The 15 Best Lil Yachty Songs

Best Lil Yachty Songs Mobile Images ONE37pm.com

Let's talk about the best Lil Yachty songs - from his early days with "One Night" to his most recent unreleased leaks. The Atlanta rapper has come such a long way since his debut on SoundCloud and subsequent signing to Quality Control. In no particular order, here's our list of the 15 best Lil Yachty songs.

15. "Plastic" - Lil Yachty (feat. Icewear Vezzo and Rio Da Yung OG) (2021)

Best Lil Yachty Songs 3

What better way to start this list off than Lil Yachty's iconic Michigan Boy Boat album from 2021? This banger features the likes of Icewear Vezzo and Rio Da Yung OG, who matched Yachty's energy perfectly. Talk about a Michigan masterpiece: "Plastic" shows off the best elements of the hip-hop sub-genre.

14. "Who Want The Smoke?" - Lil Yachty (feat. Cardi B and Offset) (2018)

Best Lil Yachty Songs 8

Who can forget the first time they heard "Who Want The Smoke?" with Lil Yachty, Offset, and Cardi B all together on a single song. The energy was absolutely electric, and it's no coincidence why all three of them have continued to thrive in their respective careers to this day.

13. "Split/Whole Time" - Lil Yachty (2020)

Best Lil Yachty Songs 9

This is arguably one of the hardest Yachty songs ever, I will vouch for that on anything. From the intro to the very last moment of this song, there's something very special about this one. It's so characteristic of Yachty, so it's no surprise why it's become such a popular song.

12. "Minnesota" - Lil Yachty (feat. Quavo, Young Thug, and Skippa Da Flippa) (2016)

Best Lil Yachty Songs 1

Off his debut album, "Minnesota" is an absolute classic Lil Boat banger. The song shows off all of the best sides of Yachty around the time of his breakout into the music scene. Ahh, the good ol' days of SoundCloud.

11. "Solid" - Lil Yachty (feat. SoFaygo) (2021)

Best Lil Yachty Songs 2

The beat of this song makes you want to tilt your head back and ascend into the sky. From Yachty's cunning bars to SoFaygo's unmatched vocal approach, they bodied this beat perfectly, and showed exactly how fire a collab between the two of them is.

10. "T.D." - Lil Yachty (feat. Tierra Whack, A$AP Rocky, and Tyler, the Creator) (2020)

Let's not forget Yachty's song with this legendary cast of characters, which sampled the "Tokyo Drift" production, and became a modern classic. Every artist on this song has a reputation for being creative, and they didn't disappoint with this one.

9. "Demon Time" - Lil Yachty (feat. Draft Day) (2020)

Yachty has a knack for putting listeners on to the best underground artists, and that's exactly what he did here with Draft Day. If you're a seasoned Yachty listener, then this feature should've came at no surprise to you.

8. "Get Dripped" - Lil Yachty (feat. Playboi Carti) (2018)

Here's yet another one of the best Lil Yachty songs. Off of Yachty's Nuthin' to Prove album, "Get Dripped" gave fans a rare glance at just how special Yachty and Carti collabs are. The two artists morph their unique Atlanta-based styles together, and create music that literally nobody else in rap could replicate.

7. "66" - Lil Yachty (feat. Trippie Redd) (2018)

Best Lil Yachty Songs 7

As far as timeless Lil Yachty classics go, this song is one of the top options. Trippie Redd and Lil Yachty both bring an unconventional style to the table, so of course the result of their collaboration is exactly that: unconventional.

6. G.I. Joe - Lil Yachty (feat. Louie Ray) (2021)

Another song from Yachty's Michigan Boy Boat album, "G.I. Joe" was yet another standout. It's great to see the chemistry Yachty has with all of the many features from this project, but there's something especially unique about the energy shared between Boat and Louie Ray.

5. "All of the Opps Is Opp'd" - Lil Yachty (Unreleased)

Best Lil Yachty Songs 10

While not everyone is probably hip to this song, everybody should be. This Cash Cobain-produced banger samples Roy Ayers' "Everybody Loves the Sunshine," and turned it into a contemporary drill classic. Thank us later.

4. "Dynamic Duo" - Lil Yachty (feat. Tee Grizzley) (2021)

The name of the song is no lie: Lil Yachty and Tee Grizzley really are a "Dynamic Duo," but you should've known that already, after their prior collabs. To Lil Boat diehards, this was no surprise. On a stacked project, somehow this song managed to be one of the standouts.

3. "Poland" - Lil Yachty (2022)

Best Lil Yachty Songs 6

Talk about "best Lil Yachty songs." It's impossible to forget the iconic moment Yachty had with the leak of this song. "I took the woOoOoOoOok... to Poland" will never get old, at least to the younger generation. The memes that were generated from this wave will surely never age, that's for sure.

2. "DipSet" - Lil Yachty and Offset (2016)

Best Lil Yachty Songs 5

Lil Yachty and Offset have connected numerous times on collaborations, yet for some reason, this one never ceases to smack. If you haven't heard it already, here's your chance. Feast your ears upon yet another classic.

1. "Coffin" - Lil Yachty (2020)

Best Lil Yachty Songs 4

One of the most memorable Lil Yachty releases ever was his 2020 single, "Coffin." From the moment the video teaser dropped, the hype was there. This felt like the start of a new era of Lil Yachty, embracing the most modern landscape of music, as he's always done in true Yachty fashion.

How Lil Yachty Got His Second Act

By Jeff Ihaza

Until the pandemic, Lil Yachty never stopped to think about how quickly he became famous. “It was a full year from walking across the stage in high school to then I’m in this penthouse in midtown Atlanta , I got this G-wagon, put my mother in a house,” Yachty explains. “It’s a fast life. You not ever getting the chance to think about a lot of shit.”

Yachty’s 2016 hit “Minnesota,” which had the treacly energy of a nursery rhyme, earned the then-17-year-old the title “King of the Teens.” But since then, he’s become an elder statesman of a certain brand of young superstar — and something like the Gen Z answer to Diddy. He collaborated with brands like Nautica and Target; he appeared in the movie How High 2 ; he signed an endorsement deal with Sprite. Signees to his new label imprint, Concrete Boys, even get an iced-out chain.

Born Miles Parks McCollum, Yachty embodies many of the ways the music industry has changed in the past decade. He rose to fame on the internet and commands attention with or without new music. Over Zoom in March, he’s calm and reserved, pausing intently before he responds to questions. The youthful exuberance is still there, though. At one point, his mom, who lives nearby, calls to ask what he wants from the grocery store. “I need Pop-Tarts,” he says sweetly. “I really want them cinnamon-bun Pop-Tarts.”

He can afford lots of Pop-Tarts. Yachty reportedly made $13 million on endorsements in 2016 and 2017. (“Work hard, play hard,” he responds when asked about the number.) He spends more than $50,000 a month on various expenses, according to one recent headline. (“If anything I pay a little more. I have many assets and insurance, plus an elaborate payroll.”) He’s working on a Reese’s Puffs cereal collaboration, a film based on the card game Uno, and he was one of the first rappers to hop on the crypto craze, selling something called a “YachtyCoin” last December in an auction on the platform Nifty Gateway. According to a report from Coinbase, the token sold for $16,050. Yachty explains that when he was first discovered by Quality Control records founder Kevin “Coach K” Lee, “one of the biggest things he talked about was being a brand. Being bigger than just an artist — being a mogul.”

