A LITTLE BIT

About Us…

Jeff & Sylvia have organized the Van Isle 360 race for a decade and a half. The 2025 race will be the 14th edition.

After the 13th edition, we announced that the race was for sale. While we have had significant interest and several serious discussions, we find ourselves continuing at the helm.

Since we named the 13th edition “The Last Round”, we have chosen the theme for the 14th edition to be “The Phoenix Edition”. The rationale is twofold, first, it doesn’t appear we should use “The Final Round” quite yet, and second, the trusty Race Committee Sprinter Van has risen from the electrical fire ashes just before the 2023 race. We expect her to be road ready to lead the Roadies around the island in 2025.

And yes, the picture of us remains unchanged. Photo was taken at Robson Bight, just east of Telegraph Cove, during Leg 4 of the race. Great photo of Nova!

About Kelly Yacht Sales

We’re the folks who help put Vancouver Island boat sellers and boat buyers together.

yacht van island

Our Mission Whether you’re a seasoned boater or new to the world of yachting, Kelly Yacht Sales aims to be a trusted partner on your boat buying and selling journey.

More About Us

Our Approach We get to know the boats and the folks we’re representing and then get to work pairing those yachts with buyers that fit.

Need to Know

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is a yacht? Just like everyone’s home is their castle, we believe everyone’s boat is their yacht, so we define a yacht as any pleasure craft not used commercially. From a 14’ aluminum skiff to an ocean-crossing trawler, if it’s a pleasure craft, it’s a yacht.

Do you sell brand new boats? We don’t. We specialize in locating and selling new-to-you yachts, but we’re not a dealer for any specific brand.

Do you provide support for assessing boat condition? Absolutely. We work with reliable surveyors and mechanics who will help you make informed decisions when both buying and selling your boat.

Do you take my boat out with potential purchasers? No. We only leave the dock when there is a signed Yacht Purchase and Sales agreement and we have received a 10% deposit.

Have another question? Just contact us through this site and we will be happy to assist you.

Testimonials

Christopher friesen, beth and dave o'connor - bellingham, w.a. | beneteau 36.7 owners.

We recently purchased our Beneteau 36.7 with the assistance of Brad Marchant.  Due to the COVID-19 situation, we were unable to view the boat prior to purchasing it.

Ralf and Helga Schmidtke | Fleming 65 Owners

Having decided after 30 years of sailing to change to power, the wide choice of brands made the selection task a daunting one. We wanted the most reliable, comfortable, safest, practical and best thought out boat that we could find. Attention to detail and quality was paramount, as was after purchase servicing. She also had to be an attractive boat that we could be proud of. After several months of extensive research, one name easily made it to the top.

Joel Nauss | 75’ President Yacht Owners

Craig and stacey | beneteau oceanis 31.1 owners.

Stacey and I both want to extend our gratitude for your help in acquiring "Margie." She is exactly what we were looking for, and the entire process was as seamless as you had described it would be. She did well on our trip from Anacortes to Kirkland.

Vibrant culture, turquoise waters, and spectacular scenery make for the perfect private yacht charter - Caribbean sands are calling your name.

Caribbean Islands Yacht Charter

Turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, and tropical rainforests await anyone smart enough to choose a luxury yacht charter, Caribbean style. With over 7000 islands to choose from, each with its own distinctive character, the opportunities for exploration are endless. There is the vibrant island culture, spectacular scenery, and the thought of a deserted beach where you can be your own castaway.

With so many incredible luxury yacht charter options from the Moran team , you’ll need to plan more than one trip to explore all it has to offer. Abundant marine life in rainbow colors means the delights of snorkeling and scuba diving are too good to miss. The bird watching is superb too, with many indigenous and migratory species. Sailing from island to island is a mesmerizing way to appreciate the natural beauty on a private yacht charter . Caribbean scenery is particularly lush in the Windward Islands, and from the fishing villages of St Lucia to the underwater paradise of the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Caribbean has so many stunning places to explore. Meet the Trade Winds at the Leeward Islands and find pristine beaches, sunshine, and a warm welcome from the Virgin Islands, Antigua, St Kitts, Nevis, and more. Exploring Barbados and its historic towns, plantation houses, and quieter coves is just one more possibility of places to go in this finest of yacht charter destinations .

The Caribbean is a destination to enjoy and savor slowly, absorbing the hospitality, the taste of the cuisine, and the energetic and distinctive music. It is a place to watch beautiful sunsets and make lasting memories with friends and family.

