Selecting the right destination

and invite your friends to the Monaco Grand Prix or the Cannes Film Festival.

Want to party with the stars at the Cannes Film Festival? Just ask

Prefer a private desert island-type setting to celebrate with your friends and family? The  Caribbean and  The Bahamas have plenty of secluded bays in which to anchor and spend quality time with your favourite people. Here is a selection of the finest destinations to host your super, superyacht party.

You can always find a beach to call your own

Spring signals the start of the yachting season on the Côte d’Azur, with the Cannes Film Festival opening the show. From May, the Riviera lights up as A-list celebrities descend to see and be seen at arguably the most glamorous film festival in the world. The best parties are, of course, on board the most exclusive superyachts, berthed in the marina right next to the red carpet at the Palais des Festivals.

Magicians or musicians, club singers or cocktail slingers, we can add sparkle to any occasion

Further along the coast, Monaco glitters with seven centuries of regal heritage. The iconic Port d’Hercule is within champagne-popping range of the gilded principality’s world-renowned gourmet restaurants, A-list clubs, and designer boutiques. Sport is also a favourite pastime in Monaco, and the principality hosts several popular events including the Formula 1 Grand Prix in May.

As evening comes, the parties begin

Chartering a superyacht trackside at this event provides not only the best vantage point for you and your guests to watch the action, but also puts you right in the thick of the action where you can literally smell the gasoline and burning tyre rubber from these amazing cars. Burgess has the right contacts to also get you into the pit lane, rubbing shoulders with the drivers before the race, and partying afterwards at the Amber Lounge.

Despite its reputation as the  Balearics ' party-island, Ibiza has more recently evolved to be among the Mediterranean’s most glamorous charter cruising grounds. The vibe throughout the summer season is all about lazy lunches, diving off deck in secret coves, and losing yourself in the rural countryside inland. The White Isle as Ibiza is known, also offers the waterborne visitor an almost unrivalled selection of beach clubs.

There is no cooler way to arrive at Ibiza's fabled beach clubs

Arrive in style by tender and join the glitterati enjoying the sunshine and sunset accompanied by chilled music before heading back on board to celebrate in style. Alternatively, as the sun sets and the vibe picks up a beat or two, head to Ibiza Town’s effortlessly cool hangouts where you can dance until dawn to the world's best DJs.

St Barth is without a doubt the New Year’s Eve capital of the Caribbean. Always a haven for celebrities at any time of year, the island brings in the new year with impromptu New Year’s Eve 'boat hopping' parties and stops at the many beach bars that dot the island. As the clock ticks towards midnight, step up on deck aboard your superyacht for a front row seat to the kaleidoscope of fireworks exploding over Gustavia Harbour.

Ring in the New Year in impeccable style

This French-speaking island is perfect for a lavish New Year’s Eve celebration. Think cocktails on deck, al fresco dinner with friends before cranking up the sound system to celebrate the passing of midnight. Expect relaxed, short-distance cruising as you island-hop through the Leeward Islands in the days following the celebrations. What better way to kick off your year than this?

Harbour Island, Bahamas

The Bahamas offers a variety of activities for parties aboard and ashore. From local restaurants, hanging out with friends at a lively beach bar, or your very own private sunset beach party, whatever you choose to do, the Bahamian culture will facilitate, with festivals, music, dancing and colourful parades continuing into the early hours. 'Fresh up' and enjoy life Bahmian-style.

The Bahamas is a blaze of bold colours and laid-back lifestyles

Harbour Island has recently come into the limelight with the arrival of a handful of chic new places recently opening on the island. With its pink-sand beach and pretty pastel cottages, the shoreline provides a perfect backdrop to sunset cocktails on board, followed by a trip ashore to a party at the legendary Vic-Hum Club. The oldest nightclub on the island, the open-air dancefloor at this humble yet iconic destination has attracted celebrities the world over.

Choosing the right yacht

From the crew to the layout, the facilities and even the décor, there are many facets of a yacht that, when combined, will influence the success of a superyacht party. The most successful charter yachts lend themselves to any type of occasion, be it a cocktail party or formal dinner party.

Some yachts and crews lend themselves to entertainment better than others

No matter what the style of celebration, there is a yacht to suit every taste. Likewise the crew can make or break a celebration, whether because they can theme any party in a creative way, or simply because the six-star service and smiling faces will give the party the right vibe.

Birthday parties, anniversaries, retirement, there's always a reason to celebrate

Burgess yachts with bars

Whether celebrating, drinking sunset cocktails, a pre-dinner drink or watching sports events, the bar on a yacht is generally one of the focal points on board a superyacht. They come in many forms, ranging from wet bars on the sun deck to sit-up bars in the beach club, sky lounge bars and cosy saloon bars, backlit-onyx bars, and elegant marble-top bars.

Have fun with a theme

Nothing says party more than people dressing up, and themed parties are almost always popular among charter guests. They create memorable experiences – even more so when the yacht is decked out in appropriately themed decorations.

A themed event adds theatre and means everyone gets into the spirit

From an elegant James Bond-themed evening, perhaps with poker and blackjack tables set up, to a retro-style '60s party with a dancefloor and appropriate playlist, or Pirates of the Caribbean, they can revolve around just about any concept imaginable.

A '60s theme comes with a deliciously groovy soundtrack

For those cruising in the Caribbean, consider a pirate party involving all the family. Many crews are well known for the creativity and polish of their themed parties. While keeping the younger guests entertained with a treasure hunt on the beach, you can enjoy sundowners on the sand.

A pirate theme comes with all sorts of fun narratives, treasure hunts and battles

Back on board enjoy drinks on the sun deck before dining al fresco on the main deck. If you're having a larger bash in port, have your pirate outfits sent ahead and the yacht dressed with pirate paraphernalia. Canapes and rum cocktails can be served in treasure chests!

Why are pirates called pirates? Because they Arrr!

While in the Mediterranean, perhaps cruising around the  Greek islands , a toga party might involve some Greek cuisine followed by dancing, and then a movie night under the stars with Mamma Mia or My Big, Fat, Greek Wedding on the big screen. Or while in Cannes, a Bollywood party, or in Monaco why not throw a Mexican fiesta during the Grand Prix?

