Corby 25 is a 25 ′ 0 ″ / 7.6 m monohull sailboat designed by John Corby and built by Lion Yacht starting in 2003.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Review of Corby 25

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

Unknown keel type

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.86 - 1.96 meter (6.10 - 6.40 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Corby 25 is 1.97, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.4 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Corby 25 is about 117 kg/cm, alternatively 656 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 117 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 656 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 25.98

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 23m 2 (247 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

UsageLengthDiameter
Jib sheet 7.6 m(25.0 feet)10 mm(3/8 inch)
Genoa sheet7.6 m(25.0 feet)10 mm(3/8 inch)

Broker's Comments

'Don't ever position yourself above a Corby 25 on the starting line' is a quote you may hear from a seasoned IRC campaigner. This is because the 25's are renowned for their pointing ability due to their narrow beam and bulb keel combination. They are still recognised as one of the most potent IRC performers and they consistently deliver top results for their owners. This Corby 25 was commissioned in 2005 and has been lightly raced. Originally in Wales and known as Wil2Win she has won Abersoch Week as well as many other titles, and is now seriously for sale. All the sails are suitable for club racing/cruising with the exception of reaching spinnaker which is in very good condition The inclusion of a road trailer makes this boat the ideal Trailer IRC Racer that can continue to perform at the highest level. You can even use below decks for over-night crashing at a regatta or some longer coastal racing. Only a small number of these 25's were produced, so they don't often come up for sale. If you are serious about performance and want some on-the-water excitement in the sub 30 foot range, put your team together and please give me a shout to arrange a viewing.

GybeSet

Thanks but I'm aware of the history of the 18 foot skiffs. I doubt there are many people interested in racing who aren't; they are obviously a very important and influential line of development. My point is they have evolved and their purpose has changed but the same word is still used although it no longer means the same thing as it once did. A 17th century Thames boatman would have worked on skiffs and used the word, but however open-minded he might be, I don't think he'd find the modern 18 foot skiff a very useful tool to ply his particular trade of offloading cargo and passengers from ships at anchor. That is what skiffs were once for and that is all the word meant; a boat for that purpose. So words change their meaning over time. However you guys seem to think the meaning of "sportsboat" ought to be fixed for all time, and the way the word in used in Europe is wrong, because somebody in Oz allegedly used it first in one particular way. It's the double-standard you are applying that I object to.

I notice your qualification 'modern 18' Interestingly one of the main generational 18 families (owned a foreshore 'boatshed' business - maybe even lightering?) here was grandson of, gr grandson of one of the Queen Victorias thames boatmen, but you know the history of course, funny thing 'werd' skiff was ok by them! For 3 generations inluding the Queen's man they were also champion scullers. couple of things to consider the ships boats skiffs etc back then (before int combustion. engines widely used!) were quite likely to have 'auxiliary' power ie sails.probably not on a calm Thames. Most def. if meeting a ship anchored offshore awaiting a pilot, provedoring etc here. finally the technical difference between a 'boat' and a 'skiff' in clinker-lapstrake days was that one had a keel-truck toward the stern,a keelson, a 'bustle' in fact, that's the defining feature, the 18's went thru both phases of this during their development. anyway i'm done ----------------------------------- reading up on the corby. what rating rules can do, even tho deemed a heavyweight, a poster here says that it needs a football team on the gunnel to perform in a breeze ! ? an anonomolyor just a right royal f-up?

Was Uffa Fox deluded in thinking he produced the first planing dinghy? Anyway, we are creeping up on you with globalisation- they think the plattu is an SB in singapore as well! http://www.rsycregatta.org/main/whattheysay.htm se quote from Bob Howison- is he not an aussie from a famous stable??

he's an expat of some persuASIAN ? B H 41 In SEAsia there are 30 or more Platus, speshly Thailand. After skiff and sportsboat i hesitate to go back to 'by definition' but I have little choice but to 'splain wordage ( no not english!) to the english. What is a ben 25 in the north H is a Platu elsewhere, the name implying SEAsia as it was based initially at the Thai Sattahip Platu Yacht Club you are onto it ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Uffa may have been the only local to know he didn't invent the planing dinghy, that is an Anglo view, just like the Anglo view that taught me at school that Capt Cook discovered Australia .( thats a freakin beauty!), http://seahorsemagazine.com/2001-July/nothingnew.htm

