J.K. Rowling Is Selling Her $20 Million Yacht (With Interiors By...Johnny Depp)

Image may contain Vehicle Transportation Boat and Yacht

The mega best-selling Harry Potter series didn't just make J.K. Rowling famous—it made her rich enough to afford her very own luxury yacht. Although Rowling's yacht doesn't really resemble the giant pirate ship that brought the Durmstrang students to Hogwarts ahead of the Tri-Wizard Cup, it was previously owned by Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp , which is...close enough. Rowling bought the vessel , which Depp had named Amphitrite as an homage to then-wife Amber Heard, about a year ago for £22 million ($29 million) but is reportedly selling it at a loss with an asking price of €17.8 million ($20 million).

The yacht, which can accommodate up to ten people, has some pretty eye-dropping features, including a plush master bedroom suite with a king size bed, a formal dining room on the deck, and a cozy salon with ten large windows perfect for watching the sun set over the ocean . There's also top-of-the-line tech equipment and audio-visual equipment in case you feel like having a daylong Potter movie marathon. The bottom line: This boat is way nicer than the ones that Hogwarts first-years take to get across the lake. And how was there not a character named Amphitrite in Hufflepuff House?

This isn't the first time that Rowling has parted with some of her assets. In 2012, she sold the eight-bedroom Victorian mansion in Edinburgh where she had written the last four Potter books, for $3.6 million. Although Rowling's net worth was once estimated to be worth $1 billion, she has given away so much of her money to charity that she dropped off of the Forbes "world billionaires" list the same year that she sold her home. Her favorite causes are kid-related, most notably her own organization, Lumos (named for the Potterverse "let there be light" spell ), whose goal is to take poor and disabled children out of institutions and reunite or place them with families.

So far, no bidders have stepped forward to buy the yacht. But think about it—wouldn't a yacht be such a great place for a Quidditch match? Or a Yule Ball? Sadly, the decor was designed by Depp, and Rowling didn't change it, so there aren't any talking paintings, nearly-headless ghosts, or Rooms of Requirement on board. You can probably bring your own butterbeer, though...

A Closer Look at J.K. Rowling’s Yacht Vajoliroja

We’ve all seen J.K. Rowling’s rise to fame ever since the first Harry Potter book was published. The success of her career was a true rags-to-riches story, and J.K. Rowling deserves all the fringes of life for giving us one of the best literary series of all time. Now that she’s no longer a starving artist, J.K. Rowling makes sure she lives an excellent life; and one way she’s doing just that is by enjoying her yacht, the Vajoliroja. J.K. Rowling has enough money to buy whatever yacht she wants , and we’re going to take a look at why she picked this particular one to call her own.

Vajoliroja had another big time celebrity owner before it belonged to J.K. Rowling . The author bought the yacht from actor Johnny Depp. The yacht was a gift from Depp to his former partner Vanessa Paradis. Depp and his family, including his two children with Paradis—Lily-Rose and Jack—spent a great deal of time on the Vajoliroja. The couple named the yacht Vajoliroja as a play on the Jolly Roger pirate flag. It also combines the names of their family: “Va” for Vanessa, “Jo” for Johnny, “Li” for Lily-Rose, and “Ja” for Jack. It was a charming sentiment until Depp and Paradis went their separate ways. When Depp married Amber Heard in 2015, Vajoliroja’s name was changed to Amphitrite, Poseidon’s sea goddess wife in Greek mythology. Depp gave Amphitrite to his then new wife as a wedding present.

Vajoliroja’s price tag was £22 million, which is a small dent on J.K. Rowling’s billion-dollar net worth. For the novelist, it wasn’t about having the most lavish yacht at the marina. In fact, Rowling and her family spent one holiday on Depp’s boat and immediately fell in love with it. Rowling bought the yacht in 2016.

When Depp had Vajoliroja renovated in 2008, he didn’t hold back at all. The 156-foot superyacht featured 10 cabins. The crew took up five of those cabins, and the rest were left for the guests to enjoy. The yacht had three decks that scream bohemian, which is more of Depp’s style. There’s a subtle pirate theme that’s probably a nod to one of Depp’s most iconic movie roles—Captain Jack Sparrow. The yacht is filled with luscious fabrics and plush décor. There’s wood everywhere, which adds to the overall charm of the yacht. The seating areas are covered in attractive red velvet as well as plenty of the seating in the outdoor areas. There’s a covered dining area on one of the decks, which offers a stunning view of the waters when the yacht is at sea.

