ENGLISH GALLEON GOLDEN HIND

Sir Francis Drakes ship of exploration was a small English galleon called the Golden Hind. Drake circumnavigated the world in this ship between 1577 and 1580 ( wikipedia entry ).  This sailing ship is a popular subject of wooden ship modelers, and Ages of Sail carries several different kits.

OcCre's  wooden model ship kit is probably the most popular at the time. This plank-on-bulkhead kit is easy enough for new builders, but includes beautiful quality wood, and carries an affordable price.

HMS Bounty was an armed merchant ship in service with the British Royal Navy, and it was on a mission to collect breadfruit plants in the South Pacific, but the ship is most well known for the infamous mutiny against Captain Bligh by a crew led by Fletcher Christian ( wikipedia entry ). This 3-masted square-riggers is another popular subject among ship model builders.

Yankee Tender Scale Model Kit

Description.

Now with lazar cut mold patterns and transom support blocks.

This is our most popular kit. Based on the full-sized 12'4" flat-bottomed skiff, this model is actually enjoyable to build and beautiful to display.

Utilizing two basic construction methods, lapstrake planking for the sides and cross-planking for the bottom, building this model will add considerably to your boatbuilding knowledge and experience.

Consider this is a building course in a box. It's akin to coming home from the lumber yard with wood planed to thickness, but not pre-cut.

We strongly suggest you look over the plans drawings until you truly understand every bit,  and read over the instructions several times, and then start the build process in your head.

Scale: 1 1/2"= 1'

If you'd like a better understanding of just what is involved, view the 8 pages manual by clicking: INSTRUCTIONS . There are photos of two built models, which, if you look closely, you'll see the builders have done some slight modifications.

Here is a building tip for the cutting the planking: When you cut out the side planking (as opposed to the bottom planking) you should be getting both garboard planks from 1 piece of 3/64" x 2" x 24" Basswood. Trace out the first gar board plank with the edge of the pattern as close to the edge of the wood as possible. Just flip the gar board pattern and nest it to the first when you are tracing the second plank.

You should also do the same with the sheer plank using the other 3/64" x 2" x 24" piece. The 4 pieces of the 3/64" x 1" x 24" would be for planks 1 and 2 of each side.

Also, we now include 6 pieces of 3/64" x 3/4" x 24" for the bottom's cross planking (instead of 4 pieces, per the instructions) just to make it easier.

You may notice that the plans show the mold support blocks aft of some molds and the instructions show them forward of the molds. Does it matter? No. The important thing is to have the actual molds in the right place. 

Remember, sheet 1 is at full scale, so if you are thinking you need a pattern for a part (skeg, for example) you can scale right from the drawing.  

The bevels for the transom have a couple of helpful templates. One for the bottom edge bevel, and one for the sides of the transom (noted P & S on the drawing, for Port and Starboard).

Skill levels are: 1 = beginner 2 = intermediate 3 = advanced

Due to a lack of modeling tools, at a few points I thought that a full size boat might have been easier, but taking my time in the end the model turned out great. Heck I even added a set of oars.

Finally finished. Had to read everything many times and worry a lot. But the finished project actually looks good! And I’m a first timer.

Great model

While generally self explanatory, the instructions would be greatly added by having included some close in pictures of key model points. Transom and its bevels, stem knuckle and inner and outer stem segments.

Bought this as a gift to a close friend. He’s never done anything like it and is very excited. It’s a great gift and a fantastic model for a beginner!!!