In fact, collaboration has come to be a useful tool for Yachty as he sheds the King of the Teens title for something more akin to a rap mogul. “I only work with people I have friendships with, who I really admire,” Yachty says. “And I love working with newer artists, up-and-coming artists.”  Within the world of hip-hop, Yachty has found for himself somewhere between a megastar and internet hero, and it would appear that he’s just settling in. “I just fuck with new talent. Not even like, ‘let me sign you, get under my wing,’ ” he explains. “Just ‘hey, I’ve been in this spot before. I know what that’s like, bada bing, bada boom.’ ”

Yachty started Concrete Boys last year. One of the first signees was his childhood friend Draft Day, who offers one of the more exciting features on Lil Boat 3, on the cut “Demon Time.” “I feel old sometimes,” Yachty admits. “I feel old as fuck when someone’s popping and I don’t know who they are. Which is rare, because I be on my shit.”

Yachty is also at the forefront of a new realm of social platforms, namely Twitch and Discord, that engender more direct communication within communities. Yachty frequently talks directly to fans on both platforms, and in April he collaborated with Discord on “sound packs,” which allowed users to replace the app’s normal notifications with sounds he created.

Real sex-symbol shit, you know what I’m saying?” For Yachty, who opened the door to a new brand of celebrity rapper, it doesn’t register as wishful thinking. His enduring celebrity is proof of what’s possible with a solid flow and internet savvy. “I just want to do everything. Because I’ve realized I can,” Yachty explains. “I’ve learned the power I have. The only thing stopping me is me, for real.”

Lil Yachty Breaks Boundaries and Takes on Rap Conservatism

A conversation about the hip-hop eccentric’s experiments, and the benefits (and perils) of collaborating outside an artist’s established genre..

Over eight full-length releases since 2016, the Atlanta rap eccentric Lil Yachty has carved out several micro niches — he’s been a novelty rap auteur, a sing-rap warbler, a student and emulator of punchline-heavy Michigan rap.

But his latest album, “Let’s Start Here.,” is stirring debate about how Lil Yachty is testing hip-hop boundaries, and why he feels compelled to test them at all. It’s an exploration of psychedelic rock with pop edges that finds Lil Yachty collaborating with indie-rock writers and producers, which is a sonic, if not dispositional, departure.

On the new Popcast, a conversation about how young rappers often find themselves at odds with their elders, how Lil Yachty has leveraged casualness as he’s experimented with styles, and how collaborating outside the genre you made your name in can be fraught both musically and critically.

Lil Yachty

Lil Yachty ‘s latest album, “Let’s Start Here,” did just that: It gave the rapper’s career a new starting point by setting aside his hip-hop origins and rebooting into psychedelic rock. Yachty 2.0 stopped by Central Park’s SummerStage and showed off his new sound, while also giving original fans a healthy dose of his classic bangers.

Popular on variety.

The new chapter of Yachty had begun with this surreal, spacey production, and fans flooded into New York’s Central Park on Friday night to see it for themselves. Yachty’s band and singers appeared on stage first, all dressed in white, while trippy, dream-like visuals projected onto a huge screen behind them. The funky tunes of “drive ME crazy!” opened the show, with Yachty gliding in singing the soft vocals of “the ride” and “pRETTy.”

The typical 808s and bass of a normal rap concert wouldn’t be heard for a few more songs, as the band played an electric guitar-assisted rendition of Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight” before Yachty transitioned into the hip-hop portion of the night. It was as if the concert was divided into Act I and II, and finally the old Yachty came out to play some of his bangers. After the indie rock start, fans opened up the crowd to mosh along with “Yacht Club,” “Flex Up” and “Coffin.” Strobe lights and lasers illuminated the stage as Yachty jumped around screaming his lyrics as his braids and beads danced wildly in the air.

After the release of “Let’s Start Here,” Yachty got a shoutout from Questlove for “pushing the envelope” and being an example of “music’s future,” beyond just the rap genre. Whatever may come next, (he’s supposedly developing an action movie based on Uno — yes, the card game ) fans will want to keep an eye on where Yachty sails to next.

The Rebirth of Boat

Between his high-profile bro-ship with Drake and a decidedly non-rap album in ‘Let’s Start Here.,’ Lil Yachty may have been the most talked-about hip-hop artist of 2023. The question is: What comes next?

It’s easy now to forget how we thought of Tyler, the Creator before 2017, but it’s worth recounting. As the leader of the Odd Future clique, he was considered something of a juvenile prankster, more known for his (admittedly offensive) provocations than his (admittedly many) talents. Taken at face value, he was a jester in a Supreme cap, Bart Simpson trading his slingshot for a cracked copy of Fruity Loops.

That changed, however, with the release of Tyler’s fourth album, Flower Boy . It was a revelation: candid, confessional, mature—all without losing its sense of adventurousness. Flower Boy was daring and at times gorgeous. Maybe that version of Tyler was lurking inside all along, but it came as somewhat of a shock to the larger listening public. (Including us here at The Ringer , who called the album “radiant” and said it seemed to be made with “more purpose” than anything he had tried previously.)

Tyler’s journey to Flower Boy feels relevant when discussing the most important figure in rap music of this year: Lil Yachty. Once dismissed as a “mumble rapper” or a red-braided featherweight, the rapper born Miles McCollum has undergone something of a transformation the past 12 months. The one-time King of Teens is grown now, and at 26 years old, he finds himself at a crossroads similar to the one where Tyler was at that age.

Yachty’s metamorphosis has included several facets, from becoming something of a spiritual North Star for Drake to going viral with the most addictive song of his career, “Poland.” But when we talk about the renewed sense of artistry Yachty found in 2023, it begins with one thing: Let’s Start Here. , his LP from January, which does away with the “bubblegum trap” of earlier in his career and embraces vibey guitar music. It’s possibly the best album of his career—and almost certainly the biggest pivot any mainstream artist has made in the past few years. But more importantly, it’s a statement of intent that was, like Flower Boy , made with more purpose than anything he had previously attempted. “Fuck any of the albums I dropped before this one. … I wanted to show people a different side of me—and that I can do anything,” the two-time Grammy-nominated artist told Billboard last spring.

The Best of 2023

alt description

As the end of the year approaches, The Ringer is celebrating the best in movies, TV, music, and more. Follow along with all our coverage here .

The Best Movies of 2023 The Best TV Shows of 2023 The Best Albums of 2023 The Best Video Games of 2023 The Best Shots of 2023

Let’s Start Here. is the multiplatinum-selling artist’s fifth studio album and first official full-length in three years . From the outside looking in, it seemed like Yachty was at peace with doing more of the same musically (save for “Poland”; more on that in a minute) and that his influence had plateaued. He had obviously branched out and stacked up wins in other areas—his 2021 mixtape Michigan Boy Boat is a cult favorite—but when it came to his own music, the progression felt stagnant.

LSH , which is heavily inspired by Pink Floyd–esque psychedelic rock, replaces Yachty’s sticky refrains, trap production, and tongue-in-cheek rhymes with reverberating vocals, drawn-out live instrumentation, and very little wordplay. It’s also important to mention that he had a hand in producing 12 of the 14 tracks . Many of Yachty’s past projects have been predominantly feature-heavy, enlisting high-profile names ranging from Future to Vince Staples, but LSH is noticeably stripped back. The album has a seven -minute intro whose back half is completely devoid of lyrics. This is planets away from the repetitive earworms of his early career like “Minnesota” and “Peek A Boo.” That said, he doesn’t totally leave his trademark intoxicating melodies behind on LSH . “sAy sOMETHINg” and “paint THE sky,” a pair of back-to-back highlights, show what’s possible when he finds the right balance between his distinctly stretchy, auto-tuned riffs and the multilayered, slowed instrumentals.

