On Thursday (June 29), Birdman unveiled a trailer for his forthcoming documentary, Ma$termind , which is expected to make landfall before summer 2023 comes to a close. Much of the clip shows the New Orleans mogul enjoying some downtime on his yacht. Juvenile and Bryan Williams Jr. are among the few cameos seen throughout. At one point, the two-minute video names Birdman “the most influential CEO mogul in the history of the music business with the longest run in the rap game, past, present, and future.”

Originally founded in 1991, Cash Money Records spawned some of the biggest artists in hip hop and R&B, including Lil Wayne, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Jacquees, and Tyga. Other heavyweights, including Young Thug, DJ Khaled, Yo Gotti, Busta Rhymes, Ace Hood, and Curren$y, have connected with the multimillion-dollar imprint at some point during their respective careers.

During a sit-down with REVOLT’s “ Drink Champs ,” Birdman explained how inspiration from his hometown helped him to bring Cash Money to the forefront. “New Orleans always had a culture. We was able to move and do what we do throughout New Orleans, Texas, Atlanta, throughout the South. Alabama, all them areas,” he stated. “For us, we was still generating a lot of money and we was putting out a lot of music every month… So, for me and for us, we was just really trying to get out the ghetto. I found the hustle, which was music, and we just stuck with it. Kept it pimping.”

He was also very clear about his position in the game. “To me, with all respect to everybody that ever did this s**t, none of ’em have done more than me,” he declared. “I sold over a billion records, I done sold over 300 billion streams, and I done did over 575 million on iTunes alone.”

Birdman is breaking his silence. Power 105 personality Angie Martinez paid a visit to the Cash Money boss last week at Scott Storch’s former mansion in Miami and spoke to him about YMCMB’s ongoing drama. In Part 1 of the interview, which took place aboard Birdman’s yacht, he opened up for the first time about his fallout with his “son” Lil Wayne, allegations that he was involved in a murder-for-hire plot against Weezy, the alleged drink-throwing incident , and why Drake and Nicki Minaj won’t be leaving Cash Money.

Despite their issues, Birdman still and will always have love for Wayne. “Wayne forever my son. That ain’t gon’ change,” he said. “I think what’s going on is just some business, and my perspective is, I’ma do whatever he wanna do. But he still gon’ be my son. Ain’t nothing gonna change the fact that he my son. … At the end of the day, no matter what he wanna do, I’m with it. That’s my son. I love him to death. He got my blessings and I’ma support him no matter what he choose to do.”

He claims that he still speaks to Weezy and had a conversation with him as recently as two days ago. When Angie asked how it got so bad, he replied, “It’s not considered bad to me,” adding, “I think media makes it worse than it really is.”

But while he will respect Wayne’s wishes, he doesn’t want to see him leave the label. “I’m not gonna let him go, but if he wanna go, I’ma respect his call,” he said. “If he say he wanna go, I’m not gonna stand in his way. If he tell me, ‘Pops, it’s time to move on…’ I haven’t heard it from his mouth.”

As for the $51 million lawsuit ? “That’s a conversation that we can work out.”

He chalks it all up to a “big misunderstanding.” “Our business got so big and everybody got in our business, and it ain’t me or him. … It’s all these other motherfu**ers who are in the business.”

He also denies that he threw a drink at Weezy during a recent club appearance. “I would never personally throw nothing on my son. I would never throw nothing on no man,” he said, adding, “Who’s to say it was thrown at Wayne? It could have just hit Wayne.”

He and Young Thug were named in an indictment in a murder-for-hire plot against Lil Wayne. But Birdman denies his involvement. “It’s probably the craziest shit I’ve ever heard in my life.”

He has no clue who was involved in the shooting of Wayne’s tour buses, but he claims it wasn’t him. “I couldn’t even tell you what happened that night ’cause I wasn’t there,” he said. “Hip-hop gets gangsta sometimes and you gotta be prepared for it when it comes to you.”

Weezy is suing for a whopping $51 million , an amount that doesn’t sit well with Birdman. “I don’t feel like I owe him $50 million. I just gave him a $100-plus million contract with $60-70 million upfront. I don’t feel the same way his attorney is saying he feels.”

While the future of their relationship remains unclear, one thing is not: Nicki Minaj and Drake won’t be leaving the label. “Nicki and Drake ain’t goin’ nowhere, regardless,” he said, adding that both artists are very happy. “You’ll never hear nothing out their mouths on no negative about either one of us ’cause we both have blessed their lives. Nicki and Drake, regardless of what goes down with us, they not going nowhere.”

