Most charters start from Tortola , the largest and most populated island in the British Virgin Islands. With distances between anchorages being under 20 NM , you can easily be in Jost Van Dyke, Peter Island, or Virgin Gorda Island before the end of the day.

Top Tips for Luxury BVI Catamaran Charter

• If you plan your next BVI yacht charter with a catamaran, there are direct flights to Beef Island airport or Ferry from St Thomas.
• Most travelers prefer to fly to St Thomas  and take a water taxi (we assist and help arrange). Why – there is a multitude of reasons starting with the price of flights – which are generally cheaper to USVI including a water taxi and ending with BVI airport having 2.5/5 reviews with most reviewers complaining about lack of AC and immigration procedures (sometimes too relaxed, other times unpleasantly meticulous). Island Time is a feature, not a bug.

• Start your charter at Nanny Cay Marina on Tortola Island—the central point of any BVI charter. This well-equipped marina has a nice restaurant and the famous beach bar Peg Legs (have a Dark&Stormy) in the British Virgin Islands.

• One of the most successful catamaran charters in the British Virgin Islands right now is OHANA , an 80-foot Sunreef with a fully equipped dive center and professional dive instructors on staff. Where to Go on a BVI Catamaran Charter

Most BVI catamaran charters depart from Nanny Cay , island hopping along Treasure Island, Norman Island, Peter Island, and Cooper Island on their way to Virgin Gorda . Depending on the weather, Anegada is often included. This catamaran charter route will cover the key attractions of the British Virgin Islands.

When on the way back, return via the Nort side of Tortola , hitting Cane Garden Bay and continuing to Jost Van Dyke – coming back through Sopers Hole .

If you finish your catamaran charter on Tortola, you can depart at the Hodges Creek marina and catch your flight from Beef I sland Airport .

If you are approaching from USVI – crossing Jost Van Dyke or Tortola, you must pass customs first. However, the bigger crewed catamarans often move to Exumas for the summer.

Virgin Gorda is the third largest island in the British Virgin Islands, with just over 4,000 people.

It’s known for its beautiful white sands, the rock pools known as The Baths National Park , and world-class luxury resorts and clubs for BVI yacht charters.

There are also some great hiking trails on Virgin Gorda with sweeping views of the island’s coastline-making it an ideal destination for visitors with  bareboat catamarans .

After soaking up the sunshine and saltwater activities in Virgin Gorda, consider visiting the Copper Mine National Park . These 19th-century abandoned ruins are found between Copper Mine Bay and Crooks Bay on the island’s southeastern point. The structures were built by Cornish miners and housed around 130 families before the mine was closed in 1862.

Jost Van Dyke

Jost Van Dyke, one of the smallest leeward islands, is renowned for its exceptional scuba diving , thanks to its vibrant marine life, making it a top destination for snorkeling and water sports enthusiasts.

But what really makes Jost Van Dyke stand out as a charter destination is its super great vibe and positive energy around White Bay and Great Harbour.

Don’t miss a visit to the Great Harbour Bars of Foxy’s and Ivan’s for a drink, the peaceful energy of Diamond Cay , and the crashing waves of Bubbly Pool .

Yacht description.

You will relish your time onboard Bagherra, a 2017 Lagoon 620 Essence catamaran. It is spacious and modern and offers four queen size cabins, all with immaculate ensuite facilities. The salon has loads of natural light from the wraparound windows, plus there is excellent headroom, which adds to the light and airy feel. The comfortable leather sofa can also be used as a formal dining option with the high low table.

Outside there are three spots with an abundance of space so everyone can have their own privacy should they want it. The cockpit offers a shaded dining option as well as comfy seating and a lounging pad. “Upstairs”, the flybridge offers a further space to relax and then forward there are the trampolines for the sun worshipers. There are three crew members with a dedicated chef so, even with a full yacht, your every need is met.

Our personal opinion

Why book Bagherra – ENJOYING THE WATER – Bagheera has an extensive selection of water toys and has a 16ft dinghy with a 70hp outboard so it is perfect for skiing or wakeboarding. There is also a kiddie’s water slide and sea scooters – oh, and they also have a huge floating island if you want less excitement! Add to this, a fabulous well established crew, super tasty gourmet food and masses of space and you will fall in love with Bagheera, as we have done.

