History of the San Juan Island Yacht Club

“It was a sunny day on the first Sunday in May 1964 that the San Juan Island Yacht Club was conceived. A group of new boat owners were working on their boats Saturday down at Jensen’s Shipyard, and while they stopped for a rest and visited, someone suggested a picnic cruise to one of the other islands the next day. They agreed on Sucia... So it was.... a flotilla of seven boats that set out the next morning.” While the group enjoyed a picnic around the bonfire, one man suggested that they try to start a new yacht club to have many more such trips. They all decided then and there to begin organizing the next day. On Monday morning May 7, 1964 the group met and started the specific arrangements and, within the month, the San Juan Island Yacht Club was registered as a nonprofit corporation with 102 charter memberships.  The Club burgee was adopted on July 16, 1964. By the end of July there were 203 memberships. During that and the following months, the Club cruising and meeting programs were developed.  In 1970 the Club began sponsoring the, now classic, Shaw Island Classic sailboat race.

For the first 20 years the club rented space at the Friday Harbor Grange Hall until, in November 1984 came the decisive commitment to build a clubhouse. The new clubhouse overlooking the harbor was inaugurated on January 22, 1987.  In 1998, there was a major facelift with numerous model ships, classic pictures of America’s Cup sailboats, trophies reflecting Club events, and several Yacht Clubs’ pennants and burgees installed to carry out a nautical motif.  In 2016 a beautiful “infinity deck” was installed to allow members to enjoy each other’s company outside overlooking the port of Friday Harbor. From the late sixties the Club also has been an active cruising organization welcoming sail and powerboats alike. The Club has cruised to Sucia, Prevost Harbor, Reid Harbor, Fisherman’s Bay, Blakely, Rosario, Deer Harbor, Oak Harbor, Penn Cove, Cornet Bay, Bellingham, Seattle, Olympia, La Conner, Poulsbo, Jones Island, Bedwell Harbor, Maple Bay, Victoria, Ladysmith, Sidney, Montague Harbor, Telegraph Harbor, Fulford Harbor, Ganges, Port Browning, Saanich Inlet, and Long Harbor. There have also been extended cruises to Edgemont, Princess Louisa, down Puget Sound and the Broughtons.  Club cruises are often well-attended with over 20 boats and 50 members and guests participating in fun social activities on the docks and beyond. The Club welcomes new members of diverse interests and backgrounds and has become a great place to socialize with others committed to support the local community.  The Club partners with the Port of Friday Harbor each year to sponsor Opening Day festivities in early May with up to 40 boats and nearly as many community organizations participating in this “4 th of July on the water” celebration.  The Club increasingly collaborates with other boating organizations such as the Power Squadron in joint events and educational programs to improve safety and enjoyment on the water.

SAN JUAN ISLAND YACHT CLUB

The San Juan Island Yacht Club is the island's largest boating organization with over 300 members, power and sail.  The Club is inclusive and works actively to connect the island community with its marine environment and the boating experience.  A major activity sponsored by the Club each year is Opening Day in early May with its theme of "A Community Afloat". This is a celebration involving boaters, islands businesses and community groups of all stripes in support of boating education and safety.

Our clubhouse is a full-service facility with large meeting room, bar and kitchen facilities that hosts club dinners most Wednesday and Friday nights, as well as many special social events throughout the year.   Members of yacht clubs with reciprocal privileges have first-come/first-served access to free club moorage in the harbor and are invited to join club members on dinner nights.

The San Juan Island Yacht Club is a cruising club. Our members travel as far north as Glacier Bay and south to the Gulf of California.  We sponsor 10 or more cruises in the Salish Sea and beyond each year along with the popular Shaw Island Classic sailing race. Memberships are currently available.

Anacortes Yacht Charters

Escape the ordinary with a San Juan Islands yacht charter vacation.

Adventure awaits

The San Juan Islands and Gulf Islands are some of the most popular cruising areas in the world.

What is it that draws people to these islands? A big reason is because the islands are remote but accessible at the same time. A short drive from Seattle or Vancouver puts you in Anacortes, Washington, the “Gateway to the San Juan Islands.” From there, the San Juan Islands start a mere 15 miles away.

Your Cruise. Your Choice.

Once in the islands, you’ll find quaint both communities and hidden hideaway, all surrounded by a calm inland sea. Seemingly endless miles of coastline and over 100 islands give you plenty of options for exploring and relaxing. Drop anchor in a quiet cove, or tie up at one of the island marinas – it’s your choice when you charter!

The top 50 most exclusive yacht clubs in the world honored with platinum status.

