you want to go. Everything stays with the boat cockpit umbrella, life jackets, floaties and other fun stuff!

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

A LUXURY YACHT DESIGNED FOR OUTDOOR LIVING

The Dufour 48 luxury yacht has been designed for enjoying the fresh air on the ocean. Life on board is comfortable at all times, both below deck and outside.

The aft cockpit has been redesigned to offer significant space. When under way, moving around on board is simple and natural. Two tables provide a splendid spot for enjoying meals or simply relaxing at anchor.

What would a Dufour be without its aft platform? Once again equipped with a plancha grill, it comes with a host of new features. It’s a genuine outdoor galley, equipped with all the essentials.

To complete the layout, the Dufour 48 has a second cockpit, this time, forward. Here, a sun lounger can be installed for unforgettable moments of relaxation at anchor or under way.

EVER MORE MODERN LINES

The design of the Dufour 48 sailboat has been redrawn by naval architect Umberto Felci of Felci Yachts Design. The lines are fluid and the boat offers a great amount of volume. The usual coachroof glazing has been redesigned as longitudinal windows with integrated opening hatches.

EXCEPTIONAL LIGHT

Already a focal point aboard previous models of the Dufour 48, light is once again a major feature. The coachroof’s full-length windows provide constant light, which is diffused throughout the interior saloon and galley.

When the mattresses from the sun loungers are removed from the forward cockpit, large windows are revealed, letting in even more light to the yacht’s interior.

OPTIMISED INTERIORS

Depending on which version of the Dufour 48 sailboat you choose, all the furniture has been optimised to ensure unrivalled comfort. If you choose the forward or lateral galley, there is always plenty of storage space provided.

Dedicated interior saloon tables have been created by interior designer Ardizio Design. These are optimised for the three- and four-cabin versions.

In the cabins, blackout blinds are integrated directly into the ceiling. So, despite the brightness of the boat, you won’t be disturbed by the very first rays of daybreak.
