Intrepid 430 Sport Yacht

  • By Kevin Falvey

intrepid 430 sport yacht review

Once again, the outboard motor has changed the face of boating. Today’s outboards combine high levels of power and efficiency with lower maintenance, lower noise, and ease of use other propulsion can’t match. Contender, Donzi, Fountain, Glacier Bay, Hydrasports, Intrepid, SeaVee, MJM, and others now offer big boats that are real cruising pleasure boats. Intrepid’s 430 Sport Yacht is one of the best.

The 430 Sport Yacht takes full advantage of having motors outside the boat with its master cabin, large head, and massive stowage and service access. The performance that a trio of outboards can deliver is heightened by the highly refined surfaces of its single-step hull and amplified by its stiff, light-but-strong, vacuum-bagged construction. It’s a gas to run. And while a couple could hit the islands for a week aboard this boat, it offers considerable capacity as a racy, spacey, big-water dayboat. The 430 Sport Yacht isn’t perfect, but I found it unrivaled in many areas.

Superior Interior

L. Francis and Nat Herreshoff were legendary designers and were the world’s first large-scale production boatbuilders. They knew how to keep a cabin from feeling like a cave, even though their largest boats rarely incorporated standing headroom. They used lots of ports and windows as well as strategically positioned skylights over tables or work areas. Above all, they used brightwork — oiled or varnished wood — sparingly and low: Above waist level, white finished bulkheads and cabinetry reigned, with dark wood used only for definition.

Unfortunately, many of today’s cruiser builders fail to follow their time-proven example. Yes, hull windows, skylights, and portholes are used with abandon. But even with 6’6″ of headroom, dark teak or cherry bulkheads running to an over-upholstered headliner make a cabin feel heavy and enclosed.

Now step inside the 430 Sport Yacht’s cabin. Large, fixed hull windows in the forward berth and aft stateroom combine with skylights over the galley, salon settee, master berth, and head vanity. The sole is teak and holly. Galley cabinets, including the drawer refrigerator, are medium-toned, book-matched wood laminate topped with honey-colored faux stone. The headliner is white fiberglass, which imparts a lighter feel than wood. Cabin and head doors are also white fiberglass. Yes, the Herreshoffs denigrated fiberglass, but even they would applaud the way the doors on this boat are made. Instead of using cheap, extruded aluminum frames on which to hang the doors, mating rabbets are molded into the bulkhead and each door’s interior edge, forming the frame and stop. The fit is so seamless that, when closed, the doors nearly disappear into the bulkhead. (I’m sure Intrepid will add mirrors to the insides of these doors, though they were missing on my test boat.)

Behind one door, in the space inboard engines might occupy, I discovered a queen-size berth with walk-in headroom. Directly above is a skylight — a deck hatch, really, though from topside you wouldn’t know it. Like all the hatches and skylights aboard the 430 Sport Yacht, this one is flush with the surface above, which contributes to the seamless look of the exterior. Also, it can be opened only from within, which adds security.

A combo TV/DVD player was mounted a foot or so beyond my feet when I reclined — perfect. But for the hanging locker and the bedding, white fiberglass finishes the majority of this space. The large hull window allowed reflected sun diamonds to dapple the bulkheads and dance on the overhead.

The head is opposite this stateroom, occupying the balance of the space below the helm area. A stall shower with a gorgeous seat offering built-in stowage, a honey-topped vanity, and another strategic hatch-cum-skylight make it functional and pleasant.

**Out and Inside **

Topside accommodations aboard the 430 Sport Yacht are amenable, best illustrated by the electrically convertible sunpad, which is incorporated into the athwartship leg of the eight-person Ultraleather L-lounge opposite and abaft the helm. Touch a switch and it folds out into the cockpit, forming a two-person tanning station. Our cover model for this test, Amanda, reported that she was “totally comfortable,” even as we romped across the Gulf at nearly 60 mph.

The seat is well built, thickly upholstered, and padded with high-quality foam that doesn’t bottom out. But the real credit for Amanda’s comfort comes from the soft, stable ride the 430 Sport Yacht delivers. It’s fast, rides smooth, and responds the instant you goose the throttles. It’s the ride’s finer points, however, that kept Amanda from rolling out of her un-strapped thong, despite my efforts.

There’s little hesitation as the boat strikes a wave. It maintains a level attitude — you go through swells rather than climb up and down them. Hit a wave quartering at a different angle than the rest of the train, and instead of dropping on one chine as do many boats, the 430 Sport Yacht keeps its poise, remaining level across the beam.

There’s no wetbar aboard the 430 Sport Yacht. Intrepid is a semi-custom shop, ready to satisfy your needs. The same is true of Contender’s 38E (roughly $500,000 powered like my test boat). Still, a standard wetbar in a boat of this class seems a no-brainer to me.

