Landyachtz Hawgs Plow King Longboard Wheels

  • GREAT FOR CRUISING - Coming in at 76a durometer, these wheels are nice and soft. When you hit bumps and cracks in the pavement, these wheels absorb some of the energy from the bump to give you a nice cushy ride.
  • SLIDEABLE - Although these wheels are soft, they are nice and slidey. When freeriding and sliding at higher speeds, these wheels won't kill too much speed.

Landyachtz Dinghy Review

October 9, 2021

Landaychtz dinghy review honey island graphic

This week’s article is a Landyachtz Dinghy review. This is easily one of the most popular cruisers on the market, and one of the first boards many own. However, it doesn’t have the greatest of reputations amongst the “core” crowd. Check it out below to find out what I think.

Table of Contents

  • Length : 28.5inches
  • Width : 8inches
  • Construction : 7plys of Maple
  • Concave: Mellow
  • Shape : Single kick
  • Gritpape : Fine Landyachtz grip
  • Trucks : Bear 105mm/7inch TKP trucks
  • Wheels : 63mm, 78a Fatty Hawgs
  • Bearings : Bear Spaceballs Bearings
  • Accessories : 1/4inch riser
  • Graphic : Honey Island

Big thanks to SkateboardersHQ for helping me out with this board!

And yes! I am a sponsored Landyachtz rider. That will not affect the review. I will be unbiased. I will be honest and critical where I need to be.

Is the Landyachtz Dinghy good (summary)?

Yes, it is a good board, I’ve really enjoyed using mine. However, one or two things aren’t the best. And whilst it does a lot of things well, it suffers when it comes to being focused and great for one discipline – for example, tricks or sliding. Truly a jack of all trades, master of none sort of board.

Landyachtz Dinghy review Honey Island

And at the end of the day, it is simply a mini-cruiser – it’s been designed with portability as being its main strength and greatest fatures. Whilst a mini-cruiser is excellent for somethings, it isn’t the best for others.

One thing is clear though, this board is a lot of fun.

Check out my guide to the best mini cruisers

The Dinghy is super nimble and agile

The Dinghy reacts quickly to your input and changes direction on a dime. The bushings in the Bear TKP trucks are surprisingly soft, and this allows you to get the trucks to quickly shift direction.

However, how much you can turn and how quickly feels limited by the wheels – they start to slip when you turn too quickly. The Chubby Hawgs are good wheels, but they lose grip if you dive too quickly into the turn and the board wants to slip out from under you. I can see the Plow Kings (which come on the Dinghy Turbo King and Turbo) to be better suited for gripping turns and changing direction quickly – slaloming between objects and that type of thing.

If you have no desire to slide or just want to dive into and take those turns with confidence, the Dinghy Turbo or Turbo King are the better options for you – they come with the grippier Plow King wheels.

The trucks are quite “loose feeling”

As I said earlier, the bushings are quite soft. Most people are not going to feel totally comfortable on the board with the bushings the way they are. I recommend you tighten the kingpin down a little bit (maybe a full turn or two), to give you a slightly stiffer and easier to control ride. You’ll also feel a bit more comfortable and confident.

If you weigh about 130lbs and less, I expect that you’ll be happy with how the bushings feel out of the box.

Check out my my indpeth guide to the best mini cruiser longboards here .

You don’t get wheel bite with the Dinghy

As loose and as soft as the bushings are, you don’t get wheel bite at all on the Dinghy. At least I didn’t haha. If you’re heavier than 150lbs (or 70kg), which is how much I weigh, you MIGHT get bite on the setup. I don’t seeing it being an issue for most people to be honest.

The no wheelbite thing is because of the tall risers and the wheel wells drilled into the deck.

The turning is smooth

I didn’t expect the bushings to be as soft as they are on the Bear TKPs. Despite this, the TKPs turn smoothly. However, the TKPs tend to “flop” into the turn. By this I mean they tend to lean more than they turn.

I didn’t enjoy this flop to turn feel, and it actually made riding the Dinghy not that enjoyable. I had to make some slight changes to make it feel perfect.

In order to get them to turn more than they lean, I flipped the washer on the front truck, and tightened the back truck a little bit. This gave the front top bushings more freedom and allowed the truck to turn more – atleast that’s how it felt.

