Buying our first boat and having 100% freedom to create an interior look and feel that we love was one of the things I was most looking forward to when we moved aboard in 2017.

SV Spectrum had lovely natural light but the interior was a bit grubby and dated. We knew it wouldn’t take much to freshen her up and make her over into a cosy home — so here’s how we did it! And we’ve done it on a budget — so if you’re looking for inspiration to make a small space feel good for less, read on to see how simple it can be. And if you’ve got a dark boat interior, make sure you check out my extra tips to help your space feel bigger and lighter.

Here’s our 7 simple steps for giving your old boat interior a make-over on a budget of less than $500NZD ($350 USD).

Before: An old cassette tape player and semi-creepy puppet we inherited onboard our yacht were kindly rehomed in our clear out.

Before: An old cassette tape player and semi-creepy puppet we inherited onboard our yacht were kindly rehomed in our clear out.

Step 1: Clear everything out.

If you’re like us, the boat you’ve bought came “as is” with a lot of items left onboard that you won't necessarily want to keep. The first thing you’ll want to do is have a big clear out.

Take everything off the boat and sort three piles:

The rubbish you’ll get rid of (recycle as much as you can). The junk pile may be another person’s treasure — so display this in the Marina as a “free bin” or advertise on local sailing Facebook group sites for someone to snap up. You might have just the thing someone’s been looking for! And put the things to keep to the side while you get to work — these will have a clean home to go back to soon.

Now, while the boat is cleared out you can get to work with the Step 2.

Total cost: FREE

Pro tip: If you find an object/fitting/random looking tool/bit don’t rubbish or junk it until you’ve identified it. There’s plenty of people in a marina that will let you know if it’s important to keep or not but you don’t want to throw away something you might well need.

Step 2: Deep clean.

Before making any decisions about how you’re going to revamp the interior, it’s a great idea to give the boat a good deep clean. This isn’t going to cost a lot but it will require elbow grease and sweat!

Total cost: $5 (+ wine)

Pro tip: Don’t try and do all the cleaning at once (I tried and failed in a sweaty heap of “there’s too much to do”. Depending on how grubby it is, I recommend doing it in stages, or one area at a time. Crank the music, rope in a friend and enjoy a cold wine at the end of the day.

Step 3: Feature the wood (instead of an all wood feature).

If you ask boaties the question ‘how much wood is too much wood?’ there will typically be two groups of answers — those that love the all wood look (the more the better), and those that like to mix it up with a modern twist. I’m unlikely to paint over beautiful native timber, but when we were faced with all the bulkheads in a dated looking varnished plywood, I was super keen to knock it back a bit. So we painted the bulkheads and left the wooded trims, ceiling beams and window surrounds as features.

Painting in a small space was more hard work than I thought it would be. There’s tight corners, tricky angles to contort your body into, and a lot of masking edges and small brush work. So it’s worth taking your time and doing regular stretches throughout.

Edges masked up with tape, and cutting in with the bush the first of two primer coats.

A small roller is handy for even coverage on flat surfaces. Don’t panic if the first primer coat looks a bit patchy — the second coat will even it out!

A great paint result with a lasting finish is all about the preparation, so make sure you take care to:

Clean the surface well — sugar soap wipes are great at getting rid of grease, dirt and salt buildup

Fill any small holes with wood/wall filler

Mask your edges carefully

Use a good primer (we used two coats since it was being applied to a sanded varnish surface)

Wear a mask and/or keep as much airflow/ventilation going as possible

Choose a paint that’s durable and good in wet areas.

Chalkboard paint gave us a fun way to leave messages onboard.

Chalkboard paint gave us a fun way to leave messages onboard.

The Resene low-sheen water-based paint we used is very durable and excellent in wet areas. I chose a natural colour palette for the boat interior to bring a botanical feel inside and compliment the ocean scenes outside. You can have some fun too — one of our walls became a chalkboard, which was handy for making notes and leaving nice messages for family onboard.

Paint rollers $14.45 Roller sleeves x 3 $19.70 Brush $2.28 Sugar soap $6.98 Paint x 2 1l cans $100.00 Primer $33.00 Sandpaper $10.00 Miscellaneous $8.00

Total cost: $194.41

Pro tip Use a plastic bag as a paint tray liner to save you washing it between colours, and wrap tinfoil over the roller to keep it from drying out overnight — ready for repainting the next day.

Step 4: Ditch the carpet.

We ditched the carpet which held stains, dampness, salt and sand (and we didn’t want to vacuum!) and repainted in a hard-wearing semi-gloss white. This turned out to make such a big difference — the floors looked clean (and were much easier to keep clean), helped reflect light for a more spacious look and were much more practical for the sea faring lifestyle. Paint: Semi-gloss enamel paint (white)

Total cost: $45

Pro tip: Painting the floor a light colour reflects more light and creates a more spacious appearance in a small space.

Before: The grey pattern had to go!

After: Warm hues compliments the natural colours and textures inside.

After: Warm hues compliments the natural colours and textures inside.

Step 5: Sew simple upholstery covers.

Whilst we would’ve liked to reupholster the saloon seating, it just wasn’t one of our maintenance priorities, so I bought some calico fabric and sewed some temporary covers. These were not fancy (I didn’t even photograph the underside) but they were washable and kept our seats cleaner and gave a complimentary colour block throughout the cabin (goodbye retro grey upholstery). I chose a chocolate colour which worked well with the wood tones and natural woven textures throughout the boat interior. This yacht has great natural light so it copes well with a darker base for the seating. It you have a darker interior, you may like to go with a lighter colour fabric.

Total cost: $65

Pro tip:  If you don’t have a sewing machine, or aren’t confident making your own covers, find someone who does and do a trade for something they might need (cooked dinners, or help with one of their jobs are usually welcome!).

After: New modern lights with low power use LED bulbs.

After: Blue light aka disco mode.

After: Blue light aka disco mode.

Step 6: Upgrade lighting to modern LED fittings.

The saloon cabin top lights had halogen bulbs which we swapped for LED bulbs to save power. In the cabin and toilet, we replaced the old light fittings with new Opal LED lights. This was a straightforward wiring job we did ourselves.

Total cost: $158

Pro tip: We bought out lights from Burnsco (a local marine store) — they can be pricey so it’s worth the wait until there’s a sale for the extra savings!

Step 7: Bring greenery inside with boat plants.

I don’t care what anyone says about practicality — I love my tiny houseplants onboard! Boat plants make me happier and calmer, which is a good thing (life’s not all smooth sailing!).

When we go sailing, I gather up the few plants I have and put them together in the bathroom sink, or wedged in a bookshelf, and I’ve never had an issue with losing soil when we’re heeled over.

Total cost: $15

Pro tip:  Look for a plant holder that can screw into the wall of the boat. With this secured, and if you keep the soil depth a cm or two below the edge you won’t have a problem on a rough trip.

