chief stewardess, i was first introduced to bespoke crew when i was personally called for a reference check. as we know, the industry is small, and we are all somehow connected by social interaction. checking references, especially verbal references, is of utmost importance when trying to find that “perfect fit” for your yacht. i immediately knew that the friendly, trusted voice on the end was doing their job diligently, trying to find that ‘perfect fit’ for another captain, and i respected that. we have worked closely with bespoke crew for nearly three years and have only positive feedback to contribute to their professional service. most, if not all, the crew has served on a longevity basis, all of whom fit in very well with our crew dynamic. i can highly recommend bespoke crew for your crew placement needs., aldon beukman - captain, bespoke has hands down become my number 1 crew agency. the agents i have worked with have all been extremely responsive and friendly and have made a real effort to build a relationship with you. they truly understand what you are looking for and never try to 'throw anything out there.' with my crazy schedule, they are good about chasing me up when need be and never letting anything fall by the wayside. there is always open, honest transparency, and i appreciate that so much. it is a big relief that there is such a consistent, all-star crew agency out there, brielle crumpler - Becoming a skipper: qualifications, trainings, remuneration ..

avant de voilier

In a global context where the figures of the nautical sector are rather positive, the demand for skippers is growing every year. Becoming a skipper is a real passion coupled with a solid training. Capt’n Boat explains the role of a professional skipper, his trainings, his missions and his remuneration system.

A skipper is the person in charge of the navigation of a boat . He provides paid passenger transport (charter) as well as delivery (boat delivery) of pleasure boats from one port to another, he offers training services (sailing course) and improvement, or he sails a sailboat in sporting competitions (races).

1. What is a skipper?

The skipper is the only master on board . Thus, he is responsible for all the tasks and actions necessary on the boat:

  • Driving the engines and electrical installations
  • Relations between the crew and the client
  • Safety and security of the passengers and the ship
  • Management of the crew
  • Hygiene on board and health of passengers
  • Maintenance and repair of the vessel
  • Radio communications

The skipper also plays an important role in the animation of life on board.

2. What are the missions of a skipper ?

The missions of a skipper are quite varied. A skipper works most often for vacation organizations, boat rental companies and takes summer guests on cruises. During the off season, he or she is more often employed to deliver private boats.

A. Boat deliveries

The mission of delivery consists, for a professional skipper, to convey a ship for a remuneration, between two ports or two sites by sea.

Generally, it is about :

  • Driving boats to a shipyard for maintenance or wintering
  • Routing boats to a race start
  • Conveying boats to the home port following a purchase

B. Boat coaching

The improvement or coaching is an educational mission. The skipper’s objective is to teach the fundamentals of navigation and the use of a boat.

The services of a skipper are generally requested to:

  • Train an owner following a boat purchase
  • Propose improvement courses to owners in order to be more comfortable on their boat

C. Cruise with a skipper

Going on a cruise with a skipper is a good compromise to enjoy both the navigation and the sea air without being embarrassed by maneuvers, anchorages…

We also talk about doing charter missions with clients.

3. Which training to become a skipper?

A. internationally.

The most common certificate to work internationally as a skipper is the Yachtmaster . The Yachtmaster is an English degree from the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), recognized by the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) and throughout the world. It allows skippers to command pleasure boats up to 24 meters long, and up to 200 miles from the coast. It has 3 levels and each one have limitations: Coastal, Offshore and Ocean.

To obtain the Yachtmaster, the candidate must be over 18 and have at least 1000 miles of navigation in 1st or 2nd category (corresponding to the distance from the coast). The theoretical tests cover a wide range of subjects such as:

  • The ship and its components (technical, engine, electrical installations)
  • Navigation in all its states (coastal and offshore, day and night)
  • Maritime law relating to events at sea
  • Meteorology and hydrology
  • Sanitary conditions on board

The practical test takes place during a 12-hour navigation. It includes a night phase, a man overboard exercise as well as port maneuvers.

The Yachtmaster must be completed with a “Commercially Endorsed” endorsement in order to be used on commercial services for profit. To obtain this endorsement, the skipper must obtain the Professional Practices and Responsibilities certificate (PPR), the Basic Safety Training (BST), and the MCA Medical Examination (ENG1).

B. In France

In France, there are 2 main types of skipper certificates:

  • The Merchant Navy certificates (Captain 200, Captain 500, Captain 3000…) for fishing and trade. Merchant Navy diplomas are authorized for boat deliveries and charters.