Back to Destinations

Leeward islands, windward islands, united states virgin islands, british virgin islands, turks & caicos, dominican republic, puerto rico.

Leeward islands yacht charter

St. Maarten offers two distinct cultures and experiences. The North end is less developed and more secluded while the Dutch side offers plenty of water activities and shopping. The island of Anguilla is a hidden gem with luxurious spas and a Greg Norman-designed golf course, and is also the wreck dive capital of the Caribbean. St. Barths has become a mecca for new superyachts and it’s easy to see why, with abundant restaurants, spas, and boutiques to go along with marine parks and pristine beaches. St. Kitts and Nevis are surrounded by coral reefs and are home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park. Finally, Antigua and Barbuda offers visitors a chance to experience history, tourism, and the great Caribbean laid-back vibe without the hustle and bustle of other tourist-filled islands.

Windward Islands yacht charter

As the Northern most Windward Island, Dominica is home to over 365 rivers and the world’s second largest hot spring, Boiling Lake, a must-explore spot by luxury yacht charter. Caribbean cruising here will take you down to Martinique, where you will find black sand beaches and diverse rainforests. Due to its sovereignty switching between the British and the French 14 times, St. Lucia’s history has created a culture rarely found elsewhere in the Caribbean. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines are a perfect combination of modern amenities and calm Caribbean life. The Island of Spice, Grenada, has a great contrast of relaxing beaches, lush rainforests, and numerous villages dotted on its coastline.

US Virgin Islands yacht charter

The U.S. Virgin islands offer a diverse collection of keen environmental preservation, timeworn plantations, and unspoiled ocean. The quiet island, St. Johns, is blanketed by a park which extends into the sea, creating a pristine island paradise. A water enthusiast’s tropical paradise, St. Thomas, provides countless places to dive, sail, fish, and relax on a private yacht charter in the Caribbean. St. Croix is the largest island in the group and offers crystal-clear water and scenic coastline.

British Virgin Islands Yacht Charter

Starting on Salt Island is a great way to explore the wreckage of the RMS Rhone nearby. Virgin Gorda is a wonderful spot to explore the Baths, home of enormous rock formations and then head over to Spanish Town. In Agenda, you can explore beautiful beaches or snorkel over the coral reefs found at Loblolly Bay. Trellis Bay and Marina Cay just north of Beef island are two great areas for hanging out, shopping, and happy hour on your luxury yacht charter. Caribbean snorkelling spots Monkey Point on Guana Island or Sandy Spit come highly recommended for viewing stunning sea life. After all the snorkelling and hiking, a visit to Foxy’s on Jost Van Dyke is a must. The last attractions can be found on Tortola and Norman Island: Pusser’s Landing restaurant and Treasure Point, which is thought to be the inspiration for “Treasure Island.”

Turks & Caicos Yacht Charter

Providenciales or more commonly known as “Provo” is the most developed Island with an extensive infrastructure of hotels, restaurants, and facilities. Even though Provo is developed, it has still managed to maintain a rustic island feel. Visiting the conch farm on Provo is fascinating, as it is the only one in the world. Middle Caicos and North Caicos embody the unsurpassed preservation of the environment, with lush tropical woodlands, the largest cave network in the Caribbean, cottage pond and flamingo pond in North Caicos and a range of wildlife. Grand Turk and Salt Cay have a rich history complete with Bermudian styled homes and friendly island charm. The Islands have the Atlantic Ocean to the North and the serene Caicos bank to the south. The Caicos bank provides excellent anchorage in shallow crystal waters – perfect for a private yacht charter, Caribbean style.

Dominican Republic yacht charter

There is no place in the world like the Dominican Republic. More than just beach resorts, the Dominican Republic has one of the most beautifully diverse coastlines in the world, with ragged rocky cliffs and palm-tree-studded beaches extending for hundreds of miles. On the eastern side of the island the resort town of Punta Cana has incredible golf courses, chic restaurants, gorgeous beaches and 5-star resorts. The northern coast of the Dominican Republic’s heart is Puerto Plata, a perfect place to be pampered in between the beach and dinner. A quick trip to Santo Domingo will let you experience the oldest city in the new world with its fascinating history and culture.

Puerto Rico yacht charter

Puerto Rico is unlike any other place in the Caribbean – come for a visit and live your own 5-star vacation. San Juan is where the old and new come together and give the island it’s heart and soul. Old San Juan is a breathtaking ancient city that has managed to retain its charisma. The ocean is the main attraction in the west and sports some of the best surfing you’ll find on a luxury yacht charter. Caribbean waters teem with life in the east, the ideal place to explore underneath the surface. With all it has to offer, Puerto Rico is sure to exceed all expectations.