Overall project cost: $482.41 NZD ($335 USD)

This interior makeover took us a couple of weeks working at it part-time and we were very happy with the result. It’s amazing how easily a small space is transformed just by cleaning, tidying and changing the base colours of walls and seating. We loved this refresh and found that the natural palette had such a calming vibe that we really enjoyed spending time onboard below.

Finding Inspiration for DIY Boat Interior Restoration

Exploring creative ideas and designs for transforming a boat's interior through DIY restoration efforts.

Sometimes, there is already a clear vision as to what kind of colors and decorations one wants for the new interior. However, others should think about it properly before embarking on the work. There are a multitude of resources and pictures available for DIY boat interior restoration . A reading material can include sailing magazines, literature about decorating boats or for example Pinterest or boating sites all this at your fingertips. Seeing real-life boat interiors is possible by attending local boat exhibitions too. This will further result in setting up a reference library when you have settled on one particular design style. Such reference collections would be useful in finding what items would be needed once someone decides to embark on such endeavor .

One must remember that while boat exteriors may look alike, the interior is an area where personal style and personality may express themselves the most . Be courageous with creativity since this area will be home to most of your cherished leisure moments and nothing more than love should be given here.

Boat Interior Decorating Basics

Illustrating the fundamental principles and elements of decorating a boat's interior to achieve both aesthetics and functionality.

As tempting it might be to treat the inside of a boat like a house, practicality remains paramount . Decking out an interior with knick-knacks and adornments may sound appealing but such things easily become clutter during navigation.

In picking materials for the new interior, there is need to walk on egg shells. A marine accessory will require higher prices than any ordinary equivalent. Nonetheless, they are available elsewhere at lower prices. Storage containers from household retailers can substitute expensive galley utensils bought from specialty stores.

Conversely, upholstery, electronics, curtains, and flooring call for marine-grade supplies.A boat’s internal environment is consistently affected by both fresh and salt water. The latter, however, is particularly corrosive to equipment and materials . While resorting to cheaper non-marine-grade options might save you money initially, it will prove to be unsustainable once you have to replace them after a few years. The knowledge of the cost of boat interior restoration therefore becomes very important in this context.

Lastly, there are some things that should just be left behind considering the kind of motion that takes place on waters. They include fragile items and those that can easily fall ; these replaceable with plastic alternatives such as glass frames or drinking vessels.

Boat Interior Restoration

Showcasing the process and remarkable transformations involved in restoring the interior of a boat to its former glory.

Having looked at these factors, we can now consider what are some of the elements that could bring about considerable changes when restoring boat interiors.

Boat Furnishings Renovations

Soft furnishings are the single biggest impact on a yacht interior . These include seat covers, biminis and cushions that might add bright color or muted hues to give character to any space. There is a limitless selection of materials that includes patterned fabrics , leather upholstery among others. One’s choice of colour says much about them as an individual. Most new boats will leave the shipyard in neutral colours but this is an opportunity for the owner to introduce some personalization. One could decide on a lively , colourful palette or keep it sleek with black and grey tones that consider the size of the room so as not to overcrowd its compact nature.

Creative Yacht Storage Solutions

Almost all boating vessels are admittedly short of storage area hence necessitating careful planning in terms of interior design in order to make good use of every square inch available. A clutterless environment gives an impression of more space and usability especially while cruising . Putting drawers within steps provides much needed small item storage while also turning under-bunks into a treasure chest for such things like towels, bedding and clothes. Raising beds represents a clever idea for capitalizing on normally wasted spaces below them . This helps integrate visually appealing storage boxes matching the color scheme as part of the overall design.

Flooring Transformation

Another major area capable of being changed dramatically is flooring with amazing results . For instance, due to its durability, waterproofing and ease of maintenance marine vinyl flooring has become most preferred by many people. Marine vinyl comes in different colors and designs; hence allowing creative expression that is consistent with the main theme chosen for designing it. However, caution must be taken not to overwhelm small spaces with overly intricate patterns or dark shades . In colder climates especially those who would prefer softer floor underfoot can opt for marine grade carpets which are available in plenty colors.

Window Covering Considerations

Window coverings offer another range besides soft furnishings . This can be blinds in different shades or timber tones to add sophistication to the space. Alternatively, blackout curtains in cabins are great for improved sleep during overnight stays on water. A good budget plan enables motorised shades that are highly convenient and could also be custom-made to fit the style of interior decor.

Personal Touches

Regardless of whether one intends to live onboard, travel round the world or go for weekend cruises along the inland waterways; the inside should be synonymous with home. Some familiar items like family pictures, wall art and bedding from home can be used to create an inviting and homely atmosphere . Accessories help bring everything together with a personal touch. All matching or contrasting colours could be used in making of decorative pillows which are more comfortable when spending time on board at night. In addition to this, throw blankets may have a boat’s name written on it for adding a unique touch, plus purposefully selected lighting can alter the mood completely. Functional stark white light does not compare to colored LED lights that serve both aesthetic and practical purposes by marking walkways and accentuating saloon spaces as well as cabins.

Rejuvenating a derelict boat and restoring it to its original state is a bit challenging, but very satisfying. On many online platforms, there are thousands of boats for sale around the world that can be purchased by different people . To have a complete restoration project or simply to organize the interior according to individual preferences, visit well-known sites to buy your boat in an easy and informed way. In order to have a smooth journey towards your maritime dreams there are always experts ready to give you any necessary guidance. You should also consider the cost of boat interior restoration when you plan your project .

12 AFFORDABLE BOAT INTERIOR DESIGN IDEAS

When we first moved aboard, our sailboat interior was a mess and we didn’t have the money to update it . We wanted to go cruising and our priorities were things like new sails, rigging, fiberglass repair, and electronics.

As much as I wanted a beautiful boat interior it was impossible to justify hiring an interior designer or updating the upholstery when we didn’t even have a dependable bilge pump! Fortunately, I found some creative boat interior design ideas and was able to makeover our sailboat for next to nothing.

In addition to sharing our boat interior restoration ideas, I’ve included my favorite boat interior photos from Pinterest and Instagram to further stoke your inspiration!

A quick note that this post contains affiliate links (so if you purchase through a link we’ll earn a small commission). The opinions are our own.

1. START BY DEEP CLEANING

As un-fun as it might be, a deep clean is the cheapest way to radically brighten your interior. It’s especially affordable if you use homemade boat cleaners. Dirty boat upholstery, mildewed cabin liners, and salt-encrusted hatches made our boat feel damp, dark, and generally unpleasant.

Deep cleaning (after years of neglect) drastically improved the boat cabin’s appearance and gave me a better idea of where to focus our boat interior makeover.

  • Professionally launder your upholstery
  • Wipe down the cabin liners with vinegar to prevent mildew and mold
  • Wash hatches to maximize natural light
  • Clean under all the cabin soles and the edges of any rotting boards
  • Wash the walls and treat any wood with the appropriate wax, oil, or varnish
  • Scrub out the bilge to prevent that boaty smell.