A Captain 200 Voile certificate is compulsory to work as a professional skipper in France. This certificate allows you to work as a professional skipper in yachting and sailing, either to carry passengers (12 maximum) on ships of less than 200 tons (about 24 m), or to drive a ship for a third party.

In order for the Captain 200 to be effective, you must also hold the BST, ROC/GOC, EM1 and a Medical Checkup .

  • The State Certificates (BPJEPS, BEES ..), are qualified to carry out only training.

C. Yachtmaster or french title?

There is no one title better than another. It all depends on what type of vessel you want to work on.

If you want to work on French flagged vessels, Capt’n Boat recommends that you opt for the French titles. Otherwise, the Yachtmaster titles are a good option if you want to work on foreign flags.

There is now a gateway to work on a French flag with a Yachtmaster : the Master 200 GT.

4. Qualifications and obligations of the skipper

A skipper’s ability to make decisions, sense of responsibility, interpersonal skills, dynamism, initiative, composure and great resistance to physical and nervous fatigue are essential qualities for a skipper. The journeys can be long and the customers demanding, a skipper must therefore be able to adapt his behavior to each situation and people, he must be versatile, available and autonomous.

In any case, being a skipper is a “passion job” that requires a lot of investment. The human element is an essential part of this job, especially for charter services.

5. Remuneration of the skipper

The cost of a professional skipper varies according to the service (boat delivery, charter, coaching), the duration of the service, the sailing area, the size of the boat and the number of passengers :

  • For charters, the remuneration is a daily rate. Example : In Croatia, a skipper is paid at least 240€/day ; In France, 300€/day ; In Saint Marteen, 250€/day ; In Greece, 240€/day ; In the Bahamas, 350€/day ; etc ..

The price varies according to the geographical area, each country has its own minimum wage.

  • For boat deliveries, the remuneration is per nautical mile. Here, the wage is the same internationally : 3,5€ per nautical mile.

Sailing Crew Roles and Names

Sailing Crew Roles and Names

The skipper is responsible for the safety of the yacht and the crew’s welfare. However, sailing a boat successfully requires teamwork from the skipper and the crew. This will ensure that all maneuvers—such as leaving a mooring, hoisting sails, changing tacks, reefing, or entering a marina—can be completed with maximum enjoyment and minimum stress.

Boat Captain/Skipper

It may come as a shock, but the skipper is not necessarily the helm. This crew member must ensure that the boat is ready for sailing. He or she needs to make sure that all members of the crew are accounted for. They also need to make sure that food and fuel are sufficient, and sails are ready for hoisting. The skipper is in charge of keeping communications open onboard and help other crew members if needed. Also, they are usually responsible for talking the whole crew through maneuvers as they are about to happen and making sure that all crew members are ready.

What Makes A Good Skipper?

  • Responsibility : The skipper is responsible for all aspects of the running of the yacht, its safety, and the crew’s wellbeing.
  • Skills : He or she should be comfortable with sailing and navigation skills, inspire confidence in their crew, and be a good communicator.
  • Delegation : A good skipper should keep on top of all his or her duties and give the crew tasks that are appropriate to their experience.
  • Patience : He or she should be patient with inexperienced crew members and be able to run the yacht with a light touch while retaining respect and authority.
  • Briefing : It is the skipper’s role to plan the passage in detail before setting sail.
  • Involvement : A good skipper will also encourage the crew to get involved in passage planning and navigation and will always listen to their opinions.

Sailing Crew Roles

Tactician

The tactician’s role is to get the boat around the racecourse as fast as possible. For that, he needs to take into account the wind, tide, and other competitors, as well as the crew’s ability. They also need to make sure that the boat has the correct course. In short, the tactician is the brains of the sailboat. The tactician must communicate with the helm and skipper to run through maneuvers.

The Helm (Driver)

The Helm is often mistakenly perceived as the skipper. This crew role is to steer the boat where the tactician says and to keep sailing as fast as possible. The helm is also helping with other tasks, but they must focus on the job at hand as much as possible. The helm and the tactician must be in close communication with each other.

Head Sail Trimmers

This crew role is for two members, one who will cut release the sail when going through the tack while the other pulls in the full sail. The crew member releasing can then assist with tailing the sail or trimming it – which is a good example of teamwork. Also, the trimmer should keep adjusting the sail, depending on the point of sail, and should be very focused on that task. Also, the trimmers are in charge of trimming the spinnaker sail and guy when going downwind. Main communication is kept between each other, boat captain and tactician. Pre-start these guys will have a lot to do!