Heaven can wait

Heaven can wait

Heaven can wait said: Chris 249, Fly-n-by was a MK 2, MK 1 had a destinctive convex deck line, ugly really, much like the Vic boat "Sportscar". I've got a photo album somewhere around here with a number of MK I's in it - four from memory in Aust. NZ 1st E780 was "Gorrila Biscuits", which "shat" on everything when it first hit the bubbly in NZ mid to late 80's. I've got one curly one for you blokes, a Lift keel S80??? What is it?? Click to expand...

yes we do, the light trailable sportsboat is an ANZAC developed machine using (re tboat.com) skiff characteristics/features and ..... you of massive UK print resources " And I can't find any record of the term "sportsboat" used re GB before 1993." the onus is not on the Anzac side to prove anything.

Chris 249, Appologies for 780 Fly N by, was a MK 1, as Schofield himself explains they built Fly N By, the First 780 in Australia - prior art in NZ however, he "Flattened" the deck - (took the convex out ) re-moulded the interior and re-rigged (3/4 to M/Head). Anyone know when Gorilla Biscuits was launched?

HCW, in an earlier thread here Sportscar remembered sailing GB in 1987, June I think. Certainly sounds right to me. Gybe says "the onus is not on the Anzac side to prove anything." If the ANZAC side is going to say "we invented the boats and the term therefore we can define it" surely we DO have to prove that we invented the boats AND THE TERM? Remember, in the past when I have presented an opinion about when terms were used, you haven't even accepted being given the date, publication and page nuimber. You have insisted on getting a URL. You are the one who says "pics or it never happened". So if you reckoned we ANZACs invented the term "sportsboat", by your own standards you should show us a scan or pics or it never happened. Just saying it was use in speech here at some date is no proof, because for all we know it could have been used verbally anywhere else in the world earlier. And of course since most of the boats we're talking about are Kiwi designs, we Aussies may not be the authorities anyway. Credit where credit's due. PS......Uffa didn't invent the planing dinghy, pics of Kiwi Ms, Aussie 16s clearly show them planing earlier. Written descriptions of Smith's Oxford canoes and race times indicate pretty clearly they planed. Uffa once told 505 designer John Westell that he thought NO dinghies really planed.......He normally claimed to have invented the first SEA GOING planing dinghy and may have invented the first boat to plane on a reach, not just running downwind before a gale. Bob Howison????? Who? Wasn't the Howison of BH fame a Scot and a Geoff?

don't be anal, look at the damn things (sb) they are borrowing the look/features of ANZAC skiffs, long before the 49er or the I14 merge bedded things down in the NH, Even to this very minute NH bods believe a scaled down f40/m30 YACHT is as SB, or a j105 cos it has a sprit sheezmus eskimos have no claim on kayaks either stoopid???? doh ! don't be so anal, the available evidence is more here(SHem) than there

Tender Rocket

  • Nov 7, 2005

First arguement ORC Sportsboat´s = Corby is not a sports boat. (dispacement fully rigged 2100 kg), Platu is one. (displacement fully rigged 1250 kg). I think Platu is consedered as as sportsboat by majority of the sailors which i´m affraid eventualy makes the decision. Basic defining rules in ORC (rule that ISRA is useing for European Sportsboat Cup) are: Boat must weight under 1600 kg, it must be from 5.5 to 9 meters long and have a greater dispacement/sail ratio than 0.6. Second arguement Let´s look at ethymology of the word´s Yacht, boat and dinghy. Yacht refers to a bigger craft than boat does. Dighy does not have a keel. Boat must have a keel not to be dinghy. (How much keel weight is needed to be considered a boat?) Therefore a scaled down sportsyacht must be a sportsboat. Lift keel or not, it does not change the spirit of the design. It just makes it a bit easier to travel. TR

{ Keel weight1% for the difference}. All designers copy from each other .Its just that some are better than others. Tender Rocket ,whats a spur lash.