2. INSTALL INTERIOR BOAT LIGHTS

One of the great challenges of sailboat interior design is lighting. I’ve always felt that living on our sailboat is like living in a basement apartment because it is totally lacking in natural light !

One of the quickest ways to brighten things up is to install marine LED lights. The key to making LED boat lights look great, is placement.

The 3 best places to places to put LED strip lights on a sailboat

1. Under counter lighting. They look especially nice under cupboards or overhangs because the light strip is hidden.

View this post on Instagram < New battery installed! Lights and radio work. There’s LED strip lights which are great, but in the future we may need to swap those out for the multi colored ones. Our house has party-mode, the boat should too! #catalina22 #sailing #boatlife A post shared by SV Buza Sasha (@sv_buza_sasha) on Jul 11, 2018 at 5:18am PDT

2. LED rope lights make great courtesy lights . Tuck strip lighting on either side of a walkway to help guests navigate in the dark.

Battery operated fairy lights look cute coiled in a jar of seashells and are another easy way to add decorative lighting because no wiring is required. For the same reason, Solar Luci lamps and Solar Luci strings are a great option for lighting the cockpit.

3. COZY-UP TO NEW BEDDING

Ditch those damp cotton sheets and invest in hydrophobic options like 100% polyester. If you have a vberth, quarter berth, or non-standard sized bed, you may want to spend a few extra bucks on custom fitted boat sheets.

I know many cruisers who swear by memory foam mattresses and the Hypervent mattress pad for preventing condensation. If you like duvets and comforters, consider a mulberry silk option because it’s mold and mildew resistant.

4. FRESHEN THE HEAD

Add a splash of color to a dark bathroom with cheerful microfiber towels , Or, if you don’t want to feel like you’re camping, try the more luxurious quick-drying Turkish towels .

Tie them in with a cute wall-mounted soap dispenser and a spill-proof whicking air freshener and you’re on your way

5. GO GALLEY GOURMET

  • Replace a rusted or dull faucet with a sparkling new one with a pull-down sprayer.
  • Splash-out with colorful dish towels
  • Use biodegradable loofas and scrubbies instead of plastic
  • Pick up non-breakable dishware and glassware in fun patterns and designs.
  • Create extra space with chopping board stove and sink covers
  • Add custom knife, wine, and spice racks
  • Add a green bar to keep greens fresh without a fridge

6. BOAT INTERIOR UPHOLSTERY IDEAS

Reupholstering a boat is the single most expensive part of a sailboat interior refit but it makes a huge difference. It costs thousands of dollars if you hire someone to do it. Fortunately there are a few tricks we used to avoid a full upholstery overhaul.

  • Fun throw cushions and blankets can give your interior new life (and cover stained or threadbare upholstery)
  • Packed out seat cushions can be easily fixed by inserting a layer of high-density foam and batting on top of the existing foam.
  • If your upholstery is in really bad shape you may want to sew elasticated cushion coverlets that go over the top side of the cushion (it’s also a good way to protect nice new upholstery from boat projects (see: dirt, grease, and sweat stains).
  • You can reupholster your boat for a fraction of the cost if you do the sewing yourself. It’s possible to score good deals on durable materials and marine-grade fabrics online. Also, if you’re not a sewer but you’re going cruising, you may want to bring your boat interior fabric with you and have the cushions sewn up in a place like Mexico or Fiji. We eventually had all of our saloon cushions sewn up for $100 USD in Ensenada, Mexico.

If you choose to reupholster your boat, look for boat interior upholstery fabric . You don’t have to worry (as much) about finding a waterproof or UV-resistant fabric (because it will be inside). However, always choose a synthetic fabric , heavy-duty nylon thread, and plastic zippers. Cotton will eventually rot and metal zippers will rust. You can get away with not using marine upholstery but natural fibers are a big no-no!

7. CUT A RUG

8. LOVE YOUR WALLS

Securely fasten art, photos, and souvenirs to your walls. Mirrors are great for creating the illusion of space.

Privacy curtains are also a good way to add a splash of color and are straightforward to make

9. WHITEN AND BRIGHTEN YOUR SAILBOAT INTERIOR

Painting panels in light colors can brighten and modernize a boat cabin and set off teak trim. We repainted our red and blue fiberglass bathroom white and it made the space feel much bigger. It also makes it easy to clean because you can see the dirt.

10. STOW SIMPLY WITH CUTE STORAGE SOLUTIONS

Boats are always short on storage space but a few decorative baskets and storage containers can really improve the look of the space while giving you more room to tuck things away.

11. FUN AND FUNCTIONAL WINDOW COVERINGS

12. CHOOSE A FUN FEATURE

Let your imagination run wild. A feature wall, table, or piece of artwork can really change the feel of a sailboat interior. Have fun with colors, patterns, and make your new floating home your own.

Boat Renovations and Restorations 101

Posted on March 8, 2022 and filed under SWD News & Stories

There’s an intangible, but visceral feeling we get when we hear the rumble of the engine and smell the exhaust of a Porsche 911 2.7 Carrera RS or view the way the bow of 1962 Riva Aquarama cuts through the water. It’s almost hard to put into words other than to say it’s magical.  And despite the best efforts of the modern design world, there’s just something about the classics that can’t be replicated or replaced. Some things simply can’t be improved upon.

This mighty 1937 Purdy commuter yacht, Aphrodite , was completely restored at Brooklin Boat Yard with design support from Stephens Waring. Her rehabilitation shows how traditional design and technological innovation each have their place on the water. With redesigned propulsion and steering systems, new tanks and plumbing systems, and completely revamped interior, she offers a thrilling glimpse at what yachting was like in the 1930s—with all the comforts of today. And in the fast-fashion world we live in, where it seems like half of what we buy has been replaced with a newer version before we leave the store, it gives us a good feeling to keep something old going, or better yet, to bring something from the past back to life.

yacht interior renovation

Stephens Waring worked with the owner of this classic 45’ Huckins, called Northern Spy ,  to rebuild the hull structure to accept the most modern of power plants: twin Volvo IPS drives. In the classic Huckins QuadroConic hull form, the IPS performs marvelously, boosting speed, cutting fuel consumption, and increasing maneuverability. Photo credit: Alison Langley

But for every unicorn rebuild project, there are plenty of renovation and restoration disasters along the way. Conversely, there is a mountain of smaller, less illustrious restorations and renovations, implemented successfully, which didn’t require the net worth of a Saudi Sheik to accomplish, but still extended the life and enjoyment of an old and beloved boat.

Big or small, iconic or sentimental, the key to any successful restoration project is figuring out how to identify the right fixer-upper and arming oneself with the knowledge to enter into a rebuild project with a clear understanding of the challenges, costs, and risks along the way.