Conversely, “drive ME crazy!” exemplifies one of the many moments when Yachty takes the back seat and lets his supporting cast take center stage. The love song opens with a groovy bass line and Diana Gordon’s voice gliding over a bed of high-pitched strings. Yachty matches her energy with his own crooning before his verse is hijacked by a kaleidoscope of synths that drown him out. He returns on the back end, closing out the song with a rare bit of rapping over a laid-back, snare drum–laced beat. It’s some of his most thoughtful work to date.

LSH is by no means a perfect album, and Yachty’s shortcomings are exposed on tracks where it sounds like he’s wearing his influences a little too much on his sleeve. Upon multiple spins, both “running out of time” and “THE zone~” feel closer to Tame Impala cosplay than anything groundbreaking.

Yachty’s always been known for being versatile and chameleonic, but not to the degree of making full-on, drug-inspired rock music, so to describe this as a creative risk is quite apt. However, the calculated gambit ended up marking a series of career bests for Yachty. LSH debuted at no. 1 on three separate Billboard charts , became his highest-rated album on Metacritic , and earned endorsements from sources as varied as Questlove and Anthony Fantano . But while a lot has been written about LSH and Yachty’s intentional move away from raps, the heat check that came next is equally as interesting.

Starting in April with “ Strike (Holster) ,” Yachty converted tracks from an already recorded rap album into a handful of singles he released over the next five months. The songs in question—“ Slide ,” “ Solo Steppin Crete Boy ,” “ Tesla ,” and “ The Secret Recipe. ”—range from a freestyle with online superstar Kai Cenat to going bar for bar with one of hip-hop’s finest, J. Cole. These weren’t just a few loosies he was trying to pump out before his next album, either; each song had a corresponding music video to match and felt aesthetically different from the last.

More importantly, the songs felt fresh, and his writing felt much more polished than in many of his earlier rap efforts (the less we talk about “COUNT ME IN,” the better). The decision to return to his roots in between non-rap projects is smart for a few reasons. It holds over his day-one fans by playing the hits, it sustains the buzz he generated from LSH without oversaturating the market, and it gives him a chance to move the needle on the long-standing narrative that he isn’t a “serious” rapper (a notion that’s plagued his career). There will always be those who question Yachty’s lyrical ability, but if nothing else, these drops showcase a noticeably refined pen game without losing his special knack for generating legitimate bangers .

This is a sharp shift from a few years back, when Yachty was (wrongly) seen as more of a mushed-mouth interloper than a capital-A Artist. His rapid rise was met with harsh backlash almost immediately due to some combination of Yachty’s perceived allergy to lyricism in his music and an indifference to rap’s history and the legends who came before him. After Yachty revealed that he didn’t take the storied art form seriously during a Hot 97 interview , the floodgates opened and many of the genre’s veteran gatekeepers (the old heads ) stepped up to take their shots. Funkmaster Flex took to the airwaves to disparage Yachty’s lack of bars, Ebro Darden, who conducted said interview, went back and forth with him online, and Joe Budden said point-blank that he isn’t hip-hop.

Fast-forward to November of this year and Yachty is still ruffling the feathers of rap traditionalists , but this time—in an ironic turn of events—from the other side of the aisle. “The place that hip-hop is in right now is a terrible place … it’s a lot of imitation. It’s a lot of quick, low-quality music being put out. It’s trendy. It’s a lot less risk-taking. It’s a lot less originality,” he said at a Rolling Stone event .

How did Yachty—the same artist who was once maligned for “ruining the culture”—reach a point where he feels empowered enough to act as a spokesperson and critique the very same genre that tried to reject him?

Well, having influence over the biggest artist rap has ever seen certainly bolsters his credibility on the subject.

“This lil Drizzy reppin’ Crete.”

Those are the opening words on “Another Late Night,” a memorable cut from one of the most popular albums of the year, Drake’s For All the Dogs . On the surface, the lyric is a simple hat tip from the Canadian megastar to Lil Yachty (and his blossoming label Concrete Boyz ), who spits the song’s infamous second verse and is credited as a coproducer. But after you dig deeper and reflect on the past 12 months for Yachty, that line—and, by extension, the song—serves as a fitting microcosm of his 2023 run, which is inextricably linked to a fruitful friendship turned partnership with Drake.

lil drizzy reppin crete pic.twitter.com/WstTwnDjbb — CONCRETE BOY BOAT^ (@lilyachty) October 25, 2023

Rewind the clock back to the end of 2022, and two important developments occur: the accidental virality of hit single “Poland” and the start of that Drake alliance. Last October, a snippet of a new Lil Yachty song leaked online and rapidly took over TikTok , so much so that he was all but forced to drop it. Yachty even admitted that he recorded it as a joke and never planned to have it come out. Just days later, “Poland” became his only solo release of that year. The song’s catchy hook and extraterrestrial beat set the internet ablaze almost immediately upon its streaming arrival. “Poland” is now up to more than 130 million streams on Spotify ( The Ringer ’s parent company) and over 30 million views on its accompanying Lyrical Lemonade music video . Not bad for an accident.

Not even a month removed from the “Poland” takeover, Yachty showed up all over Drake and 21 Savage’s surprise collab album, Her Loss . He appeared not as a featured act but instead as an executive producer of sorts, receiving coproduction credits on a fourth of the tracklist. He also supplied a handful of ad-libs on “BackOutsideBoyz” and “Jumbotron Shit Poppin” and even claimed to have chosen the project’s cover art as well. (At least he didn’t go with an AI image, like he did for nightmare fuel on Let’s Start Here .)

Yachty’s involvement on the album felt like a test run from Drake to see if their budding bromance could evolve into a prosperous musical union as well as prove that their past chemistry on “Oprah’s Bank Account” wasn’t a fluke. And boy, did Yachty pass with flying colors. Their collaboration on Her Loss launched a close working relationship between the two, as evidenced by his influence pouring over onto For All the Dogs .

The Concrete Boyz CEO and October’s Very Own boss linked back up for seconds on Drake’s eighth studio album. Yachty’s fingerprints are all over the project, with five coproduction credits as well as his verse on “Another Late Night,” which is the first time he’s been listed as an official feature on one of Drizzy’s songs. And this doesn’t even include two more coproduction nods on Drake’s Scary Hours 3 , a six-pack EP doubling as a FATD deluxe edition. Dating back to last November, that brings the total number of Yachty-produced Drake songs up to 12. Simply put, Her Loss and FATD don’t exist without Lil Yachty. The frequent collaborators have formed an inseparable bond over the past year-plus, which has simultaneously impacted the 6 God’s output and elevated Yachty’s commercial ceiling.

Yachty is no stranger to stardom, having featured on a couple of top-five Billboard Hot 100 hits (“Broccoli” and “iSpy”), being named to the now-iconic 2016 XXL Freshman Class , modeling for Yeezy Season 3 , and racking up millions of streams, all before he was legally old enough to drink. Additionally, he had cemented his status among rap fans and critics alike as a SoundCloud favorite born out of the so-called “mumble rap” era. His influence can be seen in the likes of Juice WRLD , Trippie Redd , Lil Tecca , and Yeat —all artists who shaped the past half decade of rap music in their own right.

