SUPERYACHT LIFE

The human side of yacht ownership

How would you characterise the typical yacht owner? Whatever you may have been led to believe, the truth is simple: for most, it’s about using their yachts for precious family time, and for many it’s also about using their yachts for good.

There’s a theme that is repeated on countless yachts large and small the world over – superyachting, for most, is not about being seen but rather the opposite. It’s about yacht families and their friends enjoying precious, private moments away from the pressures of demanding business lives and the long hours running those businesses can entail.

“I have an extended family, and when our schedules allow we all like to gather on the yacht and spend some quality time as a family,” Douglas Barrowman , owner of the yacht Turquoise , told Superyacht Life back in 2017. “There is no place like a yacht for family togetherness.”

A love of the sea, adventure and technology

Superyachts and yacht ownership are also a way to explore the world around us, and to interact with and grow to understand extraordinarily diverse communities from remote Pacific islands to the Scandinavian Arctic. It’s something that inspired tech entrepreneur Jasper Smith to combine his love of adventure and his love of the sea with an opportunity for owners to give back while indulging their passion.

“I have always had a deep passion for the ocean,” Smith says. “I grew up watching Jacques Cousteau movies and being enthralled at the idea of being challenged by an endeavour.” When he set out to find his own perfect explorer yacht, however, he realised it didn’t yet exist. His answer was to create Arksen. “My aim with Arksen was to create the perfect machines to enable adventure,” he enthuses. “I also wanted to build sustainable boats which considered full life cycles, from material sourcing to recycling.”

That’s not all – Arksen also asks owners of its yachts to sign up to a pledge it calls 10% for the Ocean, where they will donate 10% of their vessel’s time to philanthropic activities. “A lot of people who have the money feel a responsibility to try and make sure that the oceans are well looked after,” Smith explains. “The people that are attracted to Arksen are passionate about the ocean and want to go off on slightly more advanced expeditions and trips. With that audience, there is a tremendous buy-in to the boat being for more than just their own purposes.”

The human side of yacht ownership

Superyachts as a force for good

It speaks to the heart of the matter, which is that the superyacht industry and yacht owners in particular have a heart – they care about preserving the environment they enjoy, and they care about the communities they interact with who make them feel so welcome when they visit. It’s reflected in the smallest of gestures, such as donating materials and books to local schools, to the largest – helping with last-mile delivery of critical disaster relief. It’s about superyachts giving back.

It’s a positive-impact attitude toward humanity that is quietly typified by hundreds of superyacht owners, who often prefer to do their thing under the radar rather than take false glory for their philanthropic or humanitarian endeavours. For some it’s as straightforward as getting involved in projects with organisations like YachtAid Global . For others, their endeavours become a key reason for yachting.

American superyacht owner Carl Allen is a prime example of these philanthropic yacht owners. After selling his company, and having enjoyed chartering and owning yachts as a family for years, Allen set up Allen Explorations to deliver a full programme of projects, ranging from historical shipwreck searches and environmental research to disaster relief. Indeed, Allen’s support yacht Axis played a vital role in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian – one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the Bahamas.

“We had to drop everything and help after the hurricane,” says Allen. “ Axis delivered over £700,000 of supplies and made multiple trips to Little Grand island in the Bahamas. We’ve turned it into the epitome of how to organise hurricane relief.” The team helped get the local school back up and running, and organised for a group from Florida Power and Light to help restore power. “The island also lost their water tower,” he adds, “so we delivered four tanks on  Axis .”

Celebrating the good in the superyachting good life

From family time to time spent embracing the global family, superyacht owners have a far greater positive impact than many assume from preconceived ideas about what a superyacht is and the sort of person who owns or charters one. It’s one of the reasons The Superyacht Life Foundation, in association with the Monaco Yacht Show , has unveiled The Honours, which is a way to celebrate the people of our industry rather than the yachts which so often get sole focus. It’s about recognising the extraordinary contributions that people make, the change they inspire, the opportunities they create, and the lives they change.

