The 10 Best CRN Superyachts Ever Made

Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, the italian superyacht builder has pioneered many custom superyacht designs, from the first explorer to a gigayacht with a flooding garage., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

CRN Celebrates its 60th Anniversary This Year. Here are Robb Report's 10 Favorites.

Sanzio Nicolini, the founder of superyacht builder CRN, was a visionary who brought a daring energy to boat building. He pursued collaborations with the likes of other boating luminaries such as Carlo Riva, Jon Bannenberg, and Alberto Pinto to produce landmark yachts that showcased innovative design and pushed the boundaries of technology.

These include Awal , the first yacht to feature a touch-and-go helipad; Atlante , which echoed the multipurpose full-beam design found on navy vessels; and, more recently, the 197-foot M/Y 141 with a Nuvolari Lenard design that embodies the aerodynamic lines of an Italian sports car. In 1999, CRN merged with the Ferretti Group. Today, celebrating its 60th anniversary, the Ancona-based yard maintains its reputation for building creative, owner-focused yachts with authentic technical prowess.

Here are our 10 favorites from the past six decades.

SuperConero Series, 1986

crn yachts logo

CRN’s SuperConero was a landmark series of 75.5-foot boats that signaled the arrival of CRN as a prestige yacht builder. The model drew a line in the sand for the design and build quality of all of CRN’s future yachts, remaining a source of inspiration even half a century later in the form of the only 164-foot model, Latona . Delivered in 2018, Latona carries all the modern CRN hallmarks, from a beach club at the stern and a balcony that can be used when cruising to a floodable tender garage and a terrace over the sea.

‘Fath Al Khair,’ 1978

crn yachts logo

The 155-foot Fath Al Khair was the first CRN to exceed 147 feet. Built for the Emir of Qatar, it reflected the owner’s insatiable appetite for ever-larger yachts in what was becoming an increasingly sophisticated market. Fath Al Khair also highlights the quirky “bow chine” design that CRN became known for in the 70s. Inspired by fishing boats, it assured guest safety when cruising while providing additional room for the crew.

‘F100,’ 1983

crn yachts logo

Thirty years ahead of its time, F100 was a game changer for the industry. Commissioned by Gianni Agnelli, the then-head of Fiat Group, it was the first true explorer yacht in the pleasure-boating world. It was also the first to have floating rubber supports that served as a form of soundproofing (again, pre-dating the noise-reduction technology developed 20 years later), and the first yacht of its size to have a touch-and-go helipad on the upper deck. The final flourish was a “beauty line” traced in pure gold under the rubbing strake from bow to stern, which gave an aesthetic flourish.

‘Il Vagabondo,’ 1986

crn yachts logo

Built for Saudi Arabian Sheikh Hassan Enany in 1986, the 213-foot Il Vagabondo is an early Terence Disdale design with a contemporary feel. The British designer penned the boat’s exterior and interior, which included the first guest elevator aboard a yacht. Il Vagabondo also highlighted CRN’s expertise in building custom steel-hulled yachts, with the naval architecture done in-house.

‘Vanina,’ 1986

crn yachts logo

The full-custom yachting phenomenon materialized in the 1980s when owners began looking to designers for one-off designs. Sensing this shift, Sanzio Nicolini collaborated with designer luminaries, such as Jon Bannenberg, considered the first modern yacht designer. The London designer completed a trio of custom designs for three Greek brothers, one of which was Vanina. At 108 feet in length, the yacht had features that the owner specifically requested, such as a mid-deck children’s room made of pine as well as an impressive 3,000 nautical mile range.

‘Maraya,’ 2007

crn yachts logo

It was in the late 90s when CRN first partnered with Rome-based Zuccon International Project, but it wasn’t until the 177-foot Maraya , delivered in 2007, that the world sat up and took notice of the partnership. Now a mainstay in yachting, Maraya was the first boat to have an owner’s suite with a private terrace that opened out over the sea. Providing the perfect spot for a breakfast coffee, the master suite balcony is complemented by a private office and a Zen-like en suite.