Luxury Private Yachts in BVI

The British Virgin Islands are considered one of the best-crewed catamaran destinations in the world. The catamarans operating in the area have evolved significantly and are now a popular sailing option in the virgin islands. With their larger size, superior stability, and luxurious amenities, guests can enjoy more space and comfort while on the BVI yacht charters.

This is because catamarans operating in the British Virgin Islands, far from being the second-best sailing choice of the distant past, are getting bigger and more luxurious , affording a pleasant, relaxed journey on the gentle trade winds of the archipelago. A fully crewed catamaran is a comfortable alternative to motor yachts, especially above the 60ft+ range .

Furthermore, while the British Virgin Islands have traditionally been known as sailing destinations, there has been a growing demand for motor yachts among luxury yacht charter guests. As the marinas compete to accommodate more and larger vessels, their numbers increase There are now over 200 large (over 100 feet meters) motor BVI yacht charters operating in the area in the high season. The motor yachts offer more privacy and prestige , more water toys , and comfort as they are able to accommodate a larger number of guests (and crew). Note that jetskis are not allowed in the BVI yacht charters (yes for USVI – except for national parks).

Virgin Islands Entry Regulations

From covid to work permits and business licences.

With the health crisis is almost at an end , Covid regulations in the British Virgin Islands have changed. They have not disappeared, but transferred into a bureaucracy war of work permit and trade licences.

What that means is that your charter starting in USVI might not go to the BVI because the paperwork did not make it through. How can you be sure that your selected yacht has the necessary paperwork to go? That depends on your dates. Consult your preferences with us and we’ll be very direct about where your selected yacht is in terms of feasibility of a BVI charter. Note that the rules are subject to, often very unexpected, changes.

BVI charter guests on vacation are no longer required to register for entry clearance or show proof of travel insurance, regardless of their vaccination status. Also, there is no longer the need to present a COVID-19 test result upon arrival in the British Virgin Islands.

Yacht Charter in British Virigin Islands

Selecting a private yacht charter broker.

When it’s time to charter a yacht for your trip to the British Virgin Islands, it’s important to choose a broker with a local presence on the ground, and one that has the most experience in the market.

DMA Yachting has a permanent presence in the British Virgin Islands, which gives us the knowledge and experience of boats, the local fleet, crews, and the little local secrets that give an edge towards achieving the perfect luxury yacht charter vacation.

YACHT CHARTER SEASON IN BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS

If you’re looking to charter a yacht in the BVI, you’ll want to start your search at least six months out. The main charter season in the BVI spans from December to March, with a peak around Christmas/New Year. Notice the interesting months of April and November, which offer reasonable deals in the British Virgin Islands.

By the beginning of summer, the best choices for peak dates are booked. It’s not unseen to have clients inquire 2 years ahead – the value for money First minute vs. Last minute is unbelievable. There still are “deals” on last minute charters that rarely have to do with last minute cancellations.

BVI YACHT CHARTERS DESTINATIONs

White Bay Jost Van Dyke BVI

Jost Van Dyke

A beautiful island in the British Virgin Islands, Jost Van Dyke is a must-see for yacht charters looking to experience some of the best scuba diving in the world. The waters around the Jost Van Dyke land are flourishing with marine life- creating an incredible opportunity for snorkeling and other water sports.

Even though it is one of the smallest leeward islands in the  BVI , the yacht charters will be treated to  spectacular scenery  and authentic experiences in Jost Van Dyke. Don’t miss a visit to the Great Harbour Bars of Foxy’s and Ivan’s for a drink, the peaceful energy of Diamond Cay, and the crashing waves of Bubbly Pool.

Connect yourself with the local culture at White Bay – a magical place of positive energy in BVI yacht charters. Swim from your boat to the famous Soggy Dollar bar for a painkiller. Hang out in the hammock in Hendo’s Hideout, get a roti or seafood, and relax on the beach. Weekends are more party-like, with day trips from USVI filling the beach bars.

Virgin Gorda

Virgin Gorda is the third largest island in the British Virgin Islands, with just over 4,000 people. It’s known for its beautiful white sands, the rock pools known as The Baths, and world-class luxury resorts and clubs for BVI yacht charters. There are also some great hiking trails on Virgin Gorda with sweeping views of the island’s coastline-making it an ideal destination for visitors with  bareboat catamarans .

