in 1998, describes what it was like to travel from Dover to Calais by hovercraft.

n July, 1998, celebrated 30 years of service by its first commercial hovercraft, the (a sister to the , shown above). Both SRN4 Mark III craft remain the largest hovercraft in the world, and they continue to offer frequent daily service on the English Channel's Dover-Calais route.

If you've never traveled by hovercraft, you're missing a unique experience. You drive or walk aboard, then settle into an airline-style seat in one of the two passenger cabins that flank the vehicle deck. The car hatches are closed, the four 3,800-hp gas turbines rev up, and air fills the rubber skirts beneath the craft.. Moments later, four huge propellers send the craft blasting across the English Channel at more than 50 knots (58 mph or 98 km/h).

You can read a free newspaper, have a cup of coffee, and have duty-free goods delivered to your seat during the brief "flight" (as hovercraft journeys are called). When the channel is rough, you may feel a bit of chop despite the 3m/10-foot air cushion that separates the hovercraft from the water. This shouldn't be a cause for alarm--the craft are approved for operation in 50-knot winds and 3.5-meter or 11.5-foot waves.

As you approach the French or English coast, you may experience a moment of alarm as the hovercraft continues to speed ahead in a torrent of spray. But the craft makes a seamless transition from water to land, settling onto the concrete pad of the hoverport after its dramatic arrival. Elapsed time: 35 minutes, making Hoverspeed the fastest connection between England and France.

Since 1991, Hoverspeed Fast Ferries has supplemented its hovercraft with fast catamarans.

The Seacat crosses the channel in 50 minutes, carrying up to 573 passengers and 85 cars.

Two state-of-the-art catamarans, the and the , traverse this 152-year-old route between England and Belgium in just under two hours. The 81-meter or 266-foot boats feature computerized ride control and carry 674 passengers with 155 cars.

The Seacat covers this route in 55 minutes. (In 1990, the captured the Hales Trophy for the fastest transatlantic sea crossing with a time of 3 days 7 hours 57 minutes. The previous record, set by the S.S. , had been unbeaten since 1952.)

This newer route has two to three crossings a day, with the journey taking two hours. The hauls up to 700 passengers and 175 vehicles across the Channel at speeds exceeding 40 knots.

The Hovercraft Museum in Hampshire, England features more than 60 hovercraft in three hangars.

Hoverspeed was created on the 25 October 1981 with the merger of two Cross-Channel operators - Seaspeed, which operated services from Dover to Calais and Boulogne, and Hoverlloyd, which operated from Pegwell Bay near Ramsgate to Calais.

The Company's history is closely linked with the development of commercial hovercraft, operated by the Company up to the year 2000.

The merged Company initially operated a fleet of six hovercraft on services to Calais and Boulogne from Dover.

In June 1986, Hoverspeed was bought by Sea Containers Ltd.

In 1990, Hoverspeed pioneered operations of the world's first vehicle-carrying catamaran, the Seacat, Hoverspeed Great Britain. The company also pioneered operation of the Superseacat, the largest monohull fast car ferry to operate in UK waters, which commenced operation between Newhaven and Dieppe in 1999. Today, Hoverspeed operates a fleet of high-speed catamarans and monohull Superseacats on Cross Channel services to France.

The first of Hoverspeed’s 74m “Seacat” car carrying catamarans was built by International Catamarans (InCat) in Australia was launched as Christopher Columbus  on January 28th 1991.  Despite being hull number 25, she was launched some months before hull 23 ( Seacat Tasmania , later Seacat Calais / Seacat France ). All 5 of these vessels where built to the same “Mark 1” design and specification, with a further 4 built afterwards for other operators to modified specifications.

After delivery , the decision was taken to rename Christopher Columbus to Hoverspeed Great Britain .  Of the five 74 metre craft built for Hoverspeed,  Hoverspeed Great Britain  was one of only two to retain the name with which she originally entered service throughout her time operating for the company. The other vessel was Seacat Scotland , which was the only vessel to retain her original name throught Sea Containers ownership.

