1986 O'day 35 Review

sailboatdata oday 35

shopping for an O'day after reading your interesting comments you may be able to shed some light. I I,m looking at two O'days at this time with swing keels and would like some comments and views. One is a 27 food 1987 sitting in salt water with a diesel westerbeke drive. The other is a 1986 with gas powered OMC sail drive inboard. I will be moving the 87 to fresh water if purchased. I now sail a 25 foot Macgregor swing keel she is fun and we spend a lot of time on board, but would like to go bigger for this is better. How do these boats compare and what could I expect in rough water, and winds greater than 25 knots. Steve

We owned a 1984 34ft O'day and had a blast with it - pointed well, quick turn of speed and very comfortable for a couple living aboard. My biggest gripe was the lack of a deep anchor locker... otherwise, what an excellent boat.... (We only sold her to return to the UK and buy a bigger boat to go around on - the O'day would have easily done it, but we wanted more storage space and a steel hull. The new owner of our boat is very happy with it and is continuing her meander throughout the Carib....)

Conclusion Hi Guys, I sold my O'day 35 in June of 2014. She was an excellent boat for my use: day sails, weekend cruises, week long cruises. My family of five and I had a lot of fun with that boat. Now the new owner will have his own adventures. I have to say that O'day built a great boat. She was 28 when I sold her. The hull was still in good condition. The engine had close to 4000 hours when I sold it and still ran great. The mast and boom were fine. I had changed the standing rigging in 2012, the original rigging lasted over 25 years in salt water and had no problems. The Barient winches worked great (I gave them regular maintenance). The ports and hatches were cloudy but still serviceable and most didn't leak a drop (the hatch in the vberth would leak a few drops if green water came on deck). The rudder was original, it had some water in it, but most boats do. The electrical system was mostly original - I had rewired the engine panel but the rest was stock and still functional. All the running lights worked and same thing in the interior, although I did change a number of interior lights to low draw LED or CFL. Overall I was very happy with my O'day experience. Barry

Thanks for the great info! We're in the market to downsize to something in the low to mid 30's and the O'day 35 is on the short list for sure. Haven't gotten on one yet but from what I've seen and read online, it looks like one of the best values going in that size range.

Also consider the Cal 33-2. From the same parent company, same designer, higher performance, a step up in overall quality. Most are listed for $35k to $45k.

I looked at and sailed several Cal 33-2s prior to buying my O'day 35. Pricing was comparable to the O'35. However the smaller interior, no swim platform, and the U shaped setee were factors in my decision not to buy one. However, it might be worth starting a separate thread on the virtues of the Cal 33-2.

Review of O'Day 35

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The O'Day 35 has been built with different keel alternatives.

Unknown keel type

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.68 - 1.78 meter (5.51 - 5.81 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The O'Day 35 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.34 - 1.44 meter (4.40 - 4.70 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

O'Day 35 is typically equipped with an inboard Universal M25 diesel engine at 21 hp (15 kW).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.2 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for O'Day 35 is about 202 kg/cm, alternatively 1133 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 202 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1133 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 34m 2 (365 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Hello all members and owners. I'm looking for some pointers and advice on this boat. Recently I sold my 1987 Catalina30 and now looking at 1988 35-O'Day apparently in "good" shape. I would love to hear opinions, advice, pointers etc what to look for when checking out this boat. The boat is sitting in Caribbean island and access to boat surveyor is very limited. Right now this boat is priced in the $23-25 thousand and it was listed first in April 2017. Is there anything I should specifically look for? Every boat has some weak points and is prone to something if not taken care of. I will be heading to look at the boat next week so any info from owners and anybody who knows this boats will be greatly appreciated. The owner says that deck rot has been taken care of whatever that means. I am familiar with fibreglass work, mechanical issues etc. Original Universal has been refitted with Westerbeke engine

I have 2 friends that each have an O35 and love it! One just sailed his down from NY to FL Gulf coast for the winter. Not sure what specifically you need to look for, but I can say that both love their '35.

heritage

I really liked our O'day 37 which is similar to the 35. They do have iron keels that can show rust stains if not coated well. The iron keel does have one advantage over lead, especially in an older boat, in that the keel boats can be removed and checked by unscrewing them. The price of the one in Isla seems a little high. Also you could have problems bringing it back to the states if the sales taxes have never been paid on it. Did you see this one in Maryland: https://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1988/o-day-35-3199803/?refSource=browse listing ?