On 26 September, the eve of the 2023 Monaco Yacht Show, three honourees – nominated by people from across the superyacht industry, and selected from a shortlist by an expert panel of industry judges – will be feted for their work and contribution to superyachting. These are industry professionals and yacht owners who epitomise what superyachting can do. These are people who highlight the good in the superyachting good life.

Yacht owners, impactful journeys

All around the globe, yacht owners are enjoying precious time on their yachts with family and friends, and many are also realising that their yachts can be a force for good and for change, tying in with their philanthropic works and humanitarian endeavours.

“Our yacht is a platform for much of our life,” offers Joe Anderson , co-owner of the Benovia Winery in California with his wife, Mary Dewane. “For instance, we used it at a fundraiser for cystic fibrosis in Baltimore at the 200th anniversary of the Star-Spangled Banner event. The Blue Angels were flying overhead and used Bella Una [the couple’s yacht] as a GPS coordinate and performed flybys, tipping their wings at us. It was quite a thrill. Having a yacht is a way to keep the family intact, enjoy time with friends and have fun.”

Billionaire husband of Michelle Mone lines up a £50MILLION mega-yacht

  • Lady Mone has stated that the pair hope to retire and sail the world in 2025
  • Husband, Doug Barrowman made more than £60 million profit on a PPE contract deal with the government

The billionaire husband of 'Baroness Bra' Michelle Mone is preparing to take delivery of a £50 million mega-yacht, sources on the French Riviera say.

Scottish businessman Doug Barrowman – at the centre of a PPE procurement scandal with his wife – sold a 187ft (57m) yacht, Turquoise, in October last year for a reported £17.5 million. A smaller yacht, the Lady M, is now up for sale for £6.8 million.

The 58-year-old is a noted yacht enthusiast and said in a previous televised interview that he felt he had 'one more boat' in him, at a budget of £50 million.

Lady Mone added in a separate interview that the two of them hoped to retire and sail the world in 2025.

Sources in Monaco say Mr Barrowman has long planned to purchase and design his own 'ultimate' dream vessel and say that 'Vento' – currently being fitted out in Turkey – is his new craft.

The 285ft (87m) yacht boasts a hull finished in Tour de France blue, a swimming pool, a helipad that doubles as a basketball court, an outdoor cinema, bar and spiral staircase, plus a beauty salon and beach club.

It is being fitted by London-based H2 Designs, who previously worked with Mr Barrowman on a refit of Turquoise and of the Lady M. Vento is due to be delivered to its new owner this year.

Jonny Horsfield, the boss of H2, did not return requests for comment about the owner of the new yacht.

Yacht broker Glynn Smith, of Ethereal Yachts – who did the deal for Vento – did not deny that the client was Mr Barrowman but said that he was bound by 'strict confidentiality' and added that the client 'wished to remain anonymous'.

Mr Barrowman's office and lawyer, and Lady Mone's office, did not return requests for comment.

The timing of the purchase could be embarrassing, as the National Crime Agency is investigating allegations of fraud and bribery surrounding the firm PPE Medpro.

PPE Medpro, a consortium that Mr Barrowman led, was awarded more than £200 million by the Government to supply medical equipment.

It is currently being sued by the Government for £122 million for 'breach of contract and unjust enrichment' over claims that its surgical gowns were unfit for use.

The company denies the allegations and Mr Barrowman says that he is confident that he will win his civil case.

Lady Mone, who founded the lingerie label Ultimo, lobbied Ministers Michael Gove and Lord Agnew for the PPE contracts but initially denied she had connections to the firm. She now admits that was a lie.

Mr Barrowman made more than £60 million profit on the deal, much of which was transferred to an offshore trust of which Lady Mone and her children are beneficiaries.

The National Crime Agency has frozen her bank accounts during the investigation. A string of assets owned by Lady Mone, 52, and Mr Barrowman have been put up for sale, including a home on St Barts, the Lady M yacht and a Cessna private jet.

The couple's London home and Algarve villa have reportedly been sold. They live on the Isle of Man, which is a tax haven.