Still, there’s nothing quite like the Drake stimulus package. According to Hip Hop by the Numbers , Yachty’s appearance on FATD subsequently boosted his monthly listeners on Spotify by a whopping 40 percent .

Over the years, Drake’s become notorious for attaching himself to the coattails of various artists—adopting the Weeknd’s moody aesthetics, Playboi Carti’s flow, Bad Bunny’s language, Skepta’s U.K. slang, the list goes on—as they just so happen to be peaking in their respective lanes. He’s pretty much got it down to a science at this point: He’ll seek out the hottest sound, find an artist who’s spearheading it, and pair up with them so it doesn’t come off like he’s fully biting their style. In Yachty’s case, it doesn’t hurt that he and Drake seem to be genuine BFFs outside the booth, but it’s also an endorsement of his musical worldview. Drake said it best on “ Wick Man ”: “Boat say he the recipe, I must be the key ingredient.”

Now it’s up to Yachty to use that recipe for himself. His past year hasn’t been without its blemishes— awkwardly minimizing rapper Sexxy Red’s trauma on his podcast, singling out a Pitchfork critic for simply doing his job, calling internet trolls “gay,” and getting sued by the SEC among them—but Yachty is operating on a different plane now. He’s got more visibility, and it’s reasonable to expect that he’ll be more in demand as a producer. (His work with City Girls on “Act Up” shows that he’s more than just a Drake-hit wonder.) The Aubrey cosign has a mixed track record on helping the artist he’s borrowing from—ask Earl Sweatshirt his opinions on that—but given Yachty’s history and stature, he’s more likely to end up a Lil Baby than a BlocBoy JB. And he seems intent on making sure of it—as he told Variety , he’s already planning another non-rap LP for the new year, which could explore sounds beyond what he experimented with on Let’s Start Here .

It’s similar to the situation Tyler, the Creator found himself in coming out of 2017. Tyler could’ve easily rested on his laurels after Flower Boy , but instead he doubled down. (His fifth full-length, IGOR , was an even bolder artistic risk than Flower Boy and won him a Grammy; it’s a perfect album.) He’d later return to a more conventional approach with his 2021 Gangsta Grillz homage, Call Me If You Get Lost , but he did so from a position of power: having changed the trajectory of his career and earned the respect of even his most vehement doubters. Yachty took note: “He’s [Tyler, the Creator] the reason I made this album. He’s the one who told me to do it, just go for it. He’s so confident and I have so much respect for him because he takes me seriously, and he always has,” he said in March .

If the past 12 months have done anything for Yachty, they’ve made it clear we should take him as seriously as Tyler takes him—and he takes himself. But if he’s learned anything from Tyler, 2023 simply could be a launchpad into yet another transformation. Yachty titled his big pivot Let’s Start Here. because to him, it’s just the beginning of something. What happens next is arguably more interesting, even if the ending remains a question mark.

Karrahbooo Fires Back at Lil Yachty After Rapper Says He Wrote All Her Songs

“Stop da cap and leave me out ur internet shenanigans.”

Karrahbooo says Lil Yachty is lying when he said he wrote all of her songs.

The rapper, and former member of Lil Yachty’s Concrete Boys group, posted on her Instagram story with a screenshot of three of her songs’ amount of streams. With text featured on top of the screenshot, she addressed Lil Yachty directly to dispute his claims. “Put it on yo kid I ain’t write these songs miles -___-,” she wrote. “Stop da cap and leave me out ur internet shenanigans.”

She then further expressed her wish for Lil Yachty to leave her alone, claiming that she didn’t suggest to a fan that the group had been bullying her. “Stop bullying me big dawg I never said anything you letting random fans get in yo head man up,” she continued.

Her response comes days after Lil Yachty went on an explosive rant about Karrahbooo and her reason for leaving his group.

“Don’t get on here and make a scene ‘bout n****s kicked you out,” he said.

Lil Yachty continued on, expressing that he was responsible for her success by penning her bars. "I wrote every fucking verse you've done.”

He continued on, expressing his frustration at being accused of bullying her.

“You was waiting tables... What are we talking about n***a? I changed your mother fucking life and you are here lying, talking about some: 'We bully you'... That shit got me fucked up, bro,” he said. “You got me fucked up, bro. You disrespectful, bro. You talk to people crazy. You tell people that they are nothing. You tell people you're going to spit on them. You tell people they poor and you talk to my fucking label crazy.”

Back in July, Lil Yachty admitted to fans that Karrahbooo was no longer a part of Concrete Boys after they’d begun to notice that she wasn’t a part of recent group performances.

“We have split ways with Karrah as far as this Concrete shit,” he revealed on Instagram Live at the time. “I have nothing to say—nothing bad to say, nothing negative to say about Karrah. I wish her the best in her career."

Small town gay america, satirical tweets (or are they) and lil yachty's return.

By Forrest Holt

For Your Consideration

PODCAST | The social media editor for the Sun Herald newspaper in Biloxi, Mississippi, hosts OUT HERE IN AMERICA , a podcast about being queer in small, rural towns in the Deep South. Justin Mitchell gained both fame and infamy in the state last year after publishing a column — titled "I'm young, I'm gay and in Mississippi I'll stay" — to protest the Mississippi Legislature's anti-same-sex-marriage House Bill 1523. Beginning the show with a warm "Hey y'all," Mitchell uses specifically local, individual stories, like one from a Pulse nightclub shooting survivor in episode one, to bring into focus the challenges that LGBTQ people face in a world where the ink is still drying on their legal protections.

For Your Consideration

ALBUM | As one of the most criticized rappers currently on the scene, Lil Yachty is not even remotely fazed. The 19-year-old artist's debut album TEENAGE EMOTIONS was released on May 26 and has reached No. 5 on the Billboard charts. He has successfully broken the mold of a one-hit wonder, establishing himself as a pillar of the Atlanta trap wave scene. The album mishmashes slow-paced, optimistic, almost tropical songs like "Better" with aggressive, more traditional trap bangers like "Peek a Boo." Whether Lil Yachty is redefining the boundaries of hip-hop or is merely the pioneer of a quickly fading fad, his album is worth a listen.

For Your Consideration

TWITTER | Not surprisingly, social media has entered the First Amendment arena with President Trump in office. Some challenge the constitutionality of elected officials — like the President — blocking them, while others claim that Twitter activity by politicians should be a matter of public record. @RealPressSecBot capitalizes on both issues in Twitter's foggy constitutional realm, automatically posting Trump's tweets as official releases issued by the Office of the Press Secretary. Seeing Trumpian tweets like "Ivanka on FOX & Friends now!" and "Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication... and WOW, Comey is a leaker!" treated equally as official communication is funny, but it also provokes questions about social media's role in this highly charged political era. ♦

Lil Yachty & Karrahbooo Trade More Shots As Concrete Boys Drama Continues

Lil Yachty & Karrahbooo Trade More Shots As Concrete Boys Drama Continues

Lil Yachty and Karrahbooo are continuing to go back and forth in a feud that has seemingly been brewing for some time.

After Karrah recently departed his Concrete Boys collective, Yachty went on a rant about his former assistant turned artist late last week, accusing her of being “verbally abusive” toward his bodyguard and alleging he wrote all of her raps.

