'...total originality in yacht design has become more difficult to attain following Jon Bannenberg’s masterful levels of creative daring.' - “I don’t want to lead everything back to my dad — but it’s well known and accepted that, whether it’s his big round windows, or certain lines, or a way of treating wings on a superstructure, they all inspired many people and I think that’s fair game. I think all people’s design processes, whether subliminal or not, are recalling something — whether it’s something that’s stirred, or triggered something, or sparked an idea, or an unintentional homage to someone.” - Dickie Bannenberg talks of yacht design and his father Jon Bannenberg's groundbreaking work.

Superyacht Rising Sun which Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen partied on docks in Mallorca

rising sun yacht mallorca

A SUPERYACHT that Barack Obama once partied on has dropped anchor in Mallorca.

The 454ft Rising Sun, the 11th largest recreational boat in the world, is owned by billionaire media mogul David Geffen and reportedly worth a cool €250 million.

Ex-US president Obama joined buddies, guitarist Bruce Springsteen, actor Tom Hanks and TV host Oprah Winfrey for a recent break onboard the Rising Sun in French Polynesia.

“What happens on the boat, stays on the boat,” chirped Winfrey upon her return.

Hanks was a little more forthcoming, joking; ‘Look, imagine what it could’ve been like it, triple it. It was off the scale, fantastic’.

Five storeys high, the mega yacht Rising Sun can hold 45 crew and 16 guests in eight cabins.

It has its own basketball court which doubles as a helicopter pad as well as space for a private submarine.

A wine cellar, private cinema and gymnasium are sure to keep guests entertained, and with a speed of 28 knots it’s certainly no slouch.

The Rising Sun was custom built in 2004 by Lurssen Yachts and designed by Jon Bannenberg.

Geffen, whose record label introduced Nirvana to the world, bought the yacht in 2010 from US businessman Larry Ellison, the fifth richest man in America.

A Closer Look at the $200 Million Rising Sun Superyacht

There are a few different categories of yachts in the world. As a yacht enthusiast you might hear a few different terms being thrown around in the descriptions, such as Super yacht up to 100 feet in length or Mega yacht up to 300 feet. These are the larger water craft and there is even a giga yacht which are those that are over 300 feet in length. With this in mind, the Rising Sun, which is often referred to as a Super yacht far exceeds the parameters set for the classification, so if we’re going to be particular about the classification, we’d call it a Giga yacht. However it’s categorized, the Rising Sun is one of the most amazing private yachts afloat and we’re going to take a closer look at the features which make this multi-million dollar ship so special.

Rising Sun Yacht built by Lurssen: A Celebrity Choice

This yacht has hosted some of the most celebrated personalities in the film and record industry as well as the political arena. Barack and Michelle Obama were seen vacationing on the Rising Sun in 2017, and it’s also hosted Hollywood stars including Oprah Winfrey , Julia Roberts , Leonardo DeCaprio, Tom Hanks and others. The co-founder of Dreamworks, film producer and record executive David Geffen is the owner of the Rising Sun, which ranks as the 9th largest yacht in the world, currently. Depending on which source you consult, the cost to build this giant is estimated to be $200 million and some have it as high as $400 million but we believe that the base cost was the latter and the extra figures come from upgrades .

The history of the Rising Sun

The Rising Sun is the commissioned craft of its first owner Larry Ellison, who partnered with David Geffen and is the current CEO of the Oracle Corporation. He ordered the building of the ship from the German shipbuilding company Lürssen . The Rising Sun is the design of Jon Bannenberg, who has since passed away. The ship was delivered to Mr. Ellison in 2004, who shared ownership with David Geffen until 2010, when he decided that it was too large, so he sold his share to Geffen, who is now the sole owner of the yacht and Ellison bought a smaller yacht.

Specifications and details

The Rising Sun yacht is constructed of a strong aluminum superstructure with a displacement steel hull and teak decks, in accordance with Germanischer Lloyd classification society rules. The ship requires 4 MTU 12,061 horsepower diesel engines to propel it though the water. The average cruising speed is 26 knots and the top speed of the ship is 30 knots. To make the yacht more comfortable and safe in rough waters, it is fitted with zero speed stabilizers for times when she is at anchor. The Rising Sun measures 453.97 ft in length with a 62.34 ft beam, a draft of 16.08 ft and gross tonnage of 7841 tons. The exterior was designed by Bannenberg & Rowel and the interior by Seccombe Design. It was built by Lurssen and refit in 2004 and 2011. At the time of the sale it was the 6th largest yacht in the world, but other new superyachts have displaced it to the 9th position.