A Mamma Mia party while cruising the Greek Islands? Why not!

Poolside parties

On the larger more modern superyachts spa pools are generally a given these days, and although some may be limited to a sun deck jacuzzi, the largest of the charter yachts usually have all manner of water features, ranging from infinity pools with waterfalls, glass-bottomed pools, swim-up bars, and pools with counter currents.

And then you have the real party yachts, with swimming pools that turn into dance floors, and built-in DJ booths for the ultimate occasion aboard. The 73m  TITANIA , for example, hosts her guests around the pool deck bar with seating for up to eight guests, and another four seats inside the pool itself, all complete with a DJ set up to create a real pool party atmosphere.

Consider your guest list

Whether your party is a small and intimate affair or a large, quayside event, most yachts can accommodate up to 12 guests while cruising and hundreds more while berthed alongside, when different rules apply.

However, understated elegance is key, with fewer guests and more quality time to socialise. In fact, 100-120 guests is often considered the tipping point of human intimacy and interaction, so keep this in mind when considering a larger gathering.

In port regulations allow yachts to welcome many more guests

Entertainment

Entertainment systems have always played an important role in the overall yacht party experience. Audio-visual technologies have changed significantly over the past decade, and the most successful charter yachts feature the most up-to-date, state-of-the-art and fully-integrated entertainment systems throughout their guest areas.

A tiered cinema and surround sound make sure everyone gets the best experience

From indoor and outdoor entertainment facilities, and the latest audio-visual equipment (including on-demand movies and music systems available throughout all guest areas and strong Wi-Fi for streaming), to private cinema rooms and outdoor cinema set-ups, almost anything available on land is also possible at sea.

An outdoor cinema screen delivers movies under the stars

Music and speakers

Music is an essential part of any party, and whether you prefer the dulcet tones of Adele during dinner or the pumping beats of a live DJ set during a dockside party, music always sets the tone. Surround sound systems for yachts with their own dedicated cinemas have become the norm, while built-in speakers on the party deck are fine tuned to deliver the best possible audio quality regardless of the musical genre.

Most charter yachts take sound quality very seriously indeed - the best of everything

Some yachts have a dual-purpose feature - a sun deck, for example - that transforms into a party deck after dark and music entices guests from open-air dining on the bridge deck below to party upstairs. Live bands are no longer de rigeur, instead world-famous DJs can be booked by your Burgess charter broker to come on board and play their set for your guests, with some big names keen to play private gigs.

A sun deck nightclub could welcome the biggest names in clubland

Gourmet dining with your own personal chef is obviously one of the principal attractions of any charter vacation, but however delicious the dishes may be, how your meals are presented will have a huge impact on the overall dining experience.

Why not bring a Michelin-starred celebrity chef on board for a private dining experience?

An al fresco or formal dining set-up large enough to seat the number of guests invited is of course a must. For larger, cocktail events, a few different open-air dining options are better suited. The trend for celebrity chefs catering for such large events is on the rise, working hand in hand with your own superyacht chef to create the ultimate tasty menu to wow your guests.

Huge swathes of guest deck space make for stellar entertainment

For some, proximity to the ocean is a must, so why not dine in a yacht's beach club right by the water’s edge. The 62m  BATON ROUGE , for example, features an ocean-level beach club that incorporates lounging areas and easy access to the water by day, and transforms into the ultimate al fresco dining area by night.

A huge beach club, like BATON ROUGE's, can really make a charter, day and night

Alternatively, many modern yachts feature Teppanyaki grills – perfect for guests looking to experience something a little different in a tropical climate. Plus you and your guests get the chef's table experience with wonderful dishes prepared before your very eyes and served straight from the grill.

A Teppanyaki grill adds a touch of theatre to any meal

The raised aft deck seating area aboard the 56m MY SEANNA can be converted into a dancefloor complete with state-of-the-art sound. There's also a backlit bar and lounge/dining area on the bridge deck, a 10-person spa pool that has its own bar, and a beach club at water level.

Helipads present the ideal option for a dancefloor and a huge jacuzzi to cool your feet afterwards

The aforementioned 73m  TITANIA also features a beach club, complete with sauna, which can then be converted into a nightclub to continue celebrations into the night. You could even have your make-up and hair done in the yacht's beauty salon before the evening celebrations begin.

TITANIA's beach club transforms into a nightclub after dark

Special touches make it memorable

Details make all the difference. Ambient lighting, an attentive crew, the quality of sound or the welcome cocktail, the most successful and memorable superyacht parties are those where the crews have gone the extra mile. The occasions will usually dictate the type of party and the style.

Tablescaping is just one way of elevating your entertainment experience

For example, an anniversary celebration might have a more romantic theme, with soft lighting and candles, and elegant crockery and flowers all adding to the intimate sense of occasion. A New Year’s Eve celebration or birthday might however require more of a fun or risqué theme. Whatever you want, it can be done.

Romance is in the air! It's impossible for love not to blossom

Most of the yachts in the Burgess charter fleet are designed for entertaining, with guest areas outstandingly assigned to allow for all manner of occasions according to desire. The yachts in the selection above are just afew of those recommended by Burgess charter experts as welcoming celebrations.

COMMERCIAL PONTOON PARTY BOATS

In 2020 we expanded our commercial tour boat offerings to include non-pedaling Party Pontoons and Palapa Pontoons (tiki boats). This allowed our existing Cycleboat clients to broaden their operations and new clients to think BIG when starting up.

Construction oversight is done by our local OCMI, Portland MSU. Our boat models 26′ and larger are rated for partially protected waterways.

Customizable Party Boats

We have many standard party and palapa boat models to choose from. For custom configurations, additional naval architecture and design fees apply.

If these teak decks could talk. Paul McCartney tinkling the ivory keyboard. Elizabeth Taylor sunning herself on the top deck. Margaret Thatcher discussing world peace with Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. Harrison Ford taking a turn at the wheel.

Back in the 1980s, an invitation from Forbes magazine owner and consummate bon vivant , Malcolm Forbes, to join him aboard his beloved superyacht The Highlander was a reason for celebration.

And Forbes was a master when it came to celebrating. His first of many Fourth of July parties aboard The Highlander , anchored off Governors Island in New York Harbor, saw the world’s greatest movers and shakers piped aboard by tartan-clad Scottish bagpipers.