She then clapped back and denied that her songs were written by Yachty and told him to stop bullying her.

Now in their newest exchange, Karrah is asking to be left alone and accuses Yachty of coming at her for no reason.

“I’ll never forget this feeling, this chapter of my life. i’ll never be the same, I’ll never forget who wasn’t there for me,” she said on her Instagram Story. “I done chomped people out/spent my last/slapped folks 4 n-ggas, I ride every time naturally but that’s just how I am. Nobody owe me shit tbh im just taking a mental note.”

She continued: “I can’t even look at most people da same way, to know the truth and watch a grown man with 12 million followers overly lie on my name and publicly bully me for literally no reason at all while I silently been conquering all da shit n-ggas been throwing at me this whole time behind closed doors. I’ll never ignore the signs again and I will never stop no matter how much they hate me.”

In response, Yachty to his own Instagram Story and simply wrote: “Don’t throw rocks and hide your hand.”

This prompted another reply from Karrahbooo.

“I never threw rocks and u have my number u big grown b^itch leave me alone literally @lilyachty. I never said nothing about shit and I still ain’t said nothing bout what’s really going on. I don’t want no beef with you industry people. Just move on wit ur life. Stop tryna bring me down when I stay out the way I’m done talking u got it yo character gone speak for itself.”

Lil Yachty’s initial outburst was seemingly sparked by a social media post claiming that Karrahbooo had been bullied out of the Concrete Boys.

A restaurant employee claimed on X to have been told by Karrah herself that she had been “kicked out” of the collective and that the group members were “bullying her a lot.”

Karrahbooo later made a vague reference to the drama on her own X account, quote tweeting her own post which said: “ion say too much cuz I know shit gone unfold on its own,” with the comment: “this aged well.”

Lil Yachty Crashes Out On Karrahbooo & Mitch In Explosive IG Live Rant: Unpacking The Beef

Lil Yachty Visits Somewhere Nowhere NYC

Lil Yachty ’s Concrete Boys crew might not be as solid as he thought. That's especially the case after the rapper hopped on Instagram Live on Thursday night to air out his associates and signees. Despite pledging to stay off the internet for the remainder of the year, Yachty is still keeping tabs on social media narratives, whether or not they are true.

In the late hours of Thursday night, Lil Yachty went on a full-blown rant on Instagram Live where he aired out Karrahbooo for alleged comments she made about her split from Concrete Boys to a Red Lobster employee. Sounds crazy, right? Unfortunately, it didn’t end there as Yachty shifted his fury toward his best friend and A Safe Space co-host Mitch for not defending him against a random Twitter user claiming that the Atlanta rapper is a bad friend. A lot unravelled over a few hours so here’s everything you need to know about the beef so far.

Karrahbooo’s Departure From Concrete Boys

Before we delve into last night’s shenanigans, it’s important to highlight the beginning of this issue. In late July, fans speculated that Karrahbooo left the crew after fans found that she unfollowed her labelmates. Though it was initially rumors, the “Poland” star confirmed that she was, in fact, not a part of the collective anymore. “I'ma say this sh*t one time," Yachty said on Instagram Live. "We have split ways with Karrah as far as this Concrete sh*t. I have nothing to say. Nothing bad to say, nothing negative to say about Karrah. I wish her the best in her career. That's that. ... I don't have anything really bad to say or anything good to say. We just split, you know?”

Friction On The Timeline

It turns out that Yachty had plenty of negative things to say that were weighing on his chest. He just needed something minor to trigger the emotions that had been bottled up. The issues with Karrahbooo seemingly took a turn for the worse after an alleged Red Lobster employee claimed that Karrah pulled up to the restaurant when she was asked about leaving Concrete.

“Bro she walked in my job (red lobster) to order biscuits and I asked her why she left and she immediately corrected me and said I didn’t leave they kicked me out,” user @C_Staxxz wrote . “Saying they were really mean to her and bullying her a lot.” The user then added her own speculation to the mix, writing, “She seemed really hurt behind ts tbh like they really did her dirty and i believe its because her name was the biggest behind yachty if we being real I only started listening to him again because of her. They’re haters and i told her she’ll do just fine without them. F*ck em.” She also added a photo with Karrahbooo to corroborate that the rapper did pull up to Red Lobster.

Mind you, Karrahbooo herself didn’t mention anything on the Internet, and much of the tweet was primarily speculation. Plus, no one can really verify whether Karrah said these things. Ultimately, there’s clearly tension between the two, and neither particularly wanted to spill into the public eye.

The Mitch Situation Unfolds

Just a day before this tweet regarding Karrah emerged, A Safe Space released a new episode alongside Key Glock who witnessed Yachty violating his co-host , Mitch. In a clip that circulated across X/Twitter, Yachty took credit for Mitch’s success, going as far as claiming his co-host wouldn’t have anything going in life it weren’t for him. Glock kept mum throughout the segment. However, a fan clipped that part of the episode and wrote, “Lil Yachty disrespecting his friend in front of Key Glock.” At the time of writing, the clip gained 9.7M views while a repost of the clip siding with Mitch garnered 901K.

“Mitch. Lil Yachty is not your homie. There’s a time and place to have these conversations. Not on a podcast in front of millions of people to dissect and observe. This is lame as f*ck,” the tweet read. “Don’t do favors for people and then hold it over their head. That’s foul as f*ck.”

Lil Yachty Pulls Receipts On Karrahbooo

Yachty laid it all out during his Instagram Live last night, beginning with Karrahbooo, who he claimed was verbally abusive, entitled, and lacked any rap skills His explosive rant initially denied claims that she was bullied before pivoting over to her catalog of music, which he said he wrote entirely and even provided receipts. “I slowed the beat down, I put 808s specifically on your verse so when it got to your part and the beat dropped, everyone would be like, ‘this girl is the craziest one,” he said in reference to her debut freestyle on On The Radar . He later shared the reference track to back his claim.

“I wrote every f*cking verse you've done… I dressed you. I dressed all five of y'all n***as bro. I dressed five n***as every time we stepped out the house. I put an outfit on everybody. I put eight carats of earrings on everybody ear. I put three chains on all y'all neck,” he continued. “I changed your mother f*cking life and you are here lying, talking about some: 'We bully you'... That shit got me f*cked up, bro. You got me f*cked up, bro. You disrespectful, bro. You talk to people crazy. You tell people that they are nothing. You tell people you're going to spit on them. You tell people they poor and you talk to my f*cking label crazy. You claim I was stealing money.” He also alleged that she put Concrete $900K in the hole and he never recouped on his investment.

Mitch Catches Strays

Quite frankly, this aspect of the entire rant didn’t paint Yachty in the best light. Once again, the powers of social media broke Yachty completely as he bashed Mitch for failing to address random social media users criticizing him. In fact, Yachty’s emotions completely took control of him to the point where he decided to cancel their podcast abruptly. First, he explained that Mitch approached him to do a podcast, which Yachty obliged, in order to help his co-host and friend build a platform.