Hoverspeed Great Britain  commenced service on the 14th of August 1990 between Portsmouth and Cherbourg, but was plagued with technical issues being the first of her class in service.  During her delivery voyage she had captured the Hales Blue Riband trophy for the fastest crossing of the North Atlantic (Eastbound). This had previously been held by the SS United States for some 38 years.

Hoverspeed Great Britain passes under Tower Bridge in London. She was in the UK capital for the occasion of the awarding of the Hales Blue Riband Trophy for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic (eastbound). InCat.

In November 1990 Hoverspeed Great Britain made publicity sailings to the Isle of Man and Heysham, before entering service between Dover and Calais/Boulogne.  After a final sailing between Portsmouth and Cherbourg on 8th January 1991, she proceeded for refit at Cherbourg.

Hoverspeed Great Britain re-entered service on July 20th 1991, a month later than had projected, between Dover and Calais/Boulogne.

Between December 1992 and March 1993 she was chartered to Ferrylineas Argentinas S.A. for service between Buenos Aries and Colonia, before returning to the UK to operate between Belfast and Stranraer.

November 1993 saw a return to the Dover to Calais and Boulogne services until March 1994, when Hoverspeed Great Britain  operated from Folkestone to Calais.  In 1995 she returned back to the Dover to Calais service until March, when she resumed services between Folkestone and Boulogne.

March 2001 saw  Hoverspeed Great Britain  return to Belfast, this time operating to Heysham in place of Seacat Denmark which had operated the service the previous year.  However, Hoverspeed Great Britain returned again to the Dover to Calais route the following year having been replaced on the Heysham link by the larger Seacat Rapide (by now the Folkestone to Boulogne route had been closed), before layup in 2003.

From 2004 to 2005, Hoverspeed Great Britain was chartered out to French operator Emeraude (renamed Emeraude GB ) for services to the Channel Islands.  Early 2005 saw a further charter, this time to the Greek operator Aegean Speedlines and a renaming to Speedrunner I .  During 2008 Speedrunner I was purchased by Alpha Ferries (also of Greece) who renamed her Sea Runner . They used her to operate between Santori and Crete., however, in 2010 the vessel was arrested.

HSC Speed Runner 1

A further Greek operator, Seajets, took over the craft in 2011 and renamed her Cosmos Jet .  Her service between Heraklion, Agios Nilkolaos, and Santori would last little over a month before Cosmos Jet was laid up in Heraklion with engine problems.  She was towed later that month to Keratsini for further layup.

After a career spanning over 2 decades, it has been reported that the former  Hoverspeed Great Britain  is still laid up in Greece (Chalkis Shipyard, Evia Island) and out of class.  Her registered owner changed in June 2015 to Kalan Shipping (another Greek company) according to IHS Maritime, when she was renamed HIGH SPEED JET .

Reports from Greece suggest that she has been used as a source of spare parts for the rest of the Seajets catamaran fleet since becoming HIGH SPEED JET .

As she has not been in service for some years now, it looks unlikely that the oldest of the Hoverspeed SeaCat’s will ever carry passengers or cars again.

Incat 81m Catamarans

  • Diamant (built 1996).
  • Rapide (built 1996)

After years of losses due to strong competition and the Channel Tunnel link, Hoverspeed announced that they would cease operations on the Dover-Calais route, ending over 40 years of service. The last ferry run was on November 7, 2005.

It was initially thought that both the 81m Seacats would move to Sea Containers Mediterranean services; however in March 2006 both the Seacat Rapide and Seacat Diamant were put up for sale by Sea Containers . Superseacat One which had operated for Hoverspeed on its now closed Newhaven – Dieppe (2000 and 2002–2004) and Dover – Calais / Ostend (2001) fast ferry services was sold in April 2006 to Acciona Trasmediterránea and was renamed Almudaina Dos . Although the company ended Hovercraft service, they still retained ownership of the remaining 2 SRN 4 until 2006 when they were sold to Wensley Haydon-Baillie . They currently reside at the Hovercraft Museum in HMS Daedalus and are open to offers.

