The TYPBC is amongst a very small number of NZ sailing clubs, that offer everything a new or experienced sailor could want. From Learn-to-Sail in small Optimist dinghies to national and international centreboard sailing and windsurfing, to trailer yachts and mulithulls, to keelboat racing and cruising locally and overseas.

We also run women’s sailing with a dedicated WoW (Women on Water) division. This is especially set up to allow novice sailoresses to experience Keeler sailing over a season. Many women fall in love with sailing through WoW, take a Learn to Sail adult course and continue with WoW for many years as well as joining the Wednesday night Keeler racing.  Disabled sailing is covered with regular sailing activities run by Sailability Tauranga .

The TYPBC has a number of World Champions, all of whom still come down to race with everyone and spend time talking and coaching sailing. We have National Judges to assist with rules interpretation and resolving on-the-water disputes. There are National Race Officers to help run National Championships, also YNZ trained Club Instructors to teach sailing and safety.

The club also runs Patrol Boat courses so that the parents of young sailors are able to support the racing and coaching of their children in a club patrol boat.

The TYPBC is a registered charity under the Charities Act (CC46505), is an incorporated society, and affiliated to Yachting New Zealand.

The club caters for new sailors generally starting around 7 to 8 years old, through to those who have been members for over 60 years. There are many members who “Sail for Life”.

Yachting NZ Briefings: December 1 - Clubs in the Auckland region can go sailing!

yachting nz clubs

A handful of clubs are planning their season opening on Friday, which coincides with the first day of the new Covid Protection Framework (traffic light system). It will be fantastic to see those clubs in the Auckland region being able to offer more activities under the new guidelines, which allow for a return to double-handed and keelboat sailing. We lead this instalment of Briefings with a look at what the new guidelines mean for yachting and boating clubs and what each club will need to consider when deciding how they operate safely.

We also take a look at what's been happening around the country in Regional Roundup, bring you some encouraging results from this year's Voice of the Participant Survey and let you know about a couple of Yachting New Zealand events - February's Oceanbridge NZL Sailing Regatta which will also double as the New Zealand Youth Championships, as well a ramp up in activity for youth sailors. There's also a poignant story about the passing of Pete Waters, a talented and popular sailor who passed away recently due to skin cancer.

As always, let us know if you've got any news or suggestions by emailing .

The four Yachting New Zealand regional development managers take a look at what has been happening in their areas and also highlight how they can help clubs and coaches connect.

Uncertainty over Covid restrictions, among other organisational issues, has forced the cancellation of next year's CRC Bay of Islands Sailing Week.

Results from this year's Voice of the Participant Survey highlight how highly valued yachting and boating clubs are with their members and in their community.

It will feel like a new era for many different reasons at February's Oceanbridge NZL Sailing Regatta at the Wakatere Boating Club.

Peter Burling and Blair Tuke are finalists for the Rolex World Sailor of the Year, which takes into account the last two years, and need your support.

Pete Waters invariably succeeded at anything he put his mind to - he was a top sailor, rower, rugby player and business owner - and even confounded doctors in his fight with skin cancer.

Tom Saunders, who recently won the Laser world championships in Barcelona, was the latest guest on the Yachting New Zealand podcast.

This month's Yachting New Zealand Christmas Cup headlines a return to what is hoped to be a full summer of youth sailing.

Yachting New Zealand hope a full programme of activities associated with their schools programme, Kkkaha - Powered by Wind, will be on offer in term 1, 2022.

Yachting New Zealand's online member card for the 2021/22 season is available for you now so you can make the most of the great benefits available.

We don't tend to have white Christmases in New Zealand but it can be greener if you and your family consider a few things when buying and wrapping gifts for friends and family this year.

GOfuel offer no-fees fuel cards for Mobil, BP and Z, which apply a discount for every litre purchased, and are available to Yachting NZ member card holders.

Emirates Team New Zealand: America’s Cup Defender Profile

Team New Zealand

The 37th America’s Cup racing is underway, and here’s a team profile on Emirates Team New Zealand, the crew and their yacht club, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron…

Team profile.

Nationality: New Zealand

Representing: Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron

Key Sailors: Peter Burling (Skipper), Nathan Outteridge (Helm), Louis Crosby, Hamish Bond, Ray Davies

Peter Burling

About Emirates Team New Zealand

Based in Auckland, New Zealand’s AC sailing team has had great success in the America’s Cup, dating back to their first win in 1995. Other notable victories include the 2000, 2017, and the most recent 2021 America’s Cup, making them the current cup holders in this 37th edition. They’re successful defence of the cup back in 2017, under the care of skipper Glenn Ashby, heightens the pressure and ups the stakes for this year’s competing teams – the question is, will TNZ hold their defending title?

Emirates team new zealand

Team Formation

The Australian win at the 1983 America’s Cup is seen to have opened the door to little New Zealand, who until that time would have been viewed as completely unmatched to go up against the United States in a technology based and cash dependent sporting event. Nevertheless, with backing from Michael Fay and David Richwhite (merchant bankers), the Kiwis entered into their first America’s Cup in Freemantle, 1987 . Since then, the team have enjoyed some well earned victories, becoming the 2nd team to successfully defend the cup twice, winning in 1995 & 2000.