“I ain't want to do no motherf*cking podcast n***a, I'm a f*cking rapper... I put $400,000 in Mitch pocket,” he said. “I ain’t f*ckin’ with Mitch, bro. I been sleep all day, I wake up to this crazy sh*t. I say, ‘Mitch, how the f*ck you ain’t go on the internet and tell these folks that we playin’, bruh?’” According to Boat, Mitch downplayed the situation, allegedly claiming, “It’s Twitter, bruh. You know how they is.” Yachty then cussed out Mitch for not defending him on the Internet against strangers and subsequently decided to cancel the podcast. “All I do is help people, bruh. I don’t get nothing from none of this sh*t,” Yachty added.

Mitch Clears The Air

In a series of tweets, Mitch finally addressed the narrative surrounding his relationship with Boat. “please don’t let that clip misguide you it doesn’t represent me and yachty’s friendship at all we joke around pretty harsh sometimes too much fr sometimes but irl it’s nothing but respect and love i can’t even get on here and act like it’s not,” he said.

Later, he made it clear that he has always had his own thing going on, even before meeting Lil Yachty. “i ain’t nobody lil bro never been check my history i had stats before i met bro and got even more now, all i ever wanted to do was just focus on the music and being involved in the culture in a positive way i hope none of this hinders that,” he wrote.

Lil Yachty Clashes With Mitch’s Ex/Cousin?

Though it seemed like the dust had settled, a new party entered the chat: Mitch’s supposed ex, Camille. Sharing a voice note to social media, she slammed Yachty for his alleged treatment of Mitch over the years. “Like, I been telllin’ Mitch you’re a bogus ass n***a. I been sayin’ that sh*t ‘cause you are. You are a bogus ass n***a,” she said. Then, she threatened to pull out receipts backing up everything she said.

In response, Yachty quickly tweeted and deleted a voice note refuting her claims . While Camille claimed that Mitch took on a managerial role for Yachty and often had to be in meetings, Yachty said that his co-host had been lying to her the whole time. He went on to say that Mitch only used Camille for a place to stay before revealing that she was, in fact, the cousin that Mitch claimed to have slept with during an episode of A Safe Space podcast. She later fired back on Twitter Spaces.

Rachelle Jean-Louis always knew the power of songwriting. As a preteen growing up in New Jersey, “When I finished my homework, I’d be listening to CDs and trying to unpack the albums,” she recalls. “Seeing who wrote and produced the songs, reading the liner notes and lyrics.” She idolized singer-songwriter Keri Hilson, who in the aughts “was writing really cool R&B songs” with collaborators like Timbaland, Kanye West and Lil Wayne. “I wanted to be a songwriter just like her,” Jean-Louis adds. “Music was everything to me. There was no plan B.” Jean-Louis, now 34, didn’t become a songwriter herself — but she is now the force behind one of today’s fastest-rising songwriting talents, Victoria Monét. When Monét stepped onstage to accept best new artist at the Grammy Awards earlier this year, she brought Jean-Louis, her manager, with her. “There was a binder that I made to take to this really important meeting at a label,” Monét said in her tearful televised speech. “I was an independent artist with no team, and I just thought, ‘Maybe my music would stand for itself.’ But that binder [was] left collecting dust … Rachelle found that binder, and she decided to take a chance, leave that label and be my manager. Thank you so much for seeing me.” “Her pulling me up onstage for best new artist … I honestly didn’t think she was going to do that,” Jean-Louis says. “But I’m really proud of her for everything that she’s accomplished against all odds. It’s a testament not just to her but the whole team.” And it’s for her transformative past year with Monét that Billboard honors Jean-Louis as its 2024 R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players Executive of the Year.

Justin “meezy” williams, co-founders, slaughter gang entertainment.

Following the success of Her Loss, his 2022 joint project with Drake, 21 Savage returned with his first solo album in over six years when he released January’s American Dream . He didn’t lose momentum, scoring his fourth No. 1 on the Billboard 200 by earning 133,000 equivalent album units. Though the album boasted features from R&B heavyweights Summer Walker and Brent Faiyaz, his hard-nosed raps reigned supreme — as proved by the album’s standout track, “Redrum,” peaking at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. “The narrative that our genre is falling off is not true,” says Williams, 21 Savage’s manager and president of their Slaughter Gang Entertainment imprint, which releases his albums through Epic Records. “Hip-hop and R&B albums are doing amazing, and we still are the No. 1 genre.”

Bynum particularly enjoyed the yearlong celebration of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary in 2023, during which UMe rereleased a series of hit albums from across decades — including LL COOL J’s Mama Said Knock You Out , which ranked at No. 5 on the year-end Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart in 1991; Salt-N-Pepa’s Very Necessary from 1993; a deluxe edition of Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III from 2008; and Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded , which topped the Billboard 200 in 2012 — all on exclusive vinyl variants. UMe also partnered with the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority on collectible transit MetroCards that featured East Coast hip-hop legends such as Cam’Ron, LL COOL J, Rakim and Pop Smoke. In the wake of celebrating 50 years of hip-hop, Bynum says she is “optimistic” about where the genre is today.

Warner Records has celebrated recent strides made by 21-year-old Memphis rapper NLE Choppa and actress-singer Andra Day. Choppa secured two top 10 singles on the Rhythmic Airplay chart with “Ain’t Gonna Answer” (featuring Lil Wayne) and “Do It Again,” a collaboration with 2Rare. “We’re also super proud of Andra Day’s new album and her single ‘Probably,’ which is currently top 20 on the Adult R&B Airplay chart,” Corbett-Rice says. Day won a Grammy Award in 2022 for the soundtrack to The United States vs. Billie Holiday , in which she starred, along with an Academy Award nomination for best actress.

biggest issue

“The oversaturation of the market and the sheer volume of music in the genre on [digital service providers] and beyond,” Corbett-Rice says. “Artists release music more frequently, which makes it more challenging for songs and artists to stand out.”

Archie Davis

Executive vp/chief creative officer, naim mcnair, executive vp of a&r, zach shefrin, vp of digital, charlene thomas, vp of marketing, sharon bako, senior director of marketing, def jam recordings.

Def Jam remains a hotbed for R&B artists. Coco Jones earned five nominations for this year’s Grammy Awards, and her hit “ICU” scored a win for best R&B performance. Muni Long, also a Grammy winner, notched another hit with “Made for Me,” which peaked at No. 20 on the Hot 100 and hit No. 1 on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay. Grammy-nominated singer Fridayy completes Def Jam’s trifecta of rising singers, earning his first solo Hot 100 hit this year with “When It Comes to You.” Says Davis: “All three artists have achieved substantial recognition and success in the R&B genre.”

“The T.J. Martell Foundation plays a crucial role in early-stage cancer research. In 2023, we successfully changed the Universal Music Group colonoscopy and prostate screening age from 45 to 29,” Davis says. “Prostate cancer is claiming the lives of men, especially Black men, at alarmingly high rates.”

Julius “J” Erving

Human re sources, executive vp, the orchard, executive vp of creative development, sony music entertainment.

Human Re Sources’ focus on a “hands-on and artist-specific approach,” Erving says, continues to pay dividends with Raye, who made history in March by winning six BRIT Awards, including artist and album of the year (for My 21st Century Blues ). Next up, Erving says rapper Lancey Foux “has been planting major seeds in the United States, building mainstream appeal,” thanks to a recent collaboration with Teezo Touchdown and Cash Cobain, while young singer Lekan — “one of the most amazing voices in music” — is about to head out on tour with Tems.

Biggest issue

“Getting fans to buy into an artist beyond a song by giving artists the room to properly develop. But we are longevity-oriented and not afraid to invest in our artists’ development.”