This crew member is in control of all sail hoists and drops depending on the wind. The bowman spends most of their time on the foredeck (the deck at the forward part of the sailboat), preparing for spinnaker hoists, gibes, and drops.

This crew member is a combination of both the bowman and mastman. They are in control of all of the running rigging which comes into the cockpit. This is a vital role and always in the middle of the action. Pitmans must keep communication is between bowman, mast man, and skipper—the eyes and ears for the foredeck crew.

Sailing Crew Hierarchy

This position is reserved for the stronger members of the crew. A mastman’s foremost task is to assist with the speedy hoisting of the sails during maneuvers. The mast man and bowman go hand in hand and help each other on hoists and drops. The main communication is with the bowman, pitman, and skipper.

No sailing team is complete without its ballast crew members that help to balance the boat in order to reach its top possible speeds and maneuverability. These members of the crew are called ‘ballast’ and are key when racing for the mark. Ballast crew members have the best seat in the house.

What Makes a Good Crew Member?

  • Key qualities : All crew members require a positive attitude, sense of humor, and the ability to get along with others in the confined space aboard a cruiser.
  • Willingness to Learn : Good crew members are willing to learn and to take an active role in all aspects of running the yacht.
  • Attentive : Diligent crew listen to the instructions carefully and ask questions if they do not understand anything.
  • Working As a Team : All members of the crew must remember that they are part of a team. A happy gathering in the cockpit at the end of the passage is an indicator that each member of the crew has done their job.

Yacht Crew Jobs – What Is Out There?

  • Yacht Crew Jobs – What Is Out Ther...

Sunshine , travel, beautiful places and happy faces. No wonder a lot of people join the yachting industry as a lifestyle choice.  Worldwide yacht crew job opportunities exist for yacht captains, mates, yacht steward/esses, engineers, sailing instructors and delivery skippers as well as a range of support jobs on the management, sales, admin or technical side.

Good news, there is currently a huge demand for skilled and qualified crew on superyachts.

What jobs are available on yachts?

The best yacht captains have a rare combination of sailing, management, technical and people skills. The responsibility of the skipper is to ensure the safety and satisfaction of the crew and guests as well as to manage and maintain the yacht. Generally bigger yachts mean more responsibility and better pay.

RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore & Master of Yachts 200gt (150nm) is the benchmark qualification for professional yacht skippers. With this you are licensed to skipper up to 200 gross tonnes. Flying Fish Yachtmaster training is widely recognised as an excellent launchpad to this exciting career.

Yachtmaster Courses take place at our training facilities in the UK and Australia.

Mediterranean flotilla skipper is an ideal job for a newly qualified Yachtmaster. The season starts in March or April and the timing is perfect if you have trained in Sydney between September and February.

Charter skipper and mate/hostess is a perfect yacht job for couples . The skipper takes command of the yacht and the mate/hostess acts as crew and looks after guests and onboard catering.

You will be expected to work together as a team providing a high standard of service. There are plenty of yacht crew jobs at the right time of the year in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

Yacht delivery skippers and crew may be hired to return a race yacht to its home port after the race or move a private yacht to the Caribbean from Europe for the winter. The skipper earns good money.

The crew can expect onboard expenses and travel costs to be covered. You will get valuable experience and those all important references under your belt. To work as a delivery skipper you need the qualifications gained on a Yachtmaster/Master of Yachts Ocean Traineeship.

Yacht instructors are in demand at RYA sailing schools around the world. If you enjoy teaching and are looking for variety in your work, instructing is a great way of improving your own skills and confidence.

You will need to qualify as an RYA Cruising Instructor first.

Superyacht crew work on a huge variety of sail and power vessels. The yachts are referred to as superyachts because they are bigger than 24m in length and no expense has been spared in equipping them. Some of them are literally magnificent.

They are usually owned by very high net worth individuals who expect high standards of presentation and customer service.

STCW Basic Safety Training is required by all crew working on a superyacht.

Superyacht interior crew should consider our steward/stewardess training course as well as RYA Competent Crew so you have basic yachting experience. Our two week super yacht stewardess course (Course) provides you with the minimum qualifications to step on board.

Deck crew will need an RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate (for driving tenders), a marine radio operator’s licence and an RYA Day Skipper certificate, in addition to the STCW 95 qualifications.