The yacht carries plenty of water activities to keep anyone entertained. There’s space available for waterskis, wakeboards, kayaks, snorkeling gear, and so much more. For those who prefer a different cup of tea, Vajoliroja is also outfitted with plenty of other entertainment opportunities. There’s a home cinema, satellite television, high speed Internet, video games, and so much more. There are also plenty of spaces for those who prefer to just lounge around, read all day, or even get some sun.

The yacht was originally built in Turkey by Turquoise, a luxury ship building yard. It’s made out of steel and aluminum and was designed with a 1930s theme. While the yacht is totally modern as it was built in 2001, it doesn’t feature all the sleek lines of contemporary ships. The mahogany wall panels prove just that, and the whole interior of the yacht projects a beautiful old-world feel. Where there’s no wall paneling, the walls are covered in intricate and rich-colored wallpaper. The heavy drapes are even tasseled, and the whole ship is dimly lit. Some call it romantic. Others call it historic. Still there are those that might feel magical in the yacht.

Vajoliroja may have vintage décor, but it doesn’t feel vintage when it comes to comfort. The master cabin is something worth experiencing. It features a large marble-accented bath that’s only second best when put next to the 180 degree ocean view. While the other guest cabins aren’t as fancy, they are still opulently decorated and extremely comfortable. The galley is well stocked and is the perfect place to make gourmet meals. The yacht can accommodate up to five cabin crewmembers at any given time. It has a cruising speed of 12 knots and has the capability of up to 2,500 nautical miles with its 28,000-liter fuel tank.

Final Thoughts

It’s the perfect yacht to take on vacation, and Rowling spent some good time on it with her family. Vajoliroja or Amphitrite, however, is no longer Rowling’s yacht. The novelist put the yacht up for charter and for sale back in 2017. At the time, it was available to charter for $130,000 a week. It was also for sale with a pricetag of $19.2 million USD. It’s definitely the type of yacht that only the wealthy could afford. Rowling enjoyed the yacht for about 8 months before she put it up on the market. Of course, it could’ve been just the busy lifestyle that kept her away from the seas too much. Rowling is reported to still own the yacht to this day, but Vajoliroja is still available for charter. You’ll be able to stay out at sea for a good amount of time with this yacht. It’s truly the perfect getaway that’s charming and truly out of this world. Being on the yacht is an experience unto itself—one that can be quite unforgettable.

J.K. Rowling and Johnny Depp Owned the Same Yacht—Who Has It Now?

J.K. Rowling dished out around $27 million in 2015 for the yacht Johnny Depp had sold just a few months prior. Who owns the yacht now?

Jennifer Farrington - Author

Hollywood actor Johnny Depp used to have a yacht transport him and his guests back and forth between the Bahamas and his private island , Little Hall’s Pond Cay. The Vajoliroja , which was purchased by Depp for $8 million and allegedly renamed Amphitrite , later sold in 2015 to an American businessman. It was then acquired by the Harry Potter series author J.K. Rowling .

Here’s how much Rowling paid for the yacht previously owned by Depp and some of the features it had while in her possession.

When it comes to money, Rowling clearly has plenty to spend. The billionaire author reportedly dished out around $27 million in 2015 for the yacht Depp had sold just a few months prior. About two years after purchasing the 156-foot-long watercraft, Rowling put it on the market for $19.2 million and allowed it to be chartered for about $130,000 per week, not including additional expenses, reports Variety .

Although the whereabouts of the yacht previously owned by Depp and Rowling is unknown, there is some speculation that it was listed for sale and purchased with the help of Curtis Stokes at Curtis Stokes & Associates. Simply put, Rowling no longer owns the luxury yacht.

While we can’t say for sure what the multimillion dollar yacht looks like today, we do know some of the features it had while in Rowling’s possession. The boat, which sits three decks high and accommodates 10 guests, featured the following, according to Variety :

  • “A bohemian-luxe main deck salon with rich wood paneling.”
  • Windows decorated with “swagged and tasseled drapery.”
  • “A state-of-the-art entertainment system.”
  • Four guest staterooms.
  • On-board Wi-Fi.

  • “Teak-trimmed glass doors.”

What is J.K. Rowling’s net worth?

Although spending $19 million on a yacht sounds frivolous, it didn’t lighten Rowling’s wallet much. After watching her sales from the Harry Potter series grow, Rowling reportedly began earning about $50 million to $100 million a year, according to Celebrity Net Worth . Today, her net worth is estimated to be $1 billion, though the media outlet says the author denies being a billionaire.

