Roach and Taylor take Three Peaks titles at first attempt

Thomas Roach and Catherine Taylor were the respective male and female winners of the 68th edition of the Three Peaks Race supported by inov-8 – and remarkably both were racing the fabled event for the first time.

Roach, of Lewes AC but now based in Austria, led from start to finish and clocked the fastest splits up Pen-y-ghent and Ingleborough into the bargain to cross the line in 2:53:28, just outside the ‘revised’ course record.

Taylor was fourth behind Scarlet Dale coming off Pen-y-ghent but had moved to the front by the second peak of Whernside and never looked back from that point.

She stopped the clock in 3:34:44, nearly 10 minutes ahead of runner-up Catherine Williamson.

Roach a class apart

First run in 1954, the Three Peaks is one of the oldest and most prestigious events in the UK off-road running calendar.

The route, which was slightly increased in distance this year to nearly 39km, traverses the famous Yorkshire Dales mountains of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough – and it was run in ideal conditions this time, relatively dry underfoot, virtually no wind and comfortable temperatures.

But Roach’s performance was still remarkable – and shattered the previous best for the MV40 category, even with the additional kilometre as a result of the route change.

He’d flown in from what’s now home in Austria and had never seen the course before but belied his inexperience with a dominant display – though he admitted the route up Whernside proved the most challenging from a navigation point of view.

He was a minute and a half ahead at the famous Ribblehead Viaduct but had a five-minute cushion at the summit of the third and final peak of Ingleborough.

And he extended that to nearly seven minutes by the line, with Alexander Chepelin (Carnethy Hill Racing Club) taking the runner-up spot and Daniel Connolly (Mercia Fell Runners) rounding out the podium in third.

Last year’s winner Brennan Townshend (Keswick AC) was sixth.

Home World Champs for winner

Speaking to RUN247 afterwards, Roach – who came to the fore in impressive company at the Golden Trail Race Series late last year – said: “It was my first time here so the plan was to follow the leader as I didn’t really know the course and I didn’t know how well it was signed.

“But I always like to run my own pace and I felt like I could push a bit more on the first climb so I took off!

“I lost my way on the second climb a bit [Whernside] but I managed to find it again and then was able to finish it off on the last one.”

Asked how much he’d enjoyed his first experience of this iconic race, he added: “I absolutely loved it. This is my passion so I’m always smiling.”

The first two automatically qualified for Team GB at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in June – and it’s at a significant location for Roach.

“The aim today was to qualify for the Worlds, which is in my home town of Innsbruck, so that’s the next big target – and the Golden Trail Race series too.”

Taylor times it perfectly

Catherine – or ‘Cat’ – Taylor, of Black Combe Runners, ended up a clear-cut winner too, but the first third of the women’s race was a closely-fought affair.

Scarlet Dale was first up Pen-y-ghent in 33:24, with Taylor in fourth and she’d remain in that position through Ribblehead. But going up Whernside she made her move and from then on was out on her own – in stark contrast to Dale who would drop out of the race.

Catherine Williamson (Loftus & Whitby AC) and Holly Wootten (Keswick AC) were second and third respectively, around 10 minutes back.

And course record-holder and Three Peaks legend Victoria Wilkinson was fifth.

Dragon Gold Cup – Race 3 won by Portugal’s Pedro Rebelo de Andrade

Race 3 of the Dragon Gold Cup was won by Portugal’s Pedro Rebelo de Andrade, sailing POR89 with Jose Leitmann and Jamie Lea.

He was followed home by Lawrie Smith in GBR815, with Michael Zankel’s POR90 third.

Race 3 was held in a strong and squally north-westerly that at times pushed both the sailors and their boats to their limits. The fleet was initially held ashore to allow the wind to drop a little, but racing eventually got under way around 16:00.

Overnight series leader Peter Gilmour, sailing JAP56 with Yasuhiro Yaji and Sam Gilmour, finished the race in fourth place, which means they continues to lead the series by two points from Lawrie Smith.

Michael Zankel moves up into third overall at the halfway point in the championship. Peter Cook’s GBR402 drops from third to fourth, with Pedro Andrade now rounding out the top five, but on equal points with sixth placed Grant Gordon’s GBR833.

In the Corinthian Division the top performer of the day was the Kinsale Yacht Club’s own James Matthews, sailing IRL219 with David Good and Fergal O’Hanlon.  Second Corinthian finisher was Graham Bailey’s GBR192 with Jono Brown in GBR753 third.

In the overall Corinthian standings James Mattews moves up from fourth into the lead, with Cameron Good’s IRL211 second and Jono Brown now third.

