HARDANGERFJORD

Situated not far from Bergen in the heart of Fjord Norway, the staggering Hardangerfjord is world's third largest fjord and second largest in Norway. It is well known for fruit trees blossoming in spring, the Vøringsfossen Waterfall and the Folgefonna Glacier. Here visitors on a Norway luxury charter yacht could incorporate a lovely Hardanger National Tourist Route hike or see the Barony Rosendal, a historic estate and manors.

Oslofjord is an inlet in the south-east of Norway, stretching from Torbjornskjaer and Faerder to Langesund in the South to Oslo in the North. THE NORTHERN LIGHTS

Vibrant colours and mystic tales spring to mind when thinking of 'The Northern Lights'. A must-see on a Norway superyacht charter, Northern Norway is a destination to include in your itinerary. Theoretically, you can see the northern lights all over Norway. However, the best places are above the Arctic Circle in Northern Norway.

Compared to its relatively modest land area, Norway's coastline is immense, if you include the mainland, the roughly 50,000 islands, the numerous fjords and all indentations it measures 21,925. This gives yacht charters a lot of opportunity for immense sailing and cruising pleasure in protected waters.

In the land of the midnight sun, you'll share your yacht charter experience with few, other than the local fishermen and several species of wildlife. Norway's most pristine cruising area is Lofoten, where rugged pinnacles protrude from the sea. The most visited fjords are Vestlandet, which in cases a long stretch of the Norwegian coastline. The landscape here will inspire the stereotypical images of Norway. Imagine yourself here, cruising through the incredible peaks, on your own yacht charter.

The best time to cruise the Scandinavian coasts, is from April to August, although, with the correct clothing and a heated charter boat, a western coast cruise of Norway, in off season, can be an equally unforgettable experience.

The types of yacht charter available in Scandinavia, Finland, Sweden and Norway include motor, sailing, bareboat charter, skippered, crewed yachts, catamaran, power boat, sailboat, and even the occasional luxury yacht charter.

A yacht charter in Scandinavia will leave you feeling breathless from the shear raw beauty the landscape provides.

Spring is a wonderful time to visit; you’ll see Norway at its finest, when everything starts to turn green, yet the mountains are still snow-capped. Summer is also an excellent time to visit, when you’ll enjoy sun-soaked, blissfully long days ideal for cruising the fjords and enjoying a myriad of outdoor pursuits. To view the Northern Lights, head to Norway in September, when the dark nights are ideal for seeing this superb natural phenomen, and the weather is not too cold.

Can I see the Northern Lights in Norway?

Yes, it’s possible to view the Northern Lights in Norway, also called the Aurora Borealis. The best time to see the Northern Lights is during Spring (March/April) and Fall (September/October), although it is possible to see aurora activity during November, December, January, and February when Mother Nature puts on a spectacular light show. The peak viewing time is between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m., when the sky is clear and dark.

Charter guide

Home to some of the best scenery to be found the world over, Norway treats her visitors to truly awe-inspiring views as they make their passage through her coastlines and fjords. Flanked by steep, dramatic mountains, the mainland also serves as a source of endless inspiration.

With an island count comfortably in the tens of thousands, and a distinctly vibrant city life, Norway presents a wealth of opportunities when it comes to compiling a uniquely memorable charter itinerary. Indeed, as a firmly established yachting hub with a centuries-old marine tradition, Norway offers visitors the chance to enjoy the most sublime sights of Scandinavia both when underway and at anchor. A favoured destination amongst expedition yachts, Norway also benefits from a number of quiet bays which offer charterers the opportunity to vacation in total peace.

Providing something of a bustling alternative to the rolling rural landscapes surrounding the fjords, the city of Bergen is defined by the cosmopolitan vibe which pervades its historic streets. Located on the west coast of Norway, the city is populated by a number of boutique stores and restaurants as well as a number of quaint buildings preserved as part of a World Heritage Site. Due to being one of the smallest cities in Europe, visitors are able to easily take in Bergen’s various charms in a relatively short period of time.