Superyacht officers, including Captain, Mate and Officer of the Watch, all start with Yachtmaster/Master of Yachts 200gt certification.

Some then work as a deckhand on a superyacht to acquire sea time before studying for command qualifications. Others choose to work as skippers on a smaller vessels before going on to upsize their certificates.

Once you have achieved Master of Yachts 3000gt you can apply for the best command jobs in the industry.

Before you start training, prepare a CV/resume with the qualifications you expect to achieve. Apply for yacht crew jobs online and start networking as soon as you begin your course.

How much will you earn working on a yacht?

Superyacht crew positions are well paid and you have virtually no living expenses to worry about. The bigger the boat the better the starting salary. For a full breakdown of pay, view our yacht salary guide .

Deckhand: USD 30,000-45,000 a year

Chef/cook: USD 36,000-70,000 a year

First mate: USD 48,000-80,000 a year

Captain: USD 60,000-150,000 a year

Mediterranean flotilla work is less well paid but the lifestyle is great. A flotilla skipper earns GBP 120-180 a week.

A couple working together on a busy charter boat in the Caribbean will have joint earnings in the range USD 50,000-80,000 a year, and you can expect to add to this with tips, especially from American guests.

Delivery skippers earn USD 3,000-5,000 a month plus travel costs to and from the delivery.

In the UK, skippers can work for charter companies or RYA sailing schools, earning GBP 85-140 a day in the UK or AUD 200-300 a day in Australia.

A full time RYA yachting instructor can expect GBP 17,000-24,000 a year in the UK or AUD 40,000-55,000 in Australia.

Skipper’s Job and Responsibilities: What You Should Know

sailing yacht skipper jobs

What exactly does the Skipper’s job entail? And what are their specific responsibilities? In this blog post, we’ll delve deeper into the world of sailing and explore the various duties and obligations.

What is a skipper?

sailing yacht skipper jobs

A skipper is great when you want to rent a bareboat but you do not have a licence

When it comes to renting a bareboat without a license, hiring a skipper is always a wise choice. This is especially true for people who lack the knowledge and experience to sail on their own, or for those who want to enjoy a stress-free and relaxing vacation on the water. But even experienced sailors may need to hire a skipper in certain situations, such as when they want to explore new waters or unfamiliar destinations, or when they simply want to sit back and enjoy the scenery without having to worry about navigation and other technicalities.

Hiring a skipper is a great idea to learn how to operate a boat safely

When embarking on a bareboat charter, it is essential to ensure that safety is the top priority. One great way to learn how to operate a boat safely is by hiring a skipper. Not only do skippers have years of experience operating boats in various conditions and environments, but they also have extensive knowledge of safety guidelines and protocols. By having a skipper on board, you can learn firsthand the best practices for navigating through unfamiliar waters, avoiding potential hazards, and handling emergency situations.

You could get a skipper if you don’t want the hassle and stress of handling the boat you are renting

If you are embarking on a bareboat charter but don’t have experience sailing a yacht or simply want to avoid the stress and hassle of doing it yourself, there’s no need to worry. Many charter companies offer the option of hiring a skipper to take care of the sailing for you. A skipper is a professional sailor who has the necessary expertise and qualifications to navigate the waters safely and efficiently. They are also knowledgeable about the area and can offer valuable insights on great destinations, local attractions, and hidden gems. Hiring a skipper can be an excellent choice if you want to sit back, relax, and enjoy the stunning views and warm breeze of the open sea without any worries.

What is the difference between a skipper and a captain?

sailing yacht skipper jobs

Like car licenses, there are different categories. But here’s the catch: it’s not just about the category, it’s about your practical experience and the miles in your logbook that really matter.

Believe it or not, you can charter a yacht in Europe with a Bareboat Skipper (IYT) / Inshore Skipper (ISSA) / Day Skipper (RYA) license. This beginner category allows you to sail 20 miles offshore during daylight hours in good weather. However, if you go beyond the 20-mile limit and encounter any issues with your yacht, your insurance might not cover it. Recently, some countries, like Greece, have started to impose restrictions on chartering yachts for skippers with “day licenses.”

The next category is the Coastal Skipper / Offshore Skipper. With this license, you can sail up to 60 miles offshore at night, still in good weather.