After soaking up the sunshine and saltwater activities in Virgin Gorda, consider visiting the Copper Mine National Park. These 19th-century abandoned ruins are found between Copper Mine Bay and Crooks Bay on the island’s southeastern point. The structures were built by Cornish miners and housed around 130 families before the mine was closed in 1862.

Spring Bay at Virgin Gorda Island

This tiny island is arguably one of the most pristine places in the world, and it makes sense why it has become synonymous with white sand beaches. Loblolly Beach, Bay Beach, and Cow Wreck Beach are not to be missed in BVI yacht charters.

Anegada sea is also home to the largest barrier coral reef in the Caribbean. You’ll find turtles, nurse sharks, stingrays, and even manta rays!

The island has a modest road network, little traffic, and is best discovered on a boat. However, those that choose to explore on land will find easy hiking trails that offer a unique view of the topography.

Necker Island

If you’re looking for a getaway as close to paradise as possible, look no further than Necker Island for your British Virgin Islands Yacht Charter.

Necker Island is one of the world’s most exclusive and expensive destinations. Owned by Sir Richard Branson since 1978, it has been used as a private island for selective guests and celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey and David Bowie. And if you’re wondering whether you can enjoy some of this luxury, the answer is yes.

Guests can enjoy snorkeling and scuba diving in the clear waters surrounding the island or relax on one of the turquoise-colored beaches during the Yacht Charter BVI.

Norman Island

Norman island is another privately owned island, this 600 acres paradise on earth provides sandy coves and an extensive network of caves waiting to be explored. This island is a premium snorkeling destination for all water enthusiasts and BVI yacht charters.

The history of Norman Island is tied to pirates and a hiding spot for pirates’ booty. Some say that Treasure Island, the famed novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, is based on the history of Norman Island.

The island has several bays and dive sites worth getting acquainted with, including Benures Bay and The Bight. You can also partake in an evening of drinking at the legendary floating bar of Willy T.

Tortola is the largest island in the British Virgin Islands. It’s home to some of the best diving and snorkelling in the Caribbean- especially in Cane garden bay . Tortola Island also has many historical sites and points of interest. Don’t miss a visit to Smuggler’s Cove, a perfect shallow reef ideal for scuba beginners and untouched by civilization.

To taste Caribbean living from your BVI charter vacation, venture into Torrola’s Road Town. The freedom of your own private yacht lets you explore the colorful streets and enjoy laid-back evenings tasting rum-infused cocktails from the beach bars. A visit to the Callwood Rum Distillery is a must, as is a stroll around the Craft’s Alive Village for souvenir shopping.

Jost Van Dyke | A Charming Island Gem

Jost Van Dyke is the smallest of the four main islands of the British Virgin Islands at about three square miles. It rests in the northern portion of the archipelago of the Virgin Islands. Jost Van Dyke lies about five miles to the northwest of Tortola and five miles to the north of Saint John. The island of Jost Van Dyke was named after a noted Dutch privateer, Joost van Dyk.

Jost van Dyke

About Jost Van Dyke

Jost Van Dyke is the smallest of the four main islands of the British Virgin Islands. It is about 3 square miles.

Like many of the British Virgin islands, it is volcanic in origin and mountainous. The highest point on the island is Majohnny Hill at 1,053 feet.

The climate in Jost Van Dyke is subtropical and cooled by gentle trade winds. Since the trade winds prevent the island from becoming overly warm, the weather varies very little from month to month. The yearly average temperature is 80.5 F.

Jost Van Dyke | Things to See and Do

  • Snorkel or dive at popular dive sites. Favored spots near Jost Van Dyke include Twin Towers , Sandy Cay , Wayward Wall , Stoney Bay , and The Cathedral .
  • Go hiking. There are several trails on the island with fantastic views. The view from the top of Majohnny Hill is worth the strenuous hike to get there. From the top, you’ll be rewarded with amazing Caribbean Sea views.
  • Mountain bike . In addition to hiking, you can also travel the hills on a bike.
  • Kayak, standup paddleboard, and other water sports. Jost Van Dyke is a fantastic place to get out your yacht’s water toys .
  • Fish . Just north of Jost Van Dyke is the North Sea Drop which is the second deepest ocean depth in the world. This area is said to have the highest number of Blue Marlin strikes per day of anywhere in the world. Of course, you can also fish from the shore.
  • Visit the natural jacuzzi known as the Bubbly Pool , a tidal pool with a narrow opening to the sea. Be sure to bring water shoes because the area is rocky.
  • Try local dishes such as barbecues, West Indian roti, flying fish sandwiches, grilled fresh fish, as well as lobster.
  • For a truly unique experience, get a massage at Ocean Spa BVI .
  • Swim at White Bay . This secluded half-mile sandy beach has reefs that are close to the shore.
  • Snorkel at Trunk Bay : This is a secluded bay on the north side of the island. It is home to a coral reef and a variety of marine life.
  • Scuba Dive . JVD Scuba offers equipment rentals, snorkeling and eco tours, scuba diving trips, and a PADI Scuba school.