Renovations vs. Restorations

The terms renovation and restoration are often used interchangeably. And while they may be close cousins, the goal and outcomes of a renovation or restoration project can be quite different in terms of objective, scope, and cost.

What is Restoration?

yacht interior renovation

The bridge of Aphrodite was restored to match the original materials and controls of the vessel. Materials including varnished mahogany were carefully matched and rebuilt based on the original design specifications. Right image photo credit: Benjamin Mendlowitz

The primary objective of a restoration project is to bring a boat back to its original design and construction as closely as possible.  Good restoration experts put significant time into researching the origins and background of the original build including understanding the history of the designer, construction techniques of the time, design philosophy, parts suppliers, and material sources.

yacht interior renovation

In 2014, French & Webb and Kurt Hasselbalch, curator of the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Hart Nautical Collections, began restoration of Marilee originally built in 1926. In early winter 2014 they began with a 3D scan of the existing hull. This, combined with a CAD drawing created from the original Herreshoff plans, enabled the team to accurately examine Marilee’s current shape and compare it with the design from 1926. Photo credit: Alison Langley

Restoration experts often embark on a difficult treasure hunt as they scour the world for rare and comparable historical parts. This process can almost be as time consuming as the construction work itself.

During the restoration process, original materials are matched, and methods of construction are reused.  Modifications from the original design are generally limited to changes necessary to bring a project up to modern codes and standards including electrical and life-safety. Stepping aboard a fully restored vessel should be like taking a step back in time.

What is Renovation?

Renovation is a much broader term.  Generally speaking, it’s the process of renewing a boat or structure by fixing what’s present and adding something new or modern. This includes the integration of new materials, technologies, and even major structural design changes. We often think of a renovation as being built on the “spirit” of the original design while leaving the door open to new opportunities for creativity and innovation.

yacht interior renovation

The owner of Marilee (built in 1926) had the bold vision to create an interior that reflected the yacht’s century-long provenance while creating an open space below. However, he wanted to get away from the dark “cigar room” interiors typical of so many classic yachts. The team worked with Paul Waring of Stephens Waring Yacht Design, to create a traditional and properly constructed interior with an updated layout for relaxed, modern day use. Photo credit: Alison Langley

Renovation can include adding new engines, propeller systems, updated electronics, efficient keels and hulls, and electrical systems.  It can also include a refresh of the interior design elements and decor.

In some cases, renovation can be cheaper than restoration, especially for very old or historic boats where access to original parts and materials are rare or don’t exist at all.

Often renovations are completed in conjunction with restoration.   In architecture we often see this with an old home or building where great lengths are taken to restore the exterior facade back to the original design, while inside, cutting-edge kitchens and bathrooms are installed. The effect is a blend of classic elegance with creature comfort and modern living.

What to Know Before Embarking on a Restoration or Renovation Project

There are no two ways about it, a major restoration or renovation can be costly and time consuming. They can also be extremely rewarding. The most successful projects are born from a sentimental and emotional objective rather than a purely economic consideration (although there are times when the economics pan out as well).  Key to success is starting a restoration or renovation project with the right foundation. This may includes several of the following principles:

  Starting with the Right Boat

Not all boats make good restoration projects.  In fact, most don’t. The ones that do have that special something that may be referred to as being a “classic”.  A good restoration candidate should have a historical or emotional value, or simply, a unique “wow” factor that makes it worthy of a second life.

Building on Good Bones

yacht interior renovation

Zingara was originally designed by Bill Peterson, conceived to participate in the 1990 BOC-British Oxygen Company Challenge, a solo event ‘round-the-world yacht race. By the time we met her, the yacht was a long way from finished. Our renovation made the best use of her potential as a solid sailing yacht: the thoughtful design of the sailing platform, deck arrangement, and cockpit were to be functional in blue water; and down below her interior was to be spacious and comfortable, safe and relatively simple.

When possible, find a boat in which the problems are more cosmetic in nature than major costly systems repairs or replacements. At some point deterioration of major structures such as stringers and bulkheads may make restoration impractical. You should consider consulting with a professional designer like Stephens Waring to get an accurate assessment of major structural components and systems to fully understand the scope and resources necessary for a restoration or renovation.

Set a Realistic Budget and Timeline to Complete the Job

It is said that God created the world in seven days. That’s probably because he didn’t have to clean up anyone’s mess first. Realize that restoration and renovations are often as time and resource consuming as the original build itself. It takes time to undo the bad and rebuild with the good.  Sweat equity can only carry your project so far and there are many hard costs and professional skillsets you’ll need to complete a big job. Working with a professional can help to set a realistic budget and define clear expectations and goals.

Size Does Matter

It’s easy to want to bite off more than you can chew.  However, as a boat gets bigger the complexities of the systems become exponentially larger.  The difference between a 30’ and 40’ boat can be immense.  Experts generally recommend that no one attempt to restore a boat bigger than 35’ without professional support.

Where to Make Your Money Go the Distance

When done correctly, there are a number of benefits to upgrading and renovating rather than buying new. The key is to identify where to get the most bang for the buck.  Finding a project where cosmetic repairs are the main problem is the best place to get a strong ROI.  Renovations such as replacing upholstery, fixtures, refinishing surfaces, and painting can do wonders to make an old vessel feel new and increase the economic value.

Where to Start

Whether looking to renovate a boat you currently own or looking to purchase a used fixer-upper, we strongly suggest starting with a professional evaluation.   Engaging an expert to inspect the hard to reach structures and systems can save a lot of money in the long run.  A renovation expert like Stephens Waring can also help determine a solid triage strategy for what to discard, repair, and replace.  For bigger projects, having a design expert create a detailed design and engineering plan, complete with 3D renderings, can provide a way for owners to better conceptualize the scope, cost, and outcome of the renovation and finished product.

Elevate Your Yacht: Luxury Interior Renovation Secrets

Embarking on a yacht renovation journey can be as thrilling as the first day at sea. With the right vision and craftsmanship, your vessel can transform into a floating testament to luxury and comfort. At The Yacht Docktor, we believe that every yacht has untapped potential waiting to be discovered and unleashed. This article delves into the secrets of luxury interior renovation, offering you a glimpse into the world of custom design, premium materials, and master craftsmanship. We'll guide you through the steps to elevate your yacht from a mere vessel to an exquisite maritime haven.