There on the yacht’s decks were the likes of Fiat boss Gianni Agnelli, Henry and Nancy Kissinger, David and Peggy Rockefeller and Brooke Astor. More than 150 Maine lobsters and 30 pounds of Scottish smoked salmon were reportedly flown in to feed the elite crowd.

During the five years Forbes owned the yacht, before his death in 1990, she traveled the globe; everywhere from then Communist China, to Bora-Bora, to Thailand, the Philippines and Alaska.

Launched in 1985, this was the last of five Forbes-owned yachts named The Highlander, after his family’s Scottish roots. But this one was unique. Designed by world-renowned designer Jon Bannenberg and built in Holland by Feadship , her dark green hull—said to be the color of dollar bills—stretched 162 feet bow to stern.

“She was nicknamed ‘The Ultimate Capitalist Tool’ for good reason,” the yacht’s current owner, New York-based interior designer Joanne de Guardiola told Robb Report . “Anyone who was anyone stepped aboard at some time during the ’80s.”

De Guardiola and her husband, investment banker Roberto de Guardiola, bought The Highlander from the Forbes estate back in 2012. And just as she’d done with the couple’s previous Feadship, the classic 159-foot Audacia , de Guardiola commissioned a top-to-bottom refit, this time with Florida’s Derecktor Shipyards.

“We had no thoughts of buying another yacht; we loved Audacia. But back in 2012, we had heard The Highlander was for sale and I went to take a look. She was not in great shape, but as a huge fan of Jon Bannenberg’s designs, and knowing her amazing history, we couldn’t resist,” she said.

The Iconic 164-foot Highlander was owned by Malcom Forbes but has undergone a complete refit

The yacht was built by Feadship and designed by Jon Bannenberg, the father of modern yacht design. The original dark-green exterior was said to be the color of a dollar bill.  Courtesy Jim Raycroft

The exhaustive, two-year refit took the steel and aluminum superyacht down to the studs. The yacht was extended by 12 feet to add a swim deck and rear “garage” for water toys; the top deck was lengthened. Effectively doubling its size, and the master stateroom was moved to where the observatory used to be.

The entire interior was redesigned and refitted with more modern materials and finishes. Out went the padded leather ceilings, the somber, dark green carpets and ornate Chippendale antique chairs; in went bleached-white Anigre paneling, wide-planked dark wood flooring, and brightly colored pop art.

One especially jaw-dropping feature de Guardiola created was the stunning, open-tread marble staircase from salon to upper deck. That and the new, glass-enclosed sky lounge with its disco vibe and blue onyx floor.

“The yacht didn’t really suit a family’s needs—she was really designed for Malcolm Forbes-style corporate entertaining,” says de Guardiola. “And if you wanted to splash in the water, you had to jump over the sides. Mr. Forbes didn’t like to swim.”

But de Guardiola is quick to add that her primary focus with the refit was evolving and not compromising Jon Bannenberg’s iconic design. “That’s what attracted me to the yacht in the first place.”

Mechanical improvements included the installation of Quantum zero speed stabilizers and full rebuilds for the trusty 900 hp Detroit Diesels. They still give the yacht a top speed of 18 mph, cruising at an easy 14 mph with transatlantic capability.

One of Highlander ‘s lounges.  Courtesy IYC

With kids in mind, Highlander —de Guardiola dropped the “the”—is brimming with water toys. Everything from Waverunners, Seabobs, banana floats and kayaks, to Malcolm Forbes’ much-loved, Ferrari-red 22-foot Donzi speedboat. Sadly, his other favorite, a custom-built Cigarette Racing powerboat, is no more. After being fully restored during the refit, the boat caught fire while Highlander was anchored off the Amalfi Coast in Italy.

“My husband was just heading off with our daughter and friends when the fire broke out,” de Guardiola says. “Everyone ended up in the water but were okay. It was one cool boat. It ran at over 60 mph.”

Since the refit, the de Guardiolas have taken friends and family all around the Mediterranean, hanging out at the Monaco Grand Prix, Cannes Film Festival, and hitting most of the Greek islands. Winters were in the Caribbean. Typically, they spent eight to 10 weeks a year aboard.

So why the decision to sell? De Guardiola says she’s looking for her next project: “As with my interior design work, I love the intellectual challenge of a makeover. It’s also time. We feel we’ve been good custodians. Now someone else should enjoy her.”

Highlande r is listed with IYC in Fort Lauderdale for $8.5 million.

How To Host The Most Memorable Yacht Party Ever

A yacht party is one of the most fun and extravagant ways to celebrate an occasion. Not only are they unique, but they can also be far more versatile than you might think. It's the ultimate venue for a glamorous party; think top-notch DJs, magically mixed drinks, and your favorite vape juice  here are a few tips for planning and throwing the ultimate yacht party.

party yacht design

Pick the Right Yacht

Firstly, you need to pick the right yacht. They come in all shapes and sizes, and some are better for parties than others. You need to pick one that is the right size but in terms of space for guests, not a boat that is big because it has an onboard gym, helipad, etc. You need one that can hold dozens of guests comfortably.

One-Day vs. Multi-Day

The need for beds and extra facilities will also come into play if this is a multi-day event. If you are planning on guests staying on the yacht, you need one big enough to house them, not just one with enough space for a party.

Bedding Options

Many yachts will have multiple sleeping options, which would include couches that can be turned into beds. It is important to remember that there are limitations; therefore, you need to have a set guest list for those who will sleep on the yacht well before the party date.

Considering this is a party, you need a yacht that is fitted with extra facilities, such as a kitchen, bathroom, possibly showers, etc. It would be difficult to have an easy-flowing party if guests had to constantly leave the boat to go to the bathroom, get food, etc.

Docked vs. At Sea

Another decision you need to make is whether the yacht will be docked or if you will go out to sea. Docked is typically easier as you can have all your food and drinks on land, and there are more options for guests to move around, sit somewhere else, etc.

Going out to sea is far more fun and exciting, but it does require more planning. You need to ensure that the yacht is fully stocked with everything you may need, from bottle openers to toilet paper, as well as all the food and drinks for all your guests.