After doing this, the board had a forward biased turning. It felt more stable, had more control and it was easier to dive in and out of turns. I really liked how it felt. I recommend you do the same to your Dinghy.

The Landyachtz Dinghy is comfortable to stand on

At 8inches in width and 28inches in length, the Dinghy doesn’t have the most room to stand on. Thankfully, the concave is mellow and doesn’t get in the way of your feet at all. The concave features are near non-existent and aren’t worth mentioning at all tbh.

Landyachtz Dinghy concave

So yeah the Dinghy is comfortable to stand on and it is a comfortable board to ride.

Not comfortable for long rides

However, like all mini cruisers, after about 10minutes your feet start to ache and get tired. Mini Cruisers aren’t the best for skating longer than 10minutes – they’re small, agile and because of this your feet have to work hard to keep the boards going straight. It gets tiring quickly.

If you’re skating longer than 10minutes or long distances, wider, longer and lower boards like the Landyachtz Drop Cat are gonna be better suited for you.

It’s easy to push

The Dinghy is super easy to push. The board is rather lightweight and the wheels are small. Smaller wheels tend to accelerate quicker, and the Chubby Hawgs get up to speed fairly quickly.

It’s not the best for skating longer distances

However, whilst it does accelerate quickly and is easy to push, the wheels don’t hold on to their speed very well and don’t coast for very long – simply because of their 63mm size.

They do still coast a bit, but I found myself pushing quite a bit to keep the boards speed up.

For longer distances, bigger 70mm+ wheels are more desirable. They have a higher top speed and coast for longer.

Is the kicktail usable?

The kicktail is very usable. It’s great to use when going up and down curbs and when picking up the board.

Can you do tricks on the Landya€chtz Dinghy?

Yes, but not really. I could do Ollies, Pop shuvits and one or two easy tricks, but more complex things were harder to do. For example, I couldn’t kickflip the Dinghy very easily. I didn’t feel comfortable doing so or even trying.

Landyachtz Dinghy ollie

Can you learn tricks on the Dinghy?

You might be able to, but because the Dinghy is small and has relatively heavy wheels – the Chubby Hawgs are considerably wider, taller and meatier than proper skateboard wheels. There is gonna be a steeper learning curve. In fact, some might find it too difficult.

If you already know how to do skateboard tricks, then it is easy to apply them to the Dinghy. But if you don’t, learning is a tough task. If you want to learn tricks on a cruiser, an all-around hybrid like the Landyachtz ATV or the Stoked Ride Shop cruiser would be better options.

Can you slide on the Landyachtz Dinghy?

Yes you can. The Chubby Hawgs break out into slides pretty smoothly. I do think they have a break in period though, because at the beginning of trying to slide them they weren’t super smooth, but they got smoother the more I tried.

They do honk a lot though, and that might be an issue for some.

Landyachtz Dinghy toeside slide

Can you learn to slide on the Dinghy?

Yes and no. Again, the Dinghy is not going to be the best for learning to slide mainly because of it’s small size and really just how it rides. If you choose it to learn to slide on it you’re going to have a very steep learning curve.

There are better options for learning to slide and I recommend you get those instead. You’ll have an easier time learning.

Is the Landyachtz Dinghy good for downhill skating

No, not really. It can handle some light hills and you likely can take it up to 20mph, but beyond that you’re asking for trouble. If you want to skate fast, get a board built for it.

And it’s not that the Dinghy specifically is bad for skating down hills. It’s just that mini cruisers are inherently bad for skating fast and speed. Their tiny wheelbases, bushings, TKP trucks and narrow sizes just make them awful for skating fast. You’re likely going to wobble out.

Yes I know I skate mine fast and I know other riders do so too. But I skate downhill primarily and I’m used to speed – I’ve been doing this for the last 4 years. The average rider or beginner can not do the same and you likely will get hurt.

Is the Landyachtz Dinghy good for learning to skate?

Yes and no. Mini Cruisers are generally not beginner friendly boards. They react a lot to your input and this isn’t good for a beginner finding their balance on a skateboard. So yeah, they have a slightly steeper learning curve.