Image Description

Designing Your Vision: Crafting Elegance on the Seas

Crafting a yacht's interior is akin to shaping its soul, where every curve, contour, and corner tells its unique maritime tale. This transformative journey begins with a vision - your vision - brought to life through meticulous planning and bespoke design. The sea calls for elegance that flows like the tide, and your yacht's renovation is an invitation to redefine nautical sophistication. Here, in the realm of luxury, we begin with a blank canvas, where your aspirations set sail towards reality. Crafting elegance starts with understanding your yacht's unique character and how it can be enhanced to reflect your individual taste and lifestyle. Envisioning Yacht Potential Envisioning your yacht's potential is the cornerstone of luxury renovation. It's a collaborative process that involves delving into the essence of your vessel - its lines, its spirit, its purpose. Whether it's a serene escape for tranquil voyages or a vibrant space for lively gatherings, each yacht has a story that's waiting to unfold. We listen, we understand, and we visualize, ensuring that the design plan not only meets but exceeds your highest expectations. The Influence of Custom Design Custom design is the compass that guides this transformation. It's more than mere aesthetics; it's a strategic, thoughtful approach that intertwines your desires with the art of the possible. Every selection, from the grain of the woodwork to the hue of the upholstery, is made with a purpose. It's about creating an ambience that resonates with the rhythm of the waves, a sanctuary that stands the test of time and trend. In this space where craftsmanship meets passion, every stitch, polish, and placement is an ode to your vision. The result? A yacht that doesn't just sail - it soars on the seas of luxury and bespoke elegance.

Material Mastery: Selecting Quality for Longevity

In the world of luxury yachting, the materials you choose are as important as the design itself. They are the foundation of the yacht's aesthetic and functional longevity. It’s not just about the immediate impact; it’s about how these materials stand up to the rigors of the sea over time. The Selection of Premium Materials Selecting the right materials for your yacht is a delicate balance between beauty, durability, and sustainability. We source only the finest woods, fabrics, and composites, ensuring that every surface is not only stunning to the touch and sight but also capable of withstanding the test of sea travel and time. The Art of Custom Woodwork Our craftsmen are artists, and wood is their preferred medium. With each grain, we carve history and style into your yacht, be it through mahogany's rich warmth or teak's resilient elegance. The custom woodwork is not merely a feature; it's the soul of the yacht, setting the stage for every other design choice to come. Sustainability in Craftsmanship As we select materials, we hold sustainability as a guiding principle. For us, it’s not just about crafting an environment that you can take pride in aesthetically but also ethically. We partner with suppliers who share our commitment to the environment, ensuring that the luxury we craft today doesn't come at tomorrow's environmental cost. Defining Yacht Character The materials and craftsmanship we choose are not just about the end product; they define your yacht’s character. It's about creating an ambiance that's both timeless and timely, a space that reflects where you've been and where you're headed. It’s the fine balance of classic elegance and modern innovation that creates a yacht that is truly yours. In this section, we'd delve deeply into the specifics of each material type, the process of wood selection and treatment, and the intricate details that make your yacht not just a mode of transport, but a story and a home.

High-Tech Enhancements: Blending Tradition with Innovation

The harmonious marriage of high-tech enhancements with traditional yacht craftsmanship heralds a new era in luxury boating. In this section, we explore how cutting-edge technology not only complements but elevates the yachting experience, ensuring that every voyage is as smooth as it is luxurious. Integration of Modern Amenities Today’s yachts are more than just vessels; they are smart, interconnected havens. Automated systems seamlessly control lighting, climate, and entertainment, creating an ambiance that adjusts to your needs with just a touch. Integration of these systems is done with careful consideration to the yacht’s aesthetic, ensuring that technology enhances rather than detracts from the beauty of the craftsmanship. Navigational and Safety Advancements Safety and navigation technology have made significant strides. Modern yachts are equipped with GPS systems, radar, and sonar, not only enhancing navigational ease but also ensuring safety in the unpredictable seas. These systems are integrated into the yacht's design in a way that is both accessible and unobtrusive. Entertainment and Connectivity Onboard entertainment systems now offer cinema-quality audio-visual experiences, while satellite connectivity keeps you in touch with the world, no matter how far you sail. These systems are designed to be as unassuming as they are impressive, blending into the luxurious interiors until called upon. Eco-Friendly Technology In a nod to sustainability, many modern yachts now include eco-friendly technology. Solar panels and energy-efficient systems reduce the environmental impact, ensuring that your time at sea is as kind to the planet as it is indulgent. In conclusion, the integration of high-tech enhancements in yacht design is a testament to how tradition can embrace innovation, resulting in a boating experience that is unmatched in luxury, safety, and comfort. This section would conclude by emphasizing that at The Yacht Docktor, the future of luxury yachting is not just envisioned; it is brought to life with each craft we touch.

Illumination and Illusion: Lighting and Spatial Dynamics

In the art of yacht interior design, lighting and spatial dynamics play a crucial role in creating an atmosphere of luxury and openness. This section, "Illumination and Illusion," delves into how strategic lighting and innovative spatial solutions can transform confined spaces into expansive sanctuaries of comfort and elegance. Strategic Use of Lighting Lighting in yacht design is more than just a utility; it's a key element in setting the mood and altering the perception of space. Advanced lighting technologies, like LED strips and accent lighting, are used to highlight architectural features and artwork, adding depth and dimension to rooms. Dimmable lights and color temperature control allow for an adaptable environment, catering to the time of day and desired ambiance. Creating a Sense of Openness To counteract the spatial limitations inherent in yachts, designers employ a variety of techniques to create an illusion of more space. Mirror installations and reflective surfaces magnify light and views, giving a feeling of expansiveness. Cleverly designed furniture that can be tucked away or serve multiple purposes helps to maximize usable space without clutter. Innovative Spatial Solutions The integration of foldable walls and sliding panels allows for flexible room configurations, adapting spaces for different uses – from intimate gatherings to open social areas. Skylights and large windows not only provide natural light but also offer unobstructed views of the sea, further enhancing the sense of openness.

2. Giorgio Cassetta

Interior design by Giorgio Cassetta onboard the Spritz 102

Italian superyacht designer Giorgio Cassetta is the dark night of yacht design. He flys under the radar yet he’s worked on some of the biggest and most stunning yachts in the world. His designs have personality, with a flare of timelessness and functionality that instantly makes you appreciate the setting. Past clients include Bennetti and Cigarette Racing, but he’s currently working with Alpha Yachts to design custom new build yachts.

Boutique shipyard Alpha Custom Yachts worked with Giorgio Cassetta to create an elegant interior for the Spritz 102 . According to Cassetta, the yacht has the feel of a Miami villa combined with great functionality. When inside the yacht, guests are never disconnected from the environment. The installation of the windows ensures constant visibility of the water and sky, even from the bed. The effect is particularly stunning in the full-beam owner’s cabin where the windows are oversized and less than half a meter above the water.

Their ability to listen, understand, interpret, and transform ideas into results exceeds client expectations.

You may recognize a Patrick Knowles Design onboard REVIVE, a 150’ Richmond that was sold by Will Noftsinger and Chris Daves in March 2021. It’s one of the last (and some may say, the best) Richmond yachts ever built. In 2019, the second owner spent roughly $2 million making REVIVE perfect, and that included a completely new interior decor package by Patrick Knowles Designs.

5. Reymond Langton

Maintaining a high-quality boat means taking care of everything on the outside—where the hull meets the water and where the engine propels you on your next adventure. But what about the comfort inside your boat? Shouldn’t it feel just as new? Here are a few boat interior restoration tips to help you get the job done.