And finally, we have the highest category: Yachtmaster / Master of Yacht. With this prestigious license, you can embark on challenging sailing expeditions, including crossing the Atlantic. This license is truly a badge of honor among yacht owners.

What is the cost of a skipper?

The cost of hiring a skipper for a week can range from €250 to €350 per day. For a longer duration, the cost may decrease slightly. However, during peak season, the cost may be higher due to high demand. It is also important to note that in some countries, it is mandatory to hire a skipper if you do not have the necessary qualifications to sail.

Skipper’s job involves a lot of responsibilities that should not be taken lightly. Not only is he in charge of ensuring the safety of his passengers and crew, but he also plays a crucial role in protecting the marine environment and preserving its natural beauty.

Furthermore, Skipper must have extensive knowledge and experience to navigate the waters confidently and smoothly, as well as to handle any unexpected situations that may arise. He must also be an excellent communicator, able to easily convey important information to his passengers and crew, and be approachable and attentive to their needs.

Top Tips For Becoming a Yacht Delivery Skipper

On Watch scaled

  • 21st September 2015
  • by Pete Green

To set sail over the horizon, to spread your wings and explore, to see the world and to meet many new like minded people… Perhaps being a yacht delivery skipper is the ultimate job for any sailing enthusiast that likes to travel and wants to get paid to see the world!

For anyone looking for a career in sailing there seems to be just a few main options. You can work in the superyacht industry, work as a sailing instructor or flotilla crew or of course work in the yacht delivery industry.

Yacht delivery presents a unique opportunity to work independently on a huge variety of vessels, both power and sail, going to and from locations all over the world.

At Halcyon Yachts we are very lucky to have such a dedicated team of professionals helping us to ensure a quality of service that is second to none. We have many freelance skippers approach us looking for work. In order to help any potential or up and coming yacht delivery skippers we have compiled a list of top tips:-

  • Make sure you are suitably qualified

Yacht Delivery SKipper - RYA Yacht Master Instructor

Most yacht delivery companies insist upon their skippers being qualified to Yacht Master level. At Halcyon Yachts, our skippers are all Ocean Masters as a minimum. Gaining a teaching qualification is also very useful and will help to make you more employable.

  • Carry the right equipment

Sailors Kit Bag

Yacht delivery skippers need to be able to be quite self sufficient. It is recommended that you carry your own handheld VHF and GPS. You will need your own lifejacket and harness line, wet weather gear of course and a sleeping bag. In addition to this it is useful to carry some basic tools including a knife, pliers, screw drivers, multi-meter, sail repair tape and cable ties. I personally also like to carry a small fishing set – nothing quite beats fresh mackerel for lunch!

  • Take out insurance

Professional Yacht Delivery Skipper On Watch

There are several types of insurance to consider. As a yacht delivery skipper you should certainly have your own professional indemnity cover and also we recommend having your personal belongings covered. Health insurance too is wise especially if sailing outside of the EU.

  • Buy a yacht tracking device

Spot - Halcyon Yachts tracking device

There is no better way to impress the owner of the yacht than to have a satellite tracker on-board. At Halcyon Yachts we have a number of trackers that we send out to our skippers before they embark on delivery. Tracking devices such as the Spot Tracker, DeLorme or Yellow Brick all work well and enable the owner to see exactly where in the world their yacht is. These devices are now very affordable and also offer additional safety as you can activate an emergency call in a similar way to an EPIRB.

  • Be professional with CV’s and invoicing

Man typing on laptop computer

As a freelance yacht delivery skipper first impressions really do matter. Take the time to develop a well written and clearly laid out CV showing your experiences and qualifications. Invoicing is also important. It is worth formatting a generic template so that invoicing can be done efficiently and professionally at the end of each job.

  • Gather references and build your reputation

Halcyon Yachts - yacht delivery feedback form

The yacht delivery world is a small one. Your reputation is crucial and many contracts are secured through personal recommendations. If you are submitting your CV to potential new employers then be sure to include useful and relevant references.

  • Have the right attitude

Yacht Delivery Skipper and Crew

A yacht delivery skipper must have the right attitude. Not only must you be an excellent sailor and skipper you must also be customer orientated and focused on delivering a high quality of service. Remember that the yachts that you will be delivering are someone else’s pride and joy; yacht owners invest a great deal, not only financially but also emotionally into their vessels – they can become like a member of their family! Decisions should always be made with the owners best interests in mind. A successful yacht delivery skipper will be careful and conscientious, have a very high regard for safety and will be highly professional in their approach; not only when managing the vessel and crew but also with their interaction with the client.

