Cobia 240 CC Boat Test

  • By Chris Caswell
  • Updated: March 13, 2019

Cobia 240 CC Boat Test

The new Cobia 240CC, an improved and redesigned 237CC, proved itself a quadruple winner during our test. It’s not only great for both fishing and family outings, but its 21.5-degree deadrise is also just as comfortable in far offshore waters as its 17-inch draft is skimming over the flats.

Wraparound seating in the bow boasts the high-end appointment of fully finished self-draining compartments underneath (for stowage, or extra fish if you’re lucky), and a hatch in the sole big enough to devour fenders, lines and gear.

The console is a masterpiece with a forward-facing seat hiding a cooler, and the entire panel opens to reveal a private head. This isn’t a cramped box, but a fully molded space for easy cleaning with a sink, pull-out shower and 6 feet of headroom.

Cobia 240 CC Boat Test

The helm side of the console is equally well-done, with room for a pair of monitors on the dash in front of the standard leaning post. Our test boat had the optional comfy Llebroc helm seats with dual bolsters, folding armrests and, on the aft side, drawers plus three tackle boxes. You’d be silly not to order the hardtop with powder-coated aluminum frame and inset windshield and vent, plus stowage, lights, speakers and five rocket launchers.

The foldaway rear seat provides room for anglers, and a 28-gallon livewell is in the transom next to the door. In the floor are a pair of 33-gallon macerated fish boxes. The coamings are fully padded.

Cobia 240 CC Boat Test

Construction is first-rate: all-composite, no-wood, no-rot with a 10-year transferable structural warranty. Thoughtful build details include seacocks on all through-hulls, copper-tinned marine-grade wiring, and 316-grade stainless-steel hardware. Access to the house and cranking batteries under the console is good, and you can easily service the engine rigging inside the transom.

Cobia 240 CC Boat Test

The 240CC is set up for either single or twin outboards to 300 hp. Our test boat had a Yamaha F300 that pushed us to 51 mph. As we expected, this Cobia carved clean, no-cavitation turns flat-out, and slicing through wakes and chop was painless.

No question, the 240CC is a clear winner for Cobia.

High Points

  • All lockers are fully finished.
  • Custom wiring harnesses feature pull cords and labels.
  • Easy access to all systems.
  • Through-stem anchor roller has space for windlass.
  • We’d like to see the transom cleats mounted lower and farther aft, where they’d allow cross-tying without chafing the engine cowls.
  • We’d like to see tubing attached to the bottom of the rod holders installed in the transom so that water can drain past pumps — instead of dripping on them — and into the bilge.
  • Gas-tank fillers opposite the helm don’t have much splash protection to keep fuel “burps” from going into the cockpit right next to the batteries.

Toughest Competitor The American Marine Sports Shearwater 25LTZ ($83,805) trades the in-console head for a forward casting platform, and has 2 to 3 inches less draft and a lifetime hull warranty.

Cobia 350 CC: 2021 Boat Buyers Guide

  • Updated: December 14, 2020

Cobia 350 CC running in blue water

Cobia Boats deck layouts position everything at hand when needed or wanted, and out of the way otherwise. No awkward steps or trip hazards. Enough freeboard to feel secure, not so much that fishing’s a pain. Handholds are unobtrusive, but handy when you need one.

It’s all done so you can focus on the fish and the fishing, not make adjustments to your boat.

There’s a lot to admire when you consider a Cobia: a fine, far-forward bow entry that extends running surfaces, slicing through waves before pushing them aside to create a soft ride. Further smoothing that ride is the variable-deadrise hull, which also aids fuel efficiency.

Cobias are built with backing plates and screw-retention materials at each fastening point, double-clamped hoses reinforced with sealant, and epoxy-coated and pressure-tested aluminum fuel tanks. Decks are stiffened with carbon-reinforced beams. Bilge interiors are finished. Electrical harnesses are created in-house with copper-tinned wiring that’s labeled.