‘J’Ade,’ 2012

crn yachts logo

J’Ade is a 197-foot transatlantic yacht delivered by CRN in 2012. It was distinguished by having the first floodable garage on a yacht of its size. The hydraulically operated bay gave the owner easy access to the yacht’s 26-foot Riva Iseo, without the need for a tender lift area. When required, the multifunctional space dries out in a quick three minutes to transform into a beach club terrace with access to a saltwater pool.

‘Chopi Chopi,’ 2013

crn yachts logo

When most yacht lovers hear the name CRN, they automatically think Chopi Chopi . The 262-footer remains the largest yacht to come out of the Ancona yard, even 10 years after its delivery. Personalized from bow to stern for a highly experienced owner and his family, the yacht has a dedicated owner’s deck with a 2,100-square-foot private apartment connected to a stern terrace, a helipad for a three-ton helicopter, and a customized electronics system on the bridge with all the route-planning and navigation systems required. Oh, there’s a full entertainment system for the guests, too.

‘Voice,’ 2020

crn yachts logo

The 203-foot Voice is a head-turning yacht designed by long-time CRN collaborator Nuvolari Lenard. The yacht’s contoured external lines and bold bespoke colors reflect the strong personality of the owner. As the first CRN to comply with the new IMO Tier III requirements, which slashed nitrogen oxide (NOx) exhaust emissions by 70 percent, Voice was hailed as a step toward more sustainable yachting for the Italian builder.

‘Rio,’ 2022

crn yachts logo

Yachting in the 21st century pivots around indoor/outdoor connectivity and flexible living spaces. The full-custom 204-foot Rio , which launched at the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show, makes the most of both aspects. Large internal and external living areas seamlessly blend. Modular furniture can be moved around to create more room for guests or impromptu dance floors. The sky lounge serves as a private owner’s salon but is equally well suited to soirées for all 12 guests. All guest areas, including two full-beam VIPs, a wellness lounge, a beach club, a pool, and a cinema, come equipped with smart-automation technology to personalize the electronics.

CRN Yacht Charter

CRN Yachts Profile Photo

From the company’s first launch in 1974 to its current fleet of new and semi-custom designs, CRN offers a wide range of the most finely designed superyachts.

From its very inception, the CRN shipyard positioned itself as one of the leading builders of luxury superyachts. Initially small in stature, CRN was founded by Sanzio Nicolini in 1963 to produce small sea vessels.

Whilst humble in beginnings, the Italian shipyard became a part of the successful Ferretti group in 1999 and now specialises in the building of customised steel and aluminium yachts.

An acronym for the Italian title “Costruzioni e Riparazioni Navali”, CRN has produced over 100 superyachts in its esteemed history. Thanks to their characteristic bow shape, the brand is synonymous with prestige and exclusivity, making them the perfect choice for charter vacations.

70m in-build CRN Project Thunderball revealed

70m in-build CRN Project Thunderball enters next stage of construction

Italian shipyard CRN has announced that its 70-metre superyacht, known only as Project Thunderball, has arrived at the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona for the next stage of construction. The 1,100 GT superyacht was transported by sea and remains on schedule for her expected launch in 2026, with outfitting, painting and technical installation expected to take place in the coming months.

Sold by Y.CO in August 2022 and announced in July of last year,  the five-deck vessel comes from the drawing boards of Nauta Design and Vripack . A first-time collaboration for the four parties, it has been described as one of the team’s most “demanding” undertakings yet, designed to fulfil an exacting owner’s brief for a highly technical and capable yacht that avoids the “floating palace” look and feel.

"It's taken two years of designing," confirmed the owner, speaking to BOAT International last year. The finished result has a classic long bow, smooth sheer, and low profile that Marnix J. Hoekstra, co-creative director and partner at Vripack said is “deliberately reminiscent of times past”.