In a statement published on Lady Mone's account on X/Twitter, Mr Barrowman sought to highlight failures from the Department of Health and Social Care.

'Michelle and I are being hung out to dry to distract attention from Government incompetence in how it handled PPE procurement,' he said. 'I understand why the British public feel angry but their anger should not be directed at Michelle or I.'

He added that Medpro's profit was in line with that made by other PPE providers.

In a Channel 4 documentary, Million Pound Mega Yachts, broadcast in 2015, Mr Barrowman said he had spent around £3 million refitting the yacht Turquoise with H2.

He added: 'You have to spend it on something. There's a limit to the amount of houses you can have and private air travel.'

He added that he and H2 boss Mr Horsfield had spent 'hours' talking about the design of the boat and said: 'I think we've got another boat in us really.'

Mr Barrowman's yacht Turquoise featured in the Sky drama series Riviera in 2017. It was seen in one of the episode's opening sequences as the setting for an orgy, and was then 'blown up' via special effects. Mr Barrowman made a cameo appearance.

Producer Paul McGuinness, formerly U2's manager, told GQ magazine that Mr Barrowman had insisted on drinking Dom Perignon while the other actors and extras had sparkling apple juice. 'He loved being on the show.

'He didn't see why he had to drink coloured water and we certainly weren't going to tell him what he should drink,' McGuinness said.

In an interview with the Daily Record in 2020, Lady Mone said: 'Doug and I dream of getting a yacht and going around the world… At the moment. we've got too much on our plate but in five years' time, I see us doing that.'

More tributes pour in following passing of Ed Dubois

Update : Since publishing this we've received even more tributes, which are published in full at the bottom of this article

Tributes to legendary yacht designer Ed Dubois have poured in since the sad news of his death last Thursday. The company he founded, Dubois Naval Architects , announced his passing in a statement, saying that despite a period of illness last year, he had recently been in better health, but was unexpectedly admitted to hospital last week.

“Ed’s career spanned decades and his passion, commitment to his work and love of his clients created a unique business, driven by exceptional design and technical talent and a genuine desire to create the most breathtakingly beautiful and technically advanced yachts that are now scattered across the globe,” the statement said.

Peter Bolke, who has worked at the company for 23 years, has been announced as the new managing director.

Over the weekend, tributes flooded in from superyacht owners and those from the industry, who have come together to share their finest memories of Dubois and celebrate his greatest achievements.

Boat International Media President Tony Harris led the tributes: "Ed was the preeminent sailing superyacht designer of the modern era. But he was always more than just a yacht designer; he was a sailor, storyteller, indefatigable charity fundraiser, entrepreneur and a loving father and husband who will be missed by everyone whose lives he has touched. His genius will be remembered long after we are all gone, as his classic designs will outlive us all. I have had the pleasure of Ed’s company from Auckland to Istanbul and I feel sure he’ll have a 'dark and stormy' ready for me when I meet him next. Sail on Ed"

His genius will be remembered long after we are all gone, as his classic designs will outlive us all

Tony Harris, President of Boat International Media

Neville Crichton , who commissioned Dubois to design nine superyachts for him , expressed his shock and sadness at his passing. "I have lost a great friend, his family has lost an utterly devoted husband and father and the industry has lost a legendary yacht designer who leaves an unrivalled legacy. Ed has designed nine boats for me in the 35 years we have known each other. Every design expressed both his fine eye for the aesthetics of yacht design and his unbridled passion and the development of superyachts.

"Both working and sailing with Ed was always an absolute pleasure as he found the light side of every situation. I will always remember his laughter during our time together, whether it was working out the details of a new design or cruising on a new yacht. My sincerest condolences go to his wife, Honor, and their children for whom I know Ed was the centre of their world, as they were to him.”

Malcolm McKeon , who worked with Ed for more than three decades, said: “Ed was a charismatic man, who brought a smile to the face of everyone he encountered. After working together with Ed for more than 30 years, and creating countless successful designs, I have many enjoyable memories and experiences which I will always treasure. Ed had an incredible positive energy, and an infectious enthusiasm for the work we did. He will be remembered always.”