Luxury amenities

It takes a crew of 45 to maintain and operate this massive vessel and they are housed in 30 cabins. The guests are housed in 8 cabins which can accommodate between 16 and 18 guests comfortably. The yacht has been designed with more than 8,000m² of living space, allowing for larger gathering areas as well as plenty of places to find privacy from the crowd of guests. There are a total of five decks with 82 rooms aboard the yacht. Some of the luxury amenities include a spa and gym so guests don’t need to miss out on their daily workout routines. The Rising Sun is also quipped with a lift/elevator to take guests between the five decks. For practicality so guests/owners can come and go from any location, there is also a helipad on board. For fun in the sun there is a swimming pool as well as underwater lights for excellent illumination, and a sauna for relaxation. The ship also features air conditioning throughout the 82 rooms so guests can achieve the optimal room temperatures, even on hot days at sea, and there is also a Tender Garage, as well as a Cinema large enough to accommodate all guests for entertainment.

Final thoughts

The Rising Sun has only had two owners since it was built in 2004. Co-owners Larry Ellison and David Geffen shared it for a period of time, then Ellison sold his share to Geffen who is now the sole owner. The yacht was once the sixth largest yacht in the world, but is still considered a wonder coming in at ninth place. It’s packed to the hilt with luxury amenities and there is plenty of space aboard with five decks and 82 rooms. The ship which cost $200 million to build is now valued somewhere between $3 and $4 million, and it has only increased in value with the passage of time and no doubt numerous upgrades to suit the preferences of the owner. It’s served as the vessel that provides a source of recreation for some of the most famous people in the world including some of our most beloved Hollywood stars and even a former president and first lady. The Rising Sun is truly one of the most magnificent yachts that has ever been created, and those who are fortunate enough to be invited on board are in for a top notch luxury experience.

Mallorca, the destination chosen by Mark Zuckerberg to debut his $300 million megayacht

T he group of megayachts that have been sailing the waters of Spain’s Balearic Islands since the arrival of good weather has welcomed a new member. While last year it was Amazon founder Jeff Bezos who debuted his $500-million toy called Koru, this year, it was tech entrepreneur Mark Zuckerberg who is sailing the Mediterranean with his latest acquisition: a megayacht called Launchpad. The 118-meter-long vessel, made by Feadship from the Netherlands, is valued at $300 million. The luxury yacht was completed last March and was delivered to Zuckerberg on May 14, the same day that the Meta founder and owner turned 40 .

The ship flies the flag of the Marshall Islands, in the region of Micronesia, and, according to its technical specifications, it is 118 meters (387 feet) long, 17 meters (55 feet) wide and has a capacity for 24 guests, to which up to 48 crew members can be added. It can reach a speed of 20 knots with a range of 3,000 nautical miles, and the cost of its annual maintenance costs is more than $30 million.

The luxury yacht was designed by experts from Monaco-based Espen Øino International, which has a long track record in designing large vessels. Little is known about its interiors, beyond the fact that they were designed by Zuretti Interior Design, a French company dedicated to yacht interior design. The Launchpad has three decks, in white and navy blue, the bow has a tennis court, while on the aft deck, there is a helicopter to bring in guests from the mainland. On one side of the hull there is a glazed terrace for sunbathing or dining in front of the sea. During the time that is has been moored in the Bay of Palma, in Mallorca , slides and inflatable water toys have been seen in the sea.

Last week, the crew tested the yacht and the ship’s helicopter, signalling Zuckerberg’s imminent arrival. The social media guru landed in the private area of Palma airport on Friday night, June 14. The businessman and his wife, Priscilla Chan, were snapped leaving the terminal, with their three daughters: Max, August and Aurelia. The family was picked up by a vehicle that took them directly to the port of Palma, where the Launchpad was located. In recent weeks, the megayacht has been moored in the luxurious Club de Mar-Mallorca, fitting in beside the vessels of wealthy sheikhs and businessmen. Over the weekend, the Launchpad sailed to the south of the island, to spots such as Santa Ponça. So far, no photos have been taken of the Zuckerberg family or their guests on dry land.