When it comes to weather, it isn’t about safety at sea, as your captain will make that decision, but it is more about guest comfort and available undercover space. If you are out at sea and it begins to rain, and you all have to get below deck or under cover, it can be a very tight squeeze.

Instead, choose a yacht that has ample cover or below-deck space, or ensure you have large umbrellas that can be set up in the event of a downpour.

Pick a Theme

Once you have chosen your yacht, a theme is a great way to add a layer of fun to the entire event. When it comes to themes, the sky is the limit, as you can choose almost anything, and it can easily work in a yacht setting.

A few themes that always work well are black-tie, James Bond, etc. To add an extra layer of excitement, consider a pirate-themed extravaganza where guests can don their finest pirate costumes  and embark on an unforgettable voyage of swashbuckling adventure and maritime merriment. The goal is to make the theme memorable, as an average theme can quickly turn the party into a forgettable event.

Food & Drink

Food and drinks are two of the most important things for any party. The first decision you need to make is whether you will have buffet-style food  or canapes that can be handed out throughout the night. Depending on your budget and the amount of guests you have, you can hire a chef to cook lunch or dinner onboard, too.

For drinks, many high-end yachts will have a bar; this means you can hire a bartended for the day/night that can serve drinks and also mix up a few cocktails for your guests. All of these things will cost more money, but it does add an extravagant touch that is hard to beat.

party yacht design

Music & Entertainment

Another essential for any great party is music and entertainment. Once again, you have multiple options for both, depending on your budget. If you want it to be more budget-friendly, a laptop or phone with a few playlists  plugged into the sound system will do the job.

If you want to go the extra mile, you can hire a DJ to come play at the party. There will be ample space for them to set up, and not only will it keep the party going all night long, but being able to do requests, sing-alongs, etc, make the event that much more fun.

party yacht design

Finally, it is always important for you and your guests to understand the safety aspect of being on a yacht, especially if you go out to sea. Consulting with the captain beforehand will allow you to create a mini “safety briefing” that can be included with the invitations.

It is also important to clearly tape off or lock areas or rooms that shouldn’t be accessed by guests. Once again, the captain can handle this, but making signs and informing your guests will ensure everyone is on the same page and stays safe throughout the party.

How To Plan the Perfect Yacht Birthday Party

Celebrate your most stylish birthday yet with an unforgettable yacht birthday party. read our tips on how to plan for hosting a birthday party on a yacht.

Whether your ideal celebration includes a large group of friends, a family gathering, or a romantic day with your partner, a yacht birthday party ensures the day goes down as one of the best birthdays in history.

Boataffair can help you throw the perfect yacht birthday party - from the planning to the location - and will make sure your special day goes off without a hitch.

Can you rent a yacht for a birthday party?

You can rent a yacht for a birthday party. The combination of sumptuous luxury and a unique setting make for an unforgettable party experience! Boataffair offer half or full-day charters on a fleet of luxury superyachts in worldwide hotspots like the Greek Islands, party-hardy Miami, sun-soaked Marbella, and sophisticated Dubai.

Yacht birthday parties range from sophisticated to wild, and the tone of the party is entirely up to you. For example, if you're celebrating a 20-something’s big day, then champagne, birthday cake, music and water toys will be central to the celebrations. However if you’re looking for a more refined experience, perhaps for a 60th birthday party, then a gourmet meal experience aboard a superyacht could be just the ticket.

Choose from vessels like the Sunseeker 90 for a larger group. For a medium sized gathering, the spacious Azimut 43 Fly Motor Yacht  is highly recommended. And what can beat the opulent Ferretti 92 Motor Yacht if you’re really looking to impress your guests.

How do you host a birthday party on a yacht?

There are many elements to consider if you are planning to host a birthday party on a yacht. Below is a list of things to consider when you’re playing host for someone else’s big day, or planning your own party:

  • Location Picking the right location for your party is key. What kind of scenery do you prefer? For example beaches, or a cityscape. Are water activities a priority? Is there a particular location that offers things to do beyond the yacht charter (an island to visit, a restaurant to dine in, etc.)?
  • Weather Optimal weather is a factor when considering the location. Weather varies depending on the season, so make sure you check your potential destination to make sure you’re not planning a trip during a stormy season! Or, if a little rain doesn’t bother you, opt for a vessel that has plenty of cabin/covered space for you and your guests.
  • Party Theme Do you want to let loose and throw the party of the year? Or is your event to be more of a sophisticated evening with fine dining? Parties come in many shapes and forms and Boataffair can cater to each end of the spectrum.
  • Food and drink Boataffair can arrange for a chef to cook your party a gourmet meal onboard or organize an evening on land at a 5-star restaurant. Onboard snacks, drinks, and alcohol can also be requested.
  • Planning Service Boataffair caters to whatever the occasion calls for—that can mean anything from balloons, decorations, food/drink, a live DJ, special music, dancing, and much more! We’re happy to accommodate specific requests to make the day extra special!

How many people can fit on a party yacht?

Most of our private yachts are designed to legally carry a maximum of 12 people. This is because a yacht which carries more than 12 people it is considered a 'Passenger ship' and must comply with extensive SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) regulations.

Can you have more than 12 guests on a yacht?

At Boataffair, we do not typically rent out boats for more than 12 people. This is due to Boataffair’s focus on private, premier yachting.

We don't operate as a mass-market service; instead, we reserve our boats for boutique experiences for families, groups of friends, and couples. This is why most of our yachts are limited to 12 people or less.

Additionally, many of our motor yachts are designed to legally carry no more than 12 people, and often overnight stays allow for a maximum of 8-10 people.

You’ll want to keep in mind how many people can fit on a yacht before you start building your guest list. But don't worry, you can have wonderful birthday parties on our yachts with less than 12 people!

Please reach out to us if you have questions about your guest list and we will work with you to find a yacht option that best matches your party style. We do have some options that allow for big groups, but we specialize in and excel with parties of 12 or less as well.

Boataffair offers special occasion charter yachts across the globe and the location of the birthday cruise dictates how the experience plays out. If you have fond memories of a past trip to the Mediterranean, Boataffair offers dreamy day cruises with miles of stunning scenery in Greece, Croatia, Malta. If a party atmosphere is more your speed, book your big day in pulsing party destinations like Miami or Dubai. Looking for a more laid-back experience? Spain and London provide the elegance of a more subtle affair.