Ed Dubois was indeed a superb visionary designer, but moreover, he was a thoughtful, kind and compassionate man – a true gentleman

Mehmet Karabeyoglu, CEO of Turquoise Yachts

Dubois designed 50 metre Turquoise (now Double Trouble ), the first superyacht built by Turkish yard Turquoise Yachts . In a statement from the builder, CEO Mehmet Karabeyoglu hailed Dubois’ design for “propelling Turquoise Yachts into a new direction of superyacht design and building”. He said: "Ed Dubois was indeed a superb visionary designer, but moreover, he was a thoughtful, kind and compassionate man – a true gentleman. I also knew him to be a loving husband and father with a strong commitment to family.

"In addition to a professional relationship between Dubois Naval Architects and Turquoise Yachts, Ed and I enjoyed a deep personal connection – sharing a passion for the sea and sailing. We never ran out of interesting conversation and sea stories respecting each other’s experiences and enjoying each other’s sense of humour. We at Turquoise Yachts wish to offer our sincere condolences to Ed’s family, friends and colleagues."

Boat International columnist Eddie Jordan said he and Dubois met through children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent. "I was a patron and he a hugely generous supporter for which I will always remember him,” he said. "More recently, last summer he invited me to the Dubois Cup in Sardinia, a wonderful regatta for boats he had designed, and a triumphant success with Ed and his family. They were all in great form enjoying every moment. Ed Dubois was an extremely talented man but it was his generosity, fun-loving, caring and happy manner that had the most effect on me. I will miss him greatly.”

Ed Dubois was an extremely talented man but it was his generosity, fun-loving, caring and happy manner that had the most effect on me. I will miss him greatly

Eddie Jordan

Barry Houghton , who owns Dubois yacht Salperton IV , said: "Ed was not only a fantastic and original designer but an amazing powerful character who had a charming personal style as all who knew him experienced. I commissioned three new yacht designs from Dubois Naval Architects and had spoken about a fourth. The design and build process was one of the best times that I have had and if you add to this the fact that Ed was a megastar at the social and party scene in the superyacht industry, it's easy to see how sail yacht builds with Ed were a great experience. He will be sadly missed by all who met him.”

Paola and Salvatore Trifiro , former owners of 50m Zefira , were amongst the first to offer their tributes. "The knowledge with Ed, ten years ago, literally changed our life, "ferrying" us from the nice but heavy, wood or steel boats to sleek, streamlined creatures he designed, always ready, prow to the wind. He did for us the beautiful Zefira , who is still in the eyes of her many admirers, introducing us to the world of fast performing cruising sailing boats and also to that of the regattas. Now he has left us, suddenly and silently, as it was in his nature of a real gentleman, always kind and smiling. Our sorrow is enormous, we'll miss him so much, but if we do improve, we'll see him sailing free into the wind towards an unknown but serene island in the sky. Ciao Ed!”

The owner of the Dubois-designed  Mondango 3 first met Ed when looking for a sailing superyacht at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2005. "When we were leaving the show, we passed by the Dubois booth. I didn't know Ed but had heard of him. I left my card and mentioned that I would be in London the following day. Not only did I hear from him, but he was at our flat either the same day or the day after. For the consummate salesman this was a tip not to pass up. With Ed's knowledge of his craft and being the salesman he was, he convinced me of what we wanted. We always had good times with Ed. He will be missed.”

We are currently on a three year round the world trip enjoying Ed's design which never goes unnoticed wherever we drop anchor and we are certainly proud of it. Thank you Ed for all this

Owner of _Escapade_

The owner of Escapade , a Fitzroy-built Dubois boat, paid this tribute. "Ed was certainly acknowledged as one of the great – if not the greatest – naval architects of our time for sailing superyachts. By continuing to explore new technologies, he managed to merge performance and elegance in his designs and by co-operating with talented interior designers provided a very high level of comfort in what is, no matter the size, always a challenge on a sailing yacht. We are currently on a three-year round the world trip enjoying Ed's design which never goes unnoticed wherever we drop anchor and we are certainly proud of it. Thank you Ed for all this.”