Rendezvous diving

If your crewed charter yacht does not offer onboard diving then fear not, rendezvous diving can be arranged.

So what is Rendezvous diving?

A local dive company will pick you up direct from your charter yacht at a pre-determined location and take you for a one- or two-tank dive to experience the BVI below the water. This is an excellent option if only a couple of guests wish to dive or can work equally as well if all your group are interested. If your charter yacht offers minimal onboard diving, then rendezvous diving can also work if you wanted to add a few more dives during your charter.

Rendezvous diving is at additional cost, payable locally. The dive company provides all gear.

• Virgin Gorda Island – Famous for its Baths, Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour, Leverick Bay, and North Sound of Virgin Gorda are great places to moor. Snapper’s Bar and Grill, Coco Maya are great restaurants to visit.

The Ultimate 7 Day BVI Itinerary

Planning a BVI Catamaran Charter?

Planning a trip to the British Virgin Islands? Hit all the highlights with this ultimate 7 day BVI itinerary for a trip unlike any other!

For this epic trip, we did a BVI Catamaran Charter onboard a PowerCat 443 from MarineMax Vacations . The PowerCat 443 has three bedrooms and three full bathrooms! This was a perfect size for three couples allowing us plenty of privacy and plenty of room to play at the same time.

Because of our boating experience, we were able to do a bareboat charter, meaning we captained our own catamaran. If you do not feel comfortable driving the boat yourself, a captain is available for an extra charge. Heck, you can even hire a private chef if you want to!

Below you will find all the details for our 7 Day BVI Itinerary which included the famous Willy T, Soggy Dollar Bar, Foxy’s, Scrub Island, The Baths, The Bitter End Yacht Club, and a special dinner at Saba Rock!

BVI Day 1: Travel Day

• Flight to St Thomas
• Lunch at the Ferry Terminal
• Native Son Ferry to Tortola 
• Customs in Road Town Tortola, Taxi to Nanny Cay
• Arrive at MarineMax at Nanny Cay
• Dinner at Peg Legs at Nanny Cay (MarineMax Marina)
• Sleep aboard at Nanny Cay

We ordered provisions ahead of time from Bobby’s Supermarket on Tortola. Our groceries were ready and waiting for us when we arrived! There is a small supermarket and two restaurants at the MarineMax marina which was super helpful for last minute items and meals. There are also showers and changing rooms available to charter guests if you need another option besides the boat bathrooms. MarineMax has rooms available for rent if you do not choose to do a sleep aboard your first night. While the sleep aboard option is more expensive, it was nice to only have to unpack once and to have that extra time to get familiar with the boat before leaving the marina.

How do you get around the BVI’s when you do a BVI sailing charter ? Once you have hooked up to a mooring ball in the harbor of your destination, most catamaran charters come with a dinghy! Then take your dinghy to shore or tie up to a nearby dinghy dock.

Pro Tip : Consider booking private round trip transportation to and from the British Virgin Islands. While it may seem extremely expensive, it actually comes out around the same amount of money and saves you a ton of time!

BVI Day 2: Norman Island

• MarineMax catamaran orientation
• Leave from Nanny Cay (MarineMax)
• Moored at Norman Island
• Played at Willy T
• Lunch at Willy T
• Played and swam by the boat for the remainder of the afternoon
• Dinner at Pirate’s Bight

What is the Willy T ? The Willy T is a pirate ship and bar off of Norman Island. Not only do they have a dingy dock but space for larger boats to tie up as well.

What do you do at the Willy T? Well…you eat, drink, and jump! Although there are signs posted stating “No Jumping Allowed”, it is what everyone does. Young, old, doesn’t matter. You go to the Willy T, you jump! So we did. LOL.

Should I take my kids to the Willy T ? Well…that depends. At one point during our time at the Willy T, I would say No, absolutely not. It was a wild crowd that I wouldn’t feel comfortable taking my kids to. But they only stayed about an hour and after they left, it was a much more chill crowd, with kids! So, if you plan to take your kids to the Willy T, just know ahead of time, you may to have a plan B or come back another time.

Pro Tip : Need a plan B? Norman Island is also the perfect spot for swimming, snorkeling, exploring caves, and hiking!