Executive vp of urban promotion

Interscope capitol labels group.

In his role at the newly formed Interscope Capitol Labels Group, Evans’ recent wins include Ice Spice’s debut at No. 3 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart with Y2K! and helping to propel GloRilla’s “Yeah Glo!” to No. 1 on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay earlier this year. Despite these successes, he’s wary of how today’s social media-driven landscape is pushing artists to release a never-ending stream of music, sometimes moving on to the next song before giving their previous track time to grow. “Artists are pressured to stay relevant and maintain their presence by constantly putting out new music, sometimes to the detriment of the art,” Evans says. “This is taking its toll on the industry as a whole. We need to make sure we balance commercial success and artistic expression.”

“I’m really proud of the Arista community Khris and I have been able to build within the R&B/hip-hop space over the past 18 months,” Freeman says. “The success of Brooklyn rap’s new torchbearer, Lola Brooke, is a true artist development story.” In the wake of her 2023 album, Dennis Daughter , Brooke was nominated as best new artist at the BET Awards and teamed up with rap trio 41 on the track “Becky,” which Billboard named an R&B/Hip-Hop Fresh Pick of the Week in February. Brooke’s success, Freeman says, “made my [Arista Records joint venture] Saint Kash Records possible, along with the signing of Cincinnati phenom Skylar Blatt, who is up next.” Riddick-Tynes, meanwhile, shared the 2024 Grammy for best R&B song as a co-writer of SZA’s hit “Snooze.”

In the past year, Generation Now/Atlantic artist Jack Harlow reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 with “Lovin on Me,” Janelle Monáe earned an album of the year Grammy nomination for The Age of Pleasure and Burna Boy was the top artist on Billboard’s 2023 year-end U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart.

310babii was just 18 years old when his “Soak City (Do It)” debuted on the Hot 100 last November, and it has been all on the upswing for him since then, as the song became a Bay Area anthem and EMPIRE pushed it from TikTok virality to No. 1 on Rhythmic Airplay and Rap Airplay in March. Those No. 1s, “and to be presented a platinum plaque at high school graduation all within one year, speaks volumes to his dedication to music while still maintaining an education,” Etminan says, adding that the rapper’s breakout has been “rewarding to watch.” EMPIRE also scored a big win this year with PJ Morton, the independent self-produced artist with whom the label has been working since 2018. Morton landed his fifth Grammy for best traditional R&B performance for “Good Morning” (featuring Susan Carol).

Gotti’s CMG imprint continues to prosper thanks to its superstar acts GloRilla and MoneyBagg Yo. After enjoying a fruitful 2022, courtesy of her breakout hits “F.N.F. (Let’s Go)” (with Hitkidd) and “Tomorrow 2” (with Cardi B), GloRilla has doled out more Hot 100 anthems with “Yeah Glo!” and “Wanna Be,” the latter a Megan Thee Stallion collaboration that peaked at No. 11 in April. In May, she embarked on an arena outing with Megan for the rapper’s Hot Girl Summer Tour, while MoneyBagg Yo reclaimed his mainstream prowess when he teamed with Morgan Wallen on “Whiskey, Whiskey,” netting a top 25 Hot 100 hit. “It’s a long-term process to develop superstars,” Gotti says. “It requires time, money and patience.”

“The lack of artist development. There’s too much focus on signing artists based on social media analytics and less of a strategic plan to invest into their growth.”

“We’re big believers in everything Ice Spice and her team have been able to accomplish,” Friedman says of the Bronx rapper whose album Y2K! arrived in July on 10K/Capitol Records and debuted at No. 3 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Friedman says the label has also built out its A&R department “to focus heavily on signing and developing regional talent. Artists like YTB Fatt, Chicken P and OT7 Quanny are just a few of the up-and-coming artists we believe have the ability to break nationally.” The company is also “very excited,” he says, about joint ventures it recently struck with labels including GUMBO (Dthang) and Moneybagg Yo’s Loaf Boyz Ventures, which boasts Fatt and Kevo Muney on its roster. Grainge will become the CEO of Atlantic Music Group on Oct. 1.

“Every executive is obsessed with country music,” Friedman says.

Partnering with Top Dawg Entertainment to work on SiR’s HEAVY was “a huge moment” for The Orchard, Grampus says. On top of that, the company recently inked a global distribution deal with New York rapper Fivio Foreign, who has collaborated with Drake, Ye and Playboi Carti. As valuable as these signings are, Grampus says, “There is a misconception that the biggest hip-hop and R&B artists will automatically come from America.” He adds, “Hip-hop and R&B fans exist across the world, and it’s our job to connect them with talent that will resonate by creating sustainable, engaged fan communities.”

“I’m really proud of how the team has delivered for all of our artists,” Bass says. Gunna’s success with consecutive No. 1s on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart has been “incredibly rewarding,” she says. “Hunxho is the hottest new artist in Atlanta; his [mixtape] project For Her was one of the best last year,” Bass adds, also citing Tee Grizzley, whose tracks “IDGAF” (featuring Chris Brown and Mariah the Scientist) and “Swear to God” (featuring Future) reached Nos. 2 and 20, respectively, on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay. The company is also “committed to the development of the next global superstars,” she says. “Jordan Adetunji, representing Belfast, already has a breakout record: ‘Kehlani,’ featuring Kehlani on the official remix.” Lastly, while the drawn-out trial in Atlanta of one of the label’s superstars continues into its second year, Bass says, “One of our biggest celebrations will be when Young Thug is free.”

“In the past year-and-a-half, we’ve had incredible success with both our marquee and emerging artists, seeing big moments coming from both the Alamo and Santa Anna rosters,” Moscowitz says. A veteran music entrepreneur, Moscowitz founded Alamo Records in 2016 after leaving 300 Entertainment, which he had launched in 2012 alongside Lyor Cohen, Roger Gold and Kevin Liles. In 2021, he struck a deal for Sony Music Entertainment to acquire a majority of Alamo. Sony Music Group chairman Rob Stringer described Moscowitz as “a visionary in an area of music that is now front and center of pop culture globally.” In January 2023, SME and Alamo announced the creation of artist and label services company Santa Anna Records as a joint venture between Sony and Moscowitz. Industry veteran L’Heureux, who most recently had been GM at Geffen Records, was recruited to lead Santa Anna as well as take on the newly created role of president of Alamo. “I’ve always admired Todd’s approach to the music industry, as well as his dedication to supporting artists and their distinct, creative visions,” L’Heureux said at the time. “I’m honored for the opportunity and look forward to taking Alamo to the next level and carving out a path for Santa Anna.” In September 2023, Alamo artist Rod Wave achieved his third consecutive No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with Nostalgia . Then, in February, Wave’s Alamo labelmate BossMan Dlow made his Billboard Hot 100 debut with “Get In With Me,” which has since earned 181.6 million official on-demand U.S. streams; he has a career total of 1.1 billion on-demand U.S. streams. In May, PartyNextDoor’s latest release, P4 , enjoyed a top 10 debut on the Billboard 200, an achievement “with our partners OVO Sound,” Moscowitz says, under a deal through which Santa Anna provides additional artist and label services to the Canadian label. As it achieves “early breakout success with artists like wolfacejoeyy and others, the label is really firing on all cylinders,” Moscowitz says. “Our team — including A&R, marketing and digital — has done an outstanding job understanding and forecasting the marketplace and developing dynamic, innovative ways to serve artists and fans.”