Last weekend, Zuckerberg himself posted a photo on his Instagram profile, which has almost 14 million followers. In the image, he appears with his entire family as they celebrate his father’s 70th birthday. The group is seen wearing identical T-shirts that read “Ed’s Kids” after his father. Around 20 family members have come together on the megayacht to celebrate the milestone birthday. Zuckerberg’s three siblings also appear smiling in the images, joined by their partners and children.

“Happy Father’s Day to the man who started and continues to inspire our whole family,” Zuckerberg posted. “We’re also celebrating his 70th birthday and it was really something to hear the grandkids (at least the ones old enough) take turns telling papa all the ways he is meaningful in their lives last night at dinner. Here’s to many more.”

Megayacht debuts

The Launchpad , which also has a support vessel called the Wingman , is the latest megayacht to make its debut in Mallorca. Last year, Bezos launched Koru, the largest sailing yacht in the world, measuring 127 meters (416 feet). The Amazon founder and his fiancée, news anchor Lauren Sánchez , sailed the Mediterranean last summer on the $500-million vessel. Both arrived to the yacht directly by helicopter from a private plane that landed in Palma and were also photographed with a group of friends in Ibiza.

The Koru was also docked at the luxurious Club de Mar-Mallorca in Palma, the capital of the Balearic Islands, where producer David Geffen often moors his yacht Rising Sun . Just a couple of weeks ago, this gigantic 138-meter boat welcomed Kendall and Kylie Jenner , who spent a few days off with their mother, Kris Jenner, on the coast of Mallorca. In recent summers, Geffen has regularly sailed across the Balearic Islands with famous friends such as Bezos himself, actor Tom Hanks and singer Paul McCartney.

Chinese tycoon Jack Ma, founder of the Alibaba group , also debuted his megayacht Zen in Mallorca. The ship made its debut in 2021 after its construction was completed in a shipyard in the Netherlands. At the time, Jack Ma had largely out of the public view for two years after publicly criticizing China’s regulatory system. He was spotted on the Balearic island that summer playing golf in the municipality of Calvià, where his yacht was anchored. He liked the island, and he returned in 2022 the following summer.

Spotted: celebrities on superyachts

Even celebrities need to get away from it all. BOAT spots the celebrities choosing to enjoy their well-earned vacation time on board some of the most glamorous superyachts in the world, cruising everywhere from the Caribbean to the Mediterranean. Look out for the likes of Sydney Sweeney, Drake and the Jenners...

Kris Jenner and Corey Gamble

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kris Jenner (@krisjenner)

Kris Jenner and boyfriend Corey Gamble recently joined the Hilfigers on board their 62-metre Feadship yacht Flag . The group were seen cruising the Amalfi coastline, pit-stopping in Capri where Dee and Kris posed with their Pucci purchases, while snippets of the yacht reveal the distinctive red, white and blue cushions that are synonymous with the fashion powerhouse's logo. Delivered by the Dutch shipyard in 2000, the yacht is one of Feadship's most recognisable and has had a host of A-list guests on board over the years. Tommy Hilfiger purchased the yacht in 2017 from friend and business partner Lawrence Stroll, when it was formerly known as Faith. She is currently jointly listed for sale with Burgess and Merle Wood & Associates .

Sydney Sweeney

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sydney Sweeney (@sydney_sweeney)

Captioning her post with the best-loved ABBA lyrics "my, my how can I resist you?", Sydney Sweeney has lived out her Mamma Mia dream in Greek waters. Amels ' 74-metre Synthesis is best known for her red-tiled pool, which Sweeney strikes a pose in – and the celebrity also shared videos of her effortlessly riding the waves on an electric surfboard and plunging beneath the waterline with a Seabob. The yacht was delivered in 2021 to an experienced owner (and repeat Amels client) as the fifth Amels 242 Limited Editions design. Naval architecture is owed to Damen Yachting, exterior lines are the work of Tim Heywood , and Synthesis' bespoke interior is by Winch Design . She was a nominee at the 2022 BOAT Design and Innovation Awards .

Magic Johnson

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Earvin "Magic" Johnson (@magicjohnson)

Former American basketball champion Magic Johnson celebrated Independence Day on board Lürssen 's 90-metre superyacht Phoenix 2 . (Look a little closer and you'll see a certain Samuel L. Jackson in the picture too). Red, white and blue decorations associated with 4 July can be seen in the background of the photograph, while the crew are captured welcoming guests with US flags as they dance around the aptly themed dining table. Delivered in 2010, Phoenix 2's art-deco interior undoubtedly sets her apart from the superyacht fleet and evokes the grandeur of Jay Gatsby’s mansion. She was designed throughout by Winch Design and was refitted in 2019, accommodating up to 14 guests in seven cabins.