Getting out of Bergen and back into the iconic fjords is nicely straightforward, and it is here that the sheer tranquility of Norway can be felt. With over fifteen thousand miles of coastline being inhabited by less than five million, visitors are afforded a vast amount of space to enjoy their company and surroundings in a totally uninterrupted fashion. Expertly maintained, the Geiranger and Nærøy fjords are UNESCO-protected and boast an assortment of cascading waterfalls, mountain peaks, and even glaciers.

Build your own unique trip!

Though you can charter a yacht on Oslo Fjord to explore the waterways of the capital in the southeast of the country, most Norway sailing holidays are about the fjords, mountains and islands close to the Arctic Circle around the west coast.

Broadly there are two charter areas - the west coast with the fjords and the Lofoten archipelago. Many fly in to this region in winter for the Northern Lights (aurora borealis) but with the freezing gales and difficult sailing conditions, the best time to visit Northern Norway is in the summer months when the sun never sets.

In summer you should bring your hiking boots as there will be mountains and islands you want to explore. Close to Haugesund you will want to do a mountain hike to Pulpit Rock with its astounding views of the fjord for example, while in the Lofoten islands you may want to explore an abandoned fishing village or glacier.

This is not a beach holiday! Though there have been heat waves recently you can expect temperatures to climb as high as 15 degrees C in summer - hardly teeshirt weather! It is about sightseeing, watching great whales and enjoying one of the last great wildernesses of Northern Europe.

If you are on a Norwegian sailing holiday with a paid skipper or crew at the helm, you will just have to turn up to the yacht charter base, pay your remaining 50% and get comfortable in your cabin.

For those on a bareboat rental, you will need to present your sailing qualifications to the charter company, inspect the vessel and then off you go. Do remember that gales can spring up at almost any time of the year and prepare for some fun sailing conditions as you set off on your sailing adventure.

Getting to Norway

The main national airport in Norway is at the capital, Oslo. If you are headed for the Lofoten Islands then you will take a connecting flight on to them from here.

There are regional international airports - Bergen notably is the biggest city on the west coast, but Stavanger (a major yacht charter base) also has an international airport. Depending on where you are flying from it is worth planning your journey ahead.

Best Areas To Charter

Norway is a renowned sailing nation with a well developed sailing scene in Oslo Fjord. This has a longer sailing season than the west coast and Lofoten Islands but the scenery isn't as dramatic and many people visit the country for the deep fjords, glaciers and mountains - these are on the west coast and of course in the Lofoten archipelago.

Stavanger is the main base for many a yacht charter company and is the jumping off point for you to explore 'Fjordland' with the steep mountains jutting out of the deep waterways. Haugesund and the famous Pulpit Rock are closeby, the jaw dropping scenery of Sognefjord nearby with quaint towns like Balestrand deep within. The Art Nouveau town of Alesund is far to the north, but is definitely worth exploring.

Lofoten Archipelago

For those who really want an adventure, deep inside the Arctic Circle are the Lofoten Islands. With their main town of Svalbard as a charter base, here you can explore these Arctic islands with their amazing wildlife and stunning scenery. In the 12th Century the Gulf Stream started bringing cod to the islands and villages sprang up as locals harvested the fruits of the sea. Many of these are now abandoned and you can get lost in one of Europe's greatest wildernesses that whales and polar bears call home!

Best Towns To Charter A Yacht In Norway

A small town on the west coast with its own international airport, south of Bergen, Stavanger is a charter base for yacht charterers who wish to enjoy a sailing holiday in the Norwegian fjord country.

Famous for being burned down and completely rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style in the early 20th Century, Alesund is a pretty town in the northwest of Norway. Still in fjordland, it is a great place to explore the mountains and glaciers of the area.

The main town in the Lofoten Islands, Svalbard is the main charter base for Norway yacht charters in these Arctic islands.

Types Of Yachts To Hire

There are three broad types of charter - bareboat charter, flotilla charters, and skippered yacht charter. Where it comes to the types of charter boat you can hire a motorboat charter , a monohull sailing yacht charter , catamaran charter , superyacht charter or luxury yacht charter and RIBs or day boats. Each have their benefits.

Coming in all shapes and sizes from 7 metres to 70+ metres, motorboats are as different as their uses. A seven metre RIB will be a great day boat and can be hired for as little as €110 a day for fishing trips or just blasting about the bay. The 15 metre plus size of motor yacht will have cabins and often en suite heads and cost upwards of €400 a day.