Wherever and however you choose to celebrate, make your (or a loved one’s) next birthday one to remember with a charter yacht celebration

The future of yacht design

9 September 2024

Author: Joanna Lewis

Yacht design is constantly evolving as yacht designers push the boundaries of traditional design and new technologies come to the fore.

The world’s most iconic yachts boast striking design features that set them apart from other vessels, from innovative naval architecture to design features that focus on enhancing a yacht’s green credentials.

Here we take a look at some of the most pioneering yacht design trends changing the yachting industry for the better.

The evolution of yacht design - rendering superyacht

Interior yacht design trends

Interior yacht design has changed significantly to factor in modern yachting lifestyles.

Yacht interiors now have a strong focus on flexible layouts that are more open-plan. Furthermore, there is a growing trend for onboard spaces that blur the boundaries between a yacht’s interior and exterior areas. Vast glass sliding doors that can be fully opened, retractable roofs, and fold-down balconies are designed to completely eliminate any boundary between a yacht’s interior and exterior.

Wellness is a big part of the yachting lifestyle, with private yachts now dedicating a significant portion of their real estate to spas, fitness suites, and yoga and meditation areas. Interior designers are also now bringing nature onboard, with hydroponic and vertical gardens that not only enhance wellbeing but also offer chefs access to an organic garden.

The latest interior yacht design trends are also harnessing exciting new materials such as sustainable textured wood, recycled glass, natural stone, and fine fabrics with a firm nod to organic forms that mimic nature.

Finally, advances in digital technology are transforming interiors, with vast tech windows or walls that offer virtual views and streaming services.

Exterior yacht design trends

Exterior yacht design has, arguably, seen the most significant shift in design trends from vessels with soft curved exteriors that mimic the organic shapes found in nature to avant-garde vessels that challenge conventional yacht design.

One key advancement in technology has been glass, which has led to a slew of eye-catching vessels with vast glass superstructures. Not only does the use of glass create head-turning vessels, but this material also floods the interior with light, while providing owners and their guests with breathtaking views of the ocean.

In addition, yacht exteriors are becoming more striking, with deck spaces being used in new ways. Yacht designers are now placing more emphasis on a yacht’s exterior with an increasing amount of real estate being designated to alfresco dining.

Vast beach clubs are now the norm on modern-day vessels, enhancing an owner’s connection to the water and direct access to the sea. It is common to see multiple exterior decks for relaxing and entertaining.

New advances in hull design are also helping to transform onboard comfort and the overall performance of luxury yachts. A hull typically amounts to around 70% of a yacht’s total structural design, making hull design a complex part of a yacht’s overall design.

Thanks to advances in hull designs, modern yachts now boast enhanced seakeeping and energy efficiencies.

There is no question that the world of yacht design is constantly evolving as designers seek to create ever more eye-catching vessels that meet the demands and lifestyle habits of today’s yachting enthusiasts

How do you throw a party on a yacht?

A group of friends has fun at a Hollywood yacht theme party.

To throw a party on a yacht, here’s a short step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Choose the yacht: Select a suitable yacht for your party. Consider the size of your guest list, the amenities available on the yacht, and the duration of your event. Ensure the yacht meets all safety requirements and has the necessary licenses.

Step 2: Set a date and time: Determine the date and time for your yacht party, keeping in mind the availability of the yacht and the convenience of your guests. Plan to ensure you secure the desired date.

Step 3: Determine the guest list: Create a guest list and send out invitations well in advance. Consider the yacht’s capacity and ensure your guest list aligns with it. Provide clear RSVP instructions to manage attendance.

Step 4: Choose a theme: Select a theme for your yacht party to add an element of excitement. Consider the preferences and interests of your guests and tailor the theme accordingly. Themes for boat parties can range from elegant and formal to fun and casual, depending on the occasion.

Step 5: Plan the menu: Decide on the type of food and beverages you want to serve. Consider the logistics of catering on a yacht, such as limited kitchen space and the need for stable serving options. Opt for easy-to-eat and well-prepared dishes that cater to different dietary preferences.

Step 6: Decorate the yacht: Enhance the ambiance by decorating the yacht to match your chosen theme. Use appropriate decorations suitable for the yacht environment and securely fasten them to withstand movement. Consider the size of the yacht and ensure decorations do not obstruct any safety equipment.

Step 7: Coordinate entertainment: Plan entertainment options to keep guests engaged throughout the party. This can include live music, a DJ, games, or hiring a professional entertainer. Consider the available space on the yacht and the preferences of your guests.

Step 8: Ensure safety: Prioritize the security of your guests by having life jackets, first aid kits, and safety equipment readily available on the yacht. Familiarize yourself with emergency procedures and communicate them to your guests.

Step 9: Communicate details: Keep your guests informed about the logistics, such as the boarding location, parking options, and any specific instructions related to the yacht party. Provide clear directions to ensure a smooth boarding process.

Step 10: Enjoy the party: On the day of the party, double-check all arrangements, including food, beverages, decorations, and entertainment. Greet your guests, ensure their comfort, and enjoy the festivities on the yacht.

Incorporating a captivating yacht party theme can take your celebrations to extraordinary heights. With careful planning, strategic decorations, and attention to detail, you can create a memorable yacht party experience that will be discussed for years. So, set sail with the perfect yacht party theme and let the festivities begin!

It’s My Party Yacht: 8 Tips for Creating the Ultimate Yacht Party

party-yacht_1

The ocean breeze. The salty air. Endless possibilities.

If you want your guests to feel like movie stars, take them on the open seas. Planning a party on a yacht doesn’t have to be a headache. Your partygoers will drink in the elegance and sophistication and talk about your party far into the future.

For the ultimate guide to throwing an unforgettable event on a party yacht, read on. These 8 tips will make your party the best.

1. Be Clear About Party Flow Instructions

There’s nothing worse than being a guest at a party and seeing the food, but not knowing if you’re allowed to eat. If you can have the captain make small announcements to let guests know when the next part of the evening has begun, you’ll help them avoid feeling awkward and out of place.