BVI Day 3: Jost Van Dyke

• Leave from Norman Island 
• Moored at Great Harbor off Jost Van Dyke
• Lunch onboard the boat
• Played at Foxy’s and Soggy Dollar Bar
• Dinner at Foxy’s

Soggy Dollar Bar is one of the most famous beach bars in the world! Soggy Dollar Bar got it’s name because people could only get there from the water, therefore arriving with soggy dollars in their pockets. They’re famous for a drink called a painkiller which consists of rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, cream of coconut, with grated nutmeg on top! Soggy Dollar has to be included on any BVI itineray!

Pro Tip : There is no dinghy dock at Soggy Dollar Bar. You either have to ride the waves onto the beach OR you can take a taxi from Foxy’s across the island to Soggy Dollar Bar. Either way you’re sure to have a great time! Also, if you need lunch options, there is supposedly a fabulous pizza place near Soggy Dollar Bar. Hendo’s Hideout is another great option.

BVI Day 4: Scrub Island

• Leave from Jost Van Dyke
• Moored at Marina Cay 
• Played at Scrub Island 
• Lunch at Scrub Island
• Moved on to overnight mooring in the Bitter End Yacht Club Mooring Field 
• Dinner at Bitter End Yacht Club

Pro Tip : Call ahead of time to make sure you are able to get a day pass for Scrub Island – they initially told us day passes were unavailable, however they made some available when we mentioned we were 20 year Marriott Bonvoy members.

 (Our original plan for Day 4 on our BVI Itinerary was to go to Anegada Island- unfortunately due to high winds and rough seas we had to go with Plan B above- which turned out to be epic as well!)

Wellness Reminder: This 7 Day BVI itinerary is jam packed full of fun! Gentle reminder to hydrate, reapply that sunscreen, and take some time to slow down. Scrub Island is the perfect spot for a little rest and relaxation.

BVI Day 5: Virgin Gorda

• Moored at Bitter End Yacht Club
• Ferry from BEYC to Gun Creek
• Taxi to The Baths with Tiger Taxi (Set up by the concierge at BEYC)
• Lunch at The Baths
• Played at The Baths National Park on Virgin Gorda
• Dinner at Saba Rock 

I have to say Day 5 during our BVI catamaran charter was my favorite day. The Baths National Park are an absolute must for any BVI itinerary. We absolutely loved seeing a bit of Virgin Gorda by land in a fun open air taxi. And if we went back and wanted to stay at a resort, I would stay at The Bitter End Yacht Club in a heartbeat!

Pro Tip : There are options to anchor off of the Bath’s instead of taking a taxi across the island, however there is only the option to tie your dinghy up to a floating line and then swim the rest of the way into The Bath’s. If you are not a strong swimmer, I would not recommend this option as the current can be quite strong.

BVI Day 6: Cooper Island

• Leave from BEYC/ Virgin Gorda 
• Moored at Nanny Cay/ Marine Max
• Lunch on board the boat
• Played at Cooper Island 
• Return to MarineMax at Nanny Cay
• Dinner at Peg Legs 

Our original plan was to stay overnight at Cooper Island. There is a fun rum bar, brewery, and restaurant on Cooper Island. However, when we went ashore around 1pm that day, they informed us they did not have any dinner reservations available and did not take walk ins. We then planned to go back to Norman Island to finish up our week with one more trip to the Willy T. Sadly, we had some mechanical issues on our way to Norman Island which ended with a MarineMax engineer coming out and bringing us back into the marina. All in all, it was fine, we were all safe and happy!

BVI Day 7: Travel Day

• Private boat service ( Johnny’s Maritime Services ) from Nanny Cay to BVI Customs in Soper’s Hole to USVI customs in Cruz Bay in St John to St Thomas 
• Flight home 

This was the perfect BVI itinerary for an adult/ couples vacation. You could also easily do this same BVI itinerary in reverse. There’s no reason one is better than the other. There are plenty of family friendly options and things to do with kids as well. This was pretty much the coolest vacation we’ve ever been on- I highly recommend adding it to your bucket list !