But yeah with some effort you can learn on them. Of course there are sharper tools for the job out there and a board like the Drop Cat 33 is gonna be more beginner friendly. It is more stable, easier to push and easier to balance on.

However, for kids, I’d say they make excellent beginner boards. The Dinghy is the perfect size for kids.

What changes did I make to mine?

The only changes I made was tightening the kingpin a little bit and flipping the top washer in front so that the front truck turned more. I kept it pretty much stock otherwise.

Landyachtz Dinghy front bear truck

This is what the back truck looked like (the picture below). Just to illustrate the difference for ya.

Are the components high-quality?

The components on the Dinghy are great. The trucks, wheels and pretty much everything else is high-quality.

Are the trucks good?

The trucks are great. They have a smooth, controllable turn. They don’t suddenly twitch or fight you to stay straight.

They come with high-quality bushings and pivots – which aid in that smooth, controllable feeling. Finally they are pretty strong and are made with heat treated aluminum, with any unnecessary material cut away. The trucks have an excellent finish and look great,

For the technical TKP people, I think Bear trucks are built more around cruising and sliding stuff, rather than behaving like the average TKP. Where the average TKP would be good for skate park stuff … I think … idk. I have limited experience with TKPs if I’m being honest.

Bear 105mm tkp trucks for Landyachtz Dinghy

One issue though is how they turn. As I highlighted before, they sort of flop into the turn. Flipping the top washer one the front truck solved this though.

Are the wheels good?

I was surprised by the Chubby Hawgs! These wheels roll fast and pick up speed quickly. They also providing a comfortable ride and roll over cracks, pebbles and other muck in the road fairly well. Pretty smooth wheels I gotta say.

Chubby hawgs 63mm for the Landyachtz Dinghy review

Pebble avoidance system

Because the wheels are large (63mm) and soft (78a), they can roll over pebbles and cracks with ease. A big pebble will stop you though, but if you got enough speed/momentum and weight the board properly (shift like 80% of your weight to the back) you can power through almost anything.

The bearings are decent too

The Bear Spaceballs are great bearings that roll smoothly and quietly. Starting out, they leak a bit of oil, but this is just the excess lubricant leaking out. I recommend you wipe them down after this happens or your bearings and wheels will get dirty. Other than that, they work great. No issues so far.

Bear spaceball bearings

Is the price of the Dinghy fair?

You’re looking to pay anything from $130 to $160 for a Dinghy. It is quite expensive, especially for a mini-cruiser. However, you are getting a complete that is pretty great straight out of the box.

Other mini cruiser completes I’ve tried have had one or two things wrong with them and they made me want to change or modify them slightly. Though I did change the washer configuration, I haven’t had to buy anything for the Dinghy.

And given I expect the Dinghy to last me about two years and more, I think the price is reasonable. This board is an investment that gives me enjoy, allows me to have fun and gets me from place to place. I use it fairly frequently (like almost every other day) so it’s worth it in my eyes.

It might not be worth it if you don’t use it as frequently as I do tbh. And I’m also of the school of thought of “cheap is expensive” and “buy once or buy twice” so …

However, not everyone has $130+ to spend on a cruiser, and if you’re part of that group, below are some alternatives.

Where to buy the Landyachtz Dinghy?

You can buy the Landyachtz Dinghy here on the Stoked ride shop .

Or you can buy the Landyachtz Dinghy here at Amazon.com.

Landyachtz Dinghy alternatives

  • Stoked ride shop complete – great budget cruiser with great components about $90. Check it out here on the Stoked ride shop website.
  • Fireball cruiser -Great complete about $110. Check it out here on the Stoked ride shop website.
  • Magneto mini cruiser – budget cruiser, poor components but only costs about $70. Check it out here on Amazon.com.

What I didn’t like about the Dinghy?

There’s not much I didn’t like about the Dinghy. Of course, there’s a lot I don’t generally like about mini cruisers and there’s a lot I can say about that. But as a mini cruiser, the Dinghy is great.

One thing I didn’t like was how the trucks turned. But with the light modification I did, it wasn’t an issue anymore.

What do I think the Dinghy is best for (best use)?