Beach Bars on Jost Van Dyke

  • Stop by the Soggy Dollar Bar for a Painkiller drink. This swim-up beach bar is world-famous. They even have their own brand of rum! This is one of the BVI beach bars Jimmy Buffett enjoyed to visit along with Foxy’s.
  • Visit the famous Foxy’s Bar . This iconic bar is known worldwide as a place to have fun and party.
  • Seddy’s One Love Bar and Grill is a great place to meet new friends.

Little Harbour Marina: Amenities include Wi-Fi, 24-hour security, a grocery store, an ice machine, diesel and gasoline, and water. In addition, the marina is close to restaurants, bars, and taxi services. It is well-lit at night.

Rendezvous diving

yacht van island

If your crewed charter yacht does not offer onboard diving then fear not, rendezvous diving can be arranged.

So what is Rendezvous diving?

A local dive company will pick you up direct from your charter yacht at a pre-determined location and take you for a one- or two-tank dive to experience the BVI below the water. This is an excellent option if only a couple of guests wish to dive or can work equally as well if all your group are interested. If your charter yacht offers minimal onboard diving, then rendezvous diving can also work if you wanted to add a few more dives during your charter.

Rendezvous diving is at additional cost, payable locally. The dive company provides all gear.

Why our customers love us!

This review is over due in writing, because it’s been almost a month since we had the most incredible time with this precious company, who took my family and I out on their beautiful boat for the day! Everything was beyond amazing! Mariah the first mate, was so attentive and kind to all of our needs, she totally went over and beyond! And captain Ethan, was so kind and incredibly knowledgeable about where to sail and snorkel that would meet all our desires! He is a captain that truly cares about his passengers and also went over and beyond in helping us with anything we needed! They are both purely amazing! Our time snorkeling and sailing was the absolute highlight of our trip! Thank you so much Ethan and Mariah, hope to see you guys next year!!! God Bless you both!

One of the best ways to experience the USVIs is by sailboat and Blue Dream Charters did not disappoint. We booked a private charter for two days of our vacation where Tommy + Erin showed us some of the most beautiful spots in St. Thomas + St. John. The views were stunning and the snorkeling was so fun. We stopped by a few popular spots and visited hidden gems, learning history + fun facts along the way. Tacos + pizza for lunch were perfect after afternoons spent swimming. What made this trip so special - we were able to bring our two small dogs with us. Tommy + Erin were so accommodating and sweet to them and we were able to make some fun memories. Thanks for everything, Blue Dream crew! 💙

We had such an amazing time celebrating my brothers 30th birthday! Tommy and Luke were the absolute best, we could not have asked for better service. We had a group of 8 and there was plenty to drink and eat for our entire group and our cups never ran empty! We are already planning our trip for next year and we will definitely be booking with Blue Dream again! We seriously can’t thank them enough for such an incredible day!! Highly, highly recommended!!!

Six of us had a wonderful private charter out of Cruz Bay last week. Captain Will was knowledgable and accommodating of our diverse snorkel group, providing close supervision to those who needed it. Jarred (sp?), his first mate, was a wealth of information about the history, landscape, marine life and local culture peppering information into informal conversation throughout. We sailed, visited a couple of beautiful reefs we could not have accessed via Jeep on St. John, and enjoyed a very relaxing day on the water together. We got some great photos and will remember this experience as one of the highlights of our visit. Thanks Tommy and company for the memories made!

Captain Tommy and his crew catered to our every whim as they dodged the rainstorms and found the perfect, quiet, beautiful anchorage where they produced a delicious meal of fresh mahi or chicken tacos with all the fixings. The boat was extremely comfortable and spacious and a wonderful spot to relax and enjoy a special birthday. The margaritas were excellent, and they kept them coming. It was truly a perfect evening. Thank you guys.

I work as a private chef on board a luxury yacht in the British Virgin Islands. Here's what I make for my guests in a day.