Clear labels can help with this. And if guests are allowed to partake of something right away or all night, a small sign that says “Buffet open all evening” can help.

You want partygoers to feel at home and comfortable. Then they’ll relax and have fun , rather than feeling unsure and embarrassed.

2. Dance Floor and DJ

One of the best reasons to choose a yacht is it comes with a dance floor. Especially once you’re underway, guests are ready to loosen up and start moving. You want a welcoming space where your passengers will have fun and make lasting memories.

Even the boldest dancers won’t get the dancing started if the music isn’t right. Make sure you hire the best DJ to curate the list of tunes to the crowd. Then the guests will go home tired and happy, having spent the whole night moving and grooving.

3. Prioritize Safety on the Party Yacht

Some basic announcements from the captain at the beginning of the cruise will make guests feel safe without boring them. At the start, everything is new and interesting so they don’t lose interest or stop listening during important instructions.

Taking a moment to let them know where emergency items are and how to proceed in case anything happens helps them feel prepared and ready to relax.

4. The Perfect Menu

For passengers who’ve never experienced this type of vessel before, you’ll wow them with the quality of food available. And the ones who’ve come to expect a gourmet meal on board ship, you can still exceed their expectations.

Work with your chef and event planner to choose the right menu for your guests. Make sure you cater to everyone’s preferences so that no one feels bad asking for special accommodations. Little touches like that make the party unforgettable.

5. Go Somewhere Unique

Ask about the different routes available and their advantages. You have the chance to show your guests part of the city they’ve never seen before. Unique sightseeing opportunities include different vistas at night, light shows, or wildlife native to the area.

One of the things to know about an excursion on a party yacht is that there are many itinerary options. Make the most of your event by scheduling the right course for the trip. Let the guests know about the special places to behold with an announcement from the captain as you pass by.

6. Think of the Little Things

Extra amenities like medicine for seasickness is a must. Many guests may never have been on a boat like this one, and they don’t know how they’ll react. Rather than having people feeling awful, give them something to take the edge off.

Find a way to make it known that these things are available without a big announcement. You don’t want too many people thinking they feel sick because of the power of suggestion and ruining the party vibe.

Instead, post a small sign in the bathroom, or ask your attendants to watch for signs and mention the availability of medicine as the need arises.

Fancy soap and thick towels make the small bathroom feel luxurious. Any special length you can go to to make the cruise a rocking success is worth it. For business executives, branding their luxury items with their business personalizes the experience.

7. Ambiance and Decor

The last thing guests think about is the decor on board–unless it’s not right. Then it can throw the party out of sync.

Work with the yacht’s party planners to get the right vibe for the party, and make sure no one notices the decor because everything is perfect. You have so many options when it comes to designing the evening. Take full advantage of what’s available to make your party appropriate for the attendees.

8. Bonus Luxuries

Work with your tour guide or party planner to think of some extras for your guests. If the evening was already special, they won’t be expecting anything else. But imagine their surprise if you hand them something else as they disembark.

A fresh-baked cookie or a party favour to remember the evening puts the night over the top. They won’t forget the event or your hospitality any time soon.

I’m On A Boat

Your next event on a party yacht will be unforgettable if you remember these tips. From the safety announcement at the beginning to the bonus gift as passengers disembark, they’ll remember the event for years to come.

Remember to take them to a special place, plan an elegant menu, and curate the music to facilitate a great dance floor.

There’s something about a white party that presents an irresistible lure. Perhaps it’s the ease of outfit planning. The pristine photo ops. Or that VIP feeling comes with being dressed head to toe in such an elegant color. Guests LOVE a white party. And we love planning them. From linens and flowers to decor and other creative twists, our luxury yachts are the perfect setting to customize your event.

White party on a yacht

Trust us when we say that a white party never goes out of style.

5. Yacht Rock

Get ready to rock. Get ready to rock to chart-topping hits from the late 70s and early 80s as you cruise to the sounds of Hall & Oats, The Doobie Brothers, Chicago, Steely Dan, Toto… and that’s just the first half hour. Guests will have fun with their attire. Anything goes, from flipped-out polo collars, boat shoes, and white shorts to Captain’s hats and their favorite pair of shades. For a flashier ensemble, channel your inner Miami Vice vibes.

Yacht Rock. It’s one of our favorite combos.

6. Masquerade Ball

Add a little mystery to your party with a masquerade ball. Feathered masks, jewel tones, and elaborate make-up will up the ante.

mas

Dress the yacht with candelabras, chandeliers, drapes, and lanterns to add some sparkle.

A masquerade ball is also the perfect setting for a murder mystery game or scavenger hunt. And the perfect activity for your guests to lean into the theme.

Don’t forget the photo booth to capture the glamorous costumes and dazzling allure. Along with a professional photographer on board, opt for a shimmering backdrop with streamers and props.  Come one, come all!

Nautical Charm in a Yacht Birthday Party

When throwing a yacht party, a nautical theme tops the list for many reasons. It’s fitting, charming, and makes the most of your party yacht rental experience – ahoy!

Think navy stripes, captain hats, and gold accents. Guests will enjoy a nautical-themed adventure as they take in glimmering ocean views and a cool, coastal breeze.

PARTY GIRL review

By Editorial Team | 6th Mar 2017

YachtCharterFleet reviews the 63m/205ft superyacht ‘Party Girl’ after undertaking an exclusive guided tour at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

Launched by Dutch shipyard Icon Yachts in 2013, Party Girl is certainly the life and soul of a yacht charter, with a range of stylish entertainment areas designed to host both formal and informal occasions, from large social gatherings to precious downtime with loved ones.

The third build in the Dutch shipyard’s 62.5 metre series, superyacht Party Girl shares an engineering package and hull design with her predecessors, the 68m/221ft motor yacht ICON and the 63m/205ft motor yacht ‘Baton Rouge’ . But the similarities between the three sisterships end here and Party Girl is, in fact, very much her own yacht.

British design house Redman Whiteley Dixon – which worked alongside Icon Yachts on crafting her proven platform – also turned its hand to penning the 2013-build’s crisp and contemporary lines, highlighted by a simple all-white finish.