  • Best for skates under 10minutes long. After 5-10minutes, the Dinghy and other mini cruisers tire you out. You have to actively work to keep them going straight and have to also work hard to keep the moving.
  • Not the best for longer distances – best for rides less than 3miles/5km long.
  • Best for short skates. Eg. When you get off the bus and are going to work.
  • Excellent for messing around on.
  • Excellent for storing and being portable.
  • Not the best for tricks, sliding, downhill or going fast.
  • Great for kids.

Landyachtz Dinghy honey island details

Who should get the Dinghy?

  • A kid wanting a beginner board.
  • Someone looking for a comfortable mini cruiser.
  • If you’re looking for a portable, easy to store board.
  • If you want a board that is fun to mess around on when you have a few minutes to skate each day.
  • You need a transportation option to quickly get you over a mile or so.
  • You want a board to quickly get you across campus.
  • If you want to buy someone an awesome present etc.

Who shouldn’t get the Dinghy?

The Dinghy isn’t right for you if:

  • You primarily want to do downhill skating, tricks, or sliding.
  • Learning any of the above is what you want to do with it.
  • You want a board to commute over 3miles/5km with.
  • You have huuge feet – I have size 9.5US/10UK feet and the Dinghy is borderline comfortable. Anyone with bigger feet might not be comfortable.

What y’all think? Is the Dinghy the right board for you?

The Dinghy is a pretty great board and I can say I’m happy with it. I really had my doubts – mainly because of the influence of other riders, but having tried the real thing I’m stoked. Of course, it does have its limitations, but hopefully, I’ve done a good job of highlighting what it’s best for and what its not good for.

Big thanks to my SkateboardsHQ for lending me the board and big thanks to all my patrons for the support – Jed, SuperbadJuju, Mowgii, Bryan, Andrew, Jan, Jay, Owen, Samil, Daniel, Alex, Kasajja, Leah, Helge, Jackson, DeLacoste and Justin. I couldn’t write articles like this without you guys’ support. I used the money from my Patreon to buy this grip.

Nice review! Have you tried Pilsner or Pocket Rocket from Arbor, former is of similar size as dinghy but with 129 Paris street trucks. Would love to know what you think of it.

I haven’t tried it, but it is a great board. Great components too. It should ride good 🙂

Landyachtz rally cat vs turbo king dinghy vs pantheon pranayama.

Update May 2021: My full review for Landyachtz Rally Cat is up

These are the new skateboards in my collection lately, namely Landyachtz Rally Cat Metal, Landyachtz Turbo King and Pantheon Pranayama.

What has these got to do with art? Well, I'm using them to move around more easily to go places to sketch.

I've been using electric skateboards since 2016. Unfortunately, currently in Singapore, electric skateboards can only be used in very limited number of places, basically only at the Park Connectors, so it's difficult to use them for end-to-end commute. Personal Mobility Device (PMD) used to be so popular that they were misused so now there is so much regulation that it can almost be considered a ban.

Anyway, I'm writing this post to share more information about these skateboards, cruiser boards or longboards or whatever you call them.

If you just what a quick list of pros and cons, just scroll to the bottom.

landyachtz plow king

It's a 34.7-inch deck with 8.9-inch width and a wheelbase of 18.2 inches . The stock comes with 130mm Polar Bear trucks and 63mm 78a Fatty Hawgs and Bear Spaceball bearings .

Mine's not stock. I bought the deck secondhand with new 63mm 78a Fatty Hawgs wheels and Bones Reds bearings. I actually wanted to fix up the board myself but I can't find any secondhand trucks online or know what is a good skateboarding truck. Which was why I went to the local skateboard shop Longboard Love Board Shop . Big thanks to Barry and Jonathan for explaining and recommending various trucks.

I had initially bought some Caliber skateboard trucks for S$110 and when I tested them on the Rally Cat, it wasn't able to do tight turns I need for using the board in the city. I was told that longboard trucks would work better for the tighter turns and was recommended the Paris Savant trucks, S$265. It is definitely expensive but I don't mind expensive because I know I'll be skateboarding for a very long time so it's worth the investment.