Starting at as 'little' as €10,000 a day a superyacht charter will come with skipper and crew as part of the package. On the crewed motor yacht or sailboat you will be treated like kings and queens on your personal mini-cruise-ship that will often come with tenders and toys such as jet skis and even sailing yachts!

Luxury Yacht Charter

Coming with or without skipper and/or crew, a luxury charter yacht will cost upwards of €700 a day and will come fully fitted out with all the modern conveniences and comforts of the very best sailing craft afloat. Expect en suite heads and comfortable staterooms but also a lot of fun under sail!

Starting at €450 a day, catamarans are luxury yachts that offer lots of space, a fair lick of speed on a reach and a shallow draft for mooring close into shore. They have twin engines in the hulls so while large they are incredibly manoeuvrable when in marinas and so forth.

Monohull Sailing Yacht

Ranging in size from 10 metres up to 20 or so, monohull sailboat form the backbone of the Norway yacht charter industry. Very good to windward, you will find yourself chewing up the miles at all points of sail without relying on the engines. Costing as little as €120 a day you will enjoy comfort and fun for a good budget price.

Skippered Yacht charter or Bareboat?

Where it comes to a Norwegian yacht charter you have two choices - bareboat or crewed yacht charter. Both have their own advantages.

Crewed charter

No sailing qualifications or not confident enough to bareboat charter yourself? That's no problem when it comes to yacht charter - you can take on a skipper and crew for the week or two touring Norwegian waters! With a crewed yacht charter you have someone aboard who knows the ropes and the best places to visit on your sailing holiday. They will know the best spots for what you want, be it hideaway restaurants or the best diving and snorkelling reefs on the islands! Costing as little as €100 a day (depending on the size and type of vessel) you will get the very best from your yacht charter holiday with one aboard. Don't forget the tip at the end of the week!

Bareboat yacht charter

A competent sailor? Have the qualifications required? Dreaming all year of casting off and exploring the Norwegianfjords and islands with just you and your friends? A bareboat yacht charter is just the thing for you. This is cheaper than a skippered yacht charter but you also get the privacy of being in your chosen group without a stranger in your midst. You get to choose your own adventure and go at your own pace - not a bad thing for a holiday to recharge your batteries ahead of rejoining the rat race...

Do you need a licence to charter in Norway?

If you want to bareboat charter you will need an approved boating qualification, below is a list of relevant qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence (ICC): Standard European Qualification for bareboat sailing

ASA 104 Bareboat certificate : The American Sailing Association's skipper standard qualification for hiring bareboat yachts.

RYA: The Royal Yachting Association's qualifications (minimum Day Skipper level) is necessary for bareboat hire, it's also worthwhile seeing do you need to have done a VHF radio course as well as some private yacht owners will require this.

There are also many other European national boating qualifications that are accepted here too, it's worthwhile checking these details before hiring.

If you want a skippered boat rental as a charter yacht then you don't need any sailing certification at all, you just turn up and off you go.

Best Times To Hire

With 24/7 sun in Northern Norway, the best time to charter a yacht is between June and August. This narrow sailing season is due to the climate where storms can batter you at almost any time of the year - but less so in the high summer months. Inside the deep fjords there is a lot of shelter from the winds so even while on the coast there can be quite exciting weather, you'll often be sheltered from it inland. The good news is that the peak tourist season is during the winter (to see the Northern Lights) so you won't exactly be fighting for a mooring as you would in Greece for example in July!

The Climate

June - August: This is dominated by North Atlantic weather systems that at this time of year can be quite benign. Expect westerlies of F3-4 and temperatures as 'high' as 15 degrees C.

How much does it cost for a Norway Charter

There's almost a yacht for every budget when it comes to chartering. For EU €120 a day - €840 a week - you can take a sailboat monohull out with five other adults. That is going to be cheaper than a week in a hotel for everyone.

Catamarans cost a lot more - expect to pay anything from €500 to €2,000 a day depending on the season.

Motor boats taken on a bareboat basis can cost as little as €500 a day if they have sleeping acommodation - much less if they are day boats.