Kylie Jenner

As seen on her Instagram , Kylie Jenner has most recently been sighted soaking up the Spanish sunset on board the 138-metre Lurssen yacht Rising Sun in Mallorca along with her sister Kendall and mother Kris. The yacht was the last to come from the late designer Jon Bannenberg’s drawing board and is recognisable by its extensive use of structural glass – giving a clean, stripped-down profile. Onboard highlights include a double-height cinema, basketball court and a top deck dedicated entirely to owner use. The yacht is owned by American film producer David Geffen and has played host to a star-studded guest list over the years, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Oprah Winfrey and Julia Roberts.

This isn't the first time the A-Lister has been spotted on a superyacht. Jenner has marked numerous milestones on the water, ringing in the New Year with a dazzling fireworks display onboard an unknown superyacht (with new boyfriend and actor Timothée Chalamet reportedly accompanying her). The billionaire businesswoman and founder of Kylie Cosmetics also famously celebrated her 25th birthday on board the luxurious Party Girl charter yacht.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by amber asaly (@amberasaly)

Built by Icon Yachts in 2013, Party Girl 's exterior was dreamed up by Redman Whiteley Dixon while the interior is by Christiano Gatto . Refitted in 2019 and 62.5 metres in length, she has enough space to accommodate up to 12 guests in eight staterooms. Onboard entertainment includes a beach club, swim platform, Jacuzzi, gym as well as a huge selection of water toys and accessories such as paddleboards, wakeboards, Seabobs, inflatables, snorkelling gear and a waterslide. She also celebrated her 22nd birthday bash on board the Oceanco -built superyacht Tranquillity in August 2019.

Lauren Sánchez and Jeff Bezos

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lauren Sanchez (@laurenwsanchez)

Lauren Sánchez was seen celebrating her 54th birthday in style, hosting a lavish, red-themed party onboard her fiancé Jeff Bezos' 125.9-metre Koru . On the guest list was actress October Gonzalez, attorney Lydia Kives and the celebrity dermatologist known as Nurse Jamie.

Koru was delivered in 2023 as Oceanco 's flagship and the world's largest sailing yacht. She has since been spotted cruising in Mallorca , Florida and the British Virgin Islands. While details on the superyacht have been kept tightly under wraps, exterior imagery reveals a large swimming pool on the aft deck, a seating area on the bowsprit and multiple areas for relaxing across her open decks.

Charles Leclerc

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Charles Leclerc (@charles_leclerc)

Currently racing in Formula One for Scuderia Ferrari, Charles Leclerc was spotted "with the boys" onboard his 20.7-metre Riva Sportfly Sedici . She's named after his race number (the Italian for "sixteen"), with his choice of model coming as no surprise considering Riva's ongoing partnership with the luxury car manufacturer . Accommodation is for up to 12 guests with the yacht's standout feature being her large, "aggressive" sundeck.

Central Cee

Central Cee's adventures in Phuket, Thailand included a stint onboard a charter yacht . The British rapper packed a copy of Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea to read while cruising – a BOAT -approved choice, as the film adaptation is one of our top picks for a movie night onboard a yacht .

Rafael Nadal

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Rafa Nadal (@rafaelnadal)

In November 2023, international tennis superstar Rafael Nadal was spotted enjoying his 80 Sunreef Power yacht Great White alongside his wife and toddler. Great White was delivered in June 2020 after Nadal commissioned the fully customised 24.4-metre power catamaran. Nadal has often been seen cruising around his beloved home of Mallorca both before and after the Wimbledon championships. He had previously chartered a number of Sunreef catamarans.

Robbie Williams and Ayda Field

This summer the former Take That singer Robbie Williams was snapped enjoying a sun-soaked holiday by wife Ayda. Previously spotted in Turkey on board the 43.2 metre Trinity Yachts superyacht Keyla , the pair are frequently seen on board luxury yachts, with Ayda also joining James Packer and ex-wife Erica onboard the mammoth IJE in St. Tropez last year. IJE is named after Packer's three children with Erica: Indigo, Jackson and Emmanuel, and is an 108-metre custom creation from British design studio RWD and Italian builder Benetti .