  • Hannah Staddon works as a private chef on Mucho Gusto, a luxury yacht in the British Virgin Islands.
  • With her husband, Dominic Baldzuhn, the yacht's captain, they take guests on weeklong trips.
  • From sushi to wagyu steaks, here's everything Staddon makes for her guests.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Hannah Staddon, a 31-year-old private chef who works onboard the Mucho Gusto , a luxury charter in the British Virgin Islands. It has been edited for length and clarity.

I've been in the industry for around 13 years. I started as a yacht stewardess in the Mediterranean. I worked as a stew for about three years before gravitating toward the kitchen.

At one point, a chef I was working with didn't enjoy baking — but I was pretty good at it. That jumpstarted my interest in cooking, and I saved up through another season to put myself through chef's school back in South Africa, where I'm from.

I worked as a crew chef for a 160-foot yacht for a bit, but I realized I didn't even really like crew cooking because they just made food in big batches.

I cooked for 10 to 14 people daily for about four or five months. But I was getting burned out, and I wanted to be creative and make small, beautiful things.

So, my partner and I started looking for a boat together, and we ended up working together on board Mucho Gusto.

It's been seven years, and we haven't looked back.

My day in a nutshell

I get up at about 6 a.m. As soon as I wake up, I start prepping pastries, laying out the tables, and getting our guests coffee.

I usually make a continental spread for breakfast with homemade granola yogurt, fruit plates, and pastries. Then, I'll have a hot option for the day, like eggs benedict or waffles.

I like cooking light and healthy food. So I do spreads, sometimes with homemade focaccia, and then a protein, depending on the guests' preferences.

I also try to source most of my produce from local farmers and fishermen.

Lunches vary between plated salads and buffet-style courses. I whip up homemade ice cream, so there's always a selection available for dessert at lunch.

I start prepping dinner at about 5 p.m. and usually serve it at around 7 p.m.

Depending on how active the guests have been, I may serve a little snack plate before dinner, like some fresh fruits or a charcuterie board.

Related stories

By about 7 p.m., once all the guests have showered and are ready for dinner, I'll have set the table. Dominic, meanwhile, serves sundown cocktails.

Unless guests request a lighter meal, we usually do three courses — starters, mains, and desserts. I've gotten good reviews for my sushi spreads, in particular.

My homemade pasta is also generally a winner.

Sometimes, I make black pepper and truffle pasta with sauteed mushrooms and a big wagyu steak. People go nuts for that, so I must be doing something right.

We have an age limit of 12 on board the yacht. But at that age, many kids still have a limited palate, so food looks like chicken nuggets and chips or pizza all week. They generally only eat maybe two or three different meals.

Generally, mums communicate their preferences to me. So, I ensure that chicken nuggets and chips are stocked on board and heat them 20 minutes before meals.

After dessert, we clean up, stack the dishwasher, and prep for the next day. If I need to make focaccia dough or I'm doing cinnamon buns the next morning, I've got to make all the dough that evening.

After that, I can typically go to bed, which could be any time between 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

Better than other restaurant jobs

Something I've enjoyed about the job is that I get to be a lot more involved with what's happening outside the kitchen,

If you're confined to working in a kitchen all day, you can feel detached from what happens outside it. And in a restaurant kitchen, you're often making the meal you've been told to make, as opposed to getting to be creative.

That's different on a yacht. I get to understand the guests and build relationships with them. And that's my favorite part of the job.

The very best places to charter in Greece

Published 19 September 2024

Quaint white washed villages, windswept islands, clear blue waters, protected harbours and pristine beaches — Greece is a yachting playground for good reason. There are a wealth of places in Greece to discover on a yacht charter, from iconic islands like Santorini to lesser-visited petite islands and exploring the coast of the mainland. On a Greek yacht charter, you can find yourself the sole vessel moored in front of a quiet beach you can only reach by boat, dance the day away at a Mykonos beach club or visit historic archaeological sites. No matter your interests, stepping on board a private yacht in the Greek islands can take you there.

The Cyclades Islands

From the clifftop views of Santorini to the boho-chic atmosphere on Mykonos, the Cyclades stand out among the best places to charter in Greece. But even beyond these iconic locales, there are a plethora of smaller isles that deserve your time and are easy to visit on a Cyclades island yacht charter.

Coast of Mykonos

With soul-stirring sunsets, black-sand volcanic beaches, historical sites and photo-worthy vistas, Santorini is one of the most sought after islands in the Cyclades. Mykonos is a favourite as well, thanks to its vibrant nightlife (and daytime) party scene, high-end restaurants and beautiful anchorages framed by perfect beaches.