Party Girl’s individuality, however, comes through most clearly in the interior, where Italian firm Christiano Gatto Design has adjusted customisable parts of the layout to fulfil the Owner’s wishes for entertainment areas and family privacy. And, transforming these spaces, is a magnificent art deco style of decoration with oriental accents.

PARTY GIRL photo 1

Stepping aboard via the aft deck, guests are greeted by a unique inside-outside veranda, which serves a number of purposes. Curved glass doors slide open to reveal the wide space, with two blue and ivory lounging areas mirrored to port and starboard.

A circular wet bar divided in half by the sliding doors, so half sits inside and half sits outside, and teak flooring give the effect of being outside, especially as ample natural light floods through the bow windows. Yet it is these windows that provide shelter from the weather, needed for example when cruising in cooler climes.

As well as being a superb greeting place or a spot to simply unwind in, the veranda is also well-primed for watching sporting events on the two televisions. Fixed on the port and starboard walls, these TVs are hidden behind paintings when not in use.

PARTY GIRL photo 21

Further forward, in the 17-metre-long main salon, is where the glamorous art deco styling truly comes into its own. High-gloss wall panels and cabinetry in various woodgrains and black lacquer contrast with sumptuous ivory-hued upholstery for a warm, rich and sensuous ambience.

A wingback sofa and matching armchairs face a low coffee table to form an intimate lounge where guests can watch a widescreen television that pops up from a central bureau. Able to rotate, the TV can swivel to face the dining area forward, meaning guests will never miss that big game.

Continuing the mix of textures is a luxurious ivory carpet, offset by dark wooden floorboards that border the surrounds, and span across the full breath of the yacht in the dining area.

PARTY GIRL photo 24

At the centre of the dining area, which exudes formal glamour, is a handsome 14-seat rosewood table, which can convert from a long rectangle into two smaller squares.

Extremely glossy, the table is lined by fawn-coloured velvet chairs, adding to the opulence alongside a glittering, seven-metre-long chandelier by the artists of Venini.

During the day, however, the wide, recessed windows ensure the whole main salon is filled with natural light, amplifying the multitude of reflective surfaces.

Another highlight of the space is the Owner’s 300 bottle-strong wine cellar, which is hidden inside the forward bulwark and accessed by sliding doors.

PARTY GIRL photo 2

A corridor to starboard leads forward to the central lobby where a mirrored ceiling, and a beautiful Portoro marble floor with white and gold streaks continue the shimmering art deco effect.

Natural light highlights these glossy surfaces even further as it filters through a Japanese shoji screen, which forms the main entrance to starboard.

A beautiful toucan ornament made from sparkling gemstones looks over the scene, and a tan-coloured staircase, with floating treads and a handrail in weaved leather, leads to the decks above and below.

What is most striking about the interior and showcased spectacularly on the main deck is the incredible variety of materials, textures and finishes. From exotic woods to leather and stainless steel, the list is seemingly endless and evoke the theatrical contrasts of the art deco era.

What is most striking about the interior of PARTY GIRL is the incredible variety of materials, textures and finishes at work

Two master suites – located on the main deck forward and upper deck forward respectively – can combine to form a two-storey type penthouse. Such a setup enables Party Girl to cater for a variety of charter groups such as two groups of friends sharing charter costs.

Both suites take on a warmer, less formal feel when compared to the other spaces on the main deck due to the use of Canaletto walnut and ebony, woods which are much lighter in colour when compared to the dark, rich ones used in the main salon and foyer.

But the attractive combination of dark wooden floorboards and ivory textured carpet appears again, the latter of which is matched by the cream-coloured leather panelled headboards, ceilings and wall sections.

PARTY GIRL photo 28

In the full-beam master suite on the main deck, a large bed faces a wall-mounted TV to port and is divided from an intimate seating area to starboard by a tan leather arch. Stretching across the forward section is a his and hers en suite, clad in caramel-coloured Timber Silk stone.

From the private corridor that enters this suite via the main lobby, a staircase padded out in a golden brown brushed leather ascends up to the second suite. This access can, of course, be closed off if the quarters are being used by two different sets of guests.

The upper deck suite has the best views of the whole yacht as well as a private deck area forward, with seating and sunpads. A VIP suite is also found on this deck, located amidships to port, boasting styling similar to the two masters.

PARTY GIRL photo 31

The rich styling of the main salon is replicated in the guest cabins on the lower deck, which consist of two double cabins aft and two convertible twin cabins forward.

Defined by high-gloss mahogany and rosewood veneers, dark walnut surrounds, and padded ivory leather bedheads, ceilings and walls panels, the staterooms are exceptionally sumptuous and ensure all guests on board have an elegant space of their own in which to retreat.

Televisions pop out of the foot of each bed, and leather blackout screens and blinds can be operated using an iPad or iPhone app, while each en suite has a glass basin etched with a floral pattern and a marble shower with a rain shower head.

PARTY GIRL photo 14

On the upper deck aft, a skylounge is divided into intimate sections to suit a number of functions. Seating to port offers guests a place to socialise and enjoy a drink, while a more relaxed sofa area opposite faces a pop-up television, on which guests can watch movies.

Ebony and Canaletto walnut are present once again, and panels of golden goatskin parchment on the forward wall add to the warmth these woods create. Although lacking the glamorous formality of the main salon, the lounge is still sumptuous and appealing, and offers a more laid-back environment in which to relax or entertain.

Glass doors open out onto the upper deck aft where a circular table for 12 provides Party Girl’s main alfresco dining option. Fixed seating runs along the aft-most section and, all in all, the space is perfect for hosting guests, whether it be for casual luncheons, dinner parties or drinks and canapes.

PARTY GIRL photo 15

Boasting only minimal furniture, the main aft deck is designed for accommodating a larger group of guests in a party setting, whereas opportunities for relaxation and sunning abound on the bridge deck aft and sundeck.

A spa pool and surrounding sunpads on the bridge deck aft are exposed to the sun, while chaise loungers and deck chairs sit in the shade of the sundeck above, adjoined by the Captain and Chief Officer's quarters that spread across the remainder of the deck forward.

By far the most impressive exterior area aboard superyacht Party Girl, however, is her chic beach club.