Former Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson dropped his annual "inspirational" tweet as hundreds of thousands of British students receive their A-Level results in 2022. The tweet reads: "Don’t worry if your A level results are disappointing. I got a C and 2 Us and I’m currently holidaying on this boat". The boat in question is the 64.4-metre classic superyacht Shemara and Clarkson has been spending time on board cruising the Ionian islands in Greece. Visible in the picture is the aft deck with a wooden Jacuzzi and classic tender.

Conor McGregor

Drake’s music video for track “Sticky” features 72.54 metre Coral Ocean . The visuals of Honestly Nevermind also heavily feature the 1994 Lürssen yacht. Coral Ocean emerged from a full-scale, €35,000,000 refit earlier in 2022, sporting a new hull colour as well as a host of other modifications that have maintained her Jon Bannenberg prestige. The video was shot by Drake’s long-time visual collaborator, Theo Skudra. Coral Ocean is currently owned by Australian businessman Ian Malouf and is available for charter via Ahoy Club.

David and Victoria Beckham

British lovebirds Posh and Becks were spotted on 108-metre IJE enjoying their 2022 summer vacation. The family spent quality time off on the Amalfi Coast before heading to dreamy St Tropez onboard the Benetti flagship. Joining them were children Harper and Cruz, as well as Tana Holding and newlyweds Brooklyn and Nicola Peltz. The yacht offers plenty of deck spaces for the family to soak up the sights, with highlights including a large aft deck pool and beach club. The yacht is also home to a nightclub.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Months after he and his partner Georgina welcomed their new baby daughter Bella Esmerelda, Ronaldo was spotted on the sunny island of Majorca in June 2022. Boarding CG Mare with his son Cristiano Jr earlier that year, the Portuguese football star purchased the Azimut-Benetti model after frequently chartering superyachts in previous years. The CG Mare was delivered in 2020 in Italy and was designed by Stefano Righini , with interiors by Salvagni Architetti . In December 2014 he opted for a superyacht charter in Dubai and was later spotted soaking up some sun on Lionchase in the French Riviera.

Priyanka Chopra, an Indian actress, producer, model and singer, was pictured on a superyacht with husband Nick Jonas not long after welcoming in the New Year. The winner of the Miss World 2000 pageant, Chopra celebrated with her husband near St. Barth’s as well as friends Natasha Poonawalla and Cavanaugh James.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce)

In September 2021, celebrity power couple Beyoncé and Jay-Z have been spotted cruising the French Riviera on board the 136-metre Lürssen superyacht Flying Fox . The couple were noticeably absent from last year's Met Gala and were soon tracked down enjoying the Mediterranean sun on board the world's most expensive charter yacht. The couple are no strangers to superyacht getaways and have been previously spotted on board the 95.2-metre Lürssen superyacht Kismet and 107-metre Benetti superyacht Lana .

Flying Fox is now back on the charter market but still subject to US sanctions , meaning Beyoncé and Jay Z are unlikely to step back on board anytime soon.

Kendall Jenner

Model and reality TV star Kendall Jenner took some time off in the 2021 summer season in Sardinia on board the 49.9-metre CBI Navi superyacht Eleni . First launched in 2005, Eleni can accommodate a total of 12 guests on board and features an opulent interior penned by Luca Dini . Eleni is well equipped for an action-packed charter and carries an inflatable slide, two SeaDoos and Jetskis.

Ed Sheeran

Music superstar Ed Sheeran demonstrated the true meaning of downtime when he shared this image of himself relaxing on board in January 2019. Sheeran was joined by his security guard Kevin Myers, jokingly captioning the picture, "A rare sight of me reading a book and @securitykev bird watching." Although Sheeran did not reveal which yacht he had chosen for his holiday, it seemed it provided the ideal location for a little rest and relaxation during time off from his world tour.

Shock moment 30ft luxury yacht turns into raging inferno in Majorca as panicked passengers dived into sea

THIS is the shocking moment an ultra-luxurious yacht caught on fire off the coast of tourist hotspot Majorca.

The 30ft long vessel billowed black smoke as passengers desperately jumped into the water to escape.

Smoke was seen billowing from the boat

Footage taken in Cala Figuera shows the luxury boat completely engulfed in flames and sinking under the Majorcan cliffs.

Another boat is seen nearing the fireball boat, presumably in an attempt to allow escapees on.

Thick black smoke is seen billowing from the boat as onlookers on other vessels watch on in horror.