Cobia is a Maverick Boat Group brand, along with Maverick, Hewes and Pathfinder boats.

Cobia 350 CC

The new Cobia 350 Center Console blends high style and hard-charging performance so you can fish hard and play easy.

A double-stepped, vacuum-infused hull makes getting to fishing grounds fast and fuel efficient, ahead of triple 300 hp or twin 425 hp Yamahas.

Fishing features include dual 42-gallon bait tanks (pleasing 96 percent of CC respondents), two large in-floor fish boxes, full tackle station, and bait prep area. Optional are deluxe top, kingfish rod holders, outriggers and kite-rod holders. Wide at 11 feet, 2 inches—as well as wide-open—the 350 CC has plenty of room for several anglers to fish.

Cobia 350 CC head

Other options include joystick control, air conditioning and Garmin Master Suite electronics, including radar.

The 350 CC’s 11-person -seating includes triple helm seats, a two-person chaise longue and cushioned sun lounge; 40 percent of CC survey respondents want bow seating. A hideaway bow table electronically rises, for picnic or party or to complete a casting deck.

Within the walk-down console is a spacious berth with wooden cabinetry, an electric head, a combination sink/shower, and hidden, lockable rod storage. Easy access to the logical wiring and electrical system assures easy maintenance down the road.

Survey Says: On Target

  • Seven insulated boxes serve as coolers or dry storage
  • Six gunwale cockpit rod holders; more in transom and throughout boat
  • Really takes on the waves and makes the ride smooth
  • Ample space to fish
  • Fishes hard and plays easy
  • Elegant topside amenities bathe you in style and comfort
  • Tournament-capable fishing features

Reader Response

  • “A safe and dry ride”

1969 cobia mini yacht want to paint

I have a small 22' houseboat that is original on bottom and painted on topside.the bottom has some blistering and spidering I need advice on paint and proper repair tech-nicks.and I question if a houseboat that will barley do 10 miles an hour would need anti fowling paint.i would like recommendations on how and what kind of paint to use to paint the hulll of this boat Thanks leb

jbcurt00

Re: 1969 cobia mini yacht want to paint Needing anti-fouling paint & hull blisters are likely separate situations that need to be addressed separately. Related, yes, cause & effect, yes. But repaired as separate problems needing to be resolved. As I understand blisters, it is caused by water penetrating the fiberglass hull's gelcoat, creating bubbles, which causes delamination (or more accurately, ARE blisters)...... 1 reference Repair & prevention of those are 2 things you need to address: another reference and another Anti-fouling paint is to keep a moored boat's hull free of biological growth: reference Hence the anti-fouling name. If there is biological growth on the hull, there is likely to be quicker & more invasive water penetration.... However, good anti-fouling (A/F) paint also adds an additional barrier coat to prevent hull penetration by water: reference The speed at which the boat moves is of little importance to whether or not you need A/F paint...... As a houseboat that will likely be moored year round, you should fix the blisters, and use a good anti-fouling paint. Since you will be painting the hull bottom, you might consider repairing the blisters w/ epoxy. Gelcoat & fiberglass won't stick to it very well, if at all, but w/ sufficient prep, the anti-fouling paint will, and you need to paint anyway. Note that there are few if any FOREVER A/F paints. They all require minimal regular inspection, and 1 of the above references suggests the use of a contrasting color A/F base paint, that when visible, indicates the time to thoroughly inspect or re-apply the A/F paint. Both google & the iboat's advanced search would have quickly given you the same info....... Welcome to the iboat's dry dock.... Where in Tn? I am currently outside Knoxville, for a family funeral.......