Visit the official Emirates Team New Zealand website for more info on the history and triumphs of the TNZ .

Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron

Established in 1871, the RNZYS is New Zealand’s leading yacht club. Previously the ‘Auckland Yacht Club’, it’s name was changed to “ Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron ” in 1902 when it was granted royal patronage, and it hosts thousands of racing events per calendar year.

1,000 rounds of ammunition and fireworks were onboard yacht that burned in Marina del Rey: Owner

Sid Garcia Image

MARINA DEL REY, Calif. (KABC) -- The owner of a luxury yacht that erupted in flames and sank in Marina del Rey said 1,000 rounds of "unspent ammunition and fireworks" were onboard the vessel, according to fire officials.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department provided an update on the incident in a social media post Thursday morning.

The fire was reported shortly after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at 211 Basin A, where flames engulfed the multi-level, 100-foot boat, the agency said.

Residents in the area said they heard multiple explosions resonating throughout the harbor as yacht was consumed by flames. Fire officials said two people were able to get off the boat uninjured.

Fire crews poured water onto the burning vessel, which later sank into the harbor.

An environmental hazard team was expected to arrive in Marina del Rey Thursday to assist with the cleanup of the burned vessel.

A United States Coast Guard Incident Management Team from Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach is monitoring the cleanup efforts, according to the Coast Guard, which said that the yacht "caught fire and discharged red-dye diesel."

"The fire did not appear to damage any other vessels in the harbor," the USCG said in a statement Thursday. "The Coast Guard is working with Patriot Environmental Services and Clean Harbors organizations to contain and recover the discharge from the yacht."

The yacht's fuel capacity was reported to be 6,000 gallons, according to the Coast Guard. Crews from California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Office of Spill Prevention and Response and the L.A. County Sheriff's Department are also assisting in the efforts.

The Oiled Wildlife Care Network was also notified and was on standby for wildlife response. "No observations of oiled wildlife have been reported at this time," the Coast Guard said Thursday morning. "For your safety and the safety of the animals, do not attempt to capture oiled animals." Witnesses were urged to report oiled wildlife to (877) 823-6926.

City News Service contributed to this report.

YNZ launch world-leading Clean Club programme

Live Ocean

Click here for Back Issues of YBQ Magazine

Yachting New Zealand today launched a Clean Club programme, a world-leading initiative for yachting and boating clubs to help protect and enhance the coastlines, oceans and waterways in this country. The programme is a way for clubs to become more environmentally focused, and those efforts are recognised in a three-star rating system based on the number of best-practice criteria achieved. Yachting New Zealand have partnered with the New Zealand SailGP Team, who will share their knowledge with Yachting New Zealand's 108 member clubs as part of this collaboration. It has also been endorsed by Sailors for the Sea, recognised as the world’s leading ocean conservation organisation for sailors, and is believed to be the first initiative of its kind in the world. The Clean Club programme has been built on the Clean Regatta concept, which was originally developed by Sailors for the Sea. This next iteration, which extends the sustainability criteria from single regattas to overall club operations, is something Sailors for the Sea are looking to use as a model for other countries. “We’re really excited about the Clean Club programme,” Yachting New Zealand chief executive David Abercrombie said. “Sailors often talk about the ocean being their office or playground, which is why it’s so important for every yachtie and boatie to do a better job of looking after what we have. “Knowing where to start is often the hardest part, which is why we’ve researched and developed these easy-to-follow guidelines on how to become a Clean Club. It really simplifies everything and helps take clubs through the journey, and we want to acknowledge and celebrate their achievements along the way by calling them a clean club.” The New Zealand SailGP Team, led by Peter Burling and Blair Tuke, have partnered with Yachting New Zealand to help spread the word and encourage clubs to begin their sustainability journey.

As well as racing super-charged F50 catamarans on the water, the New Zealand SailGP Team are also competing off the water in the Impact League, which is a second leaderboard scoring teams across 10 different sustainability criteria. The New Zealand SailGP Team have been leading the Impact League since it was launched earlier this year and have been using their voices and platform of their sport for positive action. “It’s great to see Yachting New Zealand leading the charge for national sailing bodies worldwide and providing a practical framework for clubs to get involved with,” New Zealand SailGP Team co-CEO and driver Peter Burling said. “We’re really looking forward to engaging with the clubs who get their Clean Club certification and hope we can learn from them too.” New Zealand SailGP Team co-CEO and wing trimmer Blair Tuke added: “We race in partnership with our #RacefortheFuture partner, Live Ocean, a marine conservation foundation that Pete and I started in 2019. The nexus between ocean and climate is clear. To have a healthy future, we must have a healthy ocean and we all need to play our part.” Abercrombie encouraged yachting and boating club committees to start thinking about how their club can be more sustainable, especially now with the Clean Club programme in operation. Clubs are encouraged to focus on achieving criteria in five key areas: administration and leadership; waste management; resource conservation; community outreach and education, and more information can be found here .

Yachting New Zealand would like to thank Delayne Salthouse for her tireless work in helping us research and develop the Clean Club programme. It was fantastic to be able to utilise someone like Delayne who holds so much knowledge and passion for the environment.

We also consulted a number of clubs in the development process and appreciate their time and feedback.

We really look forward to more clubs being involved and helping them and celebrating with them on their journey towards a more sustainable future.