The plan is to keep it there as I spend most of the time there. Are the bolts creating any problems like rust, micro cracks etc? Are they accessible from the bilge well? As for the price, you think it is still high with the upgrades listed? Any problems with blistering on the hull? What should I specifically look for. Catalinas from those years had very solid connection for keels to the hull but had problems with compression blocks under their masts.

daviddp

We have a 34 and love it. The transom was the only change from 34 to 35 I think it was marketing based. Sell it as a 35. The price does seems high for a salt water boat of that vintage compared to others we looked at prior to purchase. Looks like the interior will need work. Electronics? Standing rigging? Sails? I don't think you can justify spending thousands on interior @ the price they are asking. We purchased our 83 34' in July 2018 for 15k on Lake Ontario in good shape except vintage interior and electronics which we replaced @ approx 3500. Looks to be about comparable to condition of the one you are looking at. Good luck with it.

We never had any blisters in the 3 years that we owned it. It had been epoxy coated by the PO but no mention by him of blisters. There was a slight separation between the keel and keel stub on our last haul out. No leaking water at the separation or rust stains. Dry bilge. The yard applied some West Systems G-flex as a cosmetic fix. I noticed in the Yachtworld ad that they claimed that the sails were "good". Good usually means tired but usable. The other listed features of boat are impressive. I got the feeling that it is well fitted out for cruising and live aboard. Checking it out, if nothing else, would be a great excuse to go to Isla.

condition of the maryland boat and better price.....hmmm

What about the Westerbeke engine? There was a Universal 25XP on my Catalina. Loved that engine as most parts were coming from Cubota 950 at great discount prices.

I've owned an Oday 35 for 12 years. Love this boat. I've posted on the Oday larger boats about the things that I have done to the boat over the years. There are several other 35 owners that have even more information posted as well. These boats are a great value as far as I'm concerned. Very strong and sea worthy. I would say it is a great buy at that price.

I’m a relatively new owner of an ‘84 34 but am enjoying it immensely. Freshwater with winter haul out so can’t speak to prolonged hull exposure. Only issue I’ve found is inaccessible rudder post to install belowdecks AP drive (encased in fiberglass down to the radial drive). Still trying to decide if I can remove a few inches to install a tiller arm. I know a wheel pilot is adequate but I like the safety of a 2nd steering option if the cables fail. Oh, and check for the ammeter at the control panel - it’s a fire hazard. See this link if you haven’t already https://forums.sailboatowners.com/index.php?threads/universal-engines-wiring-harnes-upgrade.135558/ Fair winds!

Does the 34-35' have the same keel issues as the 322 in this story? https://forums.sailboatowners.com/index.php?threads/dont-see-that-happen-every-day.195287/

My O'Day 35 is a 1986 model that was built in Taunton MA. The fit and finish of these boats is far superior to those built in Florida after the company was sold. For one thing, my keel is lead, not iron. My fixed ports are faded a bit but I do not want to replace them because they have never leaked in 34 years! My through hulls are bronze, not plastic and the wiring is notably better executed. Hull to deack joint is superior and has never leaked. I could go on and on but if you are looking at one of these boats, make sure that it is a Massachusetts build.

O'Day Corp.

Founded by famed Americas Cup sailor and olympic medalist George O’Day. In the beginning George O’Day Associates was only a distributor for several brands of small Sailboats. Some were produced by Fairey Marine of England and Marscot Plastics in the USA. (O’Day took over Marscot in 1958 to build the RHODES 19.) Soon he became involved in producing his own line of boats. Among the most successful projects was in commissioning Uffa Fox to design the DAYSAILER in 1969. Eventually, more than 12000 of these were sold. O’Day sold his company to the conglomerate Bangor Punta (later Lear Siegler) in 1966. For a number of years, O’Day Corp. was the largest producer of sailboats in the US. Manufacturers ID (>1972): XDY.