Anchoring Masterclass: How to Anchor like an Expert

Boats at anchor

Want to anchor with confidence and ease? Tom Fletcher shares some hard learnt charter skipper secrets for expert anchoring…

Tackling anchoring.

Have you ever had the Greek Gods of Anchoring displeased with you? I have. I once spent a week on charter with a wonderfully nice father and daughter, on board Sail Ionian’s brand-new Bavaria C50, and it was an absolute nightmare. What’s more, the yacht had just had a new 30kg Rocna fitted, so I couldn’t even blame the ground tackle! Everywhere I went that week I had to have three or four attempts at dropping before the anchor would catch. By the end, I was in tears with frustration, and still don’t know what I was doing wrong. The next time I took her out on charter I had no problems whatsoever.

In the Ionian we rely heavily on our anchor . It can make or break a week on charter so always make a point of checking what the yacht you’re booking is equipped with. Even for a 30-footer I wouldn’t want under 50m of chain. If I was being demanding, as a rule of thumb I would multiply the length of the boat in meters x5, to get the minimum number of meters of chain I would like.

Favoured anchor types will vary depending upon the type of seabed or the area you’re in. Designs like the Bruce or Fluke can be outstanding in sandy areas like the Caribbean. CQRs can be brilliant where tidal flow direction can change, as the design allows them to twist without breaking out. Even fisherman anchors or grapnels can be useful in rocky areas and riverbeds. However, my years of experience in the Ionian have taught me that a Rocna is the best you can get for varied types of seabeds. At Sail Ionian the whole fleet is retrofitted with Rocnas, or their sister the Vulcan which doesn’t have the roll bar.

anchor in bay

Make sure your boat handover goes into detail on the windlass and where the trip switch or fuse is. You will want to know how to tighten the gypsy, and how to free drop the chain too. If you can test the windlass by dropping and raising chain, do so. It’s good to see if the windlass is slow or fast, whether it sounds healthy, and if there is any juddering or slipping (which is a good indication of a worn gypsy that should be replaced before you leave).

I have a real bugbear with skippers who don’t realise the importance of their crew on the bow. With a little training and explanation, they can be the yacht’s best asset when anchoring. I have lost count of the number of times I have started training a crew how to med moor , only to find that the bow person doesn’t have a clue what they are doing, and merely responds to shouted direction from the helm. I like to teach the bow person about techniques, types of seabeds, length of chain… all sorts. I guess some people aren’t that interested, but most seem to like to understand what they are doing!  A crew working together in this way is much more effective. When small problems arise, they can then be dealt with quickly. I like to teach some hand signals too, to stop the shouting over the noise of the windlass and the wind. A basic set of ‘drop’, ‘stop’, ‘up’ and ‘down’ are enough to deal with most needs. Knowledge of how to weigh anchor and control the chain when it’s coming in are invaluable too.

Don’t try to anchor on a steep declining seabed

This is one that is peculiar to deep water anchorages, of which we have many in the Ionian! It can be a common situation that you are trying to anchor near the shore, with the wind blowing the yacht off. However, because of the steepness of the seabed you have the bow in 5m of water but the stern in 10m of water! As you reverse and lay out chain the yacht is getting into progressively deeper and deeper water. The anchor just has no chance of holding as it is, in effect, being dragged down a hill. The moral of the story being to consider not just the material of the seabed, but also the bathymetry.

Deep water techniques

It is quite common on an Ionian charter that I will choose to anchor in well over 10 meters of water. The main constraints with depth are firstly the length of chain we carry, and secondly the strength of the windlass motor. At Sail Ionian, a typical 40ft charter yacht will carry at least 60 meters of chain. Using the old maxim of 4-5 times the depth of water, we get a maximum anchoring depth range of around 12-15 meters. Our windlasses can deadlift a substantial weight, but when you consider the length of chain plus the anchor at the end, it is a considerable lift. We usually recommend to guests to always stick under 12 meters, much deeper than that and fuses can start blowing!

When dropping in these depths it is important to remember that it takes time for the anchor to hit the seabed. We often see people reversing as they drop, not realising by the time the anchor catches they can easily be 15-20 meters further away from where they intended the anchor to be. This can cause all sorts of complications, from changes in depth to distance from the shore for long lining. In fact, the most common issue this causes is when long lining; the yacht ends up much closer to the shore than intended, with much less chain out that desired! It’s easy to time your windlass over 10 meters of chain to get an idea how quick it is, then you know roughly how long it will take for the anchor to drop to the seabed.