PARTY GIRL photo 19

The beach club can be reached by either descending the exterior stairs to port and starboard on the main deck aft or via a central corridor on the lower deck. The latter is a very rare feature for a superyacht and means those sleeping in the lower deck guest cabins can access the water-side lounge in a matter of seconds.

The seating area is formed of two blue sofas facing a central coffee table, and teak decks and pale brushed natural teak wall panelling create a beachy atmosphere. A dayhead is located to starboard, while gym equipment takes up the port-side section.

After working out or soaking up the sun, guests can take a refreshing dip in the sea or access the huge range of water toys, which include WaveRunners, Seabobs, stand-up paddle boards, wakeboards, water skis and a range of inflatable toys.

PARTY GIRL photo 18

Living up to her name, Party Girl is well-primed for entertaining with a long list of different areas designed for socialising, whether it be at intimate family gatherings or formal dinner parties.

Adding to her appeal is her flexible accommodation offer. Able to sleep up to 12 in eight rooms, guests have a choice of cabins, including the two master suites which can transform into one penthouse-style apartment.

What’s more, her Christiano Gatto styled interior effortlessly sets the perfect mood for charterers, from the formal glamour of the main deck to the warm and welcoming master suites, and fresh and tranquil beach club.

No matter what's on the agenda for your next charter vacation , M/Y Party Girl will be able to fulfil your wishes and provide you will a holiday of a lifetime.

winch design and burgess collaborate on project ace, described as "the perfect superyacht"

Winch Design and Burgess unveil 72m superyacht concept Project Ace

British studio Winch Design has collaborated with brokerage firm Burgess on a yacht concept known as Project Ace. Billed as "the perfect superyacht", the 72-metre is the culmination of feedback from yacht owners, crew, and shipyards from across northern Europe, Italy and Turkey. The result is a semi-custom platform with charter and resale appeal and several desirable leisure features, including a private owner's deck, an office that can convert into a nail bar and a 100-square-metre beach club and spa.

BOAT takes a closer look...

What is the perfect size for a superyacht?

72 metres, 1700gt, five decks.

"At a smaller size there are a large number of series or semi-custom build options available, which are dominating the market in that sector. At larger sizes, we find that our clients are often wanting to get more engaged in the development of the whole concept for the project so for this approach this really sat in a nice, sweet spot.

For example, if a client wants a traditional or plumb bow, or the elevator to also serve the lower deck cabins and beach club, this has already been considered and can be included, together with any other client-specific requests and customisation requirements." (Crispin Baynes, partner and sales broker at Burgess).

"72 metres is the perfect size to accommodate the features and square metres requested by the majority of clients. It’s also a manageable tonnage when it comes to regulatory complexity, whereby shipyards can offer a very competitive build time and a great level of customisation at an attractive price – all factors which are important in today’s market." (Jim Dixon, managing partner and creative director at Winch Design).

How has Winch Design's "signature yachts" influenced Project Ace's look?

"Both the exterior and interior design of Winch yachts have always been characterised by a 'signature', making them unique and instantly recognisable. Project Ace is no different. The design is pure, balanced, beautifully proportioned, and carries a 'blade' signature along her long aft superstructure lines, which enables an individualised exterior with different material and colour options. We hope this will appeal to not one, but a succession of multiple owners." (Jim Dixon, managing partner and creative director at Winch Design).

How many shipyards did you go to with this concept? How did their feedback inform the design?

"We discussed the design with a number of shipyards ranging from northern European, Italian and Turkish yards. In general, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Firstly, the design and technical platform proposed are feasible and in-line with their own design philosophies and secondly, the project aligns well with the requests and discussions that they are having with their own clients at the moment.

A couple of shipyards felt that a slightly larger version of the same design may suit their client base and Winch Design have been working on that. Watch this space." (Ed Beckett, senior partner and naval architect at Burgess)

What was the level of crew input given? How did their feedback inform the design?

"[Project Ace] was developed hand in glove with the Burgess Management team which is filled with ex-yacht crew, from captains and deck officers to engineers and interior crew. We drove the mantra hard that a yacht with a good operational setup will deliver a better experience for the guests on board.

Things which can easily be overlooked in favour of few additional square metres of guest interior have been driven into this project – appropriate crew numbers, flow of crew and provisions around the yacht, storage - and not just one large deck store but good functional storage distributed around the yacht. This is an absolutely fundamental part of creating a successful yacht." (Lucy Medd, partner head of crew services at Burgess).

Who else did you speak to?

"We sent the design to a number of our trusted clients who have experience chartering, owning and building their own yachts, or multiple yachts, with careful commercial considerations in their own designs.

Tips we garnered, that you only know from active yachting, ranged from window heights for seated views, to smart floor lighting at night, design-led accessibility options, guest pantries, hidden kids’ activity tables, a ship’s office that can convert to an occasional nail bar, flower fridges, beer taps, sauna and cold plunges, and bigger galleys for chef’s table or ‘kitchen party’ options. Which we baked back into the current go-to-market design package for Project Ace." (Crispin Baynes, partner and sales broker at Burgess).

How have you maximised Project Ace’s charter appeal?

"The layout of Project Ace places attention on the principal guest by offering a forward-facing master suite with 180 degree, floor-to-ceiling panoramic views. The "best in class" 100-square-metre waterside beach club and spa is also at the heart of any great charter experience, as is the 5.2-metre deck pool above. In fact, the entire aft area of the yacht is dedicated to relaxation, socialising and casual wellbeing. Another important feature is the central elevator which connects to main deck to the sundeck, allowing guests of all ages to connect easily from their cabins." (Jim Dixon, managing partner and creative director at Winch Design).

"Project Ace is also in a 'sweet spot', able to achieve a high volume of charters whilst also securing a very attractive charter rate versus annual running cost." (Ben Harwood, senior partner and head of charter at Burgess).

How have you maximised Project Ace’s resale value?

"The project has a fantastic design edge without being radical or too polarising in opinion and the features and functionality are top drawer for a project of this size. We have taken care to ensure that Project Ace has global appeal and that the design and layout isn’t skewed particularly towards one market.

Project Ace is not just a design that looks good – it comes with a huge amount of unique industry IP so it will work well too. This yacht is one that will be thoroughly enjoyed by the guests and the crew alike." (Ed Beckett, senior partner and naval architect at Burgess)