The aft cockpit, all 100 or so square feet of it, is a warren of precision-fit hatches. Some conceal insulated stowage boxes. Aboard my test boat, these were plumbed as fishboxes and livewells. But they’d hold scuba gear, deck chairs, or what have you with equal ease. Open other hatches to reveal excellent access to systems and plumbing. A boarding door and platform provide water access, but I had so much fun running the 430 Sport Yacht, I’d have to own it awhile before I’d be willing to stop for a swim.

Extra Point: Tiny, indestructible, prismatic LED sidelights built into the hardtop deliver outstanding luminosity, have a two-mile range, and draw practically no current.

Sport Yacht Defined: The Intrepid 430

  • By Jay Coyle
  • Updated: November 26, 2008

intrepid 430 sport yacht review

intrepidweb445.jpg

I first heard of Intrepid while serving as a design consultant at Broward Marine in the 1980s. Back then it seemed that every new Broward motoryacht owner ordered a new Intrepid. The boats were customized to suit each owner’s interests and served as beloved second boats towed astern. As this generation of yachtsmen advanced, so did Intrepid, building bigger and more sophisticated boats. This memory crossed my mind when I spotted the robust stainless steel tow eye on the stem of the 430 Sport Yacht, Intrepid’s latest launch.

As was the case with the first models, the 430’s soft, shapely lines and innovative layout set her apart from other similar boats. She is Intrepid’s vision of what comes after a large center console and what a sport yacht should be. Whether serving as a weekender, a watersports platform, or a megayacht tender, she delivers performance with style. Like her larger sister, the 475 Sport Yacht , she is a response to customers that liked the smaller 390 but wanted private sleeping accommodations separated from the main cabin. The 430 sport yacht hits the mark, achieving a unique blend of indoor and outdoor space in a smaller, more efficient package. While she has a foot less beam and is four and a half feet shorter than the 475, her arrangement seems competitive.

The 430 sport yacht is trim enough to be towed behind a megayacht and used for water play, yet she is large enough for a couple to spend a week aboard cruising the Bahamas. Our test boat would serve well in both roles as she was equipped for towing and was fitted with optional air-conditioning and a generator. The 7 kW diesel unit was tucked amidships beneath the cockpit lounge and plumbed to a dedicated 25-gallon fuel tank. Incidentally, when I stepped aboard, both the Yamaha four-strokes and the generator were purring along so quietly, I took no notice of them.

intrepid 430 sport yacht review

The 430 offers many of the design features that Intrepid has pioneered as well as a few new tricks. The slick drop-down switch panel at the helm, the fuel-fill tap hidden discreetly beneath a door in the coaming and the hull-side water access door were expected. The hull-side windows are similar in style to the 475’s. The airinduction system in the foredeck that feeds the breeze to the helm area was something new, as was the electrically actuated seat/sunpad. These creative touches keep Intrepid customers coming back for more. Owners also have a say in their boat’s design. For example a molded arch usually supports the 430’s hardtop but our test boat’s owner requested more traditional anodized aluminum pipework. Her engines were color-coordinated with the hull-a custom touch Intrepid owners favor.

I found the same attention to detail in the 430’s interior. Intricately tooled interior liners form the foundation for the modular high-gloss cherry cabinetwork. The clean and tidy result is accented with quality soft goods and hardware. The galley area has a Corian countertop with a stainless steel sink, a microwave, and drawer-style refrigeration. A nice touch is the self-securing European drawer system with stainless steel drawer trays. A settee opposite the galley converts to a bunk, and a built-in seat and platform berth are forward. The owner’s cabin is amidships, tucked beneath the helm. The head has a separate stall shower. The lighted hanging locker is a nice touch, however the carpet lining seems off key. I would prefer to see cedar instead.

intrepid 430 sport yacht review

Performance has always been a part of Intrepid’s appeal and the builder has mastered the art of tuning stepped hulls to pleasurecraft applications. Steps are employed to induce lift and reduce drag. Proper ventilation is essential to avoid suction and the 430’s notched chine is effective. Step placement is critical to a boat’s balance and trim and the 430’s seems ideal. She climbs to plane at just 15 knots with no significant bow rise and at speed she is not overly stiff longitudinally. A touch of tab engaged her fine forward sections with the chop in the Gulf of Mexico. Her power-assist steering is silky smooth and her synchronized dual-lever controls are a brilliant solution to a triple-engine setup. And is she fun to drive! I collected our numbers in the calm waters of the ICW and noted a maximum speed of 49.7 knots. The Yamaha electronics indicated a fuel burn of 38.2 gph cruising at 32.8 knots while turning 4000 rpm.