Nimene took over the urban promotion department for the newly reconfigured Republic Corps in March and quickly set to work on Muni Long’s “Made for Me,” which her team took to No. 1 on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and No. 2 on Rhythmic Airplay before sending it to pop radio, propelling it to No. 20 on the Hot 100. They also helped support Coco Jones, whose “ICU” peaked at No. 1 on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and won her a Grammy for best R&B performance, while Ayra Starr is on deck for the team. “I am so proud of what we are doing as a company with R&B artists,” she says, because “we are committed to breaking them.”

“This past year, our artists continued to put the work in to take their careers to the next level,” Pitts says. From SZA to Doja Cat to Chris Brown, RCA maintained the success of some of the biggest names in R&B/hip-hop while nurturing the careers of in-demand rising stars such as Victoria Monét, who took home best new artist at the 2024 Grammys, and Tems, who released her highly anticipated debut album, Born in the Wild . The label also proved its prowess with hit singles this year, with Latto tapping Flo Milli and Megan Thee Stallion for the remix of “Sunday Service” and Bryson Tiller climbing to the top 20 on the Hot 100 with “Whatever She Wants.”

“There is a difference between finding success and building a career,” Pitts says. “We have to consistently strive for that delicate balance to ensure our artists have the space and resources to experiment and grow while navigating the ever-changing, fast-moving landscape.”

Obasaju calls 2023 “a particularly fruitful year” for Virgin Music Group in the hip-hop realm with successful releases from Meek Mill, NF, Czarface, Mohead Mike, G Herbo, Rylo Rodriguez and Icewear Vezzo. One of the company’s biggest breakthroughs was Nigerian star Rema, who hit No. 3 on the Hot 100 with his Selena Gomez collaboration, “Calm Down.” Elsewhere, Virgin scored successes with the Fast X soundtrack and a deal to release several Alicia Keys live albums, in addition to distributing R&B projects from Musiq Soulchild, Cory Henry, Jade Novah and Eric Bellinger.

“Artists feeling pressured to make nothing but hits and not being given the space to be creatives and to work with partners that prioritize their development,” Obasaju says. “Instead of constantly chasing that one record, artists need to be given the chance at a long career of sustained success. Far too many artists get that plaque and are never heard from again.”

And the whirlwind success of SZA’s second album, SOS , and subsequent Grammy accolades proved TDE’s roster still includes superstars. “This year, we celebrate our 20th anniversary as a label and are still developing artists at a high level,” says Moosa, Top Dawg’s son. “In our 19th year, we had our most successful album release to date with SZA’s SOS , and we’ve continued the momentum with Doechii’s viral hit ‘What It Is (Block Boy)’ and ScHoolboy Q’s acclaimed album Blue Lips .”

“Lack of originality and too much of an emphasis on virality as opposed to the quality of the music,” Moosa says.

Leland Tyler “Metro Boomin“ Wayne

Boominati worldwide.

The three-week run atop the Hot 100 for “Like That,” the hit by Future, Metro Boomin and Kendrick Lamar, is only the latest achievement for Metro Boomin. His label, Boominati Worldwide, was behind the original soundtrack to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse , which gave the producer the chance to showcase Boominati’s roster. “I was able to break Roisee with the end-credit song ‘Am I Dreaming,’ ” he says. “That’s another step forward for Boominati and just me as a businessman and a mogul.” With Future, he also released two albums this year that hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200: We Don’t Trust You and We Still Don’t Trust You .

“I’m putting everything into my own foundation I’ve started in memory of my mother, the Leslie Joanne Foundation. We’re starting out the outreach to help single mothers and their children, starting with St. Louis, of course. That’s where I’m from.”

Orlando Wharton

Priority records, capitol music group, tramiel “twin” clark, senior vp of artist relations, kenoe jordan, jessica eason, dante smith, vps of marketing.

Ice Spice cracked the top 10 of the Hot 100 four times in 2023 with her collaborations with Taylor Swift (“Karma”), PinkPantheress (“Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2”) and Nicki Minaj (“Princess Diana” and “Barbie World,” the latter with Aqua). That all preceded the July release of her debut album, Y2K!, on 10K/Capitol Records, which debuted at No. 3 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The Capitol team has also celebrated the breakout single from Doechii, whose “What It Is (Block Boy)” topped the Rhythmic Airplay chart. Wharton, who took the helm of the relaunched Priority Records in 2022, is looking for the next generation of risk-taking artists to sign.

“Creativity,” Wharton says. “Artists have to take more chances, and labels have to support them in their creative journey.”

Bryan “Birdman” Williams

Ronald “slim” williams, co-founders/co-ceos, cash money records.

Cash Money remains “one of the few iconic independent labels,” Ronald says of the company that helped launch the careers of Drake, Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne, among others. In 2023, according to Cash Money, the label had over 14 million global albums consumed and over 21 billion global streams (excluding user-generated content). The release of Jacquees’ new album, Sincerely for You, in December 2022 led to a resurgence of his hits “At the Club,” “B.E.D.” and “You.” Cash Money also launched several new artists including Rublow, Saxkboy KD, Onsight Deeda and TBoss. YouTube honored the Williams brothers at its Leaders and Legends black-tie event in late June.

The charity we support

“We founded the Johnny and Gladys Williams Foundation in honor of our parents in 1997,” Ronald says, “and the foundation became a nonprofit in 2015 … to give back to residents in our hometown, New Orleans.”

Nicole Wyskoarko

President/head of urban a&r, interscope geffen a&m, dash sherrod, geffen records, ramon alvarez-smikle, executive vp/head of digital marketing, laura carter, executive vp/head of urban marketing, jennifer drake, aura harewood, vp of urban marketing, interscope records.

The Interscope Geffen A&M team celebrated triumphs this year by Kendrick Lamar and Eminem while driving GloRilla’s rise. In May, Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” released amid a feud with Drake, became his fourth No. 1 on the Hot 100, and in July, Eminem’s The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) topped the Billboard 200. IGA also helped break GloRilla’s “Yeah Glo!,” pushing it to the top of Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay in May. The track, released in partnership with Yo Gotti’s CMG Records, has 245 million streams. Wyskoarko says IGA has had “great runs” with rappers on Playboi Carti’s Opium label: Ken Carson, Destroy Lonely and Homixide Gang.

“Powerful,” Wyskoarko says. “In its 51st year, hip-hop remains at the forefront of the cultural conversation and is as powerful as ever.”

Andre “Dr. Dre” Young

Ashley palmer-gilkey, aftermath entertainment.

It seems that every year is a big year for Dr. Dre. But while the Aftermath founder and “Godfather of Gangster Rap” has seemingly done all that there is to do in music and business, that hasn’t stopped him from trying to break new ground. After getting his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in March, Dre reteamed with his longtime business partner, Jimmy Iovine, and his former protégé Snoop Dogg to launch their new spirit company, Gin & Juice by Dre and Snoop, inspired by their 1993 song of the same name. The brand has sponsored some of the biggest music culture events of the year, including Kendrick Lamar’s historic concert, The Pop Out, held at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, Calif. In addition to executive-producing Eminem’s latest album, Dre is rumored to be working on new music with Snoop, meaning next year may be an even bigger one for Dre.

Eminem’s return with the death of slim shady (coup de grâce) , which topped the billboard 200 in july, marked his 11th no. 1 album on that chart..