Boat Vinyl: Get Your Upholstery Looking Like New

yacht interior renovation

VinyLIFE Cleaner & Protectant is your best friend here. This product makes it easy to clean off debris and restore vinyl to its original luster. Plus, it will leave behind a layer of protection—including UV protectant—that will help keep your vinyl its original color.

Add New Interior Lining

One of the best ways to improve your boat’s interior doesn’t require a lot of money. You’ll find that Sydney Boating in Australia has a great tip: add new interior lining where your boat needs it. Adding a consistent lining to your floors and interior walls—or even basic upholstery, if you have a simpler boat—can have a dramatic effect on its appearance. Think of it as the low-cost way to hide any unsightly issues with your boat that don’t have an effect on its performance.

Restore Your Wood & Metal

yacht interior renovation

Eliminating water penetration is the key here. Even if your boat interior never gets exposed to massive amounts of water—and let’s hope it doesn’t—it’s possible to get water all over wood simply through normal boating activities like fishing. To keep your wood in its best possible condition, seal it properly and make sure you know how to restore it when the time comes.

Keep The Rest Of Your Interior Clean

Restoration means replacement and repair sometimes. But it can also simply refer to a proper cleaning of your boat’s interior. Here are a few products for you to consider if you’re restoring the interior of your own boat:

  • Boat Cleaner
  • Bilge Cleaner
  • Aluminum Cleaner

And there are more boat cleaners where that came from—just keep browsing BoatLIFE for more. Put all of these boat interior restoration tips together, and there’s no reason you can’t continue to enjoy a quality boat that looks, smells, and feels brand new.

Boat Interior Restoration: How to Create a Dazzling Boat Interior?

1st may 2023 by samantha wilson.

Rightboat logo

If you’re thinking about Buying a Project Boat , then no doubt you will have started daydreaming about the beautiful interior you will be able to create for your boat. To transform a space from something mediocre and unloved into a beautiful, serene place where you can relax and enjoy your time on the sea is a true joy.

So where do you start when it comes to planning a full interior restoration?

Get Inspired

You might have a clear image of the colour scheme and décor you want in your new interior, but for those that need some inspirations take the time to plan what you want to do before you get started. There is an abundance of information and images out there and you could peruse some boat and sailing magazines, get hold of some books about decorating boat interiors or, most accessibly, look through images online on sites such as Pinterest or boating websites and see what jumps out at you. You could also visit local boat shows and see some boat interiors in real life. Once you have a clear picture of which design style speaks to you, keep a file and then make a plan about which items you will need to source.

Remember, the outside of boats tends to look very similar, but the interior is where you will be able to let your personality and style show, so don’t be afraid to be creative – this is where you will be spending a lot of your precious leisure time and you should love it.

Boat Interior Decorating Basics

While it might be tempting to treat your boat interior in the same way as you would your home, it’s vital to remember that practicality needs to remain the number one priority. Filling an interior space with trinkets and accessories might look appealing, but they will be nothing short of annoying the moment you get under way, and they start falling all over the place.

When sourcing your materials for your brand-new interior, there is a fine line that you need to follow. On the one hand, accessories intended specifically for boats can be eye-wateringly expensive and non- nautical products can be an excellent budget alternative. Storage boxes, galley items and accessories bought from high street shops can all be a way to save money. On the other hand, everything from upholstery to electronics, curtains and flooring needs to be suitable for marine use, and you will need to source and buy marine grade products. Even a boat’s interior will be subjected to water spray, and salt water is particularly corrosive and destructive to materials and equipment. While it might be tempting to buy cheaper, non-marine grade products it will be false economy when you need to replace them in a few years.

The last key rule to consider when decorating the interior of your boat is not buy breakable or fragile items for obvious reasons. It’s easy to forget, while bobbing gently in the marina, how much movement occurs on a boat on the open water, and anything that can fall over most likely will at some point. Avoid glass where possible so consider replacing picture frame glass with plastic, and having plastic drinking cups.

Boat Interior Restoration

With all this in mind it’s now time to take a look at what you can change which will have the biggest impact on your new restoration project;

Update your boat furnishings:

Nothing makes more of an impact on your boat’s interior than the soft furnishings. The seat covers, biminis and cushions will add a real bolt of colour, whether you opt for bold shades or more subtle hues. You could consider a leather interior too, or patterned fabrics. Think long and hard before committing to a colour because it will be the biggest statement you make. Many new boats will leave the shipyard with neutral tones to suit all tastes. It’s your boat though, so don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through – add bright splashes of colour for a fun and vibrant vibe, or choose a sleek black and grey colour scheme for a luxurious feel. Keep in mind the size of the space you’re restoring and don’t overcrowd small interiors with busy patterns or dark colours.

Be Creative with your Yacht’s Storage:

Storage space on most boats is at a premium, and you will need to design your interior carefully to make the most of every square inch. Clutter all over the place will make your boat feel smaller and more crowded, so aim for a minimalist style with everything you need neatly stowed away. It is not only a more pleasant environment but is practical for when you’re cruising too. Putting pull drawers in the steps adds a lot of useful small item storage, while the space under any berths is a valuable storage area too for items such as towels, bedding and clothes. You might even want to consider raising the beds to make the most of an otherwise wasted space. Invest in pretty storage boxes which fit with your colour scheme and integrate them into the overall design.

Revamp the Flooring:

Another big change you can make in your new interior is the flooring, and you’ll be amazed at the outcome. Marine vinyl flooring is a popular choice thanks to its durability and waterproofness, and it is also easy to clean. Marine vinyl comes in a dazzling array of colours and styles, so get creative and pull it into your overall design image. Again, avoid anything too busy or highly patterned in a small space or it can be overwhelming. If you prefer something softer underfoot (this is especially popular in colder climates) then marine grade carpets are up to the job and are available in a myriad of colours.

Don’t Forget about Window Coverings:

We’ve looked at soft furnishings, which would include curtains, but you have a whole host of options to choose from when it comes to window coverings. Blinds in various shades or wood tones can be an elegant addition to an interior, or you could opt for blackout curtains in the cabins for a better night’s sleep. If budget allows then motorized shades can be activated at the flick of a button and can be customised to your décor style.

Make it Yours:

Whether you’re planning to live on your boat , sail around the world , or spend weekends cruising inland waterways then you want the interior space to feel like home. Family photos, wall paintings or bedding can be brought from home to give a cosy and familiar feel. Accessories will help bring the whole design together and it’s where you can add your personal touch. Choose some decorative pillows to complement your upholstery (either matching or in contrasting colours) for evenings snuggled on the sofa, add some throw blankets – perhaps engraved with your boat’s name for added pizzazz – and don’t forget about lighting. Stark white lights are functional but not very atmospheric. Coloured LED lights (long-lasting and efficient) can be used to mark stairways or access ways, while softer lighting in the form of wall uplights or lamps in the cabins and saloon create a sophisticated and calming vibe.