RIBs can cost as little as €50 for an afternoon.

In each of the examples above you can take on a skipper starting at €150 a day depending on what the vessel is and their required qualifications to sail it.

Superyachts and luxury yachts are a different league - expect to pay €15,000 a day and up to €100,000 a day if your budget can manage it.

Is Yacht hire in Norway Legal?

Norway yacht charters are a legal and fun way to enjoy the best of this country. Do visit in the summer months when the weather is right though!

What kind of Yachts can I hire in Norway

You can hire everything from a small motor boat to a large superyacht charter. Monohull sailing yachts are common, though catamarans are more comfortable and spacious metre for metre.

What should I consider when hiring a Yacht?

Your budget for the sailing holiday should come first. Travelling - both getting there and what destinations to explore. What do you enjoy on a Norway yacht charter? Work out your itinerary from there. Who are you taking with you and what are your limitations as a sailor?

What are the best time to hire a Yacht in Norway?

Norway has a very short sailing season - just three months from June to August.

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Yacht in Norway?

There are two deposits to consider. Firstly you will normally have to pay a 50% deposit on booking. This secures your trip. On arrival you will have to pay a refundable security deposit for the trip on your credit card though you can get yacht charter insurance - though non-refundable this can be cheaper.

What happens if my Yacht breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to/are on a mooring you will be able to phone a number given by the yacht charter company.

What should I think of before I hire a Yacht in Norway?

Do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter you want to book? Where do you want to go? Bring warm clothing as it's rarely bikini weather!

Do I need a visa to visit Norway?

If you are from a North American, Oceania or European country you shouldn't normally require a visa to sail in Norway. Check with your Norwegian Embassy if unsure.

Frequently asked questions

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

Yacht Charter From Bergen

SAILING WEST COAST NORWAY

Sailing West Coast Norway

Bareboat yacht charter in Bergen is a unique, varied and interesting experience. Due to the large cruising ground and infinite sailing options available a west coast Norway yacht charter will appeal to yacht charter groups for many different reasons. Some like the breath taking scenery, island hopping and quaint villages whist other charterers enjoy the history sites that Norway has to offer.

Stretching from Tananger and Stavanger, south of Bergen all the way up to Trondheim, the Norwegian coast has a unique geographical make up and follows a very distinct pattern. Outer fringes of sheltering islands of various sizes adorn this impressive coastline and a series of large sounds and fjords, formed millions of years ago by glaciers cut into the landscape to form horizontal waterways penetrating miles inland and forming some of the most spectacular natural scenery in the world.

SAILING IN THE FJORDS

Sailing in Norwegian Fjords

This is fjord Norway, a sailor’s paradise in the North Sea through deep and dramatic fjords lying in gorges cut between majestic mountains. The climbing mountains on either side of the fjords are steep and high, and continue as far below the water as above.

The headland of Statt divides the west coast into a southern section, starting in Stavanger, and a northern section, ending in Trondheim, where south and north Norway meet.

Bergen is Norway’s second largest city, and lies conveniently between two of the most famous and interesting fjords, Hardangerfjord, which goes under several names winding its way northwest between low-lying landscapes and steep impressive mountains, and Sognefjord, one of the world’s longest natural fjord.

Stavanger is situated in the southwest corner of a large bay of islands surrounded by fjords. Lysefjord, with its dramatic pulpit rock (usually seen in most of the Norway Fjords’ tourist literature) is as steep and dramatic as the larger longer fjords further north.

Fjord scenery is spectacular, but care and good planning is required for fjord sailing in many regions of Norway. There are small settlements, anchorages, and towns but due to some of the distances attention to detail when planning your passages is required. Winds can be unpredictable in the fjords and can occasionally funnel down through the fjords or from the mountains.

Many people prefer to island hop on either side of the inner lead, and admire the dramatic scenery of the mountains and fjords from a distance whilst ensuring some spirited and varied sailing days and passages.

Harbours are not crowded and you will find only a few other yachts. The islands themselves are diverse and varied – rich in cultural and historical interest. The history of the area tells tales and shows evidence from the era of the Vikings and the small fishing villages and fishing way of life is still abundant today.