Three races remain to be sailed in the six-race, no discard series which continues until Friday 13 September.

Scottish Three Peaks Race Report 2023

Congratulations to all the volunteers and competitors taking part in the The Scottish Islands Peaks Race.

Over 30 boats took part in the 2023 edition which mixes fell running and sailing (and rowing when the wind disappeared!) in an epic adventure covering 160 miles on the water, plus over 60 miles on foot.

Starting in Oban, boats began arriving at the finish in Troon over two days later with around 60% of the fleet completing the race.

Congratulations to 2023 Scottish Islands Peaks Race winners, Tangaroa! Skipper Marc Turner, runners Robin Wilkins and David Wallace, and sailing crew Steven Forteith and Nicolas Le Clanche came in with a time of 55:39:43.

A huge well done to all involved including the marshalls, competitors and race organisers; Alison, Sarah and Toben.

BIG UPSET IN CEDAR CITY AS BRADEN JUDGE WINS!

The 2024 Rocky Mountain ATV/MC WORCS Series concluded in Cedar City, Utah with Braden Judge winning the Pro Production and Sebastian Marquez dominating the Pro Stock division. The event witnessed intense battles and unforeseen mishaps, shaping the standings as the summer break begins. The next round is scheduled for September in Vernal, Utah.

DEMARTILE WINS BATTLE WITH LYNN AT CEDAR BEACH OASIS!

The recent Rocky Mountain ATV/MC WORCS Racing event in Cedar City, Utah, saw impressive victories by Dare Demartile, Mason Semmens, Racer Fry, and Kaitlyn Jacobs. Justin Hoeft, Tyler Lynn, and Kai Aiello also showcased their skills on the challenging course. Exciting battles unfolded in various classes, providing an action-packed racing weekend.

JUDGE CONTINUES PERFECT SEASON AND MARQUEZ WIN IN BLYTHE

The 2024 Rocky Mountain ATV/MC WORCS series at Shortys MX Park in Blythe, California saw thrilling racing action. Sebastian Marquez claimed the Pro Stock win, while Beau Judge dominated in Pro Production. Marquez leads the championship by 12 points. Beau Judge secured a commanding win, with Shawn Saxton impressing with his remarkable performance.

HOEFT MAKES IT BACK-TO-BACK AS HE SHINES IN BLYTHE

The 2024 Rocky Mountain ATV/MC WORCS Series at Shorty’s MX park in Blythe, California witnessed intense races. Justin Hoeft, Mason Semmens, and Jackson Glathar secured victories. Dare Demartile led early, but Hoeft overtook him later to win. Semmens won the 250 Pro class, and Noah Gordon and Jackson Glathar dominated the Pro-Am class. Ryan Surratt led the 125 Pro class and Mikayla Nielsen triumphed in the Women’s Pro class.

BRAXTON GROSSE WINS IN CONVINCING FASHION AT SHORTYS MX PARK

The 2024 Rocky Mountain ATV/MC WORCS Racing series reaches its halfway point at Shorty’s MX Park in Blythe, California. Braxton Grosse wins the Pro Class, with intense battles heating up the competition. In the Pro-Am, Justin Semas dominates, while Torey Matajcich leads the Womens Pro. FATHER AND SON TEAM PUT CAN-AM ON TOP AT E STREET MX

Rocky Mountain ATV/MC moved to E Street MX in Marysville, California for the third round of the 2024 season. Sebastian Marquez and the Judge family impressed, with Marquez winning on Saturday and Beau Judge clinching victory in the Pro Production class. The unique track layout made for an exciting race, with unexpected turns and standout performances.

BEAU BARON LEADS WIRE TO WIRE AT E STREET MX

Round 3 of the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC in Marysville, California, featured intense racing in Pro-Am and Women’s Pro categories. Beau Baron seized the lead in Pro-Am, while Justin Semas dominated. Torey Matajcich continued her winning streak in Women’s Pro. With Baron now leading the points, the competition remains fierce with Damon close behind.

LYNN SHINES AT GLEN HELEN RACEWAY ON NEW TEAM

The Rocky Mountain ATV/MC WORCS race at Glen Helen Raceway featured intense battles in every class, with SLR Honda riders Tyler Lynn and Mikayla Nielsen dominating. Colton Aeck triumphed in the 250 Pro Class, while Dustyn Davis showcased his hometown advantage in the Pro-Am Class. Justin Hoeft led the 450 Pro Class until running out of gas on the final lap, allowing Tyler Lynn to secure his first win of the season. In the 250 Pro Class, Colton Aeck emerged victorious, and Hometown Hero Dustyn Davis claimed first place in the Pro-Am Class.