7 Interior Design Improvements to Revive an Out-of-Style Boat

7-interior-design-tips-for-your-old-boat

Have you bought a boat that’s been at sea for too long? Have you inherited a yacht, or somehow come to possess an old boat that you thought was past its best? If so, this article could help you with the refurbishment process.

There are old vessels out there that have life in them yet. As long as she still floats, no boat, dinghy, tug, or passenger ferry is truly ready for scrap. Floating is the number one check for buying a used boat. Floating without leaks is even better. As to the innards – well – sometimes a full renovation is the only way. A slight problem that comes with refurbishing a vessel is what is inside it. Is it rust or revival-ready? Would it survive a renovation? If so, here are the best 7 interior design improvements you can make on your new (old) boat to bring it up to modernity.

The 7 Tricks to Revive an Old Boat

Try these interior boat design tricks to update any vessel. From a 90’s tour vessel to a private yacht – these tips can save you time, money, and effort.

1 – Develop a Plan

Before you do anything, set yourself a budget and develop a boat restoration plan to spend it. Plan to buy the materials you need immediately. This is a hard lesson for house flippers. When you begin with a vision for your new space, you look at finishings which are in trend at that moment. If you don’t buy immediately, you may miss those trends and be short of stock when the time comes to finish the boat refurbishment. Plan everything from the outset and make your purchases before you begin.

The following tips contain things to think about spending good money on.

2 – Spend on the Deep Clean

An important step in the refurbishment process is to deep clean the whole interior before you start to decorate. If you can’t do it yourself, then employing a deep cleaning company to do it for you is a safe alternative. Make sure they detail the inside from top to bottom. Once this task is complete and the tech and engine get an update, you can finally start to get down to designing business.

3 – Update the Seating

In some cases, replacement boat seat cushions can make a huge difference to the boat’s interior. Every boat, be it high end or trawler, has a seating area in it. These seating areas gather dust, bacteria, and spills. Ripping the cushioning out and starting again is an efficient way to solve the problem. Complete the look with new cushion covers and you have a whole new room. Check out the African Mud Cloth trend for inspiration.

4 – Budget for Home Comforts

The whole point in all this is to make your new, inherited, or refurbished boat, feel like your own. Prepare to spend a large chunk of your budget buying the digital devices, electronics, and luxury touches that you need to make it feel like your floating home. Think of functionality and of little luxuries. If you’re going to perform a refurbishment, you might as well make it high end.

5 – Match Your Fabrics

You can soften up the hard edges found in vessels by choosing fabric with a distinguished pattern, picking out colors from feature furniture to add to individual pieces around the space, or mixing up soft fabrics which complement one another. Mix your textures but match your palette – just as if you were designing your home.

6 – Use Lighting for Atmosphere

Not all boats have walls. This can make the decorating a little difficult. If you have exposed industrial metal and wooden finishings to work with, add a little brass around and light it with LED strips , your choice in colors, or even specially made spot lighting, if you can afford it. Lighting adds atmosphere on board, and if you surround yourself with soft fabrics, you could feel right at home.

7 – Use Tapestries

Instead of spending a small fortune designing the interior of a boat which may or may not have walls to hang paper on, try tapestries, instead. Decorating the living spaces with soft fabrics takes the edge off all that industrial steel. Not only that, it adds to the insulation, which you really need on open water.

If it Floats, it Bloats!

If your new investment doesn’t have balance issues, engine issues, or leaks, you can get some life out of it yet. Especially if you followed our advice.

The Art of Interior Design in Yachts: Exploring the world of luxury yacht interiors and the creative process behind designing them.

Step aboard and immerse yourself in the opulent world of luxury yacht interiors! From sleek modern designs to timeless elegance, the art of interior design in yachts is a captivating blend of style, functionality, and creativity. Join us on a journey as we explore the top trends, layout tips, material choices, furnishing styles, and clever storage solutions that make these floating palaces truly spectacular. Get ready to be inspired by the beauty and innovation behind crafting the perfect yacht interior!

Top trends in luxury yacht interior design

Luxury yacht interior design is constantly evolving, embracing new trends to create stunning and functional spaces that cater to the desires of discerning clients. One notable trend in yacht interiors is the use of sustainable materials, reflecting a growing awareness of environmental responsibility within the industry. Another popular trend is the incorporation of smart technology, seamlessly integrating features like automated lighting and climate control for enhanced comfort and convenience.

In terms of aesthetics, contemporary minimalism continues to be a favored style among yacht owners, with clean lines and neutral color palettes creating a sense of calm sophistication. On the other end of the spectrum, there’s also a resurgence of classic glamour in yacht design, with luxurious fabrics, ornate details, and rich textures evoking a sense of timeless elegance on board.

From innovative layouts to cutting-edge decor elements, staying ahead of these top trends ensures that luxury yacht interiors remain at the pinnacle of sophistication and style.

Material and design choices for yacht interiors

Choosing the right materials and designs for yacht interiors is crucial in creating a luxurious and stylish space that reflects your personal taste and lifestyle. From opulent marble countertops to sleek stainless steel fixtures, every detail contributes to the overall aesthetic of your yacht’s interior.

When it comes to materials, consider durable yet elegant options like teak wood flooring or leather upholstery for a timeless look. Incorporating high-quality fabrics and finishes will not only enhance the visual appeal but also ensure longevity in a marine environment.

In terms of design choices, think about maximizing natural light with large windows or incorporating innovative lighting solutions for ambiance. Selecting a color palette that complements the ocean views can create a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Whether you prefer modern minimalism or classic elegance, the key is to balance functionality with aesthetics to achieve an inviting and sophisticated yacht interior that suits your unique style preferences.

Popular interior styles for yacht furnishing

When it comes to interior styles for yacht furnishing, there are a few popular options that exude luxury and sophistication. One classic style is the nautical theme, featuring navy blues, whites, and touches of gold or brass accents to create a timeless maritime ambiance.

For those seeking a more modern look, contemporary design with clean lines and neutral colors like grey or beige can provide a sleek and elegant aesthetic onboard. Incorporating state-of-the-art technology seamlessly into the design can elevate the overall experience.

Alternatively, an eclectic style mixing different textures, patterns, and colors can add personality and vibrancy to the space. Think bold artwork pieces paired with plush velvet furnishings for a stylish yet cozy atmosphere that feels like home away from home on the open seas.

No matter which style you choose for your yacht furnishing, creating a harmonious blend of comfort, functionality, and aesthetics is key to achieving a truly luxurious onboard experience.

How to design the perfect layout for your yacht

Designing the perfect layout for your luxury yacht is a crucial step in creating a comfortable and functional space that reflects your personal style. Start by considering the flow of the space – ensure there is enough room to move around freely without feeling cramped.