The Rally Cat with the Paris Savant 165mm trucks are quite zippy and responsive but not that zippy compared to the Turbo King Dinghy with the 70mm Plow King wheels and 14.6-inch wheelbase . That's exactly the type of responsiveness I'm looking for. In the city, there are a lot of junctions so you need to do lots of tight turns and now I finally have a board, well, two boards that can do those easily.

The 34.5-inch Rally Cat is significantly longer than the 28.5-inch Turbo King but it's only slightly heavier so it's still very portable . And because of the extra length, I can actually rest it on the floor of the train/bus while commuting. With the Turbo King, I had to carry it or find a wall to let it lean on.

The difference between the 2020 Rally Cat (mine) and the 2018 Rally Cat is the smaller 8.9-inch width vs 9.75, and the wheelbase 18.2-inch vs 19-inch. The smaller width makes it deck much smaller, more compact, and easier to bring around. The larger width gives you more stability but with the Paris Savant 165mm trucks, I can say that it's very stable too. Default Bear trucks on the Rally Cat is 155mm.

landyachtz plow king

So it seems the Polar Bear 130mm trucks that come stock with the Rally Cat is 50mm in height and the Paris Savant is 62.5mm. I just discovered this on Reddit. So it looks like I could have gone even lower. But since I've already bought the Paris Savant trucks, I'll just stick with it.

landyachtz plow king

Those Paris Savant trucks look gorgeous. The curves are so much smoother than other trucks with angular designs.

landyachtz plow king

Both school of thoughts have merit. The important thing to know is, if you spend a lot only to find out a month or two later that you're not really into skateboarding, then it's too bad. It's the same with people buying guitars only to realise that it takes too much time and effort to learn so it's easier to just let the guitar sit around as display.

I'm saying this because the Landyachtz Rally Cat is not cheap. Here in Singapore, the 2020 model cost S$425 retail (or US$189). Yeah, there's a markup in Singapore, which was why I wanted to look for secondhand ones. In the end, I saved on buying a secondhand deck, but overall spent more because the Paris Savant trucks was $265. It's worth the money though because I know I will be using this for a long time. The normal Landyachtz Dinghy is way more affordable. Turbo King is more expensive.

landyachtz plow king

The 72mm 78a Plow King wheels on the Turbo King are quite bouncy. Contact patch is 65mm and can go over rough city roads easily, except for off road terrain. For some reason, the 63mm 78a Fatty Hawgs wheels are not as bouncy. Maybe because the urethane isn't as thick. Contact patch is 50mm and is good for city roads too. I'm just not sure how stable the stock 130mm Polar Bear trucks are compared to the 165mm Paris Savant. But the 105mm Polar Bear trucks on the Turbo King aren't that stable so more care is needed when riding.

I don't do any skateboard tricks so I can't say if you can ollie or not with these two Landyachtz boards.

landyachtz plow king

So I wanted a board that's lower and less tiring to push and discovered the Pantheon Pranayama. This board has a double drop design with the trucks mounted above deck and a 1.3-inch drop. With the Landyachtz Rally Cat, I was still able to put my shoe underneath the deck. With the Pantheon Pranayama, the deck is so low I can't even put the toe section of my shoe underneath. Stepping on the Pantheon Pranayama is like stepping onto a train.

Riding the Pantheon Pranayama is like riding a magic carpet because it's so close to the ground. I've been using such tall decks for years that it feels so unreal when I'm on the Pantheon Pranayama. It's so easy to push. I barely have to bend my knees.

The Pantheon Pranayama is made with 9 ply maple , comes with Paris 149mm TKP trucks and huge 85mm Seismic Speed Vents wheels . It's 31.375 inches long and 9.25 inches wide with a wheelbase of 26 inches .

Pantheon Pranayama takes slightly more strength to push start but once it gets going, it was able to maintain its speed for much longer, meaning you don't have to push as much. And even if you push, it doesn't require much effort. This board is good for going long distances where there aren't many starts and stops. That means this board is not suitable for use in city areas because there will be lots of road junctions.

The wheelbase of 28-inches is significantly wider compared to the Rally Cat's 19-inch and Turbo King's 14.6-inch. You'll need a larger turning radius. It's like turning a bus vs turning a Mini Cooper. That's another reason why it's not good for use in the city.