Other islands not to miss in the Cyclades include Paros, which has charming villages and the ideal conditions for windsurfing or kitesurfing. Milos is famed for its dramatic landscape, highlighted by caves and cliffs which can be explored by boat. Of course, Greece is also renowned for its dining, and on the laidback island of Sifnos you can sample octopus bruschetta and grilled squid at its seaside tavernas.

The Saronic Islands

Sailing in Greece from Athens to the Saronic islands is such a quick jaunt that  it ’ s  no wonder that many escape the capital city to visit. The Saronic Islands and surrounding coastline are  home to many second homes for Athenians, such as the island of  Septses , where  you ’ ll  find plenty of luxe boutiques, art galleries and fine dining eateries.  The island ’ s grand mansions and horse-drawn carriages add a touch of elegance .

Meanwhile, the nearby island of Hydra is  totally devoid  of cars and exudes an  old world  charm  —  not to mention unparalleled sunset views from its hillside bars overlooking the sea. Hydra has long been known as an artist ’ s haven, attracting everyone from Jeff Koons to Henry Miller, and this bohemian, artsy vibe is still felt.

Hydra, greece

About an hour from Athens,  Poros combines lush pine forests with a vibrant waterfront dotted with  neoclassical architecture,  upscale  cafes  and boutiques. Poros actually consists of two islands,  Sphairia  and  Kalaureia ,  which are  connected by a small bridge. The island is also home to historical sites like the Temple of Poseidon  —  dating back to 520 BC, the temple offers a glimpse into the island's rich history.

A more modern landmark is the clock tower, built in 1927, that watches over  Poros town. Poros offers a  winning  blend of natural beauty, historical significance  and a laidback atmosphere, perfect for a luxurious destination  when embarking on a sailing Greek yacht charter.

The Dodecanese Islands

Further away from mainland Greece  are  the Dodecanese Islands, which are  actually closer  to the coast of  Turkey  than Athens. The archipelago has 15 larger islands and another 150 smaller islands. Larger islands in the chain include Kos,  Patmos  and Rhodes, to name a few.  There ’ s  also the chance to combine a visit here with a cruise along  Turkey ’ s  stunning coastline.

Lindos acropolis

Rhodes, Lindos

With 300 days of sunshine per year, the island of Rhodes welcomes more sunshine than any other Greek island. But it’s more than the sunny weather that makes Rhodes an ideal Greek yacht charter destination. The largest of the Dodecanese Islands, Rhodes boasts a winning blend of ancient history, cosmopolitan charm, and natural beauty.

There are quite a few sites of historical significance to be found on the island, such as the Palace of the Grand Master in Rhodes Old Town, which now houses a museum. In the picturesque village of Lindos on Rhodes, an enormous castle-like structure known as the Acropolis of Lindos is perched atop a steep cliff, showcasing sweeping views of the surrounding sea and the village below.

Lindos village itself is a labyrinth of winding, narrow streets that are bursting with traditional tavernas and chic boutiques, while the long, sandy strip of Lindos’s main beach is ideal for families with its calm and shallow water.

Set in the northeast of the Aegean Sea, Samos is a bewitching island home to ancient architecture, serene  beaches  and a bustling  harbour . The old port town of Pythagoreion is  winning of  the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation, thanks to its fortified walls that protect the port. History buffs will also enjoy exploring the  Tunnel of  Eupalinos , a n ancient aqueduct built in the 6th century BC, considered an engineering marvel of its time and the well-preserved Roman baths, a nod to when Rome ruled this island.

Heraion of Samos

Nature lovers will want to hike up to the  Potami  waterfalls or swim in the  crystal-clear  waters of  Lemonakia  beach. Samos is famous for its muscat wine, so wine aficionados will  want to make  to visit the Samos Wine Museum in  Malagari  to learn about  —  and sample  —  the island ’ s local wines. Charter yacht guests can also experience local festivals, including the Fishermen Festival in June and the Samos Wine Festival taking place later in the summer.

The Ionian Islands

Located off the west coast of mainland Greece, the  Ionian Islands   comprise  seven main islands: Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia,  Lefkada , Ithaca, Paxos, and Kythira. These  serene cruising grounds are a popular spot for sailing Greece on a yacht charter, island-hopping along the way.  The   islands   here  are known for their verdant landscapes, beautiful beaches, and charming village s.

Corfu is a longtime getaway of the British elite, with a gorgeous stretch of coastline that one might mistake for the French Riviera with mansions dotting the shoreline and hillsides. Then on the island of Ithaca, you can step back into the time of Greek mythology on the mythical home of Odysseus and even visit the Cave of the Nymphs, a  mythological site associated with Homer ’ s Odyssey.