Majorca's rescue control centre received a report about a fire at roughly 1.40pm on Tuesday.

There were reportedly four adults onboard, all of whom saved themselves by desperately jumping into the sea, Mallorca Zeitung reports.

They were then let onto a private boat nearby and taken to safety.

Luckily the passengers were unharmed, but the luxury boat tragically sank.

The cause of the massive blaze is currently unknown.

It comes as a multi-million dollar superyacht caught on fire at a popular holiday destination.

The £14 million boat, called Atina, sunk just off Le Saline Beach in Oblia, Sardinia in Italy on Saturday morning where it was anchored.

Footage from the Olbia Coast Guard shows the luxury boast completely engulfed in flames and sinking while being doused with an extinguisher.

Onboard were 16 tourists from Turkey who managed to escape the blaze.

They were collected by firefighters and coastguards and there were no reported injuries.

The boat ended up on the seabed about 22ft deep.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation after the fire began in Atina's engine compartment.

Among those on board was Serkan Borancili, who owned the 150 ft super yacht.

Borancili co-founded the troubled grocery delivery app Getir in 2015.

Local media said the clean-up operations were underway.

On Luxurious Ibiza, Essential Workers Are Forced to Live in Tent Cities

The Spanish island fills beachfront hotels and glittering dance clubs with wealthy tourists. But its teachers, firefighters and police officers can’t find a place to live.

A man in a black t-shirt and a woman in pink pants stand outside a tent surrounded by trees.

By Benjamin Cunningham

At 1,900 euros a month, the rent was not cheap. But Alicia Bocuñano still felt fortunate to find an apartment on Ibiza at that price. As a taxi driver pulling 16-hour days, Ms. Bocuñano, a single mother who grew up on this Spanish island, figured that a surplus from the busy summer months might be enough to make the rent.

But her would-be landlord wanted six months of rent plus a security deposit up front — close to €14,000, or about $15,300, in one shot. Though not quite legal in Spain’s tightly regulated rental sector, such demands are common on Ibiza, where wealthy tourists fill beachfront hotels and glittering dance clubs while the people who work in those places — not to mention the island’s teachers, firefighters and other essential workers — can’t find a place to live.

In lieu of a new apartment, Ms. Bocuñano, 38, spent a frightening two weeks sleeping in her car, then three months in a tent with her 10-year-old son, Raúl, by her side, before buying a used caravan in June. For a couple of months, she stationed the Caravelair-brand trailer in Can Rova, an ad hoc village of tents, shacks and campers on the outskirts of Ibiza Town, the island’s capital, just behind a dealership selling expensive powerboats. “When we first came here it was cold,” she said. “Like, very cold.”

Tent cities began popping up here in 2023, but they have mushroomed in size and number this year. Can Rova, the largest of three major camps in and around the capital, was home to some 280 people this summer. On a recent July night, six people and a dog were bedding down on the floor in Ms. Bocuñano’s caravan.

Many Can Rova residents said that, with nowhere else to go, they hoped to stay indefinitely. But on July 31, the police made good on a court order to clear the camp, which had been erected on private land. (The owner is currently embroiled in an array of zoning and legal disputes.) Many said they planned to relocate to one of the other camps, even as those sites lacked the electricity, water and perimeter fence that made Can Rova accommodating.

Ms. Bocuñano was detained by the police during the mass eviction, and may face a fine.

In much of the world, homelessness correlates with a lack of work. But not on Ibiza, where the jobs are plentiful and the booming tourism sector depends on itinerant workers (with varying immigration status). Though seasonal labor has long strained the housing supply for a few months each year, the shortage now looks more structural.

“People who work every day to care for their children have no place to live,” Ms. Bocuñano said.

The rise of remote work and a surge in short-term rentals have erased many apartments from the market, compounding existing shortages caused by land-use restrictions on an island prized for its natural beauty, and by poor public policy that followed the burst of Spain’s housing bubble in 2008.

“It is fundamental,” said Carme Trilla, an economist and former director of housing policy for Catalonia, the Spanish region on “the peninsula,” as islanders are wont to say. “By definition they have to live there, and it’s not only price but also availability that is a problem.”

Ibiza’s deepening housing crisis came slowly at first, and then all at once. The island’s brand — “sun, beaches, nightlife,” as one broker put it — blossomed in the 1960s and ’70s as bohemians congregated on this Balearic Island. The flower children gave way to disco, and bell bottoms were pushed off the dance floor in the 1980s and 1990s by rave culture. By the 2000s, Ibiza had secured its reputation as a mecca for electronic music and luxury escapism.