Not only has the Harry Potter series generated significant sales (and profit for Rowling), but it gave rise to other money-making opportunities, including The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando, merchandise, and major motion pictures.

While a great deal of Rowling’s net worth can be attributed to the money she makes off of book royalties , she also made money from “movie advances, movie rights, merchandise, and more,” allowing her to spend freely on yachts and make large charitable donations.

J K Rowling’s yacht ‘Samsara’ anchors in Fethiye

The 88.5-meter mega yacht “Samsara,” owned by British author J.K. Rowling , famous for the Harry Potter series, has anchored in the Fethiye district of Muğla.

The Cayman Islands-flagged vessel recently docked at Fethiye Pier, where it received 170 tons of fuel.

The Samsara, which has been cruising the Aegean coast, was previously spotted in Göcek for two weeks before making its way to Fethiye for refueling.

It remains unclear if Rowling herself is aboard the yacht during this trip. Following the refueling, Samsara returned to Göcek.

The sight of the mega yacht attracted significant attention from both local and foreign tourists, many of whom photographed the luxury vessel.

Muğla is a well-known hotspot for high-profile luxury yachts. In August, Emirati royal Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s 500 million pound yacht “Blue” and “Mar,” owned by Microsoft founder Bill Gates, were both docked off the coast of Bodrum.

The region continues to draw some of the wealthiest individual and their superyachts to its shores.

Vajoliroja is the stylish 156-ft. yacht which Johnny Depp bought in 2007 for undisclosed amount. Vajoliroja is a coined term after Va for Vanessa, Jo for Johnny, Li Ro for Depp’s daughter Lily Rose and Ja for Depp’s son Jack. However when Depp broke up with Vanessa Paradis and married Amber Heard, he eventually changed the name to Amphitrite, after the Greek sea goddess, which served as a wedding gift to Heard. Depp is known to be an avid fan of yacht in his private life and he has always been fond of life on water which he was finally to experience when he bought the yacht. He used the said yacht to cruise towards his private island located in the Bahamas named Little Hall’s Pond Cay.

It was reported that the author of series of seven fantasy novels Harry Potter, British author J.K. Rowling bought Depp’s Vajoliroja for $27 million in 2016. The author reportedly fell in love with the yacht after she took the vessel out on some family charter trip with her immediate family. Depp had the yacht completely refitted in 2008 to boast some attractive vintage lines for some 1930s tycoon vibe which was constructed by Turkey’s Turquoise Yachts in 2001. This was done to suit Depp’s requirement for the design that resembles some classic gentleman’s yacht.

The yacht was built by the Proteksan Turquoise in 2001 and since Depp had the yacht refitted in 2008, it has never been refitted again. Two prominent Turkish shipyards has joined forces in 1997 to eventually form the Proteksan Turquoise Yachts Inc. With their combined skill set and experiences, they were able to make some winning collaboration which produces some high quality vessels. Their shipyard facility is located in Istanbul, Turkey where the world class yachts are made. The luxury vessel which is now owned by J.K. Rowling had some sophisticated exterior design and engineering which was done by the Taka Yachts and the ones who designed the interiors is the LM Pagano Design. The classic style of the yacht gives off some vibe of some updated and state of the art type of technology which includes Zero Speed stabilizers, some entertainment system and some top of the line communication systems onboard.

The yacht also comes with some kayaks, board for windsurfing and dinghy which can be used by the guest of Amphitrite to enjoy some quality time while in the water. The yacht can accommodate guests up to 10 people n the five staterooms of the yacht which has room for crews that can fit up to nine people. The yacht can cruise comfortably at12 knots and can reach the maximum speed of 14 knots. The British author is reportedly using the yacht for holidays to some destinations with her family however the superyacht can be chartered for $90,000 per week which used to be $130,000 when Johnny Depp still owned the yacht.

The Amphitrite offers the guests some stylish accommodation with one master bedroom, two rooms with double beds and two rooms with twin beds. The yacht which was refitted to resemble some vintage bordello has a velvet finish overall and the color palette of the boat had some reds and golds. The Iconic Designer of exterior Tanju Kalaycioglu intended the yacht to be a creation of modern design with some look of the vintage steam yacht. This was done using some non functional masts which was designed with some overhanging fantail stern, a smokestack and square wooden cabin top deck.

The superyacht features some typical contemporary luxury yacht which can serve as a helicopter pad which also has swimming pool and Jacuzzi on board. There are also some waterskis, and snorkel gears on board that will surely provide enough entertainment for the water lovers. There is also some entertainment inside the yacht including a satellite TV, some iPod docking stations and game consoles which can be played such as Playstation 3, and Wii.