BVI Quick Tips & Things to Know Before You Go:

• Food is very expensive on the islands and service is slow- just prepare to be on “island time”.
• We ate breakfast on the boat each day.
• Make dinner reservations for each night or you may not get in! (We tried making reservations around lunchtime on Day 6 at Cooper Island and were turned away because they were full!)
• Make sure to have some cash handy if you don’t end up getting a BoatyBall…someone will come by each day to collect a mooring fee. You will also likely have someone come by to collect trash for a small cash fee each day. ( BoatyBall is a service where you can reserve a mooring ball each morning- but trust us, balls go quick!)
• Always have a Plan B in case your original plan doesn’t work out! 
• Something will likely go wrong- just go in knowing that!
• Give yourself extra time on your travel days! (Apparently Saturdays are the busiest day for leaving the BVIs.)

Our sailing vacations start either at 12 pm or 5 pm from our base in Hodges Creek Tortola. Being a smaller and more of a boutique type charter fleet we can offer both start times. We always do advise that you first check airfare to find out your arrival time in Tortola to see what start time would suit you best. Our charters end at 10 am and are typically 7 nights aboard. You can start any day of the week but we do ask you to be somewhat flexible so we can try to maximize the boats calendar.

Book a Sleep aboard Option the night before...

We can offer sleep aboard option the night before your charter starts. We normally reserve this 30 days prior to your departure. If open we will add the sleep aboard for one half of the daily rate. In this way you can unpack and unwind and even provision your yacht if applicable.

Drive yourself (Bareboat) or we can hire a skipper for your duration of your catamaran trip.

All our yachts are available as a bareboat charters. We will ask you to fill out a resume to ensure you have the experience but if you feel you need a captain for the one day, two days or more we can add one to your reservation for $400 per day. There are two type of skippers: Regular Captain who will drive the catamaran, take you to each island, help with dinghy trips, sail, anchor and then there is the instructional captain who will teach you how to sail in the islands. The cost of an instructional captain per day is $420. Do note, that by BVI law it is required that the captain have his own bed or v berth in bow. Most of our yachts are equipped this way with forward v berths in bow and some have additional head/shower on starboard bow. It is also required to ensure you add the Captains meals to your provisions. We do at time of reservation point out the cost of captain meals so no surprises when you get to our charter base.

Have you just booked a Catamaran Charter and wondering what to pack? If so, you will want to read this article.

I was in the same boat like you. It was my bucket list dream to travel the British Virgin Islands by a catamaran. Once the trip was booked it was time to start thinking of packing and buying some new clothes. If you are like me, you have a tendency to overpack. This was one of the first trips I actually wore almost everything I packed. Once on the trip, I learned what I would bring and what I would not.

First things First- A Rolling Duffel Bag

I don’t even own a rolling duffel bag! One week prior to the trip I was convinced I would bring a suitcase. Two days prior to the trip I was convinced I needed a rolling duffel bag by all the packing lists I read. My friend going on the Catamaran strongly suggested not to bring a suitcase. Turns out everyone was right! I would have been sleeping with that suitcase! There isn’t any room onboard to store large bags in a catamaran stateroom.

My wonderful husband took his motorcycle parts out of the only rolling duffel bag that we own the night before our departure. He had to clean it because it smelled of oil and gas. TSA loved my bag! I had a TSA card in the bag when I arrived in Fort Lauderdale and my outfits were not in the order I had packed them in. At the St. John airport five TSA personnel were surrounded all around my bag. My husband used a duffel bag to pack but it didn’t have wheels. He threw his back out and had to book a Massage prior to getting on the boat and a chiropractor once he got back. Lesson learned, buy a rolling duffel bag!

• Swimsuits- We had a seven-day charter so I packed 3 swimsuits. You will spend a lot of time in the water snorkeling and swimming. 3 swimsuits were the magic number. My husband packed two.
• Rashguard for sun protection- when you spend a lot of time in the water and sun a rashguard will offer sun protection and dry quickly.
• UPF Light Weight Sun Shirt- My favorite one is the Hanalei Full Zip Hoodie from Title 9. I had never ordered from them before and I lived in this lightweight sun shirt every day.

• Another Favorite Item, I wore almost every day and wish I had purchased a second one is the Dream Skort from Title 9   The material is lightweight and dries fast if it gets wet. It is so comfortable you will want to live in it which I did. Sports bras, sports tops from Title 9 or Athleta that dry quickly are the clothes you will want to wear. I did bring yoga pants but it was too hot for them to wear. Stick with the skorts instead. The key is lightweight and breathable materials that dry fast.
• Sundresses- Sundresses are perfect for the evenings whether you visit a restaurant, bar, or stay onboard for dinner. I packed three since we had three dinner nights ashore.