Royal Yacht Squadron in England

The rich and famous are not merely looking for the best place to anchor their yachts; they are also seeking out exclusive memberships in stunning destinations, all offering luxury amenities and, of course, bragging rights. These exclusive yachting clubs with often outrageous initiation fees, provide luxurious clubhouses, and provide accommodations for yachties who want to get their land legs. Most of them provide high-end concierge service to its members as well as Michelin-star quality restaurants and more.

Yacht Clubs have been recognized in the Platinum Clubs of America elections for more than 20 years. According to the Platinum Club, “Recognition in the following categories is important in the selection of Platinum status; Tradition, history, and heritage, a respected membership, excellence in amenities, exceptional service, adapting to changing times, and overall experience.

I spoke with the President of Club Leaders Forum, David V. Smith, about the selection, and he says, “we created an alphabetical selection this time as opposed to by rank because we felt that it was challenging to compare a yacht club in Ireland with a yacht club in Singapore, as amenities, location and facilities do vary quite a lot. The yachting and boating world is a different and unique culture, typically a little more relaxed and not as formal as country clubs and golf clubs. However, many of the world’s finest yacht clubs have wonderful history and traditions, with a great sense of camaraderie among their members. Certain yacht clubs were selected by the Panel not necessarily for their facilities and amenities but in their recognition of hosting world class sailing regattas and events.”

Here are the top 50 most exclusive yacht clubs worldwide being awarded the ultimate Platinum Status for 2021.

Annapolis Yacht Club

Surrounding the Spa Creek Bridge in Annapolis, the Club boasts over 75 wet slips and dry dockage. The club began in 1886 as an informal canoe club, and today has 1600 regular members active in social, racing, and cruising programs.

Pre-approval of the Club Manager is required in order to invite more than six guests at one time. Also, members should avoid sponsoring frequent and repeated visits by any particular guest or guests; by state law, this privilege may not be used as a substitute for membership. Any particular guest is limited to a maximum of six visits per year, regardless of how many Members invite them. (ref WAC 314-40-40(2))
  • Rental Guests: The clubhouse may be rented for non-Club activities. Rental customers and their guests are subject to the same house rules as members. (ref WAC 314-40-010)
  • Reciprocal Visitors: Upon entering the clubhouse, visiting members of reciprocal yacht clubs are required to present their club membership card to the Club Manager, bartender, or to a designated SJIYC member for approval. Each visitor must then sign the registration sheet and be issued a reciprocal badge showing their name and yacht club. This badge (nametag) must be worn in order for the reciprocal visitor to remain in the clubhouse and be served food or beverages.
  • Guests: Host members shall sign their guest(s) into the guest registration book and prepare a nametag for each guest hosted, showing their name and the host’s name. Guests are required to wear the guest badges while visiting our facility. The sponsoring host member must accompany the guest and be responsible for the guest’s conduct and obligations while visiting the clubhouse. The guest may not remain in the clubhouse if the sponsoring member leaves the premises for any reason.
  • Membership Cards: Members shall not lend their membership cards to non-members or allow the use of clubhouse facilities in their name.
  • Attire: With respect to attire, propriety is the rule, i.e. swimsuits, shirtless attire, and bare feet are never appropriate.
  • Bar & Lounge: The Club will fully comply with state liquor laws. The lounge area is restricted at all times to use by persons 21 years of age or older. All persons tending bar or any Club official may demand identity cards to establish the age of persons drinking or seeking to drink alcoholic beverages.
  • Youth: Persons under the age of eighteen shall be accompanied by and under the close supervision of an adult at all times.
  • Conduct: All persons in our clubhouse shall observe proper conduct and decorum and shall respect other members’ and guests’ use and enjoyment of the clubhouse. Members or employees assigned to bar service will refuse to serve alcoholic beverages to anyone when, in their opinion, such person is intoxicated. Activities that bring the Club into disrepute or interrupt the harmony of the clubhouse are prohibited; disturbances will not be tolerated. In the event a person is guilty of a breach of the rules of conduct, it shall be the duty of any Flag Officer, or the Club Manager if no Flag Officer is present, to immediately request that said person or persons leave the premises.
  • Pets: Pets are prohibited in the dining room, bar, and galley at all times. Pets may be on the deck if leashed or crated and under the control of the owner. (ref WAC 246-215-06570)
  • Observed Violations: Members observing violations of these House Rules should report their observations or concerns to a Flag Officer, or to the Club Manager if no Flag Officer is present. Members should not take it on themselves to intervene and/or confront a member or guest whom they consider to be in violation of these House Rules.