BATTLE OF THE BEAU’S WITH JUDGE TAKING THE WIN AT THE SEASON OPENER

The first round of Rocky Mountain ATV/MC at Honolulu Hills Raceway in Taft, California saw optimal weather and intense racing. Beau Judge secured a 3rd consecutive win and Cruz Worley triumphed in the Pro Stock class. Notable performances included Karsen Sandberg’s rise to 4th place and Sebastian Marquez’s comeback to secure 4th position.

TRAVIS DAMON WINS IN SEASON OPENER NAILBITER AT TAFT

The first weekend of the new year brought thrilling racing at the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC WORCS Series at Honolulu Hills. Travis Damon claimed his first win in the Pro ATV Class, while Torey Matajcich defended her title in Women’s Pro. In the Pro Class, a fierce battle ensued, with Damon clinching victory by a small margin. Exciting races are ahead at Glen Helen on January 26th-28th.

DARE WINS FIRST 450 PRO RACE AT HONOLULU HILLS

Rocky Mountain ATV/MC WORCS returned to Honolulu Hills for the first round, with Dare Demartile winning the 450 Pro race and MX Phenom Brock Bennett dominating in 250 Pro. FMF partnered with WORCS Racing for the 2024 season, offering a $1000 cash purse for the Pro 125 class winner. Kaitlyn Jacobs secured the Women’s Pro title, while Jackson Glathar impressed in the Pro-AM class.

The three peaks yacht race is one of the oldest and most remarkable multi-sport endurance races in the world., teams of five sail from barmouth in north wales across to bardsey island and then north up the llŷn peninsula and in to the menai straits to caernarfon. here they will drop two runners off who have to run 25 miles all the way to the summit of snowdon (yr wyddfa in welsh) and back. the sailors must then guide their yacht up to whitehaven by the lake district where the runners must cycle 20 miles to blacksail youth hostel and then run up and down scafell pike before cycling back to whitehaven. the team then sails north to scotland all the way to fort william where two runners will tackle the 16 mile round trip acent of ben nevis., a total of 389 sailing miles, 40 miles of cycling, and 59 miles of running.  it draws competitors from all sporting backgrounds, with sailing experience from off-shore cruising to round-the-world races, sailing & sports clubs, schools, military & company teams. the race starts on sunday july 14th 2024 and new for this year is a two peaks class for those who dont have the time to do the full event..

The race is run under handicap, and is open to both multihills and monohulls, and there is a non-competitive Challenge class available.

Rare super blue moon peaks Monday night over the High Desert. What to know.

High Desert stargazers are preparing for the first of four consecutive supermoons in 2024, with the first appearing over Southern California skies on Monday night.

The rare super blue moon's first full appearance began Sunday and will continue through Wednesday morning. But the best viewing is expected to be Monday.

Monday’s moon will be one of the biggest and brightest full moons of the year because of its close distance to the Earth. The moon will appear about 15% brighter than average.

The moon will orbit about 14,000 miles closer to Earth than average, making it a supermoon, according to EarthSky.org.

Supermoon explained

NASA officials explained that the moon travels around Earth in an elliptical orbit, or an elongated circle, with Earth closer to one side of the ellipse.

Each month, the moon passes through the point closest to Earth (perigee) and the point farthest from Earth (apogee).

When the moon is at or near its closest point to Earth at the same time as it is full, it is called a “supermoon.” During this event, because the full moon is a little bit closer to us than usual, it appears especially large and bright in the sky.

The term "supermoon" was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979 as either a new or full moon that occurs when the moon is within 90% of its closest approach to Earth.

How rare is the super blue moon?

The August 2023 blue moon carried the name “blue” because it was the second full moon in a single month. However, the blue moon of Aug. 19, 2024, is different, according to EarthSky.

The August blue moon is the third of four full moons in a season, with a single season being defined as the time between a solstice and an equinox. Those moons carry the name Blue Moon as well.

The idea of a blue moon as the second full moon in a month is more recent than the idea of a blue moon as the third of four full moons in a season, EarthSky explained.

The first recorded use of "blue moon" in English dates from 1528. Speculations on the origin of the term include an old English phrase that means "betrayer moon" because it led to mistakes in setting the dates for Lent and Easter.

Or it may be a comparison to rare events such as when dust in the atmosphere makes the moon appear blue. Since the 1940s the term "blue moon" has also been used for the second full moon in a month that has two full moons.

The last seasonal blue moon was in August 2021, with the next one in May 2027. Another monthly blue moon should occur in May 2026, according to EarthSky.