J.K. Rowling’s luxury yacht proves she’s still in her Egregiously Rich Umbridge era despite online hate speech

Nahila Bonfiglio

For years now, fantasy lovers have been forced to contend with a treasured staple of their childhoods and its connection to a writer who has willfully participated in transphobic remarks in recent years.

J.K. Rowling made her thoughts on transgender rights clear years ago, and since then she’s seen her popularity plummet — but not enough to hurt her where it counts. Her wallet is still overstuffed from decades of fervent Harry Potter passion, and — even as boycotts limit her future earning potential — she’s absolutely rolling in that Wizarding World cash.

So much so that she’s the proud owner of an eye-wateringly expensive yacht, which she uses to cruise around the world without needing to rub elbows with her many detractors . Those trans-exclusionary views haven’t made her many friends, but who needs friends when you have billions?

J.K. Rowling’s multi-million dollar yacht

J.K. Rowling yacht - the Samsara

It’s nothing new that J.K. Rowling is bafflingly wealthy, but many people would love to think that the wave of boycotts and outright rejection of Rowling and all of her properties would be enough to take her down a tax bracket. Unfortunately, Harry Potter is still a strong property and, with yet another adaptation of the once-beloved series in development, Rowling’s bank account isn’t set to drain anytime soon.

We all made Rowling a billionaire, and — unfortunately for everyone with empathy and kindness in their hearts — she used it to further the trans-exclusionary movement . Over the last few years she’s become the face of the radical feminist, transgender-erasing movement , and, no matter what we desire, that unfortunately makes Harry Potter complicit.

She made her money off our fandom, and for years she’s been pouring her more than $1 billion net worth into plenty of luxurious things, but among the most lavish is her $150 million yacht . Made in 2015, the Samsara Yacht boasts seven cabins for guests and 13 for crew, 88.5 meters in length, and a maximum speed of 20 knots. It also costs between $10 and $15 million annually to upkeep, so any dreams of Rowling’s coffers draining clearly remain unfulfilled.

We still have a chance to show Rowling how little approval her toxic exclusionary stance has among her one-time fans, particularly with the new W.B. series on the way. We likely won’t ever make her a pauper, but we can turn our backs on her bigoted ideologies and support transgender people by putting that Harry Potter money toward much more worthy causes .

J.K. Rowling’s Luxe Yacht Available to Rent or Buy (EXCLUSIVE)

J.K. Rowling , staggeringly wealthy author of the phenomenally popular “Harry Potter” novels that begat the blockbuster film franchise, has her celebrity-pedigreed yacht “Amphitrite” available for both charter and purchase. The 156-foot-long boat, formerly christened Vajoliroja and previously owned by Johnny Depp , can be chartered at a high-season rate of about $130,000 per week, plus expenses, and is also for sale, per online listings, at not quite $19.2 million. Ownership of multimillion-dollar water craft can be difficult to trace — they’re often owned through inscrutable offshore corporate ventures — but Depp is reported to have sold the boat in the fall of 2015 to an American businessman who quickly flipped it to Rowling sometime in late 2015 or early 2016 for about $27 million, substantially below its current price tag.

The classically styled and plushly furnished yacht includes a bohemian-luxe main deck salon with rich wood paneling, 10 windows decadently dressed with swagged and tasseled drapery, and a state-of-the-art entertainment system with satellite television. Teak-trimmed glass doors slide open to the covered aft deck where there’s a 10-seat, al fresco dining table and a curved bank of cushioned banquettes. The three-deck boat will comfortably accommodate 10 in four guest staterooms, all with postage stamp-sized en suite heads, plus a master stateroom with a dressing vestibule and a marble-accented bath. There are, additionally, a total of five crew cabins, and the well-stocked galley is capable of turning out gourmet meals.

Amphitrite, which cruises at a speed of 12 knots with 28,000-liter fuel tanks that give it a range of close to 2,500 nautical miles, provides state-of-the-art comforts such as air conditioning, on-board Wi-Fi, videogame consoles, and recreational equipment that includes kayaks, snorkeling gear, windsurfing and wake boards, and two tenders for water skiing and jaunts ashore.

Rowling’s terra firma residences include a Georgian-style townhouse on a swanky, guard-gated street in London’s highbrow Kensington neighborhood as well as Killiechassie House, a 19th century country mansion on close to 100 pastoral acres along the banks of the River Tay near Aberfeldy, about 75 miles north of Edinburgh.