“Last year we had the great opportunity of personally meeting Ed Dubois during the owners' event at the bucket race in St. Barths,” explained the owner of Bella Ragazza , a Dubois yacht launched in 2004. " Bella Ragazza is our first Dubois sailing yacht. Even though we bought her at the age of 10, the design still looks brand new and is absolutely timeless. Ed was one of only a few designers who were able to find a good balance between a cruising boat and a performance boat. We are very happy to own and run such a great yacht and she will always remind us of her great designer.”

Douglas Barrowman , owner of 55.4m Turquoise , described Dubois as the perfect gentleman. "All I would say is that Ed was a great man whose memory will live on through the beautiful yacht designs that he created; both power and sail. The Dubois Cup last year was a showcase for his life's work and as owner of Turquoise , a Dubois design, I was privileged to be a part of the event."

A recent tribute from Andrew Langton and Pascale Reymond reads: "Ed was such a charming and talented designer, a true legend. Such a great loss and our heartfelt condolences go to Honor and their children. We were fortunate to work on a number of his amazing yachts from Turquoise to Mondango 3 and it was always such a pleasure to be around Ed, he was a very special person indeed and will be greatly missed."

Lang Walker , owner of 58 metre Kokomo , added: "Ed was the father of modern yacht design. Twenty five years ago he pioneered the current style and was a leading light in changing new yacht design to wrap around windscreens. He was a talented designer with a great team.

"I got to know Ed very well through the design and construction of three ‘Kokomo’ yachts over the last 18 years. We had many enjoyable times and Ed was a real character with a terrific sense of humour. He was also a master raconteur. Ed will be sadly missed, but long remembered for his achievements."

Ed is real loss to the industry. He was quite the raconteur

Tony Hambrook, former CEO of Alloy Yachts

Henk de Vries , CEO of Feadship , worked with Ed Dubois since 2011. His tribute reads: "Ed Dubois will be remembered as a designer of amazing modern craft, but I will recall him as that unique philosopher-gentleman, soft spoken and modest. Feadship and Dubois started working together in 2011, and under his guidance we were allowed to create works of art on the water. Ed became a friend, long may his ships sail."

Tony Hambrook , who was the CEO of Alloy Yachts in New Zealand where many Ed Dubois yachts were built, echoed the sentiments of many: "He was an absolute pleasure to work with, he had some very original ideas, many of them he developed himself and they contributed to the success of his business and ours. We had a mutually beneficial arrangement. He introduced us to some customers and conversely we introduced clients to him. It was not a contractual thing; I think we appreciated each other’s ability.

"Ed is real loss to the industry. He was quite the raconteur. He was very good at telling stories and part of his success was due to his ability to get along with people.

Lingerie tycoon Michelle Mone has found new love with one of Britain's wealthiest entrepreneurs, who recently appeared on a TV documentary with his £50million super yacht.

Baroness Mone, who was made a Tory peer and Government business tsar last year, has been romantically linked with Scots billionaire Doug Barrowman after the pair were spotted arm-in-arm last week.

Mr Barrowman, 51, who featured on Channel 4 documentary Million Pound Mega Yachts last year, owns homes around the world and has a luxury car collection which includes five Ferraris.

Meeting of true minds: Michelle Mone, left, has apparently fallen for fellow Scot Doug Barrowman (right), who owns a super yacht, a classic car collection, a private jet and a global property portfolio

He appeared on the show with his 183ft super yacht Turquoise – one of two that he owns - which has a crew of 13, as well as an outdoor cinema, a grand piano in the lounge and hand-made silk carpets.

Originally from Rutherglen, near Glasgow, Mr Barrowman made his fortune in private equity and property development. He relocated from Cheshire in 2008 to the tax haven of the Isle of Man, where he now lives in a £120 million home, which also featured on the Channel 4 show.