Assos' Venetian heritage can still be seen

Kefalonia, Assos

On the largest of the Ionian islands, Assos is a small, idyllic village is set on a narrow isthmus that connects to a rocky peninsula, surrounded by the azure waters of the Ionian Sea. With buildings painted in bright pastel colours, balconies draped in bright bougainvillea flowers, and narrow cobbled streets, it can easily be argued that this is one of the most charming villages in all of the Ionian islands. Adding to this level of beauty is the ruins of the Assos Castle, set on a hillside overlooking the village. A hike up to the 16th century Venetian-built castle will reward you with views of the town and sparkling sea beyond.

The largest of all the Greek islands, Crete is known for its diverse terrain, from rugged mountains to pristine beaches, its charming towns and luxurious accommodations ashore. In Chania old town, on the northwest corner of the island, you can wander through narrow alleys lined with Venetian and Ottoman architecture that’s brimming with boutiques and welcoming tavernas.

This side of Crete is also home to many wow-worthy beaches where you can drop anchor and enjoy an al fresco meal taking in the views. Step ashore in Elafonissi Beach — known for its pink sand and clear turquoise waters, it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. Hikers will enjoy a ramble up to dramatic sights of Samaria Gorge.

Samaria Gorge, Crete

On the eastern end of the island, mountainous vistas seem to tumble into the sea. Cruise into the protected harbour of Elounda, which hosts upscale hotels and exclusive villas on shore, and visit Vai Beach, famous for its palm forest, the largest in Europe, and a beautiful sandy beach.

The Peloponnese Peninsula

The Peloponnese Peninsula,  located  in southern Greece, is a region rich in history, natural  beauty  and cultural heritage. On a Greek yacht charter around the Peloponnese   Peninsula , you can step onshore to visit ancient sites and medieval towns. A few not-to-miss historical sites here include Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, where you can see the ancient stadium and learn about its history in an excellent archaeological museum. The ruins of Epidaurus are  renown  for ancient theater with exceptional acoustics, which is still used for performances today, and the Sanctuary of Asclepius.

Nafpilo nestles between the hillside and the sea

A charming seaport town with neoclassical architecture, the Palamidi Fortress, and the Bourtzi Castle on an islet in the harbour, Nafplio is an ideal base for a luxurious yacht charter. Known for its beautiful harbour lined with elegant buildings, waterfront eateries and charming old town, it’s a winning port of call during a Greek yacht charter. From Nafplio, you can easily reach beautiful nearby islands and coastal areas such as Spetses, Hydra and the Argolic Gulf’s hidden coves and beaches.

The Sporades Islands

Located in the northwest Aegean Sea, the Sporades Islands are a group of lush, green islands known for their pristine beaches,  crystal-clear   waters  and quaint villages. The main islands in the Sporades include Skiathos,  Skopelos ,  Alonissos  and Skyros. The island of  Skopelos  is  somewhat famous   as  being one of the main filming locations for the film  Mamma Mia!   starring Meryl Streep.  Skopelos  is renowned for its lush pine forests, beautiful beaches and scenic landscapes , and its wealth of  natural beauty was  showcased  in the movie .

The Sporades Islands

The nearby island of  Alonissos  is home to the National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern  Sporades, a protected area known for its rich marine life, including the endangered Mediterranean monk seal. Fittingly, the island offers excellent diving opportunities, including  numerous  underwater caves and shipwrecks. Skiathos boasts  more than  60 stunning beaches, including the famous Koukounaries  Beach with its golden sand and turquoise waters.  The island of Skyros  is known for its rich cultural heritage, traditional crafts and the famous Skyrian  ponies.

Don't forget Mainland Greece

While the many island chains of Greece can steal the limelight, one should not overlook the charms of mainland Greece. Most Greek yacht rentals will include a visit to Athens. The capital of Greece is steeped in history and feels a bit like an open air museum with ancient landmarks are on display.

Visit the Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to see iconic structures like the Parthenon, Erechtheion, Temple of Athena Nike and the Propylaea. Stroll through Plaka, the picturesque old neighbourhood of Athens. And indulge in Greek cuisine at one of the many rooftop eateries that overlooks the city, with views of the Acropolis lit up in the background at night.

The Parthenon temple and Acropolis citadel dominate the Athens skyline

Other places on mainland Greece well worth the visit include the coast of Parga, located  on the northwestern corner of the country, which stands out for its hillside monastery, postcard-perfect  harbour  and long stretches of beach.