Travel connections are excellent to Bergen with many low cost carriers flying in from Europe, the UK and further afield. There are good internal and international flights, along with ferries, trains and long-distance buses.

Places to visit

There are many different interesting sites to visit on a yacht charter in Norway. From Bergen you will find a lot of well protected mooring facilities so that you can get on and off the boat as you wish. There are many small-town docks for you to tie up to and you will always find a space between anchoring and mooring.

After a lovely sail, dock at Bergen and take the Ulriken Cable Car high into the mountains or take a ride on Fløibanen Funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen and once at the top you will have the most magnificent views of Bergen.

Enjoy a walk in the Troll Forest, a film setting for the movie Frozen which is situated at the top. Take a picnic with you and enjoy sitting at the lake at Skomakerdiket on Mount Fløyen and canoe on the lake. There is a café and restaurant at the top if you prefer a full meal after a leisurely day sailing. These will be precious memories made with your family and friends in Norway.

Electric cars overtake petrol models in Norway

charter a yacht in norway

OSLO - Electric cars now outnumber petrol models for the first time in oil-rich Norway, a world first that puts the country on track towards taking fossil fuel vehicles off the road.

Of the 2.8 million private cars registered in Norway, 754,303 are all-electric, compared to 753,905 that run on petrol, the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV), an industry organisation, said in a statement on Sept 17.

Diesel models remain most numerous at just under one million, but their sales are falling rapidly.

“This is historic. A milestone few saw coming 10 years ago,” OFV director Oyvind Solberg Thorsen said in a statement.

“The electrification of the fleet of passenger cars is going quickly, and Norway is thereby rapidly moving towards becoming the first country in the world with a passenger car fleet dominated by electric cars,” Mr Thorsen said.

“As far as I know, no other country in the world is in the same situation” with EVs outnumbering petrol cars, he told AFP.

Norway, paradoxically a major oil and gas producer, has set a target to sell only zero-emission vehicles by 2025, 10 years ahead of the European Union’s goal. Norway is not an EU member.

Boosted by sales of the Tesla Model Y, all-electric vehicles made up a record 94.3 per cent of new car registrations in August in Norway, a sharp contrast to EV struggles seen elsewhere in Europe.

“We’re almost there,” cheered Ms Christina Bu, head of the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association.

“Now, the government just has to make a little extra effort in the 2025 budget Bill and resist the temptation to raise taxes on EVs while continuing to increase those on fuel cars,” she told AFP. Norway’s 2025 budget Bill will be presented to Parliament on Oct 7.

In a bid to electrify road transport to help meet Norway’s climate commitments, authorities have offered generous tax rebates on EVs, making them competitively priced compared to highly-taxed fuel and diesel cars, as well as hybrid vehicles.

Several other EV incentives - including exemptions on inner city tolls, free parking and use of collective transport lanes - have also played a role in Norway’s success, even though those have gradually been rolled back over the years.

Sharp contrast with Europe

Norway has come a long way in 20 years: in September 2004, the country’s car fleet counted 1.6 million petrol cars, around 230,000 diesel cars and just 1,000 EVs, OFV noted.

The transition to EVs has played a big role in Norway’s efforts to meet its climate commitments, which include a 55 per cent reduction in greenhouse gases by 2030 from 1990 levels.

But it is not enough.

In 2023, emissions shrank by 4.7 per cent from the previous year, according to official statistics, but the decline compared to 1990 was just 9.1 per cent.

Electric cars are considered even more climate-friendly in Norway, where almost all electricity is generated by hydro power.

This success story contrasts sharply with the situation in the rest of Europe, where sales of EVs are slumping as hybrid models prove more popular.

Electric car sales began falling at the end of 2023, and account for just 12.5 per cent of new cars sold on the continent since the start of the year, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.

Their share of the market is expected to increase sharply in 2025, to between 20 and 24 per cent of new car registrations, according to think-tank Transport and Environment.

Some doubt the EU’s ability to completely ban fuel and diesel cars by 2035.

In Norway’s neighbour and EU member Sweden, sales of new EVs have decreased in 2024 for the first time, according to industry group Mobility Sweden, likely the result of a government decision to remove a rebate on EV purchases. AFP