Think about the purpose of each area on the yacht – from dining and lounging to sleeping quarters and entertainment spaces. Each area should serve its own unique function while seamlessly connecting with the rest of the layout.

Utilize natural light to create an open and airy feel onboard. Large windows, skylights, or even glass floors can bring in plenty of sunlight and offer stunning views of the surrounding waters.

Consider incorporating versatile furniture pieces that can easily transform to suit different needs throughout the day. Opt for sleek designs that maximize space without compromising on style.

Lastly, don’t forget about outdoor areas! Designing a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces will enhance your overall yachting experience as you enjoy breathtaking sunsets or dine al fresco under the stars.

Clever storage solutions for yachts

When it comes to designing the interior of a luxury yacht, clever storage solutions are key. With limited space on board, maximizing every inch is essential for both functionality and aesthetics.

One smart storage solution often seen in yachts is utilizing hidden compartments beneath seating areas or within walls. This not only saves space but also maintains a clean and uncluttered look throughout the yacht.

Another popular option is incorporating multi-functional furniture pieces that serve dual purposes, such as a coffee table with built-in storage or a bed frame with drawers underneath. These innovative designs help minimize clutter while adding practicality to the living spaces.

Vertical storage solutions like tall cabinets or shelving units can also make use of otherwise wasted space, providing ample room for storing belongings without sacrificing floor space.

Overall, integrating these clever storage solutions into the design of a yacht ensures that everything has its place, creating a harmonious and organized environment for passengers to enjoy their time at sea.

Luxury yacht interior design is truly an art form that combines creativity, functionality, and elegance. From incorporating the latest trends to selecting the perfect materials and styles, designing the interior of a yacht requires careful planning and attention to detail.

By following top trends in luxury yacht interior design, creating a layout that maximizes space, choosing high-quality materials and stylish designs, as well as implementing clever storage solutions, you can transform your yacht into a luxurious floating oasis.

Whether you prefer a modern minimalist look or a classic nautical style, there are endless possibilities when it comes to designing your yacht’s interior. So let your imagination run wild and create a space that reflects your personal taste and lifestyle while enjoying the ultimate luxury on the open seas.

Inside a renovated canal boat on Regent's Canal in London

A love of outdoor adventure led a documentary film-maker to explore a new way of living.

green canal boat river and trees

Eager to live in central London near the BBC, where much of his work is generated, film-maker Sam Farmar was looking for a home with outdoor space. However, getting a flat with a balcony is a tall order in central London, where properties are hugely expensive.

A recent job on a remote tropical island, though, led him to consider alternative lifestyles. ‘I was filming the progress of a group of 14 men who were stranded on a remote tropical island. It was a gruelling six weeks in which I had to hunt, forage and starve alongside my fellow castaways as we did our best to survive. I wouldn’t repeat it, but I did learn something about myself; I love living outside.’

man on a canal boat

That discovery led him to chat to a friend who lived on a canal boat in central London, and her agent helped Sam track down Amaris, a sleek canal boat for sale, moored on Regent’s Canal, just north of London Zoo. ‘It was a hunk of steel, painted white – it looked like a floating fridge,’ was Sam’s first impression. ‘But it was nothing that a new coat of paint couldn’t fix. I found a quiet green from a company that specialises in restoring boats, coaches and tractors.’

Sam soon discovered, to his delight, that buying a boat was as easy as buying a car or a lawn mower. ‘No solicitors’ fees, no stamp duty; just a simple transfer arranged by the Canal and River Trust to put the mooring in my name.'

three skylights fill the space with light, while shutters provide an option for privacy at night the bumpster sofa and

When he moved in he soon realised just how superb the position of his mooring was. ‘In other places, such as Little Venice, the canal is very narrow. You live cheek by jowl and end up looking directly into your neighbour’s kitchen or bedroom. In Chelsea, the tides and bitter Thames’ wind threaten to strip away the romance, but Amaris is moored on the widest stretch of the Regent’s Canal, where boats are positioned along a private bank.

‘It’s a 10-minute bike ride to the BBC. Green trees surround the moorings, secure gates keep boats relatively safe and Amaris has plenty of outdoor space; a flat roof and two terraces or open decks as they are called – one at the bow and one at the stern.

kitchen units, bar stools and plants

‘I grow herbs and vegetables in large pots so I feel the benefits of rural living, and of course, when I take off on trips to the country I can land up moored beside a field of cows,’ explains Sam. ‘I feel enormously fortunate to enjoy the best of two worlds – and I believe this is the best boat in London!’

bright cushions

Originally built to host canal-side drinks and dinner parties, it had been just one large space in which the previous owner entertained clients. Sam took on the challenge of turning it into a proper home, installing a bathroom , bedroom and kitchen. With the help of Lance Lawson, a professional joiner and friend, they laid new floors; wide oak boards for the living room space and four tons of hardwood and rubber yacht floor to cover the roof. Then new partitions, central heating, double-glazed windows, shutters and plumbing were installed. Every bit of storage was super-organised, with shelves fixed precisely to fit wine glasses and plate drawers sized as deep as a pile of eight plates, and so on.

fish plates

‘My design format was simple. Paint walls white; make the most of the space – so all the doors are bifold and handles are recessed. Although nothing is particularly ‘boaty’ in style, the quality and finish are as good as in any high-end yacht, or West End apartment for that matter.’ Sam’s best buy was a desk, which folds out lengthwise to seat eight for dinner. ‘Adaptable pieces are important. I use the long, narrow coffee table as a bench when guests come for dinner.’

For the sitting room, he found a comfortable sofa and armchair, cosy intimate lighting with table lamps and built-in storage space for books, suitcases and clothes. Only two regrets faintly bug him. ‘If I could redo the skylights, I would make sure they were open-able and I’d install a better sound system.’

There’s no chance of feeling alone on his boat. Sam points to a group of excited schoolchildren in canoes paddling past the kitchen window. Next, a water bus full of happy waving tourists takes the corner just missing the starboard. Finally, two men on a punt, one strumming the guitar serenading clients and the other handling the long pole, drift past the sitting room windows. Sam, who clearly enjoys this constant pageantry, remarks: ‘I have decided privacy is an over-rated commodity.’

desk and chair

When the boat sets out on family trips it is often filled with Sam’s seven godchildren, nephews and nieces and friends. Within one week’s holiday, he says, they dished up more than 135 meals. Only once did a woman fall off the boat, ‘but we scooped her to safety.' Otherwise, life continues at a peaceful, friendly pace with the occasional swan gliding past and peering through a window, and at times, a duck or two can be found seated on the rear deck sunning themselves.

rooftop canal boat deck and lower stern deck with built in seating

A surprising amount of hanging space is available in the bedroom cupboard , which is tucked next to a good-size wet-room. Sam has managed to incorporate the biggest and best showerhead available in here. The compact kitchen is fully equipped with a dishwasher, ovens and hob. Life on a boat in film-director style is in a sybaritic category all of its own. Who needs a flat?