After my sea trial, I took a tour of Intrepid’s production facility in Largo, Florida. Much had changed since my last visit several years ago. New computer-controlled routers have been added and were busy cutting the prelaminated cored panels that form the closely spaced network of stringers, bulkheads, and web frames supporting the hull of the 430’s sport yacht. The same sort of technology was being used to cut reinforcements and interior and exterior finish materials. The most significant update was in the lamination shop where parts-including the 430’s deck and liners-are now being resin-infused instead of hand-laminated. This method creates a consistent resinto- glass ratio that optimizes a laminate’s strength and eliminates unnecessary weight. Hulls are still laminated by hand with solid bottoms and foam coring in the topsides. The ones I inspected in the mold were expertly crafted. All major parts, including the hull, cockpit, and deck, are molded in white gelcoat. Optional colors are offered in linear urethane paint. While Intrepid’s physical facility has grown over the years, it remains a simple collection of steel buildings. It is the innovative spirit within that drives the company. During my visit, Intrepid’s 300 employees were working a six-day week building about 170 boats a year.

Intrepid sport yacht owners have high expectations and the builder always seems to deliver. Many good customers often preorder their new Intrepids sight unseen. Six 430’s were ordered before the first hull was out of the mold. I am quite certain these folks realized a new Intrepid was a good bet and I know they won’t be disappointed.

Intrepid 430 Sports Yachts

Where luxury meets a sporty appearance.

Yachts are known for being among the highest stages of luxury on the water, but they do not always have the sporty appearance that people crave with their vessels. This has been a complaint for yacht owners for quite a long time and not many companies have listened. However, Intrepid is among the only boat manufacturers that prides themselves on their ability to listen and bring to reality all of their customer’s request. The product of many years of research and development into exactly what the customers want has led to the manufacture of the Intrepid 430 Sports Yacht and you are going to love all that this boat has to offer.

Made for Travel

Small boats are manufactured fishing or just a few hours on the water, but the Intrepid 430 Sports Yacht primary purpose is for the utmost in luxury while on the water. Taking this vessel along the coast and out into deep waters is the way to travel and instead of relying on the possibility of getting a reservation along one of the busy coastal cities, you can simply stay onboard and have the most restful night sleep possible. Travel becomes much more of a freeing experience when you are not concentrating on check out times and when to be somewhere. With the Intrepid 430 Sports Yacht, you can have the most relaxing travel experiences imaginable.

Accommodations onboard the Intrepid 430 Sports Yacht are able to be customized to your individual tastes, but the base features are luxurious enough for even the most finicky of travelers. Features such as a cabin lounge area with a full-sized berth and an extra bed area enable you and your guests to be comfortable no matter where you travel. The galley area is fully functional with available cooktop, dishwasher, microwave, sink, and a myriad of integrated options to fit your needs. Shower and facilities are part of the package as well. You can truly get comfortable on board the Intrepid 430 Sports Yacht.

To Power It All

Power is essential if you are going to be world traveling oceanic royalty and no yacht would be complete without powerful motors speeding the vessel along its way. The Intrepid 430 Sports Yacht has three of the most powerful engines available, but not only will you get three, you will have the ability to choose from five options. The choices begin with the always reliable and highly powerful Yamaha. The outboard motors manufactured by Yamaha are backed by 30 years of experience and dependability. Mercury and Seven Maine are additional motor choices with available corrosion protection on the Mercury and a 6.2L V8 supercharged Seven Marine option. You cannot go wrong with any of these highly rated choices, but if fuel efficiency is what you are after, the final two options are for you.

Evinrude and Suzuki are known for manufacturing motors that are both powerful and fuel efficient. These companies bring that rich tradition of excellence to the Intrepid 430 Sports Yacht as well. With Evinrude the E-TEC engine allows you to head deep into the ocean with confidence and the ability to utilize the 30% more torque with up to 15 % less fuel consumption. Suzuki brings a powerful V6 engine to the table with sequential electronic fuel injection for maximum fuel efficiency. While others are fueling up their yachts, you will be sailing right past aboard your fuel minded Intrepid 430 Sports Yacht with these motor option.

Lighting the Way

Light within the cabin of many yachts is simply difficult to come by. Apart from the artificial lighting effects, natural light comes at a premium. Onboard the Intrepid 430 Sports Yacht, guests are able to enjoy the natural light flowing through the cabin throughout the day. This remarkable feature comes from the available retractable sunroof over the cabin. On a bright sunny day, you can enjoy the spectacular beauty of the light all while relaxing below deck. This feature is especially enjoyable at night when a romantic atmosphere is in order. Enjoy looking at the stars with the comfort and serenity of the Intrepid 430 Sports Yacht all around you. There is truly no stone unturned within the design of this remarkable luxury vessel.