Since the closure of Hoverspeed in 2005, the Dover Hoverport had remained unused until SpeedFerries moved to the site from the Eastern Docks . They operated from the hoverport to Boulogne from Easter 2007 until November 2008 when SpeedFerries went into administration and their services ceased. The hoverport site then lay abandoned for the second time in its thirty year history until demolition of the site began in May 2009 in preparation for the redevelopment of the Western Docks and a new Cruise Terminal. Except Calais hoverport (which itself remains abandoned and subject to demolition), all the cross Channel hoverports have now been lost.

Two companies have announced their intentions to operate services to replace Hoverspeed.

Navmed Limited planned to operate a Seacat service to Calais, Boulogne and Ostend. Navmed had planned to start operations on the May 15, 2006 but as of April 2006 do not have any vessels or berthing slots in Dover. Navmed had made attempts to purchase the Canadian ferry Spirit of Ontario I but the owners were in serious negotiations with another buyer which later turned out to be Euroferries.

The Dover Express newspaper reported on 13 April 2006 that Navmed would no longer be involved in the attempt to run a replacement service. Instead Illinois Chikara Holdings plans to run service under a brand new name yet to be released.

Navmed featured in 2 October 2006 edition of the BBC South East program ‘Inside Out’ [3] where it was revealed that their backers had pulled out and the company had yet to pay many staff that it employed in its short life. Another edition of Inside Out on the 25 April 2008 featured Chikara Holdings again [4] .

Euroferries

Euroferries Limited are also attempting to launch a service to replace those of Hoverspeed. Led by former Hoverspeed boss Geoffrey Ede the company intends to run services between Dover and Calais and Dover and Boulogne in competition with SpeedFerries but not as a budget operator. It was thought likely that former Hoverspeed vessels Rapide and Diamant were to be used by this company should it actually begin operations. In May 2006 it was announced that the company had been successful in its attempts to purchase the Spirit of Ontario I , they were to pay $29.8 million for the vessel. She was expected to be deployed on the Dover-Boulogne route. The ship, which was owned by the City of Rochester, New York, had received 7 bids for the vessel. Mayor Duffy of Rochester said Euroferries’ bid was the highest of seven bids that they took seriously. Shortly after the announcement of the sale WHEC-TV stated that the fast ferry would move to the UK “no later than June 21st”. This did not happen.

By October 2006 Euroferries had yet to pay for the Spirit of Ontario I and the City of Rochester had begun to look to other buyers. Euroferries also featured in a BBC South East Inside Out investigation [5] .

It was announced on 17 March 2007 that the City of Rochester had run of patience with Euroferries and cut off active negotiations [6] . Two other potential buyers were reported to be interested in the vessel. The vessel was eventually sold to FRS Iberia S.L. Euroferries claim that they were unable to complete the purchase of the vessel due to UK port restrictions, the maritime press however reported that they did not have the finance available to purchase the ship.

Euroferries claim they are currently evaluating other alternative fast ferries which they believe will be able to commence service on their proposed route from Dover to Calais and Boulogne during the course of summer 2007, with an additional vessel to commence service during 2008 [7] . As of June 2007 there has been no sign of a service commencing.

Euroferries announced at the beginning of 2009 that they were going to be running a service from Ramsgate to Boulogne and that the service would commence in the Spring of 2009. After long delays it was announced on the 31st July 9 [8] that the service would start in September 9 using the Fred Olsen and has been used in the Canaries. The ‘Bonanza Express’ is at the moment back in dry dock in the Canaries and so we must wait and see if the service does start or it goes the way of the 2007 proposed operation from Dover.

Euroferries are accepting reservations and payments on their website for July 2010 even though there still isn’t evidence of a service being provided on the RAMSGATE to BOULOGNE route.