I would advise positioning the bow where you want the anchor, then letting down 10m of chain, before starting to reverse into the wind, ensuring your anchor is where you want it.

Always look for clear water

The colour of the water is the first give-away of what sort of seabed you’re dealing with, and where in a bay you should drop the hook. A normal Ionian bay will have beautiful clear water and be a uniform mid blue, with patches of light blue. Those light blue patches are usually sandy, without any weed, and are a great spot to aim for. Firstly, you should explore the anchorage at slow speed, keeping one eye on the depth gauge and one eye on the water. Different parts of the bay may be windier that other too. Once you’ve picked your spot, look for those lighter patches of water and aim to get the bow over them. Here is another great example of where you need to reply on your crew on the bow. They will need to direct you to position the bow of the boat over the sand and drop the anchor there. Again, a little communication in terms of positioning and depth, or length of chain, is needed, so that you can get the anchor down on the sand before you start moving in reverse.

boat anchor

Wind directions & local knowledge

Considering wind direction is one of the first lessons to be taught about anchoring. It is, however, complicated by the fickle nature of the Ionian wind. At the mercy of island topography, katabatics, and even time of day, picking a spot that isn’t a lee shore can sometimes be harder than you think. Often a perfect lunchtime anchorage with a light offshore breeze can change to a lee shore once the temperature of the day increases and the afternoon anabatic winds start up.

The first time I saw local Greek charter skippers long lining off the beach in Marmagas on Ithaca I was confused. The morning breeze was light and blowing them onto the shore. I assumed their guests must have asked to be as close to the beach as possible. By the end of lunch though, the wind had switched to a feisty offshore 15 knots, gusting above 20, and my anchor was dragging into deeper water where I had dropped in the middle of the bay. Those Greek charter skippers were sitting comfortably, being blown off the beach, with the strain on their long lines, not on their anchor. It’s always worth keeping a humble eye on what other sailors are doing – there’s always someone cleverer than yourself!

Free dropping chain vs. lowering on the windlass

As divisive an issue as any in sailing circles! Many who care for their own windlass much prefer to treat it carefully and drop chain freely, by loosening the gypsy, taking the strain away from the windlass motor. At Sail Ionian, we always tell our guests to drop using the windlass though. We feel it gives guests more control, and there is less danger of fingers getting near fast moving lengths of chain. There is also a tendency for the gypsy not to be tightened enough after free dropping. This can result in slipping when weighing anchor, which in turn causes a lot of engineering call-outs and a large fuel bill for a very quick job of tightening the gypsy to the correct tension.

The most important time to consider dropping freely, and quickly, is when you are anchoring in a very windy situation. Sometimes you just want to get the anchor down fast and keep the boat under control using the engine. This can be particularly true for long lining or med mooring in a crosswind. Releasing the chain slowly on the windlass motor can slow the yacht to the point where you lose all steerage.

Whenever free dropping anchor, it is essential to check the bitter end is attached to the yacht securely, and to slow the rate of descent as you approach the end of the chain. Bitter ends are designed to separate when needed, and the speed and weight of a full chain locker dropped without braking can be enough to rip the bitter end d-ring from the deck. I have seen the confused look on faces as the end of the chain follows the anchor to the seabed. Another good reason to train your bow person well! If this ever happens to you, try and note your position in the bay, or hit the MOB button on the GPS quickly. If they know where to look the charter company may be able to dive and find the tackle, saving you a large bill.

ionian

Checking you’re well in

Finally, a lot of the issues I see out there could be avoided with a final check to test the anchor. I often see anchors dropped and engine off within seconds, with no attempt to test how well the anchor is dug in. I prefer to sit there with the engine running at least 1000 rpm in reverse for the 5 minutes it takes for the kettle to boil, before I’m happy to relax.

It is a fact of life in the Ionian that there is a lot of weed on the seabed and often anchors can get caught up in this, appear to have set, but break free after a persistent snatch. But this can also be the situation when you have a lot of chain out too. The weight of the chain alone can be enough to resist light winds, or low revs on the engine. It’s only with more force that it becomes clear the anchor is not actually in, and the boat starts drifting.