• A Book- If you like to read bring a good book to read. I only had time to read one but if you enjoy reading you may want to bring two just in case. Check out the best seller list of new reads from Amazon
• Sunscreen- A high SPF & facial sunscreen
• When it comes to make up keep it light. You won’t wear as much as you think you will. Lipgloss, eyeshadow, blush, waterproof mascara, and a tinted moisturizer with SPF is all you need.
• The salt water dries out your skin- bring a travel size skin moisturizer.
• You can not bring hair curling irons or hair dryers. Just pack a styling gel or trial hotel sizes of shampoo & conditioner. A coconut hair oil spray helped get the tangles out when I couldn’t wash my hair. Your cute hair ties come in handy with pony tails and braids with wet hair. Tip- put your wet hair in a loose braid and once it dries you have natural, wavy hair.
• Snorkeling Equipment – Check with your charter and see if they supply snorkel gear. I like to bring my own. This is what I travel with.

• Do you have a themed planned? We had a Hawaiian Night, a Colorado Night, and a Nautical Themed Night for the dinners on board. Themed nights create a fun photo opportunity. Pack outfits accordingly. Nautical wear is always perfect for a boat cruising.

A Nautical theme is perfect for a Catamaran Charter.

• A swimsuit cover- up to wear on the islands or on the boat after swimming. Pack one or two.
• A tank top and shorts to sleep in. It can be hot at night all I wanted to wear was a tank top and shorts. I buy mine from Victoria’s Secret. Bring two or three pairs of pajamas for a week long excursion.
• Two pairs of inexpensive sunglasses with a sunglass Croakie cord. You will have a back up pair in case you lose a pair in the water.
• Check to see if your Charter provides Beach towels. If not buy one as a souvenir in St. John or bring one. I didn’t need to bring mine, one less thing I could have packed.
• Shoes- Flip flops and a sturdy water shoe. You will not need gym shoes or high heels. I did not bring water shoes and I wish I did. We hiked rocks and wet rocks and I did it in blingy flip flops. They were definitely the wrong shoes!

• I seldom wear shorts so I often opt for a skort instead. However, I packed one pair of linen shorts and a t-shirt. It’s a good outfit for day onshore shopping or going to a bar.
• Check the weather, I packed a long sleeve Athleta Beyond Soft sweatshirt for the evenings. I never wore it because it was too hot.
• Wet Wipes- Water is precious onboard. I love showers but wet wipes were easy to use as a substitute shower and to stay clean. Just don’t flush them down the toilet.
• Ziplock bags- aka A Sailor’s Wallet. My friend recommended packing each outfit in a Ziplock bag. This was a great idea. Our clothes stayed fresh. In the case of our friend’s cabin- they forgot to latch their window and their cabin was soaked. Luckily they had packed their outfits in plastic bags so their clothes were dry. You can use these for wallets and cameras when going ashore.

• Pool Floatie – A boating trip is the best excuse to float on the water. Check with your Charter company and see if you can Amazon Prime your float directly to them. I shipped my Gold Swan directly to Soulshine Charters in St. John via Amazon .

• If you are a light sleeper pack ear plugs. I actually had a hard time sleeping because of the waves and new sounds I was not used to.
• Don’t forget your passport!
• Every restaurant and bar in the Virgin Islands took Visa. American Express not so much.
• The British Virgin Islands will accept US $$. I used my Visa card for the majority of my purchases. Bring cash to tip your crew.
• Your favorite high-end Champagne or wine. Check with your charter on what is included. I knew I wanted to have a Veuve Champagne moment onboard!
• Sun Hat with tie string- It can be windy so bring a sun hat with tie string to tighten it. My favorite brand is Wallaroo. The Julia sun hat is UPF 50+ too. It is worn in the above photograph.
• Games- Our charter had many games onboard to play. Check which ones they have onboard before your trip.
• Sea Bands and Bonine- Everyone swore the Bonine works the best. I wear the Sea bands and I haven’t gotten sea sick wearing them.

After our charter, these are the items I would pack again on a future charter. It’s not fun to pack too much and not wear it. In the case of a Yacht vacation, less is more. Hope this helps. Don’t forget to take a ton of photographs so bring your waterproof camera.