News of the romance between the tycoons comes four months after Baroness Mone called time on her relationship with her former partner, golf professional Stefan Soroka. Friends blamed her split from the Barbados-based golfer on work commitments which made it difficult for them to spend time together as a couple.

There is no danger of a repeat situation, however, as Mr Barrowman, who has been married previously, has a private jet. Last year, as a 50th birthday present to himself, he flew the aircraft from the Isle of Man to Girona for lunch at El Cellar de Can Roca, the world's best restaurant, before flying back home again.

The multi-millionairess peer, dubbed Baroness Bra after being elevated to the House of Lords by David Cameron, sold her lingerie company Ultimo last year and now divides her time between London and travelling the world, speaking to young entrepreneurs.

In October, she joined forces with F1 legend and president of charity UK Youth Nigel Mansell to launch Social Superstore, an online retail venture. It was at the inaugural shareholders' meeting that she met Mr Barrowman, a fellow investor, for the first time.

Last night, Baroness Mone, who has three grown-up children with former husband and business partner Michael Mone, declined to comment – but friends confirmed the relationship.

One said: 'Michelle couldn't be happier. It's like a fairy tale. She feels as if she has finally met her match in business and in love.'

Mr Barrowman, a keen supporter of the Prince's Trust charity, which he donated £2 million to last year, recently described himself in an interview as coming from 'quite a humble background', where it was 'quite hard to get your first toe, never mind your first foot, on the ladder in business life'.

His first entrepreneurial venture was aged 20, setting up paintball sites in Scotland, before spending three years at private equity fund 3i, learning the foundations for acquiring businesses in his own right.

Mr Barrowman – who is chairman and founder of the Knox Group, with assets of £1.25 billion – has admitted that the scale of his success can be overwhelming.

Referring to Turquoise, which cost him £50 million to buy and redesign three years ago, he said: 'It was a dream of mine to own a boat like that and she turns heads wherever she goes but it's a major operation to get into any harbour and a lot of responsibility on the captain and its 13 crew.

'Once we came into Bonifacio, in Corsica, where you have to reverse half a mile down the channel. Turquoise was bigger than the buildings on either side and there were hundreds of people lining the streets to see her coming in. That's quite surreal seeing that happen.'

Last night, a spokesman for Mr Barrowman declined to comment on his romance with Baroness Mone.

It comes as Mone and her billionaire husband Doug Barrowman face a National Crime Agency investigation after the peer recommended PPE Medpro during the pandemic, a firm with connections to her husband - with the pair denying any wrongdoing.

The House of Lords commissioner for standards launched into Baroness Mone in January following a complaint by the Labour peer George Foulkes.

The group was awarded two contracts worth £200 million to supply surgical gowns and other items during the pandemic in 2020 which proved useless after the goods failed an inspection. The Department for Health is in dispute with PPE Medpro over millions of surgical gowns which it bought for £122m in 2020.

They often spend holidays on the yacht.

Once it became public last year that she had referred PPE Medpro to the Cabinet Office using the "VIP lane", Baroness Mone admitted she made the “very simple, solitary and brief step” but insisted “did not do anything further in respect of PPE Medpro”.

But in leaked Whatsapp messages Mone was allegedly asked what size of gowns were required under the Department of Health deal and replied: “We are just about to take off in the jet. The sizes are in the order. We are waiting for the official PO [purchase order], this should come in today.”

Mone’s lawyers said she could not be expected to comment on “unknown and unattributable WhatsApp messages allegedly sent 19 months ago”.

Sources told the Guardian newspaper that Barrowman, an offshore entreprenuer on the Isle of Man, was "part of the financial consortium that backed" PPE Medpro. But his lawyers said the allegations were “largely incorrect”.

Four properties linked to the firm, including a £25 million Isle of Man bolt hole were raided by the NCA in April. No arrests were made during simultaneous raids in London and the Isle of Man but officers seized documents and electronic devices.

Set up by Mr Barrowman in 2017 – with his wife as a trustee – it donates to the Prince’s Trust, but has not lodged any donations in its accounts.