On his relationship with Wayne: "[He] forever my son, that ain't gonna change no matter what... What's going on is just some business. My perspective is: I'm gonna do whatever he wanna do. He's still gonna be my son. I want him to make the decision that he wanna make. And whatever he wanna do with this game--cause I brought him into this game, I took us from nothing and turn us to something, that was my decision. He took it and brought it to another level, which is something he supposed to do... At the end of the day, no matter what he wanna do, I'm with it. That's my son, I love him to death, he's got my blessings, and I'm gonna support him... I gave him a $100+ million contract... it didn't take a corporation to do this. It didn't take an organization to do this. I did this for my son. That meant the world that I was able to do that... What's going on now, I don't really know how it's gonna turn out."

On Nicki and Drake: "Nicki and Drake ain't going nowhere. Regardless. Both of 'em, [are] very [happy]. And I got much respect for 'em... you never hear nothing out their mouths, nothing negative about either one of us. Because we both have blessed their lives. Nicki and Drake regardless of what goes down with us, they're not going."

What he felt after Wayne called out Cash Money on Twitter : "I never thought that would ever happen, for [Wayne] to open his mouth and say something negative about me. I love my son, that mean the world to me, he means the world to me. For that man to say something negative, that affected my life. I ain't speak to him about it... I just take it for what it is... I'm an in-person type person, so I stay to myself. I seen him a few times, we work every day right next to each other. My studio and his studio is right next door, so I see him like every day. I don't say nothing. Sometimes I go over there and listen to his music... I just feel like the studio ain't the place for [a conversation]... I feel like in due time we gonna do that, but this ain't the place or the time for that. My son respect me enough if I call him and tell him I'm about to pull up, he gonna open that gate. I'm gonna go in that house, and me and him gonna talk. I just feel like I know he's traveling, I know his schedule, he's not in town a lot, I know he's gone a lot. So I'm gonna wait for the proper time.

What happened at Club Liv: "You watch the tape? You saw me? You seen me, right? You seen me, right? You seen what I was doing? You seen me, right? I'm in my own zone. And then like I said, I'm not gonna let no man disrespect my son--you're disrespecting me. If it was a disrespect towards him, that shit got checked, ASAP. I'm not gonna let nobody disrespect my family. They know what Wayne mean to me. They know what I mean to him. That's my son. If it was a matter, it got done ASAP. Trust me."

His connection to the shooting of Wayne's tour bus: "[The indictment] is the craziest shit I've ever heard in my life. I'm passionate about my family and my kids. I was born without parents in a boarding house. My children mean the world to me. You crazy if you think that! I ain't trippin, you trippin'! Y'all are trippin.' You know how I am about Wayne. You know the love I showed him. I love him, that's my son. I don't play no games... I can't get caught up in what people say and how they feel, I can't let them dictate how I live my life... I don't know what happened. First of all, it ain't an indictment on me... If you're gunning my child, I got a problem with that. Any nigga gonna bust a gun at Wayne, I got a problem with that. I don't care who it is, we got a problem... Anybody that get in this game, this shit get gangster sometimes. Hip-hop gets gangster sometimes. You gotta be prepared for it if it comes to you... This shit really gets vile sometimes. We chose this life. We in it, and you gotta be ready for it... I couldn't even tell you what happened that night, cause I wasn't there. I heard what happened like everybody else."

“Standards” mean one can both identify and vilify aberrant behavior that wallows below the water level of acceptability.  “Standards” mean you refuse to support such aberrant behavior.  “Standards” mean you do not make excuses for such aberrant behavior.  The moment we as a community stop confusing “cash” with “class,” the sooner we will be on the path to developing standards.  The sooner we stop winning 6 rings with the Chicago Bulls, blowing 122 million for a career and ending up broke like Scottie Pippen…the sooner it will be evident that we’re on the path to developing standards.

This behavior is neither admirable nor an anomaly.  Below you will see a list of the top 20 Hip Hop earners for 2010.  Nowhere will you find Birdman’s name.

So AT BEST, Birdman (barring extra-curricular illegal activities) is in the sub 5 million dollar neighborhood.  The Bugatti, the watch and the yacht collectively well exceed 5 million dollars.  Take your pick, purchases or rentals…he’s promoting and promulgating lies and our young people are both helping finance them and are being deluded.  It’s time for us as a community to choose and support standards instead of stereotypes.

If we are tired of the stereotypes and having them used against us, then we must act like we have standards.  It’s not the nice thing to say, but it sure as hell is the truth.