The 85mm wheels are huge and can go over almost anything. They also have incredible grip on the ground. It's incredibly difficult to kick the board away just by kicking the wheels when I want to change the position of the board. This board is incredibly stable.

The Pantheon Pranayama is also noticeably heavier compared to the Rally Cat and Turbo King.

I use the Pantheon Pranayama when I know I'll be traveling long distances. But my main commuter boards are the the Rally Cat and Turbo King.

Here's the pros and cons lists for the three boards:

Landyachtz Rally Cat (2020) (US $189) + Slightly easier to push due to rocker design + Significantly more pricey than standard Landyachtz Dinghy + Can be as responsive as Dinghy when fitted with the right trucks + 34.5-inch length makes it possible to rest the board on ground while commuting + 63mm Fatty Hawgs wheels good enough for city roads, asphalt + Even though it's longer but weighs about the same as the Dinghy + Stable ride with wider 8.9" board + Can kick up the board and it will be at the right height for my hands - I wish the deck could be even lower

Landyachtz Turbo King (US $179) + Zippy and responsive + Compact and lightweight, easy to bring around + More expensive compared to standard Dinghy ($139) + 72mm Plow King wheels with 65mm contact patch great for city roads, asphalt - 8-inch board and shorter trucks makes this less stable than Rally Cat

Pantheon Pranayama (US $130) + Extremely stable + Almost effortless to push. Great for long distance commute + Wide wheelbase requires large turning radius. It can't make tight turns + Designed such that wheels will hit instead of the deck (front, back and sides) + Large 85mm wheels go over almost anything + Large wheels maintain speed much better — less pushing required + Like riding on magic carpet - Heavier - Not kick tail so you have to bend to lift it up. It's too heavy to kick up anyway - Not good for commute with lots of starts, stops, tight turns

Update after 5 months

I sold the Pantheon Pranayama. It was sad to part ways with it but I just wasn't using it enough.

Thankfully I bought the Pranayama secondhand so I didn't suffer much loss. Finding the right skateboard is kinda personal. Sometimes you won't know whether you like a skateboard or whether it fits in your routine until you actually use it. So it may be a better idea to buy a used skateboard first to try. It's can cost more if you buy a brand new skateboard only to find out that it's not suitable for you, or you just don't like it for whatever reasons.

I sold the Pantheon Pranayama for two reasons. It's heavier than the Rally Cat and there's no way to pop it up so that I can pick it up easier. The Pranayama is not that heavy but is still noticeably heavier than the Rally Cat. If I have to carry additional things with me, backpack or groceries, I won't use the Pranayama. And not being able to pop up the board is inconvenient.

So now I'm down to just the Rally Cat that I use maybe 90% of the time, and Dinghy Turbo King.

I've added a few more pros and cons to the list.

The Rally Cat is noticeably more stable compared to the DInghy Turbo King because of the wider trucks and the wider 8.9-inch vs 8-inch board. The Dingy Turbo King is more zippy and the board is not as wide, so it can be a bit unstable at times, at high speeds, and at low speed when turning.

Another thing I like about the Rally Cat is with the kick tail you can pop it up and it will be at just the right height for my hands. I'm 1.78m and if I do that with the Dinghy, I still have to bend down to pick it up. I realised I do have to pick up my board quite frequently.

E.g. A trip from home - gate - bus stop - train station - crowd - destination would mean I have to pick it up six times. It's less convenient with Dinghy. Very inconvenient with the Pantheon Pranayama.

For short 10 minute commute, I'll still go with the Dinghy Turbo King. For anything longer, I go with the Rally Cat. But if I have to carry heavy items, e.g. backpack or groceries, then I'll use the Dinghy.

Compared to the Langyachtz Dugout The Landyachtz Dugout is 31.5-inch length and 8.5-inch wide . It's a larger Dinghy which means it's going to be more stable. The longer board also allows you to pop it up to carry easily. Downside will be the extra weight but it's not going to be that much heavier.

Compared to the Langyachtz Tugboat The Landyachtz Tugboat is 30-inch length and 9-inch wide . The wider board will make it more stable than even the Dugout, and noticeably more stable than the Dinghy. You can still pop up the board with its kick tail. I'm 1.78m so I may have to bend down just a bit (no issues). Compared to the Rally Cat, the main difference will the the height above ground. Rally Cat will be lower and offer a less tiring ride especially if commute is long. Tugboat will be lighter than the Rally Cat since it's shorter.