Cobia Houseboat

Cobia Houseboat 1969

24' 1969 Cobia Houseboat with rebuilt 1983 OMC engine & outdrive.I guess we will be selling the houseboat we were planning on keeping forever. We have owned it for 8 years and love this boat but we can't afford two. We got a good deal on a much larger one and that is what my wife wants. So now I have another boat to build after spending thousands of $$$ and a few years building this one just right. Oh well. Such is life. Runs great, everything works. Fully self contained. The possibilities are endless. Never in salt water. 8' wide by 25' long total, weight is apx. 6500 lbs, 8000 w/trailer. Fiberglass hull & top. No mooring fees. This boat is trailer-able so you can take it anywhere. Could be used as a live aboard. Can be pulled by a 3/4 ton PU. Comes with a wrap around canvas enclosure for the front deck that we have never used. This is just some of what I've done & we spared no expense. Everything is marine grade or of the highest quality. There is so much more but I can't remember everything right now, I'll update as I remember:1969 Cobia Houseboat with all major work done since 2010. I pulled the old V6 out out & replaced it with a fuel efficient later model 1983 4 cylinder 120HP OMC (Chevy-Iron Duke) engine that I rebuilt completely. Horse power was almost the same. It wasn't built to go fast but it does put out a great wake for wake surfing! Engine & outdrive have less than 50 hours since installation. New marine grade carpet on front & back deck a couple months ago.If you would like more pictures or if you would like to go for a test drive please let me know. 2012: Rebuilt 1983 120HP 4cyl OMC that had less than 300 hours to start with: ($4500) Rings, bearings, gaskets, seals, cylinders honed, Head rebuiltNew marine carburetorRblt starterRblt alternatorNew voltage regulatorNew marine electric fuel pump w/oil pressure cut-offNew Mallory electronic ignition-no points to adjustPlugs, wires, hoses, Oil & filters>Reconditioned 1983 OMC 400 outdrive with: New gaskets & seals including transom boot/sealNew water pump assemblyNew shift cableNew lift motor & solenoidsNew gear oil2012: Newer gauge panel and complete new custom wiring harness w/new fuse panels2013: New throttle/shift assembly with new cables ($600)180w solar panel & controller ($500) It runs everything all day & the batteries run things at night. Marine units are more expensive because they have to be able to operate at up to a 30 degree angle ($1600)New marine grade rubber floor covering ($400)2011: All cushions recovered2012: Kenwood MP3 stereo system w/marine speakers ($300)New LED lights for less power draw / 2-12v fans inside to keep you cool in hot weather.3 new automatic bilge pumps & hoses. ($200)2010: Weber Propane BBQ, propane stove, 10 gal fresh water tank, new sink & faucet, mahogany counter top, new 12v water pump with new hoses & plumbing. ($800)Replaced entire floor & framing, rebuilt both side walls w/new framing & fiberglass panels. ($2000)New custom cut tempered tinted glass & window channel seals in all 4 side windows ($1500)12v water pump on the back deck for rinsing things off w/lake water.Everything runs on 12v, no shore power needed for anything. 8' steel ramp w/hand winch on the back deck for shore access. Back up, drop the ramp and tie it off and you are all set for camping or fishing. Don't have to set up tents ever again. Throw your groceries in the boat and you are off. Fold the table down and set the captains chair on the front deck & a queen size air mattress fits perfectly on the floor or sleep on the top deck. Lots of storage. Great on fuel. Cruises about 10 mph @ 2000 rpm. Maxes out @ 3000rpm. Not a race boat. A real nice cruiser. Very stable tri-hull. No water, fuel or oil leaks. Runs excellent. 20gal stainless steel fuel tank w/new hoses & fill spout. Tank was removed & cleaned. It is not perfect. We used it all the time and really enjoyed this boat. I will never get out what I have in it but the fun we had is priceless. Trailer: New tires & rims from Les Schwab w/less than 500 miles. New heavy duty hubs, bearings, brake drums & electric marine brakes. I extended the tongue 30" for more maneuverability. Set up for 1 person to load/unload boat.

Add new question to the seller

Manitowoc is home to the most completely restored WWII submarine, the USS Cobia. Here's how it ended up in the city.

Uss cobia arrived in manitowoc from milwaukee on aug. 17, 1970..