The owner has “impeccable sense of style and razor-sharp eye for design”,  added Hoekstra, and he was firm in his desire for a limited number of decks and a profile not dissimilar to the look of The One (now V2V ).

The owner is also a sailing yacht aficionado and as such, Project Thunderball will draw inspiration from the lines of sailing boats and will be accompanied by a smaller sailing yacht that will tag alongside the mothership. The superyacht will be located between the Mediterranean, the Bahamas and Florida and be used as a base for spearfishing, sailing and diving.

Explaining the yacht’s technical platform, Hoekstra said: “We took the utmost care to [create] a set of hull lines that focus on highly economical cruising combined with a very soft and comfortable ride”. To this end, the yacht’s entry lines are sharp, akin to a sailing yacht, and her bilges are curved.

Her hull is one of the “most efficient ones we’ve ever designed,” added Hoekstra. The shipyard echoed this, saying the yacht would be fitted with a peak shaving system to increase energy efficiency and slash fuel consumption.

“Like all the yachts designed and built by CRN,  Project Thunderball is an expression of high-level naval architecture, engineering, artisanal skills and Italian quality," said Stefano de Vivo, chief commercial officer at Ferretti Group.

A CRN spokesperson added that the yacht has "a clean, sober, retro style" which echoes the vintage lines of F100 , the first explorer designed in 1983 by CRN. "It is a superyacht rich in details, but at first glance very simple."

In terms of the interior, artwork and colour are key themes on board, with Mario Pedol, co-founder of Nauta Design, noting that “several areas are specifically thought for properly positioning the artworks or loose furniture elements”. This ties into an overall focus on the layout and circulation of Project Thunderball, with an indoor-outdoor connection underscoring every space.

“Nauta has always thought that true luxury onboard lifestyle is achieved through the most direct connection with the surrounding environment,” explained Pedol. “This is achieved through design choices like very large glazing. We worked a lot with CRN to optimise structures and technical solutions […] to have better natural light illuminating the interiors”. Solutions like “leaning” the mullion structures in the windows of the main saloon aim to improve the perception of light and offer unobstructed views over the surroundings.

The project is unique for its use of colour as “a true starring role” with “inventive” uses throughout, Pedol added. Alternating and complementary colours aim to add a sense of character to the interior, and every guest cabin on board has a distinctive colour scheme that is mirrored in the marble of the en suites. "At home, all of our bedrooms have different colours and we wanted to replicate that," noted the owner.

Contrasts can also be seen in the use of lines and shapes. “The interior design is based on a game of geometry, both for layers and for shapes,” said Pedol. “This combination creates dynamism and rhythm in the interior: you never feel the space as too flat, on the contrary geometry is always in motion with its details and finishings creating an intriguing movement.”

"I've worked with Vripack before on some stuff, and I really like what they do," the owner added. "And for Nauta, I really like their designs on [the first] My Song . I like that they're sailing yacht designers."

The owner has had a number of yachts over the years, but the 70-metre Project Thunderball will be his upper limit.

The yacht has a six-cabin layout with an owner’s suite, five further cabins and amenities including a gym and spa. Project Thunderball has also been tailored with watersports in mind for a “family [which] enjoys activities on and in the water”, said Hoekstra. In terms of tenders, she can carry two nine-metre tenders on the bow and a suite of kiteboards, paddleboards and surfboards.

The steel and aluminium yacht has a beam of 11-metres and a “relatively shallow” draught of 3.2-metres “allowing her to sail and anchor closer to shore,” explained Hoekstra. He added: “A rigorous CFD and tank testing programme was conducted by us to support the development of the lines plan.”

Other features include the winter garden, located in the central area of the sundeck, and a lower deck swimming pool positioned near the beach area, which is designed and built with a cold bath system.

CRN, a part of Ferretti Group has three further full-custom yachts in build: the 67-metre CRN  Project Maranello, 85-metre CRN 144 and 67-metre CRN Project 146.