If you're already thinking of Tugboat, might as well go for the Rally Cat unless you want something shorter. It's 34.7 vs 30 inches.

I don't think I'll be getting any more skateboards since the Dinghy Turbo King and Rally Cat pretty much covers all the possible scenarios, city or urban commute, in which I can use them. I don't do long distance or downhill so getting a long longboard doesn't make sense.

Where to buy

Landyachtz is a popular brand and can be found in many skateboard shops. Not too sure about Pantheon longboards though, but do search online.

Definitely search Amazon too (affiliate link).

The house on King Road: A look at the Moscow home where four U of I students were killed

Idaho Statesman logo

Sally Krutzig and Kevin Fixler, Idaho Statesman

Back of Moscow house

( Idaho Statesman ) — At 1122 King Road in Moscow sits a gray six-bedroom, three-bathroom house that continues to be the source of significant national attention.

Known as a student rental, the home’s most recent tenants were a group of six University of Idaho undergraduates who signed a 12-month lease that began on June 5, according to the property management firm that oversees the home.

Three of the student renters would not live to see the end of their lease.

The tenants were Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, Bethany Funke and Dylan Mortensen, as well as an unnamed sixth person on the lease.

RELATED | Who were the four students killed at the University of Idaho? A look into their lives

In the early morning hours of Sunday, Nov. 13, Mogen, Goncalves, Kernodle and Kernodle’s boyfriend, Ethan Chapin, were stabbed to death in the house. Police found two bodies on the second floor and two bodies on the third floor, but have not released which victims were discovered where.

Mortensen and Funke were on the first floor of the home and went unharmed. Police have said they were not involved in the killings.

Nearly six weeks have passed, and law enforcement still has not named a suspect in the quadruple homicide.

The Idaho Statesman used photos from rental listings and documents submitted by former owners to the city of Moscow to explore the layout of the King Road house. Depictions of the floors are approximations created by the Statesman based on that information.

Just north of the home is the university’s new Greek Row , where many fraternity and sorority activities take place. That proximity meant the area was particularly popular among those involved in U of I Greek life.

About 1,600 students are members of the school’s fraternities and sororities. That total represents 23% of the roughly 7,000 undergraduate students enrolled in fall 2022 at the Moscow campus, according to university spokespeople.

Goncalves was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority, while Mogen and Kernodle were members of Pi Beta Phi. Funke is a member of Pi Phi as well, and identified Mogen as her “big sister” in a letter she wrote that was read at a Dec. 2 memorial . Mortensen also appears in multiple photos reviewed by the Statesman, including with Funke, on the sorority’s Facebook page, wearing clothing with Pi Phi insignia.

Many renters in the area around King Road were overflow from the nearby fraternities and sororities, said Merida McClanahan, supervisor at Team Idaho Real Estate & Property Management.

“ we have a lot of university students as our tenants and we’ve got quite a few of the properties down there on King Road,” McClanahan told the Statesman in a phone interview. “It’s a tight-knit community. They’re on the back side of campus right across the street from Greek Row, and those kids cycle in and out.”

The listed owner of the King Road property didn’t return email and phone messages from the Statesman.

1205 07 Moscow House statesman

David Janssen, 32, a former U of I graduate student who said he’s a five-year tenant of an apartment complex adjacent to the rental home, confirmed that fraternity and sorority members appear to dominate the tightly packed neighborhood.

The surrounding Greek life environment contributed to what those familiar with the neighborhood, including Janssen, described in interviews with the Statesman as a loud party culture in the conjoined dead-end streets of King and Queen roads.

“This has always been a party place since I’ve lived here — always,” said Sean Hundley, 34, a nearly lifelong Moscow resident, and maintenance person for the adjacent apartment complex.

The tenants of the King Road house had received three noise complaints for loud music since August, according to a Statesman review of Moscow police reports. Two came on the same night in early September from separate neighbors in two single-family homes, each about a quarter-mile away, on the street located above the valley where the King Road house sits.