“It is the only place in the world where you can see the top DJs in the world in top venues every night,” said Yann Pissenem, C.E.O. and owner of the Night League, parent company to Ushuaia and Hi, two of the island’s hottest clubs.

The island’s year-round population of 160,000 is double what it was 20 years ago and growing. During peak summer months, more than a million people make merry on the island at any given time, with upscale tourism putting still more pressure on housing.

Ibiza is an extreme example of a larger phenomenon in Spain, where about 12 percent of the gross domestic product comes from tourism. A recent report found that in 306 cities and towns considered tourism draws, rents are an average of 75 percent higher than the national average — the largest gap ever. Already this summer, thousands of protesters have turned up in other vacation spots including Malaga, Mallorca and the Canary Islands to demonstrate against the excesses of tourism.

Ms. Trilla, who now runs Habitat 3, a foundation that works to facilitate subsidized housing, said that on Ibiza, the crisis has been intensified by a new spate of discount airline connections to European capitals, and by more online platforms renting apartments to foreign visitors. The median price for a home on the island is now €558 a square foot — three times the national average and more than double the average in Madrid and Barcelona.

Three-quarters of prospective buyers on Ibiza are looking for a second home, while another 15 percent want an investment property, said Paloma Pérez Bravo, C.E.O. of Sotheby’s International Realty in Spain. So on an island with inadequate housing and limited buildable land, many homes sit vacant for much of the year. And since the pandemic, she added, there’s been more demand from buyers who want to live on the island year-round. “Ibiza is a good investment because the prices never stop rising,” Ms. Pérez said.

On a recent afternoon just before the demolition at Can Rova, residents related stories of crammed studio apartments where people would sleep in shifts on so-called “hot beds” for about €300 a month.

Maria Fernanda Chica, a 34-year-old Colombian who is awaiting working papers, lived in one such apartment while cleaning luxury homes for cash. “I couldn’t cook food when I needed to,” she said of the conditions. “At best I could use the kitchen once per day.”

This summer, she was living in a makeshift structure in Can Rova with her partner and teenage son. Most of the residents there rented plots for between €350 and €450 a month, plus €50 euros for water and another €50 for electricity. The residents were responsible for digging their own septic systems. A good number had built shanties from plywood, shipping pallets, AstroTurf, tarpaulins and other basic materials.

Jonathan Sanchez, 33, and his girlfriend Sandra Velasquez, 41, sleep in a tent among a few dozen others in another informal settlement. Mr. Sanchez, who was born on Ibiza, works construction by day. Ms. Velasquez, a Colombian émigré lacking work documents, works nights cleaning for €7 an hour.

“I don’t even remember the last time I went to the beach,” said Mr. Sanchez on a recent night. His T-shirt said “Ants” — the name of the party that Mr. Pissenem hosts on Saturdays.

The couple charge their mobile phones at bus stops and draw water from a tap in a nearby cemetery. Most of their neighbors are seasonal workers from Morocco who decamp after the summer season. Mr. Sanchez has been in his tent for 14 months. His co-workers have no idea where he lives. “It’s not that I am embarrassed,” he said. “I just don’t want people to feel sorry for me.”

Whenever campers like Mr. Sanchez are forced to move on, the Guardia Civil, one of Spain’s two national police forces, will likely play a role (as they did in the Can Rova eviction). But many of the officers are themselves caught in this housing crisis. At the height of tourist season, there were 17 vacant Guardia Civil positions on Ibiza. Many new recruits avoid work on the island and rotate out when they can find an opening elsewhere in Spain, said Tomas Quesada, a Guardia Civil officer and union representative. Starting salaries are just €1,800 a month, and the monthly €94.63 cost-of-living bonus makes little difference.

“It is leading to the desertification of public services,” Mr. Quesada said. “We have the right to be able to live.”

Nurses and doctors face a similar reality. So do teachers, some of whom commute daily by airplane from other islands to save money. “We don’t have the same level of public services here in Ibiza,” said Joana Tur Planells, a union representative for teachers.

Land will always be limited on a 220-square-mile island, but there is an emerging consensus that government intervention is needed. In the town of Santa Eulària des Riu, where Can Rova was located, City Hall plans to allocate 54,000 square feet of public land for housing construction over the next few years. Policy documents call for increased emphasis on the construction of multifamily dwellings and a crackdown on illegal short-term rentals.