I have spent many a stormy Vliho night on the bow of an anchored yacht in over 30 knots of wind and not moved anywhere. A well dug in anchor can cope with a surprising amount of force. So don’t be shy with checking you’re set, give her some revs and sit back for a few minutes. You’ll sleep a lot better.

Yacht tragedy forces morgan stanley to find new international chair even as grief is fresh.

On August 19, Morgan Stanley International’s chairman, Jonathan Bloomer, was killed in the Mediterranean Sea aboard the Bayesian yacht, alongside his wife Judy, Autonomy founder Mike Lynch and four others. While the human cost of the tragedy is still being felt around the world, Morgan Stanley must now address a very real hole on its leadership team.

“Jonathan’s leadership and experience helped the firm manage a period of complex change for our international businesses,” said Morgan Stanley CEO Ted Pick in a statement provided to Fortune . “He has been a friend and mentor to many and we will all greatly miss his wise counsel and spirit of kindness.”

Bloomer ran the board of Morgan Stanley International (MSI), a London-based subsidiary of Morgan Stanley, regulated in the United Kingdom, and doing business in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa . While MSI chief executive, Clare Woodman runs the business side of the subsidiary, the board Bloomer oversaw "determines the strategy" of the company, according to a 2017 regulatory disclosure, "and provides oversight of the key risk and control issues that the execution of the strategy presents."

Over the course of Bloomer’s tenure governing Morgan’s international board, the United Kingdom left the European Union, the Middle East economy emerged on the global stage, and Africa forged complex ties with China. Now, as populist political currents continue to surge throughout Europe , Bloomer’s replacement could find himself leading in equally, or more difficult conditions.

Big shoes to fill

Jane Edison Stevenson, global vice chair at C-suite hiring firm Korn Ferry says that with the passing of a chair, the bank "will need to take a look at what they anticipate to be the biggest challenges and opportunities for their business,” adding, “I can't imagine that it would not include someone who's equally comfortable being connected to and in a network with heads of state, as they are with heads of businesses.”

Had Bloomer been on the board of the Morgan Stanley parent a standing committee specifically established “to oversee plans for management development and succession” would directly help select the replacement. But a source with knowledge of the matter says, “a new non-executive chair will be selected by Morgan Stanley executives in London.”

Though Morgan is being tight-lipped on the actual succession process, Edison Stevenson says it’s not unusual for bank subsidiaries to conduct their own research, and nominate their own leaders, to a certain point. “It needs to be interconnected,” she says. “So typically, there would be oversight directly from the parent organization. And it depends on the way they're structured and the way it works as to whether they would have veto power.”

Fortune asked Morgan Stanley how the hiring process was being structured but the company did not provide a response.

A look at others to hold the position provides some insight into the type of executive Morgan Stanley is likely to seek. Those include Bloomer’s immediate predecessor, Ian Plenderleigh, who worked as an executive director at the Bank of England and deputy governor of the South African Reserve Bank before being appointed a Morgan Stanley director in 2011. He was appointed chairman in January 2014, and eventually bequethed the title to Bloomer.

By contrast, another previous chairman of the MSI board was Walid Chammah, who was at Morgan Stanley for 14 years before being appointed director in 2007. The decision to alternate between a chair who’d been at the firm for a decade, and a relative newcomer, is typical, according to Charles Shanley, co-founder of Shanley Search Partners. He says about half of bank execs are promoted from within the company, while Edison Stevenson puts the number closer to 70%.

“So you have a little bit of refreshment,” she says. “And yet people have confidence that they have a career trajectory, that there are places to go, things to do.”

A hard charging leader

In the early 2000s Bloomer made a name for himself as a hard-driving, if controversial leader, when as the CEO of London-based insurance giant Prudential he tried to raise £1 billion to expand beyond the U.K. Though the effort was eventually unsuccessful, after Bloomer’s passing, Prudential credited him for helping expand its focus beyond the U.K. “We wouldn’t be the company we are today if it wasn’t for him,” the company said in a statement.

Bloomer was appointed as a non-executive director of MSI in November 2016, according to regulator documents , and two years later, as Brexit was picking up momentum, was appointed chair.

One of Bloomer’s successors has already been appointed. Earlier this month, U.K.-based insurance firm Hiscox—for which he served as chair since last year— announced it had appointed independent non-executive director Colin Keogh as interim leader. “We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event,” said Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain in a statement provided to Fortune prior to the discovery of Bloomer’s body. “Our thoughts are with all those affected.”