In this file photo, people board the USS Cobia in Manitowoc for self-guided tours with submarine veterans.

Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company built 28 of the best built submarines in the U.S. Navy. However, the sub floating in the Manitowoc River for the last 54 years was not built here.

So, why is USS Cobia here and not a Manitowoc-built submarine?

After World War II, the U.S. had a surplus of boats in its “mothball” or reserve fleet. These vessels were sold to other countries, used as training vessels or scrapped.

In 1956, a law was passed authorizing the secretary of the Navy to donate ships to states, cities and nonprofit organizations for memorial purposes.

That same year, local submarine veterans, many of whom had returned to Manitowoc after serving on Manitowoc boats, formed the Manitowoc Chapter of U.S. Submarine Veterans of WWII.

In between reminiscences of wartime stories was talk about bringing a submarine back to Manitowoc.

Related: Manitowoc's Wisconsin Maritime Museum names next director

By 1967, the group realized there weren’t many Manitowoc boats left. Only six remained, and they were scheduled to be scrapped in the next few years.

So, in 1968 the Manitowoc Submariners Memorial Association was formed with the goal of bringing a sub back to Manitowoc.

To apply for a ship donation, the group had to secure a temporary and safe berth and show continued funding for maintenance and a permanent berth.

By this time, they had three options: USS Rasher in California (too far away), USS Cobia in Milwaukee (not built in Manitowoc) or USS Redfin in Baltimore.

Rasher and Redfin were scheduled to be disposed of in 1971, so the group set out to raise the funds necessary to bring Redfin home while also working to establish a new maritime museum to accompany the submarine.

They held a membership drive and sold custom-made Jim Beam “Operation Redfin” decanters to raise the money.

Unfortunately, the Navy decided to move up its deadline and scrap Redfin in 1970, cutting a year off the timeline to raise enough funds to acquire the sub.

It was nearly impossible to raise $200,000 in just a few months.

In addition to the lack of funds, Redfin was also leaking and would need to be dry docked for repairs before it could be towed here. This meant it would cost nearly $250,000 to repair and tow Redfin to Manitowoc.

Undeterred, the sub vets decided to take a closer look at USS Cobia. Cobia had served as a training vessel in Milwaukee since 1959 and would only require towing costs to acquire.

Scheduled to be stricken from the Naval register in June 1969, Cobia was still in excellent condition and had very few alterations after the war — unlike Redfin, which looked nothing like its WWII configuration.

Since the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company initially used blueprints from the Electric Boat Company in Connecticut, where Cobia was built, the sub was identical to the Gato-class boats built in Manitowoc.

Related: Historic photographs are a bridge through time. These 3 show Manitowoc's Eighth Street bridge across 140 years.

The choice was simple: $250,000 for Redfin or $20,000 for Cobia.

USS Cobia arrived in Manitowoc on Aug. 17, 1970, and was transferred to the Manitowoc Submariners Memorial Association during a dedication ceremony on Aug. 23.

Today, Cobia is a National Historic Landmark and an International Submariners Memorial, and is considered to be the most completely restored WWII submarine on display. All thanks to a small group of dedicated veterans and their determination to keep Cobia and a worthy memorial to the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company and all submariners.

In September 2025, USS Cobia is scheduled to be dry docked for routine underwater hull inspections and cleaning. For more information or to donate to the project, visit wisconsinmaritime.org .

Karen Duvalle is submarine curator at Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc.

What Cobia Owners are Saying

cobia mini yacht

Cobia 320 powered with 425’s runs hard. Minimal bow rise, runs flat. Packed with a lot of features at a good price point compared to some of the “premium “ brands.

– Robert K. 5/20/2024

We are so glad we chose to go to the 32, the space and features are perfect . Totally surprised how well it handles in the water, much better than smaller boats we’ve owned.

– Mark K. 1/6/2024

I would highly recommend a new Cobia Center Console for any family that wants the versatility for cruising as we as serious fishing. We have put over 25 hours on our new boat in just 3 months.