Carmen Ferrer Torres, Santa Eulalia des Riu’s conservative mayor, points to plans to break ground on the construction of 60 smaller rental apartments — a fraction of the units needed to ease the strain.

“These are important, urgent problems with solutions that will take longer than we have,” the mayor said. In the meantime, her party also advocates further liberalizing rental markets, betting that streamlined evictions for scofflaws could free up stagnant housing stock. Ms. Ferrer was on site supporting the July 31 clearance of Can Rova.

But for Ms. Trilla, the housing economist, the big picture solution is clear. “It’s necessary to prioritize public housing for essential workers,” she said, adding that the problem is not just housing but the price of land. Basically, public money is needed to buy private property at market prices.

She pointed to a series of policies in Barcelona, the Catalonian capital, that might ease short-term housing supply, including one that would temporarily loosen zoning rules so officials could break up single-family homes into multiple apartments. Barcelona is also phasing out short-term rentals of the type offered by platforms like Airbnb. They will be virtually banned by 2028.

On the private side, successful business owners like Mr. Pissenem, the club impresario, are wrestling with the crisis. His company has begun helping its seasonal workers find accommodations. “We all need to figure out a way to help the people that hold the island in their hands,” he said.

For now, Ibizans like Ms. Bocuñano wonder where their next home may be. For the first couple of nights after the Can Rova raid, she stayed on a friend’s couch. Her son is staying with her mother on the other side of the island. She was briefly allowed back in to Can Rova to get her personal possessions, including her caravan, but needed to borrow a vehicle to tow it.

A super super yacht!

Super yacht

The Rising Sun off Cala Egos.

Designed by the late legendary Jon Bannenberg and built by German master ship building company Lürssen, the Rising Sun is a 138 metre superyacht built in 2004 and she is currently cruising the Balearics .

It is one of the largest yachts in the world.

The Rising Sun was originally bought by Oracle Corporation CEO Larry Ellison but ownership was subsequently taken over by Geffen Records’ David Geffen.

The American business magnate and philanthropist first acquired half shares in the Rising Sun in 2004, before taking outright tenure in 2010.

Frequented by celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Beatrice, the Princess of York, the Rising Sun offers a living area of over 8,000 square metres over five levels and 3,300 square metres of deck space lavishly layered in teak.

Jacuzzzi bathrooms and countertops fashioned out of onyx gives the yacht a particularly sumptuous atmosphere. Up to 16 guests can comfortably cruise on the Rising Sun, their every need taken care of by as many as 43 crew members, who can also be easily accommodated onboard the yacht.

The Rising Sun has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure with hawseholes plated in chromium. A cruising speed of up to 26 knots can easily be achieved and a maximum speed of up to 28 knots makes longer journeys easier.

To further ensure the absolute comfort and enjoyment of every guest onboard, the luxury yacht is also equipped with a full gymnasium, a wide-ranging wine cellar and a sauna and a spa.

The basketball court on the main deck doubles up as a helicopter pad when required and the private cinema features an enormous plasma screen offering limitless entertainment to royalty and celebrities alike.

National news | study finds majority of baby food in us supermarkets does not meet who guidelines.

The study looked at nutritional and advertising guidelines from the World Health Organization.

However, Lauren Dunaway, a registered dietitian and professor at Tulane University, says that in the United States, we have our own guidelines separate from the WHO.

“They’re called the Dietary Guidelines, and they’re a joint project between the USDA and the Department of Health and Human Services,” Dunaway said.

That is why she has questions about the study, which suggests that 60% of foods marketed to children 6 to 36 months old have too much sugar and salt — as well as make misleading marketing claims.

“How are they defining healthy, and how are they defining the misleading claims?” Dunaway asked.

Regan Bailey, a parent and professor of nutrition at Texas A&M, says the best thing to do when shopping for baby and infant food is to try to avoid products with a lot of added sugar and higher amounts of sodium.

“You want to limit sodium as much as possible, so not adding it and looking for products with lower sodium amounts,” Bailey said.

Despite some skepticism, Bailey believes foods that come in pouches are fine to feed children as long as they have good ingredients.

“They are a safe and nutritious way to help children meet dietary recommendations,” Bailey said.

Bailey also says that beginning at about 12 months, table foods are encouraged. So, rather than only using pre-packaged products, cutting food into smaller pieces is also an option.
