Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Shallow draft: 6.0’

oyster 56 sailboat data

Design number: 110 Year: 1996

The Oyster 56 is a serious sea-going yacht proven over many thousands of miles and with an established track record as one of the most successful yachts in Oyster’s history. Many live-aboard owners confirm that she is easily handled by just two crew members but is spacious enough for six to eight people to cruise in comfort. The single wheel helm aft has winches close to hand, so she can be sailed short-handed if necessary.

With this model, our mission was to design a world-class cruising yacht that would epitomise the features of the Oyster heritage and evolve them to create an ocean-going yacht which appeals to blue water cruising enthusiasts. The Humphreys team uses extensive tank testing when designing our racing yachts and the concept of the 56’s keel has benefited from this experience. Her stylish, well-balanced profile and generous sail area make the best use of the yacht’s stability due to the low centre of gravity bulb keel.

In designing the cockpit of the Oyster 56 — a focal point of its design — we commissioned professional ergonomic studies from the University of Loughborough’s Department of Ergonomics. The result sets new standards in comfort, seaworthiness and safety both at sea and in harbour, and makes for relaxed entertaining and socialising.

The Oyster 56 features a sloop rig with fully battened mainsail, a walk-in machinery room alongside the 160hp engine and each individual vessel is configured to match her owner’s priorities and requirements.

Oyster 56 1

Review of Oyster 56

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 643.0 liter fresh water capacity.

The Oyster 56 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.

The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 2.39 - 2.49 meter (7.84 - 8.14 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Oyster 56 is typically equipped with an inboard Yanmar 4LE-TE diesel engine at 110 hp (81 kW). Calculated max speed is about 7.1 knots

The fuel tank has a capacity of 719.0 liters (189 US gallons, 158 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Oyster 56 is 1.68, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 9.2 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Oyster 56 is about 478 kg/cm, alternatively 2678 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 478 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 2678 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 15.26

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 79m 2 (850 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

Catalog excerpts

OYSTER 56 - 1

THE MOST SUCCESSFUL OYSTER EVER. No yacht of this size could possibly reach hull numbers we into the 70s without having something pretty special about it. The Oyster 56 proves the point admirably. She has not merely established herself as the most successful yacht in Oyster's history but has generated a whole new set of standards. Make no mistake, this is a world-class yacht designed specifically to appeal to the more adventurous blue water cruising yachtsman - and destined to remain as a benchmark in her class well into the future.

OYSTER 56 - 2

OR SIMPLY LOVE CRUISING THE OCEANS. The Oyster 56 is the first yacht, thanks to our project work with Loughborough University, offering a cockpit that has been the focus of genuine ergonomie design. Many boast that the attributes of 'ergonomics' are present in their own designs, but few can support those claims with true scientific research. It is precisely such detailed research and planning that has resulted in unprecedented levels of comfort that make relaxing and entertaining on board the Oyster 56 a true pleasure. Comforting too, that this luxury comes without compromising any of the...

OYSTER 56 - 3

HER UNMATCHED FLEXIBILTY AND ALL-ROUND CAPABILITY HAVE ENDEARED HER TO OWNERS AROUND THE WORLD. CAD-optimised hull lines have produced a yacht that is well balanced and very fast. The G5 deck upgrade delivers a stylish, well-balanced, outboard profile, whilst the generous sail plan makes best use of the stability derived from the low CG bulb keel and the high form stability of her hull lines. Her class-leading performance under power and sail is demonstrated by the ease with which she won her class in the ARC and more significantly perhaps, her Cruising Class 1 win at Antigua Sailing Week,...

WHAT WE SAY

Broker's comments, price just reduced.

Quintessentially Oyster, and one of our most successful models built, the 56 is a fantastic ocean cruiser, compact and agile to be easily handled by two, whilst also being versatile enough to accommodate a host of guests, and even crew, in comfort with ease.

Piperita, built in 2000, is a family-owned yacht that has been handed down through the generations from father to son. Lightly used, never chartered, and never having crossed the Atlantic, Piperita has very low hours to the engine and generator. With a specification perfectly equipped for short-handed sailing and effortless onboard handling, Piperita is easy in and out of port. Featuring an electric passerelle, remote windlass control, davits, outboard crane, bow thruster, new domestic batteries, and a great solar setup to name a few, she has a number of unique features that make her an attractive bluewater cruiser.

Below deck, typical of all Oyster’s, Piperita has an abundance of space, both functional and practical to fulfil a multitude of uses. With seven berths in four cabins, the forth converting conveniently to a workshop, Piperita is classically presented in teak, with warming light blue upholstery throughout. A home from home experience with the benefits of being able to change the scenery, Piperita is a great yacht for all uses.

Recently benefitting from out of the water works including underwater hull blasting and re-antifouling, all seacocks and anodes replaced, plus works to the engine, she is in the process of being upgraded.

Lying in Trapani, Sicily, and just a short sail from the stunning Egadi and Aeolian Islands, Piperita is in a fantastic location. Early viewing recommended.