While supermoons and blue moons occur fairly regularly when they align, it is rare, typically occurring about every 10 years. The last monthly super blue moon happened a year ago, but the next super blue moon of both varieties is not expected until 2037.

Sturgeon moon

Monday’s full moon is also a sturgeon moon, named because of the giant lake sturgeon – the native freshwater fish of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain that was readily caught during this part of summer, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac.

The Old Farmer's Almanac , which first began publishing the names for the full moons in the 1930s, said the sturgeon was a primary food source for Native Americans who lived near the two lakes.

More supermoons in 2024 include the harvest moon

The next full moon will be the harvest moon on Sept. 17. In addition to being one of the best-known full moons of the year, part of the moon will pass through Earth's shadow during the night, causing it to become partially eclipsed.

The closest full moon of the year will be the hunter's moon on Oct. 17. The full beaver moon will appear on Nov. 15

Barnaul, Altai Krai (Siberia)

Barnaul is the administrative center of the Altai Krai [Altai Territory] which had been created in 1937. In the years following the 1941 Deportation of the Volga Germans, many Volga German families moved from the rural settlements in the Altai Krai into the city of Barnaul.

During World War II, more than half of the light ammunition used by the Soviet Army was manufactured in Barnaul in factories that had been relocated there from Moscow, Leningrad (St. Petersburg), Odessa, and Kharkov following the invasion of the Nazis.

Barnaul – the view from above

Barnaul is a city with a population of about 632 thousand people located in the south of Western Siberia at the confluence of the Barnaulka and the Ob rivers, the administrative center of the Altai Krai .

It was founded as a settlement at the Akinfiy Demidov silver smelting plant in 1730. The blast furnace on the city’s coat of arms reminds of those times. Today, it is a large industrial, cultural, medical, and educational center of Siberia . Photos by: Slava Stepanov .

The most famous attractions are in the Altai Mountains, but you can also spend some great days in Altai Krai. Here I am telling you where to go in the Altai Krai to have a great time.

Basargino looks like it was created in some kind of computer simulation game. And there, on a little piece of land you need to arrange cozy wooden comfortable houses, a farm, a church, a cafe and a restaurant with insanely delicious meals, an apiary, lakes with fish, a chicken coop and pastures. You also should have cows, pigs, goats and sheep. And also wolves and yaks to make the visitors even more delighted.

Visit the forge in Belokurikha and forge a horseshoe for good luck 

There is not a feminine equivalent for a blacksmith, therefore I will simply introduce Anna Biletskaya as the blacksmith. Anna, armed with a heavy hammer and an anvil, is able to forge a horseshoe for a horse in 15 minutes and a decorative horseshoe for luck in only 10 minutes. Well the last one is more in demand lately. Anna opened her smithy to visitors a few years ago. This blacksmith in a skirt shows the whole process during her short master classes: first heat a piece of metal over a fire, then take a hammer and beat it well on the anvil, pull it back, then bend it and put it back into the fire. Finally, cool and clean it.

Visit "The Gold of Altai"(Zoloto Altaya) - to bath in Sanduny or to ride a horse

A hot bath filled with herbs such as hypericum, yarrow, camomile and also a rejuvenating bathtub -  these are the Russian answer to the best Asian spa with plumeria flowers. Well, the Altai version looks more brutal, but you will quickly feel the great effect. The herbs are collected and specially prepared here, in "The Gold of Altai" eco-hotel on the shore of the lake. Bathhouses are warmed up in both old Russian traditional ways: the "black" banya (a smoke goes out of bathhouse through cracks in wooden walls) and the "white" banya (a smoke goes out of the bathhouse through a pipe). The professional bath attendants will help guests adjust the right amount of steam and smack them briskly all over their bodies with special bath brooms. The largest horse farm in this district is also located in the hotel area; you should not miss the chance to ride a horse at least around the local territory.

What else to do in Altai:

• Take a walk through the pine forest near Barnaul
• Stop by the village of Srostki, where Vasily Shukshin (the soviet movie director) was born
• Spend a day at the "Biruzovaya Katun" Resort
• Take a walk along Biysk and visit the museum of the Chuysky Tract
• Relax in the "Altay Palace", check-in to the only official gaming zone in Siberia
• Go to Lake Aya

A new event in the calendar marries flat-racing with artisanal food. Chefs taking to the stage include Alex Payne, Adam Smith, Sarah Frankland, Ascot’s Ben Dutson and Farmer Tom. Adult admission for the Queen Anne Enclosure is £20.