Goncalves received a warning from police for the first noise complaint in August. Mogen and Kernodle each received law enforcement warnings from the two complaints in September, according to the police reports.

In recently released Moscow police body-cam footage posted on YouTube , officers were shown trying to track down a resident of the home after the first of the September noise complaints.

“I guarantee you they’re associated with a sorority,” Moscow Police Sgt. Dustin Blaker said in the footage, to a male student who didn’t live at the home. “As many of them are living here, it’s an off-campus sorority house.”

Three floors of Moscow house

The King Road home’s six bedrooms had at one time been rented as separate apartments, according to McClanahan, with the property management firm.

“Primarily for the last 12 years, it has been rented as one unit as a single-family home,” McClanahan said.

The house originally had two floors, but an owner requested to add the lowest floor in 2000, according to Moscow city permits. Built into a hillside, the house has one exterior door on each floor.

The home is 3,120 square feet, according to Zillow . The Latah County Assessor’s Office assessed its value at $343,848 in August.

The first floor

first floor moscow house

All of the tenants except the sixth unnamed person on the lease, who police said had moved out before the start of the school year, were home at the time of the Nov. 13 attack. The five housemates, along with Chapin, were all back at the King Road house by 1:56 a.m., police said. Call records made by Mogen and Goncalves indicated the attack happened sometime after they placed a phone call at 2:52 a.m., according to The New York Times.

The roommates on the first floor, Mortensen and Funke, likely were asleep until later that morning, according to police.

Attempts by the Statesman to reach Funke and Mortensen have been unsuccessful.

At 11:58 a.m., a 911 call was made from inside the house on one of the surviving roommates’ cellphones, according to police. The roommates summoned friends to the house because they believed one of the victims on the second floor had passed out and was not waking up. Multiple people spoke with the 911 dispatcher before officers arrived, police said.

Authorities have declined to release the 911 recording, citing an ongoing investigation.

On social media, many have expressed disbelief that Mortensen and Funke would not have woken up during the killings. However, former first-floor tenant Ryan Augusta told Fox News that he typically “heard nothing” from the second and third floors when he lived there in 2019. Reached by the Statesman, Augusta said he stood by his prior statement.

City records and photos from online rental listings indicate the first floor has two bedrooms that open into a shared hallway. The hallway also leads to a bathroom and a stairway that goes to the second floor.

A door between the bedrooms opens to the property’s driveway.

The second floor

second floor moscow house

The second floor of the home includes a living room, two bedrooms, a bathroom and a kitchen. This floor can be accessed from the outside through a sliding glass door between the porch and the kitchen.

This floor has two separate staircases, one that leads to the first floor and one to the third floor.

Kernodle lived on the second floor, her mother, Cara Northington, said in an interview this month with NewsNation . Chapin’s mother, Stacy Chapin, previously confirmed to the Statesman that her son spent the night at his girlfriend’s house.

The third floor

third floor moscow house

The third floor of the home includes a bathroom and two bedrooms — one of which has a balcony with a sliding glass door. This floor can be accessed only by the staircase from the second floor.

Goncalves’ father, Steve Goncalves, said his daughter and Mogen lived on the third floor, according to Fox News. He said he believes that the two women, close friends since childhood, both slept in Mogen’s room the night of the killings.

Two items — a pair of pink boots frequently worn by Mogen in social media photos and a decorative letter M— could be seen in the window of bedroom E following the homicides. Goncalves posted social media videos from bedroom F.

Goncalves had a dog named Murphy who was home at the time of the attack, police said. Officers found the dog in a room where the crimes were not committed, but do not know where he was at the time of the killings, according to a news release. Police found no evidence on the dog, they said.

Flex Ratings

We’ve categorized the stiffness of our boards into 3 main groups, listed below.  The general rule is the faster you’re skating, the stiffer the deck, but this is not universal.

Flexy – Soft and supple flex profile best suited for carving and cruising on longer boards. The bouncy nature of these decks lets you turn deeper and surf your surrounds.

Medium – The do it all of our boards, a perfect balance of stability and carve.

Stiff – From cruisers to downhill boards a stiff flex profile excels in stability and responsiveness.  Whether you’re dipping into driveways or bombing a mountain pass you’ll be down with the stiffness.
